Book Description
On the fabled world of Krynn, Lord Soth finally learns that there is a price to pay for his long history of evil deeds, a price even an undead warrior might find horrifying.
Dark powers transport Soth to Barovia, and there the death knight must face the dread minions of Count Strahn Von Zarovich, the vampire lord of the nightmare land. But with only a captive Vistani woman and an untrustworthy ghost for allies, Lord Soth soon discovers that he may have to join forces with the powerful vampire if he is ever to escape the realm of terror.
Knight of the Black Rose is the second in an open-ended series of Gothic horror tales dealing with the masters and monsters of the
Ravenloft dark fantasy setting.
Customer Reviews:
The BEST Ravenloft story.......2006-03-07
What is most amazing about this story is that we finally get to see the inner working of Lord Soth's world. It is a scary place compared to his overwhelming presence of evil incarnate in Dragonlance. In Ravenloft, he is a force that even Strahd would cower before, as his vengeance and hate are all consuming.
If you love Dragonlance, read this book for nothing more than the background information on Soth.
If given another chance to stop the cataclysm, would he? What dark temptations do the Lords of Ravenloft have to offer? Read, and you will find the answer.
Lord Soth as only he could be..........2005-08-19
Knight of the Black Rose follows one of Dragonlace's best known villians as he finds himself int he Ravenloft world trying to get out. Those of you familiar with the Dragonlance Chronicles will undoubtedly know the name of Lord Soth the Death Knight. The scene stealer of the Chronicles books.
In this book, Soth has been given a new voice by James Lowder. Lowder proves that he has a knack for darkf antasy with his first Ravenloft novel. Lowder proves he is the perfect writer to write this dark fantasy novel.
There is nothing cliche about this book, in fact it breaks the rules of good vs evil. After all, there is no 'good' guys in the Ravenloft world. There is the bad guys, the the worse guys. It's a very interesting take on the fantasy genre.
Lowder has proved over the past couple years that he is a voice to be listened too. I believe right now he is one of the best kept secrets to the writing world. Once his name gets out his popularity will surely explode. Treat yourself to agripping tale and read this book.
Best ravenloft book I have read.......2004-12-31
I really enjoyed this book. Lord Soth is one of my favorite characters, and this story is well told. All of the other characters are also very good. And the setting is great. If you like Soth and or ravenloft you must read this book.
It was kinda a nice book...........2004-11-23
This book was pretty interesting. It involved a Death Knight (one of the best Villan if you ask me) who is trying to get back to Krynn, the place he is from. He was one of the original Villans of the War, and is looking for the soul of the Dark Knight woman, whose name I forget, and ends up in Baronita. You will love this book if you are just in it for the killing and evil of this guy!
One of the best books in this series!.......2004-02-18
What can I say, the book made me want to keep reading!
Book Description
In this chilling sequel to the best-selling Knight of the Black Rose, factions vie for control of Sithicus as Lord Soth -- darklord and former knight from the
Dragonlance world -- fights to keep his reign from crumbling. Even as he struggles to defeat his enemies, rumor reaches him that the White Rose haunts the land. Has Kitiara finally returned to Soth, or is this another spectre from the death knight's tragic past?
Customer Reviews:
Soth and Lowder a match made in Hea...er Ravenloft!.......2005-08-19
This book is the sequel to Knight of the Black Rose. Once again Lowder does a masterful job of telling the story of Lord Soth and what makes him tick. Past book about Lord Soth focus on him being a supreme villian and the history of his 'transformation' into a Death Knight. Yet, in this book, Lowder does a very good job of getting inside Soth's head and letting the reaer know what he is thinking.
Unlike the first Ravenloft book about Soth this one has a little more intrique in it. There is a mystery in this book that Soth is continually faced with, just who is the White Rose? Fans of the Dragonlance Chronicles will understand this subplot the more they read about it.
Lowder again proves that he can create interesting characters and stories behind those characters with seemingly very little effort. The Bloody Cobbler being one of the most interesting Ravenloft characters I have ever read about. I wish he would have gotten his own book, but alas we don't always get what we want.
If you are a fan of the Dragonlance books I highly suggest you pick up this book and give it a shot, I don't think you will be disappointed.
Lord Soth.......2005-08-14
Excellent book. Lord Soth is one of my favorite characters in the Dragonlance universe. This book adds to the Lord Soth legacy and aspects of his personality and character. Additionally, it was interesting to read about Krynn's most infamous character in a setting outside of Krynn.
A must read for Soth fans.......2004-12-31
Great book! Not quit as good as Knight of the Black Rose but very close. Once again great story told well with great characters!
It's great, even if it hard to read.......2004-02-16
Warning if u like Lord Soth as darklord, you will be VERY SAD at the end of this novel.
The HIstory is a bit "hard" to get, sometimes u will need to re-read some parts to understand what is happing. Lord Soth in this novel is one of the important characters, since mainly the Sithicus domain is descripted. But, once u got the taste of reading the book.... you will feel being one traveling throught sithicus, overseeing all the events.
It is a must read for every fan from the Ravenloft Campaign setting, since it helps a lot to understand the Ravenloft Gazetter IV.
HUGE FLOP.......2003-10-24
Spectre of the Black Rose is the follow up book to Knight of the Black Rose. Lowder returns in a dubious paring with Voronica Whitney-Robinson. I am uncertain what makes this book so bad. The story has such promise and yet falls so short of the mark that it is almost sickening.
This complete tragedy of a novel might have been good if the authors would have focused on Soth. The reader comes away from the book feeling like nothing was accomplished. The best character in the novel barely works. The Bloody Cobbler who is victimized by a stupid name but has the best lines in the entire novel, struggles to save this book from being a total waste of paper. He fails. In short, the best part of this novel is the beautiful binding and cover art. This is definitely one book that you cannot judge by the cover.

I nearly ripped my own eyes out!!.......2007-03-13
I can't believe I read this! This was the WORST fantasy book I've ever read. I was a big fan of the Dragonlance series and when I saw this I jumped at the chance to read it. Soth is portrayed as an arrogant jerk - one wonders how he ever managed to woo an Elf maiden - oh wait, she was the dumbest elf maiden to ever life in any fantasy world EVER!! Don't waste your time with this nonsense. Soth's a jerk, he kills the woman he "loves" and gets cursed. Too bad he wasn't just destroyed before Weiss & Hickman thought him up - that way the story would never have been written. Yuck!
Great book for a great villan.......2003-04-08
Lord soth was one of the best books I have read. It tells us the tale of how lord soth. The most prominent hero there was in Krynn. In this book we see how he falls from grace and becomes a mockery of what he once stood for. When everLord soth commited another act of evil . I cringed as he went closer to the dark side
Soth.......2003-03-30
This book tells the tale of the events leading up to Lord Soth's mysterious change from Solamnic Knight of Paladine to Death Knight of Takhisis for those of us who have come to know him as Kitiara's creepy sidekick from the Chronicles stories. This book does not rank as one of my all time favorites in the Dragonlance series, but it is well worth reading just for the insight into Soth's character. Our favorite Death Knight can also be found in TSR's Ravenloft series in the books Knight of the Black Rose and Spectre of the Black Rose for those of you who want to know more....
Why was this book even written?.......2002-05-04
The problem with people writting books as additions to a series is most clearly defined in this book. Taking a great character like Lord Soth and then making a book with absolutely no plot, and lets not forget about how rediculousely boring it all was, was quite a feet for Edo. With his "stellar" record in the Dragonlance series, what with that book about Tanis' father having "consentual" intercourse with his mother, he definetely didn't need a "blockbuster" like this to establish his name. But seriously, find a new damn series to write for. I can't believe I wasted my time, not to mention my money reading this "book."
Could have been better.......2001-09-24
First of all, I don't recommend anyone who is not a devouted Dragonlance fan read this. It does not follow the original story made by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It might confuse some people, who do not know a lot about Dragonlance. Other than the inconsistencies in the story, it isn't a bad book. The story documants Lord Soth's decent into darkness very well. And the chapters in between the main story, which tell about the Kingpriest in Istar, are spectacular. I also enjoyed reading abuot the child Lady Korinne gave birth to. It is ashame Soth killed it. In my opinion, Lord Soth fans will enjoy this book. Anyone looking for a good horror tained soapopera will like it. Just ignore the parts where the author contradicted Weis and Hickman's version of the story.

One of the Best Romance Novels I have ever read........2006-03-10
I've read hundreds of historical and modern- day romance novels. I get bored easily with run- of- the- mill stories. This story was excellent. It's not all about sex between a spoiled virgin and a jerk of a hero. While the main couple gets the lion's share of the story, there are several other exciting characters who are engaging in a war for freedom. The characters are as passionate towards one another, as their about the war between their countries, England and Scotland.
The pages of the book come alive in realistic battle scenes, dramatic interactions between characters, and vibrant love scenes that are as emotional as they are steamy. Shannon Drake does tend to include a lot of history in her stories, but I did not find it overly so in this book.
The Story:
Lady Eleanor of Clarin has inherited her parents grand English castle. However, she must marry and produce an heir before the English king decides to assign a husband for her. She chooses to marry a life- long family friend, even though he is decades older than herself. She needs a respectable English husband to keep Castle Clarin.
While on her way to France to meet her intended husband, Eleanor's ship is seized by French pirates. In a stroke of bad luck, the French pirates are then raided by Scottish warriors. One of the leaders of the Scottish men looks familiar to Eleanor. Both she and the Scotsman recognize one another at the same time. She is the lady who showed up on the battle field years earlier, and knocked him out as he was fighting against her countrymen. In a panic, Eleanor jumps into the Irish sea to try to swim for land. Her chances are not good, but anything is better than facing the wrath of this Scottish warrior, Brendan Graham. Brendan knows that she can not survive in the freezing water, so he jumps to rescue her. He has no love for his enemy, but his human decency causes him to save her.
Once they reach France, Brendan and his friends hope to use Eleanor to both collect a ransom from her wealthy fiance, as well as using her as a bargaining tool with King Phillip of France. During the time they spend together, Eleanor and Brendan grow attracted to one another. She asks him to be her first lover, before she has to marry an elderly man. Once Brendan touches her, he is obsessed. He has to be with her as much as he can, savoring the days with her until he has to turn her over to her fiance. The two fall in love, Brendan telling her "I could die in you."
When the time comes for Eleanor to marry her fiance, Alain, Brendan can't believe that she intends to go through with it. But Eleanor has no choice, as King Phillip warns her that he will hunt her down if she turns away from his good friend, Alain. Brendan offers to run away with her, but Eleanor fears the king. On the day of the wedding, Brendan goes to the church. When he hears Eleanor make vows to Alain, he storms to his ship in hopes of sailing back to Scotland and forgetting her.
When Eleanor and Alain reach Clarin, Alain becomes deathly ill. As he is dying, he claims that he has been poisoned. Immediately, the sheriff accuses Eleanor. He has heard rumors that she has a Scottish lover, and he claims that she married Alain for his money. During a sham of an investigation, it becomes obvious that Eleanor will be found guilty and most likely hanged. She has to escape Clarin.
Brendan hears of the tragedies at Clarin and immediately rides to England to rescue Eleanor. The only safe place for her now is Scotland. However, enemies who want Eleanor's estate are determined to find her and murder her. Now Brendan and Eleanor must find peace with one another while their countries are at war. Brendan is fighting for freedom for Scotland, and for Eleanor's life.
Who wouldn't like a heroine who fought in a war???.......2005-03-05
In the beginning of this book, the heroine is fighting in a war and ends up knocking the hero out. What I loved about this book is the fact that she fights him throughout most of the book, and still it doesn't begin to bore you or make you want to burn the book!! Another classic Drake novel that will keep you reading long into the night.
Not the best but certainly the least!.......2002-07-22
This is my first Shannon Drake book and I totally dislike it, first of all I am a history buff, but Ms. Drake writes in the HR category not History, but this book can be consider a history book minus some details, I bought this book with the intentions of reading a Historical Romance novel but end up reading more about William Wallace, who I respect and love for what he believe in but that not what I expect. Ms Drake writes more about Wallace and his fights and the battle than of the romance between two people, sorry but I feel that this book was a waste of money on my part. And I advise readers not to buy this book if you are looking for a romance book to curl up at the fire with!!!!!
A Fine Romance.......2002-01-01
Lady Eleanor of Clarin is traveling to France to marry her fathers friend in order to provide security for her people. On her way her ship is rudely border by pirates. During her captivity on board she encounters Brendan Graham of Scotland. Eleanor blames all Scots for her fathers death, but cannot deny the attraction. This is the start of Shannon Drake's Seize the Dawn, which is part of the chronicles of her own family history.
Requisite of all romances is the necessary heat and sizzle between hero and heroine and there is undeniable sparks between Brendan and Eleanor. There are also the necessary hurdles to overcome, Eleanor's own prejudice against the Scots and a marriage interfere with their happily ever after. Between them there is also the tension which makes exciting reading in romance stories.
I for one look forward to reading the sequels of this series.
Don't Waste Your Money !!!.......2001-06-23
I have read many Shannon Drake books and this was the only one I can say that I did not enjoy. The story line moved very slow. I found the story to be borring and was constantly skipping over parts just to get through it. There was way to much history explained in the book (William Wallace and the war) which I found to take away from the characters and plot line. Not one of her best. Pass on this one and invest your money in one of her better books like Brave the Wind,Knight of Fire,Come the Morning etc.

SoulTypes, Finding the Spiritual Path That Is Right for You.......2003-05-14
As a growing Christian and spiritual director/companion, I highly recommend this book. It not only helps us to understand but celebrate who we are, assuring us there are others like us. From such affirmation we are gently led, not into ways in which we can "improve," but into ways which will enrich both us and our worlds.
Great step by step understanding of spiritual journeys.......2000-08-13
by personality type. This book separates each personality type into the meaning of the dominant, auxiliary, tertiary and inferior parts and further describes the importance and usefulness of each of these parts in the evolution of the spirit. Easy to read and understand. Great reference material that will be used even after it is put down the first time, and as one gains insight into personality typing and spiritual growth. Helps in understanding yourself and your relations with others. That is, as long as you can accurately type them or they have already typed themselves!
Great resource for exploring spirituality using the MBTI!.......1999-07-02
This is a great resource for those exploring their spirituality and familiar with the MBTI. It is insightful, practical, easy to read and comprehensive. I got so excited about the book that I was unable to to read it straight through. Instead, I've been hopping through the pages in my typical "N" (iNtuitive)style.

Food for Thought.......2004-04-30
I have never made garnishes before, but a friend of mine had recommended this book so I purchased it a couple weeks ago--and I love it! Since my husband is an avid fisher, I created the "Gone Fishin'" centerpiece for his birthday last week. It was a little challenging at first because I've never sculpted with fruit before, but with practice, I eventually felt more comfortable piecing the fruits together. My husband appreciated it because of the theme, and the kids loved it because it was fun to eat!
Some of the fruits tend to brown quicker, but i've found that rubbing lemon juice helps to slow the procecss. The book seems to have projects for all skill levels, but I prefer the easier ones like the penguin, alligator and reindeer because they're quick to make.

Fundamental for understanding functions of ATC........1999-11-09
This is a very good functional decomposition of the major elements of the ATC system, focusing on the work structure and systemic tasks of the humans and the equipment that comprise the system. The later chapters introducing the concepts of automation and the attendant potential benefits and risks of different automation strategies are critical for understanding the follow-on book, "The Future of Air Traffic Control: Human Factors and Automation". Both these works serve as the major rationale for selecting the "human-centered" approach to automation.
This book is written for the "lay-man" interested in ATC and automation. There are a few over-simplifications, but I cannot imagine how better to describe the general functions without getting excessively technical.
One minor "ding": Boeing's former competition in airframe manufacture was not "McDonald Douglas" (Overview, page 28), but "McDonnell-Douglas".

elegant contextual design.......2004-08-18
A beautifully researched, photographed, and produced book with
many fine examples of pools and landscapes that fit well in their surrounds.
Beautiful but not practical!.......2004-05-05
I bought the book as an aid to planning my own pool. Although the book is beautifully photographed and composed, there is very little to help the average homeowner. The pools are all vey exotic, probably European and definitely in estate settings. The book description mentioned hundreds of pools; there are only a few dozen and the few drawings are too small to be useful. Yes, POOLS is a beautiful book but only for the coffee table.

Book Description
In today's competitive international market, it is necessary to have more than just a great product. The package and label needs to draw the consumer's eye and entice them to purchase the item. There is no formula for great package design as each product varies in size, shape, and material. Designers are challenged, and their resulting creativity and innovation is showcased in this full-color volume, Package and Label Design. From hang tags on clothing items to boxes for popcorn, the 250 images in this book represent designers from thirteen countries. Filled with new and creative ideas for package and label design, you will refer to this inspiring volume again and again.
The CD-ROM companion contains all designs from this book plus 400 more from previous Rockport package and label design books. All images are referenced by designer and subject and include information about the designers and the techniques used.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, but the CD is not well designed for Mac users.......1999-01-12
This is a visually stunning book. There are many examples of very exciting packaging designs in all materials and for a broad spectrum of products and product types. Each design is briefly described and technical and author/client, etc. information is provided.
The reason it rates 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the very poorly implemented cross-platform CD-ROM that comes with the book. If you are a Mac user you will be disappointed to discover that there are no Mac files to launch and fully use the CD. In fact, the only way I could view the contents was through either Netscape or Macromedia Director. And, the Director version is old, so you have to convert the files to an updated movie to see them in that program. However, if you do that, they no longer play in Netscape. Oh, yes, you MUST have the shockwave plug-in in your Netscape plug-ins folder for this to work. All the same, many of the controls do not work in Netscape, and if you try a search the program stops altogether (you can quit, but you can't do much else).
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in package design. I would also urge the publishers to fix their CD as a huge installed userbase of package designers use Macs as a matter of course.

Book Description
Food packages are the weapons in the war to win a consumer's loyalty. With the huge investment required to develop new and compete with older brands, strategies are employed that would rival many military operations. Food Wrap is a profusely visual record of the contemporary packages that transcend the commonplace--the concepts are smart, the designs are beautiful, and what's more, they possess real appetite appeal.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding book!!!.......2006-07-04
I have owned a marketing and graphic design firm for the past 17 years and have used this book many, many times to help generate some great ideas and guide clients as to their likes and dislikes. Great books like these are a huge boon to designers. Using it we can do a quick and comprehensive study of successful food packaging. I have owned many design books over the years and this is one of the best. It shows a very wise range of styles and the vast majority are outstanding. Great design tends to be timeless design.
Title is misleading, and book is poorly written.......1998-04-17
I was disappointed for two reasons: this is not a textbook of "packages that sell"--it's an exhibit of interesting and edgy packaging that may or may not "sell". My biggest problem with the book was that the text was VERY hard to read because there was no punctuation! It's amazing what commas can do, and I finally gave up trying to read and reread passages that had no punctuation except a period now and then. And I guess I was expecting to learn some of the basic and almost subliminal techniques of packaging that break through the clutter and sell a product. I pretty much flipped through the book in less than 1/2 hour and haven't picked it up since.

Book Description
Greek Philosophers contains essays on three of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy: Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Almost uniquely for someone whose thought has been so influential, Socrates wrote nothing himself, and our knowledge of his philosophical opinions and method is derived mainly form the engaging and infuriating figure who appears in Plato's dialogues. The philosophy of Socrates and Plato is therefore closely interconnected and, and the most powerful elements of Plato's mature thought form the basis of an interpretation of knowledge, reality and morality which is still held and debated by philosophers today. Aristotle's approach to these and other issues is in many ways directly opposed to that of Plato, and has been no less influential. His scientific explorations and systematic philosophical investigation have been instrumental in the development of Western philosophy as we know it, and he remains a pivotal figure in metaphysical and ethical thinking.

Great introductions.......2003-03-23
Of the two reprint volumes (Greek and German Philosophers) that Oxford has published of its Past Masters series, I think all of the individual essays (except the one on Plato) are reprinted currently in its 'Very Short Introduction to...' series. So these volumes are a good deal because i think the 'Very Short Introduction' series are 10 bucks each. As well as being very clear and concise introductions by world renowned scholars.
Enjoyable introductions to the Greek philosophers.......2000-04-07
Oxford University Press has done a great public service by publishing its "Past Masters" series. Each title in the series is an incisive account of a particular thinker published in a portable and inexpensive format. I only wish all of the titles in the series had been available to me during my undergraduate years! The three titles included in this one volume on Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are welcome additions to the Past Masters series. All three essays are written with clarity and grace, and are worth the attention of novice and specialist alike.

Jonathan- the best actor in the world.......2002-02-15
This book has to be the best, along side Totally Jtt. It is a perfect handbook, with stunning facts, and the cover is so shiny.
I would recommend you get the paperback version, because, lets face it, you don't want to spend too much on a book, and it's simply just a waste of money to get a hardback.
Going back to the quality of John. F. Grabowski's work- It has good, understandable language, and the titles of sub headings are really professional. For example-
"The Boy Who Would Be Lion King, and "The Life Of A Star." Jonathan Taylor Thomas is truly amazing, and with this guide, you will see that the handsome young actor is even more stunning then when you first set eyes on him.
It is a great book for sketching from. Trust me, this is no ordinary book, you will immediately be on the hook. Happy reading!
It's a great bio........1999-04-26
It contains every thing that a biography needs. The pictures are great. There are no baby pictures, the picture where he is the yungest, is a pic of him when he played Kevin in "The Bradys" from 1990. The rest are HI pics, movie pics and other "normal" pics. It's a must have for every fan (even though we all now every thing about him.)

This Is For General Microsoft Knowledge.......1999-05-25
I originally meant to buy Exam Cram not Exam Prep. When using Exam Prep I thought it did not prepare me for the tests. I have used one of the Exam Cram books for TCP/IP and thought it prepared me quite well. If your looking to take your MCSE test buy EXAM CRAM not Exam Prep.
Excellent !!!.......1998-11-03
I've been teaching the MCSE courses and on of my students brought the Exam Crams and Exam Prep books in the class, asked me to read and rate them. After reading through these books, I found these books are just excellent. They are full of technical stuffs, written in real English, and in a readable manner. I have even "talked" to one of the authors of the book as well (and his name is Ed). Ed was expert in the field and he was very fun to" talk" to. I definitely would recommend the books to all my students, friends.
