Book Description

My foot's in the stirrup,

My pony won't stand;

Goodbye, old partner,

I'm leaving Cheyenne.

-- Old cowboy song

Leaving Cheyenne, Larry McMurtry's second novel, traces the loves of three West Texas characters as they follow that sundown trail: Gideon Fry, the serious rancher; Johnny McCloud, the free-spirited cowhand; and Molly Taylor, the sensitive woman they both love and who bears them each a son. Tragic circumstances mark the trail but McMurtry's style never turns melodramatic or sentimental.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic writing.......2007-06-21

This is pre-Hollywood McMurtry and, I feel, his best. He can make you laugh and cry, but this novel does more. It helps me understand my grandmother & grandfather more (Crockett County, Texas ranchers) and is a wonderful glimpse at a life so different from current American pop culture.

I read Anna Karenina and was struck by how similar the issues discussed in the book were to contemporary issues half a world away. I read Leaving Cheyenne and am struck by how different my values and lifestlye are compared to just two generations ago in the same geography.

This book is such a pleasant and mature read. When you want to escape and admire something that is close to you but eerily alien, this book can put you there.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleasing early McMurtry.......2007-03-25

Since I already have read just about every one of McMurtry's books I'm going back to the early books. This one is a fine composition based on three lives forever bound together by the warm and enigmatic female of the trio, Molly. McMurty, with his flair for the unusual, paints an original picture of an unlikely relationship that could only happen in real life. McMurtry treads where writers fear to go, always creating unique characters to unveil the complexities of the human condition. I couldn't help but fall in love with these three personalities. You have to read this book to believe it. McMurtry (along with Dos Passos) is in my opinion the greatest American writer. May he continue to bless us with his effortlessly flowing narratives. I'm about to read the final book of the Berrybender clan and I can't wait to get to it. The Berrybenders are not to be missed!

3 out of 5 stars Engaging.......2006-11-05

These characters were at least engaging enough for me to finish the book. The first McMurtry I'd read in many years was "Duane's Depressed" and I loved it. Totally engaging. So I tried this as a follow-up and it's not as good but worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars Larry's Best?.......2006-09-27

Larry McMurtry may rank among the world's more inconsistent novelists. It's hard to imagine a book less interesting than "Texasville." "Lonesome Dove," while a fine epic read, will never be seriously confused with great literature. But "Leaving Cheyenne," modest and overlooked as it is, is an exceptionally deft and compelling story, containing, in Molly, one of the great female characters in 20th century American fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2006-09-23

This isn't McMurtry's best novel, but if you like his old, pre-"Lonesome Dove" novels, I think you'll enjoy it. For that matter, if you've never read a McMurtry novel but enjoy sad, touching tales, this one is for you.

The novel follows the life of three characters--Gid, Johnny, and Molly. It starts in the twenties with the two boys, who are best friends, each trying to earn Molly's love. The novel end over 40 years later when all three are old and gray.

An interesting thing about the book is the way that McMurtry chose to tell the story. The first half, when the characters are young, is told by Gid. The last half of the book is divided into two parts. The first part is told from Molly's point of view, and the characters are in their forties. The last part is told by Johnny when the characters are in their sixities. It's a different way to approach a story and it works well. In each of the books three parts, something significant happens in the lives of the characters that alters their relationship with one another.

McMurtry's story-telling technique isn't as strong as in some of his other novels. There are portions that are a little slow and drawn out, and there are times that the characters aren't defined well enough. But, overall, it's a good read. It's still a very emotional tale and anyone would be moved by the story, which takes a good look at the mistakes we make in our youth and how nobody gets a second chance to make things right.

5 out of 5 stars Lonesome Dove.......2002-12-04

Lonesome Dove is one of the best books I have ever read. It has drama, action, love and everything that makes a good book good. The story begins with the author describing the characters and the story, and you really can connect with the characters. The main character is Gus McCrae, an ex Texas Ranger who is very lazy, and loves to drink. Despite this, he is an excellent ranger and his name is known all throughout America. The other main character is Call. He is a hard working, stubborn man who doesn't like ot talk alot. The story goes on from there. I recomend this book for advanced readers, who want a spellbinding story.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, exciting & entertaining account of early Texas.......1998-07-15

I have read "Dead Man's Walk", "Comanche Moon","Lonesome Dove" and am now starting "Streets of Larado". My only disappointment is that the books don't contain a map depicting the locations of the major events. I wish the author could post one, so I can track the events and better relate to the actual locations. I loved the books- I grew up in West Texas and can identify with much of the landscape descriptions.

Larry McMurtry has an easy-going, though smart, style, that I identify with deeply. He doesn't try to pummel you with big words and confusing sentences. He writes like it feels.

5 out of 5 stars THREE WINNERS.......1997-02-25

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW was set in a town about a hundred miles from where I live. Like all Texas towns, after the Korean War, television killed the down town area along with the picture shows. Larry was able to capture the smell of hot pop corn and hot bodies pressed against one another. Back before that war, young men had little more on their minds than how they could earn enough money after football pratice so they could take the beauty queen out - and sometimes, the football coach's wife. When the retard was killed by a fast truck, an era ended. If you are in Archer City, visit Larry's rare book store. You can pick up bargains for $5 to $1,000

    From Back Cover
Ricardo Salvatore despised greedy women-was Carly just one more? He planned to take over the company that Carly managed. So why not include her in the bargain...?

Unloved and unwanted as a child, Carly had never let anyone this close. She and Ricardo were working closely together, and their sizzling attraction boiled over. In the heat of passion, there was no hiding place: Ricardo was stunned when he learned the real truth about Carly, just as she discovered his real reason for bedding her...

    Comments:
This was a good book, but the constant sexual day dreams and thoughts the hero and heroine had were a bit much and took away from the story. It was obvious that the two were attracted to each other and wanted a more personal relationship, but that became the majority of their discussions.
Because of Ricardo's past experiences with women he constantly dissected innocent comments made by Carly, distorting them into something underhanded.

Ricardo should have discussed more of his reasons for distrusting Carly, which would have given her a look into his background and negative experiences with women.

This book was an good read.

4 out of 5 stars Actually, this was pretty good!.......2005-09-15

Oh pleeeeeease - do all these Harlequins have to have main characters with loveless childhoods? Anyway, this is just the second one of this "Harlequin Presents" series that I have read. There was some actual substance to this one which I must give credit to the author for. In a short book - with the required intimate encounters, it is hard to develop in-depth characters. As I have done in the past, I judge these short books against similar ones rather than a more meaty Regency or longer novel which has more space for character development.

Ricardo, a rather ruthless businessman wants to gain some insider information on a high-class party planning company that he wants to take over. To do that, he pretends that he wants to contract several parties and see what they are doing for others. He tags along with Carly Carlisle, one of the three founders of the company. Told by the husband of one of the other partners that Carly is out to get a rich man and is always hot-to-trot, Ricardo is rather rude and obnoxious to her. He has a disgust of greedy, manipulative women. As you can tell by the book's title, Carly has yet to find ANY man - at least not one she wants to sleep with! There is a good deal of miscommunication since Ricardo looks at innocent incidents with a jaundiced eye and Carly believes him to be a rather nasty, mean spirited and angry individual. The book follows their jaunts to two or three parties in fancy locales before the inevitable meeting of the minds and bodies occurs!

There were some rather strange scenes - why Carly lets Ricardo rip her robe off at the hotel before they even attempt to be intimate was rather bizarre. Do all party planning clients do that? They never really expressed (to each other) what sad childhoods they had, though that was one thing they had in common. For a little harmless escape, you will find this book enjoyable, while you wing your way to fabulous, exciting parties in your mind.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2003-11-01

Let me start off by saying that I have read a LOT of Chalker. This series is going beyond my already high expectaions. The 1st book was great as an introduction to the worlds and the concepts that you will be struggling with throughout the series. The 2nd book jumped an order of magnitude forward in sheer brilliance. It is set quite a few years in the future from the ending of the last book, so you can really see how to social structures that were built in the past stack up (or fail to).

A little more is revealed about the nature of the Soul Riders and how Anchor came to be in Flux. This is really great stuff, and I hope the rest of the series keeps the pace going. it could potentially even beat out the Well World books as my favourite series of his.

5 out of 5 stars The Fundamental Mishnah.......2007-05-26

It all started with the Hebrew Bible. The Mishnah collected interpretations of the Bible by Rabbis in the first two centuries of the Common Era. The Mishnah formed the basis for yet more interpretation -- called Gemara -- by more Rabbis between then and roughly 500 C.E. The Mishnah and the Gemara together form the Talmud, the foundation of Jewish law ever since.

The Mishnah is thus a very important book to Judaism. Harold Bloom (in Jesus and Yahweh: The Names Divine) thinks of it as a Jewish New Testament. But for all its significance, the Mishnah is far less easy to come by than the New Testament. Other complete Mishnah editions in English translation range from more than $160 for Herbert Danby's one-volume 1933 translation The Mishnah or the out-of-print Blackman Mishnayoth (6 Volume Set) to $400 or more for Mishnayot Kehati: Complete 21-volume Boxed Set (make sure to check for the English translation) to $975 for the top-of-the-line ArtScroll Mishnah Series now at 39 volumes and growing. (Wait for ArtScroll's annual 20-percent-off sale if you want to buy that set.) Neusner's edition performs a great service by making the complete Mishnah more widely accessible to English readers.

One of the tricks to understanding the Mishnah is placing it in the context of Jewish law and literature. A good index of Biblical citations helps, as it allows the Bible student to track down the otherwise difficult-to-find Biblical references in the Mishnah. The Neusner edition of the Mishnah would be valuable for its Biblical index alone. Its Biblical index, with roughly 750 references, well surpassed that in the Danby edition, which has roughly 500 references.

Neusner and his student coauthors also make the Mishnah somewhat more accessible by employing his trademark outline form to break up the thoughts in the text. This helps readers to understand the sometimes dense text.

But in many places, Neusner's outline form will not add enough clarity to make sense of the text. A student who wants to engage in significant Mishnah study will soon find the advantages of turning to an annotated edition like the Kehati or ArtScroll. Do get the Neusner edition as an introduction and overall reference. But try also one volume of the Artscroll series, for example its first volume, The Mishnah: Seder Zeraim Vol 1 - Berachos (Artscroll Mishnah Series).

Any way that you approach the Mishnah, you will find in it a new world of understanding of the Bible and its law. And one of its rewards is that the world of material that it provides is a large one, as it reflects the debates of hundreds of Rabbis struggling to find their own better understanding of the Divine.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-03-20

This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn more about Rabbinic Literature. Neusner gives a great introduction as well. His translation of the Mishnah is very readable in outline form.

    5 out of 5 stars A LANDMARK TRANSLATION.......2005-07-28

Jacob Neusner's translation of the Mishnah (which he undertook in collaboration with several of his pupils) was first published in 1988. It is a landmark among modern popular translations of ancient Rabbinic texts, and has rapidly become a standard work, taking its place alongside the earlier English translations by Herbert Danby and Philip Blackman.

Unlike those earlier translations, however, Neusner's approximates in English the particular flavour of the eliptical, laconic style of the original. For the first time, English-speaking readers can gain an insight into how the Mishnah says what it says, without the paraphrases and glosses of Danby and Blackman.

But Neusner's approach to the translation has its price. First, the text does not flow like Danby's translation. Readers are made starkly aware that the Mishnah is a compilation of teachings, not a work of literature. Second, the terse, eliptical style results from the Mishnah's being written originally for readers who understood not only the subject matter but also the set of the minds that considered it and the milieu that cradled it. There is therefore much in the text that is taken for granted, and uninitiated readers can feel at a disadvantage.

To meet the needs of the uninitiated, however, Neusner provides an extensive introduction. This places the Mishnah in context and explains its purpose. It is a mine of information presented with the clarity and simplicity of style which only the greatest scholars command. Indeed, the introduction is valuable for the expert as well as the novice.

In short, this is an important work. Its value lies in two particular areas: the non-paraphrastic style of the translation that imitates as closely as reasonably possible the style of the original, and the extent and quality of the background material provided in the Introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner .......2004-11-22

The great advantage of this work is that it has the entire Mishnah in one volume. It is also by and large readable. However it is no substitute for the Hebrew original and certainly not a proper tool for in- depth learning. The translation is not always completely accurate. I do not want to show ingratitude for at one point this work helped me a lot. I do however believe it is a tool for a stage in ' learning' and that the deeper understanding awaits those who will at some point be able to meet with the Hebrew original and its many great commentators.

    3 out of 5 stars Complimentary.........2003-12-31

This book's greatness is a quantitative one [ie a single volume;] it's attempts to offer an extremely literal translation of the original hebrew text, and emulate the terseness that the hebrew has, can lead the uninitiated reader to many dead-ends in understanding. The truth is that minor literal variations from the actual intent of the hebrew simply do not appear to the all-english reader; nothing can make up for looking back to the actual hebrew when a difficulty arises in the presentation of the text. So, if you have a knowledge of hebrew, hebrew grammar, and are looking for a text to either compliment your library or saturate the desires of the completely uninitiated individuals you come into contact with until they realize that they need to work on their hebrew comprehension, then this book could be what you're looking for; if, on the other hand, you speak/read only english and are trying to get close to the text despite your current difficulty, then you should realize that to become a "master of the mishna" you will eventually have to learn hebrew, something you should be working on continually anyway, and until you have learned hebrew [,a thing that happens gradually,] you'll want a book, or a set of books, that addresses your growing needs and potentials, something this book does not, something The Philip Blackman Set certainly does as well as providing a form of the text of the mishna that's incredibly easier to follow, by means of notation and blocked-text and the orginal hebrew [to reference increasingly as your comprehension of the language increases,] than the bulleted form offered by Neusner. Lastly, if you're Just looking for the cheapest way to get an entire english translation of the mishna into your hands, then you have the wrong attitude, one you'll regret as your learning increases. So, While this book, [Neusner's Mishna,] is wholly a translation of the text, in combination with another book [or set of books] containing English commentary on the Mishnah and then another book, [or set of them,] containing a completely hebrew version of the Mishnah, it could prove itself to be of substantial value. Neusner's scholarship and skill as an intensely technical and descriptive author, and thoroughly learned individual, shouldn't be questioned for an instant; he's a wonderfully intellegent man [ something that's evidenced in the introduction and foreward he provides in the book, to the book. But, this is simply a translation -- something that doesn't allow his true understanding of these issues to shine through to one who can't understand the myraid meanings and implications that abound in the entire canon of Jewish Religious Literature.] Ultimately, I feel as though this translation's truest value is when it's in the author and his immediate students' own hands, [eg as a sort of classroom text, referrenced in conference and consort with the other book(s) I mentioned.]

                      Book Description

This gourmet travel guide to the artisanal and farmstead cheesemakers of Vermont shows how the cheese is made, describes the different types of handcrafted goat-, sheep-, and cow's-milk cheeses, and tells you where and when to go to see them being made. In recent years the number of artisanal and farmstead cheesemakers in Vermont has exploded. These dedicated craftspeople make distinctive, high-quality cheeses from the milk of their own cows, sheep, and goats; age them in their own caves; and ship them to restaurants, gourmet food markets, and cheese lovers all over the world. Henry Tewksbury, a cheese expert and a passionate devotee of handcrafted Vermont cheese, is your guide to the cheeses, their makers, and their stories. He gives a brief overview of the cheesemaking process, introduces us to the cheesemakers and their herds, and then describes dozens of varieties in delectable detail. He tells you where to go and when to visit to see the cheeses being made, and provides details on where Vermont cheeses can be purchased, both within and outside the state. French flaps, 40 black & white photographs, 16 color photographs, 1 map, glossary, resources, index.

                      • Vermont handcrafted cheeses have become one of the trendiest items in the gourmet world. • Vermont's cheesemakers have been featured in articles in Gourmet, The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, and many other publications

5 out of 5 stars From the Cheesemakers' Perspective.......2006-03-30

Henry Tewksbury spent the better part of his career as Peter Tewksbury in California, where he produced films and TV shows, such as Father Knows Best and My Three Sons. In his later years, he started a second life in Vermont as a cheese expert and consultant and to mark the change, reverted to his real first name, Henry. Tewksbury's transformation from Hollywood bigwig to small town cheese connoisseur is oddly parallel to that of many of the cheesemakers whose stories he tells in this informative and engaging book. While a few were born and raised on the farm, others left successful jobs in law, finance, teaching and other professions for the lure of healthy country living and the chance to try something new.

There are several well written and comprehensive guides available for selecting and serving artisanal and farmstead cheeses from around the world, including many that are produced in the USA. What sets this book apart from all the rest is its focus on the hard-working people who have created these fine cheeses: how they got started in the business, how they learned about making cheese (often with the help of others who came before them, but sometimes also through trial and error), and what their daily life is like. Of course, there is also information about each producer's cheeses, along with Tewksbury's personal assessment. His admiration for what these cheesemakers have accomplished, their vision and passion, and the originality of each cheese shines through in the writing.

Potential readers should understand that the book is a snapshot of Vermont's artisanal cheese movement as it existed about five years ago when the book was researched and written. Most of the information remains valid today, but a few things have changed. The most notable "omission" is Mateo and Andy Kehler from Jasper Hill Farm in northeast Vermont. Their cheeses are now considered to be among the very best made in America, but they were not yet in operation at the time the book was written. Unfortunately, Henry Tewksbury died the year after the book was published, so unless someone else takes up the charge, there will be no update. That, however, should not deter the cheese enthusiast who wants to know "the story behind the story" of farmstead cheesemaking. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars VERMONT CHEDDAR IS TO DIE FOR..........2005-02-01

For several years now I've been placing my order with Cabot Farms or Grafton village for some of their wonderful, aged, Vermont white cheddar cheese. Wisconsin not withstanding, I am convinced that the finest cheddar cheeses in the world come from Vermont, not to mention the fact that they are found in some of the most gorgeous settings to be found anywhere. You can't help but picture New England on a snowy winter's day.

That's why this book was such a great read. I was already familiar with many of the Farms mentioned by Mr. Tewksbury, having visited many of their websites in the past, but I certainly found some new places I was not aware of. Learning about Vermont's cheesemakers and the products they lovingly craft makes eating them all the more enjoyable. Tewksbury tells us where and how each artisan makes cheese, which operations welcome visitors, and where to purchases the cheeses.

Thank God for the Internet because no matter where you live you can have these wonderful products of Vermont sent right to your doorstep.

I found this a really stunning intro into the world of guns and gunsmithing. Everything is completely clear, and the excellent illustrations mean that even the non-expert can really enjoy the book andget the most from the author's clear and concise information. I would certainly recommend the book to anyone with an interest inthis field.

4 out of 5 stars An "Almost" Fantastic Book..........2006-09-19

This is a VERY comprehensive book which runs the gamut from early firearms up to and including (most of) the modern arms found today in sport or military usage. The photos are first rate, as are the descriptives at the beginning of each chapter.

I can overlook the typos (frequent as they might be) in favor of the sheer history of featured weapons, such as the guns of the old west, and the civil war era.

The book is also sectioned off into pistols/revolvers, rifles/shotguns, submachine guns, light machine guns, and heavy machine guns.

Most every country that manufactures these firearms is covered, although some glaring omissions are present, most notably the Walther P99 auto pistol. Since this volume came out in 2000, it would defy logic that this weapon would NOT be included, since it's appearance in 1998-1999.

Still, this is a nice addition to ANY coffee table (or bookshelf), and is well worth the paper it's printed on.

                      2 out of 5 stars Poor.......2004-05-10

Despite having good descriptions, the book does not contain enough modern guns, and lists too many ancient ones. For example, there is not a single mention of a Glock handgun in the whole book! Worthless, in my opinion.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2003-05-30

Great illustrated text of the history and details of famous firearms. Although this is not an all inclusive list of firearms it has all of the historical as well as technical innovative firearms of the world, my only complaint is its grouping of firearms by country. This is now one of my favorite books to add to my more technical books on firearms.

3 out of 5 stars Chock Full of Great Pictures...and Typos.......2003-04-26

Well I'm pretty neutral on this book. It features many good pictures of good guns, inlcluding some that I've never seen (the Terry Pattern Carbine, Kuntz Air Rifle, and Whitney-Burgess Carbine stick out). However, it has more typos and misplaced photos than you can imagine! Two examples are the editor not knowing how to spell the "Keene" part of the Remington-Keene Rifle and placing the bizarre-looking Webley-Fosbery Semiautomatic Revolver's photo on the description of the conventional Webley & Scott Mark V's description (the weapon is clearly stamped "Webley-Fosbery", too). There are also errors in the statistics of the weapons, but these are probably due to typos more than factual mistakes. The descritions, in some cases, are also too scant (the aforementioned Kuntz Air Rifle needs a little more and the book fails to mention the famous Ferguson Rifle, though many of the photos appear to be taken at the West Point Museum, which has a Ferguson Rifle on display). In summary, if you like over 1,000 gun photos, then get this book. If you don't like over 1,000 typos, then don't get this book.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2006-05-19

"Planes, Jets & Helicopters" is lots of fun and doesn't require anything more than the typical 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. Gives good instructions on how to build AND how to throw the planes.

This book makes a great way to have fun with the kids. Our [...] sons love this book. The planes vary from the simple spinning dart to a few slick jets. We first discovered this book at the library. With all the kid abuse toward the book we finally had to buy our own copy.

I was also surprised at how much fun my inner engineer/crafty-person was having.

My only complaint would be that we found a couple of instances in the book where the instructions referred to "point A" and there was no "point A" to be found. But with the figures/pictures it was easy enough to figure out.

Overall... a lot of fun for the family and the engineer/child/crafty-person in you.

                                              Book Description

With its blend of Eastern mysticism and Western culture, Hesses best-known and most autobiographical work is one of literatures most poetic evocations of the souls journey to liberationHarry Haller is a sad and lonely figure, a reclusive intellectual for whom life holds no joy. He struggles to reconcile the wild primeval wolf and the rational man within himself without surrendering to the bourgeois values he despises. His life changes dramatically when he meets a woman who is his opposite, the carefree and elusive Hermine. The tale of the Steppenwolf culminates in the surreal Magic TheaterFor Madmen Only!Originally published in English in 1929, Steppenwolf s wisdom continues to speak to our souls and marks it as a classic of modern literature.

Theres nothing much to say, its a good product, just wish it was a little smaller given that i got it paperback to carry it inside the jacket pockets, half an inch smaller would have been good, even if it still fits its troublesome and a little annoying that you have to struggle to tuck it in. Still the rest is pretty good and the cover picture is nice.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Understood.......2007-08-13

There are people out there, reading this review now, who have gone thru life feeling as though no one has ever understood them. Some of those people will read this book, 'Steppenwolf', & it will hit them like a bolt(& some wont like it at all). Not only will a few of them feel as though they have finally been understood, but they might feel as though at last they can begin to understand themselves!
Yes, there is someone who understands. His name is Hesse. Unfortunately he has passed on, he was from an earlier generation. But you know, when he lived people from all over the world wrote him letters asking for his understanding. He answered them all, & he usually had good advise for them. & he was able to understand not only because he was intellgent, but also because he had also suffered the problems of his 'Steppenwolf' himself. Yes, it might seem that he were writing this best of all books about each of us individually, but it was, in fact, autobiography. Half autobiography, half poem, & 100% masterpiece. Please read it, & dont allow the 1st 80 pages throw you off- it is going to come alive for you, as it has for people since 1927. You might be in for a treat.
However, some dont feel this way, especially these days. It is a little odd, I feel, that Hesse (who was so popular with readers from my generation in the early 1970s) has had a decline in popularity from 1980 on. He doesnt seem to strike the same chord in todays young readers as he did 30 years ago. Maybe because his books spoke about the importance of spirt over that of technology, I dont know. I dont think Hesse would have seen the rise of the PC & the internet as a bad thing at all, & think it would have been right up his alley, & that he might have made the internet a better thing than it is. In fact, the theme of 'The Glass Bead Game' brings to mind todays internet, & there is a website devoted to just that. But, for me anyway, the fact that todays generation has sort of rejected Hesse is one of the more sad things about it, because I would have believed that they would have embraced him even more than mine did. I think the reason that they havnt might be because that while they are very much in favor of the enlightment that Siddhartha, Goldman, Harry Haller, Sinclair, etc ultimately reach, they have never experienced the PROBLEMS of the Steppenwolf that set those characters on that road in the 1st place. I think that those kinds of problems might have been unique to my generation, & that Hesse came along for Americans just at the right time. It seems that the times have changed.

3 out of 5 stars Mix of Darkness and Mysticism.......2007-08-02

In this unusual novel by Herman Hesse, Harry Haller is the Steppewolf, lonely, isolated, and struggling with conflicting desires of arrogance, emptiness, and longing. Things change dramatically when he meets a woman quite different from him. All seems to lead to the magic theatre, which made for interesting if confusing reading. Hesse blends eastern mysticism with western culture and a somewhat anti-bourgeois message, and many persons battling depression have apparently found it easy to identify with the main character. We read this book in a college literature class and it left us (and even the teacher) confused, although many say's the story is more comprehensible once you've read other Hesse novels. If you like dark stories with conflicting emotions and mysticism, this book may be for you.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Tale, but Not a Casual Read.......2007-07-23

In the post-millennial era, Herman Hesse's STEPPENWOLF seems like a quaint and faintly pompous throwback to the LSD-driven late 1960's - Woodstock, Joplin, Haight-Ashbury, Hendrix, the summer of love, Jim Morrison, and "Let It Be." The real surprise comes from realizing that Hesse published the original, German language version of this book in 1927, not 1972.

The story centers around a lonely intellectual named Harry Haller, a man of culture and taste who clearly holds himself in far higher esteem than his life's achievements would dictate. So much so, in fact, that Haller views most everyone and everything around him with a disdainful condescension. He even disdains the bourgeois class of which he is by all appearances a member (think Groucho Marx's line about not wanting to be a member of a club that would have someone like himself as a member). In his over-intellectualized manner, Harry has partitioned the world - and himself - into two modes: the rational, academic Harry Haller mode and the emotional, feeling world he ascribes Jekyll and Hyde-like to the wolf from the steppe that he harbors within himself. Naturally, it is the Steppenwolf that Haller struggles to hold at bay. As a consequence of his efforts, Harry is lonely, bored, and purposeless, at a stage where the only meaningful recourse is a razor blade applied to the wrists.

Everything begins to change when Harry stumbles across an advertisement for the anarchist Magic Theater and a pamphlet "Treatise on the Steppenwolf. Not for Everybody." whose message seems oddly tailored to Harry himself. Shortly after, he meets the mysteriously alluring Hermine and the elusive young jazz saxophonist Pablo (at, of all places, the Balance Hotel - get it?). Haller's first reaction to jazz is hyperintellectual, all music theory and analysis, but Hermine gradually brings him around to feeling the music for itself. She slowly but steadily opens Harry up to the wider world of feelings and emotions, using methods as varied as ballroom dance lessons and a surprising illicit lovemaking arrangement. After weeks of preparation and a certain amount of sexual teasing from the increasingly androgynous and shape-shifting Hermine, Harry is deemed finally ready to discover his multiple selves in the drug-inspired carnival of the Magic Theater. The grand finale reads like an extended Timothy Leary LSD trip.

Despite being decades ahead of its time in attitude, content, and frankness, STEPPENWOLF remains something of a chore for modern readers. Hesse's writing is dense and laboriously formal, and the sentiments expressed are incessantly despairing when not filled with tired and too-lengthy philosophical dissertations (never more so than in the the Steppenwolf pamphlet). The author's incorporation of Eastern mysticism as well hardly holds the edge it doubtless offered in 1927. Furthermore, Harry Haller is a decidedly unlikable protagonist - patrician, priggish, and an insufferable esthete. All that being said, STEPPENWOLF remains a remarkable literary accomplishment, a 40-year precursor of the 1960's counterculture movement and the so-called Age of Acquarius. "Know Yourself," "Make Love, Not War," and "If It Feels Good, Do It" sound like nothing so much as admonitions from Hermine and Pablo to live life in the moment. Perhaps the Magic Theater was reborn in MacArthur Park after all.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the effort.......2007-07-06

I read this book in 2001 when I first started making an effort to read and still remember the effect in had on me. I would read about 10 pages a night before having to put it down because in a lot of ways the story brought on a feeling of emptiness and depression similar to what the main character experienced in the story. Yet the story and the character Harry Haller made me think, look at myself and life which to me is one of the most valuable things a book, story or experience can provide a person. The story has a chance to stir your soul if you reflect on the main themes and question - what is life.

It seems that the times have changed

5 out of 5 stars You must face the razor to find the kingdom.......2006-01-16

Here I am, like the Steppenwolf, approaching the age of 50. I understand him now for I have lived his life. His deepest thoughts are mine- indeed, they read exactly like my own journals. No wonder I am told that Hesse is my soul mate. It is true.

I lived Steppenwolf's solitary life. I knew his crisis. I share his rejection of bourgeois society because it grates the fundamental essence of my soul. And I know what he means by the strength derived from knowing that you can leave this world any time. I know the conviction to never sell yourself into wage slavery for mere money. I know his night wanderings, his books, his music, his rooms, his cigars, and his wine. I know.

But I also know his central crisis. For when we are ready then a door really does open to a higher perspective. I literally walked through that door in the wall for "madmen only." Like the wulf I had always sensed the golden moments that form the golden path to that door. I was eventually shown it. I had always suspected that man was more than a half rational animal, that he was a child of the Gods and destined to immortality. When you are ready, when you are sick enough of the petty ego, you will be shown the kingdom on the other side of time and appearances. It is just necessary to stumble through your share of dirt and humbug before you reach Home.

Time and the world, money and power belong to the small and shallow people. To the rest, the real men, belongs nothing. Nothing but death- and eternity- and the kingdom.

This is a must for die-hard Steppenwolf fans and I've been one since 1968 when my brother and I got their first album. This is an excellent book with no holds barred. John Kay and Einarsson has written a great book. There has been so much talk about the
legal battles after the bogus band appeared and wrecked the name of Steppenwolf in the eighties, but John Kay is frank and let all living past members come forward and tell their version.
Kay isn't holding things back from his personal life as well which makes it very interesting, especially when you know about his background. I've been fortunate enough to travel with the band on several tours in Germany, Denmark and Sweden and has always found John Kay and his fellow bandmenbers Michael Wilk, Ron Hurst and Danny Johnson and their crew to be nicest of
people. I only have one complaint about the book: It's too short!

i really enjoyed this book.it told me many things i never knew about john kay, like the fact that he has never ridden a motorcycle because he is legally blind...yes it is written from his perspective but his version is a very important one.this book was an easy read and it kept me interested in it through out the whole thing.as a follow up to the book i watched the vh1
behind the music about steppenwolf which confirmed most of the things in the book..in my opinion i do think john should forgive the other guys or at least come to peace with it and them .we all do a lot of dumb things in life thats why we need friends to help us get back up again.i hope the wolf continues to rock much longer!its never too late to start all over again.

2 out of 5 stars From one who was there.......2001-01-08

I knew these guys and EVERYONE in the band contributed to their success. This book is a piece of John Kay self serving fantasy. When John left the band in the late 70's to persue a solo career he tried, unsuccessfully at that time, to block the other members from performing under the name Steppenwolf. Why? They worked just as hard to make the band a success. They wrote many of the hits John takes credit for in his book and they contributed just as much to Steppenwolf's sound and unique style. When performing during this period the band was every bit as good without him as they ever were with him. Only when he realized that there were fans ($$) still out there and that there was still money to be made from the Steppenwolf name did he re-associate himself with the band. Nick St. Nicolas, Goldy McJohn et-al NEVER broke the faith with their thousands of loyal fans. Just recently Nick won a long legal battle over song rights unjustly clamed by John. John Kay is, and will always remain, his own biggest fan. This book is nothing more than a monument to a monumental ego.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Steppenwolf fans.......1999-08-19

This is an excellent read. I've learned so much from this book about Steppenwolf that I wanted to know. Although it's written in John Kay's perspective, the book contains several quotes from former members and friends. It's well written and an easy read. I couldn't put it down.

4 out of 5 stars The inside story of Steppenwolf.......1999-04-19

I have just read this book and found it fascinating reading, but then I'm a big Steppenwolf fan, go figure :) The writing isn't as good as it could have been but if you're at all interested in Steppenwolf or Sixties rock in general, it's a book you will not be able to put down. Includes anecdotes of John Kay's encounters with quite a large number of other struggling rockers who would also later find success.
