Book Description

She has hair of ginger and lovely green eyes, and she has just been transported with her family from Terezin to Auschwitz. In short order, her father commits suicide, and her mother and younger brother are dispatched to the gas chambers, but 15 year old Hanka Kaudersova is still alive.Faced with the choice of certain death in the camp or working in a German military brothel on the eastern front, she chooses a chance at life.Passing as an Aryan, Hanka's days in the brothel are full of cold and hunger, fear and shame. She is sustained by her loathing of the men who visit her and by a fierce, indomitable will to live. This devastatingly beautiful novel soars beyond the nightmare to leave the reader with a transcendent sense of hope.

5 out of 5 stars The choice between life and death is a very thin line.......2007-05-07

Would you become a whore in order to survive? This is the question that A 15 year old Jewish girl Hanka Kaudersová asks herself when she is given the chance to pass herself off as a gentile in the concentration camp she and her family have been sent too during the last months of the war.

She is lucky to have "lovely green eyes", and reddish hair, she doesn't physically look Jewish and so she has a chance of life and she takes it even though she hates what she has to become in order to survive.

With all her family dead, her mother and younger brother sent straight to the gas chambers, her father choosing to throw himself on the camp's electric fence than to have to live in such terrible conditions, Hanka has no one left to call her own, all she has is her will to live but is it powerful enough to get her through the horrors ahead of her as she learns to ply her trade as a soldier's whore?

With many other girls, all older than she is, no one knows she is only 15 years old, she has pretended to be 18, Hanka or Skinny as she is known as has to service between 12 to 15 German soldiers each day and this she does even though she hates every moment of it.

Her virginity is lost in the brothel, only she knows this, though a German officer asks her with curious detached interest about her first sexual experience which Hanka tells him with equal detachment was "strange". The men she is forced to have sex with she has no feelings for, no passion, no desire, no love, no lust, nothing other than hatred and fear for what she must do in order to see the sun rise the next day.

However Hanka is a survivor, and her friendships with the other girls in the Brothel especially the enigmatic Estelle sustains her each and every dat and she does survive when all those around her perish one by one.

An evocative cruel read that leaves you wanting more even when the last page has been turned.

4 out of 5 stars "A hard-edged story of hope and survival".......2004-08-31

Czech-born Lustig is known for his penetrating stories of survival and suffering, often revolving around his own experiences in Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps during World War II. There is little sympathetic about his treatment of the Holocaust, but in Lovely Green Eyes we learn the story of Hanka, a young Jewish girl who manages to survive in the camp by passing herself off an Aryan, thus her nickname, Lovely Green Eyes. Lustig's prose is stripped bare and reveals all the horrors of such an existence but at the same time, the novel is a hard-edged story of hope and survival.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwrenching and Beautiful Indeed!.......2006-05-13

Couldn't have said it better than 'msmjb.' In the many years that I've spent reading these historical romance novels I've yet to read a heroine equal to Melanthe. Beautiful, cold, wicked, and unforgetable. And Ruck, his loyalty and devotion is unrivaled. Once in a long while you come upon these timeless characters whose stories hit deep in your gut and in your heart...

4 out of 5 stars For the record - this isn't Middle English, it's Modern English.......2006-04-08

Yes - really. This is what scholars consider Modern English. This IS dumbed down, compared to what was actually spoken in the 14th century! The dialogue in this book is post-Shakespearen, post-Renaissance, MODERN English. Old English is practically German, completely unrecognizable to the average 21st century reader. Middle English isn't a lot better to the uninitiated. Although it's easily recognized as "English", it's also very much like French, while maintaining some of the Germanic characteristics from Old English. Very few contemporary readers without degrees in medieval English would be able to read this book comfortably if the dialogue was actually in Middle English. Try reading the Canterbury Tales. This is Modern English - the English of Shakespeare, and Defoe, and Johnson. There is nothing "difficult" about this, except for the unfamiliar constructions. Yes - it presents a challenge to those looking for "fluff" romance (which, I admit, is precisely what I would be looking for in a romance). But it's not Middle English.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Kinsale...(4 1/2 stars).......2004-12-07

Sir Ruck, at the age of just seventeen, has lost his life as he once knew it... until a beautiful, but cold princess comes to his rescue on a whim. From that day forward, she is his sworn Lady - The Princess Melanthe.

After not seeing her for many years, by some weird twist of fate, Ruck finds himself in the position to return her favor. Melanthe is in danger and Ruck is determined to guard her with his life.

For My ladys Heart was such an emotional read. It started slowly, but once it got going, it was a hard book to set down.
Ruck and Melanthe were an interesting match. Ruck was so obliging and honorable and beautiful...Melanthe was so spirited and arrogant and sometimes childish. I loved Melanthe even when I hated her. The love between Ruck and Melanthe was bittersweet and I swear the whole book is worth reading just to see them exchange their vows of marriage.

Laura Kinsale continues to amaze me. For My Ladys Heart must truly have been a challenge to write. I cant get over how vividly Kinsale was able to capture the life and the speech of the times.

My only real complaint with this story was the final conflict and the choices that Melanthe made that led to it. I understand why she did what she did, but it still frustrated me to no end...All I can say is that with Melanthe as his wife, Ruck will have quite a handful...he must really love a challenge :o)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best historical romances I've read.......2004-06-22

I haven't read many of Kinsale's books, but was very pleasantly surprised with this one. So much historical romance is formula fiction, light on character, plot, and history. Kinsale doesn't just throw in a castle, a suit of armor, a few misunderstandings and some sex and call it a book. These characters and their relationships are complex and fascinating. I really could not put this one down until I was finished--bags under my eyes at work the next day.

4 out of 5 stars For My Lady's Heart **Great**.......2004-05-18

This is a wonderful read. The hero Ruck is fabulous. Not your run of the mill rake. He has strong principles and he lives by them. Nor do you find your everyday herione. She is a widow, she's devious, a liar, a tease. Yes she has all of those usually villianous qualities but she is trying to stay alive in a twisting maze of treachery. I loved being a part of watching them find each other. I heartily reccomend this one. :)

0425140040From Publishers WeeklyRuck, an invincible English knight, loses his new wife when she declares herself a prophet and pledges her life to the Church. Ruck's attention now falls to the Princess Melanthe, the shrewd, widowed head of the powerful Monteverde family in Italy and to whom he swears allegiance. But Gian, the patriarch of the equally powerful Navona family, plans to marry Melanthe and merge their two kingdoms, and he will murder anyone who jeopardizes his plan. Thirteen years later, Ruck meets Melanthe again and joins the princess's entourage as they journey to reach her estate before Gian catches up with her. On the way, she reveals to Ruck that his wife was burned as a heretic. Melanthe and Ruck exchange wedding vows and consummate the marriage. But the potential repercussions of their union and an advancing plague threaten them, so the two escape to Ruck's estate, which he struggles to reclaim since it was lost through legal confusion. The honeymoon bliss doesn't last long because they have been seen by someone who alerts Gian, who isn't ready to let Melanthe go. Kinsale's (The Shadow and the Star) tale is light on vitality and heavy on Middle English, plot twists and tedium.

Angel Cardenas is a hard-working police detective in 21st century Los Angeles, which has become a gritty, sprawling metropolis that stretches from southern California all the way past the Mexican border to the Gulf of Mexico. Cardenas has one special talent that makes his job easier: he's an "intuit," capable of intuiting what others will do in any given situation. His new case begins when a seemingly innocuous businessman is found dead, missing his vital organs-which bring good money on the black market-and all his money. Cardenas is nearly killed when he visits the victim's home and the house explodes, and new questions quickly arise. Where are the woman and the young girl who had been living in the home? And why doesn't the victim's I.D. match his DNA scan? The deeper he gets into the case, the more puzzled Cardenas becomes. He crisscrosses L.A. looking for clues among the kid-gang underworld, the high-tech, highly illegal black market, an American Indian crime syndicate, and other fascinating settings-all in search of The Mock, a stone-cold killer who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful if read following "Montezuma Strip.".......2005-04-06

I have enjoyed this book immensely, not finding the Spanglish jargon to be a problem. I think it would help many readers to first pick up Foster's "Montezuma Strip", in which the character of Angel Cardenas is introduced in a collection of short stories. Everything makes more sense as the short stories sort of bring you up to speed on the setting and the language and flesh out the characters a little more. The Mocking Program can be read alone, I suppose, but not for a completist such as myself.

4 out of 5 stars Likable characters and interesting plot.......2003-12-04

I usually judge books like this by how much I think about them while I'm doing other things, like working, and how much I look forward to picking them back up. This one passed the test. I immediately liked and cared about Cardenas and Hyaki. The plot wasn't inscrutable but a few things kept me guessing. I loved the genetically altered primates and the imaginative technology. The "Spanglish" was slightly offputting at first, but being a romance language speaker (not Spanish, though), I enjoyed trying to figure out the futuristic argot.

This was a quick, enjoyable read. I am amazed at the range of topics that Mr. Foster writes about. His books are almost always satisfying and "The Mocking Program" is no exception.

4 out of 5 stars AI, Teenage girl/Mneumonic, Intuitive Profiler... try it........2003-11-29

This book keeps the pace moving. The plot keeps you guessing (though one of your guesses will likely be right). The author isn't afraid to take you into very imaginative territory. There are the wugs. Insect like AI that never harm anyone, but form a very interesting element in the plot. A teenage Jenny Mneumonic with an abusive father. A jungle of semi intelligent genetically engineered primates that are exploring their humanity (good and bad). This author isn't afraid to take you anywhere.

You also get the feel that the author is teaching a little Spanish on the way (i.e. he'll use a phrase and then when it is repeated or used in some reflexive way, he'll switch in the Spanish term instead).

The book leaves you a bit in the sky wondering if the ending has really landed. True, the immediate problems are solved, but there remains a mystery. I imagine a sequel to this would be very facinating. You have a teenage girl who not only has to deal with the standard wiles of fading adolescence, but whose parents were killed, has a mneumonic computer for brains, and may still be hunted by her father (who supposedly died, and may not even be real in the conventional sense). You have a inspector who has intuition better than any psychic 900 number. You have an evoloving AI network that spans nations with an unknown and unsuspected agenda. .... A lot can still happen. Read some of the pages and find out for yourself.

2 out of 5 stars Original plot, but too many distractions.......2003-10-30

The author has a very creative plot here but unfortunately it is waylaid by three distractions: editing problems (e.g. using "irregardless" instead of "regardless"), an overabundance of futuristic, invented jargon, and finally being set too far in the future.

Some sentences, especially at the beginning of the book, are nearly impossible to understand. This is frustrating and gets in the way of enjoying the story. An example: (p.14)

The ganglet of ninlocos arrived before the food did. They swaggered in past the protesting door, the lanky chieflado in the lead spizzing it with a spinner whose ident was torqued to reflect instead of inform. Behind the chingaroon ambulated a group of negs and poses, though which was who and who was witch [sic] was hard to say at first glance.

In fact, he includes a glossary at the end of the book. I didn't realize it was even there until I finished the book, but even had I known, it would have been too cumbersome to flip to the back every time I read a made-up term.

I also wondered why the story delves into futuristic ideas that aren't relevant to the plot. Perhaps this appeals to devoted sci-fi readers (I'm not one of them) but I couldn't see why he set the story so far in the future when the key technology could believably exist sooner. This would have saved quite a bit of explanations of inventions, concepts, gadgetry, etc.

I also found the ending to be pretty weak...I won't explain why since that would ruin it for others, but I thought the original and creative storyline deserved better.

Great idea for a story, and very unique plot twists. May be worth a quick read if you can look past (or enjoy) the jargon.

2 out of 5 stars Sappy, Full of Holes, and Blah Ending.......2003-10-11

About the best I can say for this book is that it isn't really BAD. It starts out pretty interesting, but then its energy seems to slowly drip out of it until the ending feels like merely a dotting of "i"s and a crossing of "t"s. Also, at about the midpoint, the book takes on a bit of a sappy tone which increases throughout the remainder of the story. I also have problems with the amount of future slang used. I understand that Foster is using it to set the tone, but even the main character uses it constantly: it just gets too tiresome trying to parse it into real English so you can figure out what he's saying. There also seems to be some kind of problem with the editor: I counted five uses of the non-word "irregardless" in this book. I can't understand how anyone who's written as much as Alan Dean Foster could use that "word" instead of the proper "regardless." I sure can't understand why his editors didn't catch it. There are also several scenes where someone didn't catch contextual problems. For instance, at one point, the protagonist has been disarmed, has escaped, and has incapacitated one of his assailants. He then goes about his merry business without taking the captured, unconcious assailant into custody for questining and without picking up his weapon (and people are trying to kill him). In another case, he tells someone that a certain event has happened to her father. Suddenly, that person seems to have full knowledge of the event. Specifically, she knows when it happened even though no one has told her that. There are also several characters introduced into the book who don't seem to have any purpose. They're just there for a page or two and then they're gone: flavor, I guess. In general, there also seem to be a lot of cases where important things happen and no one does anything to track them down and figure out why, who or how. They're just like magical events which conviently appear to push the plot along. If you've got some time to kill, reading this book might be worth a shot. But, otherwise, despite it's promising beginning, it's not really worth the effort.

                        Book Description

Most health-conscious eaters tend to avoid Indian food because of the high-fat methods used to prepare many of the popular dishes. Leading Indian cookbook writer Mridula Baljekar's revolutionary methods allow readers to enjoy deliciously spiced Indian meals, packed with flavor and nutrition, but without added fat. Drawing upon her extensive knowledge of traditional Indian cooking techniques, flavors, and spices, Baljekar has devised no-added-fat cooking techniques that dramatically revise how delicious Indian food is prepared—without altering its authentic taste. With insightful cook's tips featured throughout, the 150 easy-to-prepare recipes include Vegetable Soup, Spiced Chapatis, Ground Lamb Kebabs, King Prawns with Baby Zucchini, Fish Tikka, Fresh Tomato Chutney, Tandoori Chicken, Saffron Rice, Savory Potato Mash, Mixed Vegetable Curry, Spiced Pears, Rose-Flavored Iced Dessert, and more.

                        4 out of 5 stars Great book..........2007-08-13

Two things sold me on this book - a limited number of spices/herbs to work with and the use of as little oil/fat as possible. All the recipes I've tried have been great and easily committed to memory after a few meals. I was able to find every ingredient I needed at Nashville's local Indian grocery. Hint - use fresh curry leaves. I looked at a good number of books before settling on this one and I'm glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty recipes that work.......2002-03-01

Recipes in this cookbook are straight-forward and produce great results. I particular recommend the fish in coconut and coriander sauce (mashli ghashi) and leaf-wrapped fish (patra-ni-machchi). Chicken in yogurt (dahi murgh) was also a big hit. The author is especially attentive to the use of spices and gives clear instructions to get the most from them. It takes time and attention to produce a main dish and vegetable, but it is worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars One of Victoria Magazine's wondeful books.......2007-09-30

When the original VICTORIA Magazine used to be sold, I was always impressed with it's contents. Therefore, ever since the magazine went out-of-print I've been searching for similar magazines or books.

Well, this book is even better than the magazine used to be (if that could even be possible) because it is packed with so many ideas regarding "decorating in a romantic fashion".

So if you loved VICTORIA Magazine, then you will love this book as much,if not more.

PS: I just heard that they will be re-issuing VICTORIA Magazine soon (in 2008) . If the rumor is true, then I'll be subscribing!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring photos, Beautiful Descriptions.......2004-02-19

I have this book to thank for my beautiful, calming bedroom. But, the photos are so beautiful that I'd have bought it even without plans to redecorate. Victoria magazine fans will love getting much more of the same. Others will be happily surprised to see literary quotes and antique accents side by side with comfy couches and livable linens.

5 out of 5 stars Victoria, Exquisite , Breathtaking, Inspiring.......2002-03-01

Exactly what I was looking for! Creating a Private World is filled with beautiful pictures of cream colored fabrics and walls, lacy windows, draped bedspreads and delicately set tables.

The color ideas can leave you calm and soothed, passionate, nostaglic, or inspired. I originally planned to sit down with a cup of tea and look through each page- but no- I started bursting with thought, looking through my fabric collection and searching for new ways to decorate each room. Needless to say my tea was cold but my mind was soaring.

Obtaining this look is not something you run out on a shopping spree and purchase everything all at once. It takes time and carefully selected pieces to blend together beautifully.

Creating a Private World is a fantastic beginning. This way you can see what styles you like and what would work with the spaces you have. It' s also a very nice read and to thumb through at the end of the day.

I purchased this as a treat for myself, along with Victoria's Romantic Country Style, and Victoria's The Charms of Tea.

A little at a time I'll create my own Private, Intimate home.

A beautiful gift for a friend or loved one~ or yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Victoria: Intimate Home.......2000-02-06

This book comes from a beautiful series. Each book is wonderfully produced with gorgeous photos, high quality paper, and pretty end-papers (haven't seen any of those for a while).

Each photo is someone's way of creating their own private space - or a space that intimately reflects their personal interests. The text on that page, tells about the person, sometimes telling the evolution of that private space.

Sometimes it is just a corner, or a desktop - but a reminder that we need places that belong to us alone.

Beautiful ways to do our just Being. Remembering just Being is an art form.

Many samples for non-mainstream sites. A lot of these interestingly designed web sites have bad UI though.
