Book Description
The sequel to Nop's Trials, about a woman and her remarkable border collie
Customer Reviews:
Excellent writing.......2007-03-09
Donald McCaig is an excellent writer. He just contributed a new introduction to "Adam's Task: Calling Animals by Name," by Vicki Hearne. The whole book is worth reading, but the intro is the icing on the cake. If you are an animal trainer, an animal lover, or just a Donald McCaig fan, it's definitely worth checking out.
Couldn't put it down........2007-02-12
This is a must read but an emotional ride. Be prepared. A fine and exhausting story. I was up all night with it and loved it. Not a dissapointment. You become so tied to this dog that you can't put the book down.
Very engaging and throroughly enjoyable.
A Book for Border Collie Lovers.......2006-10-30
I purchased and read this book because my wife and I have a 2 year old border collie that we have raised from practically birth. We do not work her in herding events or agility at this time, but understand what her breed is all about. Due to this, I struggled to identify with the show events in the book, but really enjoyed the story of the bond between pet and person. Some of the story was a bit cheesy to me, but I felt overall the book was very worth reading and provided much insight into the bond with border collies and the show curcuit. I also enjoy how this book lets the dog have a voice of sorts in the book. I would recommend this book for dog lovers and especially border collie lovers such as myself.
Get Hooked on Border Collies and Sheepherding Trials.......2004-10-15
Mr. McCaig's writing evokes the hardscrabble lot of the book's characters, human and canine, and it grips the reader's attention until the end.
Through descriptions of farm life and sheepherding trials, the author traverses excruciating pain, redeemed finally by the love a man has for his daughter and her Border Collie.
Mr. McCaig thoroughly understands Border Collies, sheepherding trials, and people. He is personally active in the sheepherd trial community; his experience imbues his story with realism.
More trials, more hope for Penny.......2003-04-25
I found this book very touching. I felt an enormous sense of compassion for Penny and understood her frantic efforts to escape from her overwhelming grief. Although her choices seemed very foreign to me, I felt that I could empathize with her. She often seemed blind to others and their needs, and their efforts to help her, because her own hurts were so enormous. But, her wonderful dog, Hope, was marvelous and, like dogs tend to be, nonjudgemental. Penny's mistakes were realistic, and I think she finally learned from them. The dawning of her ability to move on and begin a new life at the end of the book was sensitively done in the author's easy-reading and unpretentious style. I found this a book for reading over and over again. It did not leave me with the disturbing images that Nop's Trials did.

Book Description
Alicia Erian, whose work has appeared in The Iowa Review, Zoetrope, and Nerve, casts aside traditional notions of right and wrong and conjures up situations that are at once familiar and unsettling. Her characters—flawed, brave, disarming, affectionate—inhabit the not-so-very-wide space between a good intention and a bad outcome. In “Alcatraz,” we meet a middle-school spelling champion who spends her afternoons taking baths with the boy next door. In “Almonds and Cherries,” a young woman turns an unexpectedly arousing bra-shopping experience into a short film, with ramifications for everyone around her. These surprising, provocative, and deeply resonant stories mark the emergence of a major new talent.

Compulsive reading!.......2007-04-18
I am not a great fan of most contemporary short stories, which tend to be literary to a fault or edgy and cynical to the point of tedium, but I picked up this collection because I loved the title and it gave me great pleasure from beginning to end. Yes, I often wanted to hit the characters over the head, but I always had to find out what happened next, and it always satisfied. The writing is clean and lively and very funny without ever losing its heart, and Erian has a remarkable talent for ending stories on the perfect note. I look forward to reading more from her.
great collection from a stirring new voice.......2004-01-06
let me start by saying that this is the only book i have ever felt compelled to review on this site, and probably will be the only one for quite some time. picking up this book was an impulse buy, as i violated two main rules in purchasing it: firstly, i don't buy authors i haven't heard of; and secondly, i shy away from women in contemporary fiction because i have gotten burned way too much in the last few years. that being said, this collection is one of the finest that i have read in my life. the protagonists are all empowered females, so the book has a feminist flair, but what is most interesting about the presentation is the decidedly anti-feminist undercurrent. erian never leaves things clear cut. when her characters makes conscious decisions that empower them, that allow them to flaunt their power and their sexuality, i found myself cringing because while these are powerful decisions, they are not exactly the right ones, and the characters know it. there is a self-destruction in the exercising of their femininity that is at once wholly new, unexpected, admirable, and tragic. erian's prose is economic and careful, and her stories taunt the reader with abrupt endings and open interpretation. she will end a story right as she leads up to a confrontation that has been building for fifteen pages, and it is here that she empowers her reader, by allowing them to take an active role in ending the story. based on what we have read, we know in our hearts how the story will end based on what we drew from the body of the prose; but our endings will all be different. erian's voice is immediate and achingly contemporary...it makes fare like the canon of oprah's book club seem inept and maudlin. this is power in storytelling. i can't wait for her upcoming novel.
new mary gaitskillesque writer.......2001-08-17
This book is definitely worth reading. The story about the girl losing her virginity absoulutely killed me. I was almost embarrassed while reading it, it felt so real, I felt as though I were intruding on a real person's privacy. For me that is a sign of really good writing. Looking forward to more by the author.
Smart, Funny and Powerful.......2001-05-17
I loved this collection of page-turning, dynamic short stories. Every character is engaging and tangible, and each one is faced with (or creates) situations that are by turns poignant, frightening, and hilarious. I found myself cringing at them, rooting for them, and seeing myself in them. The writer is psychologically smart and her storytelling is skillful; you find yourself drawn into each story with the first few sentences and hooked to the end. I strongly recommend this collection to anyone who likes a good read combined with substance and insight.
Left to their own devices..........2001-04-24
Left to their own devices the women of Alicia Arian's first collection of short stories often willfully set down the wrong path as a way to feel more alive, even if the consequences are dire. Her heroines are self absorbed, masochists but somehow we, as readers, are compelled to stick with them through the ugliness that is all too familiar. Arian delves into the shameful moments that all of us share without moral proselytizing. She engages us through her acerbic wit and an assured hand. One after the other, each of her stories is a tart treat. Damged goods never were so prized.

Not Since DUNE have I loved a strange world so much.......2006-07-10
This story is gripping, the kind of story you want more and more of. Hard to believe a world of sentient giant insects can pass on so much information about humans, nature, and philosophy. The main character Niall gets all kinds of lessons in civilian/military survival strategy, diplomacy, loyalty, tragedy, sacrifice, momentary fame, occult mystery, the machinations of power and cultural traditions, and a struggle against seemingly inevitable defeat.
There are many moments that will put a science fiction lover into remembrance of favorite scenes from Planet of the Apes, Stranger in a Strange Land, or the stories of H.G. Wells. Anyone who has spent time pondering the politics of insects in a garden will get alot out of this story. Thank you, Colin Wilson. This story is Epic!
The Imaginative Impulse.......2005-08-10
Those who know CW from his non-fiction and also enjoy sci-fantasy will be rewarded by reading this series. The narrative skill is pacy and CW incorporates his 'philosophy' without it becoming didactic. I think the series is easily his best fiction. It was apparently written as a response to Roal Dahl's suggestion that CW should write something for teenagers - a sort of Lord of the Rings which would appeal to all readers.
CW always emphasises that he is a writer of ideas and this genre is an excellent medium for such!
Book Description
This book, the most comprehensive survey of early American Christian theology ever written, encompasses scores of American theological traditions, schools of thought, and thinkers. E. Brooks Holifield examines mainstream Protestant and Catholic traditions as well as those of more marginal groups. He looks closely at the intricacies of American theology from 1636 to 1865 and considers the social and institutional settings for religious thought during this period.
The book explores a range of themes, including the strand of Christian thought that sought to demonstrate the reasonableness of Christianity, the place of American theology within the larger European setting, the social location of theology in early America, and the special importance of the Calvinist traditions in the development of American theology. Broad in scope and deep in its insights, this magisterial book acquaints us with the full chorus of voices that contributed to theological conversation in America’s early years.
Customer Reviews:
An Instant Classic.......2006-08-30
E. Brooks Holifield, though I have never met him, has been a writer-mentor ever since I read his early work, "A History of Pastoral Care in America." Holifield brings his same passionate precision to his latest book, "Theology in America." His humble title belies the depth of the book, yet at the same time communicates clearly the comprehensive task that he has undertaken. His subtitle says it all, "Christian Thought from the Age of the Puritans to the Civil War."
Holifield writes in a magesterial style, fitting for his topic. As Grant Wacker notes, it is "massively researched and elegantly crafted." The author leaves none of the proverbial stones unturned, as his control of his subject ranges from high church to low, from free white to enslaved black.
As with his study of American pastoral care, so here Holifield ably sees and shares themes and threads that others often miss. In particular, Holifield highlights the ever-existing tension between theological truth and practical relevance evident in the American theological pursuit. Thus the reader receives the big picture as well as the summary, the forest and the trees.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," and of "Soul Physicians" and "Spiritual Friends."
The quest for a reasonable faith before the age of Darwinism.......2005-09-30
Holifield's book is simply outstanding. Granted, you do need some basic grounding in theology, philosophy and church history to really get into the text. But Holifield's theme of American Christian thinkers seeking to understand the relationship between reason and faith is extremely helpful. The dawning of America is intricately tied into the rise of the Enlightenment. As American Christianity develops, the leading theologians of the church must contend with challenges raised by modern rationalist thought. From the philosophical footwork of John Locke and Thomas Reid to the limitations of Baconian reasoning in dealing with the subject of slavery in biblical interpretation, Holifield weaves a very full and engaging intellectual historical narrative. Some of Holifield's subjects, such Jonathan Edwards, are fully involved in the Enlightenment struggle, whereas others retreat from the intellectual challenges of the modern era. Nevertheless, God's Kingdom marches on in all of its amazing (and, frankly, discouraging at times) diversity in the life of the church. Holifield's history is very thought provoking, and it really gives you a hunger to learn more. It deserves another read in the future, for sure!As an observation, I find it really incredible to realize that most modern Americans have very little exposure to the thoughts that are expressed in this book. For example, Thomas Reid is a central figure but most modern historical reflections on philosophy regard him as a point on the conservative fringe. With the exception of today's conservative Reformed Calvinists, you hardly find any mention of Jonathan Edwards, except for his "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" sermon in our public education (and even Christian private education). Many thanks go to Holifield for setting the historical record straight.
A challenging but fascinating read.......2005-08-16
Theology in America is a fascinating read. Dr. Holifield illustrates the fragmentation and diverse thought of theology in antebellum America from its colonial beginnings until approximately 1850. Regarding the negative reviews, I would certainly agree that this is not light reading. However I would also absolutely disagree with the premise that the effort is not worth pursuing. For this book holds a lot of gems and like other precious jewels the discovery, while maybe a difficult undertaking, is definitely worth the effort.
One caveat should be stated: the style of writing assumes that the reader has a good understanding of church and theological history along with a basic knowledge of the popular philosophical schools of thought of the 17th and 18th centuries. Dr. Holifield writes with an erudite style with his primary academic audience in mind, therefore it is not meant for casual reading. With that notation given, the reader will have profited tremendously in their knowledge of the beginnings and maturation of American theology when they have completed the book. I certainly did. I plan on rereading it within the year to further solidify my understanding of antebellum theology.
Major step forward for American Religious History.......2005-07-19
E. Brooks Holifield at Emory University pays his Yale mentor, the late Sydney E. Ahlstrom, the supreme compliment of writing a book that takes American religious history studies miles further from Ahlstrom's landmark book of 1971. Many American religious histories are more sociological than historical, studies of histories, practices, and distinctions of religious bodies, most often mainstream Protestant. Holifield's book is pure intellectual history, extraordinarily researched and well-written. This is a dazzling achievement.
Must Read for all Serious Students of Theology.......2004-03-05
Dr. Holifield has written a masterwork of theological history. His attention to detail and his knowledge of the subject are truly stunning. By reading his analysis I was forced to reexamine and sharpen my own (reformed) beliefs.
This is a must read for any serious student of theological or church history. A successful reader should have at least a basic knowledge of the key theological terms, i.e. regeneration, justification, etc. But if you normally get your theology from the "Left Behind" books and other such tripe then don't attempt this one. If you don't know your "Ivy Tower" from an "Ivory Tower" this work is not for you.

unhurried pace, minimal jargon.......2005-09-05
Is there really a need for a computer book specifically addressed to people over 55 years old? Lowenstein thinks so, and has supplied this text, now in its third edition. I suppose this indicates that the first two editions were well received.
The first thing to note is the sparse nature of the cover. A decided contrast with most computer books these days. Perhaps the conservative, restrained nature of the cover is meant to reassure its putative audience.
The text is fine. Nothing to quarrel over its content. Unsurprisingly, Lowenstein deprecates jargon as much as possible. Maybe you too can gain something from this book. Its pace is unhurried. There is no sense of the proverbial drinking from a fire hose.

AOL proprietary?.......2001-04-12
I bought this book for my mother who is just now learning to use a computer. (she's in her 60's) I had high hopes based on the description provided. My problem is that the main area she needs help with is using email. This book only deals with AOL...not anything about Outlook Express at all. I was very disapointed to learn this. I returned the book.
More than a 5 star book.......2001-01-04
This book was written for senior citizens like me, but I can't imagine that it wouldn't help any beginner on the computer. Not only is it very informative and educational, it is written with humor. Ms. Lowenstein is a good teacher. I knew how to send and recieve e-mail messages and I knew how to play some games, but I was very confused and uninformed about anything else. Now I feel like a regular kid and don't have to ask my grandchildren how to do things that they do as easily as breathing. The book makes a wonderful gift, too.
Sure to give "Dummies" a run for their money.......2000-11-19
This instructional manual is a must have for all computer users, grandma or not. It gives simple, easy to follow instructions for the basic things most people do with their computers. The book is well organized, comprehensive and not the slightest bit threatening to the novice user.
In addition to the basics, there are sections dealing with word processing, graphics and downloading files. It should be on every emailer's desktop. As a computer consultant, I train people to use their computers. I bought copies for my husband, his father and my two best friends.
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL!.......2000-11-17
As a dean at a California community college, I've had the opportunity to review many introductory computer books. "For Grandmas Who Do Windows" is an excellent tutorial with a cookbook feel to it that will teach even the Luddites among us the basics of using computers. The section on Toolbars is one of the easiest to understand that I've ever read. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who has not yet joined the computer revolution.
For Grandmas (and Grandpas) Who Do Windows.......2000-10-24
I am a Grandma who does "windows" and a lucky Grandma to now own a copy of Amy Lowentein's latest book. As a senior citizen I had a late start into this new computer age. It seems that every time I sit down at my computer, a new problem arises and I find myself saying, "If only I knew how to do this." Well, now I know how--merely by looking up the correct method in this wonderful how-to manual. It is easy to follow and understand, concise and to the point. and best of all, a fun way to learn. My congratulations and gratitude to the author.

Book Description
