Book Description

Nowhere in Africa is the extraordinary tale of a Jewish family who flees the Nazi regime in 1938 for a remote farm in Kenya. Abandoning their once-comfortable existence in Germany, Walter Redlich, his wife Jettel, and their five-year-old daughter, Regina, each deal with the harsh realities of their new life in different ways. Attorney Walter is resigned to working the farm as a caretaker; pampered Jettel resists adjustment at every turn; while the shy yet curious Regina immediately embraces the country—learning the local language and customs, and finding a friend in Owuor, the farm's cook. As the war rages on the other side of the world, the family’s relationships with their strange environment become increasingly complicated as Jettel grows more self-assured and Walter more haunted by the life they left behind. In 1946, with the war over, Regina's fondest dream comes true when her brother Max is born. Walter's decision, however, to return to his homeland to help rebuild a new Germany puts his family into turmoil again.

5 out of 5 stars Misuri Sana: The Language of Africa.......2005-09-30

This is the story of Jewish refugees from Germany coping in a foreign and magical land during WWII. It is beautifully told though the eyes of the Redlich family: Walter, a former attorney, Jettel, his beautiful and emotional wife, Regina, the precocious, intelligent and receptive child, and Owuor, their African "houseboy" or cook. With the purple Ngong hills of Kenya, the famous Norfolk hotel and the pink-flamingo-covered Lake Nakuru in the background, this autobiographical account tells a unique tale of the suffering and pain inflicted upon this family, forced into exile by the actions of the Nazi regime.

The Redlich family was lucky enough to escape their beloved homeland, but not all members of their families shared the same fate. As she tells the story of a proud family losing everything, particularly social status and an understandable language, Stefanie Zweig uses a variety of languages to describe their myriad and varying emotions. Translated into English from German, this version loses a little bit of the importance of language barrier to the tale; however, Swahili, German and even a few Latin phrases are peppered throughout and do help.

Regina, Zweig's alter ego, is the strongest and most enjoyable voice. In fact, I wished the entire story were told through her perspective, for she is the one who most captures the spirit of Kenya. This is primarily due to Regina's relationship with Owuor, and her own secret fairy, that guides her through lonely experiences at boarding school, a luxury her refugee parents can barely afford. Even though she is a child, she becomes the voice of reason for the entire family.

If you've spent any time in Kenya, this book will bring your experience back to life and make you further appreciate the distinctions of class, race and ethnic heritage. I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing survival story.......2004-06-08

I anxiously awaited the release of this English translation after I saw the movie. In comparison, there are a few differences in the plot, but the story in both is moving. My primary reason for wanting to read the book was to understand the characteres better, to hear that inner voice that does not translate well on film. The book certainly provided this, though some times I found myself frustrated with the lengthy descriptions of secondary characters, such as the Professor and Diane. Still, the chapters that do delve more closely into the hearts and minds of Regina, Walter, Jettel and Owuor do not disappoint. Overall, though the writing at times wavers between meandering and powerfully direct, the story is heartbreaking and inspiring. I look forward to the sequel.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT READ.......2007-05-13

I really enjoyed this book and the story moved fast. This is the first book that I read by this lady but I do agree with one reviewer about the pooper scooper stuff. That was a little much but I enjoyed all the other characters and the story. A really good murder mystery in the world of dance.

3 out of 5 stars One Pooper-Scooper too many.......2007-01-29

As the final confrontation came down on the floor of the dance studio, I thought: "Please, not the pooper-scooper. That is too lame." Aghhhh, it was the pooper-scooper and it was too pat a climax. I cannot count the characters in this book. I kept having to flip back to see who was who. Actually, the book was fairly interesting, but it was kind of muddled and hard to keep track of everyone in it. Quinn and Shannon were okay, but I find it hard to believe that after 8 years of not dancing comepetitively anyone could just 'waltz' onto a floor and win a competition. Could Sarah Hughes just decide to re-enter amatuer skating and with the U.S. championships without first competing in some (any) other events? Oh well, the book was okay even if confusing and kind of cliched. Not great but maybe if you're a fan of Heather Graham, this is what you like. This is the first book I've read by her and will probably be the last. It was not suspenseful enough for me, and the mystery just was not there. The first bad guy was pretty obvious. The second not so obvious, but not really that menacing either. And in the end, everybody ended up happy with nothing but expectations of future lifelong happiness. sigh. Disapointed. But that final pooper-scooper. What a let down.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book and mystery.......2006-07-16

This is book number 2 in a series and one of Heather Graham's better mystery romances. Quinn is great and can laugh at himself when he is trying to learn to dance and is truly a good big brother to Doug. Shannon, Quinn's love interest is a bit stiffer and tends to be somewhat dense at times but still is likeable. People who inhabit the dance studio are interesting, not only the instructors but also the students. While there is too much gossip and fussing among the dancers, it is still an entertaining book that I recommend.

2 out of 5 stars A little too pat.......2006-07-04

Dead on the Dance Floor tries too hard to have a wide pool of suspects to the murder. The subplot of the homeless girl, while sweet, is too convenient-- she's homeless because her stepfather was trying to molest her and her mother wouldn't defend her, not because she was a bad kid; she just happens to set up camp in the yard of a sympathetic person; she just happens to be a natural dancer loaded with talent, and the sympathetic person works at a dance studio.

But what really yanked me out of the story was the ballroom dance move called... The Pooper-Scooper.

Every time I read that phrase, all romance & grace fled my mind while picturing baggies of doggie doo.

I guess it was supposed to be humorous, but the attempt fell flat.

The Pooper-Scooper.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Romantic Suspense You Won't Want To Miss!!.......2005-05-09

A long time fan of Ms. Graham I'm always amazed by her creativity and the setting that she has chosen for this read is not only original but fun. I admit to not knowing a Samba from a rumba except that they are indeed dances that sound like a lot of fun. As a result the reader is introduced to a lifestyle that is rather popular but unfamiliar to many and the perfect setting for this fast-paced romantic suspense.

Shannon McKay runs a dance studio that has been not having the best of luck as far as it clients goes, two different woman fall dead from an overdose of drugs. Are they related or two different problems with the same sad outcome? She is warned at a dance competition "she's next." Next for what though?

Quinn O'Casey as been asked by his brother to investigate the death of dance star Lara Trudeau. He has had a personal relationship with her and doesn't think that she would kill herself. Doug knows in his brother will be able to get to the bottom of it...especially when he introduces the fact that one of Quinn's last cases may have had a connection to Lara's death. Quinn reluctantly agrees and finds himself taking dance lessons with Shannon being his teacher. He is attracted to her and doesn't know if he should act on his feelings or shelve them until he can cross her off of his list of suspects. It's a race against time before a killer strikes again. Will he be able to figure out who is killing the dancers before Shannon becomes the next victim?

This was a real fast-paced read that was entertaining and different. Although there are quiet a few secondary characters I don't think that it's so many that the reader can't keep track. Plenty of personalities is what keeps this from being too technical or bogged down. Ms. Graham is an author that always delivers and this is a read that you won't want to miss!

Las Vegas, The Mob and the Dead Pig on the Dance Floor is one heck of a peek into Old Las Vegas. After moving to Las Vegas in 2002, I was fascinated by the stories of "Old Las Vegas". This book gave me a chance to see all that I missed. There is only one thing more fascinating than Michael Broderick's book; that is having the opportunity to meet him in person. Until you get the chance to meet Mike, visit with him by reading his book.

3 out of 5 stars Review of "Chainmail" Gateways book 2 of 7.......2002-04-23

There are a great many things to be said on the subject of this book, both positive and negative. On the one hand, I am no fan of the writing of Diane Carey; in this book, as she frequently does, she tries very hard to make creative use of the language, and generally fails miserably, succeeding only in using words incorrectly. Her idea of creative description is much like that of Humpty Dumpty in Lewis Carrol; she insists that words mean whatever she intends them to mean, rather than what their actual definitions are, or even what a reasonable person would consider a plausible connotation. (She continues to insist that "sniggering" can be used when one means "niggling", for example, the third book of hers in which I've seen this usage.)

On the plus side, her strength has always been in her plot ideas and her characters, and both of those trends, too, continued in this book. Her characters are fascinating, her plot classic Trek, and the philosophical debate that made for a large part of the creative tension of the book was actually handled well and evenhandedly, and did nothing to detract from the action of the book.

On the down side again, there is the drawback that all books in this "Gateways" series will have, presumably until the last installment: they will all end on a cliffhanger, rather than being self-contained stories.

So it's a difficult call: If you don't mind a book with no familiar Star Trek characters (that is, characters from any of the TV series), don't mind a cliffhanger ending, and can tolerate the author's misuse of the language, this book has a good plot and fascinating characters. But if any of those caveats would put you off, by all means, avoid this book.

          5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......2002-01-09

THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL. DIANE CAREY REALLY DID A GREAT JOB HERE. (BUT WITH HER, CAN WE EXPECT ANYTHING LESS?) THE CHARACTERS ARE FLESHED OUT WONDERFULLY, THE WRITING IS QUICK AND SHARP, AND THE NEW ALIENS FEATURED HERE (THE LIVING) ARE PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST ALIEN OF ALIEN SPECIES EVER TO BE INTRODUCED INTO THE VAST STAR TREK HISTORY. THIS BOOK IS A REAL GEM THAT WILL LEAVE YOU WANTING MORE! HURRY UP, DIANE! I WANT MORE BOOKS ABOUT THE CREW OF THE 'CHALLENGER'!

2 out of 5 stars Not very good.......2002-01-03

This novel like many people have said here is pretty confusing at times and you really have to pay attention. I thought there was a good 100 pages there they could have cut out. The part where they are on the grave ship was a little repetitive and the way Carey constantantly reminds us that Nick Keller is the "cowboy" in this sector could have been cut down. I found most of the characters interesting such as the first officer. The Zoa character to me was totally unrealisitc, on any other ship she would have been long gone.
Another aspect that was annoying was the characters acted at times people from this era and not people from the future. Specifically the way they speak, the lingo they use is straight from the 20th century. A little is o.k. but not constantly. Not even the people from the TV series Enterprise act like this even though they are much closer to us in time.
Many people have stated it and needs repeating there are moments that the novel achieves clarity and that is when it is at it's best. the cliffhanger in particular is very good better than the one in book one in my opinion. The sad part of this book is there is a good story in there dying to come out but better editing might have helped.

5 out of 5 stars The most amazing Trek book I have read in quite a long time!.......2001-11-27

I found myself unable to stop reading and going back to my room again and again to see wht would happen next. I wasnt the biggest fan of New Earth, but keller made quite an impression on me in the Challenger book. Here, theres no hand holding and no easy reading. any eye closers and bored folks need not apply, this is teh most challenging and unexpected story format In some time. Even though I love NEW FRONTIER, its not quite this challenge filled.

I am amazed I liked this so much, because I see so clearly in my head Bones and Data when they speak in the easy, familiar books I have read, and this is all new stuff, and like algebra instead of multiplication.

I have read every single pocket books star trek novel of every series, so I know of what i speak.

Out of the 4 or 5 hundred novels to date, this easily makes the top 50, and just might be in the top 25.

Bring on more Keller, Diane! You got all the magic!

          4 out of 5 stars Saddle up, let's ride!.......2001-10-31

I went right to this book from Book Six of the "New Earth" series, because I couldn't wait to read more about OTC Nick Keller and the *Challenger.* This story did not disappoint me, though there were moments I had trouble getting my head around. The aliens from the other side of the Gateway were introduced rather abruptly, so it was tough reading for a while. But I stuck with it, and it was well worth it. This story has substance and purpose, and it reads like a breeze (well, sometimes a breeze through a stable, but a breeze nonetheless). You can't beat Diane Carey's writing style, and with this one she's pulled off some mighty good ones.

Don't know exactly what it is about Keller, Savannah, Zane, Zoa, and Shucorion, but I'm connecting better with this crowd than I did the New Frontier crew. Sorry, Peter!

The only disappointment for me, I guess, was that the ending made me think I should be reading the "Gateways" series in order rather than skipping around. No matter, I'm still skipping around. If it looks like I'm missing something by doing that, oh well. Won't be the first time.

Two warnings: 1) Anyone still hunting for familiar Trek characters (or even familiar Belle Terre characters) will not find them in this book. On the other hand, if you loved Keller & Crew in Book Six of the "New Earth" series and are looking for more adventures from them, this is definitely the one to read. 2) This apparently ain't the last we'll be hearing of *Challenger.* And to that I say yee-haw!

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finding God in a Jewish religious and perhaps not Jewish religious way.......2007-02-21

This book is a very clear exposition of various Jewish approaches to God.
It is written in a very understandable way, and provides basic principles rather than detailed commentary. It has chapters on 'God in the Bible' ' God in Rabbinic Literature' ' Philo's Spiritual Monotheism' 'The Neo- Aristotelianism of Maimonedes' ' The Pantheism of Spinoza' 'The Philosphy of Dialogue of Buber' 'The Limited Theism of Milton Steinberg' ' The Religious Naturalism of Kaplan' ' The Humanism of Erich Fromm'.
The broadness of the authors approach will however raise certain problems for traditional Jews. i.e. The pantheism of Spinoza is ordinarily considered a denial of the basic tenet of Judaism regarding the Creator being a Personal God. The religious naturalism of Kaplan speaks of a God- Idea but also is not based on the personal God concept. It is questionable whether the Humanism of Fromm is truly a religious approach.
This said there is no doubt that this work outlines in an accurate way all the positions included.

4 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Meaningful Approaches To Age-Old Questions........2003-10-23

Questions about God have probably existed for as long as mankind has existed. Who is God? What is God? Does God exist? How does he fit into our lives? The authors of the newly revised "Finding God: Selected Responses," Rifat Sonsino and Daniel B. Syme, objectively present a variety of approaches to the profound questions about the divine being we call God. This very readable book offers a historical review of how theologians and philosophers have viewed God, over a period of thousands of years, without pushing a single approach, or suggesting that the reader believe anything at all. This is a wonderful resource book that I originally read for a class and have reread, and passed along to others, since then.

Jewish scholars have debated the nature of God for millennia. This short book packs a lot into each chapter as the authors present over a dozen views of Jewish thinkers and teachers, including those who transcribed, or wrote the Bible, the great Rabbis quoted in Rabbinic literature, Philo, Maimonides, Luria, Spinoza, Buber, Steinberg, Kaplan, Fromm, Heschel, and Alvin Reines.

The authors wrote in their Introduction: "This is a book about God. More specifically, it is a book about ways in which Jews have spoken of God through four thousand years of Jewish history. This book will not attempt to tell you what to believe as a Jew. Rather, it will present a spectrum of theological options that have been explored and affirmed by great Jewish thinkers, ancient and modern." The authors take care to point out that in the Jewish tradition, there is no one "correct" way to think of God. "Finding God" offers a solid foundation to begin the exploration of the concepts of God.

Rabbi Rifat Sonsino, rabbi of Temple Beth Shalom in Needham, MA, and Rabbi Daniel B. Syme, spiritual leader of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills, MI, wrote, "If we make it possible for one Jew to reclaim his or her Jewish spiritual identity, if we help others to begin to talk about God without ambivalence or embarrassment, if we serve as a catalyst for further study of these and other Jewish thinkers, we will consider our work worthwhile." This is an extraordinary book, beautifully written, and is most worthwhile.

          Book Description

The Oxford Dictionary defines cocktail as any combination of diverse elements, especailly potent ones. Mondo Cocktail is as much about the potent elements of literature, history, sociology and business as it is about gin, scotch, vodka and rum. This is a unique, fun and informative narrative history of the cocktail.

          5 out of 5 stars Mondo Lit.......2006-07-10

Mondo Cocktail was an unexpected pleasure. I'm rather heavily invested in cocktail books, and a very small percentage of the ones in current distribution are worthy of their subject. Of those that are, I either know or have had some sort of interaction with all of their authors - at least I thought I had. I was woefully unaware of Christine Sismondo. Hers is a literary text, and that's a juxtaposition rarely found: the literary cocktail book. Like other nonfiction books of belletristic note, Mondo Cocktail draws from a wellspring of divergent citations, removed from the central (in this case) cocktail topic, and weaves them artfully into a persuasive narrative. It's both readable and sophisticated. It's also personal in that she stitches herself and her feelings about the subject into the larger tapestry, comfortably, but not self-consciously. She eschews the common stories with their predictable twists, instead opting for her own apparently depthy research. This personal approach invariably introduces elements in the writing with which I disagree, but what a fabulous time I had finding them.

4 out of 5 stars Try the Margarita!!.......2006-02-01

Best I've ever had. And I don't think the book was meant to be an academic history or anything as the other reviewers seemed to think - more of a humour book, really. I laughed. Out loud. On public transit. Read it at home if you're the easily embarassed type.

2 out of 5 stars Drink Recipes are Awful.......2006-01-01

I tend to agree with the last reviewer--the author's research is spotty at best, yet she speaks with such authority as to brook no disagreement.

It's odd that she claims to draw on and respect the history of the cocktails contained, that she positions herself as a cocktail purist, and yet her recipes are almost unfailingly modern twistings of the originals.

The worst is her martini recipe: 5 drops of vermouth! That's not a martini, it's chilled gin.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but flawed........2005-12-28

There are some really interesting tidbits in this book and I think it's a good read, most especially for some of the drink recipes (the one for Bourbon Sours is excellent). However, the author does tend to lose focus and ramble on about personal things that aren't even remotely as interesting as the non-personal anecdotes. In addition, when she refers to Allen Ginsberg as Allen Ginsburg and his famous poem as The Howl (it's just called Howl), her research talents (not to mention knowledge of things someone of her generation should be familiar with) are rather suspect. The rift between fact and error in that one example makes me seriously doubt the veracity of much of the book's other claims.

The bulk of De Carle's original text concerns matters of basic construction, selection, care, and accessories for the lathe and its uses. Additionally, this guide is an unparalleled source of information on discontinued lathes and accessories, as well as the scene today. Another unique feature is the directory of lathe, tool, and material stockists which has been completely revised for this new edition.

5 out of 5 stars Great coverage of current and older watchmaker lathes.......1999-09-03

This book is divided in two parts. The first half of the book covers the overall concepts and use of watchmaker's lathes. The second half reviews all the models that might be typically found. Not entirely encompassing list... but pretty close.

If you are considering buying a watchmaker's lathe... this is a MUST HAVE book. Also, this is highly recommended for any one who likes lathes in general.

It's obvious the author really cares about his subject. It is enjoyable to read. The diagrams are excellent.

Crazy as this sounds, the photos are very good, but actually I thought the line art of the machines (like you see in the Wall Street Journal) is more understandable than regular photos.

Originally published in 1952, it has been updated over the years in several editions. This fifth edition in 1998 incorporates much of the original material... in the areas of general concepts. Then it substantially revises the second half of the book regarding the lathes of the world that are generally found.

The book lists lots of good resources in the back -- for manufacturers, etc.

                Book Description

Women have long identified with the expressive personalities and mythical powers of the Greek goddesses. Now they can extend the goddess metaphor beyond their spiritual and romantic lives to their favorite living spaces. Goddess at Home draws from the fascinating stories of 7 Greek goddesses to provide decorating ideas and themes, from the sensual and alluring to the strong and serene. Through quotations, stories, and gorgeous photos and images, this book conveys the unique personality of each goddess and pairs her with the room or rooms in which she commonly dwells. Packed with fun and fashionable ideas, Goddess at Home shows the reader how to use symbols, forms, and rituals to create sensuous bedroom sanctuaries inspired by Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, Sensuality, and Beauty; cozy living rooms infused with the warmth of Hestia, Goddess of Hearth and Home; serene offices inspired by Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, Discernment, and Leadership; and more. Applying the legend and lore of the 7 sisters to home decorating, this unique book shows how women can express the spirit of their "goddess within" in any home space.

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Read That Encourages Women To Recreate Their Homes Passion.......2005-09-25

I was pleasently suprised with this book. Books in the past claiming to appeal to the Goddess within your home failed. This book however delivered just as stated. Reading it helped me develope a whole new outlook of my home. After reading it I began seeing rooms in a whole new light. This book not only helps a persons inner self grow but their home. My home has been transformed and is now a personal oasis instead of just a place to exsist. I recommend this book to the woman who yearns to make her home a positive, engergetic, loving personal oasis where every room explodes in song when you enter.

4 out of 5 stars Original and Inspiring.......2003-07-01

I missed the opportunity to meet the author this weekend in San Francisco. She is a respected scholar who writes like a romance novelist. I enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading the text because it reminded me of the first time I was transported by mythology...way back in eighth grade English class in San Diego.

What woman doesn't want to come out of the bath dropping clean and erotic like Aphrodite? Or to be respected for her mind reading in the library like Athena? Don't we all want our homes to exude all the sides of who we are - sensual, intelligent, outdoorsy and domestic all at the same time? The author inspires you to do that within the 'goddess' context.

Amazon (I myself am too short to be an Amazon (sigh...) should package this book as a triple threat with Nigella Lawson's How to be a Domestic Goddess, Kim Cattrall's Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm and they'll really have something for every woman.

Buy the book, place it on your coffee table, and watch how everyone is drawn to it by the glowing, irresistible cover.

                5 out of 5 stars Divine Inspiration.......2003-06-15

I ordered this book not knowing what to expect. As an interior designer in training and a priestess of The Goddess I was intrigued at Ms. Llewellyn's book concept. I read through it in about an hour. I was both shocked and pleased to find that Ms. Llewellyn's design inspirations were things I had already done in my own home without, perhaps, knowing why I did them. The images she chose to showcase goddess inspired rooms were breathtaking. I believe a great deal of research went into this project. The information she presented in reference to the Hellenic Goddesses she chose was concise and accurate. I recommend this book highly to anyone who loves interior design and Greek Goddesses.

The book deals nicely with pieces that are mostly Russian enamels, silver, or icons. Very little jewelry is in the Kremlin collection. A couple Faberge imperial eggs that are seldom discussed elsewhere, but, they are not the most superb eggs (in my opinion).
