Book Description
Will Alexander is the sheriff in a small town in southern Appalachia, and he knows that the local thug Holland Winchester has been murdered. The only thing is, the sheriff can find neither the body nor someone to attest to the killing. Simply, almost elementally told through the voices of the sheriff, a local farmer, his beautiful wife, their son, and the sheriff's deputy, One Foot in Eden signals the bellwether arrival of one the most mature and distinctive voices in southern literature.
Customer Reviews:
Just loved it...uniquely constructed.......2007-07-24
I loved the construction of the book. It was very unique (I won't describe what I am talking about because that would spoil the fun). The prose was GORGEOUS, which is amazing considering that it was in an appalachian dialect. It wasn't hard to read because of the dialect at all (don't think Tom Sawyer).
It was a gripping story... I am not sure if I like how it was told or the story itself. It was just a gem.
I was surprised the author didn't draw out the penultimate climax (won't give it away). It was so emotionally charged and the overall climax was drawn out well...but the penultimate portion of that climax was almost underplayed. Again, I won't be more specific because it would spoil it.
Don't think twice about this book...just ORDER IT!!!
My Best Read this Summer .......2007-06-18
I was within 40 pages of finishing One Foot in Eden and I was quickly drawing it to a close during my lunch break tot he point of actually sitting in my car to finish. Ah, for me, the sign of a truly good read.
There is no need to given extensive summary as the reverse of the book and the plot summary on Amazon is adequate; instead I want to say that this is not only a great example of Southern Literature but a model of powerful fiction in general.
It is very obvious from reading this book that Ron Rash is a poet. He has powerful imagery running throughout this Southern gothic, mystery etc story told from the viewpoints 5 different characters.
If there was any detraction I would pay to the novel it is the following two (which is why I didn't give this really great read 5 stars): 1-the novel starts a bit slowly and I think it is because the vernacular seems a little forced in the beginning but settles in once we get to the 2nd speaker 2-the novel almost has two endings. The 4th speaker's section has an amazing ending that left me thinking but I understand why the 5th speaker was brought in to close out some other pieces of the story.
I highly recommend this for summer (or anytime).
Beautifully written book........2007-04-20
Ron Rash has proven his measure as a writer in his first novel, One Foot in Eden. This book is beautifully written. The vernacular takes the reader right into each scene. The characters of the Sheriff, Amy, and Billy were individually drawn and believable. Motives were understandable. I was pulled into the story of their lives that covered the first three-fourths of the book. The last fourth fell off just a bit, and is the reason this book is receiving a rating of four stars instead of five. I was disappointed with the outcome. I thought maybe that I had read it too fast and missed something, so reread it. No, the ending, especially the last ten pages of the son's story, seemed hurried and the impact was lessened because of it. The final chapter, the Deputy, also lacked the impact I think the author was trying to convey. Was the author trying to paint the universality of superstition in that culture? Because I didn't feel she deserved it. But even with the ending not going the way I wanted it to go, I loved this book. I devoured it, and I'll pass it on to my friends. Great book, overall.
Appalachian mystery.......2007-01-06
Ron Rash introduces strangers to the world of Appalachia and also sheds new light for those who know it well. His use of symbolism creates
a rich environment for a murder mystery. Well-drawn characters. Highly recommended!
Completely captivating!!!.......2006-11-20
I love this book, Ron Rash captures an element of storytelling few can accomplish. I Love this book and Highly rexommend it to anyone who enjoys a great story that will linger in your imagination.

Book Description
Connie Brockway sweeps readers back to the rough beauty of Regency-era Scotland and into the scintillating, passionate, and surprising love story of a mysterious Highlander and the woman he is pledged to protect.
Desperate to keep her two sisters and herself from the poorhouse, Kate Nash Blackburn embarks upon a journey to northern Scotland, where she hopes to gain the gratitude and patronage of a wealthy marquis. When fate maroons her at a tavern full of ruffians, a brawny Highland soldier comes to her rescue. It's Kit MacNeill, the man whose pledge to her family has haunted her for years. When he offers to escort Kate through the treacherous Highlands to Castle Parnell, she accepts even though her instincts warn her against trusting this rough and dangerous man. But soon Kate is startled by the Highlander's cultured speech and courtly manners. Who is this man of contradictions, shaped by a shadowy past, who fiercely wards off an attempt on her life, whose broad shoulders beckon her touch, and in whose arms she comes fully alive?
Customer Reviews:
Really enjoyable.......2006-07-24
Connie Brockway is one of my favorite romance novelists. Her style of writing is so easy to read & it really hooks me in. I love the premise of the dad dying to save the life of these 4 orphans, who in turn are honor bound to save the father's family later in life. To me a very interesting read. I will be searching out the rest of the series.
Decent Novel.......2006-02-13
The story did have some holes, and I'm hoping that these holes are filled in the next two books, which is why I'm willing to give it a second and third shot. I kept having to go back and reread passages, because things just didn't quite add up to me. One thing that I believe was ingenious about the book, is that, although the guy 'gets the girl', the spy mystery is not solved at the end, almost forcing you to buy the next two in the series. I have to know what happens! I've been reading a lot of books of this type lately where there is only one SCENE (if you know what I mean) and I found it completely frustrating that Kate was so afraid of Kit at first. And when Kit was first introduced in the beginning of the book, Ms. Brockway's description of a man with hair too long made me think of a balding red head with a mullet. I couldn't get the image out of my head the entire book, lo I tried. The only saving grace for Kit was his green eyes. The man is covered in scars. I'm all for a manly man, but I don't really want to dream about someone who seems bald and disfigured...but he has a very strong sense of loyalty and honor, which I found extremely attractive. By the way, I think that the betrayer is the 'dead' Douglas. I suppose I shall see when I read the next two...
Pleasing read.......2004-09-28
Connie Brockway is an author alot of readers admire for her wit, her sparkling dialogue, her intricately drawn characters and breadth of premises and settings. Barring the rest of my review of this book, the only thing that I was really disappointed with was the time period. While it was set in 1801, I felt as though this book should or could have been set in the 18th century and done just as nicely, or even better.
The pacing in this book was a trifle shaky. The first two-thirds were achingly slow and intense with emotion, and the last third was fast, anxious and climactic. Because of the slowness of the first two-thirds, it took me a week to complete it. Kate and Kit were vividly drawn characters and the scenery was masterfully drawn, but the flashbacks were awkward and Kit's physical appearance was remarked upon much too often. The presence of a monastary in Scotland seemed possible, and so I allowed that possible historical oops to pass me by.
After the only love scene--which was intense and emotional, though a bit anticlimatic, seeing as how it was so late in the book--the pace quickened at an alarming degree. The villain of the trilogy was hastily introduced and Kate's destination was thrust to the forefront. I do commend Ms. Brockway for her skill in not allowing us to fully know whether Kate would choose Kit or the Marquess, but it soon became a given when the villain began his villany.
Because of the awkward pacing and sometimes spotty plotting; this was an average read for me. But if you are looking for an intense, emotional read with a heroine who isn't a martyr and a hero who has real pain, this is a nice book.
I can hardly wait for MY PLEASURE.......2004-08-14
I want a great romance in my romance novels. But I also want a great story with interesting twists and turns and a colorful settting. That's why this book worked so well for me. I loved Kit and Kate and I thought the northern Scottish setting was very gothic and appealing. I felt like I was on the moors being chased by an evil presence. Now I can hardly wait for the next book because the teaser excerpt on Miss Brockway's site makes it sound like it is set in regency London --another of my favorite settings!
A real treat for lovers of heart-pounding romance.......2004-06-21
I am a fan of the larger than life romances where the hero wants the heroine so badly you can taste it but circumstances make it impossible for them so he just suffers in silence until he (okay, me, too!) can't take it any more. It is particularly satisfying when there are REAL GOOD REASONS why the hero and heroine can't be together. In MY SEDUCTION, Connie Brockway hits one out of the park.
On paper Kit McNeill (okay, dumb name)and Katherine Blackburn do not work. He's a seasoned soldier, a former spy, and a Scottish bastard. She's a proper English lady who has lost everything and the reasons she's lost everything have a lot to do with Kit and his past. She doesn't want to fall in love with Kit. She wants her former lifestyle back and she's on her way to northern Scotland to try and put her life back into order when she is stranded at a inn with a bunch of cutthroats and ruffians. Kit McNeill magically :) appears to save her.
Connie Brockway never makes a mistake with Kate's personality. She isn't some self-sacrificing little victim who is willing to put up with a really grim life when she has an option. She's been looking for that option ever since her father's death puts her and her sisters in the poorhouse. Kit doesn't have anything and doesn't want anything except a chance to find out who betrayed him and his closet friends when they were spies in France. His sense of obligation to Kate (for being partially responsible for her current predicament) stands in the way of his looking for this person. Kit is honorable but dangerous. A perfect combination for a hero.
While they don't work on paper, Kate and Kit work emotionally. And how! You can feel the connection between them and their yearning is heart-wrenching while they try to stick to their courses and deny what their emotions (and libidos) tell them to do. When they finally come together-- oh mama! And yet they are still torn apart. The final scene is over the top romantic and simply wonderful. I cried.
Great book and two more to come! yeah!

Book Description
Fred Saberhagen continues his Berserker Seriesreg;, a chronicle of a war between humanity and the terrifying race of sentient machines bent on death and destruction. Pilot Harry Silver's name is know throughout the galaxy. While he has defeated his share of Berserkers, he has also stolen a powerful weapon from the Space Force, making him a fugitive from the life he once knew. Looking for an adventure Harry agrees to bring a passenger aboard his ship: Lily, a woman who is on a quest to retrieve her husband. It won't be easy, as Lily's husband has joined a secretive religious cult on Maracanda, an almost-planet lodged between a shifting black hole and a neutron star. While the landscape of Maracanda is treacherous, so too, may be the people around Harry Silver. For as the search for Lily's husband deepens, Harry finds himself investigating a larger mystery and looking for missing persons, almost ending up one himself. And, as always, there is the threat of death from above, in the path of a machine whose only intent is to kill.
Customer Reviews:
Very full of surprises.......2005-02-24
This is the first berserker novel I have read in several years. I found it quite entertaining, largely for the quite extraordinary stellar system, which consists of a black hole, a neutron star "pulsar," and a "habitable body" called Maracanda. This place is NOT a planet, as several characters keep repeating almost as a mantra.
The concept -- for the sake of entertainment at least -- is that the gravitational distortions of massive objects in a tight orbit have created weirdness on the habitable portion of Maracanda. Traveling around or adventuring on Maracanda is quite an experience of time and space dilation.
The characterization is not very deep for the most part, although the protagonist Harry came to life pretty well for me. He is part rogue and part "the last honest man." There's a kind of love linkage in the character of Lily, although the author never really has time or room to build this into too much. Really, Harry's first love is his intelligent ship, the Witch. The ship is actually a better developed character than some of the characters.
As a very "fun read," I give this book pretty good marks. As for quality, I think the author succeeded in creating an imaginary place that is -- ta ta! -- ORIGINAL and that keeps you guessing.
The berserkers are a fun concept -- a bit like the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica or the "replicators" in SG-1. In short, legion of self-replicating robots with the gone-wrong mission imperative of exterminating all life. These are not original, but they make pretty good -- and scary -- villains. Because in the war with the berserkers, it appears mankind is LOSING . . .
If you want a fun read that keeps you turning pages, and some very original ideas spun off of Einstein's relativity and astrophysics -- I think you will like this. It is not "War and Peace" but it is fun -- and good of its kind.
Tedious and meandering.......2004-11-16
Years ago, Saberhagen published a series of short stories on berserkers which collectively became classics. Since then, his productivity on this idea has slowed. But he recently released this book.
Sadly disappointing compared to his earlier work. Part of the reason may have been that his short stories intrinsically had to have tighter focus. Here, the plot meanders over a zany unearthly landscape. Perhaps Saberhagen was trying to show his ability in fashioning a truly bizarre arena. But it was hard to identify with any of the characters.
Though the main character shows some potential. Akin to the Stainless Steel Rat, Slippy Jim diGriz, in Harry Harrison's novels.
More to the point, people who read Berserker novels want to see descriptions of actions against the Berserkers. Not the tedious shilly shallying of this book.
Saberhagen is capable of far better than this sloppy rendition.
Not the best in the Berserker series.......2004-11-16
Fred Saberhagen is widely acknowledged as one of science fiction's foremost masters of military science fiction, especially with his acclaimed "Berserker" series. However, "Berserker's Star" is the worst installment I have seen so far, coming across as a poorly written "Star Trek" novel, than another exciting tome in Saberhagen's series. His two protagonists, Harry, the irascible merchant ship captain, and Lily, his passenger, didn't garner much enthusiasm or interest in either character from me. If you are a fan of Saberhagen's work, I would recommend skipping this novel and reading instead, his earlier, critically acclaimed works.
Maracanda was a dangerous place..........2004-04-02
An almost-planet, trapped between a black hole and a neutron star, this is the last place youi would think Harry
Silver would end up at. But being on the run from the Space Force makes for an interesting life and, as he is always looking for more adventure, he agrees to take some passengers to this world.
Little did he know he would have to deal with the Space Force, drug smugglers, missing persons and, of course, berserkers.
366 pages, very focused, much better than the last few Berserker books. Still, I would of liked more berserkers.
Saberhagen Coasting.......2003-10-03
Berserker's Star reads like a first draft and is badly in need of some editing. The plot drags through the first half of the book, and, even when it does pick up, it is convoluted and confused. The characters are not well-developed, and are, on the whole, rather uninteresting. Kul is an exception, but still he gets tedious. With only a brief role, General Pike may have been the best of the bunch. I grew all too tired of them. The story line is interesting, but hardly sufficient to hold this together. Still, I think that there is a great book in here that is fighting to get out, probably at about half the length. I read many of the books in this series years ago, and my recollection is that they were well-paced. It appears that established authors, like Saberhagen, don't feel compelled to really put in the kind of work necessary to create polished jewels, but are content with producing only rough cut stones, and coast on their name. Saberhagen has followed in the footsteps of Roger Zelazny and Tony Hillerman, to name a couple, who have failed to maintain the same level of storytelling as they had in their early works.
Book Description
Contemporary theology, argues Miller, is silent on what is unquestionably one of the most important cultural issues it faces: consumerism or "consumer culture." While there is no shortage of expressions of concern about the corrosive effects of consumerism from the standpoint of economic justice or environmental ethics, there is a surprising paucity of theoretically sophisticated works on the topic, for consumerism, argues Miller, is not just about behavioral "excesses"; rather, it is a pervasive worldview that affects our construction as persons-what motivates us, how we relate to others, to culture, and to religion. Consuming Religion surveys almost a century of scholarly literature on consumerism and the commodification of culture and charts the ways in which religious belief and practice have been transformed by the dominant consumer culture of the West. It demonstrates the significance of this seismic cultural shift for theological method, doctrine, belief, community, and theological anthropology. Like more popular texts, the book takes a critical stand against the deleterious effects of consumerism. However, its analytical complexity provides the basis for developing more sophisticated tactics for addressing these problems.
Customer Reviews:
Essential Reading.......2004-07-03
This is a superb book. Whether you are a person of Christian faith, or faith of another tradition, or simply someone interested in religion, this book will help you to think more deeply about spirituality and the life of the faith community in the throes of our culture of commodification. Miller employs critical theory, cultural analysis, anthropology, and sociology to awaken us to the manner in which consumer culture socializes us into habits of interpretation and use that render religion itself one more consumer object to be desired, acquired, and disposed of. Readers not schooled in thinkers like Foucault, DeBord, and de Certeau may find some of the theoretical sections of the book difficult, but Miller's command of critical theory is matched by his ability to vividly describe existence in consumer society, and this brings the theoretical portions of the book to life. Readers will find themselves standing with Miller in a supermarket aisle contemplating a horizon of glossy packaging, wading through a child's room overpopulated with stuffed animals, watching Pope John Paul II become a media celebrity on television, and wondering what impact Disney is having on our children. Miller identifies dynamics of our culture that are profound and pervasive-but seldom analyzed in the religious and theological communities. He has done a great service by bringing the dynamics of commodification to our attention, and, in the final chapter, he suggests a variety of ways in which faith communities can counter its pervasive influence. His intention is constructive, and his contribution essential to the living of an authentic faith in our times.

Customer Reviews:
Basic and not so fabulous.......2007-01-10
Unfortunately, the patterns make boxy garments without much shaping. While errors, as noted by an earlier reviewer, are problems, omissions make the book deficient, and a novice would have difficulty. The book offers interesting ideas, but I found making adjustments to the instructions was the only way to get good results.
Great Book.......2006-08-08
This book is full of great patterns for Barbie. It also really made me laugh. I am not a Barbie collector or enthusiest. I just got it to knit my daughter some pretty Barbie clothes. Each outfit has a description for it as if it were a very exspensive designer piece being bought out of a catalog. I read the whole book as a work of fiction and as a good pattern book.
Knit versus crochet........2006-08-06
I prefer the Crochet For Barbie book. Keep mindful that Barbie bodies thru the years do require slight attire fit-adjustments. Still, pattern errors in this Knit book caused me to wonder if Nicky's book success (she is Barbie's authorized needlecraft fashion maker) caused publr/mfr to seek quick profits without testing their knit-to-crochet pattern translation software. Admittedly, the fashions are all great and it is nice to finish a chic project in an eye-blink. Needlecrafters will appreciate Crochet/Knit For Barbie books patterns working up pro-style, also quickly teaching beginners cro-knit skills for human attire and accys. Experienced needlecrafters' detail modifications can result in gorgeous outfit variations. Learning your yarn-usage with their common needle sizes makes catching errors nearly automatic (mine is .5"/k and .25"/sc for sport yarn and cotton no. 5 respectively).
Little girls will want you to make everything in this book.......2006-01-22
Sweaters, afghans, swimsuits, rugs, even a dog sweater. Nicky Epstein gives you a pattern for nearly anything you might want to knit for a Barbie. Well photographed pictures are followed by clear instructions for creating the items. Some of the recommended yarns are rather exotic, but an experienced knitter may be able to substitute from yarns left over from other projects. This would be a good book to have on hand if you are a knitting Mom, Grandma or doting Auntie.
Knits for Barbie.......2005-07-21
If you like to knit and love Barbie, you can create some great little outfits with this book. Instructions are clear and the pictures are great

Knitted Teddy Bears.......2007-05-13
Thanks so much for your quick shipment of this book. All 25 designs for these bears are so adorable. Debbie Bliss has a real winner with this book!!
takes some thought.......2007-01-17
I agree that the pictures and designs in this book are very cute and appealing. I also agree however that the designer could clarify the patterns a bit. It would help if the patterns included row numbers or stitch counts. But for the most part, the instructions are easy enough to follow. I would not recommend it for novices, but someone with a bit of experience should not have trouble...just read ahead a bit and keep track of your rows yourself on a separate piece of paper
Very nice toy book.......2006-12-19
I really like this book, actually. I only made one teddy bear (the one in the bunny suit), but the directions were quite clear, and I had no trouble with it. And the bear came out very cute, I thought! Just like the picture.
There are lots of adorable teddies. The best part about them is the detailed wardrobes most of them wear. Alot of the clothes are also interchangeable, so you can knit one teddy bear with several outfits -- a great gift for a little kid! The outfits are mostly old-fashined-looking, and quite charming. There are also a couple of decorative teddies with flowers embroidered on them. I'm not crazy about those, myself, but someone else might be.
I also like the way this book is organized -- the pictures of all the bears are on the first pages of the book, followed by the actual directions for making them in the later section. Each picture is referenced with the page number the directions are on.
The thing to look out for in this book is, the pieces are very fiddly. The author has you casting off and on all in the same piece. Of course, as a result, there is LOTS of seaming. I think there are easier ways to achieve the same shaping. Some of the pieces seem weird, but it wasn't too difficult to figure out how they were supposed to fit together.
Overall, a very nice toy knitting book.
too cute.......2006-03-10
I am giving this four stars because I haven't made any of the bears yet. However the pictures are too cute for words and I can't wait to make one. I rarely have problems with Debbie Bliss patterns and do not anticipate problems with these.
not much variety.......2005-08-28
The instructions are clear enough, however I was hoping for more size varieties, 4" - 20". I am still looking for a tiny knitted bear pattern.
I also deducted points for the author's insistance on one yarn, which not everyone has ability to obtain. I think an improvemnet would be using generic terms for yarns, baby weight, sport weight, 4 ply, that sort of thing.
I hope that these tiny complaints will not stop others from trying this author's patterns. The one I am doing now is going together well and it is very very easy to do.

Great Book Great Bears .......2006-01-20
This book has the most beautiful patterns. The bears are adorable and fairly easy to put together. These make great gift for showers and birthdays. They truely are heirloom peices.
A really practical book........2005-12-06
I was given this book last Christmas, and I'm slowly working my way through all the patterns. The instructions are straightforward and practical, and the bears are easy to make and don't take a long time; they all turn out beautfully. You can make them with or without clothes - the clothes take a little bit of time and can be a bit fiddly, but the bears look fine just dressed with a ribbon. There are big and small bears, and many of them can be made up from odds and ends of wool left over from other projects. For a particular project eg. one of the larger bears, I'll buy wool specially. They make great presents, and this book would make an excellent gift for anyone that likes knitting, even those I'd say without too much experience. One of the best Christmas presents I've had for a long time!

Customer Reviews:
One size does not fit all bears.......2003-02-28
Yes, the patterns are very appealing. But they are all for a 13 1/2-inch bear, with a few thrown in for a 9-inch bear. If you happen to have a 15-inch bear, or an 18-inch bear, or any other standard size, you are going to have to adjust every pattern you want to knit for your bear. And since the patterns all are written for one specific brand of yarn, with little indication of the weights of the yarns used in the patterns, you will also have to figure out from the gauges given what yarns you can use with these patterns. None of this makes for a quick or simple start to a knitting project.
Postscript: the first project I began had errors in the diagrams for the Aran cables. You'll have to correct instructions, too.
Customer Reviews:
Too few websites represented.......2007-04-02
I found the book is very little in presenting what websites work, and why!
great examples of good design.......2004-08-11
This is an excellent book with great examples of good design. It is filled with screenshots, and it has a lot of detail regarding why the site was made the way it was, inspiration, etc. Logo Design That Works was also a great book by the same author.
No bad reviews here!.......2003-01-17
This book is filled with about two dozen examples of web design; some are indeed excellent designs nicely illustrated and briefly annotated. Not a lot of text to bog you down; lots of pretty pictures to give you ideas. However, you may not agree with all the things that "work," such as sites that require a specific window size or sites with busy/loud layouts. But whether you agree or not with all the author's comments, the book makes for a good idea reference. Plus, since many of the featured sites no longer exist, this book is one of the few ways to see some great designs that are no longer around.
Solid overview of some of the best in web design.......2002-05-18
If you're looking for inspiration for your website, or to see where your skills stack up, this is an excellent book of case studies in web design.
It shows how the designs enhance the functional aspects of the sites and shows a site-wide view of how the visuals are implemented.
Not much in the way of instruction, but more of a 'learn by example' kind of book.
A must have title!.......2002-01-08
This book is a welcome addition to any designer's library. It's clear, smart and well written. I recommend this to not only creatives working on the web, but to all designers in general. Lisa's previous book, "Design for Interaction" was indispensable. "Web Design That Works" is a great companion.
