Erickson is a mad genius........2007-04-04
Just finished Our Ecstatic Days, and it has my head spinning. The separate narratives, the fact that he even has a page-to-page trailing, separate narrative interrupting the main text, the fact that he makes them actually, coherently MEET UP?!
I loved the ride, Mr. Erickson. Saw and heard you read from this one in Berkeley and finally had the chance to sit down and read it.
The Room of Lost Creativity.......2006-09-12
Having read all of Erickson's novels, I would rate this one somewhere in the middle. Having said that, I still think he is the best contemporary author we have. With the exception of the brilliant segment of the Rooms of Lost something or others, I felt this book was a rehash of his past works. But I honestly did not see how he could improve on "The Sea came in at Midnight", so i wasn't let down. If you've never read Erickson, this book might be a good introduction, though i recommend starting with "Days Between Stations" and read them all. Thank you Steve Erickson!!!!!!!!
Sparkling imagery, powerful emotions. .......2006-07-13
Last July, while supervising my department's move into a new building on a scorching Saturday afternoon, I began reading Steve Erickson's book "The Sea Came in at Midnight". It was a luminous, hypnotic novel, full of fantastic imagery and strange logic. I thought, this is my kind of writer.
So I finally got around to reading a second book by Erickson, and it's "Our Ecstatic Days" -- which, it turns out, is kind of a sequel to the previous book, picking up more or less where that one left off. If there's a protagonist of either story, it's Kristin Blumenthal, former cult member, concubine, memory girl, and now mother of three-year-old Kierkegaard (called Kirk). Kristin, who used to be fearless to the point of recklessness, has been reduced to a sniveling mass of fear and paranoia simply by giving birth.
Kirk is a strange little child, demanding and controlling, making odd pronouncements such as "I am a Bright Light." But if the boy is strange, the events that surround him are even stranger. As Kristin and Kirk try to make a comfortable, safe life at the top of a hotel, a lake suddenly springs up in the center of Los Angeles. It grows larger and deeper by the day, swallowing up streets and buildings, inching ever closer to the Blumenthals' hotel room. Kristin, convinced that the lake wants to take Kirk from her, decides to confront the lake at its source. She and Kirk row out to the center of the lake, and she jumps in. When she resurfaces, Kirk is gone.
He has been snatched away by owls.
The delight of Erickson's writing is in stumbling around the corner to discover an unexpected turn of phrase or a fascinatingly nonsensical plot point (the color blue completely vanishes from the earth, for example). Keeping up with the plot -- such as it is -- is hard work, but this isn't the kind of story you should endeavor to understand. On the contrary, it's the kind of story you absorb, like David Mitchell's "Ghostwritten". It's almost like poetry.
That's not to say that it's perfect. Erickson returns again and again to some really awkward metaphors about motherhood and reproductive anatomy (for example, Kristin becomes a dominatrix who tells fortunes by reading the patterns of her menstrual blood in the toilet. Eew!). But as an abstract, very surreal depiction of what loss -- and the fear of loss -- feels like, Erickson mostly succeeds.
"The Sea Came in at Midnight" is a better book, and I'd urge anyone to read it before trying to read this one. But "Our Ecstatic Days" is a more than worthy follow-up, and I recommend it to the initiated or the brave.
Haunted and haunting.......2005-07-26
I had never read nor heard of Steve Erickson until Simon and Schuster asked for permission to use the lyrics for my song "Opal Moon" in his book. Before I gave permission, I requested a copy of a book so I could see what the writing was like. They sent me "Rubicon Beach" -- which I thought was strange and beautiful. Upon reading "Our Esctatic Days", I found that these two books might be companion books (in fact, one chapter is the beginning excerpt from "Rubicon Beach"), both living in the same world. I found the book compelling to read, and for those who have suffered a loss in their life, it will resonate.
Best Contemporary Fiction Writer Alive.......2005-06-25
Erickson is unparalleled in my mind as the greatest contemporary writer alive. As a voracious reader, I am in bookstores frequently. It is a rare visit where I don't check the "E" section of the fiction shelf to see if Erickson's got a new book out. The six year wait between "The Sea Came in at Midnight" and "Our Ecstatic Days" was torture.
I imagine that Erickson's books have a special appeal to those of us who like to think of ourselves as more dialed-in to the vibrations of collective memory than others, but I would be hesitant to categorize his books into a specific genre (e.g. "post-apocolyptic surrealism"). What resonates with me personally about Erickson's books in general, and this one specifically, is their ability to replicate the lucid dream state- where things are both more real and unreal than in waking life. I'm sure the themes mean different things to different people; for me, they represent the possiblities of parallel lives, which is as comforting as it is disconcerting.

Excellent ... in some ways.......2007-07-24
I was pleasantly surprised by Jo Goodman's writing style. The character development (for the protagonists, at least) was well done and unlike so many American writers the vocabulary and dialogue in BaWK was authentic and appropriate.
As I read closer to the end of story, though, my loyalty to the book began to wane. What was initially a thoughtful and engaging romance and mystery turned into a stark study in female bondage and slavery. I found myself skipping over pages because the story, still technically well-written, was just too disturbing and sad.
That said, I'm looking forward to reading Ms. Goodman' work again. I'll just check reviews first next time.
porn by any other name.......2006-12-26
If you are looking for a romance, with character development and a slow increase in mutual interest between a well crafted hero and heroine - go somewhere else. This is bondage porn. It isn't even good erotica. The sex scenes are boring and once you realize what is happening to the various female characters you just want to skip over pages looking desperately for a story.
This book should be reclassified out of the romance genre and sent to where it belongs. The bargan basement of the porn/erotica section.
Beyond a Wicked Kiss by Jo Goodman.......2006-06-07
I was completely inthralled by the first half of this book. It was my first Jo Goodman book and although it was the last in the series I didn't have any trouble following it.
I give it only 2 stars because the second half of the book was so dark and degrading to women it was repulsive. The villains were into white slavery, sadomasochism and bondage. Goodman writes very graphic scenes of these practices and the heroine was subject to them. I could have known about them without having to endure them and it would not have detracted from the story at all. She left me feeling abused.
I am still tempted to read another of her book but not until I find out if she writes this way all the time. Her imagery was wonderful. Character development was excellent.
A somewhat different romance.......2005-09-17
I've read several of Jo Goodman's books before, and checked this one out of the library to read another one. It was my first of the compass club. I was torn between strongly disliking the plot and being utterly fascinated. That being said, I was captivated until the end, and needed to know what was going to happen. The story was a quick read and I wanted to keep going until the end. Unfortunately, I finished the book, I wasn't completely satisfied with the plot, thus I gave it only 3 stars.
5 STARS PLUS! West's story is the BEST!!.......2004-09-07
I bought this book first then realized that there were three others and believed (correctly) that they should be read in order. North, South, East and West - while they occur at the same time you appreciate them all much better if read in that order. As for West and Ria - wow - this was a true love story. The pace of it and the development of their love was so real and even better than the previous three. And West himself - while not so much apart of the other books was so distinct from the others - more of a real person. Perhaps because he was not of title born, though he would find out that he had been. But he was just more of a man's man - And Ria well she was just priceless - she just did what she felt like so often and those appearances in West's bedroom in the night early on were just priceless. And the underlying story once again about the Society of Bishops was even more relative to West and Ria's story than even the other three. This was just from start to finish the best of the best. Actually the Compass Club is one of the best groupings or series that I have ever read and Jo Goodman get high marks for her writings. I would love like a previous reviewer said if she could write one more - bringing the lives of all three together as one. It would be fascinating to see how the women would interact with one another. I absolutley recommend this book and the other three!!

Item received was not as described.......2006-05-26
The item I received from Amazon is not what is described here. Despite the banner on the front of this book and in the image stating "8 pages of color photographs", the photos were very poor quality black and white photocopies. This was true for all 3 of the Babylon 5 season books that had photos. I am not even convinced that the text in any of the 5 books is not just photocopy as well. I paid full cover price and purchased directly from Amazon. After sending a complaint and asking how to get the correct item, Amazon immediately sent another set. These too were defective black and white photocopies. Although the book itself appears to be interesting, I would buy it from a book store and not purchase it unseen through Amazon.
A Great Guide to a Great Series.......2003-11-21
Babylon 5 was unique in television. The main plot for the entire series was mapped out before the show even started. As a result, it developed a loyal fan base that still loves it.
This book is the third in a series of five episode guides to the series. Covering the third season, it has a separate chapter for each of the twenty-two episodes. Each starts with a plot summary, but then goes into behind the scenes stories and commentaries. Through interviews with cast, crew, and creator J. Michael Straczynski, author Jane Killick is able to give a full picture of what went into each episode. Some of my favorite parts are the stories of bloopers or jokes the cast played on each other. I also find the summaries useful if I'm looking for a particular episode to rewatch.
Starting out the book are two essays. The first provides insight into creating the special effects for the show. While the majority of the time is spent on describing the computer graphics used (something unheard of when the series started), there is also some insight into the traditional effects and the make-up used to create the aliens. The second in an introduction to the third season, painting broad strokes of the story arcs introduced and developed over the course of the season.
Any fan will love to have this well researched book for a behind the scenes look at a wonderful piece of science fiction television history.
Essential Reading for the B5 Viewer.......2002-11-07
The Babylon 5: Season by Season guidebooks are an essential read for fans of the TV series. Containing photos, interviews, essays, and in-depth rundowns of each episode, each book is indispensable for B5 vets and newbies alike. Strongly recommended.
A great book series, but if you are new to the show..........2001-10-24
This is a really good book series for B5 fans. It makes a great companion & fun reading after you have watched each show. But I would recommend it mainly for those that have seen the series & are watching it again. The reason I say that is because it is laced with spoilers all throughout the commentaries. That's fine if you've seen the whole thing already, but it stinks if you are watching it for the first time. If you don't mind that sort of thing...go for it, but this is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. For a good "non-spoiler" companion guide, I highly recommend The Babylon File: The Definitive Unauthorized Guide to J. Michael Straczynski's TV Series Babylon 5 by Andy Lane (Versions 1 & 2). He shows no mercy sometimes. If he does or doesn't like the show, he let's you know. But it's a blast to read.
Enlightening and fun.......2000-07-31
The book starts with a description of the long road of "selling" B5 to various tv execs seeking partners and funding. Boring? On contrary it offers a rare look behind the curtains and helps to understand why it's so hard to get funding for a truly artistically ambitious tv show like Bab 5, or why most tv drama lacks that ambition. It also gives the readers an idea of how dedicated JMS, Copeland and Netter were to getting this show on air against all odds. The overall wiew on the first season On the other hand can be a bore to those who have already studied the episodes site on the net, although more compact and a must to understanding the continuing story lines that would make Macchiavelli jealous, layers on layers, from scale of individuals to institutions, worlds and the universe. For those new to this complexity and richness it makes the book easier to follow episode by episode.
The episode guide includes a two-page synopsis followed by 4-5 pages of comments from JMS, directors and actors, episode by episode including the pilot of the series, "the Gathering". If these comments would constitute a bigger part of the book instead of about 100 pages, with even more detail and humour the book would be a fiver, but as people were interwiewed years after the first season these kind of things tend to give way for more professional-orientated memories. Still by no means dry or "basic" even for the most educated fans, this book is worth it's price, and more when combined with the series on video, allowing to see the episodes in a new light.

Book Description
In Creating True Peace, Thich Nhat Hanh uses a beautiful blend of visionary insight, inspiring stories of peacemaking, and a combination of meditation practices and instruction to show us how to take Right Action. An audiobook for people of all faiths, this is a magnum opus -- a compendium of peace practices that can help anyone practice nonviolent thought and behavior, even in the midst of world upheaval.
Creating True Peace tells stories of Thich Nhat Hanh and his students practicing peace during wartime. These demonstrate that violence is an outmoded response we can no longer afford. The simple, but powerful daily actions and everyday interactions that Thich Nhat Hanh recommends can root out violence where it lives in our hearts and minds and help us discover the power to create peace at every level of life -- personal, family, neighborhood, community, state, nation, and world.
Whether dealing with extreme emotions and challenging situations or managing interpersonal and international conflicts, Thich Nhat Hanh relies on the 2,600-year-old traditional wisdom and scholarship of the Buddha, as well as other great scriptures. He teaches us to look more deeply into our thoughts and lives so that we can know what to do and what not to do to transform them into something better. With a combination or courage, sweetness, and candor, he tells us that we can make a difference; we are not helpless; we can create peace here and now.
Download Description
"Creating True Peace is both a profound work of spiritual guidance and a practical blueprint for peaceful inner change and global change. It is the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh's answer to our deep-rooted crisis of violence and our feelings of helplessness, victimization, and fear. As a world-renowned writer, scholar, spiritual leader, and Zen Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the most visible, revered activists for peace and Engaged Buddhism -- the practice he created that combines mindful living and social action. Having lived through two wars in his native Vietnam, he works to prevent conflict of all kinds -- from the internal violence of individual thoughts to interpersonal and international aggression. Now, in this new book, perhaps his most important work to date, Thich Nhat Hanh uses a beautiful blend of visionary insight, inspiring stories of peacemaking, and a combination of meditation practices and instruction to show us how to take Right Action. A book for people of all faiths, it is a magnum opus -- a compendium of peace practices that can help anyone practice nonviolent thought and behavior, even in the midst of world upheaval.

A reality Check.......2007-04-01
Creating true peace is one of those books that you can read with time. No need to hurry. The entire book radiates serenity, as do all Thich Nhat Hanh's books anyway.
I especially admire his simple ways of confronting us with our behavior, and his encouragements to evaluate the way we treat ourselves and those around us.
Mindfulness is a simple concept, yet so easy to deviate from in our daily activities. Reading this and other books from Thich Nhat Hanh helps you to refocus on the things that are really important.
A strong work for those who seek tranquility in a hectic society.
We Need Peace & Understanding........2005-05-14
Thich Nhat Hanh was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He guides the reader of this new book how to go about getting rid of the violence he holds inside. As in his book, ANGER, he tells how anger and unhappiness can consume you. Violence is an outmoded response we can no longer afford politically and in daily life with family and friends (we usually tend to lash out and hurt the people we love the most).
Walking can calm our feelings and help us recover out peace. Walk to release your anger and pain. It calms negative feelings, helps you to get in touch with positive elements within and around you. Walking outdoors increases our happiness, peace, and harmony.
He tells us that we can each make a difference by being compassionate and not overbearing toward others; we are not helpless by any means. In our community, where the bigwigs hold sway and money is everything, we need to seek peace but not accept repression. Each individual is precious in God's grace -- I hope Tristan had a peaceful transition. He was a good-looking young man.
We can all work on inner change in personal lives, but global changes are in the hands of politicians, the leaders. So many are inexperienced and unsuited to lead anybody; others are corrupt. As in the movie, 'Kingdom of Heaven,' we will have to hope that God is on our side.
Creating True Peace.......2005-03-31
The best feature of this book is the emphasis it makes on being present and mindful in a relationship, especially relationships with loved ones. It is true that authentic peace begins with the individual, and can only be present when the "ego," the "me" in all of its separatist activities is absent. I think it was misleading to suggest that both ego and peace can coexist, since the very nature of the undeveloped self is to behave in divisive fashion. Thich Nhat Hanh speaks from the Buddhist tradition, and like all spiritual traditions, it can only take one so far. A great teacher once said that an ounce of falsehood can spoil a thousand pounds of truth, and although this book is well-intentioned, I believe it is of limited value. If you have a family, then by all means, read it, but for consistent truth, I suggest reading Eckhart Tolle's, Power of Now, and/or exploring the many great works of Guy Finley and J. Krishnamurti. Once the ego has been transcended, there is no longer a need to "cultivate" anything because true peace will emanate naturally from being.
Overstates his case IMHO.......2004-12-08
I began working on the poison of anger and obtained books & a video to help, including this book, "Working with Anger" by Thubten Chodron, & the video "Good Medicine" by Pema Chodron (about Tonglen & Atisha's Lojong Slogans). I had read 1 Thich Nhat Hanh (& heard a public speech), no Thubten Chodron, but several Pema Chodron works before this. I found both Chodron's works quite helpful, but not "Creating True Peace." Later, I read TNH's book on "Anger" which seems a bit better--I must have a very different Myers-Briggs than TNH. While only a Buddha knows what people need, I don't think we should wait to put Bodhichitta into practice (e.g. Tonglen)--learn by doing and dissolve the barrier between subject & object. I disagree with p. 25: "If you do not know how to handle the anger and violence in yourself, it is impossible to help someone else."
p. 59: "We should not try to help others in an effort to escape our own sorrow, despair or inner conflict. If you are not peaceful and solid enough inside yourself, your contributions will not be useful." IMHO de-focusing one's problems by focusing one others' problems can help both; one can work on oneself & help others.
IMO, he communicates a SE Asian perspective--not readily transplantable to the West (per Jung's comments). Also, this book is full of complaints, judgments, & criticisms of the West & devalues science & progress. This seems one-sided to me. I agree that Peace is achieved through the transformation of individuals: the 100th Monkey Principle says that when a critical mass of beings embrace something, it spreads rapidly through the whole, as does Malcolm Gladwell's "Tipping Point." TNH says on p. 16: "When we hold back our feelings and ignore our pain, we are committing violence against ourselves...do not make war on our feelings or reject them, but just recognize, embrace, and transform them. When anger or fear is present in us, we bring awareness to it. We smile to it and call it by its true name." There's truth here, but not the whole truth. Buddhist psychologist Anita Barron also viewed TNH's take on anger as simplistic in Marianne Dresser's "Buddhist Women on the Edge," & Robert Moore's Warrior archetype, in "The Warrior Within," includes purposeful pain & suffering--such as Tenzin Palmo's experiences in retreat (see "Cave in the Snow" & "Reflections on a Mountain Lake"). IMHO TNH has some good points but goes too far (e.g. he appears to imply that mindfulness breathing will solve everything) & projects a limited & extreme leftist orientation. I prefer Tonglen, the middle way, & the nuns Chodron.
Socially Engaged Buddhism.......2004-03-09
To some peace and nonviolence are synonymous with frailty and submissiveness; yet not to our beloved Thich Nhat Hanh. For him, to practice peace, to make peace alive within us, is synonymous with cultivating understanding, love, and compassion - even in the face of misunderstanding and war. He reiterates that practicing peace, especially in times of war, takes above all: courage. Thich Nhat Hanh should know, for he's survived 3 wars, harassment, and more than 30 years in separation from his native homeland of Vietnam.
This book stems from his experiences as a Buddhist monk striving towards peace, who happens to have written over 100 books and is a world leader when it comes to speaking out against violence and war. The range of lives he`s touched with his message, from a variety of cultures and backgrounds, is absolutely staggering. Thay's writings always have a no-nonsense and functional characteristic to them. Many of the practices you'll find in this particular work are lessons he has sharpened in his monastic living community in France - Plum Village. He is at the forefront of "socially engaged" Buddhism, viewing meditation and social activism as being on the same ticket.
War and peace are both within us, like that cliché symbol we are familiar with from the east of the yin and the yang; a prospect he touches on in his world famous poem, "Call Me By My True Names." Those of us familiar with Nhat Hanh's works probably notice a core theme which breathes through all of his works: practicing peace not just towards all beings, but likewise with our emotions and inner struggling. In this book he does not shy away from criticizing the Unites States and it's present actions in the world, mentioning the United Nations , "each of us depends on the well-being of the entire human population." This is Thich Nhat Hanh at his very best, and it's my hope every reader will encounter this truly magnificent work.

looking for more.......2005-09-01
a sanitized justification for the experiment. While I enjoyed the insights gained, I was much more interested in the human interaction, foibles, fights and sex among the human participants. A long space voyage and colonization requires humans to interact with humans. How did they cope, little on this subject. Great experiment, to bad it is not being continued as this will be our outpost on the moon. David Doremus

Excellent reference book, good reading.......2002-11-16
This is quite the best specialist dictionary for collectors and dealers, and for translators like myself, checking that the English expression means what we hope. But there is a danger. Look up one expression and you find yourself reading several other entries as well, just for the fun of it. A most entertaining and erudite work. I know of nothing else to match it.

Book Description
From Mumbai to Chennai and from Kochi to Karachi, from the humble sign writer to the blue-chip advertising agency, the creative industries of India entice and inform a population of over one billion. In this crowded, colorful world, innovation is often born of necessity and scant resources, and can result in the very clever or the completely ridiculous. The most exciting graphic work has been singled out by the keen eye of Keith Lovegrove on his journey through India. He lovingly documents a wide range of vernacular graphics and commercial art from the personalized bodywork of vehicles to advertising hoardings; from political posters to lavish Bollywood publicity. The result is a celebration of the huge variety of graphic work that Lovegrove found in this densely populated landscape and a reflection of the religious, political and cultural diversity along his route.

Graphicswallah.......2003-08-31
Lovegrove's perceptive look at the billboards and graphics of India is a fascinating insight into the vibrant culture of the sub-continent. His written accounts of his travels in search of the posters and signs make very interesting reading. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Asia and enjoys global travel. The photographic content and layout is excellent.

Customer Reviews:
Great insight in the mastermind of a salesman.......2007-07-19
As a fan of inventors and salesmanship, Ron Popeil was at the top of his game for decades... this book demystifies some of the qualities, tenancity, and cleverness that someone needs to succeed in the world of marketing ones self and their products. The first half of this book is phenomenal because it reveals some of the secrets of Ron's success - although it would hard to emulate or recreate exactly what Ron did to start his amazing career... it illustrates that you don't have to wait for opportunity to knock, you need to create your own path, using your own talents and ingenuity. The second half is a like taking a course in basic tv marketing 101 and is a must read for those harboring fantasies of seeing their product in a infomercial or on the home shopping networks.
I highly recommend this read for anyone looking to market their own product via television.... and as someone who has hosted more than 75 infomercials myself, I put my stamp of approval on this tome!
forbes riley
Excellent book, easy to read, captivating and full of ideas.......2004-08-29
I bought the book because I was intrigued by the infomercial of Ron: I admit, I like his style on TV, so I checked if he wrote a book. And sure enough he did.
The book is in 2 parts: autobiography and advices. It is full of good advice coming from years of experience, test and fail, optimize and improve. If you are in business and you are in sales or marketing, just one of the dozens of ideas presented will make worth your while and your money.
Great autobiography *and* how-to guide.......2002-10-10
If the rather egotistical title of this book doesn't put you off, you'll find a fascinating story that's really two books in one. Ron Popeil's infomercials are the stuff of pop culture legend; if you never got a chance to see them during the '60s, '70s or '80s, you surely have seen their parodies. But what's the deal behind Popeil and his "as seen on TV" success?
The first part of this book is Popeil's inspiring autobiography. Surviving a childhood filled with abuse and neglect, he discovered his gift as a salesman as a young man and went on to make a fortune. At the dawn of the television age, he saw TV's potential as an unparalleled marketing tool and grew his marketing empire even further. Ron Popeil's great contribution to retail, therefore, wasn't the myriad of gadgets he sold, but his style of selling on TV -- namely the infomercial.
The second part of the book is essentially a how-to guide for starting a business similar to Popeil's. Even if you have no intention of starting a retail business, the details of how such a business works are fascinating. Topics as arcane as patent protection, TV time buying, negotiating with retail stores for shelf space and financing (which forced Popeil into bankruptcy at one point) are all covered.
Great insight!.......2002-02-20
Ron's book gives one a good overall insight into what it takes to get a product to market. His insights into selling to retail chains..., Infomercials, and getting a product on QVC are invaluable.
It's a great read with many pictures and short stories about his past hit products like The Pocketfisherman, Mr. Microphone, and GLH9 etc.
It also includes a great overview of his early life going through the school of hard knocks.
