Book Description

The sole survivor of a torpedoed destroyer is miraculously cast up on a huge, barren rock in mid-Atlantic. Pitted against him are the sea, the sun, the night cold, and the terror of his isolation. At the core of this raging tale of physical and psychological violence lies Christopher Martin’s will to live as the sum total of his life.

4 out of 5 stars Pincher Martin.......2006-04-30

Reminiscent to a degree of Ambrose Bierce's AN OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE, Pincher Martin is cast into the sea when his ship is torpedoed, and the action of the novel takes place after his death in a purgatory-like land of myth and make-believe. It looks at first as if Martin has survived the shipwreck as he crawls up onto a barren rock in the sea. But as time goes by and the difficulties of survival mount, he begins hallucinating, reliving moments from his past (some of which are hard for the reader to figure out or follow), all in preparation for a final judgment by the Almighty. He encounters God, and when God bids Martin to give up his persistence to exist, Martin defies him. Pincher is turned into a lobster and disappears into the sea. Only in the concluding chapter is it made clear that Martin actually died very shortly after his ship was blown up. A strange novel, to say the least, and one that requires close attention by the reader. More than one reading is probably required to get the full impact of the book.

5 out of 5 stars As usual, Golding ponders the dark side.......2004-07-06

I'm not complaining. I think man's dark potential is always a fascinating topic and Golding is probably the best modern explorer of this theme. Pincher Martin is not only a probing psychological study of an unrepentant man who clings to life with ferocity, it is also an examination of the nature of reality.

Golding employs an old, old narrative trick with skill, steeps the narrative in symbolism, challenges readers to see something admirable in his protagonist, and sets it all on a vividly drawn islet from hell.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent read........2002-11-04

One star taken away only because some of the material is dated. I'm an ex sailor and was enthralled from first page to last. I felt the motion of the boat, the bite of the weather and the stark reality of the island. This book proved to me Mr. Golding is a master story teller.

3 out of 5 stars Stranded on Golding's Narrative Power.......2000-07-26

Golding is an incredible wordsmith. With stark realism and deep insight, he probes one man's outer and inner struggles for survival after washing up on a rock in the mid-Atlantic. I found the psychological portrail wholly believable, but I had a difficult time sympathizing with this character. He's a womanizer, a self-centered egotist. With near-animal drive, he carves out meager existence on the rock. I found very little emotional connection with Martin, and read on primarily because of Golding's narrative power.

Essentially, Golding seems to say that, brought to our lowest common denominator in a fight for life, we are all self-centered, that greed takes over. I found the argument weak because we discover that Martin was this way already. I would've liked to see a selfless person's fight for existence and the consequences of his actions.

Or maybe that's Golding's point: Martin's self-centeredness eventually corrodes his ability to survive because the motivations run shallow. Numerous true-life accounts show the struggle of men and women to rise above their base needs and extend life heroically to others. Selflessness often leads to the survival of the group, it seems, but in this book we have only one character's survival to consider.

A second reading might reveal to me more of Golding's intentions in this story, but the fact remains: Golding knows how to build word upon word until you are trapped within the dwelling of his character's minds. That alone lifts this book above the volumes of so-called literature stacked on most shelves.

Based on Golding's own standards from his other books, I cannot highly recommend this as a great story, but only as a great example of powerful wordage and characterization. I think Golding sells us short here on the premise of survival. I finished the last page with little emotional or intellectual reaction. I felt, like Martin, only blank disillusionment.

5 out of 5 stars The mind of a man revealed in the worst of circumstances........1999-09-19

Golding proves he is a master of probing man's psychology when in the greatest of danger. The plight of the stranded naval officer is vivid and frightening. Riveting, exciting and thoughful, the story displayes Golding's awesome and expansive imagination in such a confined environment. Take heed that the book is about the TWO deaths of Christopher Martin.

LIES THAT BIND by Barbara McMahon
      April 2, 2006

      Amazon rating 4/5

"This second in a trilogy focuses on April Jeffries, a model working in Paris. She returns home to Maraville, Mississippi to visit her former foster mother, Maddie Oglethorpe. Both good and bad memories fill her mind and heart - when she was last home, she and her foster sisters, Eliza and Jo, were split up without explanations and told never to contact each other again. In the previous book, Eliza found her foster sister April in Paris, and asked her to return home because Maddie had suffered a major stroke and needed their help.

April never expected to come home again, and didn't expect to discover she had missed being there. She does have an agenda - she wants to find her biological parents. While Eliza and Jo were from broken homes, April had been given up as a baby and was never told who her parents were. She believes she was born in Maraville. Jack Palmer, a CNN reporter on medical leave, helps her trace where she was born. Slowly but surely, they unravel the mystery of her birth mother.

Jack's career as a CNN reporter may be over. He was injured in Iraq, and is recuperating in Maraville. Just as April was used to a life of glamour and fame, Jack was accustomed to regular travel and adventure. The two have one thing in common - both have vowed not to get into a serious relationship. Already married twice, April knows she can't deal with a third failure. And while she is falling for Jack, she expects that he will soon be bored with her." - Complete review at BookLoons - M. I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the first in the series. The characters are likeable and although I couldn't say they were believably accurate (I have never met a super model), the people as written felt real to me. I am looking forward to the final in the trilogy.

      Book Description

Two of the most popular Dark Shadows characters, Barnabas Collins and Angelique, were eternally bound by love and hate. Now, actress Lara Parker, Angelique herself, tells how it all began.

      A passion born in ecstasy...

The dashing heir of a New England shipping magnate, Barnabas Collins captured the heart of the exquisite, young Angelique amidst the sensual beauty of Martinique, her island home. But Angelique's brief happiness is doomed when Barnabas cruelly deserts her and becomes engaged to another. Little, though, does Barnabas know of the evil his betrayal will unleash...

And destroyed by jealousy and betrayal

For Angelique is no ordinary woman. Raised in the mysterious black art of voodoo witchcraft, she has long ago pledged her soul to darkness and become immortal. Vowing to torment and destroy Barnabas, a vengeful Angelique damns him to eternal life as a vampire--a companion to accompany her forever. Little, though, does Angelique understand the depth of Barnabas's fury...

Vividly imagined, grippingly written, each Dark Shadows novel is filled with the eroticism, supernatural suspense, and spellbinding storytelling that has made this classic daytime serial a timeless hit.

5 out of 5 stars tremendous first book.......2006-08-03

I was a big fan of the Dark Shadows series as a kid. I came across this novel on amazon and I was eager to read it because who could provide better insight into the character of Angelic than Lara parker, the actress who played her in the series. She did a great job. The story was well written, interesting and made me feel as if the story picked up right where the series left off. I enjoyed the story immensely and read it from cover to cover. Although I have yet to read her new novel "the Salem branch", if it's as half as good as Angelic's descent, it will be worth buying the book. I find it hard to believe that any die hard dark shadows fan would not enjoy this story. It provides mystery, intrique, suspense and distress in dealing with both Angelic's as well as Barnabus's character. It's a tremendous story and every True Dark Shadows fan should read this book.

Reading this one felt like watching the old show, but with even more detail. There is another book on the horizon by Lara, but when? Anyone know?

5 out of 5 stars lara parker nails it in a bewitching way.......2004-01-03

the novel angelique's descent is one of the years surprises yes it is true she is one of the stars that stared in the original series so she only could tell it ms. parker writes beautifully as she looked on dark shadows and she even attends the yearly festivals she answers all the questions that most d ark shadows fans would like to know about her from when her father sold her to her mother's death to the first meeting of barnabas, this is a must read for all of her fans and fans of dark shadows. fans will be waiting in much anticapation for her next dark shadows novel, for me i cant wait to,as i was one of those kids that couldnt wait to get home from school to see what would happen next ms. parker helped the show to be fun as she does in her novel i recommand "angelique's descent " to all you will be delighted to her book.

5 out of 5 stars well written - highly entertaining.......2003-12-13

This book is so good I couldn't put it down. You wouldn't even have to be a Dark Shadows fan (I am of course) to enjoy this book. My daughter is now reading and she can't put it down either. This book should have gotten more publicity. Lara Parker is an excellent writer and I hope she will continue to write books of this same genre.

      4 out of 5 stars Persephone Unhinged.......2002-09-08

Only a Scorpio or the woman who originally played the central character of the deranged witch, Angelique, on the original Dark Shadows soap opera could have written this fabulously demented story of mad revenge - and, happily, Lara Parker is both.

The first half of this novel is invented out of whole cloth by Parker, since the supernatural soap opera never delved that deeply into Angelique's beginnings in the late 18th century, and is surprisingly clever and interesting. Angelique is taken from her nature-healing mother by her cane plantation-owning father in Martinique, who correctly surmises that if he can convince the slaves his young daughter is really the voodoo goddess Erzulie - when she is in reality, of course, nothing but his own mouthpiece - he can get them to do anything he wants, and bear increasing hardships. Angelique, however, has a genuine knack for true witchcraft, which manifests itself over time and ultimately foments an uprising of the very slaves her evil father wished to subdue.

The second half of Angelique's epic story is already familiar to fans of the series, though they will no doubt enjoy reading Parker's well-written rendition of it: Angelique escapes the chaos of Martinique, becomes personal maid to the spoiled young French society darling Josette Dupres, and falls in love with wealthy adventurer Barnabas Collins - who, after a passionate affair with Angelique, ends up betrothed by circumstance to Josette, initiating an increasingly ugly vendetta-by-witchcraft that ultimately costs both Barnabas and Angelique their lives.

Parker is not the most polished of writers - she is an actress, by profession - but her style is smooth and easy, and the story is well thought-out, well told, and genuinely exciting and fascinating. It's also surprisingly well researched, only off on one or two minor historical points that are really of no consequence.

Hopefully, this series will continue - and, if it does, hopefully Parker will write another. This book is currently out of print, but is well worth searching out, both for fans of the original series and for fans of Anne Rice-style supernatural/historical romances.

If you are drawn to cleverness, intellectual excessiveness, and a confounding ability to make the simple seem hopelessly complicated, then this book is for you!!!
Otherwise try "I Am That" or "The Science of Enlightenment", both of which will take you down the rabbit hole of non-duality/Advaita with grace, charm and simplicity.

            5 out of 5 stars A True Modern Sage.......2004-10-11

In the forward of this book Wayne Liquorman states it best: "WWW is not in the business of helping you attain Enlightenment. He knows you have no more substance than the shadow on the wall. Shadows on the wall cannot become enlightened." Gather all the notions that have been collected and throw them over the edge and reside there with nothing/everything.

Anyone interested in philosophy or just hoping to see things differently should read this book. Long a favorite of Wei Wu Wei's students, Posthumous Pieces is perhaps the clearest and most concise of Wei Wu Wei's books. A master of the esoteric and never short on profound aphorisms, Wei Wu Wei shows again in this book that what we seak is the seaking.

This book focuses on Stangl Artware produced from 1924 to 1978. Pottery and porcelain birds and animals, Terra Rose, hand-painted and brushed gold lamps, stoneware, smoker's items and sportsmen's giftware, dealer signs, paper products, advertising, and premiums are all covered in this encyclopedia. Lists every known shape, glaze, and treatment used in producing Stangl's vast lines of artware, giftware, lamps, and birds inspired by Audubon. There are also sections on trademarks, and backstamps, solid color glazes, underglaze colors and history of Stangl. AUTHORBIO: Known to champion the cause of historic preservation, Rob Runge is fondly referred to as "Mr. Stangl." His collection of Fulper and Stangl pottery and dinnerware is quite extensive. He was born, raised, and educated in the Hunterdon County/Trenton, New Jersey area. He has been intensely involved with many civic activities aimed at advancing the interests of collectors today. This is a well-written book with well-explained, lovely projects. I especially loved the vintage fabric sections. There are sections for living rooms, kitchens & dining rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, children's rooms, workrooms and outdoors. There are templates and sources given. The book makes you feel good about having your own style and tastes. Although it contains "stylish" ideas, they are not just for the rich and crafty people. It gives you an idea about how to select and place items with an "eye" for taste.

This book is a very nice compilation. It has the usual high "Taschen" standard of photography and is nice and heavy on the pictures. The other great thing about the book is that it shows a series of very "lived in" sort of interiors (unlike the really contrived sort you so often see in design books). Overall, a really enjoyable read for anyone interested in seeing how the other half lives.

                Book Description

The erotic art of times past is sometimes the most captivating. ROMANTIQUE offers a veritable banquet of early nineteenth century erotic prints and lithographs, culled from the renowned private collection of rare and beautiful erotica amassed by Hans-Jurgen Dopp.

In both black and white and brilliant color, these lithographs explicitly present the full spectrum of human sexuality. Solos, two-ways, three-ways, four-ways - even the "Noble Orgy" - are joyously reprinted in ROMANTIQUE. But the high artistic quality and aesthetic appeal of these images make them unusual as well as sensual. A mood of delight and humor suffuses these prints. All are showcased in a book of stunningly handsome quality.

ROMANTIQUE is interesting as cultural history as well, as this collection sheds a powerful, important and delirously unabashed light on erotic desire in early nineteenth century bourgeois France. Here are aristocrats and ladies, shepherds and shepherdesses, nuns and lesbians - all romp through these pages satisfying themselves in ballrooms and bedrooms, on riverbanks and in convents, oblivious of conventional morality and the watchful gaze.

                11' x 12", 224 pp., over 200 prints and lithographs

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures of Bourgeois Pleasure.......2002-01-27

Erotic lithographs from France form the content of a spectacular, large, and well-produced book _Romantique: Erotic Art of the Early Nineteenth Century_ (Elephant & Mouse Editions). The selections here come from Hans-Jurgen Döpp, who is apparently a famed collector of such things: "His important collection of erotic art has been built up over many years by drawing upon sources in various European countries." As in most such collections of erotic art, here are introductory chapters to put the art into context and explain its importance, and as such essays go, the ones included here are just fine. But the "reader" always wonders if the words are just there as justification for the shameful pleasures indulged in by the "viewer."

The charm of the pictures in this book (and they are charming) is that they were made to appeal to the bourgeoisie who would be buying them by depicting just their sort of people in familiar settings. There are some rather silly historical pictures here; in one a knight in a suit of armor (well, not the entire suit, just the coat without the pants, so as not to impede the nether regions) raises his glass while fondling his girlie as she fondles him. For the most part, however, these are contemporaries, showing off the best style of their times. They are dressed in clothes that are similar to those more familiarly shown in period fashion books. Oh, they do remain dressed, most of them. The women lower their blouses to show fashionably small breasts and button aureoles, or raise their dresses just so to show what we would now regard as buns of less than steel. The men may have their trousers off or down, but generally their priapic displays of eagerness are available for the delight of the ladies involved by means of unbuttoned but undoffed breeches. Everything is pretty in these rather romantic pictures, which are divided into sections for soloists, duets, trios, quartets, and "the noble orgy."

This is a delightful book of pretty pictures. Anyone who likes looking at erotic couplings will enjoy it, and those who need a "proper" reason to do so can always claim they are looking at history, and their enjoyment will be undimmed.

4 out of 5 stars Great heroine & a great futuriistic romantic read!.......2005-03-25

Finding out that one of the women taken in LOVE'S CAPTIVE had a brother, our story goes back to Earth, were our hero, Eric, a Green Beret, has been captured by the enemy. Instead of dying from getting tortured, he is rescued (and healed) by aliens and taken to Volarn, where Eric is reunited with his sister Olga. Now what? Return to Earth?

Princess Kasha can't stand the fact that women are brought to their world to try and boost their flagging population growth, but more so because she know she will never be able to have her own mate. When the earthman catches her fancy, she see's him as a way too have a romantic distraction. Only Eric won't settle for anything less than marriage when all she wants is an affair.

Myra Nour takes us back to the planet of Volarn where even a crown princess can be in the military. HEART OF THE DRAGON, to me, moves quickly, however, there are long passages with very little dialogue. While this lets the reader see more of the sights, I did find myself wishing that the characters would tell me what they were seeing. But don't plan on skipping paragraphs because a lot really does happen.

I really like Kasha as a heroine. She is in the Getra (military) where it is her skills and abilities as a warrior that she is admired for not awarded to her because of her status. At the same time she is still a woman and even though a little stuck up (she is a princess), she is able to realize she wants more than the lonely existence she has allowed herself (she has an interesting secret!). It was fun to watch her grow emotionally and in the end fight for the chance to love Eric.

There is a dragon in this story that Kasha and Eric find while out trying to track down an animal that is killing small children. Eric finds the dragon as a baby and names him Puff (after Puff the magic dragon...) however rather than being magical, Puff slobbers quite a bit, takes control of the story (for a little while) and had me laughing my head off. HEART OF THE DRAGON, while actually referring to Eric, is worth reading, if for any other reason, Puff.

The people of Volarn have a Tarthra joining (which is initiated by the men) and will insure a love match. Because Eric is from Earth he cannot initiate the Tarthra, so in Kashas' eyes how could they suit? The romance between Kasha and Eric is sweet as Eric really tries to teach her that how two people feel about each other is very important, that there is more to a relationship than a physical joining. I got more than a few chuckles as Kasha tried to sway Eric into having casual sex, and Eric grouped with Jarvic, her cousin, quite frequently to avoid her. It was a roll reversal of a sort which I thoroughly enjoy in stories!

Fast paced and witty, HEART OF THE DRAGON is a wonderful story that I really enjoyed. While you can read the story alone, it takes place after LOVE'S CAPTIVE and Serena and Rhamus are in this story; so if you are like me you'll want to read them in order so you won't spoil the first story by seeing the happily ever after.

And what is going on with Jarvic? So I'm anticipating the third book in this series!

                              Book Description

The first full-length biography of stage actress Eva Le Gallienne traces her life from her birth into the troubled but fascinating household of Richard Le Gallienne, British writer and intimate member of the Oscar Wilde circle, to her recent death.

This comprehensive biography of the actress Rex Reed called "a national treasure" draws upon Robert A. Schanke’s interviews and correspondence not only with Le Gallienne but also with more than one hundred of her colleagues and friends, including Glenda Jackson, Burgess Meredith, Eli Wallach, Peter Falk, Ellen Burstyn, Anne Jackson, Farley Granger, Jane Alexander, Uta Hagen, and Rosemary Harris. Forty-two illustrations offer highlights of Le Gallienne’s many notable performances in such plays as Hedda Gabler, Liliom, The Cherry Orchard, Peter Pan, Camille, Mary Stuart, The Royal Family, and The Dream Watcher.

Behind her public role as famous actress and as the founding and maintaining force of the first civic repertory theatre in the United States, Eva Le Gallienne led a private life troubled by her personal struggle with lesbianism. For more than fifty years she lived in shadows. Like many lesbians of her generation, she viewed herself as a man trapped in a female body. Because she was unwilling to compromise and hide her true self in a convenient marriage or to camouflage her relationships in order to boost her career, her sexuality became a nemesis that defined her great need for privacy.

Le Gallienne complained that her lesbianism ruined her career. And as Robert Schanke points out, it also influenced her selection of scripts, management practices, and style of acting, ultimately affecting her work’s critical reception. By presenting for the first time this complete account of the life of one of the theatre’s great talents, Schanke provides his audience with a fascinating story that also serves as a barometer of the changing values, tastes, and attitudes of American society.

You know that Eva La Gallienne was probably one of the finest actresses to be on stage during the last century. The only problem is that she was a lesbian which may have prevented her from overshadowing a rival, Helen Hayes, or any one of her contemporaries. The main problem with Eva was that she clung to the theatrical stage than to television or film. Her appearance on St. Elsewhere was disrupted by her behavior. She was not always kind or fair to her female lovers and companions. Eva was not at all a perfect human being but on stage, she was magnificient even in the Broadway Archives film, "The Royal Family" with another legendary British dame not yet Rosemary Harris playing her daughter. Eva's sexual orientation did not prevent her from facing cruelty in her own life from outsiders. At the same time, she had her own demons like alcoholism to face. Although she never got the Kennedy Center Honours because she probably wouldn't have attended the ceremony, she was terribly shy and for good reason. Her relationships with women were always suspected to be more than just friendship. SOmetimes they were but not always, in the last years of her life, she lived in Connecticut away from Broadway. SHe valued her privacy because people speculate too much about somebody's sexual orientation. The author of this book first met Eva with his wife and daughter twenty years before, ironically 20 years later, he himself has a male partner which he dedicates this book too. How ironic that the author is in the same predicament as Eva once was but she chose not to live a lie but to be private about such matters. If somebody should ask who her true love was, there is only definitive answer and that is the stage which has no gender preference or prejudices. She was very happy on stage and that's the truth. Rest in peace, Eva La Gallienne, we miss you still.
