The story of a brave woman and romance.......1998-08-01
I have not found many romances appealing. But this book is different. It's not people doing a bunch of silly things and playing games to attract the opposite sex. It's honest to goodness love. It's about real life. This isn't a fairytale by any means. The language is magical and it will truly steal your heart. It almost made me cry. I recommend this to anyone who likes to read about true love and real life.
Book Description
In this vividly written, suspense-driven novel, the secrets shared between two sisters erupt in tragedy.
Rikki Moore was always the star of the family, easily outshining her younger sister, Stacy, at every turn. Smart, kind, and beautiful, it was no surprise when Rikki met and married the perfect man -- pediatrician Matt Dresden. Her students at 59th Street Elementary School adored her, the church matrons solicited her help on every committee, and everyone wanted the golden couple to put in an appearance at their parties. Stacy? She was just the overweight little sister who couldn't get her love life together.
But the world didn't know about the storms that rippled just beneath the surface of Rikki's image of perfection. Ever since she was a teenager there were emotional breakdowns and obsessive behaviors -- secrets that Stacy was left to bear alone. Folks whispered, but they didn't know. When Rikki's husband, Matt, mysteriously disappears, however, the Moore family's carefully constructed image comes crashing down.

The Characters.......2006-10-08
The writing was good in this novel, and the story itself was an important one--a tale of two sisters, the narrator stable and her older sister mentally ill. Because the girls' mother denies any problems, even after her daughter's teenage suicide attempt, the narrator bears the brunt of her sister's illness. She puts aside her own desires much of the time in order to shelter her sister from the world.
The story was heartbreaking and honest; however, I wasn't as interested in it as I could have been. The problem was the fact that I didn't like any of the characters. I thought Stacy, the narrator, was weak and she should have refused to continue taking care of her sister for so long. She went so far as to let her sister destroy her marriage, which was wrong. Her husband, Eric, was a lousy person for not being more understanding about her difficult situation. Mentally ill Rikki was selfish and irritating, and her husband, Matthew, was delusional to marry her and expect her to be fine when he already knew about her mental problems. The girls' mother, Olivia, was worst of all. She spent her entire life denying Rikki's obvious problems while expecting Stacy to contantly stand guard. It was inexcusable. Perhaps with more likable characters I would have given this book a higher rating.
True and Jolting.......2005-07-28
I read this book in one sitting. It was amazing. As someone living with a family member stricken with bi-polar disorder and depression, I can say that this book captures so much about those affected so realistically. In addition, Ms. Hall's book is so gripping that it doesn't read like a "mental health" book at all - it is an engaging and well-written work of fiction.
The drama is high, but in a VERY good way. The story flows seamlessly from chapter to chapter. The book hooks you in and refuses to let you go. You may think you know what's going to happen, but you don't. You'll finish the book feeling full of emotion (in my opinion, the best feeling you can have after a book).
If you're looking for a book that is not only important but entertaining and interesting, this is it. Buy it and share it with friends - you'll want to talk about it the next day, I promise.
Ms. Hall is a talented writer and it was hard to believe that this was her first book. I'm sure her future books will be just as if not more engaging and I just can't wait!
Tragic, Emotional.......2004-01-28
Rikki Moore was the popular, smart, beautiful sister who always achieved, but inside her mind, there
was another side to Rikki that most people didn't see. Stacy was the over weight little sister standing in the shadows of her her sister. Stacy always came to her sisters rescue and the only one who was so burdened with the effects of her sisters " storms".
When Rikki is hospitalized from attempting suicide their mother still doesn't want to face that her daughter is mentally ill.
Stacy covers her sisters behaviors and in doing so ruins Stacy's marriage. When Rikki's devoted husband
can no longer control her or her outburst he wants a divorce. Stacy is left once again running to her sisters rescue.
When Matt Rikki's husband mysteriously disappears, Stacy finds the clues that don't add up straight but
still keeps her sisters secret. This novel is powerful! A family suddenly shattered by tragedy. A sister torn from her own life while trying stay ahead of her sisters " storms".
Tragic, Emotional.
Really Good Book! Powerful.......2004-01-16
Couldn't put the book down. Rachel was able to describe passionately the horrors of hiding a mental illness in the family. As a social worker, I found her descriptions of family dynamics and dysfunction powerful and accurate. As a fellow Los Angelean it was fun to read about all of the issues of teen years like k-swiss, jordache, etc. This book would be an excellent teaching tool for Graduate Programs in Social Work and Psychology. Good work Rachel! Can't wait for the next one!
You will enjoy this book.......2004-01-12
I really liked this book. It had its share of crazy surprises. It is an easy read book and it really helps since it is a real page-turner. This book really really helped to catch my attention since the main character had my same name and religion. Go get this book, it is good!!!!!

GREAT LOVE STORY.......2007-01-17
I enjoyed this Indian love story very much. I am a die-hard romance reader and this sweet love story did it for me. Two Eagles is the perfect guy! The love scenes were spicy enough and Cassie E. put in a few of those.Read this one for a nice, feel good feeling when youre thru.
Savage Beloved, a story of the love and lives of Candy and Two Eagles........2006-07-30
The story of Candy, Shadow, and Two Eagles and the Wichita people is an interesting twist of the lives of all of them and how they deal with it. I loved the connection of Candy and Shadow, her pet, and how it affects everyone's lives. The story line is intesting and enjoyable and you can feel their pain and love as you read and become envolved in the story being told. When Candy is found by Two Eagles, he doesn't believe her when she said she tried helping Short Robes, and keeps her captive. The story changes when he finds out she is telling the truth and can be trusted. I love learning the ways and customs of the Native Americans and all they had to endure when the white ponies arrived and took over. The book shows their love for their people and their respect and love of the land as they try to keep their homes and people free in a peaceful way. I always enjoy Cassie Edwards books, she has a way of making them interesting, enjoyable, and informative with each story told. I hate to put them down once I start reading them.

fine by the Edwardian numbers Indian romance.......2006-05-25
In 1849 Kansas, Wichita tribesman Two Eagles assaults Fort Hope in an attempt to free his Uncle Short Robes held prisoner there. Fearing the worst from the savages, Candy Creighton hides, but is soon abducted by the outraged Two Eagles as a savage beating has left his uncle near death. He takes her as the price for the affront committed by the military to his beloved relative.
Candy swears to her captor that she did everything she could and more to ease Short Robes' plight. Two Eagles wants to believe her, but knows whites lie. As she adapts to life amongst his tribe, she falls in love with him and quickly cherishes his people. He reciprocates, but their road to happiness is filled with danger from outside and betrayal from inside.
The plot is the same for the gazillion time. The lead couple is also the same noble ethical individuals as always for the gazillion time. So knowing all this, somehow even vowing never again, this reviewer enjoys Cassie Edwards' formulaic Indian romances. This one is no exception as the plot and lead protagonists are from the same cookie cutter, refreshed somewhat by the lifestyle of the Wichita tribe. As always Ms. Edwards entertains her fans.

The best historical romance I have ever read!!!.......2005-04-10
I came to this book through a garage sale. What a gem it is!!! I have read it many times, lost count, and I never tire of reading it! It's such a beautiful story, U can't help but fall in love with the hero and heroine. It is the first book about natives that I have read that doesn't have the same old storyline about the indian taking a white woman captive. In fact, Tonnewa rescues poor Susannah and wants to return her to her own people. But certain circumstances don't permit him and to save the white woman Susannah from death, he must take her as a wife. At first it is an union not of their choice but slowly, gradually they come to care for each other. I love this book, I only wish the author had kept on writing novells. Can't find any other books of her.
This book is so good.......2000-12-05
I have read this book three times and finally decided I had to go out and buy it. It is not your typical romance. The heroine is fantastic and the hero is as well. Hans is a pretty sad person. It makes you realize what you could miss out on lin life.

When she is offered a position on planet Goddard, where the average life span exceeds 150 years, she leaps at the chance. The colonists' radical-and illegal-science just might be her only hope for a cure. Graysha must convince a group of paranoid rebel scientists to trust the daughter of their worst enemy, her mother.

Not bad but nothing unique........2006-07-23
I didn't dislike this story. I read it through but there was nothing new or interesting enough to draw me in that much. I would say I enjoyed the characterization. Call me cazy. I even liked her Gribbin. Not a page turner for me but not a bad read.
Complex, colorful, and compelling.......2004-09-25
Others have detailed the plot, so I won't do so here. I thought this was a terrific story. I'm very satisfied with the way Kathy Tyers rewrote her original "Shivering World." She writes so intelligently, I have to--I WANT to--read slowly to absorb and follow what's going on. She has SUCH an incredible grasp of sociology and politics and power struggles, it blows my mind. It makes the characters, their actions, and the storyline emminently believable. I'm also a biologist, so following how she imagines biological science will "evolve" in the future is intriguing to me.
Her novels are always incredibly deep and colorful and complex. The characters in this rewrite of the original story are rich and varied--each has something important to win or lose, which drives their actions. No one is two-dimensional. Well, except for the research technician with the three-sentence role. :-) The book ends on a satisfying note, but it also ends in a way that could segue into a sequel or a series like her Firebird trilogy. I hope that's in the works, I'd be totally excited. The characters she has created in this book have enough conflicts and chemistry to pull that off, I believe.
I'd buy this book for any science-fiction lover. The author has created a sweeping canvas with infinite possibilities in this fictional world and its characters. I am hoping she's writing more in this setting.
Super science fiction.......2004-02-19
Earth is a wasteland because of the hole in the ozone layer allowing in the U.V. Rays. People live in domes and the wealthy live in space habitats. Terraforming of Mars and Venus has not been a complete success. The colonists of Goddard hire the Gaea Consortium to terraform the planet so they and their children will be able to live free of enclosed habitats. Dr. Graysha Brady Phillips works for Gaea because she needs the exorbitant salary to pay off her debts and she has heard rumors that they practice the outlawed science of genetic engineering.
Graysha suffers from Flaherty's Syndrome and will die at the age of fifty as there is no cure. She hopes that the geneticists on Goddard can fix her damaged chromosomes so she can have children that won't be carriers of the disease. Graysha's position is tenuous because her mother, as the head of the Eugenics Board, will carry out the law of irradiation and sterilization if the people of Goddard are practicing outlawed science on human beings. When Goddard is threatened Grayshya does her best to find the solution that will save the place and people she now loves.
This science fiction story is both believable and plausible and readers will find themselves so immersed in the action of the characters that they will finish this book in one sitting. The audiences care deeply for the heroine who knows that she will die at a young age but live each day to its fullest and doesn't feel sorry for herself. Kathy Tyers is a talented writer who is a fantastic world builder in the tradition of Karen Hancock.

Kathy's best so far.......2000-06-27
I recently finished Shivering World, and this book is guaranteed to make you think, laugh and cry. Grasha Brady-Phillip's life since she decided to go to the human colony planet Goddard is both intriguing and suspenseful. The back cover states "The colonists think Graysha's a spy. Graysha thinks the colonists are trying to kill her. They're both right..." Read about Graysha's struggle to gain their trust, all for the sake of finding a cure for the disease that is eating her away at the cellular level. A must read!

Book Description
Hundreds of color photos of productions pieces, garden ware, glaze types, and a detailed 200+ page catalog section. This book traces the roots of Zanesville pottery from the Ohio Encaustic Tile Co. through the E.G. Bowen Co., to the present. Readers will find utilitarian stoneware, artware vases, jardinieres and pedestal sets, and amazingly large hand-turned garden ware. AUTHORBIO: Jon Rans, native Hoosier, artist, musician, author, and conservator/restorer, has many published on various American art potteries and related subjects. He has worked as a professional photographer and enjoys collecting and researching little-known Arts and Crafts potteries. Ceramics restoration is his field of expertise and he is currently head of the Art Pottery Restoration Department of the New Orleans Conservation Guild. AUTHORBIO: Glenn Ralston began collecting Zanesville Stoneware in 1976 because of the pleasing color tones and the comfortable masculine heft. This led to him searching flea markets in the Northeast for "ancient" motion picture incidentals for the then-to-be American Museum of the Moving Image. AUTHORBIO: Nate Russell has a background in the fine arts, having studied sculpture, photography, and painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has worked professionally as art gallery curator, retail store and furniture showroom display artists, ornamental metalworker, and woodworker. He has been dealing in and collecting American vintage ceramics since 1990. REVIEW: This book features the beautiful, sometimes overlooked Zanesville pottery, which exhibits simple forms and harmonious glazes. Detailed background on the company is provided, hundreds of color photographs, and original company catalog pages.
Customer Reviews:
"stoneage modern" heartland story, a chapter of history.......2002-03-02
I am pleased to be associated with this Zanesville book. We are all indebted to Jon Rans that his hard work overcame some unforseen challenges. So, I trust Rans will follow up with a further encylopedic sequel to this real heartland story of history, people, commerce, art and industry during periods of massive cultural changes in America.
Zanesville Stoneware coming of Age.......2002-02-19
Great publication that reflects the brilliance of Jon Rans and his collaborators.
One of the best pottery chronologies ever written considering that most of the records of this company were lost in a couple of trajic fires.
Some of the pictures could be of higher quality and the layouts of the pictures vs. discriptions is a little confusing.
Much needed, could've been better........2002-02-09
It was with pleasure that I received and read the first pass on the history of this long misunderstood pottery company. Although the author makes a good attempt to document the history he falls a bit short. Many followers of this pottery know the confusion regarding the business relationship between Zanesville Stoneware and Francis Duggan of The Old Pot Shop in Norwalk, Connecticut. Rans had the chance to set the record straight that Zanesville made all the Old Pot Shop marked pots but either chose not to or did not fully understand the relationship. Although this is perhaps the most important aspect of the history for the collector it received a mere short paragraph. The pictures are sufficient and good if one considers that this is the only resource other than original catalogs, but more time spent with lighting would have gone a long way. Good book for the pottery lovers shelf but one that will undoubtedly be improved upon some day.

Electrostatic Experiments: An Encyclopedia of Early Electrostatic Experiments, Demonstrations, Devices, and Apparatus
ASIN: 0071373233 |
Book Description
One of the best books on electrostatics for the hobbyists, inventor, or experimenter is updated and expanded to include newly uncovered information on electrostatic generators and complete instructions for building various types, including Wimshurst and Van de Graaff generators. Throughout the book, the author provides hard-to-find information on electrical anomalies, which represent the frontier of electrostatic research.
Covering theory and presenting electroscope and other construction projects and experiments, this handbook also includes experiments with electrohorticulture, gravitation and electricity, cold light, and electric tornadoes. Homemade Lightning is both an excellent first book for the building electrical experimenter and a superb book for accomplished experimenters who haven't spent much time with electrostatics.
Customer Reviews:
Great for the Mad Scientist.......2007-04-12
This is a good book for the experimenter in us all. You can build and experiment with electrostatics.
Nicely done book on electrostatics.......2006-11-10
There's a lot of material floating around the web and bookstores that deals with Tesla and related topics. However, when it comes to good old fashion electro-statics, there is no where near the same volume of information. In fact, I've found four books pretty much cover the field -- at least for my money. Something to consider when contemplating a purchase of books on niche subjects such as electrostatics, books tend to go out of print rather fast. The print runs are small, and often the author or publisher will not reprint. This means, get the book while you can. It might be oop and only available on the secondary collectors market later.
Homemade Lightning (R.A. Ford) -- If you are interested in putting together an electrostatic device, this is the book for you. Lots of how-to with pictures and explanation. I think as a first book this is your best bet. And as a book for creating running examples, this is your best bet. However, I don't believe I would want to have just one book on the subject. The other three books mentioned below add their own dimension to the subject and are (in my opinion) worth the few dollars needed to create a mini-library on the subject.
Electrostatic Experiments (G.W. Francis) -- The subtitle for this book is "An encyclopedia of early electrostatic experiments, demonstrations, devices, and apparatus." The book lives up to its name. A great book for an overview of the field. I know it sounds a little silly, but the nice bright white paper and crisp illustrations are a real boon to this book. The font is well chosen and the leading is easy to read. In this book you will find reference to odd-ball experiments that other books just don't get around to talking about. For example, Eggs illuminated. (p.200) and Illumination of oranges (p.201). If you are looking for demonstrations or ideas for creating new displays for lecture or theater, this book has plenty of inspiration.
Electrostatics (A.D. Moore) -- A nice home experiments how-to book. The book is a little chatty in parts. I liked this. The author speaks with a direct, sitting across the table, style.
Static Electricity (J.H. Pepper) -- This material is extracted fom Cyclopaedic Science Simplified 1889. I use this for historical reasons and to poke around in. The book since it was written in 1889 assumes a fair degree of background by the reader. Great pictures and some nice explanations of how things work. You just need to be able to penetrate the older text.
Building the Generator..........2006-07-14
I'm well into it now, so I've gotta finish, but damn! This thing is neither cheap nor easy to build.
At a casual glance, the instructions look fairly straight forward, but once you've got your materials (a shopping list at the beginning would be super helpful) you realize that the drawings leave some things to be desired (like, in many cases, dimensions)...if the drawing you're looking for is there at all. With a little head-scratching though you can sort it all out.
I've spent somewhere between $250 and $300 on the materials alone. You can buy a Wimhurst kit from Edmund Scientific for $120 but, y'know... its not as cool as making your own...
Tool-wise, its good to either have, or know somebody who has a drill press, lathe, router and various saws and sanders. I don't mind 'cause I'm a tool junkie- I needed a (good-ish) excuse to buy a lathe- but start factoring that in to your overall cost...
All that said though, the plans for the dirod in A.D. Moore's book don't look any clearer.
If you want to build your own spark machine, its probably good to understand the principle behind the machines and just start going at it. The drawings and diagrams in the book are good for setting you off in the right direction if nothing else... after all: the first people to develop these machines started off with nothing more than an idea- you get to start with some reasonably good drawings and a knowledge that if you stick close to the plans you'll get something that works.
Many faults but can mostly overcome them.......2005-06-17
Homemade lightening is only really valuable for it's in depth explanation of the authors own devices. There is also a lack of explanation of electrical theory in this book which the author probably justifies by saying that it doesn't have a strong basis anyways. Since throughout the later chapters he lividly explains how current theories have huge holes in them. The latter half of the book works outside of everything you've ever learned about physics, which was something of a disappointment. Some solid explanation of electrostatic principles with updated graphics would have been much more satisfying then the chronology of weirdness presented at the end. The total effect of first, not explaining electrostatic principles, and then providing highly technical and unsolved problems to the reader, leaves the reading either, in awe of R.A. Ford, or simply confused. A.D. Moore's Electrostatics is better for understanding electrostatics and for not having odd theories thrown at you. Another thing, Ford keeps saying how you should `visualize' the electric field to understand it, yet he only has one diagram of fields, and that's of gravity.
Home Made Lightning.......2003-09-05
This book is eye opening in that it awakens you to the fact that many traditional explanations of electricity do not explain all of the properties of electricity. A wonderful reference work. The illustrations are old, perhaps because the research seemed to stop around the 1930's. His chapter 6 on "Theories of generator operation" is excellent. His statement that "It is fair to say that there are as many theories as there are inventors of original generator designs." inspirers you to learn about all of the other designs. The book is packed with extensive references and I have recently acquired many of them. Although his references concerning Nikola Tesla are not pronounced, at least he mentions him in chapter 21 "Some philosophical conclusions and insights". Final answer: If I lose the book, I'll buy another!

Hops & history.......2002-01-15
This is a fun book for reading as well as a handy guide for planning a London pub crawl or two. The book breaks down London by area, with one or two pages on each pub of interest. Although it's not a comprehensive guide by any means, it does highlight some of the most interesting pubs in London. I visited The Anchor & Bunch of Grapes after reading this book and both were wonderful examples of different periods of pub life in London.
Book Description
This handsomely photographed guide offers 15 themed walks through London, each featuring a selection of the city¹s finest historic pubs.

Does exactly what it promises.......2005-04-17
This is an excellent book that does exactly what it promises, gives you some pleasant walks around London interspersed with relaxing pub breaks. Be sure to order half pints, though, or you may have trouble walking back to your hotel.
An indispensible resource for touring London.......2005-02-11
Along with Rick Steves' London Guide, the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, & a London A To Z street guide, this book will always be on my "Must Bring" list for the Metrop. 15+ walking tours makes for plenty of exercise, whether walking, sightseeing, or my personal fave, performing pint curls. I looked all over London before finding it at Stanfords(a great travel bookshop) between Covent Garden & Charing Cross Rd., as this was not available on Amazon. Now it is, & your travels to London are the better for it. One tip: Mr. Bruning's tours all start at a given point(don't they all?). By using multimap.co.uk I did my own tours, by setting the tours from postcode to postcode, so after an afternoon at the British Museum, I was itinerized from there(actually, beginning at the Museum Tavern pub across the street) to Soho, to Picadilly. Unfortunately, my local is listed here, but that's the bad news. The good news is it gets the recognition it deserves, and no, I'm not going to tell you. Find your own, you'll be glad you did, and you'll be glad you got this great little book. You can check out Ted Bruning on FLN's Thirsty Traveler show, also. He starts their tour at the Market Porter in SE1. I highly recommend that pub, and this book. Cheers!

Customer Reviews:
Tour Guide in a Book!.......2001-05-15
The Blue Guide is without doubt THE best guide to have with you in London (or Rome, or Florence, or Paris...)as you are touring the sites. For most attractions you don't need to buy the pricey guidebooks at the site to figure out what you are seeing - the Blue Guide will take you room-by-room through musuems, explain the who, what, where and when of the art and architecture around you and give you a decent history lesson. Take this guide, a general guide like Time Out or Frommer's and a good map (A-Z London)and you are set to enjoy London without breaking your back or the bank. This is NOT the guide to plan your trip with; although they recommend excellent lodgings and restaurants the descriptions are one-liners - most people like more information particulary when choosing accommodations.

Book Description
A pioneer who started his own film studio before the National Film Board, Budge Crawley all but dominated the early years of the Canadian Film Awards. He was a one-man industry who hated government handouts; a filmmaker who won Canada its first feature-film Academy Award in 1976. A dynamic, vigorous, infuriating man who loved two wives and a girlfriend, occasionally at the same time, Budge Crawley was Canadian cinema.
In Barbara Wade Rose's account of the man and the moxy, Budge: What Happened to Canada's King of Film, she recounts Crawley's successes-and his failures. At 16 he picked up his first camera and focused on Canada, creating a multitude of portraits of his country that were judged among the best amateur films in the world. In 1939 Budge and his first wife, Judy, formed Crawley Films, one of North America's biggest studios outside of Hollywood, made some 5,000 films, and won more than 270 international awards. As a documentarian he was an internationalist, a schemer who beat out producers half his age for the rights to the life story of Janis Joplin by quoting Bible scripture to her fundamentalist mother. He seized from the hands of a Hollywood editor film footage about a fiasco of an expedition that would become his most famous, Oscar-winning documentary, The Man Who Skied Down Everest.
By the 1970s, as Canada's film industry grew around him, Budge Crawley
