Book Description

Chaos's evil shadow sweeps over Krynn

During the hottest summer in memory, minotaurs fight against the Knights of Takhisis, into whose hands their god Sargonnas has delivered them. In the midst of the conflict, the armies of Chaos plunge into the heart of Ansalon.

Now the minotaur warrior Aryx must unite his people and their enemy, the knights, against the monstrous servants of Chaos. If he succeeds, the two sides may forge a bond that will change Krynn for all time.

If he fails, then they will all perish.

Richard Knaac, author of the New York Times best-selling The Legend of Huma, tells this thrilling tale of the minotaurs of Krynn in the time of the Chaos War.

4 out of 5 stars A Dragonlance "Saving Private Ryan".......2003-09-16

Richard Knaak is a great storyteller. He knows how to keep the reader glued to the story and Reavers of the Blood Sea is a great example.

The characters are well fleshed out, and you can really understand why they feel the way they do when peculiar events take place.

The hero of the story, Aryx, is happy being a hired hand on a minotaur ship when he suddenly finds himself wrapped up with dark knights, Gods, war, political unrest, ominous horrors, and the possible destruction of his planet. What's a minotaur to do?

This book is not for the faint of heart. Unlike other Dragonlance novels, the battle scenes here are numerous and as graphic as they can get. I was reminded of Saving Private Ryan, but this book goes even further.

The portrayal of Sargonnas alone makes this book a worthy read. This is a good book, with a thrilling climax. Brace yourself for battle, and top notch adventure.

5 out of 5 stars The Gods Walk Amongst The Mortals..........2003-01-21

This book was definately a "Must Read"!

I have read probably 20 DL novels, and this was in the top 10. This story centers on "Ayrx", direct descendant from the legandary "Kaz", during the chaos war.

This book was a page turner, with some amazing battles, in fact, lots, and lots, of battles. The minotaurs as usual fought with themselves over the virtues of Honor, and Bravery, and as usual, there is another group trying to control them as slave solders..this time that group being the Knights of Tahkisis.

The Minotaurs are fighting to save their homeland from (1) The Knights of Tahkisis , and (2) The Chaos Creatures, and at the center of all of the fighting, and conquering, and politcs, is Aryx, the reluctant Hero thrust into a situation he doesn't want any part of, but The Gods "Sargonnas", and "Kiri-Jolith", simply won't have it without him.

The Pros:
(1)Sargonnas Appears in Mortal Flesh for quite some time, accompanied by the treacherous "Sword of Tears"
(2)Kaz Makes Several Appearences
(3)Kiri-Jolith Makes one appearance in mortal flesh, and one in a dream.
(4)There are some awesome battles
(5)Some very Memorable Characters

The Cons:
(1)Sargonnas seems a bit like a tired wimp, who leaves more questions than he answers
(2)Kiri-Jolith leaves more questions than he answers
(3)Kaz leaves more questions than he answers
(4)Doesn't it seem that gods, and the spirits of legends couldn't give a straight answer if they wanted to?

(5)Several Characters who you grow attached to throughout the story die.
(6)Throughought the book the Knights of Tahkisis keep speaking about a "Great Vision", and it is never really explained.
(7)The Minotaurs and knights keep battling the chaos creaturs, and never really win.

4 out of 5 stars Chaos all around!.......2002-10-13

As with any book about minotaurs, there's plenty of honor & violence which isn't a bad thing in such cases.

This novel has many strengths: a believeable plot twist to get thing rolling(how else did you thing Takhisis would bring these prideful beasts into line without major bloodshed?), great battle scenes(including one involving a god) & memorable characters.

I only found 2 flaws: The KOT were a little crueler than portrayed in other books & the length of the book. WOW! While page wise it's no longer than most DL books, there were a LOT of words crammed on them pages. It took me 2 & ½ days of HARD reading to finish it.

4 out of 5 stars good, but not spectacular.......2001-11-11

good beginning, but a lot of bloodshed in the book. as in, a lot of fighting, most of the book is just fighting, which gets boring. the enemy is pretty different -- they're not the shadow-wights and the fire dragons you find in Dragons of a Summer Flame, but everything works out well nonetheless. well, that's all i can say for this book..

oh yeah, sargonnas plays a part in it =)

3 out of 5 stars The rise of a hero with a twist. Nice but just too slow........2001-03-08

This is the second best in the series after Doom Brigade (so far), and Knaak's technique is good, much better than the previous three, but... Of course there is a but. It's too slow, it drags on and on without much happening. The battles are carnages, really and they get boring after the second one. These cruscateans really feel like mass-generated for massacre (which is on purpose, i suppose) but there is no tension other than "oh, boy, when will *this* battle end?" Somehow the monsters feel like the bugs in Starship Troopers without the dynamics. 20% less of everything would have been enough, because this pace is just too slow - nothing really interesting happens between two conflicts (or rather, nothing interesting *enough*).

The characters are good, though, all cliché but good, especially Rand and Aryx - the human priest with a potential and the bitter minotaur warrior. The best motif of the story is the unwilling, reluctant hero, who pretty much hates being there at the right place at the right time. Kinda destroys the whole ultra-heroic myth of its genre, and feel especially cynical in the Dragonlance setting, where previous heroes were ultra-mega-heroic. I liked this anti-heroic touch very much, especially the bitter and disturbing happy end.

Still, it's too slow at most places, so I would be hard pressed to read this book a second time.

      Book Description

      Dear Reader,

These are two of my classic historical romances, and I love both of them. When I heard that they were going to be re-published together, I was thrilled. Connor d'Arcy, Lord Earl of Iveagh, the hero of Dark of the Moon, is one of my favorite heroes ever. (I'm still a sucker for tall, dark, brooding, masterful men with a secret!) Together, he and Caitlyn O'Malley steam up the eighteenth-century Irish countryside in an epic romantic adventure that made my heart pound while I was writing it and, I hope, has the same effect on yours as you read it.

Joss, from Desire in the Sun, is another great hero -- still masterful, still sinfully handsome -- but unlike Connor, afflicted with a lady who is determined to rule him. The fireworks generated by those two will leave you breathless.

I've re-read them several times myself, just for fun (it's great to be able to go back and read and enjoy your own books, by the way) and, for me, they're still magical. I think you'll find them magical, too.

      Enjoy!

      With warmest wishes,
      Karen Robards

          5 out of 5 stars Morel.......2001-10-04

Morel invento algo.

3 out of 5 stars Una buena y entretenida novela de ficción.......2000-10-15

My english is terrible, so give me the liberty to talk about this book in spanish:

5 out of 5 stars Un libro atrapante.......2000-10-11

Altamente recomendable.

          5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......1999-08-30

Casares presents a classical theme: a man alone in an island. The involuntary escape from the social network usually opens the doors of the utopy. Here the hero tries to understand some strange things and can not avoid to get involved. The real life blocks the possibilities of happiness? Huxley in his "Island" touched this point. But Casares wrote a pure novel while Huxley mixed novel and essay. All philosophical or social thoughs are here left to the reader. Reaching the boundaries of the irreality, he kept firmly attached to the ground of reason. It is science-fiction and a high level one, not latin american phantastic realism.

5 out of 5 stars This author is a visionary.......1999-03-19

He is ahead of the future, because he gives the best description of today's virtual reality. Love is always present on his books, and so is on this one.

This book is a wonderful read for those who wish to know more about Padre Pio and his interior sufferings. The letters he wrote to his spiritual director reflect his desire to be one with God and to suffer for those less fortunate. A great model for all people, especially Franciscans.

They are filled with beauty, love, discreet discussion of his dark nights and physical agonies, and of all our struggles. Padre Pio's words are a thousand stars, not just 5. This book brings to life many of the peasant delicasies that my grandmother used to make.

Published recipes for different varieties of Torta and even Anolini en Brodo! Who knew? There are even gems that I was not familiar with like Braised Fennel (delicious).

The anecdotes were alo very enjoyable to me having grown up in the Bronx near Conti's Bakery mentioned in the Forward.

                            An excellent reference.

I had an instant flash of recognition when I picked up this book -- these were truly the recipes that I watched my grandmother and aunts make when I was a child . Someone wanted anulin in brodo? It was whipped up in an afternoon. Polenta was a staple, as was risotto, cotechino a treat, torta di patate a favorite snack food (something my children love as well, as I worked by trial and error to recreate it), pegai the food of the gods. I had despaired of ever getting my mother to show me how to make these things and feared many of them would die off with her -- then voila, Richard Sidoli's book with everything in it! These recipes are not necessarily fast or simple to prepare (of course some are, particularly the vegetables), but so marvelously full of flavor and authentic. The list of ingredients is rarely long, but freshness is essential. These dishes bear little resemblance to what most Americans view as Italian food, even northern Italian food, but they reflect an extraodinary elevation of the simple into the sublime.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Book On Northern Italian Cuisine.......2000-11-24

Having lived in Italy for 8 years myself, I learned to fully appreciate the foods of Emilia-Romagna, the region in which Parma sits. This book spolights the foods of Parma, famous for it's Parmigiano and Prosciutto di Parma. The book is well layed out, the recipes simple to prepare, and the food photos particularly inspiring. As the host of my own culinary website Italian Food Forever, I am always interested in learning more about regional Italian cuisine, and found this book pasrticularly enjoyable.

                            4 out of 5 stars A nice regional cookbook.......2000-06-08

Authentic Italian cooking is regional. This cookbook gives you a chance to "taste" Parma. The food of Parma, as presented in this cookbook, is rich and diverse. The recipes are generally easy to follow and use ingredients easily obtained by the USA cook.

I did find lapses in several recipes where a certain step or procedure was assumed (or was it unintentionally omitted?). The recipes I have done have been successful and flavorful.

I love cookbooks that give you more than just recipes: they teach you about cooking, culture, and people. While this is not as good as some of the best regional cookbooks, it is certainly does teach about the cuisine and culture of Parma (and a bit about the USA where the author lives). It is a worthy addition to the regional cookbook genre.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful dishes of traditional northern italian cuisine.......1999-11-02

This cookbook has many unique meals of northern Italy nicely written with recollections of "la familigia" and traditional italian meals. The dishes take some extra care and time, but isn't great italian food worth that?

This book is a steal! I was trying to prepare a meal for the relative of my girlfriend - they are all stiff snobbish people from a noble italian family. I was at a loss, and I hit on this book suggested to me by the chef of the restaurant "Al Curvone" in Bologna, Italy. SInce the first meal I cooked, every dinner comes straight from this cookbook, and I managed to impress them so much they are asking me - born in New Jersey! - for advice on how to cook Italian. This book is also an exceptional conversation starter, full of marvellous pictures, will teach you much more than recipees, it's a trip inside Italian culinary culture. After reading the book, you will book your next holiday in Parma.

The book is entirely a sourcebook of illustrations with no text. The illustrations are wonderful however, and highly detailed. Also, a good, well rounded collection of different types, formats and designs. I gave it three stars because I felt that I would have enjoyed knowing where the ironwork pieces illustrated are, their dates and what the use was. All in all, a good visual reference.

Agents Sydney Bristow and Marcus Dixon are hot on the trail of a drug lord who has created a mind-control drug so potent that in the wrong hands it could be one of the world's most dangerous bioweapons. Determined to halt production of the substance, the agents go undercover as dealers. Their approach proves to be successful when the drug lord invites them to his estate -- the perfect chance for Sydney to snoop around and find the location of the main lab.

But things don't go quite as planned. A government agency interferes with APO's mission; Sydney is forced to ingest a dose of the drug and commanded to turn on her APO counterparts; Dixon is taken hostage; and someone believed to be an ally turns out to be more foe than friend....

Mind Games (book 24 in the Alias series) is all about the drug trade, and a new drug on the market known as Sway. Sway does not get you high, in fact, when you take it you feel completely normal. However, whenever somebody tells you to do something, you must obey. Sydney and Dixon go undercover to try to find Sway and its creator. It is one of the better of the series, and an enjoyable couple of hours.

Sluggy Freelance is one of the greatest comics I've ever read, while most web comics get old and end up with the same jokes over and over again. Pete does a new strip every day, and fills the strips with info. Even though I've read through it all twice on hiw website I still bought and read the book. it's that good

Yet another great read by Pete Abrams, the writer of the arguably best internet comic out there. This book picks up right where the third book, "When Holidays Attack!" left off, and starts up strongly. While I myself haven't EXACTLY read the book cover-to-cover, I HAVE read every single strip online since 1997, Sluggy's debut. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes absurd, hilarious jokes involving psychotic mini-lop rabbits, an alien secretary, and a ferret that's easily distracted. And all this for a measly 13 bucks!

Sluggy Freelance is without a doubt the best comic strip on the web. This book is the 4th in the series and covers the the strips from the later-half of 1999 through January 1, 2000.

For those not familure with Sluggy Freelance, this is a sci-fi/adventure/humor comic strip. Pete spoofs many popular movies (ie: The Matrix, Aliens), television shows (ie: Star Trek, X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc.), and on occassion real-life events. Pete has managed to create a unique comic strip with deep and involving story-lines, well-developed characters, and a new twist on talking animals (a cute bunny-rabbit with a switchblade, a glock, and an attitude that would make Dirty Harry proud).

I highly recommend this and the other Sluggy books to those who love comic strips, good humor, comic books, and Harry Potter books (hey, I've seen all of you adults reading the Harry Potter books! ).

                                      Book Description

The computer is an art studio in itself, for those who know where to look and how to use it. Inspirational yet highly practical, The Digital Canvas explores contemporary computer-generated art and shows how the computer can be a flexible and surprising tool for visual experimentation. This is not an instruction manual, but the digital equivalent of a survey of techniques and materials in the fine arts, emphasizing creativity and visual thinking over rote learning. It takes the elements common to all visual art and shows how they can be deployed using digital resources.

The Digital Canvas is one of three titles this spring from Abrams Studio, our new imprint dedicated to providing artists and designers with innovative, affordable books to help them improve their skills.

It should come as no surprise to anyone these days that computers are capable of producing pretty powerful graphics images. The majority of the art you see in ads is computer generated. Mr. Raimes is a noted designer that has been using a computer as his took for many years. This book is a study in what can be done using computer techniques.

This is a produsely illustrated guide to what some of the best computer artists have done. It is not a text on how to do it. It does give a brief introduction to the equipment you will need (His comment: 'The ultimate machine for the serious graphic artise, the Power Mac G5.') as well as a brief discussion on software.

Mostly he talks about the concepts of what you can do. He talks of pixels and vectors, of letters and photos. In the final chapters he talks of getting your images in front of people using the Internet and getting your images displayed in galleries.

A great idea book for the artist, either fine or commercial.

                                        Product Description

An expanded version of the 1st edition, with new art, more encounters, and guidlines on personalizing the information for a referee's own campaign. "Right off the top, we recommend the Gamesmaster run no more than three, and preferably one or two, players at a time in cities. With three or more, someone is always growing bored while the Gamesmaster and some other player are haggling prices, gambling, looking for work, etc. These tables are designed to be used every ten to fifteen minutes of real time (or more often if things are lagging). "No Encounter" is built into the table to reflect the likely frequency of nothing of note occurring near or to the players' Characters in a particular area of the city. A larger number of encounters will be visual, not directly involving the Characters, unless they decide to join in. We recommend that if the players are involved in something, the Gamesmaster shouldn't interfere (too much) by throwing encounters at them. A significant number of encounters read, "...accidental bump...". This represents the jostling a Character would receive in a crowded street. This teaches players not to attack everyone on sight and keeps thieves from being quite so conspicuous. Another frequent encounter is "....recognises Character.. .mistakenly.. .correctly." This is where a non-player Character (NPC) either thinks he or she knows the Character or did in fact know him previously (even if the player doesn't "remember"). It could be an old buddy, sweetheart, rival, employer, slave, sidekick, or anyone else the Gamesmaster can think of, from somewhere in the Character's past. Or, the NPC could be mistaken, but convince the player they once knew each other. Or... As you can see, the possibilities are many..."

                                        Product Description

Getting your children involved in the kitchen at a young age is an exciting way to spend time together and teach them about nutrition, mathematics, measurements, history, and different types of food. Gadgetology makes it fun; your children will love using grown-up gadgets from an apple peeler to a whisk to play games, try simple recipes, make crafts, and conduct fun experiments. A box grater is handy for shredding mozzarella to make Super Easy Lasagna, but it s also great for shredding crayons onto wax paper to be ironed into "stained glass." You can also turn leftover walnut shells cracked with a nutcracker for Fudgy Walnut Brownies into perfect miniature sailboats. In Gadgetology, Pam Abrams offers so many creative, stimulating, and safe uses for everyday gadgets that the kitchen will become an educational playground for your whole family.

5 out of 5 stars So much fun - for you and your child.......2007-04-24

This book is so much fun to use, and is gorgeous to look at. Having projects that you can do with your child by just going to the kitchen and using tools and food you already own is such a fabulous idea. So many project books for kids require items you have to go out and get especially for the project --- not very convenient for spur of the moment fun. This book makes it easy to be spontaneous. And you'll have as much fun as your child! My eight year old and three year old both love it.

                                        I highly recommend this book!

An overview of American sports betting, done in a bit of an academic style. The author is not particularly familiar with the inner workings of the industry it seems, and is looking at it from mostly a historical and sociological point of view, so only get this is that is the sort of book you are after, it really isn't that good.

It's a great town, not big - but that gives you a chance to make a mark in your home town without being some uber-character. Lots of detail, good maps.

Only real downside is they only did one town in the series (although there is Cities), and there are a couple of typos.

Good production, good maps, good illos, fun substance. No real game stats - but that's the point. You can use it for anything you can add the location and culture to.

A good example for modern publishers and writers too.

This puzzle book should be on every child's bookshelf. The chosen pictures are a great selection of Escher's work. The book is sturdy and the idea to create room for the puzzlepieces to be stored inside is marvelous. It is a great way to introduce Art to children and I hope to see more books of the same kind.

This book stands out as one of my favorites from my childhood. I am 27 now and buying a copy for my daughter. When I remember reading this story as a child I can still feel the wonder and magic that filled me.

4 out of 5 stars Back to the Enchanted Forest.......2001-10-15

I loved the Enchanted Forest and the Enchanted Kingdom when I had them as a child. The pictures are beautiful and if a child likes fancy coloring books this is a great choice, espescially for girls who will love the tale of an enchanted princess who falls in love with a handsome prince. The hidden images are cleverly worked into the designs and some of them take a great deal of time to pick them out. I am so glad to see that these books were published again so that I can buy them for my neices!

                                          Book Description

Over a remarkable career that spanned more than sixty years, Abram Games was a leading voice in 20th-century British graphic design. A modernist who used graphically charged symbols to catch the eye, he designed posters, signage, packaging, and other ephemera for such giants as the BBC, Shell, the Financial Times, Guinness, and the London Underground. During World War II, he was England's official war poster designer, a position from which he oversaw the design and production of hundreds of posters calling on Britons to stand fast and support the Allied troops.
Abram Games: His Life and Work is the first monograph on this design legend whose work helped to define the look of modern English culture.
