Book Description
A bluesy new novel from a favorite young Southern writer, Seek the Living "is a deeply wise and sensual rumination on the hard secrets of love and family" (Stewart O'Nan). Since her mother's death, Joan Patee has kept the peace between her wayward brother, Denny, and her strong-willed father. At her own crossroadsher marriage strained and her desire to have a child overpoweringJoan discovers that Denny has become embroiled in a perilous moneymaking scheme involving artifacts in unmarked graves possibly dating back to the Civil War. As the hidden history of Joan's town collides with her own hidden history of a passionate affair, secrets threaten to devastate everyone closest to her heart.

Not Just Popular Fiction..........2005-07-24
As I read Warlick's "Seek the Living," I was reminded of Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" and the ways in which Faulkner's characters reveal complexities that reach beyond the telling of a good tale to ring out the potential recklessness and restlessness within us all. The universality of Warlick's work; how she creates moments of vast poignancy; how she captures the tensions of self/family/place; how she masterfully generates passion and longing for what may be, what was, and what could have been; all of this sets Warlick's novel apart as a work of art - true literature. Poetic and introspective, the voices and experiences of Warlick's characters at once encourage us to question the certainty of and to embrace the ambiguity within our own lives. This novel will carry you away.
Well Worth Reading.......2005-05-02
I've been a fan of Ashley Warlick since her debut novel, THE DISTANCE FROM THE HEART OF THINGS. One of my favorite novels of recent years.
Her follow up, THE SUMMER AFTER JUNE was quite good, if not up to her first.
Now, comes her third novel, SEEK THE LIVING.
Once again, Warlick proves she is one of the strongest Southern writers working today. There are many paragraphs that you read, then have to just reread they are so beautifully written.
There really isn't much in the way of story here, following a married woman in South Carolina, dealing with her brother, her father and various childhood friends. Up until the second half of the novel, not much happens. But, you really don't mind you are so caught up in the writing.
As far as her previous work, I don't think this is up there with her first, but I think I enjoyed it more than SUMMER.
Well worth reading.
nuance and wisdom.......2005-02-18
Ashley Warlick writes sentences that are as smooth as silk and as sharp as a glass shard. And these wonderful sentences lead us into another of her Southern families with heartaches, secrets, joys, feints, and resolutions. As always in Warlick's books, she deciphers the body language of her characters with an unerring and subtle wisdom.
One test of a novel is to put the first and last words together to see what note they ring about the novel: SEEK THE LIVING's would be "when . . . land". And yes, this is a novel about the pressures of the past and its shaping and settling in the present.
We all know her characters; we meet folks just like them on the streets and in the strip malls everyday. Now we know them better.
thought-provoking and stylish.......2005-01-30
I would add to the other positive reviews that this book has some good humor, especially in the middle, as well as suspense and surprise, especially towards the end. Although it reads and entertains as well as an airport store kind of book, it has much more depth and artistry. Warlick has an exceptional ability to evoke a mood or arouse a feeling in creative ways, with the barest of small but precise touches. She's skillful at using ambiguity effectively in dialogue and character development. Her characters are not ordinary or typical people, but nor are they unbelievable; at a party with a cross-section of society, they're the select ones you'd catch yourself watching from a distance now and then during the night. I didn't want to reach the end of the book, and I found myself contemplating the characters long after I had.
Great talent.......2005-01-26
Ashley Warlick's newest novel Seek the Living is her latest addition to a body of work that continues to showcase an incredible talent from a wise and deft storyteller. Joan Patte joins Warlick's previous creations, Mavis Black (Distance from the Heart of Things) and Lindy Jain (Summer After June) as a woman fully entrenched in her family and her place, for better or worse, as she struggles to simultaneously live with the heartaches of her past and desires for her future. Joan is, appropriately, an archivist who charts the minute details of her state (South Carolina) for a private foundation. She is the cornerstone of her family, a consequence of her mother's death, and finds herself facilitating a tenous relationship between her father and brother. Joan longs for her sweet, patient, and frequently absent husband with whom she is having difficulty conceiving a child. Along with mourning her mother's death, she is still haunted by a former lover whose death may have interrupted a completely different course for Joan's life. Ultimately, Joan's strength lies in her ability to visit the graves of her past without falling in. Warlick's prose is honest and clean, balancing darkness and light as only Southern writers can. Buy this book.

MUST READ Romantic Adventure!! Couldn't put down! .......2006-09-29
This was a truly great read. It's about a forty-something woman named Maggie, who decides she needs a change of direction in her life, and heads out on a cruise. The adventures that befall her, and the colorful crew of characters he meets onboard make this a wonderfully vivid and engaging story. It's absolutely impossible to put down, overflowing with romantic intrigue, and offering a vicarious thrill ride through the exotic ports-of-call in Mexico. Highly recommended!
Fun reading....... even for a guy.......2006-09-15
I read the book for the first time. not one curse word and the story is based on cruise adventures of a lady I know personally.
It is a romance novel but with a sense of adventure. The book had interest that kept me reading. The book makes you feel you are there when it happens. I started and finished it two nights. The book was good reading.. I know about most of the characters by talking to Mrs Kaye a lot.
The only problem is the publisher as he printed copies are in poor quality .......but worth it to read a great novel
stunning message that the passengers have fun but beware.......2006-08-21
Cruise Ship Diaries
Irene Magers Gingold
Publish America, May 2006
ISBN: 142411618X
In New York forty-four year old married trice but now single Margaret Maghpye is stunned when after twelve years at the firm she loses her position as a paralegal at Goodman, Barr & Noune. Her boss Laura Noune unfairly blames Margaret for poor research for a terrible day at court. Stunned and with no one to tie her down, Margaret decides she needs to escape her troubles and the wintry teen temperature of Manhattan so uses her meager savings to go on a Mexican cruise though she knows she cannot afford this financially. She prays this will lift her out of her growing depression.
She flies to San Diego where she boards the Mexican Star for seventeen days and nights of what Margaret hopes is uplifting fun. However, instead of an upbeat time, Margaret feels the sexual shenanigans on board too overwhelming and the port stop at Acapulco too commercial. However, the topper occurs when an elderly passenger Francine Wirth is being tossed from the ship at a remote Mexican hospital because she suffered an injury, which cannot be treated by the ship's doctor; this stuns Margaret (and readers). On the plus side she meets and is attracted to passenger Michael Sanders, though he seems withdrawn. While he has a different agenda for being on this excursion, he cannot stop himself from wanting to spend time with Margaret.
The sea cruise romance between the middle age couple is handled deftly as the two protagonists fear love, but cannot help themselves stop the attraction. However, what makes the CRUSIE SHIP DIARIES different than the myriad of ship romance novels is the insight into the downside of cruises in which the lines are held unaccountable once they cross into international waters as the Francine incident apparently is genuine. Irene Magers Gingold provides a delightful and charming contemporary with quite a stunning message that the passengers have fun but beware.

Product Description
This is a beauty. Heavy glossy paper with tons of b/w photos taken at the turn of the last century, a pullout map, and the adventures of the cruise around the world in the ship the Cleveland, with each city a different chapter. Entrancing. Great deal, recommended.Very heavy creamy semi-gloss paper give this a rich expensive feel. Rare and extravagant.

issues of gender roles.......2006-08-05
It's not your typical science fiction anthology. Rather, you might treat it as sitting on the fringes between SF and maybe sociology. The book is inspired by Tiptree's memorable fiction of the 70s and 80s. It looks at issues of gender roles and the expectations of these by a society.
Several of the contributors are very prominent, like Ursula le Guin, and Joe Haldemann. The editors' choice of Haldemann's work as the best is probably correct. But guess what? You of course should then read his full story, and not confine yourself to the excerpt in this anthology.

Earth Medicine and
Shamanic Experience
Those of us who live in the so-called “advanced” modern world have been educated to use our minds and encouraged to satisfy our physical needs. But in so doing, we have become isolated from the very essence of our existence as individuals--our own spirit. In Shamanic Spirit Kenneth Meadows introduces Shamanics, his spiritual science of living, which recognizes the primacy of the spirit and acknowledges that spirit is inherent in all living beings and life forms. Shamanics is a practical way of becoming aware of our multi-dimensional reality and using that awareness to cultivate and refine the spirit within.
Using the symbolic structure of the Medicine Wheel--which helps us establish a sense of direction, extend perception, and examine relationships--Meadows presents 33 hands-on experiential exercises that help readers discover the truth about themselves. His approach also draws upon and integrates universal shamanic concepts from such regions as the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, India, China, and Polynesia to show readers how to release their dormant potentials, generate creativity, and meet the challenges of their lives with confidence and self-assurance.

not focused enough.......2005-01-29
this book seems to be drawing from many different traditions in something of a surface manner when it comes to energy - the meridians, the chakras, some chi kung, even the taoist inner smile popularized by master mantak chia, runes, the I ching...what else can be thrown in? Seriously speaking, this is a good book. It is just not a very shamanic-focused book. It actually seems to be concerned with presenting some basic chi kung concepts and related practices from around the world, and identifying anything related to these as shamanism. If this is the case, why not try out the root of chinese chi kung by yang jwing-ming, and get the undiluted real deal? Or energetic anatomy by mark rich, or the book of changes and the unchanging truth by hua-ching ni? I have not read the earlier books by meadows, but I bet they are more shamanism than this later book.
Wonderful.......2004-10-19
As one who has been apprenticed to a shamanic path with heart, I can see in Meadows book, although it is just the beginning of a shamanics education, a depth of understanding that shows true "knowing." This is important stuff for the West.
Unfortunately, there is no bridge to shamanics from the popular teachings of Christianity, or Judaism, or any of the other mainstream spiritual paths. Someone who comes from one of these other spiritual traditions into "shamanics" will have to discover the obstacles to understanding implanted by their conditioned views of Reality and themselves. It would be very helpful to many from these traditions to have an early bridge chapter which prepares a reader for the assumptions and beliefs that he is going to have to challenge as he undertakes the shamanics teachings. That chapter is not here. But this doesn't lessen the excellence of what is here. It just means we've got to be prepared to leap from a high place into a deep pool without knowing how chilled the water or deep the bottom. Such is life! The Unknown is the only place to be to feel alive.
Reflecting on Ken's book, it saddens me what Mankind in the West has already lost in embracing religious traditions which turn away from the Earth and the Sacredness of All That Is for a mechanical and deadened view of Life Itself. It often takes a great deal of courage for someone from those other traditions to take a step into the Unknown of the material in this book. For those who need a challenge, hear mine! This book will open your mind and heart.
Good work, Ken! And thanks for all your other works as well. These works are a real Giveaway of Love by both you and the Medicine to the people of the World.

Not what I expected!.......2005-12-21
If you have a large food processor and an interest in stocking your freezer with Anderson's required "mixes", (necessary in order to use many of her recipes), then you'll probably like this book. I have neither the food processor nor the freezer space, so the book was a big disappointment to me. I've always disliked cookbook authors who expect you to do everything exactly the way they do, with no other options. Unfortunately, Anderson is one of those authors. The mixes you have to prepare ahead of time may shorten the actual preparation time for a recipe, but it also requires you to have time to stock up on these mixes in advance. Why would I want to allot time to prepare several of these mixes in advance and stuff them into my freezer when I don't even know which recipes will take my fancy on any given day? And all of this assumes I can afford to go out and buy a large, expensive food processor! Most of these recipes give you no other option. Very disappointing.
Fun to Watch; Better to Eat.......2005-04-12
We got a copy of Quick Loaves and my wife started a list of required recipe items: very interesting. Then I got to watch the preparation process: mysterious and intriguing. Finally, I was able to enjoy the results of the process, starting with the Little Thai Turkey Loaves (excellent) and finishing with Dense Dark Chocolate Loaf (superb). The entire process was entertaining and the end result well worth the wait. And we still have plenty of made-ahead dough for future meal installments from Quick Loaves. We have many of Jean Anderson's cookbooks, and she never disappoints.
Fast and Fabulous.......2005-04-10
This cookbook is a fabulous new tool in my quest to add interesting, delicious and healthful meals to my repertoire. The best part is that it is so easy. Every recipe I have made, from the Little Thai Turkey loaves to the Dense Dark Chocolate Loaf has been a breeze and resulted in rave reviews. The additive-free mixes are a bonus. In this busy world, this is a must-have cookbook for anyone who loves to cook, eat well and never has enough time. It is on the top of my gift-giving list for those I love.
Great Shortcuts for Frequent Baker.......2005-03-26
`Quick Loaves' is by Jean Anderson, one of our foremost authors of cookbooks who has achieved a high distinction by high volume on better than average books, especially with `The Food of Portugal' and `The American Century Cookbook'. This book, like `Process This!' and `Micro Ways' addresses one aspect of fast and easy cooking by the amateur home cook who wants just a little more depth than what you can get from Rachael Ray's excellent collections of recipes.
For starters, I think this book is superior to `Process This!' if only because I think that while the food processor is a major investment in a high maintenance appliance, this book requires investing in no special equipment. And, even if you do not yet have some basic baking pans, some inexpensive equipment can be had for less than twenty dollars ($20). And yet, Ms. Anderson may have painted herself into a corner with this book by limiting her audience to those who like to bake things often at home but who do not want to spend a lot of effort doing it.
Ms. Anderson's primary theme in this book is in the preparation of home brewed mixes for making baking a wide range of both sweet and savory breads, cakes, meatloaves, and veggie loaves and puddings. In doing this, she has offered advice on good baking technique that agrees with simply everything I have ever read about baking. She has even offered the first advice I have read on the new lines of silicone plastic bakeware, with advice on how to work with them and on the most widely respected brands. I have not even seen any word about these things in `Cooks Illustrated' yet.
I bake fairly often compared to most men, yet I do not bake more than once every two weeks, and, over half of what I bake involves yeast breads or pastry, but Ms. Anderson's book does not address yeast bread baking in detail (there are some quick yeast breads, but I subscribe to the well established doctrine popularized by Peter Reinhart that the best yeast risen breads are those which rise slowly) and she does not deal with classic French pastry crust doughs. One of the greatest ironies is that while Ms. Anderson's first mix is remarkably similar to the dough used to make buttermilk biscuits, she strongly recommends a standard all purpose flour such as Pillsbury or King Arthur rather than a soft southern flour such as White Lily. And yet, White Lily is my preferred flour for making buttermilk biscuits, which takes up about 20% of all my baking activity. So what is a fella to do with this book?
This excellently priced trade paperback has five chapters beginning with a short chapter on `Basics' which agree in every way with everything I have ever read about good baking technique. This should be no surprise whatsoever from someone who has written over 20 cookbooks. This book presents the eight basic `make ahead' ingredients, two of which are the cornerstones of all baking in Chapters 2 and 3. One of the most important facts about the flour mixes is their shelf life. Both are good for about two months in the freezer. The big question for a reader of this book is `Will I make two or more recipes using these mixes before they expire. I know I cannot be sure of doing this, even when I bake about once every two weeks. The four remaining chapters are all about the same size and deal with four different kinds of loaves.
Chapter 2 is `Quickbreads and Coffeecakes plus a Few Fast Yeast Breads'. The poster child for this chapter is a spicy version of Irish Soda Bread with nutmeg, sugar, and currants. A close relative to this is a very attractive looking recipe for Welsh Speckled Bread' with some strong orange flavoring from rind and marmalade.
Chapter 3 is `Cakes, Pudding Loaves and Other Desserts'. The flagship recipe in this chapter is a `simple yellow cake with a brown sugar and coconut topping. Shortbread cookies are in this chapter along with crumb cakes, and a flourless Bavarian Hazelnut torte. This last recipe is a great exemplar of a family of central European flourless recipes, my favorite of that is the Hungarian walnut cake that uses a meringue rather than whipped cream for its lift. One important aside here is that the author is simply gaga over hazelnut recipes, so if you are a big hazelnut fan, I suggest you ignore everything else I have said in this review and rush right out to buy a copy of this book.
Chapter 4 deals with meatloaves. I know there are people who really like to try a lot of different meatloaf recipes. I am not one of these people, but my mother is. I am perfectly happy with my basic `Cooks Illustrated / The Best Recipe' version which comes out just right every time I make it. But, if you are like my mother, I really suggest you get this book, along with all the hazelnut addicts out there. The first recipe is for an `Easy Italian Meatloaf' which cuts time from the prep work by including a prepackaged pasta sauce. The second recipe includes the same prepared marinara sauce. The third recipe includes a prepared barbecue sauce. Since I prefer to not use such prepared sauces, and since I am quite happy with my old familiar recipe, this chapter holds no charm for me.
Chapter 5 offers the comfort of a meatloaf to vegetarians who eschew beef, pork or anything else that travels on four hooves. The Mushroom and Pecan loaf opener is attractive even to me who is especially fond of anything with mushrooms.
This is really a very good book and if any selling point appeals to you, then I recommend it with no reservations. I recommend it especially to anyone who likes to bake a wide variety of things but who welcomes shortcuts.
Who doesn't love a meat loaf?.......2005-03-19
We love loaves in our house, both for family and guests. This is the best collection of meat loaves and dazzling variations we have ever seen. And they 're easy, some very exotic, even dessert and bread loaves. We must have about 10 of Jean Anderson's cookbooks in our kitchen. (She is not related!) After a good many years, we never even bother to look at anyone else's.

An excellent source for securing a "real" value for collectible oil lamps. If someone has the number of the lamp from one of the three books, you don't even need the original book to find the value of the lamp.

Book Description
This volume provides a new English translation and commentary on Josephus' Judean Antiquities 8-10 in which he retells the history of Israel from the time of the latter divided monarchy down through the exilic period. The commentary devotes particular attention to Josephus' use of his many biblical sources for this period, e.g., the books of Kings, Chronicles, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Jonah and Nahum and Daniel. It also examines the question of the textual forms of these books used by him, and notes parallels to his presentation in both ancient Jewish and Greco-Roman literature. The book is intended primarily for biblicists and scholars of ancient Judaism.
