Book Description

Reimagining the black neighborhood of his youth Homewood, Pittsburgh -Wideman creates a dazzling and evocative milieu. From the wild and uninhibited 1920s to the narcotized 1970s, "he establishes aamythological and symbolic link between character and landscape, language and plot, that in the hands of a less visionary writer might be little more than stale sociology" (New York Times Book Review).

Sent for you yesterday, and here you come today.

It only makes sense that one of the main themes of John Edgar Wideman's Pen/Faulkner Award winning novel, Sent For You Yesterday, should find expression in a song. Any novel written with the musical lyricism and jive, stream of consciousness language Wideman employs is attempting to bridge the gap between music and literature. Wideman takes the blues out of the jazz clubs and places it squarely on the page for the readers' benefit. Sent For You Yesterday is a marvel to read, not only for its eloquent exposition of urban African American culture, but also simply for the beauty of Wideman's words.

If James Joyce had been born in inner city Pittsburgh instead of Dublin, his writing would most likely have sounded much like Wideman's. Wideman shifts flawlessly from one characters' thoughts to the next, detailing the exclusion felt by the albino Brother in an all black community, to the lunacy of Samantha, a mother of over 10 children who loses her mind when one of her children burns to death. World War II clouds over this novel in the same way World War I is the ever-present unmentioned in Woolf's To The Lighthouse. Wideman draws on the modernists, but in a completely original manner. The lives he shows us are real and hard, their importance obviously apparent but unbearably tragic. Through it all, Wideman's characters persevere, suffering through life, even as they acknowledge it will only get worse. In their brave embrace of life, there is a profound sublimity. One consolation is music - it is also their heritage for people otherwise without possessions.

Any discussion of the characters in Sent For You Yesterday must begin by first acknowledging that the Pittsburgh area of Homewood is the main character. Though he is wanted by the police for sleeping with a white woman, Albert Wilkes' has to return to Homewood. The place draws him back. He has traveled for seven years but only in Homewood does he feel at home. His re-arrival in Homewood frames the novel's first section, while the rest of the book focuses on Lucy Tate, the narrator's Uncle Carl, and Lucy's surrogate brother called only Brother, and their relative inability to leave Homewood at all. The gravity of the town seems to possess the work's human characters. Homewood exerts a force originating out of its inescapable history; even as its houses crumble, its people drink and drug themselves to death, and poverty comes to dominate like a despot, Lucy, Carl, and Brother stay fixed, attached to each other, but more so to the place. The only of the self-termed "Three Musketeers" who figures out a way to leave Homewood is Brother and he does so through suicide, symbolically mauled by the town's lone link to the outside world, a freight train.

Wideman presents his characters not as emblems pleading for our sympathy, but in a matter of fact manner that seems to say: take them as they are or don't take them at all, either way, your opinion isn't going to mean much to them. Even as he chronicles the socioeconomic decline from one generation to the next, his characters never turn to external factors to lay blame for their misfortunes. As Carl eloquently recalls about his temporary drug addiction, he enjoyed crack and shot up because of the pleasure. It was his choice, no one else's. There was no coercion, just as it was his decision to stop. While the oppressive presence of white people hangs over all, penetrating the character's psyches as if by osmosis, Wideman doesn't succumb to angry finger pointing. Wideman suggests that the horrendous level of disrespect with which white people treat African Americans has bored into the black mind to such a degree, that the residents of Homewood have internalized and eventually accepted the idea that they are somehow lesser than. It has become so second-hand, the idea isn't even perceptible anymore. It's just a part of life, like Carl's pot belly or the shared affinity for Iron City beer. And it is the subtlety of this presentation of the ramifications of segregation and racism that makes it so effective. How can characters ask for empathy when they can't even realize they would ever deserve it? The bluesy expression "been down so long don't even know what's up," floats between the lines of Sent For You Yesterday like the lingering echo of a melancholy piano chord.

Wideman justly won the Pen/Faulkner Award for Sent For You Yesterday. His innovative utilization of "authentically black" language provides the dialect and characters with a respect they never afforded themselves. Wideman takes the tuneful acoustics of street slang and transforms the speech into high art. Not since Faulkner has a specific time and place been depicted so accurately and with such heartfelt compassion. Wideman has saved a culture and past from oblivion by rendering it as adeptly as he manages in this novel. In a present when Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent are the most ubiquitous signs of black culture, Wideman reminds all Americans that African Americans have existed and will continue to do so as an incredibly cohesive community and one that we should honor with more than Senate apologies. Wideman illustrates an unshakeable integrity pulsating in a dereliction few of us have or will ever be forced to witness. Whether Homewood's characters comprehend it or not, they are resilient, and far from pity, should receive only our admiration for not bowing to life's burdens. As for Wideman, he should continue to receive praise, as an achievement such as Sent For You Yesterday, like the world it defines, must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars James Joyce in America.......2000-02-21

Wideman's constant changing point of view and temporal setting and reminds this reader very much of James Joyce Ulysses; this work is a tour of the consciousness of an entire American Black community spanning several generations in the mid 20th century. The vivid poetry of Black American English speaks immediately of characters predicaments, desires, and dreams. If white folks want to begin to understand black folks, they might take a sip of this fine wine.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic.......1999-01-29

What I love the most about Wideman is the way in which he evokes the sense of time and lost. His writing style reminds me of a cross between Jean Toomer and Fyodor Dostoeyevski, also two of my favorite writers. This novel takes place in the town of Homewood, PA. It is a predominately black working class neighborhood. Wideman makes Homewood feel so alive and yet slowly dying at the same time. If you've ever had a sense of lost time, lost experiences, lost something but you don't know what, than this is the book to read. No other writer has been able to evoke those feelings within me more than Wideman. (p.s.- As if Wideman wasn't good enough, be on the look out for his multi-talented daughter Jamila in the future!)

Best Wishes,

Rodney Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Musical Excursion Into a Haunted Past.......1998-12-08

I chose this book at random while looking for literature for my students.I found the book brilliant. The author's use of imagery is captivating and the story teaches you its style as you go along. In the beginning the lack of quotation marks is frustrating but then you fall into the rhythm of the voices and you cannot stop reading. By the last third, I was snarling at people who dared to try to interrupt me while I breathlessly pawed through page after page of lyrical poetry and metaphor disguised as a prose work.

3 out of 5 stars Rogers Still Has It.......2006-02-22

Headstrong Madison Westcott would much rather live out her days painting than attend her silly coming-out ball, but she agrees to attend the ball after her aunt Kendra, visiting from Jamaica, suggests she display one of her paintings. When the nude portrait of herself creates a scandal, Madison is whisked off to Jamaica with her aunt, beginning an exciting new life. Kendra had come to London with two male companions: the detestable Jefford Harris and the handsome, charming Lord Carlton Thomblin. Madison develops a crush on Thomblin, despite warnings from her aunt that he is not the man for her, yet it is Jefford Harris she can't seem to get out of her mind.

On their arrival in Jamaica, Jefford is met rather enthusiastically by his longtime mistress, Chantal. Madison is eaten up with jealousy, which she denies, while also learning that Jefford is Kendra's illegitimate son. Although he had missed Chantal while in London, upon his return to Jamaica Jefford finds he has tired of his mistress, his thoughts consumed with the infuriating Madison. Jefford and Madison manage to avoid each other most of the time, until the night a fiery revolt sweeps across the island and they must flee for their lives, and they discover hidden passion for one another while hiding overnight in a cave.

Having been burned out of their Jamaican home, Lady Kendra Moran takes her entire household to her properties in India, which are far grander. There she reunites with her old lover, the raja, who is also Jefford's father. More surprises are in store when Madison finds out she's pregnant, and Kendra is thrilled. Madison also learns that her favored aunt is terminally ill, but that doesn't stop her from fighting a marriage to Jefford every step of the way. The two of them just can't seem to get along, except for when passion flares between them, but eventually, they find their way and live happily ever after.

Though a far cry from Sweet Savage Love or Wicked Loving Lies, written at Rogers' peak, this was a compelling read. Rosemary just isn't putting her characters through the depths of hell that she used to, though this book was much better than some of the rather flat stories she has delivered over the past 10 years. Her characters are still quite colorful, and she still depicts locales with rich description. A reader looking for high adventure might be a bit disappointed, but as a straight historical romance, this one is a winner.

Well Rosemary, you did it again!!!! I always wait for a new book to come out and usually I am never disappointed with it!!! You took me away again to unknown places and adventures. Easy reading from the first page to the last exciting moment. Now I have to wait a year for your next book..Well, I guess I'll have to read some of your past books for the hundredth time. Well worth my time, Thank you Rosemary.

5 out of 5 stars Where have you been Rosemary Rogers??.......2004-12-07

One of my most favorite authors - and with this book I so remember how much I love her characters and depth of story. The story of Madison & Jeffrod is one where you find yourself screaming throughout "don't be so stubborn listen to your heart!!" Thankfully one of them FINALLY does. These two are headstrong individuals with so much passion you cannot help but want them to find true love. The heartfelt romance of Kendra's also contributed to the emotional depth of this book. For me, this book was one I just could not get enough of, could not put down and wished it would have gone on forever! No wonder I remember Rosemary Rogers as one of my favorite authors!! Only wish she would write MORE!!

          3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-11-30

Another bland book from Ms. Rogers. This one, although set in exotic places, just doesn't have the excitement and larger-than-life characters of her earlier works. Guess there will never be another book like the Steve Morgan-Ginny Brandon series. This book was very predictable and about as unexciting as ice cream. Don't bother to waste your money on this mediocre book that could have been at least a 4-star had the characters been more fully developed.

4 out of 5 stars intriguing Victorian romance .......2004-11-14

In 1888, artist Madison Westcott is painting a man in her room when her mother insists she come out to greet her Aunt Kendra visiting from Jamaica for the first time in years. Madison has her model Cundo climb out her window to avoid a scandal, but he is hurt when dogs chase him. Kendra's companion Jefford Harris takes Madison to task for risking Cundo's life and writes her off as spoiled.

Not long afterward at a debutant ball, Madison reveals a nude portrait she painted of herself. Her family is appalled and to keep the scandal somewhat under control, Kendra takes her niece back to Jamaica with her. When the island erupts into revolution, Jefford takes his two female companions to safety in India where Jefford and Madison fall in love, but danger from a maniac with a diabolical plan endangers the trio.

Around the World riding on the crest of love, JEWEL OF MY HEART is an intriguing Victorian romance with exotic locales to freshen up the exciting story line. Madison seems a bit foolish, pampered and immature, but under Kendra's nurturing, Jefford's love, and the danger they face she turns into a strong caring adult. The villain is a delightful rogue who readers will hiss at, but though incredibly written seems to pale when compared with events in Jamaica and India. Still this strong cast in several locations bring alive the late nineteenth century as Rosemary Rogers writes a rousing read.

From BooklistMadison Wescott's mother is trying to convince her errant daughter to attend her coming-out ball, but Madison would rather paint than do her duty to late nineteenth-century London society. When Madison's mysterious aunt Kendra arrives from Jamaica, Madison follows her aunt's suggestion and displays one of her paintings, but so objectionable is her art, Madison is sent to Jamaica. Madison is happy to leave the restrictions of London society and get to know her aunt better. And two gentlemen are in tow: Jefford Harris, a taciturn but helpful man who constantly criticizes Madison, and Lord Thomblin, a charming rogue who captures Madison's fancy, much to her aunt's consternation. But Jamaica is only a temporary stop once an uprising forces the English plantation owners to journey to India, where the sparks fly and Madison finally sees where her heart really lies. "The dream of space travel is glorious, the contemporary reality is dismal," remarked William Sims Bainbridge in 1976. But nowhere was it more glorious than on the front page of The Eagle, a weekly British boys' paper, in Frank Hampson's visionary comic serial, Dan Dare. The Eagle was published from 1950 through 1969 by the Christian Publicity Society and Hampson also drew a never-rivaled story comic of the life of Jesus of Nazareth called "The Road of Courage." As he says in an interview in this volume, Hampson wasn't religious, but he felt that "young people were getting a rough deal in those years so soon after the end of the war...I wanted to give them something that made the future more hopeful, in human terms."

Hampson gave unstintingly, creating one of the most visually arresting comics ever, until the Eagle was taken over by corporate raiders, and the job fell to his friend, an equally fine artist, Frank Bellamy. As with Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, Dan Dare spun off numerous toys highly valued by collectors (Young, Duin and Richardson devote an entire chapter to Dan Dare in their book, Blast Off!: Rockets, Robots, Ray Guns, and Rarities from the Golden Age of Space Toys, Dark Horse Books), and in its heyday, 60,000 junior spacemen pledged their loyalty in the Eagle Club.

Titan Books, UK, has launched an ambitious publishing project to reprint all the color, two-page Dan Dare cliff-hanger strips in beautiful 9" X 12" hard cover, coffee table hardbacks. "The Red Moon Mystery" was the second Eagle serial, after "Pilot of the Future," and was originally published from vol. 2 #26 - vol. 3 #11 of the Eagle. As comic artist Cliff Claremont (X-Men) writes in the introduction, the weekly arrival of Dan Dare was one of the few things to lighten the gloom and doom of post-war Britain. As such, many now- grown fans will welcome his return. Amazon's low price makes Dan Dare the gift book of the year, and a new generation may find themselves captivated by Hampson's visions of the future.

                          Book Description

Today’s busy lifestyles make it impractical to plan the kind of multicourse feasts one might wish. An easy and exciting solution is the venerable dutch oven pot. In this follow-up to their successful The Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook, Sharon Kramis and Julie Kramis Hearne show off the many virtues of this kitchen essential. The dutch oven excels at everything from simmering to baking, working equally well on the stovetop and in the oven. The book begins with an informative history of the pot, along with a discussion of various cooking methods. From there it moves into such mouthwatering dishes as Slow Cooked Pork with Smoky Barbeque Sauce and Slaw, Smothered Chicken with Sautéed Morels, Fresh Vegetable Estouffade, Northwest Bouillabaisse, and Ms. Kate’s Spoon Bread. Whether using a well-used and blackened garage-sale find, or the latest celery-green item from La Creuset, contemporary chefs can satisfy the most exacting palates with this entertaining cookbook.

While this book has great sounding recipes, not many of them are practical -- I would only use them if I wanted something real special (and different.)

This recipe book is great, since receiving it I bet I have tried at least 5 of the recipes and loved them all. I'm so glad I ordered it.

This is one of the best cookbooks that I have ever purchased. The recipes are simple to follow and do not call for exotic ingredients. The recipes we tried have all come out excellent and I wouldn't adjust any of the ingredients, cooking times or amounts. Well worth the money! It looks like it will get plenty of use in our house.

My mother gave me this book knowing my interest in swedish cuisine and cooking in general.
It is two books in one; side one is scandinavian cuisine with the majority of recipes swedish. Side two is dutch cuisine. Here you have two under-appreciated european cuisines that don't seem like a good fit but really are in many ways.

I love this type of book because a hobby of mine is learning more about and preparing dishes from those cuisines that are not as well known or popular. Everyone likes italian food and french cooking techniques are standard but eastern and northern european foods have a lot to offer.

A particular strength of this volume are the fish recipes given that scandinavia the netherlands are geographically bound to the sea. Different flavor combinations for marinades and sauces adorn fresh and cured fish and there is a lot more here than pickled herring. Fatty fishes like herring, trout, salmon or white fleshed fishes like cod or haddock are prepared many different delicious ways. I especially love the dutch for baked cod and potatoes so simple yet so delicious..

If you love meat and potatoes this volume is full of great recipes for that as well. You may want to spice up the dishes a bit as they are bland at times but the basic ingrediants are terrific. This book was the first time i discovered a dish called beef lindstrom a swedish beef patty with mashed potato as a filler it has become one of my favorites. Try that with a norwegian brown onion sauce How about a swedish christmas ham with dutch raisin sauce?

In this book you will find dozens of recipes you have never tried and while you can't taste them all it is fun learning about them and trying some.

It is a great collection of Dutch recipes. Dutch cooking is not a widely known cruisine and this book will introduce it to more people. Being part Dutch I really enjoyed it and used many of the recipes.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading - Problematic Recipes.......2004-01-06

                          C. Countess van Limburg Stirum has written an interesting cookbook discussing the food of the Netherlands. I'm part Dutch but know nothing about their food other than those cute windmill cookies you can buy at grocery stores. With relatively few Dutch cookbooks available, I was eager to purchase this book. Overall, the cookbook is interesting, and the author admirably describes the food and food-related customs of the country. However, her writing is choppy and difficult to understand at times. Admittedly, the writer's first language is probably not English, but the American publisher should have done more editing. Although no photos are included of the recipes, a number of the author's hand-drawn pictures are included throughout the cookbook. The pictures are fairly odd, portraying a rather old-fashioned Holland. The cover, for instance, depicts people eating raw herring in a scene that could be straight out of a Rembrandt painting.

The recipes are intriguing but often incomplete, expecting the reader to understand Dutch ingredients and techniques without much explanation. For example, a number of recipes call for boiled ham or beef, without any details. A large portion of the recipes also call for eggs or seafood, so non-fans of those foods may not enjoy this book. In sum, you'll probably really enjoy this cookbook if you're interested in learning more about Dutch food and culture. On the other hand, actually making the recipes may be problematic, as the recipes are written somewhat poorly.

4 out of 5 stars For The "Alternative" Music Collector, It's Worth Owning.......2007-04-27

Yes, there are many glaring omissions, and yes, the prices of many of the records are laughably low. This book's value, however, lies in its cataloging of many popular "alternative" bands from 1976-1996.

Even if you never find them for the prices Neely has listed, at least you'll be able to find out the number 45s Rage Against the Machine released or how many pressings of "Pick Your King" Posion Idea released and which ones were on what colored vinyl.

Admittedly, you could probably find all of the information in the book with some searching online, but there's nothing like having an old fashioned paperback with all the information in it right by your side. Requires no electricity, pries you away from the evils of the addicting internet, and just perhaps will shed light on a group or record you didn't know existed.

And, hey, it's $1.99 from the Amazon Marketplace. How can you pass it up?

Tim Neely is very clear in his Intro (or Disclaimer, if you will) that this book is a guide only and could not include many artist. His Intro addresses most of the negative reviews listed for this book. I liked the book and it proved useful to me. Yes, after almost 10 years it should be updated. Thank You.

Lotsa errors, omissions and inaccuracies. There's about as much chance of finding some of the Misfits singles for the prices listed in this guide as there is for the Boulder police to ever solve the Jon Bennet Ramsey murder.

1 out of 5 stars Many glaring ommissions and out-of-date prices!.......2001-06-25

I really was very dissapointed in the range of music that this book covers. I was hoping to get at least a decent discography of many of these bands, but this volume failed even that test. Having listened to this music in the 1970's and 80's into the 90's and beyond, I take offense to the many glaring ommissions that the author made either by choice or poor research. A few examples are: Psychic TV, Primus, the Muffs, amd Cyprus Hill are a few bands that did not make the cut at all. Steve Albini's original band Big Black is ommited but his 90's band Rapeman is represnted, go figure! (Probobly because by this time he had produced bands like Nirvana, even though Big Black is by far the more influential of his bands) Other bands have only a token mention with only one or two of their discs listed. Examples: Didjits, Naked Raygun, Fugazi, etc. Even more popular acts like Elvis Costello may have his LP's well listed but his Stiff records 45's are completely ignored, likewise Joy Division and the Specials also are poorly represented in the singles department. Especially frustrating to those who grew up with this music is the author's choice to include such modern pop-rock monstrosities as Hootie and the Blowfish and Blues Traveler and other such bands which might find a fine home on most adult contemporary radio stations but can not in any good conscience be considered 'Alternative'. Also if you go into any finer used record store you might be a bit surprised at some of the prices. While the vast majority of record prices have remained constant, he is well off on many of the rarer issues. In conclusion it seems that the author has a real shallow understanding of the heart and soul of the variety of musical forms that are collectively entitled 'Alternative', his viewpoint seems to be that of a contemporary mainstream rock station's music director, strong on the 90's rock but excedingly weak on the roots.

4 out of 5 stars The only one of it's kind!.......1999-08-08

This book is the only one of it's kind that I know of...I think it needs to be updated soon though...it is a 1996 pricing guide..Also, it does need some adds on the artist listings section and a CD guide would be great too. It is the only book that I have found that has what I need for Alternative Rock vinyl listings.

                                          Book Description

Rooms to Remember captures an original approach to decoration. The look is inspired but never enslaved by the past, and relies not on money but on imagination and freedom-the freedom to use illusion and visual excitement, ignore fashion, mix styles and express personal vision. Barbara and Rene' Stoeltie draw on elegant, original interiors as varied as an American country retreat, a French fisherman's dwelling, and an eighteenth century Dutch manor house. Though wide ranging in style, all are united by a spirit of invention; and people who have created these eclectic and timeless rooms delight in sharing their expertise.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic shabby chic interiors.......2005-04-05

The interiors featured in Rooms to Remember are truly inspirational for those of us who value authenticity. They include the interiors of many historic homes in Europe and America that have been carefully designed to create atmosphere and charm. Photographs are of whole rooms as well as smaller vignettes. The always wonderful work of American interior designer John Saladino and the extraordinary and unique work of French interior designer Frederic Mechiche, my favorites, are well represented. The colors in the textiles and paint, and combinations of architectural and design elements are given special attention. The photography evokes the 18th century, and transports you back in time. The text is enjoyably readable and extremely informative. I keep the book on hand...it is that lovely. I highly recommend this book to any interior designer and for those who love really traditional and historical interiors.

                                            Book Description

To many, Kate Smith is now remembered as the big woman with the large voice who made "God Bless America" a second national anthem. It is often forgotten that her 50-year career included Broadway shows, records, film, television, and many concert appearances. With her five-octave range, Smith recorded more than twenty records selling over a million though she never had a singing lesson and could not read music. But it was radio that truly made Smith one of the country's most popular entertainers in the 1930s and 1940s, particularly during World War II, when she sold over $600 million in war bonds. Her success carried over into television. There she was a pioneer in daytime programming, starring in her own top-rated variety show for four years. Through detailed research, access to the singer's correspondence, and interviews with Smith and others, the author has told a remarkable story.

Richard Hayes's book on Kate Smith is a must read for anyone who remembers the great lady, one of the finest entertainers of the 20th Century.
The book is a mixture of chronological events, anecdotes, and a retrospect, all told lovingly by someone who had the distinct privilege of personally knowing her.

This book should grace the shelves of all theater and music school libraries. Students of today's music field could profit by Kate's wisdom, as someone who continually captivated audiences from radio through television.

It's amazing how many years after her passing Kate Smith remains an American icon, with her voice still daily heard on radio, her recordings still available in the stores. This wonderful book, which deserves major-league publishing, tells the whole story of this strong, determined and extremely bright woman. Besides being a totally natural and exemplary singer she was an executive, a producer and a sports team owner. She also was a prominent national commentator. Kate sang elegantly and beautifully but she was never a sentimental type who cooed sweet nothings. She was incredibly well-informed, distinctly verbal and spoke her mind. No wonder America loved her. She stood for common sense, independence and strong ethics and morality. She lived life to the fullest. Her weight, always an issue with the critics but never an issue with her, never kept her from doing anything, including dressing gorgeously (especially in the later years). When rock and roll came in she didn't run but joined in and forged a whole new career on T.V. shows like Cher's (where she did a Beatles medley with Cher and Tina Turner) and Tony Orlando's. Her later concerts gathered her numerous hits into a medley and otherwise addressed new music--the Beatles, Michel LeGrande and so on. Kate was kind to her fans beyond what most artists are willing to do--friendly and accessible but, true to form, clearheaded. She didn't need adulation; she knew just who she was. This is a splendid book, well worth the price, and oh how it recreates an inimitable era in American entertainment right on the mark!

4 out of 5 stars An exhaustive personal & professional bio of Kate Smith.......1998-06-04

I approached this book with the purpose of obtaining enough information to facilitate a performance characterization of Miss Smith for a theatrical endeavor. I was to portray her in a concert setting, imitating her vocally and physically. What I found, to my delight, was a fond but honest look into the life of one of our most cherished national treasures. A look beyond the stage and into the heart, Mr.Hayes painstakingly entices us with detailed program dialogue, amusing anecdotes, personal moments shared with Kate, and private moments of personal pain she endured. I came away surprised, delighted, and absorbed in the life and career of Miss Kate Smith. It is a "must read" for any fan.

5 out of 5 stars "Kate Smith: America's Greatest Star?".......1997-11-30

If you love show-business, this is a definitive and highly readable book about one of the greatest stars of the twentieth century--Miss Kate Smith. Nostalgic, historical, exciting, and wonderful, Richard Hayes has really captured the essence of "The Songbird of the South."

Hayes, a longtime personal friend of Miss Smith, has tapped into a mother-lode of personal recollections from hundreds of celebrities, friends, co-workers and fans to create a full picture of this important American. A veritable joy-ride through the world of entertainment as we now know it, Hayes chronicles Miss Smith's fifty year career from vaudeville to radio (where she was the medium's greatest star) through recordings and concerts and then television (where Kate was a female pioneer). Nostalgia buffs will tear through the pages of this book in a delicious frenzy!

Hayes exhaustively produces a discography that is archival in every sense. He captures Kate's spirit with a confidant familiarity and paints an honest picture of this well-proportioned country girl who reigned supreme as "America's First Lady of Song" throughout most of this century. This book is a real treat!
