Refreshing, spicy and guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings.......2001-04-19
Aric Neville is warrior weary of battle and sickened by court intrigues. Holding himself accountable for a horrible crime, Aric resolves to live out his life as a hermit, never again taking up his sword. Shunned and feared by the villagers as the evil sorcerer in the woods, Aric spends his days in a quiet and solitary manner, quite different from the battlefields of his past.
Yet his fragile peace is shattered by the outspoken Gwyneth de Auburd, niece to the local lord. Gwyneth is being forced to wed the mysterious sorcerer in an attempt to end the drought plaguing the village. Her uncle also has another motive: to rid his castle of the beautiful young woman, clearing the way for his homely daughters to marry the lords who come a'calling.
Furious at having her dreams of marrying for love destroyed, Gwyneth gives her tongue free reign, alternately humoring and enraging her new husband. To Aric's dismay, Gwyneth, sharp tongue at all, is always arousing him. As the sparks fly between the newlyweds, tension also escalates. Being forced to live in such squalid surroundings is yet another bone of contention between Aric and Gwyneth. Yet once Aric returns to his former life to help an old friend, Gwyneth is stunned by her husband's past life. Why would he give up such privilege, wealth, and rank to live amongst the trees and animals of the forest? Resolving to learn more about the complex man, Gwyneth allows herself to explore her feelings for Aric, resulting in her declaration of love. But Aric sees this as a falsehood, as she confesses her love while living the life of wife to a wealthy and powerful lord, not while in the hut of the pauper.
Aric and Gwyneth's path to love is certainly not an easy one, yet Ms. Bradley's writing style guarantees that reading HIS LADY BRIDE will not be a hardship. The characters truly come alive, reaching off of the pages to involve the reader in their lives. Aric's courage and strength will melt even the hardest of hearts, while Gwyneth's quick wit will have readers cheering.
Ms. Bradley is certain to gain a loyal following with HIS LADY BRIDE, the first book in her BROTHERS AT ARMS trilogy for Zebra. Consistently providing readers with entertaining stories, lovable characters, and, most importantly, her stellar writing style, Ms. Bradley never disappoints.

DEFIES THE READER TO READ IT.......2005-09-18

What a mess!.......2003-03-26
The second error in this book, again frequently made by neophyte writers, is the use of symbolism. The story is driven by symbolism, which is something that rarely works. The author explicitly tells us that the beasts in the story are symbols, and the actions taken to fight them are symbolic. The Doctor's illness (and the resolution of it), the TARDIS, the city of the beasts, etc. are all physical manifestations of symbolism. This is not good fiction. Symbolism should serve to enhance the story, not to serve as the premise. What we are left with is a bit mess that doesn't make any sense.
This was my first pick of this series, recently discovering that the BBC was publishing these Doctor Who novels. At first I was taken aback at how things had changed, but now I am intrigued at the overall story, and consider that it is in line with the Doctor Who tradition. Unfortunately, it appears that many of the books preceding this story are either out of print or hard to find in the U.S. I'll be looking for them, though - somewhat in line with the overall experience of Doctor Who as an American: catch it when you can and work to keep up. Anyway, kudos to the BBC and author to keeping it up and taking some risks with the storyline.
900 Doctor Who fans can't be wrong.......2002-10-23
Or, more specifically, you'll love it if you're a fan of the "Doctor Who" books. And I suspect that subset of fans is increasingly shrinking, siphoned off by the lack of availability of the books in the USA, and by the burgeoning audio series.
"The Adventuress of Henrietta Street" is a twisting, gory work of non-fiction. A lot has happened to the Doctor's universe in the books over the past couple of years -- most notably the erasal of Gallifrey and the Time Lords from all of history. "Henrietta" is the first book to try and pick up the pieces and sort out what the books' universe looks like now. It's done in the style of a Z-grade history book (hundreds of passages read similar to: "As the Doctor looked out over the ridge that day, he must have thought about...") and concerns the Doctor's one unsuccessful year as the proprietor of a London bordello. Obviously there's not a huge market for this sort of thing. Of the reported 20,000 people who initially set out to buy original DW fiction, how many of them will find this concept worthy? 900?
That said, once you buy into the central premise, "Henrietta" is truly awesome. A lot of significant events happen within the book's mythology. The name Lawrence Miles on the spine helps: whenever a massive arc shift occurs in the DW universe, it's done most interestingly when Miles is the author (see "Alien Bodies" and "Interference"). Miles weaves his mentally tortured ideas into a coherent whole, and leaves you wanting a lot more. One fun game is to count all the phony historical events that the book's anonymous narrator records so faithfully: Earth history as we know it has been radically altered since "The Ancestor Cell" and when you read here just how some of those events changed, you'll be quite amused (George Washington a ranting warlock, indeed!).
But there's another problem with any Miles-led story arc: the DW books come out monthly, but are written six months in advance. It takes a long time for the concepts Miles works with so deftly, to permeate the other novels -- witness the 18-month vacation of Faction Paradox after "Alien Bodies" was published. I fear a whole lot of confusion in the books ahead, until the other writers figure out just who Sabbath is -- that is, if he makes a return appearance at all!
As the "Doctor Who" books universe becomes a smaller and more confusing place, "The Adventuress of Henrietta Street" is one of its brighter corners. This book is well worth the effort.

I liked it.......2004-07-29
Uncritical rapture.......2004-03-14
Huge Disappointment.......2003-07-11
The Lumiere's book suffers from one major problem: it's boring. Little more than a litany of interviews with various spiritual gurus, it quickly took on a bland sameness that failed to either enlighten or educate; imagine locating twenty people who all share essentially the same outlook on life and then ask each the same dozen or so powder-puff questions and you get an idea of what I'm talking about. Had the Lumiere's been a bit more objective and even skeptical in their approach, it might have made for a more lively discussion. As it was, their obvious adulation for the people they interview ensures that nothing of great interest was ever likely to be said.
Not that the people being interviewed have much to offer by way of practical advice on pursuing one's spiritual quest in any case. They don't seem to live in any world I'm familiar with, and so their responses to the Lumeire's questions are more confusing and mind-numbing than helpful (obviously evidence of my own lack of spiritual maturity no doubt.) They remind me of krishnas at the airport who give out flowers and books to harried passengers: they're obviously happy in a distant sort of way, but incapable of translating that joy to the unwashed masses. In effect, they're too heavenly minded to be of any earthly good.
Additionally, I have no idea who any of these people are. Despite five years of reading on the subject of spirituality, I've never come across a single one of these folks, yet these are the new western spiritual leaders? Why no Deepak Chopra or Neale Donald Walsch or Gary Zukov or somebody someone might have heard of? I'm afraid that despite their best intentions, if these are America's spiritual leaders (who suspiciously seem to conglomerate in the San Francisco area) then spirituality in this country will remain something only for the fringes of society, much as it has for the last forty years.
And this is a shame, for the world is clamoring for spirituality and spiritual leaders to guide them. This book could have given them that, but instead it proved to be little more than another rehash of Buddhism. What a pity.

Menasseh Ben Israel and His World (Brill's Studies in Intellectual History)
Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Library Binding ASIN: 9004091149 |
Book Description
This book, the results of a conference held in Israel in 1985, brings together many new perspectives on the significance of Menasseh ben Israel's ideas, and their relation to Christian millenarian views of the time and Jewish kabbalistic and messianistic thought. Scholars from America, Europe and Israel, working on various aspects of 17th century philosophy and religion present here in 18 essays important new data and interpretations of the Jewish and Christian background, and of Menasseh's ideas and their relation to those of Jewish and Christian thinkers of the time. Thus, this volume provides the grounds for reassessing, on the basis of recent scholarship, the ferment of messianic and millenarian ideas issuing from Holland and England in the mid-17th century.

Patti's Words of Wisdom.......2003-04-17
It was as if you were having a sister girl conversation and she was and did tell it like it is as she sees it .
So much truth to the words of wisdom and great lessons to think about.
I highly recommend Patti's Pearl for a fast and inspirational read. Who knows you might even learn something from her book of life. I sure did.
You might understand some things in your life. Patti, 4.5* for sharing your words of wisdom .
Lessons in Life From a Sister Who Has Lived It.......2003-04-11
Each chapter is headed by a title that will grab and take hold of your senses and make you contemplate, such as "Many a false step is made by standing still", "If you can't be the tablecloth, don't be the dishrag", and "The best way to predict your future is to create it". She shares the heartaches of losing her sisters to illness and the fickle world of show business. She shares candidly the heartache of the end of her long-time marriage and the determination to move on, hopeful that the future promises a brighter future.
This is a little book with big ambitions, not unlike many of the feel-good, self-help books that are offered by many entertainers who want to share their triumphs over adversities. This book is forthright but does not have a preachy tone that can be a turn-off as some other similar books do. I keep this book next to my bed to grab and read a chapter at will for a quick uplifting pick-me-up. Tell it Patti!

Real gems...Lessons to live by!.......2003-02-07
If the intent is to truly inspire, cajole, and motivate, one easily wonders whether these "pearls" are a direct result from personal tragedy, mayhem, or situations from being there. One thing that I feel listeners will agree with is her candor and down-to-earth voice capturing valuable lessons. If you're looking for something different, perhaps you must take a look at yourself before giving this audio-book a chance, especially if it's perceived that they all are one and the same. I feel that to each his own, and one must give a meaningful listen to get the gist of what this author is trying to say. I recommend it¡¦listen for what it's worth. This would be "the perfect anecdote for the ultimate secret of happiness; to grow wise before you grow old" as Patti opined in one of her pearly delights. Give it a shot!
