Revenge and retribution...

In BLIND TRUST, the heart-pounding sequel to Betrayal of the Trust, we are once again caught up in the lives of Laura Caldwell and her circle of family, friends, and yes, even her enemies.

Laura, who was instrumental in bringing down some of the most corrupt families in Philadelphia, escapes to the Cayman Islands immediately afterwards. After almost a year of living abroad, and after her island retreat is destroyed by a hurricane, Laura decides to return to Philadelphia. Upon her return, she soon finds herself once again embroiled in murder, mayhem, scandal and intrigue. When the dust settles, it's anybody's guess who will be left standing.

No matter what genre Leslie Esdaile Banks writes in, she is a master storyteller. Her stories are compelling, gripping and destined to leave you wanting more, anxiously awaiting her next release. I have been a fan of Banks for many years, and as long as she writes I will continue reading. Kudos to a very talented author.

1 out of 5 stars Good writing, Hard to finish.......2005-10-17

This tale opens with financial genius Laura Caldwell in the midst of the hurricane - ravaged Caribbean where her Cayman Island villa has been left in ruins. She hasn't heard from her man in about a year, and some old adversaries have started to take revenge for Laura's part in bringing down Philadelphia's power brokers. After a series of threats, and then when her uncle is implicated in a murder, Laura and her allies set out to expose a group of murderous extortionists.
Blind Trust offers the reader excellent writing, intriguing plot and nicely developed characters. So why was this story so boring that I could only finish a very painful 100 pages? This story is like coming to the theater halfway through a production. I never felt connected to the plot or the characters and if a story doesn't make you feel a part of the action in 100 pages, what's the point in reading more? This story just didn't move me. Perhaps readers of the author's prior work Betrayal of Trust could really get into this book, but for someone who had just learned of this author, the story was so uninspiring that I am not interested in the reading BoT. See www.chocolatesleuth.com for our recommends. Unfortunately, Blind Trust isn't one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Blind Trust by Leslie Esdaile Banks: An PeoplewholoveGoodBooks Review.......2005-09-21

Blind Trust is the heart-pounding, suspense-filled, edge-of-the seat sequel to the equally suspenseful Betrayal of the Trust. Laura is trying to rebuild her life in the Cayman Islands after single-handedly bringing down the most corrupt and poweful families in Philadelphia.....families that were trying to destroy hers. She is determined to move on with her life and marry the man of her dreams James Carver and begin a new life. Unfortunately, things begin to quickly spiral out of control. First a hurricane destroys her home, James disappears, and back home, things begin to happen to her family. The families she fought to bring down are now seeking revenge and no one and nothing is safe. Laura has to make the decision to return home and face them and end the fight once and for all. Leslie Esdaile Banks has proven to be not only a excellent romance writer but also a excellent writer of suspenseful, edge of the seat drama that will grab your attention from the first page. I give this book 4 stars. Reviewed by Shay C of PeoplewholoveGoodBooks.

Many medieval romances are dark and almost overwhelmingly serious -- and thank goodness Shelley Bradley didn't follow that path! Ms. Bradley will delight readers with the first book in her BROTHERS AT ARMS trilogy, further securing her place among the most talented of romance authors.

Aric Neville is warrior weary of battle and sickened by court intrigues. Holding himself accountable for a horrible crime, Aric resolves to live out his life as a hermit, never again taking up his sword. Shunned and feared by the villagers as the evil sorcerer in the woods, Aric spends his days in a quiet and solitary manner, quite different from the battlefields of his past.

Yet his fragile peace is shattered by the outspoken Gwyneth de Auburd, niece to the local lord. Gwyneth is being forced to wed the mysterious sorcerer in an attempt to end the drought plaguing the village. Her uncle also has another motive: to rid his castle of the beautiful young woman, clearing the way for his homely daughters to marry the lords who come a'calling.

Furious at having her dreams of marrying for love destroyed, Gwyneth gives her tongue free reign, alternately humoring and enraging her new husband. To Aric's dismay, Gwyneth, sharp tongue at all, is always arousing him. As the sparks fly between the newlyweds, tension also escalates. Being forced to live in such squalid surroundings is yet another bone of contention between Aric and Gwyneth. Yet once Aric returns to his former life to help an old friend, Gwyneth is stunned by her husband's past life. Why would he give up such privilege, wealth, and rank to live amongst the trees and animals of the forest? Resolving to learn more about the complex man, Gwyneth allows herself to explore her feelings for Aric, resulting in her declaration of love. But Aric sees this as a falsehood, as she confesses her love while living the life of wife to a wealthy and powerful lord, not while in the hut of the pauper.

Aric and Gwyneth's path to love is certainly not an easy one, yet Ms. Bradley's writing style guarantees that reading HIS LADY BRIDE will not be a hardship. The characters truly come alive, reaching off of the pages to involve the reader in their lives. Aric's courage and strength will melt even the hardest of hearts, while Gwyneth's quick wit will have readers cheering.

Ms. Bradley is certain to gain a loyal following with HIS LADY BRIDE, the first book in her BROTHERS AT ARMS trilogy for Zebra. Consistently providing readers with entertaining stories, lovable characters, and, most importantly, her stellar writing style, Ms. Bradley never disappoints.

5 out of 5 stars An emotion gripping romance!!!.......2001-03-03

I found this book to be one off the best I have read in a long time. Ms. Bradley does a wonderful job of keeping your attention caught on her heroine and hero. They are very easy to relate to and you can almost feel what they are experiencing. It's easy to read and makes is very hard to put down. It is set in 1484 England when King Richard is about to lose his throne. You struggle with Aric as he must decide what true honer and love is really about. Gwenyth engages your heart with her spirit and generosity. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a true romance!!!

        5 out of 5 stars What a great romance!.......2000-10-14

I've loved all of Shelley Bradley's books, but I have to admit, HIS LADY BRIDE, is probably my favorite. As always, Ms. Bradley knows how to draw the reader into her story. I was hooked from the first page. Aric and Gwenyth are a wonderful couple! A must-read for any romance fan.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of a ground-breaking new historical series!.......2000-08-22

In her new book, "His Lady Bride," Shelley Bradley spins a fascinating tale of intrigue and romance against a rich historical background. The reign of Richard the III was a turbulent time with scandals and infanticide swirling around the battles between the Yorks and the Tudors. Bradley sets her tale in and amongst this exciting period and her extensive research into the period is evident. "His Lady Bride" is the first book in Bradley's new "Brothers In Arms" series which will feature Aric's close friends Drake and Kieran in upcoming volumes. Watch for this groundbreaking series to catapult Shelley Bradley into the league of the country's top historical romance authors.

1 out of 5 stars DEFIES THE READER TO READ IT.......2005-09-18

WARNING: Reading this book may induce flashbacks to the worst history books your teacher ever forced you to read in high school!

This "novel" is written as one of those dull, dry, historical texts and as such keeps the reader detached from the characters. There's little dialogue and the prose is written in complete exposition--that is, it tells but doesn't show. Add in the extremely small print, and you've got a book that begs "Don't read me!" Unless you're a die-hard DOCTOR WHO fan AND a devoted follower of the book series, you'll probably answer it by shrugging your shoulders and saying, "Okay, I won't."

Things happen in the book that will directly effect the storylines of subsequent Eighth Doctor novels, and that is the ONLY reason anyone should even ATTEMPT to read this book. And even at that, you might want to first try searching the web for any blogs that sum up those events so that you can pass on this dreadful, dreadful book.

1 out of 5 stars forced to read due to being a follower of the series.......2004-03-17

OH MY GOD what a tiring piece of work that fails on so many levels. I've just finished it and still have know idea what the point was and the only reason I even finished it was hoping there would be an actual point to it and actually I am a follower of the series and figured what happened may have later (im)pertinence to the series. As one other reviewer said not since the new adventures was there a more "dense" book. Pretentious more like. I usually can't wait to finish the Doctor Who BBS series novels however this one simply dragged on and on and on and had to force myself to finish. Unless you're a Doctor Who completist DO NOT WASTE A MINUTE ON THIS BOOK.

        3 out of 5 stars What a mess!.......2003-03-26

This book is very ambitious, unfortunately the author does not demonstrate the skill to pull it off. The fundamental flaw is quite basic, in fact violates the first guideline of modern fiction writing that anyone should learn: show, don't tell. This novel is mostly exposition, keeping the reader at a distance from the story and somewhat disallowing real characterization or clarity of action. Doubly frustrating, many important events in the story are deliberately clouded by the author. Interestingly, neophyte authors of science fiction and horror frequently attempt this type of story, pieced together through journals and records, because they like DRACULA so much (which doesn't, however, stand as an example of modern fiction).

The second error in this book, again frequently made by neophyte writers, is the use of symbolism. The story is driven by symbolism, which is something that rarely works. The author explicitly tells us that the beasts in the story are symbols, and the actions taken to fight them are symbolic. The Doctor's illness (and the resolution of it), the TARDIS, the city of the beasts, etc. are all physical manifestations of symbolism. This is not good fiction. Symbolism should serve to enhance the story, not to serve as the premise. What we are left with is a bit mess that doesn't make any sense.

This was my first pick of this series, recently discovering that the BBC was publishing these Doctor Who novels. At first I was taken aback at how things had changed, but now I am intrigued at the overall story, and consider that it is in line with the Doctor Who tradition. Unfortunately, it appears that many of the books preceding this story are either out of print or hard to find in the U.S. I'll be looking for them, though - somewhat in line with the overall experience of Doctor Who as an American: catch it when you can and work to keep up. Anyway, kudos to the BBC and author to keeping it up and taking some risks with the storyline.

        4 out of 5 stars 900 Doctor Who fans can't be wrong.......2002-10-23

Here's a loaded statement: if you're a "Doctor Who" fan, you will love "The Adventuress of Henrietta Street".

Or, more specifically, you'll love it if you're a fan of the "Doctor Who" books. And I suspect that subset of fans is increasingly shrinking, siphoned off by the lack of availability of the books in the USA, and by the burgeoning audio series.

"The Adventuress of Henrietta Street" is a twisting, gory work of non-fiction. A lot has happened to the Doctor's universe in the books over the past couple of years -- most notably the erasal of Gallifrey and the Time Lords from all of history. "Henrietta" is the first book to try and pick up the pieces and sort out what the books' universe looks like now. It's done in the style of a Z-grade history book (hundreds of passages read similar to: "As the Doctor looked out over the ridge that day, he must have thought about...") and concerns the Doctor's one unsuccessful year as the proprietor of a London bordello. Obviously there's not a huge market for this sort of thing. Of the reported 20,000 people who initially set out to buy original DW fiction, how many of them will find this concept worthy? 900?

That said, once you buy into the central premise, "Henrietta" is truly awesome. A lot of significant events happen within the book's mythology. The name Lawrence Miles on the spine helps: whenever a massive arc shift occurs in the DW universe, it's done most interestingly when Miles is the author (see "Alien Bodies" and "Interference"). Miles weaves his mentally tortured ideas into a coherent whole, and leaves you wanting a lot more. One fun game is to count all the phony historical events that the book's anonymous narrator records so faithfully: Earth history as we know it has been radically altered since "The Ancestor Cell" and when you read here just how some of those events changed, you'll be quite amused (George Washington a ranting warlock, indeed!).

But there's another problem with any Miles-led story arc: the DW books come out monthly, but are written six months in advance. It takes a long time for the concepts Miles works with so deftly, to permeate the other novels -- witness the 18-month vacation of Faction Paradox after "Alien Bodies" was published. I fear a whole lot of confusion in the books ahead, until the other writers figure out just who Sabbath is -- that is, if he makes a return appearance at all!

As the "Doctor Who" books universe becomes a smaller and more confusing place, "The Adventuress of Henrietta Street" is one of its brighter corners. This book is well worth the effort.

        3 out of 5 stars Knowledge isn't always painless..........2002-07-16

Even though it's dense, even though it's long, if you follow the series book by book, you have to read it or else later you'll be sayng "What the...". I learned the hard way.

        Book Description

The days when we in the West looked toward the Eastern religious traditions for enlightenment are coming to an end. Western Spirituality has come into its own, drawing on the rich philosophies of Zen, Hinduism, Advaita Vedanta, Kashmiri Shaivism, Judaism, and Christianity.

In this groundbreaking book, the Western spiritual teachers and seekers at the forefront of this movement explore this phenomenon and share their experience, warmth, and wisdom: Adyashanti Peter Fenner Gangaji Douglas Harding Catherine Ingram Kenny Johnson Francis Lucille Satyam Nadee Mira Pagal Robert Rabbin Byron Katie Rolle Isaac Shapiro Lama Surya Das Christopher Titmus Eckhart Tolle.

In its earlier incarnation as a self-published book, The Awakening West sold out of its first printing of 3000 copies and went into a second printing--all sales through the web site and authors' events. The book is destined to become a classic, as it establishes Western spiritual thought as a tradition in its own right—a new and growing branch of philosophy and teaching with its own take on enlightenment.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-06-05

Gives a taste of many non-dual spiritual teachers. One of my favorite books. Very useful tool for me.

        2 out of 5 stars Buyer beware.......2006-10-27

A bit of a disappointment - although the individual interviews are interesting, they are conducted in such a non-critical way that they amount to little more than a potted biography of each of the interviewees. Not very challenging intellectually, and does little to illuminate non-duality effectively.

In addition, the latest printing of this book DOES NOT contain an interview with Byron Katie, despite what the blurb says on here.

        5 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2004-07-29

I am really enjoying this book. I find the sympathetic approach to my liking. The teachers interviewed are among the hottest of the emerging Westerners. Having been on some type of spiritual path for the last 30 years, the issue of moving from the occaisional glimpse to an on-going state of 'presence' quite compelling. Demythologizing the state of 'self-realization' and bringing it into clear accuracy is of great service.
As to whether a particular teacher appeals to one's sensibilities or genuine or not should be left up to the critical faculties of the seeker. This book points to something beyond belief systems and gurus. If one of these teachers appeals to you, check them out, read their books, go to their satsangs, etc. Judge for yourself.

        1 out of 5 stars Uncritical rapture.......2004-03-14

What prevents me to appreciate this book is the servile base flattery which is penetrating all over the pages. Each and every teacher is praised by the authors in a complete uncritical way. This makes the interviews monotonous, and the portrayed persons somewhat unpleseant since everybody seems to accept this keen servility and praise. Furthermore: the authors's questions and remarks, printed in full lenght, which makes readings boring, give a "me too"-impression: "Me too, I've had deep insights, me too, I've already found wisdom, me too"...
I recommend the very honest and captivatingly written book by Paula Marvelly: partly the same teachers but a very different quality. After reading it gets clearer whom of the teachers one would like to listen to and whom not. This makes it far more interesting and helpful than "Awakening in the West": Easily available via the British Amazon site.

        2 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment.......2003-07-11

As someone who has been on a spiritual quest for a number of years now, I looked forward with great anticipation to this book hoping for new insights and practical wisdom from today's new western spiritual leaders. Unfortunately, I was to come away disappointed.

The Lumiere's book suffers from one major problem: it's boring. Little more than a litany of interviews with various spiritual gurus, it quickly took on a bland sameness that failed to either enlighten or educate; imagine locating twenty people who all share essentially the same outlook on life and then ask each the same dozen or so powder-puff questions and you get an idea of what I'm talking about. Had the Lumiere's been a bit more objective and even skeptical in their approach, it might have made for a more lively discussion. As it was, their obvious adulation for the people they interview ensures that nothing of great interest was ever likely to be said.

Not that the people being interviewed have much to offer by way of practical advice on pursuing one's spiritual quest in any case. They don't seem to live in any world I'm familiar with, and so their responses to the Lumeire's questions are more confusing and mind-numbing than helpful (obviously evidence of my own lack of spiritual maturity no doubt.) They remind me of krishnas at the airport who give out flowers and books to harried passengers: they're obviously happy in a distant sort of way, but incapable of translating that joy to the unwashed masses. In effect, they're too heavenly minded to be of any earthly good.

Additionally, I have no idea who any of these people are. Despite five years of reading on the subject of spirituality, I've never come across a single one of these folks, yet these are the new western spiritual leaders? Why no Deepak Chopra or Neale Donald Walsch or Gary Zukov or somebody someone might have heard of? I'm afraid that despite their best intentions, if these are America's spiritual leaders (who suspiciously seem to conglomerate in the San Francisco area) then spirituality in this country will remain something only for the fringes of society, much as it has for the last forty years.

And this is a shame, for the world is clamoring for spirituality and spiritual leaders to guide them. This book could have given them that, but instead it proved to be little more than another rehash of Buddhism. What a pity.

These recipes were great!! The ingredients are largely cupboard staples, and they are all easy to make. The Mock Boursin Cheese rivals a local cheesery in a nearby historical village. There are recipes that I would have NEVER thought of (a fruit salad with spaghetti??? DELICIOUS!) and some old recipes of things I haven't thought of in years (like eggs-in-a-hole... from Girl Scouts in the late 70's). I recommend this for people who want to make things from scratch without all the "fluff" of some other cookbooks.

I love this cook book! I found several recipes that I thought were made up family concoctions. The "porcupines" recipe is great. It is like glumkes without the cabbage. Terrific, rib sticking old standbys that you never had the recipe to.

This book is a treasure of wonderful ideas for gift-making pincushions! The pictures are beautifully done, and instructions are clear. Also, the book itself would be a fine gift for a sewer/crafter on anyone's list!

5 out of 5 stars A must for the craft library of lovers of Victoriana........1998-01-09

I never thought I'd rave over a book about pincushions but this book was a delight. Victoriana lovers know that a house cannot be too overcrowded with lacy, satiny, fussy little objects. Pincushions certainly fill that bill. Making Fabulous Pincushions is aptly titled. The abundant, color photographs make your mind race with the possibilities. I never realized how many different types of pincushions abounded. While those included in this book were strongly ornamental, they could definitely be used if you so wish as functional pincushions. There is something for every level of crafting ability and instructions are clear. Definitely a must have for the libraries of crafters and Victoriana lovers.

            Book Description

This book, the results of a conference held in Israel in 1985, brings together many new perspectives on the significance of Menasseh ben Israel's ideas, and their relation to Christian millenarian views of the time and Jewish kabbalistic and messianistic thought. Scholars from America, Europe and Israel, working on various aspects of 17th century philosophy and religion present here in 18 essays important new data and interpretations of the Jewish and Christian background, and of Menasseh's ideas and their relation to those of Jewish and Christian thinkers of the time. Thus, this volume provides the grounds for reassessing, on the basis of recent scholarship, the ferment of messianic and millenarian ideas issuing from Holland and England in the mid-17th century.

Patti's Pearls was a inspirational read for me. She shared
some lessons of wisdom which was passed on to her.

It was as if you were having a sister girl conversation and she was and did tell it like it is as she sees it .
So much truth to the words of wisdom and great lessons to think about.
I highly recommend Patti's Pearl for a fast and inspirational read. Who knows you might even learn something from her book of life. I sure did.
You might understand some things in your life. Patti, 4.5* for sharing your words of wisdom .

4 out of 5 stars Lessons in Life From a Sister Who Has Lived It.......2003-04-11

In Patti's Pearls, singer/entertainer Patti LaBelle with Ebony columnist, Laura Randolph Lancaster, gives her readers lessons, anecdotes, and pearls of wisdom that she has culled over the years. She takes incidents from her life as an entertainer, daughter, sister, and mother to reveal the fears, trials and joys of life.

Each chapter is headed by a title that will grab and take hold of your senses and make you contemplate, such as "Many a false step is made by standing still", "If you can't be the tablecloth, don't be the dishrag", and "The best way to predict your future is to create it". She shares the heartaches of losing her sisters to illness and the fickle world of show business. She shares candidly the heartache of the end of her long-time marriage and the determination to move on, hopeful that the future promises a brighter future.

This is a little book with big ambitions, not unlike many of the feel-good, self-help books that are offered by many entertainers who want to share their triumphs over adversities. This book is forthright but does not have a preachy tone that can be a turn-off as some other similar books do. I keep this book next to my bed to grab and read a chapter at will for a quick uplifting pick-me-up. Tell it Patti!

3 out of 5 stars Real gems...Lessons to live by!.......2003-02-07

For 40 years as a singer, Patti LaBelle has mesmerized us with a style that many imitate but rarely duplicate. The stylistic rendering of this diva of song from her third Literary effort, Patti's Pearls: Lessons In Living Genuinely, Joyfully, Generously, are self-help inspirational guidelines delivered in a believable idiom much like her singing -- with invigorating energy that implores one to sit up and listen. After listening, I couldn't help but bring to mind my own upbringing, remembering much of the same logic being dispensed here. Written in tandem with her longtime friend, Laura Randolph Lancaster, this offering is in audio form which adds a different, if not compelling. version in light of Patti's stage machinations.

If the intent is to truly inspire, cajole, and motivate, one easily wonders whether these "pearls" are a direct result from personal tragedy, mayhem, or situations from being there. One thing that I feel listeners will agree with is her candor and down-to-earth voice capturing valuable lessons. If you're looking for something different, perhaps you must take a look at yourself before giving this audio-book a chance, especially if it's perceived that they all are one and the same. I feel that to each his own, and one must give a meaningful listen to get the gist of what this author is trying to say. I recommend it¡¦listen for what it's worth. This would be "the perfect anecdote for the ultimate secret of happiness; to grow wise before you grow old" as Patti opined in one of her pearly delights. Give it a shot!

5 out of 5 stars Have a big slice of wisdom pie!.......2002-09-04

Here is a novel that anyone can pick up and learn something about Ms. LaBelle and themselves. With this book, Patti has given her story in 145 pages, including the life lessons that she's learned, from rectifing mistakes, forgiving past discretions, and moving on from tragedies and life's pitfalls. Not every bad time is to be mire with regret and left to stewed over, and every good moment to be taken for granted. With this offering, Patti's not just reciting her stories, but giving insight on how we can live day to day and see the possibilites that we have to offer ourselves and to the world at large. Very inspirational and extremely provoking, Patti LaBelle is a real testement to all of us with love in our hearts and hopes of a better tomorrow.
