It is June. Together, Day and Diana disappear from New Jersey, setting out to explore the life and investigate the death of the man known as Daniel Lyam Montross. Through ghost towns and abandoned villages they journey, becoming in turn, amateur archaelogists, naturalists, sleuthss, historians, and inevitably and ultimately, lovers.
And always the presence of Daniel Lyam Montross is with them. Dead, he is fated to die again. Is one or both of them also fated to die?
One of Harington's most devious narratives, and a precursor to the Stay More cycle.

I, too, read this book back in the seventies and loved it. The fact that much of it took place where I grew up, in Arkansas, was a factor. I have recently tracked it down and obtained a new copy, which I look forward to reading.
What I really want to know is whether anyone else remembers that a MOVIE was made of this book in the 80's. The title and of course some of the events were changed, but it was very interesting and I would like to see it again. Does anyone remember the name of this movie and/or know where I may obtain a copy? I would be most grateful.

I completely agree with the other reviewers. This is the most fascinating book I've ever read. Mr. Harington is an unsung genius. He should be picked by Oprah and then he might get the kudos he richly deserves. His writing is so beautiful, stories so imaginative,etc. etc. etc. Hard to believe one person could write so well.
I was (and am) completely mesmerized by this novel........1999-03-25
There are two subjects that particularly fascinate. One is "things para-normal" and the other is "sexuality." Harington's book explores both with such stunning originality and skill that I can hardly finish the book!
Let me explain. Usually when I'm reading I will dog-ear a page that I know I will want to return to some day. In this case, I have marked so many pages and individualy sections--even sentences--and I continue to return to many of them so frequently, that after three months I still haven't finished it! Oh, yes, I have actually read all the pages, including the last, but there remains so much wonder in this story and the telling of it that I really can't (if you'll excuse the cliche) put it down.
I cannot imagine how, or from what source, the author received his inspiration or research for this book. And how can he know that much about what goes on inside the human head, whether it be the characters' heads or our own?
I don't want to overdo it, and I know nothing else about the author except the fact of this book, but I am in awe of his insights and ability to express them in this way. The title, alone, is absolutely brilliant!
My favorite ghost story..........1998-10-25
My favorite ghost story is SOME OTHER PLACE, THE RIGHT PLACE. It is sexy, funny, sad, and wise. The story is about a college girl who happens reads a newspaper story about high school boy who, under hypnosis, has been channeling a ghost -- the ghost of her grandfather! She and the boy begin an odyssey, visiting all the ghost towns where the ghost used to live. Naturally the boy falls in love with the girl -- but she falls in love with the ghost who emerges in the boy when he is under hypnosis, so this becomes one strange love triangle. This book and THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE ARKANSAS OZARKS by the same author are the two books I most often give away to my friends.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this wonderful lady's memoir. I have been reading her books for years and lost track of her for a while. I read the book she wrote to her readers and it was copyrighted in 1992. What I'm wondering - what is her very latest book? Doing a calculation, I think she must be in her mid-80's and I wonder if she and Joyce are still part of the famous Islanders on our favorite vacation spot, St. Simon's?. Thank you.

Eugenia Price is a very spiritual writer with a lotof love to go around.I've read everything I can get by her and even went to her island about 4 years ago and toured around the island right down to the cemeteries where some of the characters were buried.A very fascinating book, as are all her books.

This book was captivating. The characters were well defined, the descriptions were vivid, the plotline was rivoting. I was completely swept away with Anne and John's love story and with Anne's love of her homeland and family. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

But the thing that makes the olden-days Batman cool is that he and Superman were pals and so Superman wouldn't want to beat Batman up unless Batman turned evil, which could never happen even under hypnosis. The modern-day Batman is just evil, so Superman would be justified in beating him up.

It's been a while since I read this book but I was at my uncles spending the night my uncle took my brother the previous day to the library so when I came of course I read it this book features a ton of stories so if you like Batman I reccomend this book.

What a beautiful book. Mine is the sixth edition which means it is the latest update. Originally released in 1983 the book is clearly "timeless". As a fundamental Christian i became interested in Gnosticism. Then i was lead to ACIM. i took the Course. After reading "Love Does Not Condemn" (by the same author) i became aware of my desire to learn the "truths" of the Bible reinterpreted thru the use of the ACIM thought system. Wow! i am in awe. He covers the "ego" influences in the Bible and how they affected the prophets, disciples and apostles. Which is such a relief for me since the Bible for me is so contradictory to the point of frustration. i have never been disappointed with anything Dr. Wapnick has published. He remindes me of the "Christian's" version of the Apostle Paul. i enjoyed this book to the max!

The tradtional sacrificial model of Christianity where an angry God demands a pound of flesh (sacrifice of his beloved Jesus on the cross) before we are loved by and acceptable to Him at some deep level does not make any sense to me. Dr. Wapnicks explanation of Jesus' life and death based on A Course In Miracles is not only logical, it is beautiful. This view allows us to logically believe in a joyful, peacefilled, nonviolent Jesus and a God who never stops loving us. This book greatly changed my life. It started me on the path of wanting to love Jesus again and eliminating my fear of God and death.

I had this book, gave it away in a generous moment. After borrowing it from the library, I've decided I need a copy to keep. The reasons why: the food is original, flavorful; the preparation ranges from easy to moderate; the ingredients can be had in just about any supermarket; it is healthful, but you'd never know it. The turnip gratin is outstanding--I've served it and other recipes from this book to guests. It makes very simple substitutions for fat--buttermilk is used frequently. Corn syrup is used to maintain texture in some of the baked confections.
Why it merits 4, not 5, stars: There are only 125 recipes and the only nutritional data offered is the fat gram count.
Mixed Feelings about this book-.......2001-09-23
I had mixed feelings about this cookbook. I am going to hang on to my copy for a while and see if I ever use it. Here is what I think.
First the positive:
The recipes are very yummy. They turn out wonderful. They have reasonable serving sizes that are low in fat. The pictures are gorgeous.
These are the types of recipes that you want to cook to impress someone when time and effort are no bother. You can fluff your hair and say, "yes, I made it from scratch and it's low in fat too"!
The negatives:
Each recipe is a lot of work. These are the types of recipes a budding gourmet cook might want to make. They are time consuming and use a lot of ingredients that is not always on hand (shrimp, lime juice, fresh herbs etc). Low fat cooking should not be so hard.
IF you want to really impress someone with a yummy dish and don't care about how much time and effort it takes, this is the book to get. However, I think for the one or two meals that you might be doing this- it's easier to just forget about the low fat part and go with some high fat easy to cook wonderful meal.

Many of the ingredients in these recipes are things that I ordinarily would not use. I am disappointed that the calorie count has not been added to each recipe. If I had scanned this cookbook in a book store I definately would not have purchased it.

The author's home is beautiful and it did contain some great ideas. Overall I wasn't impressed. I find more good stuff in my everyday magazines than this. Wasn't worth the $$$.

There were some great ideas, and I do appreciate the tools listings, but overall I was a little disappointed. It just didn't seem to be as in-depth as I had hoped. I hope that she expands on her texts in the future.

Whenever I'm thinking of doing a project around the house, I always refer to my copy of Junk Chic. Kathy has great modern ideas that are easy to do, don't cost much, and look great when you're done. If you like to decorate, you need to add Junk Chic to your book shelf!!

I have always wanted to have a home that looked this beautiful, but never have had a lot of money. I have so enjoyed both the satisfaction of doing these unique and very affordable projects and then sitting back and seeing what I have created. I would recommend this book to anyone. I have seen the "Junk Chic", Kathryn Elliott on the local TV morning show (as a quest) - she is inspiring to say the least.

This is a book that you check out from the library, not one that you purchase. Everything seemed skimpy to me, from the pictures to the text. Also, beware of another of the author's books, Fabulous Flea Market Finds. The cover is different and it has a different title, but from cover-to-cover it is the exact same book! I had no idea that you could just change the title of a book and sell it.

Some critics in England and France have long maintained that British director Terence Fisher, whose films dominated world markets in the 1950s and 60s, was one of the greatest directors of fantasy films in history. Since his death in 1980, Fisher's reputation has grown from relative obscurity and his influence on the development of the modern horror film has been widely recognized. However, Fisher's importance should not be limited to the context of the fantasy and horror film genres. His films should also be recognized as expressions of his generalizations about human spirituality.
This critical study of Fisher's films begins with an introduction that provides biographical information on his film career, summaries of all of the films he directed and examples of his impact on contemporary cinema. All of Fisher's films are analyzed in terms of their Christian and religious themes as well as their mythical sources. Chapters are devoted to Fisher's work on the subjects of Frankenstein, Dracula, curses (The Devil Rides Out), the ancient goddess (The Gorgon), the divided self (The Man Who Could Cheat Death) and the redeemer hero (The Stranglers of Bombay). The concluding chapter analyzes the role and influence of Biblical narratives in Fisher's films. Also included is a filmography; the work is fully indexed.

Paul Leggett's Terence Fisher: Horror, Myth and Religion is a must for two categories of readers. And there are a lot of people in both categories.
The first category is fans of horror and sci-fi films. For all in the first group, Terence Fisher was a giant. His haunting productions for Britain's Hammer Films left an indelible impression on the millions who first saw them. They live on, on video and DVD, and on television every week, everywhere. Fisher's Draculas and Frankensteins, werewolves and phantoms were in technicolor. They were pure Gothic and presented as "A" films even though they were "B" films. Horror fans can now learn about their hero-auteur at depth.
The second category of readers for Dr. Leggett's book is fans of Christian fantasy and allegory. Many Christians are interested in popular culture, specifically in finding themes like redemption and sacrifice and atonement within movies and art. This is why Stephen King, for example, in fiction or Abel Ferrara in cinema attract interest from within the religious community. Not to mention Tolkien, and more Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings phenomenon has been fueled in part by adolescents coming to the material out of Christian interests and background.
Terence Fisher was a Christian apologist! That is not all he was, but Christian themes of love's conquest in cruciform imagery abound in his movies. Christian images are everywhere you look, from Curse of the Werewolf (1960) to The Devil Rides Out (1968), and before, and after.
Because Dr. Leggett is a theologian and a pastor, as well as a fan, he is able to make the connection between the world in which we actually live now and the preoccupations of the films of Terence Fisher. Leggett is a classic Christian-nothing New Age here!-and he is one who has been fascinated by these films since childhood. His book links the dark and deep struggles of the child in all of us, with a master storyteller in film; and sets the whole on the big screen of cosmic drama.

Seminal work.......2003-02-15
All credit to Paul Leggett, a Presbyterian pastor no less, for producing this seminal study of the religious and mythical themes in Terence Fisher's films. He argues convincingly, from a canon including most of the significant horrors he made for Hammer, that the mythological worldview of Fisher's films is intrinsically Christian. Leggett examines the fundamental motifs in the films and reveals an underlying story of the battle between good and evil, seen in terms of the traditional Christian symbols of the fall, the cross etc. He provides a good sense of the development of the horror film, and laments how the classical themes of redemption have been replaced with an almost nihilistic worldview (see, eg. my review of Rosemary's Baby).
Leggett's work is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is the work of a committed Christian. Christian (or at least evangelical) attitudes to film, in particular horror film, have been ambivalent at best, and Leggett's work, if it gains the popularity it deserves, may challenge Christians to rethink the issues. Secondly, it contributes to a debate about Fisher's work that has probably only really emerged in the last couple of decades, as his right to be seen as more than a maker of B-standard horror movies has been acknowledged. Thirdly, it is the only work (to my knowledge) that examines the religious, mythical and, in particular, specifically Christian, themes in Fisher's work. As such, the book has opened up a new part of the debate.
On the negative side, I would mention a few things. Firstly, the author has a tendency, no doubt because of his own faith, to paint Fisher in evangelical, or at least very conservative/orthodox, stripes, perhaps assuming too close a correlation between the imagery and mythology he chose to structure his stories around and the actual content of Fisher's personal faith. Secondly, at just under two hundred pages (including illustrations), it feels rather brief, and I am sure there is much more the author could have said--and indeed, should say, hopefully in a later volume. Thirdly, I wish the stills had been chosen with more attention to how they amplify or illustrate Leggett's interpretation of Fisher's films, perhaps noting lighting, positioning, imagery, angles etc...
