Named One of the Best Books of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle
How well do we ever know the people we love? Chessman examines this question in three generations of women in a contemporary Connecticut family. As dementia overtakes Hannah Pearl, she slips backward in memory to her escape from France in 1940; boarding the ferry with her heavy bags; the whistle of bombs raining down on London; the family she left behind. Her daughter Miranda, distraught by Hannah's fading lucidity and sudden switch to her childhood French, tries desperately to hold her in the present. Fiona, a new mother and the older of Hannah's two granddaughters, ignores the ghosts of her grandmother's past, while her sister, fiery Ida, seeks to delve into Hannah's story, eventually returning to France to find the roots of her grandmother's lifeand her own.

Feeling helpless.......2007-01-22
I never received my order. Can someone help me out here????!!! I need it for my February book club meeting!
Zzzzzz.......2006-08-27
I got bored. It's a rather short book, with all kinds of recommendations, so I read 20% before I gave up. Interesting and original premise, though.
Good Read.......2005-10-05
Hannah Pearl resides in a nursing home in Connecticut because Hannah drifts from this time to others as her battle with memory loss slowly wins.
Hannah's life has not been easy; first she loses her family in the Holocaust, then her husband in the war, but Hannah was a fighter and made a life for herself and her daughter; a daughter whose heart aches at the emotional loss of her mother.
This book is Hannah's story. Told through her memory flashbacks, and seen through her daughter and granddaughters eyes as they struggle to understand not just what is happening to Hannah, but what she wants to leave with them before she departs this life.
It is an emotional read but one that will touch your heart with truths as past and present become one and you realize that life is precious for those who know love.
Emotional flashbacks to a War filled with Sadness.......2005-05-01
This is a story about Hannah. She is in an old age home.
She has flashbacks to her life as a young fifteen year old girl who lived during the war in France during the Holocaust. She was sent to England by her parents during the war for safety. She left behind her little sister, Emmma who is frequently in her flashbacks.
Hannah has a daughter who is very loving to her, and two grandaughter who are also very loving and try to help her, but sometimes to no avail. The become the "family" that Hannah has left behind, in one of her delusional flashbacks.
She has dementia and one day finds herself in a drug store with slippers, her walker and her sweater and is very confused. The workers in the store try to help her. She becomes very upset and only talks in french to the attendants. In her mind she is reliving a terrible night that happened to her.
The book is good, not great, it does give you some insight into a person who has a altzheimer's disease. It is very sad that she thinks the reason why her parents sent her away is because they didn't love her.
It is a fast read, and emotional also.
riding along the sun's brief gleams.......2004-12-30
If you've ever driven past narrowly spaced trees with bright sun sharply angled, you will understand Hannah Pearl's condition: light/darkness, light/dark, wending so fast that one becomes dizzy after 30 seconds. Hannah, too, is in/out all day, from the time she spends at Tikkun, a nursing home, to her brief jaunts with Miranda, the daughter whom she refers to as "maman" halfway through this short novel. Sometimes Hannah can recall reality: her daughter Mir, her 20somethings granddaughters. Mostly, though, she lives on the periphery of reality, where her own mind creates the most vivid and understandable scenarios.
Chessman's style, as in "Lydia Cassat," a previous novel, reminds one a bit of Virginia Woolf: the writing flows lyrically, at times like poetry. There are numerous references to color, flowers, and other inhabitants of nature. I love how she weaves Hannah's French language into her thoughts and utterances, and how confused the other characters are by her native language. The scene in which Hannah is lost in a drugstore is particularly moving, as is the final scene with Hannah and her great-grandson.
I want to send a copy of this to a young woman who was in the same writing class as I was this summer. She was writing a lovely, heartbreaking memoir of her grandmother's gradual decline into Alzheimer's. Although Chessman's book is not a memoir, technically, it reads much like one--a very good one.

AT HER VERY BEST.......2007-05-17
Dorothy Garlock is my fav. I have read ALL OF HER BOOKS. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAV. It has been a while since I have read this book but it is sooo romantic and wonderful, couldn't put it down!!! I am actually thinking of reading it again. I love when the leads have a history. It adds depth and meaning to the story! HOPE YOU ENJOY AS MUCH AS I DID!!!!
Ribbon in the sky.......2003-07-02
I think Dorothy Garlock's books could be rated on separate items e.g. time setting, characters, plot, descriptions. Ribbon in the Sky I thought:
The setting: great
The characters: interesting
The plot: good
The descriptions: excellent.
I left the story a little sad for people that read and quoted scripture yet knew nothing of forgiveness, repentance or unity.
Absolutely wonderful!!!!.......2002-02-09
This is one great book!!! The romance is sizzling, and the characters are unforgetable!! I couldn't put this book down, and am now anxious for my next Dorothy Garlock book!
Tension and excitement are found on every page, as Letty and Mike fall in love, then lose each other due to Letty's father. When Letty - fifteen, pregnant, and terrified - seeks out her grandparents that she doesn't even know, in hopes they will take her in until Mike finds her, you can feel the fear with every word Ms. Garlock writes. Throughout the story, you feel all the growing pains of Letty as she becomes a woman and mother.
Mike Dolan comes home from working in the logging camp to hearing that Letty has become ill and died at her grandparent's farm. Mike begins a reckless life when joining the war, and when he finally gets out... decides to visit Letty's gravesite, hoping he'll be able to move on. Only instead of a gravesite for his dear Letty, he finds out she is alive... and with another last name... could she actually be alive?? ... and is she married???
In addition, the story includes murder and threats from Letty's family after many years... these items will keep you turning the pages!
This is a touching story, and if the romance doesn't draw you in... the relationship of Mike Dolan with his son, Patrick, will. Great story... and as always with Ms. Garlock, great selection of characters!!!
The Best Book I Have Ever Read!.......1999-12-12
This book was by far the most romantic, exciting, and wonderful book I have ever read. Dorothy Garlock is a fantastic story teller. Her characters are great people especially the men. This is not something that you normally find with other romance books. If you don't read this book and get excited when they finally find each other, then you are not human. Take my advice, buy and READ this book!
Wow!.......1999-06-22
"Ribbon In The Sky" is another wonderful story by Dorothy Garlock. If I'm thinking about the characters from a story that I am reading while I am trying to get my work done, then I consider that a book worthy of 5 stars. Other books that I loved by Dorothy Garlock are "Forever Victoria", "The Listening Sky", "Love and Cherish", "Sweetwater" and "With Song".

very positive children reactions; incredible, inspiring art.......1998-03-22
I've been reading the Spanish language version of this book to second graders for about five years. They are enthralled by the story and the artwork. The art is done in 3 dimensional collage using natural materials - hard to distinguish from reality. It inspires great art projects. My copy has worn out from loving eyes and fingers poring over it. Thus begins the compelling story of a young girl's
journey to adulthood, family turmoil, the effects and aftermath of war, emigration to a new land, a troubled marriage, and . . . an enduring
quest for happiness and contentment.

From Italy to America.......2007-08-16
In Ribbons of Blue in My Sky, Mariarosa bridged the Italian and American culture with courage and grace. This story came to me at a time in my life that I needed courage to face my own obstacles. As I read Mariarosa's story it gave me strength. I laughed; I cried but most of all I loved way she writes. When she was in Italy, I felt like I was walking beside her, when she was on the ship I felt like I was on the voyage, when she finally got to America I felt like I stepped off the boat with her. Her writing is real as the story takes you though her day to day life and the obstacles, emotions and decisions she faced. Thank you Mariarosa for sharing your life with us.
Inspiration & Enjoyment ~ All-in-One!.......2007-06-19
What an amazing tale of, not just surviving but thriving, emotionally and physically, the challenges and adventures of one woman's life!
Where to begin: first, it is a well-written book, not the least because it is written in her second language; second, it is an inspiring tale of conquering fear as well as succeeding in a new country; and third, it is enjoyable as it draws the us into Mariarosa's new life and what lies ahead for this adventurous, inventive and inspiring woman.
Thanks for inviting me to live life ~ to 73 and beyond!
A delightful true story of the life of the author.......2006-11-02
This is a delightful true story of a young girl who grew up in Italy. The book takes you from early childhood to boarding schools, marriage,a child and a move to America. The book is very descriptive and give the reader a sense of Italy in World War11 and the difficulties of starting a new life in America. Despite all the hardships in her life, she became a very successful woman.
Raffel's Struggles Growing up in Italy and Adjusting to the American Culture.......2006-10-17
"Ribbons of Blue in My Sky" is a memoir by Mariarosa Pajer-Raffel about growing up during WWII in Italy and the struggles she and her family suffer after war's end. Mariarosa skillfully weaves the story title through the bright spots in her life. The reader journeys with her as she discovers she can depend on no one but herself, grows into a strong individual that refuses to compromise her values and seeks the best out of life while maintaining a positive attitude through the premature death of her mother, being sent to a Catholic boarding school, discovering her father married a women she and her brothers can scarcely tolerate, after graduation lands a good job, mourns the death of a brother in the military, marries a professional soccer hero, has an adorable daughter, deals with a husband who refuses to work after aging out of the game, reluctantly goes to America with him and daughter, hates leaving her wonderful homeland, determines to make the most of her country transition, immediately sets out to learn the English language and blend in with the American culture.
Raffel paints vivid descriptions from a very young age into adulthood, which places the reader in the middle of Italian culture. Her recollection for every detail is amazing and truly gives a sense of her life and courage. She transfers this same style of writing to her life in America with a delightful comparison of each culture.
Ribbons of Blue in My Sky.......2006-08-31
All the hopes and dreams of a young girl as she grows to womanhood. All the joys and sorrow of a well lived life. All the triumph of an indomitable spirit. The author writes with a clear voice and embellishes her story with vivid detail.

Two must-have classic novels of military science fiction are now reprinted in this omnibus edition honoring one of science fiction's most influential authors.
Dorsai, the foundation novel of Dickson's Childe Cycle, introduces Donal Graeme, a warrior in a culture of fiercely independent men and women who discovers within himself talents that will help him change the course of history. The Spirit of Dorsai tells two stories of Dorsai heroes: Amanda Morgan, who must face a military force bent on the destruction of Dorsai culture, and Ian Graeme, who struggles to avert a disaster while he wrestles with grief and rage over his brother's murder.
Dickson creates a complex and convincing political, historical, and social framework inhabited by compelling characters who never lose their blend of humanity and heroism. The Spirit of Dorsai is a smoothly written balance of strategy, tactics, and the individuals behind them that still sets a standard for military science fiction. --Roz Genessee
Book Description
Throughout humanity's Fourteen Worlds, no group is as feared and respected as the Dorsai. The ultimate warriors, they are known for their deadly rages, ferocious independence . . . and unbending honor. No one man rules the Dorsai, but their mastery of the arts of war has made them the most valuable mercenaries in the human universe. Dorsai! is the saga of Donal Graeme, the uniquely talented Dorsai who will change their future forever. And The Spirit of Dorsai, written two decades later, is Dickson's great novel of the women of the Dorsai-in particular, the unconquerable Amanda Morgan. The volume is a pair of military SF classics every fan will want to own.

Great Military SciFi.......2007-03-14
DORSAI SPIRIT(2002) is an omnibus comprised of DORSAI!(1976), which is an expanded/updated version of THE GENETIC GENERAL(1959); and THE SPIRIT OF DORSAI(1979). Here are brief reviews of each of these two stories:
DORSAI!(1976)***** - 250 pages. This is a great Military SciFi story, which covers the early career of the Military Academy trained officer Donal Graeme, who comes from a military family, and from a planet whose main export is military mercenary soldiers. When I get a chance, I want to read the original story THE GENETIC GENERAL(1959), and see what differences accumulated in the 17 years between the release of the two stories. DORSAI! holds up well, but I would imagine that the original would be out-of-date by now, mainly due to the unforeseeable advancements of computer technology since 1959.
THE SPIRIT OF DORSAI(1979)*** - 180 pages (but little white space). Contains two shorter background stories of Dorsai characters... one from the early history of the planet, and another from later history... for some reason, the prologue, interlude, and epilog, which are provided to tie the two stories together, are descibed in italics - making them difficult to read.
A must read to understand Dickson's Childe Cycle.......2006-08-06
Dickson was a great story teller. He wrote some of the best and some of the worst fiction ever. The Childe Cycle was a great idea but was flawed in the telling. Dickson was a plup fiction writer. So his books tened to be fun and have great ideas but they were often unbelievable or had flaws that would be unacceptible today. If you read the series you will read some great books but be aware that the series has some flaws.
military science fiction.......2002-06-08
"Dorsai". Among the fourteen worlds, Dorsai provides one export that is in great demand. The planet consists of the best military mercenaries known in the cosmos. Donal Graeme is about to go off planet with abilities never seen before as humanity has taken a quantum leap up on the evolutionary path. This reviewer read "Dorsai" in the sixties and found it to be a fascinating tale. Though a powerful introduction to the Dorsai culture, the military tactics seem weak in a post Star Wars world. Still Donal is a great character struggling between his differences and his human frailty.
"Spirit of Dorsai": "Amanda Morgan". While the men go off planet to fight, women remain behind to defend Dorsai. Amanda Morgan faces an enemy with one goal in mind, the destruction of the Dorsai culture. "Brothers". Ian Graeme feels guilt for living, grief for his dead sibling, and anger for not being able to keep his brother alive. Preferring to avenge his brother's murder, Ian must first prevent a major catastrophe from occurring. This novella ("Amanda Morgan") and short story ("Brothers") provide more of a historical perspective to the Dorsai, especially Amanda's story furnishing insight into the role of women in the culture.
DORSAI SPIRIT is a compilation of two previous Gordon R. Dickson's books from his Childe Cycle. The stories remain interesting and old fans will rejoice to read them while newcomers will find the tales entertaining. Yet this reviewer wonders why the memories of Mr. Dickson as one of the standard bearers of military science fiction seem weakened at least from re-reading this part of the saga.

Read Them All.......2002-06-07
Gordon R. Dickson, like Robert A. Heinlein, is a master storyteller. If you have never read Dickson's Childe Cycle, then buy and read them all. This is a mythic journey and one you shouldn't miss. The Childe Cycle tells the story of the human spirit, the strength of human relationships, reveals our unlimited potential, and takes you on a "hero's journey." Joseph Campbell would have love these books if he had ever read them. Perhaps he did, who can know. Your library will never be complete without these books in your collection. Both authors caused a major paradigm shift in my own life's vision, values, imagination, priorities, and appreciation for science fiction. Come and join in the journey and you will "soar on the wings of eagles.
Book Description
The Bible is not the word of God. Biblical Nonsense is a broad look at the tremendous problem of associating divinity with the world's most popular book. This part-philosophical, part-scientific overview explores the Bible's divine treachery, scientific mistakes, historical errors, false prophecies, and comical absurdities. Biblical Nonsense also expands beyond these standard reasons for skepticism by tackling the rationale behind the emergence and perpetuation of Christianity, psychological and sociocultural reasons that drive Christians to cling to their beliefs, and illogical methods of argumentation invoked in the defense of the Bible. Author Dr. Jason Long is a former Christian who condenses the most significant biblical problems into this single volume. Unlike other books in the field that delve into only one topic, this manuscript, comprehensible even to those who have never opened a Bible, is a full-fledged attempt to demonstrate that God's supposed word is a product of human minds, not divine inspiration. Dr. Long's fresh experiences in the church and advanced levels of educational enlightenment make him the perfect individual to present this vehemently unpopular, yet undeniably appealing topic.

Nothing new.......2007-09-14
Seems to me I've heard that song before....in Mills, Hitchens, Dawkins et al. I found it a rehash of much that has gone before.
Destruction without substitution.......2007-06-09
This often bitter-sounding author tries to destroy belief in Christ and Christianity without providing something or someone to take his and its place. Faith cannot be destroyed--it can only be redirected.
Only useful for attacking the lowest level of Evangelical Fundamentalism.......2007-05-26
While this book contained some worthwhile material, Dr. Long's rebuttal of Christianity and the Bible is against the lowest level of anti-intellectual Evangelicalism. His understanding of the Bible is no better than your average, untrained fundamentalist. The rational he is attempting to defeat has been forsaken by Christians outside of the Evangelical Bible belt.
While his venture is worthwhile, it has been done with much greater veracity and consideration for the more intellectually affluent Christian apologist.
Nice overview of Biblical nonsense.......2007-01-26
This book presents a clear picture of some of the Bible's historical inaccuracies and oppressive Old Testament concepts. Though it is not exhaustive, it should get people thinking about how intolerant Christianity and Judaism really are supposed to be if the Bible is followed to the extreme that some Christians claim it should be. Everyone associated with Christianity should read this book.
Biblical Nonsense.......2006-11-11
I thought the book was very well researched. It very plainly shows why the Holy Bible is not to be taken seriously or as history as a lot of people do.
It does this by closely looking at the biblical stories and comparing them to what we know in history and also what we know in the sciences.
It obviously shows the bible to be a book of fables.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

As a signage and graphics designer, I have to say that this is one of the most detailed , well-written books I've seen. It is a wonderful collection of both signage and entertainment graphics. Also a great book for both the coffee table and new designers who want to learn about this area of graphic design.

I'm currently taking voice lessons...........1999-05-22
And a few days ago, I saw a copy of the BSB music book. I bought it (of course) for $20 or so and my next voice lesson, I had brought it. My teacher likes the music and lyrics so now I bet he's practicing. I had let him borrow it (and it's PAINFUL.) and before that, I would study and practice singing and following the right key and pitches. It sounds great on the piano and lets me know all the lyrics. I love practicing BSB music, and I bet you would too! :)
Exellent book for all BSB Fans........1999-02-23
I would reccomend this book for all people who love the Backstreet Boys as much as I do.
Great for Piano Players (Which is also BSB Fans).......1999-01-23
I love to play hit songs on the piano, and I love the BackStreet Boys. This book is giving me the notes to their hits, and it's very easy to play. You can sing along while you play the piano too. I'm sure you'll love it !
