Book Description
In Stone Heart, Diane Glancy grippingly retells the story of American legend Sacajawea, the young Shoshoni woman who traveled with Lewis and Clark on their expedition to the West. Presented in Sacajawea's voice in the form of a diary, the book makes moving and illuminating fiction out of a famed piece of history that has long been masked by myth. Glancy adds breadth and immediacy to the story by juxtaposing excerpts from Lewis and Clark's diaries with her brilliantly imagined journal of Sacajawea.
Lewis and Clark recorded the external journey; its physical challenges and its wonders. Glancy's Sacajawea experiences the expedition on a different plane, one in which the dream of a small white stone shaped like a beaver is emblematic of the thin membrane between the worlds of the mundane and the magical. Sacajawea hears the clouds talking, feels the thunderous hooves of ghost horses, and savors the wetness where a buffalo calf licks her arm from the other side.
In Stone Heart, the Lewis and Clark Trail springs back to life in a stunning work of imagination that vividly depicts the day-to-day tasks, ordeals, and triumphs of the famed expedition. At once a trail uncovered and a life revealed, Stone Heart draws a lingering portrait of a woman of resilience and courage.
Customer Reviews:
The Journey of Lewis and Clark from a different perspective.......2005-03-15
This is a beautifully written and brilliantly conceived telling of the Journey of Discovery from the imagined point of view of Sacajawea. Ms. Glancy dispensed with the myths surrounding S's role as guide and simply told of the adventures and rigors of the trip from the point of view of a lonely l6-year old mother with a two month old son and a brutal husband. The juxtaposition of Lewis' journal with the views of Sacajawea was fascinating. I loved this book and will remember its magic for quite some time.
Indian Tales, Historic & Modern.......2004-12-01
I read both this and several other novels by the same author, though none of them is easy reading. They are sometimes not the most exciting read but they are well informed about Indian culture and other aspects of history:perhaps the best is her first novel,"Pushing The Bear" about the Cherokee Trail of Tears in 1838. It is both erudite and historical and contains a great deal of grueling detail about the history of this perilous journey filled with treacherous pitfalls and the grim reality of death; also it provides many details about the Cherokee's animistic religion, dance rituals, language and world view. Revd. Bushyhead, a secondary character, is a Christian minister, formerly a Cherokee; the novel also contains conjurers or shamans. "Pushing the Bear" is a metaphorical way the lead character Maritole, a young Cherokee female, has of describing the difficulties of the journey. "Stone Heart" is about Lewis and Clark's journey up the Missouri and Columbia Rivers in 1807, where Sacajawea a Shoshone Indian kidnapped in her youth served as a part-time guide and interpreter. This novel is notable for its numerous excerpts from Lewis's and Clark's actual journals in the margins, as well as for Sacajawea's fictional musings about various aspects of the trip, including many references to her baby Jean Baptiste, who is often sick, to hunted animals, landmarks, horses and to various Indian cultures. Sacajawea was Charbanneau's husband, a rather brutal fellow. A map is also provided which is very helpful.
The two contemporary novels, "Flutie" and "The Mask-Maker", both set in Oklahoma, were also interesting. The first is about an adolescent 1/2 Indian girl from a family of mechanics in Oklahoma with a developmental disability (she can't speak) who eventually overcomes her disability to become a geology teacher. The novel is good at portraying her day-to-day life as well as her mythical or symbolic dreams derived from her Indian heritage which seem to lead to her interest in geology. "The Mask Maker" is about a divorced half -Indian mother of two who becomes a mask- maker and travels to Oklahoma high schools teaching this art. The latter novel also uses the technique of additional text in the margin to clarify or expand on the main text. Her house and trunk of her car are full of her masks. You will be impressed by Diane Glancy's knowledge of Indian history and religion and culture in any or all of these 4 novels. For example, "Flutie" discusses sweat lodges, while "The Mask Maker" has information on the Pawnees and on Pawnee Bill who was a business associate of Buffalo Bill.
A prose-poem that peers into the soul of Sacajawea.......2004-06-08
I read this book a few months ago and couldn't stop thinking about it. Combining excerpts from the journals of Lewis and Clark with a beautifully written prose poem written from Sacajawea's point-of-view, this book, although fiction, gives a realistic voice to the women of this story.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to feel what it must have been like for a women to travel with this group of explorer's on their journey across America.
Sacajawea Deserves Better.......2003-03-10
The mythical status of Sacajawea is seductive indeed, and Diane Glancy attempts to fashion a novel that gives that myth a much needed rest, trying to get into the voice and experience of the "real" Sacajawea, but as always, language is the heart and soul of any recreation of historical voice, and here is where voice fails Glancy. The writing simply is not good enough. The second person narration makes the character a bit too literary, a bit to fashionable, leaving this reader bored by its simplistic syntax and unimaginative detail. Who knows what Sacajawea thought and dreamed! As Irish poet Eavan Boland suggests, one improvises when faced with this mystery. The improvisaiton here is uninspired. The fragments of journals from the expedition, rather than moving the novel along, impede its flow. This novel is considered experimental, I suppose, but the experiment fails. Why? Because the voice and language fail.

Book Description
She called him cowboy. He called her princess.
Caitlin Summers had come west for one reason only: to sell the Wyoming ranch that had belonged to her late father. But Cloud Ranch wasn't hers to sell--not as long as foreman Wade Barclay and his two brothers were majority owners. According to the will, Caitlin couldn't sell her share until she'd lived there...for a whole year! For the debt-ridden Philadelphia beauty, the situation was intolerable. She never imagined that the rough, infuriating wrangler would awaken every tender emotion buried in her heart.
To Wade Barclay, Caitlin Summers was just a spoiled society girl--even if she was also the daughter of the man who'd been a father to him in all but name. Caitlin had broken her father's heart when she and her mother left Wyoming, and Wade had no intention of letting her do the same to him. But living together under the same roof was hard on a man. One stolen kiss was all it took to make him wild with wanting her. As the days passed, Wade knew he desperately needed Caitlin--in his bed, in his heart, and by his side forever in this wild, beautiful land he knew she'd never call home.

Cowboy romance .......2006-11-17
Set in 1870s, Caitlin Summers has come to Wyoming to sell her late father's ranch. Her father and mother divorced when she was a child and she has not seen her father since she left for the East with her mother. Her mother also recently died in an accident with her stepfather. Left destitute and left with a younger half sister she has no choice but to sell her late father's ranch. Not that she ever had any emotional attachment to it or her father.
Upon her arrival in Hope, Wyoming, Caitlin is met by the ranch's foreman, Wade Barclay. Wade is not only the foreman of Cloud Ranch but he was also like a son to Caitlin's father when the latter took in Wade and his two younger brothers when they were orphaned. Caitlin's father also gave a share of the ranch to Wade and his brother's. In the father's will, he states that Caitlin is not to sell the ranch unless after she has lived on the ranch for a whole year. Being faithful to Caitlin's father's wishes, Wade refuses to let Caitlin sell her share of the ranch before the year is up. As Caitlin moves into the ranch, she and Wade slowly discover their hidden passion for each other.
This was a good Western romance. I liked Wade alot as the dark brooding hero but at times I found Caitlin to be a bit annoying with her spoilt ways and the way she hated her father with a passion. All together a good read and I will be looking for more Western's written by Ms Gregory.

LOVED IT!!! JILL GREGORY IS A GENIUS!!!.......2006-04-14
This book was the most romantic and cute hate/love story. I love the setting and I love how bold Caitlin was. Wade's character was irresistible and women (including me) couldn't help but fall in love with his patience and caring side, when it came out. This is a definite five, and I'd give it more stars if they allowed.

I started reading and didn't stop till it was finished!.......2006-02-10
No bad language and a wonderful story made this a captivating read for me last night. I highly recommend this book
One Of Her Best !!.......2005-03-28
I fell in love with the chacters the moment I read this book.. I could only hope for someone that sweet and caring to look after me.. Jill has an unique way of writing making the reader feel very comfortable and longing for more.. This book is a keeper on my shelf and from time to time when I want a good comfort read this is were I turn... Please keep up the good work Ms. Gregory..
Couldn't put it down.......2001-03-13
I just read this book over the weekend. I should say I read this book on Saturday. I could not put it down. This is the second Jill Gregory book I have read. The first was Never Love A Cowboy. I liked both books but this one really caught and kept my interest. It had all of the elements, Love/Hate relationship, romance, intrigue, suspense. I didn't want it to end. The only thing I would have liked to have seen differently is if they would have elaborated on the other characters in the book.

entertaining.......2007-01-23
An entertaining book, written to keep the reader engaged throughout. It is not a stand alone book though. I haven't found the other books yet, but there seems to be a book that goes before, and it needs a book after as well, as there are several loose ends left dangling at the end.
He just didn't get it.......2006-01-12
This book is really about growth and discovery. The mix of mystery and sci-fi really works and knowing how Jack's mind works with his relationship to Billie really matures the series. Can't wait for the final book in the series. The previous reviewer has no clue and provides nothing useful.
Pretentious.......2006-01-05
This is so bad it's almost good. They sell it like it's Raymond
Chandler in space - but it's more like Raymond Chandler partially wrote a suicide note, got even more depressed, went for a walk, and then - in his absence - Ray's cat jumped up and down on the typewriter and completed it. Jeez.

Be Inspired.......2007-09-03
This book is small, but mighty! It is amazingly simplistic yet provides a wealth of inspiration for creative inspiration. The photography is breathtakking.
I think that with practice you can master the cookies, marzipan, gumpaste and fondant decorations in this book. Piping royal icing flowers is a bit more daunting. I would suggest a class or video for royal and butter cream icing flowers Wilton How to Make Icing Flowers DVD because they can be a bit tricky (at least for me.)
This book provides six basic recipes for cookies, cakes and frostings. My hope is that you are purchasing the book for decorating ideas and instruction, not for the recipes. The author's decorating syle is clean, but very elegant. The book provides a strong decorating foundation -- you can use this as a springboard for your imagination.
This is the perfect book if you want to make your first decorated cookies or petit fours. If you are making your first tiered cake this book will provide inspiration, but you may need to supplement it with other sources for complete instruction.
Artistic.......2007-06-08
This is another of those step-by-step cake guides that was very well worth the money. This particular book kept selling out at Michaels so I had to go online and purchase. Definitely not disappointed
Great resource!.......2007-05-20
I just got into cake making and sugar craft and this book is the first I ordered. It is great and I've had a lot of success following Porschens' advice. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that not all temperatures and cake pan times needed are included. For example, I made a cake from two square 8x8 pans and the only baking directions I could find were for either cupcakes or a sheetcake. Instead of baking at 400 degrees as suggested I lowered the temp to 350 and just kept checking until done. Still came out great, thank goodness. The basic cake recipe tastes wonderful with the soaking syrup (I'd never tried that before)but the sugar cookie recipe was a little bland. Beautiful cookies though! I REALLY like this book and will be happy to take credit for Porschens beautiful dessert designs for years to come!
Really pretty party cakes.......2007-05-08
One of the best. I own a lot of cake decorating books and this is one of my bibles. As somebody said, it's looks as good inside as looks outside. Porshen work is so fresh, clean and neat that you can not stop checking it over and over. I do not like make recommendations, but either if you are a beginner or a professional, you will love this book
recycled ideas.......2007-03-31
I flipped through this book at our local library. I started out being pretty impressed because the book is nicely done, but then I started seeing a lot of recycled ideas from various American cake and cookie artists. That was rather disappointing.

Success With Ralph.......2004-12-07
Of course, I haven't read this yet as it will not be available until March but I know Mr. Laughton (sort of, we both post on the same woodworking forum) and he is one talented individual. His posts and advice on the forum are always spot on and he writes in a way that is very understandable. Should be a great read.

Customer Reviews:
Fine........2006-08-22
As the name of the book indicates, this is a romanticized version of British Colonial style. The photos are fine. They are meant to look misty and antiquated. The book is pretty but superficial. For a real substance and a true understanding of British colonial style, please refer to British Campaign Furniture by Nicholas A. Brawer.
I wasted my money on this.......2004-10-07
Ok, so I read the other reviews, and since I'm in love with the style, I bought the book thinking it was going to be beautiful. At worst, I thought, I'll get one or two ideas from it. I got the book, and I couldn't believe my eyes. All the photographs look like they were taken with a 1 megapixal camera, then blown up to page size. I had read in a review that this is a "picture book." Well, there are a lot of photos, but they look like a pointalist's painting -- you can seriously see every dot of color throughout the entire photograph. I could not believe this was actually a published work. And the composition is awful. Either the photographer takes long shots of entire rooms that are boring and plain or close-ups that show you one chair and doesn't give you a clue how it would work in a room. I do not recommend anyone spending their money on this.
A Gorgeous, romantic style of East meets West.......2001-04-28
This is the definitive book on british colonial style. It shows the relaxed, romantic, and exotic sense of blending eastern and western styles, cultures, and manners. If you love England at the turn-of-the-century combined with exotic Asia and Africa, you will love this book. The photos are beautiful, with lovely captions and explanations for the style. Even if you don't decorate with this style, you will love it for the photos and armchair travel. Gentlemen's clubs, polo games, verandas, picnics, ....I love this book!

Interesting subject.......2002-11-25
I was surprised to find out that Ms. Christie herself had a mystery surrounding her disappearance in 1926, so I was interested to find this book. But I would have called it, "The Agatha and the Ecstasy."
The most interesting and unique mystery I've ever read!!!!!.......1999-04-09
The queen of mystery biggest mystery was her own. It was incredible to me to find out that Agetha had a mystery of her own that she could not solve. Doctor Owens approach to solving Agetha's mystery was fascinating and a real page turner. It was the most uniqe books I've ever read. Using Agetha history and passages from her books to coherently solve a previously unsolved mystery was a stroke of brillance. Dr. Owens takes us on an intelletual ride that keeps you interested from the first to the last page. The solution was so satisfing that I felt 100% confident that the ultiment mystery was finally solved. YOU WILL HAVE TO READ IT FOR YOURSELF TO BE LET IN ON THE SECRET! The solution and writting is something that Augetha would be proud to have authored herself 5 STARS!
We are the publisher of The Lost Days of Agatha Christie.......1999-01-07
The Lost Days is not an easy read, but if you are interested in solving the mysteries of the human mind and the mystery of Agatha Christie's disappearance in 1926, The Lost Days is a very satisfying experience. Author Owens, a therapist, has done a very interesting thing, she has taken Agatha on as a client and the therapy session solves a seventy-year-old mystery as no one else ever has including the great Queen of Mysteries, Agatha herself.
