Book Description
The fourth book of the trilogy, "Strange Dreams", appears to have been completed on the artist's birthday in September, 1996, but that's only because you can do what you'd like with time when you're printing books yourself. To be honest, he was actually trapped in Paris with an ear infection on his birthday. The books were safely boxed and sitting here at StoryPeople, waiting for his return.
"I'd always planned on doing a trilogy", he says, "but I didn't figure out that meant I'd have to stop at three. So, I've developed a more relaxed attitude towards trilogies than people have been used to in the past..." The ninety, or so, stories in this book include some of his favorites, including 'Simple Rules' and 'Hindsight' ("I didn't listen to her beacuse she was my mother & wouldn't know anything until I was much older").

Brian Andreas' work is always so amazing. His words are so simple, yet poetic, funny, and true. When I read his stories, I find myself either crying, laughing, or searching myself. I love how he can take a regular situation that many people fail to hold sacred, such as sitting with a loved one on a summer's night, and turns it into something profoundly beautiful.
Wisdom in simplicity........1999-11-30
The thoughts Brian Andreas captures and illustrates for us seem like they could be from anyone's life, and many struck a chord from my own. There's some sibling rivalry, parental joy towards children, the stirrings of love, the reality of the working world, and some things that defy categorization. The artwork, at first glance, looks like something a parent would stick on the fridge after pre-school, but on further viewing strikes a very grown-up sense of balance with the verses penned above, below, and around the pictures. If the prose doesn't have you laughing out loud, it might make you sigh, smile, or think back to a memory the words evoke in your own experience. Overall, this was a wonderful read I'll be recommending to friends and buying for family.

Brian Andreas' poetry was displayed on his "story people" in a local art store; I wish I had a house big enough to cover the walls with his work. His "stories" are one or two-liners that seem pulled from a delightful dream to instantly wrap around your heart. It's not always clear if they were written with the musings of an adult or the wisdom of a child, but be careful - you may catch yourself laughing aloud with a tear in your eye.

Debra Webb returns to the mystery surrounding her son's kidnapping and eventual return in this enjoyable read. Victoria Colby-Camp hires Daniel Marks to investigate the murder of Homicide Detective Carter Hastings after her son, Jim, is accused of the murder. Carter's daughter, Emily, insists on participating in the investigation and soon the plot complicates as Victoria is forced to re-evaluate all that she has known about her first husband and Jim's father. This Colby agency book, along with "Striking Distance" (in which Jim first appeared as an adult), are darker than some of the prior Colby agency novels. I would recommend reading some of the prior novels first, particulary "Striking Distance", as the plot could be a bit confusing to a newcomer to the series. "Colby Conspiracy" is a thrilling addition to the series and fans of the series will enjoy reuniting with many of the familiar characters of the past. In addition, one of the bonus features of the book is a section updating readers on what is going on with the characters from the previous novels in the series.

Though she is honored to be Chicago Woman of the Year, Victoria Colby-Camp is more euphoric over the mental improvement that her son Jim has shown recently especially since he and Tasha North fell in love. Jim was snatched almost twenty years ago when he was seven and turned into the killing Seth whose goal was to murder Victoria for abandoning him. However, her elation would turn to despair if she knew Seth resurfaced and started to rape a pregnant Tasha.
Former military strategist Daniel Marks is in town complements of the Colby Agency that wants to hire him. Also in Chicago is Emily Hastings whose father a veteran homicide detective was murdered. She finds letters linking her dad to Victoria, the woman's long ago murdered first husband James, and her dad's first partner Marelyn Rutland that confuses her. Soon she will meet Daniel and they will be embroiled in the COLBY CONSPIRACY that goes back almost two decades ago.
Though the subplots can become confusing at first, once the audience comprehends how this complex superb suspense thriller starts to come together, they will want more Colby Agency tales; (see FILES FROM THE COLBY AGENCY: THE BODYGUARD'S BABY PROTECTIVE CUSTODY). The ensemble cast is solid as fans will feel with Victoria who has overcome so much tragedy, hope Jim "defeats" Seth with Tasha at his side, and root for Daniel and Emily to make it while wondering what really happened two decades ago. A final twist marks a strong Webb of deceit tale that showcases a fine author on her A-game.

The Separation or the Perception of the Fall.......2006-11-11
I became aware of this book after reading the book by Kevin Williams' called Nothing Better Than Death. Specifically the NDE by Mellen-Thomas Benedict. His NDE experience goes all the way back to the "big bang" of the physical universe. His NDE journey has many other interesting enlightening experiences along the way. I am glad I own a hard copy of this book.
Great overview of near death literature.......2006-11-08
I stumbled onto this book after losing my Mother. I didn't want to read just one author who might overload me with his own set of beliefs on the subject. I wanted a representative and reasonably objective overview of the subject, and that is just what this book delivers. It covers the full range from uplifting stories of light and love and ultimate understanding on the other side to academic essays on the cultural and religious significance of near death imagery. You get believers and nonbelievers, scientists and saints between the covers of this collection. I read the whole book and am rereading it now. For a skeptic who really wonders where her Mom is now, it is comforting and thought provoking without being saccharine or preachy.
Great Book.......2001-07-17
I read this book for my Anthropology of Death course. It is the best book that I have read for any of my classes. It looks at all aspects of death, it integrates different opions from doctors, psychologists, and other people who have had near death experiences. It discusses the stages of dying and the NDE. It was a great book. It gets you thinking about what could be beyond.

Excellent recipe collection in large print.......2006-12-01
This edition, published in 1985, is a selection of recipes from the larger Fannie Farmer Cookbook. It consists of 520 recipes covering appetizers, soups, fish, meat, poultry, bread, cookies and other subjects. There is no background information on how to cook or to select foods. The print is large and very readable. It would be suitable for all ages from children to older people who desire a larger print cookbook. There are no pictures. The recipes, as in all of the Fannie Farmer editions, are excellent. Recommended for those seeking a cookbook in a large print format.

My bookshelf is stuffed with paperweight reference books. Whenever I have a question, this book comes out.
Sure, some of the information has changed through the years; but, this book is what laid the foundation for a lot of our recent discoveries and findings. This book is a must have for any paperweight collector.

If I were abandoned on a desert island with only one paperweight reference book, it would be this one. While is it certainly shows its publishing date and does not have some of the pretty color pictures of more contemporary works, it is redeemed over and over by its scope and breadth of coverage that few other reference books can match. There are a few places where more modern scholarship might have come to differing conclusions but that is the nature of all study and research.
This reference book should be part of any collector's library and represents such a small investment for its lasting value and broad coverage of paperweights and their makers.

Although this book contains a few tidbits of information that are useful to an avid paperweight collector, overall it is dated and omissive even for its time. It really has nothing in the way of quality photo's and information that hasn't been done better in more modern books.

If you are only going to invest in one book -- this should be the one! In addition to instructions to create classic and creative candles, there are great explanations of wax types, molds, safety precautions, and more. All this information is presented with words of encouragement and enhanced with well-photographed examples.
Boring, and not much help to beginners.......2003-02-24
De. Bob should stick to soap. His candle making book is not for a beginner who just wants to know the basics in simple terms and get started. Although I am sure some of the information will be helpful to the more advanced, it was not what I was looking for to get started.
Essentially Most Useful.......2002-10-30
I was first struck by the photo content. It seems that procedures to make every common type of candle (and several uncommon ones as well) are fully illustrated with lots of photos that make reproducing the results extremely easy to follow. Not only that but the authors helped to dispell my bewildernment over the many, many ingredients available on the market which are useful (or not) for producing special effects. For instance, the suggestion to forget gloss ingredients and use higher temperatures in making the candle is simple and highly practical.
I own or have looked through almost every candle book on the market, and I think this one is clearly the best resource book available. I just wish it were longer.
Finally, to my surprise, I discovered that this is the only book that is recommended by my primary ingredient supplier. They seem to agree that it is the most factual and accurate book on the market suitable for those getting started as well as for those needing more info as they scale up.

Ingredient selection for candles can be baffling, but Dr. Bob covers the gamut and tells which work or when there is a better way to do things. Lots of projects with easily available equipment as well as how to use fancy molds, or even make your own molds! Over 250 beautiful color pictures make procedures and results easy to understand. The section on how much wax is needed for a particular mold is invaluable, and I personally love the section on wax characteristics.
The FAQ is quite complete and look for tips on the best ways to make or avoid mottled candles, glossy candles, and which special ingredients can be replaced by the right technique. This is a valuable book for scout leaders, first timers, and experienced candlemakers alike. But then, what would you expect from the authors of Essentially Soap.

This quote,(pun intended), describes Essentailly Candles to a "T". Starting with the history of candles,then proceeding to choosing the correct wax, wick and additives, then to the projects and great photos, Bob and Kate McDaniel have done an excellent job of teaching basic and advance skill in candlemaking. The book is easily read, the projects are illustrated with great photos and it is packed full of information useful to either the novice or more experienced candlemaker. I found the infomation on color, blending techniques, wax quantites for molds and differences and uses of various waxes to be most informative and helpful. I have made candles for over 20 years and still learned many new and useful things from this book.There are many books with pretty pictures and directions for projects. Essentially Candles not only gives the projects and the step-by-step directions but also offers the foundation information necessary to explore other possibilities. A must have for anyone wishing to know the why of candlemaking.

Better books out there but this has lots of photos.......2006-05-29
I've read a lot of decor books about color. I consider this book barely average. This book is filled with photos of rooms with color swatches used in the room. I often found myself trying to find the color of the swatch in the room. Many times I was not successful. For example, on page 116, the bottom left photo has a lilac color swatch but I did not see any lilac in the room. The sofa, the focal point in the room is a salmon color. There is no salmon color in the swatch.
The book DOES have lots of photos, which is always nice. There are some good-sized photos of some rooms, then renderings (not photos) of the same room elements in various color schemes. Sometimes the renderings work better than at other times. For example, page 30-31 shows a stair and entry/hall area. The renderings are a good representation for possible color choices. Less effective were pages like 62-63 and 130-131, maybe because there were too many elements in the rooms.
There are color swatches pages with only 6 swatches per page. This means sample colors are an adequate size (page 120-21). There is a section on faux, paint and textural techniques. This section included info about the suitability, materials needed to create the look, cost (low, high), time required to create (moderate, high) and a short paragraph on tips of how to do it yourself. There are no step-by-step instructions, just tips.
It seems to me that the publishers may have thought more was good, but even more was better, but for me there was just TOO much in this book. It was as if it was trying to be too many things at once and not doing any of them well.
If you are looking for help in selecting colors for rooms, I would recommend: Color Schemes Made Easy (Better Homes & Garden) by Shelley Stewart (one of my favorites),
Color Harmony by Hideako Chijiiwa (Warning: sample colors are very small but nice book), Color Your Home Beautiful by Martha Gill (gorgeous vibrant colors, fantastic photos) and Color Solutions by BH&G (Several solutions in this Q & A format. Lots of great solutions and information for your color projects). There are even more books on paint and paint techniques but these are just books on color. See my reviews for details about each of these books.
