Read by David Hyde Pierce

"I came into the world like everything else that is born, willy-nilly."

So the wise old housecat Foudini begins the delightful story of his life. It is the tale of his orphaned kittenhood; of how he was rescued, cowering and spitting and hissing, from a damp city basement and lured into the lives of the couple he came to call Warm and Pest ("All cats like to make up strange names for things" ).

It is the story of how Warm and Pest became "his  people" ("Human beings must be excellent mousers; they have such patience");  of how he learned to tolerate and then to love "his"  dog, Sam; and of his adventures at Cold House in the city and Mouse House in the country (he prefers Mouse House, for obvious reasons). With feline equanimity, he tells how he was saved from a racing, swollen river; of how he lost the most unlikely and dearest friend he had; and of how he gained a cat family of his own. And he regales us with news of the ghost cats who visit him in his dreams--the cats of Cleopatra and Freud among them--bringing him their ancient cat wisdom, which Foudini tries, none too successfully at first, to impart to Grace, the sleek and beautiful gray country cat new to the household. As Foudini sees it, Grace is desperately in need of his guidance, but being young and willful, she has other things on her mind . . .

Yet even Grace comes to understand that Foudini M. Cat is well worth listening to. Warm and witty--and possessed of a surprisingly sophisticated narrative manner--Foudini is a cat with truly irrepressible, and irresistible, feline flair.

"In the beginning," Foudini M. Cat explains, "I was not a housecat. I was born in a wall." This wise old cat tells his life story for the edification of Grace, a young cat new to the fold. His story includes an explanation of the behavior of his Assigned Persons, whom he calls "Warm" and "Pest"; the tolerance that evolves into love for "his" dog Sam; and charming memories of his orphaned kittenhood. Treated to fine feline philosophy, we learn that Foudini considers cats' reputations for aloofness and vanity completely undeserved: "what we ought to be celebrated for is our ability to exist alone and to dream." In his dreams Foudini visits cats of the rich and famous--Cleopatra and Sigmund Freud--and applies (with sometimes comic, sometime positive results) their advice. All this he tries to impart with generosity and warmth to Grace, who is, alas, "demented with youth." Though easily distracted, far more interested in catnip or naps in pooled sunlight, Grace does manage from time to time to talk back or pay attention.

Susan Fromberg Schaeffer, author of 10 previous novels and a National Book Award nominee, has created an endearing narrative voice--refreshingly unsentimental and completely charming.

5 out of 5 stars "...every word of it true".......2006-09-30

Like my own cat, Foudini was a housecat. The only time Foudini escaped, he nearly drowned himself and his dear dog. My cat lived with me for his whole fifteen years and was very much like Foudini: intelligent, wise, careful and dearly loved. I found Foudini's autobiography just after my cat had to leave me and it was just wonderful to read a whole book written by a cat. To see what I knew to be true about how cats feel about each other, and their people and other animals in a book written by a cat and to read about their dreams was a wonderful thing. I would say that this the book to give to any friend who has just lost a cat because, it is, just as Foudini says "...my story written by myself, every word of it true."

5 out of 5 stars Niles should have been paid just as much as Frazier.......2005-08-16

David Hyde Pierce turns the Audio Version into a work of art. His urbane persona lends a very humorous aspect to the cat, which would otherwise have been a far more mundane protagonist. Accented renditions of the dog, and Freud's cat are particularly praiseworthy.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2005-08-13

I love and adore cats! I love reading about cats! But, this book left me so disappointed! Don't get me wrong Foudini was adorable. I enjoyed his voice as well as that of HIS dog. They were sweet friends and I truely adored them both. But what in the heck was the author thinking!! First off, her time line was a bit askewed. Foudini's people had owned Foudini for at least a few years before they had their own child. Then the child grew up and moved away. I will assume to college which would make him at least 18. After the child moved away Mr. Foudini jumped on their new cat Grace and fathered a batch of kittens!! I can't believe an author would write about unnuetered and unspayed cats! I'm sorry I cannot relate or condone the breeding of housecats. All the unwanted and destroyed animals in the shelters these days and Foudini is out fathering kittens at a ripe old age! I was disgusted really! That whole ending basically ruined an otherwise very sweet book!

5 out of 5 stars Need a good cry?.......2004-11-13

This is one of those great books that make you behave in a manner you really don't think you should. Towards the end of the book I was nearly sobbing, which is pretty embarrassing to admit. Cat lovers will be amused and moved by the view from the cat's eye, of it's world. We sometimes forget how they might see our actions.

I highly recommend it, to all animal lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Christmas! Than anything! Foudini is great!.......2003-09-02

A friend gave me this book while I was in bed with the flu. I wasn't thrilled by reading a book about a talking cat, but boy, was I surprised! I read this book from cover to cover stopping only to drink my orange juice and swallow my echinachea, but honestly, I think it was the book that cured me. While my own cat had disappeared somewhere else in the house, I had Foudini to keep me company, and what a companion he was and is! Aside from being a hilariously funny book, this book gave me a great deal of solace. There are times it's easy to doubt the use of other human beings (I include myself here), but the love between Foudini and his dog Sam, and especially his devotion to his owner, Warm, brought tears to my already burning eyes. If a book like this can have such an impact, I'm ready to believe in miracles. I've bought a stack of new books hoping to find the same thing in other books, but I think The Autobiography of Foudini M. Cat is probably one of a kind. That cat is a real human being!

Courtesy of Love Romances Reviews

Lori Handeland pens another winner in the Luchetti Brothers series, with this, the story of Bobby.

Bobby is missing in action, possibly dead, as far as his family knows. He's a member of US Special Forces and has been deep undercover for several months. He's about due for leave when he finds out the woman he'd been writing letters to... the woman he loves... has married his brother. When a new mission comes up for a solo operation into Mexico to rescue a kidnapped doctor, he jumps on it.

Dr. Jane Harker is deep in the heart of Mexico, practicing medicine in one of the poverty stricken towns. She couldn't be happier with her life until the day a big burly man claiming to be there to rescue her, sneaks in to her bedroom and saves her just as someone tries to murder her.

Now they must journey across Mexico, on to Washington, DC and finally to the Luchetti Farm in Illinois. As they try to get to the bottom of the mystery and keep Jane alive, neither counted on the all-engrossing love that would spring up between them, changing them forever.

The mystery weaving through the story will keep one guessing through the end. There are enough twists to the plot that when the mystery is solved, the reader will be surprised at who is guilty. It's obvious the author did her homework when researching how the military works, especially Special Forces. A Soldier's Quest is packed with action/adventure, suspense and romance.

Bobby is nursing his broken heart when he meets Jane, therefore the attraction between them shocks him. Jane was happy, in spite of her overbearing mother, a US Senator, and perfectly content to live in the middle of Mexico giving medical aid. She has no plans to do anything differently, until Bobby saunters in to her life. The love that develops between them changes their lives forever.

This reviewer has been eagerly awaiting Bobby's story and was more than pleased by A Soldier's Quest. Readers have learned so much about Bobby from his family in previous books that they already feel like they know him. When he is finally reunited with his family, the emotions overflow from the pages and right in to the hearts of the readers. Fans of this series will love the opportunity to visit with the large Luchetti family once again, but will be sad at the same time, as they realize there is only one more story left to tell, that of Dean, oldest of the brothers.

If one is looking for a full rich story, with lovable characters and a swift moving plot, this latest one the Luchetti Brothers saga will satisfy.

    3 out of 5 stars Fairly Decent.......2001-08-25

If I could I would actually give this book 3 1/2 stars, but it doesn't quite rate four. I love cats and love Starbridge novels, so in many ways this should be right up my alley. I did in fact think it was a decent read, and after a few false starts (the Starbridge novel before this one really disappointed me, so I was slow getting into this one) it managed to hold my attention well. I appreciated the various issues brought up because of the romantic interest between the two lead characters. I have no idea what would happen in real life if two alien species became attracted to each other, but in some ways at least this seemed to do a decent job of considering that. Some of the story did seem a bit too... predictable, maybe? However, the end still held some surprises, which I appreciated. This isn't the best book I've ever read, but (particularly for Starbridge fans) it's not bad.

4 out of 5 stars Alien Scarlet Pimpernel fights prejudice and finds romance!.......1998-08-10

The latest addition to the StarBridge universe is a tale of a young human translator sifting through complex undercurrents in an alien culture where lying is a political art form. Caught in a cultural crossfire of numerous factions fiercely protecting their own interests, Magdalena Perez has only her friendship with Khyriz, a member of the royal Arrekhi family, and her sixth sense about people lying to her, to help her ride out a civil war. For the Arrekhis have an old secret--the oppression and degradation of the Asha, a race visually different, yet as sentient as their own. Well-written, forbidden romances point up differences and similarities between sentients as Magdalena and Khyriz fight for the lives and freedom of a literally silenced race. Good alien culture, and the StarBridge frame supports rather than interferes with the space adventure. One of the best StarBridges yet.

    5 out of 5 stars Interesting Idea!.......1998-03-04

This book brought many great ideas to light... not all the problems that we face today, have been stopped in the future... there are still cults, and there are still problems medicine can not erase. The characters were very well done, and the descriptions allowed me to visualize the scenes. I think Magdalena Perez was a very believeable character, and that having her overcome such problems, brought more dimension to her character.

3 out of 5 stars Good idea but it just doesn't live up to expectation.......1998-02-20

The plot behind this book looked so good when I bought this book. Unfortunately the actual execution of the plot was less than satisfactory. I found the main characters, Magdalena Perez and Khyriz, to be weak one dimensional characters. Perez is the abused as a child heroine and Khyriz is the underestimated younger son of the emperor. Perez has some type of empathic powers which are mentioned in the beginning but pretty much ignored throught the rest of the book. Khyriz is "surprisingly" the only one of the royals who was able to recognize the danger to their panet and attempt to do something.

Now Crispin and Emerson do have some very good characters in this book, Zhik and An-Lieye, but they are woefully underused. Too many of the conflicts should have been seen by the characters and avoided and so make this story that much more unbelievable.

      Book Description

The Message Rediscovered is undoubtedly a work that draws heavily on inspiration. And it calls for a discerning reader, one capable of recognizing a knowledge of unity as old as humanity itself; a knowledge of holiness; a knowledge of salvation. The Message Rediscovered might equally be called The Mystery Revivified: no longer taught by the heavy hand of historians, but experienced, assimilated and lived in the simplicity of the heart and of the spirit. One must know just how to leaf at random through these pages of phrases «condensed like liquid air», and therefore surprisingly easy to read, where not a single word is superfluous, but all is arranged in a unique sense that does not reveal itself on a first reading. You will enjoy this book if you prefer the thing to words, unifying wisdom to multifarious science, awareness to delirium. These verses are not impenetrable, but speak only to that part of us that is the most essential, and often - alas! - the most neglected or the most despised. Louis Cattiaux was born in Valenciennes (France) on 17th August, 1904 and departed this world in Paris on 16th July, 1953. He was a painter by profession and lived unknown among his contemporaries. Cattiaux wanted Le Message Retrouvé to be published first in English, but his wish could not be fulfilled: the first complete edition appeared in 1956 in French. Le Message Retrouvé has since been published on several occasions in French, as well as in Spanish, Catalan, Italian and Portuguese; a German translation is in preparation. Here, then, at last The Message Rediscovered in English, for the safeguard and salvation of those exiled in this world.

5 out of 5 stars A book that offers the key of the restitution of man in God........2006-04-19

Many are those that have leafed through it distractedly; they are surely unaware that there exists a forgotten Message, and also a lost Word.
A few, however, attracted by a certain Scent of Truth, have taken the time necessary to read it and ponder it. They can confirm that the Message has indeed been rediscovered.
Certainly, it is not new, and that is, paradoxically, what makes it original. This fact, moreover, did not escape Ren? Gu?non.

It is not new, we were saying, in the sense that is authentic, always deriving from the Origin and therefore identical via the great chain of the Masters of Knowledge.

If you doubt what we are saying here, then take the trouble to examine it, this renewed Message, if you have the patience, and, leaving your prejudices to one side, you shall realize that, in modern language, what is expressed here is the eternal prophetic Message of the Sages of humanity.

                                          Book Description

Minimalism is perhaps the most popular design approach of our time. It is often misunderstood, because it appears so simple - and yet it requires a great deal of competence to get by with just a few stylistic devices and still create an impressive outcome. The variety of minimalist realization makes use of the possibilities that art and design offer as well as the means of architecture. Only the symbiosis of all three elements creates the perfect outcome that is a space with a highly effective atmosphere and a very visual character. This book fully explores the variety of minimalist projects in art, design, and architecture.

                                                          Book Description

Rather than limit the minimal to being a type of visual art, the curators of Minimalisms: A Sign of the Times conceive of the minimal as a way of life, as a spirit that impregnates nearly the whole of modern culture and its surroundings. After an exhaustive overview of classic Minimalist works by Dan Flavin, Frank Stella, Agnes Martin, Carl Andre, and Elsworth Kelly, Minimalisms looks further, at artworks by Andreas Gursky, Candida Hoffer, Richard Serra, Jean-Marc Bustamante, and Gunther Forg, architecture by Peter Zumthor, Dominique Perrault, Claus En Kaan, and Rafael Moneo, furniture designs by Donald Judd and Shiro Kuramate, and fashion designs by Anni Albers, Donna Karan, and Issey Miyaki. Linking them all is a simplicity of form and ornament, a technical precision, and the essential and concrete nature of structure.

                                                            Book Description

Anni Albers (1899 - 1994) was one of the most influential textile designers of the 20th century. Born in Berlin, in 1922 she became a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where she met her husband, Josef Albers. From 1933 to 1949 Albers taught at Black Mountain College. The fifteen essays gathered here illustrate Anni Albers's concept of design as the pursuit of wholeness -- "the coalition of form answering practical needs and form answering aesthetic needs." This beautifully illustrated book addresses the artistic and practical concerns of modern design and considers the ever-changing role of the designer.

Albers's work is in private collections and in those of leading museums both here and abroad. Among them are the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard University, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Museum Neue Sammlung in Munich, the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin, and the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York. Her previous books include On Weaving (1965) and On Designing (1961), both published by Wesleyan

Less familiar strands of the history of modern art are often obscured by the canonical history of Western abstraction. In rethreading them, Abstraction: The Amerindian Paradigm ascertains the unfolding of an abstract art that was born of a cross-fertilization with the indigenous arts of the Americas. The abstract forms that have emerged from practices such as weaving and ceramics, which the West has long deemed "lowly crafts," are reread, challenging the dominant assumption that abstract art is a prerogative of the modern West. The uncompromising geometry and bold colors of ancient Andean weavings--insistently characterized in ethnographic and art historical discourses as decorative--are heralded here as the textile paradigm of abstraction, a grid that precedes by millennia the Western modernist grid. Between the 1920s and 40s, Paul Klee, Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Josef and Anni Albers, Barnett Newman, and Adolph Gottlieb led the way in gazing at the ancient American arts. Later, Louise Nevelson, Alfred Jensen, Mathias Goeritz, Tony Smith, Helmut Federle, and South American artists Libero Badii, Francisco Matto, Gonzalo Fonseca, Eduardo Ramirez Villamizar, Alejandro Puente, and Cesar Paternosto, as well as textile artist Lenore Tawney and poet/artist Cecilia Vicuna, had significant encounters with the Amerindian arts. In their accompanying essays, Cesar Paternosto focuses on the emergence of an abstraction rooted on the indigenous arts of the Americas; Lucy R. Lippard writes on her experiences while researching the rock art of New Mexico; Mary Frame discusses the cultural resonance of textile structural forms in the ancient Andes; Cecilia de Torres narrates the story of the pioneering trecks to pre-Columbian sites by Torres-Garcia's disciples; and Valentin Ferdinan discusses the formative aspects of modern culture in Latin America.

Fred Allen, who lived from 1894-1956, is best remembered for his feud with Jack Benny and a skit on his own radio program in the later years, "Allen's Alley", which featured four dwellers of various ethnic backgrounds responding to Allen's news of the day question. This book by Robert Taylor came along in 1989, 40 years after Fred's radio show ended. The book examines Fred's life from childhood on through vaudeville and radio...it also examines why Fred was a 'radio' comedian and not a TV comedian. his relationship with corporate america was strained to put it mildly. his ad-libs about network vice-presidents and censorship had him in constant trouble with network executives. his bitter relationship with NBC's censor is recounted: several of his shows would abruptly end in mid-sentence because the censor found something offensive. at times his satire was so biting that NBC would often demand re-writes. he wrote his own programs with a little help from writers that might sub-mit ideas. His entire radio era, 1932-1949, is examined and each program is given some print. "Town Hall Tonight" was his major program from 1934-1939 on NBC and on CBS it was "Texaco Star Theatre" from 1940-1944. Hypertension forced him off the air in 1944-1945. When he returned to radio in the fall of 1945 he debuted a new skit, "Allen's Alley", which featured announcer Kenny Delmar as 'Senator Claghorne'; later versions contained the other classic dweller's of Parker Fennelly as 'Titus Moody'; Minerva Pious as 'Mrs. Nussbaum'; and Peter Donald as 'Ajax Cassidy'. Alan Reed would later appear as 'Falstaff Openshaw'.Taylor also talks about why Fred's radio show ended in 1949. Much is made of Fred's hatred for TV but ironically from 1954-1956 Fred was a regular panelist on "What's My Line?". Fred's life with Portland Hoffa, his wife, is recounted from the day they met until that fateful day in 1956 when the police found Fred's body along the streets of New York. he had a heart attack while strolling through the street near Carnegie Hall.this book gives you the complete picture of Fred Allen, one of the most brilliant ad-libbers of his era and he in many ways was the David Letterman of the '30s and '40s with sarcastic, dry wit about the establishment. Letterman's frequent jokes about his own network (CBS) is a direct result of Fred Allen doing the same thing on NBC radio...only thing different is that Fred was the first to do it and suffered the most for it as does any trail-blazer.
