Book Description
Reprint of this sexualized version of the classic. Bram Stoker's Dracula was heavy with the repressed sexuality of the Victorian age; here, the sexual undercurrent surfaces and slinks wryly to the center of the action. Dracula is not the cretinous lurker of Herzog's cinematic Nosferatu: he is a sexy beast, a powerful being who takes pleasure from drinking blood and also delights in domination, bondage, spanking, and S/M games.

Dracula, spankings, and floggings...oh, my!.......2007-02-16
I think this is the best novel of the Darker Passions series (I also highly recommend the retelling of Dorian Gray, which is now sadly out of print) and even some of the best Victorian Erotica in general. There's so much eroticism in the vampire myth, coupled with the veiled sexuality of the Victorian era... Bram Stoker's Dracula is perfect for retelling with a BDSM twist, and here it's done very well. Not only is this novel erotic, it's high quality fiction in its own right.
Yes, there's spankings, floggings, canings, birchings, Dominance/submission, discipline, bondage and other things that "delicate flowers" might find objectionable, but those are very common themes in Victorian Erotica; no one should be suprised to find them here. And one does find them here, in abundance. This novel embraces what it is (the fetish cover of this 10th Anniversary Edition is a nice improvement on the cheesy vampire that graced the original cover) with great enthusiasm and that's what makes it such an enjoyable read. I've read it several times since it was first published and will surely read it several more.
It may not suit the taste of all those interested in vampires and Dracula, but it's certainly required reading for anyone who likes Victorian Erotica and especially BDSM fiction.
The Darker passions: Dracula........2007-02-12
Another no star book. It does have s&m. Does that help????????
wow!.......2004-07-09
This is the first time that I had ever read a book like this and, oh my, was it good! It's kind of hard for some people to picture the story of Dracula as a love story but it was! Just with a lot of S&M. Ms. Knight really brings the S&M bit that you never hear about to life with details that will make your imagination run wild! I so recommend this book! You won't be able to put it down!
An awful lot of spanking.......1998-07-20
This book is definately geared toward the S&M scene. I was expecting a reworking of the Dracula story with a more modern, open minded sexuality. Instead it was one paddling after another, and then some whipping. The book was pretty much one long string of S&M 'sex' scenes with little else inbetween.
Jonathan goes to castle Dracula -spanking- ,he leaves -more bondage. Dracula goes to England -a lot of spanking and more hard core S&M. They all go to Transylvania -even more discipline.
The end is awful. Doesn't even really finish the story, just finishes.
What was the point?
A world where forbidden lust is being aroused.......1998-04-02
The author has wonderfully twisted the orignality of Bram Stocker's Dracula. A fiction that writes on the arousal of forbidden lust of individuals such as Mina Harker through spanking and erotica caressing. On a personal preference, reading would be more stimulated if it is being written in a third party perspective rather than the "I" perspective.

Touching love story.......2006-07-14
This is the first book by Emily McKay that I have read and I lived it. I love that the hero is laid back and easy to like unlike in many other romances. The heroine is also easy to like but a bit more reserved then the hero. This story tells how friendship and learning repect of each other can lead to the most amazing love. If the circumstances hadn't been the way they were then I doubt that these two would ever have found love together.
BEAUTIFUL STORY - WITH ISSUES.......2006-04-27
Finally, Kate Bennet realizes that her baby is more important than her job.
Jake Morgan had agreed to donate sperm for Kate Bennet to become a surrogate for her sister, Beth and her husband, Stewart.
But, lo and behold, Beth gets pregnant - highly improbable but not impossible.
Kate has issues, she doesn't trust Jake to hang around. Ah, but her job as judge is in jeopardy because of her out-of-wedlock pregnancy. So she finally asks Jake to marry her. A marriage of convenience only. HaH!
Oh, but the marriage does have benefits. Oh,yeah!
Both always seems to put their foot in their mouth to cause some sort of misunderstanding. But hey, that makes for a lively story.
You will love the characters exchange of communications - although I find Kate's more than human issues a bit dragging - but I still have no complaints plot wise.
Definitely Recommended --
Another great read from Emily McKay!.......2006-04-06
What I enjoyed most about SURROGATE AND WIFE was the well developed characters. Kate's emotional struggle over whether to keep the baby or give it to her sister (whom she was originally carrying it for--but discovers the sister is pregnant too) is very real and very well-written. Jake (the baby's father)...and no, not the sister's husband, but the husband's best friend (I hope that makes sense), wants to keep the baby AND Kate. Getting Kate to agree is fun to watch. It's a heart-warming story with real issues and a great ending. Buy it!

Just a lovely story.......2003-07-09
I really enjoyed this book. You share the tension that is built up between the two characters. I fell in love with the characters and found the book to be unique.
New twist to romance.......1999-12-09
This book was about a woman who was wrongly accused of murder and sentenced to to serve the rest of her life with the husband of the wife which she was suposed to have murdered, and if the two were to fall in love she would be sentenced to death. Well I know you can see where the story leads but the way they went through the hard ships of tring to get along. Meagan knowing she was innocent and Josh wishing and hoping she wasn't guilty. Trouble from the start, love in the end. Truly a must read.
Imaginative Story Line, but a little prdictable.......1999-11-16
I really enjoyed this story. I mean we all know how it is going to end, but the way in which they are forced to deal with each other is very unique. I have not read this particular plot before. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how it ends, but a good easy read.

Scattered throughout the galaxy are Gateways capable of transporting matter and energy across unfathomable distances. Left behind by a long-vanished civilization, these mysterious portals offer a means of exploration -- or conquest -- many times faster than warp travel. The technology responsible for the Gateways has been lost for at least ten millennia, but that doesn't mean it can't be found again....
Having defeated the hostile computer program guarding an abandoned Kalandan outpost, Kirk and his crew are exploring the artificial planetoid in hopes of discovering the secret of an ancient apparatus that has hurled the Starship Enterprise over nearly a thousand light-years. Unfortunately, the reactivated Gateway has attracted the attention -- and avarice -- of various alien explorers, including a mysterious race who claim to be none other than the enigmatic Kalandans themselves!

Book Description
In The Reinvention of Work, radical priest Matthew Fox draws on a rich legacy of great mystics and philosophers and proposes a spirituality of work. As Thomas Aquinas said, "To live well is to work well," and in this bold call for the revitalization of daily work, Fox shares his vision of a world where our personal and professional lives are celebrated in harmony--a world where the self is not sacrificed for a job but is sanctified by authentic "soul work."
Customer Reviews:
Personally appealing, largely impractical.......2005-08-22
In The Reinvention of Work, Matthew Fox brings together the work of Eastern and Western mystics, ancient, medieval, and modern, to propose a new paradigm for how we work and what we do. Citing Meister Eckhart, Thomas Aquinas, Hildegard von Bingen, the Bhagavad Gita, Tao Te Ching, Studs Terkel, Patch Adams, and progressive economists, Fox explores the concept of work and how it can be healthier physically, emotionally, and intellectually, but primarily socially, environmentally, and spiritually.
Fox believes that the Enlightenment and the industrial age have left us with a machine-centered, anthropocentric world that focuses on outer work and rewards at the cost of inner work and spirituality, and destroys rather than creates. Real wealth results from preserving the health of the planet, not in the artificiality of money or possessions. The result has been a world often at war, where the gaps between affluent and poor continue to spread, where the environmental health of non-industrialised nations is sacrificed for the comforts of the industrialised, and where the work that is available and that most people have serves machines and leaves the worker stressed, addicted to work, ill, angry and even violent, and unfulfilled intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.
Fox cites mystics like Eckhart and Aquinas to show that they understood what is important and that they prophetically understood the traps that man is prone to fall into. He also recounts the stories of people who reinvent themselves through work, who are willing to sacrifice position and possessions to find an avocation that matters, like the man who gives up a high-paying position to become a fireman and who is ecstatic about the meaning it brings to his life.
Fox carefully sets up all that is wrong with our modern concept of work and, indeed, life, since so much of who we are, how we feel, and how we live is tied up in what we do for a living, or what we mistakenly call "work." His proposed solutions are centered around creation spirituality, which is a "creation-centered mysticism that is also prophetic and socially transformative." While creation spirituality is not very clearly defined here-Fox has written several other books about it and refers to them-it appear to center around the idea that creation comes from within and that we create our world, which is part of a greater, interdependent cosmos that continues to undergo creation. For Fox, "enlightenment" might mean recognising and embracing creation spirituality and our responsibility and role in the ongoing creation of the cosmos-a recognition that begins with inner work and extends outer work, and that redefines wealth and poverty. Fox is quick to point out that this is neither communism nor socialism, both of which suffer from the same destructive values as capitalism.
There are many elements involved in creation spirituality, which embraces many aspects of life that have been neglected, distorted, or abused, from education, health care, art, psychology, and sexuality to something he believes is critical yet missing or misused-ritual. In creation spirituality and the reinvention of work, properly conceived and performed ritual is meaningful, bringing people together, bringing out emotions, and acknowledging what has been done in the name of war, destruction, and hate. Ritual can also be playful and energising, for example, circle dances. Whatever the focus, ritual brings us together to share our common joys and sorrows. Ritual heals.
Mysticism appeals to me, and Fox's assessments of what's wrong and what could be done to change our course make sense and are supported by the quotes he provides from a broad array of sources, including psychologists, economists, writers, and artists. The consequences of not changing are clear, but it is equally clear that those consequences have not penetrated to either the masses or their leaders. (Even the rising price of gasoline in 2005 has not inspired any more than cautious apprehension.) We are like smokers who are able to quit our habit only when terminal lung cancer has been diagnosed.
To get billions of conditioned consumers (and their consumers-in-training children) to give up their increasingly complex lifestyles, comforts, and amusements in the interest of a healthier, more just world for all and for better personal mental and physical health requires a utopian change that most people will not embrace. As with the Woolgers in their book, The Goddess Within, Fox tries to find a movement in the mid-1990s that has not materialised yet. Generally, people do not choose to change; they are forced to. Perhaps someday, when the gaps have widened too far, and society and our home can no longer support our appetites (and the corresponding waste), we may be ready to listen to Fox and his adherents, at which point they will need to provide practical answers. Who will "make ritual"? Who will produce the necessities and how? Who will distribute them? How will they be paid, or what will replace a monetary/barter economy? What if there is imbalance between what people want to do and what needs to be done? In practical, everyday terms, what does the reinvention of work look like? And do I want to live long enough to experience the disasters that are likely to be required to bring it about?
Eckhart, Aquinas, von Bingen, the Bhagavad Gita, Tao Te Ching-all wise beyond their times. And beyond ours as well.
Diane L. Schirf, 21 August 2005.
Discerning between the "practical" and the essential.......2003-11-17
This book is potentially personally revolutionary and is imminently practicable, no less so than any manifesto that has had an impact on human development. "Inner work," of course, is the key, and this is exactly where I believe many may cringe and cry, "Impractical!" Who has the time and inclination to work on him or her self when modern social institutions and technologies fill our lives so effectively? Isn't it obvious that human advancement and improvement will be provided by science?
I am not satisfied with this complacency and I know for a fact that there are many who are disillusioned with the modern worldview, yet not despairing. Many courageous spirits crave breakthrough, and feel that it is their birthright to achieve something more in their lives than what is currently available. Spiritual sustenance and a good life are not impractical, but necessary! This book provides some wonderful nourishment for the soul and states clearly just how a good life is possible for EVERYONE.
Is Fox an egomaniac? I believe ego (in its popular sense) can be healthy and liberating if it is used with discretion and for good purpose. And it is abundantly clear from his presentation that Fox derives his ideas from a wide variety of sources, and that his ideas are founded on a spiritual tradition that is 2000 years old (along with some others that stretch even further back in time!) He is not a New Age pundit going his own way; but a man of deep faith and spiritual experience who has the gift to put into words what we already know in our hearts.
So please read this book, begin your own "inner work," and receive the gift of transformation that is always possible, no matter where you may be in your life.
The Reinvention of Work: A New Vision of Livelihood for Our.......2001-08-02
The Reinvention of Work changed the way I view work. As a Career Counselor I realized new ways to work with clients. The book helps one go deeper into understanding what we are really all about in relationship to work. It is not a self-help book and does not profess to be one. The book helps us step outside of ourselves and to consider what is important to each of us in our work beyond the paycheck. It truly creates a vision of what our work life can be if we take the time to listen to our inner wisdom.
Positive, uplifting, and not terribly practical.......1998-03-20
Like most of Fox's books, this one ranges from the sublime (the cosmic implications of "true work") to the ridiculous (there's nothing sillier than a celibate priest writing about sex). And Fox's ego is far too much in evidence at times. Still, I'd recommend this book to anyone who's trying to rethink their relationship to "work." I picked it up at a time when I was undergoing immense life and career changes. Although it wasn't much help in practical decision-making, it did give me a fresh perspective on how my values related to the jobs I'd had (they didn't), and got me thinking about how I could translate them into work I felt better about. Also, although I'm a former Catholic and hypersensitive to writers who try to force their doctrinal perspective on you, I felt that Fox generally managed to be spiritual without being sectarian (that's probably why he's no longer a Catholic!). In general, this book has a lot to recommend it, although keeping your tongue in your cheek at times is strongly advised.

Book Description
Being on the migrational flyway for ducks and geese, the upper Chesapeake Bay has long been a center for waterfowl hunting. Where there is hunting, there are, of course, decoys. The area around Havre de Grace, Maryland has produced some of the most prolific decoy makers in America. Usually born of the necessity of the hunt, their decoys have become highly collectable. In Upper Chesapeake Bay Decoys and Their Makers, David and Joan Hagan share their talent for photography with the reader. They illustrate the art of the decoy makers in this area with beautiful images of the birds they have formed. Usually their decoys are accompanied by the portraits of the artists and recollections and reflections on their art and experiences. Over eighty decoy makers are represented in Upper Chesapeake Bay Decoys and Their Makers. Many of them are still alive and active in their work. The decoys illustrated range from early decoys, faded and worn smooth with use, to recent decoys which go directly from the artist to the collector without ever touching the water. All of them show the skill of the artist and evoke the appreciation that has made the decoy a central theme in American folk art.

UPPER CHESAPEAKE BAY DECOYS AND THERE MAKERS.......2007-06-10
great history of the old timers and younger decoy carvers and hunters, what a history to read, thats how it all started and is still alive to day, for time takes no toll on this art. the carver may pass over the bar but the decoys shall remain into the future.
Customer Reviews:
great designs, too.......2005-11-15
this, and another of her books, _crazy eights_, have enough wonderful designs and ideas to keep me busy for years--and they could be combined.
the instructions are first rate, templates in various sizes are included at the back, and also illustrated instructions for rotary cutting. both books use her kite-shaped ruler.
ms. suit shows how simple but imaginative piecing can be dazzling with the right color choices.
since this is primarily a book on piecing, the instructions for finishing a quilt, while quite good, are minimal (though she has a great tip about NOT using moisturizing soap for marking).
would be good for any quilter with at least some piecing experience to advanced quilters.
A New Twist on Triangles.......2003-02-16
Excellent directions. Great patterns for artistic wall hangings. I recommend buying her triangle ruler for her patterns as it's quite helpful. Lots of good ideas and different color suggestions. Accurate piecing directions.

Book Description
This engaging book and the exhibition that it accompanies are the first to look closely at Winslow Homer's avid pursuit of fly-fishing and at the inspiration that the sport provided for his art.
It was fishing that led the eminent painter to three of the locales with which we now associate his name: the Adirondacks in northern New York State, Florida, and Quebec. Each of these distinctive regions elicited unique and strong reactions from the painter, which took form in works that are brilliant studies of light, atmosphere, and the spirit of place. At his favorite fishing spots, Homer worked in the traveler's medium of watercolor, stretching it ever more boldly and unconventionally in order to convey the intensity of his experience of nature; his response to light and atmosphere peculiar to a given region, a specific season, and a particular time of day; and his feeling for the physical and psychological demands of his favorite sport.
Homer's fly-fishing paintings are an immensely varied and little-understood aspect of his art. They serve as a counterpoint to all his other work, especially in the decades of the 1880s and beyond when fly-fishing represented a regular and sustained activity for the artist. Homer's fishing watercolors suggested to him new subject matter, inspiring or at least intensifying, for example, his interest in commercial fishing and in the lives of the men and women who live by the sea. And his fishing expeditions offered recreation, rejuvenation, solace, and camaraderie, which spurred his imagination. The intense visual experience of fly-fishing afforded Homer a close involvement with nature's mysterious details, revealing new worlds of color, form, and dynamism. He also found through fishing new outlets for his work, new patrons, and an audience of Victorian-era sportsmen who could "read" and comprehend his pictures. 110 illustrations, 80 in color.
Customer Reviews:
Winslow Homer: Outdoorsman.......2003-08-17
The art is amazing. And the book is a fine academic effort at explaining Homer.
However, each chapter is authored by a different writer and not every chapter is equally well-crafted. This individual essay format also thwarts any attempt to present a cohesive story arc.
In the end, I still wonder exactly why the outdoors meant so much to Homer; none of the author's fully or successfully explained that crucual detail.
Also, by limiting the book to fishing, the authors have excluded a major portion of Homer's sporting life and artistic inspiration. His hunting pictures are among his most commanding and they get little or no attention in this book. Sport of all sort seems to have informed Homer's life -- and art -- throughout the year; a book simply about his angling art therefore fails to provide a full picture of the man, his life, and his work.
But the stunning art alone is worth the price of admission.

Book Description
