Book Description

An American legend rewrites a remarkably contemporary Adam and Eve. In tackling the first three chapters of Genesis, Twain creates a story of The First Couple who are psychologically familiar to even 21st Century Americans. He wrote the Diaries as a tribute to his own marriage, so they are also his most heartfelt and personal work. Between 1893 and 1906, he attempted six versions; only these satisfied him and were published in his lifetime.

This expanded edition is • beautifully illustrated • faithful to Twain's final rewrites • faithful to Twain's wish that the two tales be "bound together" • and includes passages published for the first time.

unique and intriging. fun and fast to listen to. very creative.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2007-05-09

I came to this book by way of a banned books list (The Diary of Eve has been banned in some schools). I was hesitant to read it; high school didn't make me a fan of Twain but I can finally say that I have a favorite book by him. I'm glad I decided to go ahead and 'knock it off my list' because both these 'diaries' tell a sweet love story. This is what a romance novel should be!

P.S. My religious beliefs fall under "eclectic paganism"; you don't have to be Christian to enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift for Next Valentine's Day.......2007-03-29

We got this CD because we had seen THE APPLE TREE (which is based on THE DIARIES OF ADAM & EVE), and wanted to go back to the source. The source is beautiful, a love story like none other. And what a perspective on the Bible. Now we'll have to buy the book so we can put our own voices to the text.

5 out of 5 stars Treasured.......2007-01-06

My spouse and I loved this book so much we chose it as the only reading in our wedding, and so I completely agree that it would make a great wedding or anniversary gift. It is perhaps the best thing Twain ever wrote, because it is everything: hilarious, tragic, cynical, tender, and hopeful. Apparently, Twain started this before his wife's death and came back to it again afterwards, which I think is why there is so much passion and reflection in the story. There are earlier versions that were published in serial format and are also worth reading.

In essence, this is the first and the last love story, as Eve says. And so it is also everyone's love story. The development of Adam and Eve's relationship is the main focus here, but I disagree that Twain's views about God are not here, too. Whereas Adam seems content to just follow orders, it's Eve's questioning of God and The Fall that adds such depth to the story. This piece really is about the best and worst not only of the human race, but of God as well, told in a way that makes you realize why Twain is probably the best writer this country will ever see. It's only a 45 minute read, but it's one that you'll treasure.

    3 out of 5 stars Escapism extraordinaire!.......2001-12-13

While some parts of the book could use some grammatical polishing, the plot is intricate and leaves the reader yearning for more. A true exercise for the imagination and a chance to leave your daily worries behind and escape into a fantasy world painted in beautiful colors. Emotions are described in such detail that the reader will feel them along with the character.

    1 out of 5 stars positively pukeable.......1999-08-08

I could hardly get through the first chapter in this sorry excuse for a romance. I know these books are Idealistic, but the people were just too perfect. The detail on the perfect parents and even more perfect kids was so ideal I couldn't stand it . That in combination with the fact that the parents saved the earth, humbily so, made the whole scenerio sickening. And the grand finaly was the enderement "moonbeam", that was it,I just about lost my lunch.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for Whovians and general science fiction readers alike.......2005-04-25

Social commentary and insight disguised as a science fiction dictionary of a timeline that may exist. Ignore the fact that this timeline is an offshoot of the Doctor Who world and you will see insight that delves into ones own perspectives on time, war, and life in general. Embrace the fact that this is a timeline offshoot of Doctor Who, and you will find yourself manically attempting to figure out the many, many ways this links the novels to the current television series (I estimate this war has yet to end, but the destruction of Gallifrey caused by this war has already occurred). Fun read for fans of Who and general science fiction readers alike.

      5 out of 5 stars A Dictionary-Novel extraordinaire!.......2004-01-17

Much like Milorad Pavic's _Dictionary of the Khazars_, this is a Dictionary-Novel incredible in it's complexity and execution. The novel is about groups of time-traveling cultures engaged in a War to rewrite history to their own ends. Although this may sound silly, the intelligent prose of the authors and the rich structure of the plot make this book a great reading, not only to sci-fi fans, but for all good-literature lovers.
It is also a deep reflextion on our own culture, values and conceptions. I would recommend this book to anyone who's looking to try for something different.

5 out of 5 stars God's method of handling finances.......2007-02-16

I think this book nails it when it comes to missions giving and receiving. All of us, if we're Christian, whether we are missionaries or not have a responsibility to live in faith with our finances. Loren shows how its always an adventure and always ends in greater blessing when we live on the edge with our finances. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Living in faith, not fear.......2004-02-18

Bought the book in 1999 and browsed through quickly. I thought I understood what the book was saying but obviously not. I simply did not act upon it. It took God at least two years to get me into the habit of consistent tilting. What God have taught me is money is no small matter. This is where God's testing our hearts before anything greater is given. I pray over how to distribute the tithe. Show you are serious and God will be serious with you. God would love to help you direct where your money goes because in the time of your needs, he will help others direct their helps to you! I strongly feel one way of testing if you are ready for effectively doing God's work is to see if you ready trust God in your fiancee, just like what's demonstrated in this book. I also recommend the book by Robert Morris, the Blessed Life, from Gateway Church at Dallas.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ FOR ALL CHRISTIANS.......1999-11-20

The book is simple and easy to undersatnd. It brings out clearly that God is in charge. It talks alot about finance but the real mesage is that once you put your faith in God, you will see God working miracles in your live.

Just Buy it, no regrets !

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject of money and faith I've ever read!.......1999-03-25

The practical examples in this book of living by faith are extraordinary. Once you've read this, your perspective of living in absolute dependency on the Lord, will surely change.

      5 out of 5 stars A life changing book!.......1997-10-28

Loren, in his own challenging way, hits us were it hurts concerning our finances. If you want to know how you can be financially active for the Lord then read this book - You will never be the same again. Many of the illustrations are from Loren's own life which make it even more special and real. For myself as a missionary I was challenged about my own giving and also encouraged about going out to live on faith. God asks for our lives, our money is part of that - read and be challenged. Thanks Loren for a wonderful book indeed.

          5 out of 5 stars 50 Popcorn Recipes.......2002-08-13

This book has 50 tasty popcorn recipes, ranging from the sweet to the spicy. My family enjoyed the sweet ones the best, but the spicy ones were the office favorite. There are many recipes that I never even dreamed of, from Onion Patch Popcorn to Iced Tea Popcorn.

I would highly recommend this book if you are tired of plain old popcorn and want to spice (or sweeten!) things up!

          4 out of 5 stars WOW! A POPCORN BONANZA!!!.......2002-07-24

It's gonna take a long time, but I am determined to try at least 31 of the 50 ways to pop and enjoy corn that this little gem of a book suggests you experience. So far I've got 11 tried and marked, along with comments from me and my family and friends who were here when the popping took place. Nine trials got basically thumbs up while two have black X's across their recipes and probably will not be used again. But, what fun!! Suprise your folks with a different taste every time, BUT, DO NOT LOAN OUT YOUR BOOK! I did and it took 3 weeks to get it back. Happy popping!

I like the martian. I made one for the fourth of July and then blew him up with a firework tank and we used a piccolo pete for the scream.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing color changes.......2003-04-04

This book is a little different from most of John Montroll's earlier books (and later books). Fans have been known to say that these models do not seem quite as realistic as many of his others. But they have missed the point.

As the title suggests, this is inside-out origami. In other words, both sides of the paper are visible in the final model. This allows for a different level of detail (such as an actual chessboard).

Like Montroll's other books, all models are made from a single sheet of square paper. However, these models really look best if the two sides of the paper are not the same color.

A fun and fascinating addition to any origami library.

5 out of 5 stars Change, Change, Change........2002-10-29

This is a very good book with models that have good color change. The racoon, cow, bluejay, and of course the chess set are excellent models. All models are from one square of paper and the diagrams are very clear just like all of John Montroll's books.

                    3 out of 5 stars Multi-coloured origami.......2001-08-21

This book is noteable for the origami chess set, which includes instructions for all the pieces and also features a very clever design for a Chess board. The chessmen are very easy to make. The board is more challenging and before you even start it, there is the further challenge of finding a piece of paper big enough to be folded down to a fraction of its size and still be usable as a chessboard.

The animal designs all make use of paper that is coloured on one side and white (or a different colour) on the other. The results are generally good, however the detail given to producing the tiger's stripes means that sacrifices have been made elsewhere. The end result is a rather unrealistic model. It suffers greatly in comparison to Peter Engel's stripeless tiger.

There is a lovely elephant. Montroll seems to have a thing for elephants and the design in this book is my favourite. The Canada Goose is another well thought-out design, making good use of the dark and light sides of the paper. The penguin model is better than the one in Origami sculptures I've made about ten of them. I like penguins.

The book begins with three terrible creations - a ghost, a 'martian', and a snowman. The latter is guaranteed to terrify small children. There are also a few geometric shapes to fold - worthy but boring.

But the chess set - the chess set is amazing, and if you lose any of the pieces you can always fold some more.

4 out of 5 stars Unbalanced book, with true pearls in it........1998-11-11

It is a challenge to make the model colorful, useing two sides of a standard origami paper. Montroll shows us many wonderful examples. A complete chess-set and an incredible chess board constitutes the most exciting part of the book, as well as some well-designed animals. But the pace of the whole book seems unbalanced, with too many boring models in the first half of it

                        Book Description

Who were the main actors in propagating Christianity in China? Where did Christian communities settle? What discussions were held in China, concerning Christianity? These, and many other, questions are answered in this reference work, which is divided in a systematic part and analytical articles.

This handbook represents a true reference guide to the reception of Christianity in pre-1800 China. It presents to the reader, in comprehensive fashion, all current knowledge of Christianity in China, and guides him through the main Chinese and Western sources, bibliographies and archives.

The scope of the volume is broad and covers a wide range of topics, such as theology, philosophy, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, cannon, botany, art, music, and more.

                              Book Description

On October 15, 1880, with great excitement and fanfare, two Sarah Bernhardts set sail for New York from Le Havre for a theatrical tour of the United States. One wanted to introduce French culture to a backward country, and the other wanted to make money. As an actress, she behaved in a fashion that amused and scandalized her audiences, and as a woman, she was an unwed mother and a shrewd businessperson. Bernhardt's multiple personas and "otherness" were what fascinated the American public; her name, her eccentricities, and her genius had already made her world famous.

Sarah Bernhardt's first American theatrical tour, from her arrival in 1880 to her return to Europe in May 1881, is chronicled here. She traveled as far west as Kansas City and as far south as New Orleans, all the while sparking cultural commentary about her performances, her artwork, and her lifestyle. This book provides an overview of the contemporary reviews, caricatures and satires, considers Bernhardt's reception by the American press and American audiences, and discusses the way in which the Bernhardt iconography was created and the assumptions that underlie it.
