Book Description

Artfully imagined, intricately detailed, eerily poignant: these are the outstanding features of Carol Goodman’s literary thrillers. She is part novelist, part craftsman—and The Drowning Tree is her newest masterpiece.

Juno McKay intended to avoid the nearby campus of her alma mater during her fifteenth reunion weekend, but she just can’t turn down the chance to see her longtime friend, Christine Webb, speak at the Penrose College library. Though Juno cringes at the inevitable talk of the pregnancy that kept her from graduating, and of her husband, Neil Buchwald, who ended up in a mental hospital only two years after their wedding, Juno endures the gossip for her friend’s sake. Christine’s lecture sends shockwaves through the rapt crowd when she reveals little-known details about the lives of two sisters, Eugenie and Clare—members of the powerful and influential family whose name the college bears. Christine’s revelation throws shadows of betrayal, lust, and insanity onto the family’s distinguished facade.

But after the lecture, Christine seems distant, uneasy, and sad. The next day, she disappears. Juno immediately suspects a connection to her friend’s shocking speech. Although painfully reminded of her own experience with Neil’s mental illness, Juno nevertheless peels away the layers of secrets and madness that surround the Penrose dynasty. She fears that Christine discovered something damning about them, perhaps even something worth killing for. And Juno is determined to find it—for herself, for her friend, and for her long-lost husband.

1 out of 5 stars Silly and Pretentious.......2007-05-23

From the get-go this novel was pretentious. Other reviewers have regaled this book for its intelligence, but constant references to Ovid and Dante seemed like rubbing the readers face in the authors research. The storyline about Penrose and the two sisters was awash with mythology that weakened the idea. A more straightforward telling could have made it intriguing. The underwater garden could have been so cool under different circumstances.

The protagonist's thinking and actions seemed disjointed. To not see Neal for well over a decade seems unbelievable. Was he sentenced to the institution, or there under his own volition? It was never explained why Juno didn't keep track of him even if he had tried to drown her and Beatrice. Why did it take days or weeks (couldn't get a grasp on the passage of time) to read the snippets of notes found around the stained glass? It wasn't a novel, for goodness sake. In the end, Juno faced betrayal by two very important people in her life, and the author didn't use it properly. She didn't make the reader feel the betrayal, or care. The ending was preposterous.

I didn't like this book at all. It was a book club selection for this month so I made myself finish the book. The middle really bogs down, and the ending is almost unconnected to the rest of the novel. Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars the best one yet!.......2007-04-10

I've read Carol Goodman's other 2 books "The Lake of Dead Laguages" and "The Suduction of Water" and I found that "The Drowning Tree" is the best one yet. I just picked up "the Lake of Dead Languages" in Target one day while I was at work and read it and just loved it. So I searched for Goodman's other books and found that when i read "The Seduction of Water" it was also good, yet not as good as the first. Yet, when I read this one, I feel it topped the other two. I especially love how it references greek mythological stories, in which i find intriguing. The end was the best part, I couldnt put it down. I'd be up until 2am reading this and I knew I had class the next morning. haha. Im disappointed it's over though. It has still got me thinking about it. The ending was a surprise to me. I never would have guessed that that person was Christine's murderer. Well enjoy reading and I hope her neext two books are just as great. : )

3 out of 5 stars high hopes- not quite fulfilled.......2007-03-29

I read this book while I was on vacation on the banks of a lake. Its suspense and atmospheric qualities drew me in for most of the book but i found the resolution to be a disappointment. Later, I read "The Lake of Dead Languages" and it was just wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars A myth-based introduction to personality disorders.......2006-12-10

This is a two-piece mystery. One piece happened a century ago; the other occurs at the beginning of the story.

One of the main characters, Christine, does some research about a stained glass window, and comes up with some rather bizarre information about the founders of the women's college that she and her friend Juno attended. Then, Christine disappears.

Juno is the central character of this novel, and she is truly a neat character. A single mother who has survived some truly awful stuff but managed to keep it all together, you're with her as she Nancy Drew's her way through this story, closing off open ends in her own life at the same time.

The side characters in this book (esp Juno's relatives and coworkers) are the only fun characters in this book. Many of the central characters are a bit too melodramatic for my taste. But having been around the arts crowd, I believe the characterization to be believable.

I really enjoyed this book, and would recommend to anyone who has a day to read. Have some good cappuccino handy, though. They drink enough in the book that you want some before it's over.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2006-04-14

I have a very simple review. This is by far the best, most haunting book I have ever read. A week after I put it down, I was still dreaming about it, thinking about it, wondering and worrying about it. It stuck with me for a good long while. I recommend it to everyone.

        5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC!.......2006-10-07

Lorraine Heath has a classic on her backlist. Excellent story about two people who did the best they could with the knowledge they had at the moment. Nine years later they are reunited and their secrets cause complications between them and the two children they love.

        4 out of 5 stars Great! .......2005-01-14

I thought this book was great and worth reading. There were a few plot elements I didn't care for, but they weren't significant enough to hender my enjoyment of the story. Jack was a wonderful hero and I liked the unique plot twist concerning Kelley and her sister.

5 out of 5 stars A great book from the romance genre.......2004-12-23

I am new fan of romance books and Lorraine Heath. I am so glad I decided to try these types of books. If people take them for what they are, they will enjoy these books. Lorraine Heath knows how to write. She comes up with interesting characters that are believable. You care about the people in her stories. You want them to be happy. This book is no different. I thought Lorraine Heath's portrayl of Madison was spot on. She acted like a trouble teen girl. It seemed real. Kelly's emotions toward Madison was great too. I loved Jack. He was a real guy. He wasn't phony like the male characters seem to be in some romance books. I recommend this book to all fans of this genre.

        3 out of 5 stars A Good Read..........2004-09-15

But it just lacked something. It had great storyline with "second chance at love" being the main premise. The problem was I had no connection with a few of the characters namely Kelley and her sister Madison. By page 100 I was fed up with that whole storyline and felt that it was taking away too much from the main plot which was Jack and Kelley finding love again.

This is not to say that the story was not good, and Ms. Heath's debut contemporary was mildly entertaining once you got past the whole teenage angst issue. Jack was a great hero with plenty of patience for both ladies in his life.

Ms. Heath is a very talented author and one that I would highly recommend to the romance reader. This is just not one of her best efforts and if this is the first time you've ever read her I would suggest the follow up to this story "Smooth Talking Stranger".

        4 out of 5 stars Really a four and a half........2004-05-16

Jack was truly a stand up guy. He took responsible when he didn't have to. He also had a deep love for Kelley that never wavered even though he sacrificed nine years of his life for it.

This is where I had a problem with Kelley. What she made Jack do all those years ago was wrong, for everyone involved. She never gave him the benefit of the doubt or allowed him to check any further to verify what the truth really was. Sadly for everyone involved he was the one who was right all along. Kelley allowed her own past to force something that screwed up many lives. She knew Jack would do anything for her simply because he loved her so much and wanted her to be proud of him.

But I liked Kelley in spite of herself and Jack is the kind of man we all hope we're lucky enough to find!

I've already ordered the sequel for this one!

5 out of 5 stars Peggy Moreland does it again!.......2000-01-27

Those McCloud gals are at it again, and this time there's a new sister to add to the fun and romance.

Champion barrel-racer Lacey Cline is determined to find her father, Lucas McCloud, and let him know what a lowdown, dirty dog he undoubtedly was for abandoning her and her mother. Her own mother resented her for the mere fact that she resembled her father, so Lacey grew up believing that she wasn't wanted by anyone, and that has left a huge hole in Lacey's heart. When she arrives at the Double Cross Heart Ranch, itching for a fight, Lacy not only finds out that Lucas has been dead for several years, but that she has a ready-made family, including three half-sisters. The McCloud gang immediately takes Lacey into their fold, whether she wants to be or not. When her horse accidentally comes up lame, Lacey is forced to stick around the old McCloud homeplace for a while and is given the opportunity to observe her newly-found family up close and personal. As her heart slowly begins to thaw, Lacey discovers that love might not be such a bad thing after all.

Travis Cordell came roaring into the easy-going life at the Double Cross Heart Ranch itching for a fight of his own. He was there determined to stop his twin brother, Jack, from making the mistake of his life. When he disrupts a McCloud wedding in progress, Travis soon learns how formidable the McCloud clan can be. He decides to stick around awhile, under the guise of making some repairs to Jack's home while he's on his honeymoon, and observes the closeness of this unique family. He befriends the overwhelmed Lacey, and soon the two of them discover they have more in common than busting into a family unannounced. They discover a spark of desire between them that could lead to a more permanent relationship. It's that McCloud magic at work, once again.

For outstanding authenticity in western-influenced, Texas-based romances, one only has to look for the name Peggy Moreland on the cover. Moreland has once again scored a huge hit with her exciting McCloud gals in her newest book, "Hard Lovin' Man." This is the last edition in Moreland's "Texas Brides" series, and I, for one, hate to see it end. Luckily, Peggy has a whole new crew of handsome cowboys and fascinating women coming up in her new series, "Texas Grooms," that should prove to be just as fun to get to know.

5 out of 5 stars Head to Texas before the McCloud Women take all the Hunks!.......2000-01-22

When a Peggy Moreland book comes out, I can't work, clean, sleep or eat. People glare at me as I say "hush, I'm reading." A Moreland book is a romance treasure rich in emotion and laughter.

The McCloud family has been a joy to meet. This is the fifth book in the series, and each is a stand alone story. Think they may have to replace TEX at the State Fair with a statue of the McCloud women. All are strong role models.

Lacey and Tavis's story is full of heart-- hot sex, getting caught and healing past pain.

        Bravo!

An invigorating look at human/alien first contacts, from the perspective of a human abductee. The Demu are exoskeletal aliens with the religious belief that they are the only true beings with souls, and a crusade the mold all other species to look and act as they do. Mr. Busby's exploration of how and why the Demu became what they are is in-depth and appealing, and raises many simularities with terrestrial humans and predudices of all kinds. Mostly, though, just a darn good action and, oddly enough, love story.

Nock not only discusses early Christianity and its converts, but also examines non-Christian religions and philosophy, the means by which they attracted adherents, and the factors influencing and limiting their success. Christianity succeeded, he argues, in part because it acquired and adapted those parts of other philosophies and religions that had a popular appeal.

Overall, this book is what i wanted in terms of hamburger possiblities. There are some recipes that i wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, although they are all well written and i think i could pull them all off if i decided to cook them. Good book on hamburgers and overall a good buy.

I love to BBQ and Grille (there is a big difference). My wife and I have cooked at least 10 of the recipes in this book and they are all fantastic. This book is not like some that give a handful of recipes, there are tons. This is very creative stuff, easy to cook and unbelievably flavorful. If you want to get oohs and aaahs over your cooking for the minimum effort, this is the book. And to think, they're just burgers! This is one of the "Man Trilogy" (as dubbed by me). The other 2 must have in the "man library" are the Weber Big Book of Grilling, and the Complete Meat Cookbook. Grille on!

The collaborative effort of culinary expert Jane Murphy and food writer/recipe tester Liz Yeh Singh, The Great Big Burger Book is packed with one hundred recipes for lip-smacking burgers, ranging from such exotic offers as Shrimp Gumbo Burgers and Japanese Rice Burgers with Chicken Teriyaki, to brussel sprout, apple, and walnut burgers, and more. Recommendations for ingredient sources, along with tips, tricks, and techniques for preparing meat in general, round out this first-rate and highly recommended cookbook for folks of all kitchen skill and experience levels.

This book is yummy. The health-conscious authors offer lots of alternatives for the non-beef eaters among us and their burger toppings are great. The factoids and restaurant mentions that garnish the pages are fun, too. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of the Same Old Burgers? You'll Love This Book!!.......2003-06-15

Although I have eaten my share of burgers, I have always thought of them as boring. You grill them, slap on a slice of cheese, a tomato slice, whatever sauce you like and eat on a soft and often tasteless bun.

Well....along comes The Great Big Burger Book and with it a whole new dimension on just what constitutes a burger. Certainly there are the traditional meat (beef, pork, veal and even lamb) burgers, but my interest was piqued by the chapter entitled: Burgers That Take Flight: Chicken, Turkey and Duck. Using ground poultry allows you to cut the fat content of a burger and the recipes don't cut the taste and flavor. I have always enjoyed Chicken Marsala and when I saw the recipe for Chicken Marsala Burgers, I immediately tried it. Your family and guests, not to mention yourself will really like that one. The photo of a Bolognese Turkey Burger with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Green Olives looks delicious, and I'm happy to report that it also tastes as good as it looks.

But the book doesn't stop there. There is an entire chapter dedicated to burgers made with fish and shell fish. I haven't tried them yet as the weather here in Maine has been just awful this spring, and this type of burger should be cooked outdoors. But there are recipes for lobster and scallop burgers and since I love both, I plan to try them as soon as Mother Nature cooperates.

For vegetarians, there are recipes using portobello mushrooms, falafel, quinoa, tofu, eggplant and chickpeas, to mention a few. That chapter fittingly is entitled: Redefining the Burger.

Admittedly, there are ingredients that may be unfamiliar to the reader. For those people (and I am one), there is a glossary of ingredients and an ingredient source list which tells you where you can find the products that may not be available in your area.

This is a wonderful resource for entertaining. Your guests will be amazed by your culinary expertise when you serve them a healthy burger packed with new flavors. Your backyard menus will never be the same or 'boring' anymore!

This book is perfect as a gift for kids who wish to start out in a/c modelling. It covers the absolute basics, and should get them up and running in no time.

However, the a/c covered in the book are of ancient kits, most of them from the 60's-70's. Technology and standards have improved by loads since then. How one is expected to procure them now is anybody's guess. If the author had taken up some of the recent kits, and showed his stuff, it would have been more useful.

Also, most of the techniques covered in the book are more than available in any of the good modelling sites on the Net now. So I don't see any reason why an intermediate modeler should put his money in this book. Ashey's two books cover most of this stuff and more, and are definitely my rerefences of choice, than this one.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but very basic..........2002-11-13

This is a good book but it is very basic. It tries to use specific models building projects to show techniques. I like the way it starts with a basic snap-together F-117 and goes up to major modification of an existing kit. Unfortunately it doesn't go deep enough into each kit to really show the techniques. On the plus side, the photography is great and mostly in color. I would recommend this if you are just getting started but I think anything beyond that would be disappointed.

This book has several projects. Each one increases in difficulty. If you'r new to this hobby, this is a great book. You learn what tools and techniques are needed to produce good-looking models. An experienced modeler probably knows alot of the info in this books already. Only one, small chapter is dedicated to display so don't expect anything stellar in that area. All in all an interesting book on everyones favorite hobby.

3 out of 5 stars Misnamed slightly - but good book on basic modelling.......2000-04-01

We bought this expecting it to be MAINLY about techniques and ideas for display. Instead, there is actually more building advice than displaying advice. It's a good book for beginners, and has some great pics - we love the Blue Angels hanging display - but it is NOT even 1/4 about display, in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Step by step guide to building great models.......1999-12-16

The book is organized in chapters where one begins by assembling a snap-together type of model aircraft. From there it goes on to building an out-of-the box standard kit, then adding special features like resin parts, metal etched parts. Really useful tips and tricks are given throughout the book which can be read in one afternoon - large typeface, nice b&w pictures, some color pictures.

A beginner will benefit from this book a lot more than an expert. Since I'm a beginner, it was well worth it !

The Poster Collection of the Zurich Museum fur Gestaltung offers a record of the history of the poster, in Switzerland and world-wide, from its beginnings in the 19th century to its current existence in the present. The collection is continually being expanding and brought up-to-date, and maintains a continuous dialogue with contemporary output while acknowledging historical achievements. The Museum's Poster Collection is one of the most comprehensive and significant archives of its kind in the world. A kaleidoscope of the graphic styles of the past twenty years, this collection of posters commissioned by the Zurich Museum fur Gestaltung includes works by such icons as El Lissitzky, Max Bill, and Josef Muller-Brockmann, as well as by young unknowns. The seamlessness of the survey is underscored by the many arresting earlier styles that find themselves still at play in the posters being produced today. The Museum's exhibition signage proves itself to be of the exceptional and experimental quality that one would expect of a commissioning agent engaged itself in the appreciation of good poster design.

The book itself is bad. The words written in it are more than wrong, and the author never denies that HE knows nothing about her. But what made me even more angry was the reveiw by "Righteous babe" (December 2004), located on this page. She too gets the lyrics and story wrong. Anyone who owns a cd and calls themselves a fan should know the lyrics. Especially if your badmouthing someone else for not doing their research. Her quoted lyrics are from "Shameless". Anyone who has "Dilate" can go and read the correct lyrics for themselves to see that she actually sings "I gotta cover my butt, cuz I covet another mans wife." So her whole review is just as useless as the book. I guess "righteous babe" isn't so right. Back to the book though, I am glad I bought it at a used book store. It is not a window into Ani's life. I think her music is the story of her life, and will not ever be found in the pages of a book.

This book was so horribly written. I read it when it first came out so now isn't a good time for me to write a review (years later) but I just found this place to write reviews. This guy has a lot of facts wrong - first of all he says that Ani married her drummer, Andy Stochanski, when she really married her sound engineer, Andrew Gilchrist! Geeze, how could you get that wrong, yeah I know, Andy and Andrew may be similar, but if you know anything about her you'd get at least that fact straight! And some of the interpretations of songs were wrong too. Not that I'm an expert on knowing what Ani was thinking, but I've seen a direct quote from her saying that in her quote "Better cover my mouth cuz I coveted another man's wife", she isn't saying that she slept with the man's wife! Contrary to popular belief she's saying that she betrayed the wife (coveted her) by sleeping with her husband. This was actually stated by Ani that that's what she meant - and it was Andrew Gilchrist who she slept with (he was married when she met him). Anyway, it's poorly written. I see that he's written at least one or two more books about her now, I can hardly believe it! I wouldn't waste my money.

1 out of 5 stars the man needs to get his facts straight.......2002-10-08

the author threw a bunch of hear say and rumors into book format and sold it. a lot of the so called "facts" are blatant fallacies. buy a record, go to her concerts, you'll learn more about her.

1 out of 5 stars An attempt, but hardly a good one.......2001-08-17

I was very disappointed when I read this book. Yes, I understand that the author did not intend this piece to be an official window into Ani's life... He states that he spent 3 months listening to ani's recordings, in an attempt to completely deconstruct them to get inside her head... I have spent nearly 7 years (I am, afterall, only 17) listening to Ani's music. And for one person to try to tell me just what Ani is "all about," is so infuriating. Ani's music touches each one of us differently, in my opinion, as we find our own experiences mirrored through her work, whether or not that's what she intended... I must... point out there are so many inaccuracies that this book should be kept farther away from the beginners than from anyone else. And more importantly, the only true way (in my opinion) to experience Ani is through her words, thoughts, and emotions.

3 out of 5 stars she still doesnt have what she deserves.......2001-06-29

ani's amazing. i think this book could have potentially been ani-worthy, but there were a few holes which probably could have been filled, and who could do that better than ani herself? im a huge ani fan and am still waiting for a book which really enhances her accomplishments. however, i do recommend reading it merely because anything published about this amazing woman is worth reading.

Life of the fiercely independent and courageous singer-songwriter. Ani DiFranco's career as a singer-songwriter, recording artist, and independent recording label 'executive' for Righteous Babe Records has given new inspiration to the world of alternative music. Since the release of her first album in 1990, she has developed one of the most loyal followings in contemporary music among young feminists, college students, and folk rock fans. With the release of her celebrated solo album, Educated Guess, she has embarked on a one-woman, two-year North American concert tour , the Rolling Thunder Pussy Revue. ""I always wanted to be the commander-in-chief of my own one woman army."" says Ani DiFranco.
