Book Description
This is a novel of many pleasures: a passionate and tender interracial love story that is also an fascinating scholarly detective tale. A young Oxford don named Michael Foxwist and a group of his academic friends come upon a collection of dusty old documents; they are intrigued to learn of the clandestine seventeenth-century marriage of the black prince, Pelagius, and Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia. With mounting excitement, they discover that the true queen of England may not be the familiarly dowdy elderly woman of German extraction but a young and gifted black scientist of independent mind. She lives in Barbados and is the last living descendant of Elizabeth and Pelagius. Michael confronts her with her heritage only to find that she refuses to be the child of destiny and insists on being herself. But their meeting changes everything -- they fall in love. Of different race, nationality, and temperament, they must reexamine all their assumptions and the terms on which they live. Though written to be read independently, The Empress of the Last Days is also the triumphant conclusion to Jane Stevenson's acclaimed historical trilogy, companion to The Winter Queen and The Shadow King. Often compared to such writers as Penelope Fitzgerald and A. S. Byatt, Stevenson once again gives us a splendid work of rich imagination, lively erudition, warm humanity, and wit.

DaVinci code without the sinister elements.......2005-11-17
This book is a novel of ideas, but also reads like an academic mystery novel, somewhat akin to the "DaVinci Code" without the sinister elements. Reading it was a unique experience for me, because I had read Stevenson's first novel, "The Winter Queen"; this definitely lends an extra dimension. The academics unravel some of the story of that first novel, speculate about the rest, and also learn about the ultimate fate of its primary character and his descendants. While a novel of ideas, the main character, Michael Foxwist, is competently developed, and the writing is good. Perhaps because I am not British, I found the ending somewhat disappointing: the different views occasioned by the discovery of the "true" heir to the British throne just were not that interesting, the scene in which Michael and Natty view the painting was not very moving, and the whole novel becomes kind of pedestrian at the end, as Michael and his fiancee are destined to find career bliss. Still, "The Empress of the Last Days" is an intriguing, and informative, work. It is informative about academic politics in two different European cultures, resources for historical research, and Barbadian culture and tourism, among other things.
i like a warning about certain things, myself........2005-07-11
Those who enjoy reading certain things should be free to do so , of course, but it would be nice if the rest of us had some idea before we spent money and wasted time. I don't know how the rest of the book turns out, but some potential readers might like to know that this 'literary' sounding book, once you get past the first few pages, has graphic refences to hermaphrodites, lesbians and things of that nature, using some truly filthy language. If that's your taste, as I said, well fine, but I won't be finishing it and I am sure that there are others out there who would like to know this BEFORE they buy it.
Historical trilogy ends in modern academia.......2005-02-01
While each of the books in Stevenson's trilogy can be read on its own, this last offers a richer experience if read in the context of the other two. The first volume, "The Winter Queen," set in the 1600s, chronicles the relationship between the former Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia and Pelagius, an African prince kidnapped and sold into slavery, but free at the time he meets Elizabeth. They married secretly and had a son, Balthasar, whose life is the subject of the second book, "The Shadow King."
"The Empress of the Last Days" takes place in 2002. It involves a circle of European academics who come upon a trove of 17th century papers in Holland, including a theological journal by Pelagius and his catalog of West Indies plants and their uses. The rest of the papers include a never-before-seen play by the English writer Aphra Behn, and a miscellany of papers from a printer, Petrus Behn, who seemed to specialize in political satire and pornography for an English clientele.
Corinne Hoyers, the Dutch Ph.D student who first reviews the papers, has no idea how these items came to be jumbled together, but readers of "The Shadow King" will know that Aphra Behn, wife of Petrus, stole Pelagius' books from Balthasar. Corinne turns over the Aphra Behn material to a young Oxford don, Michael Foxwist, who subsequently discovers Pelagius' marriage certificate and Balthasar's baptismal record hidden in the binding of one of Pelagius' books.
Being English, he instantly sees the significance of this - Elizabeth Stuart's legitimate male heir should have inherited the throne of England - and the succession should never have been diverted to the Windsors, current holders of that chair. As Britain rather half-heartedly gears up to celebrate the present Elizabeth's Jubilee amidst the latest wave of scandals and tawdry gossip, Michael discovers a more legitimate heir - a young black female scientist in Barbados.
Michael does not, incidentally, share any of this - from the discovery of the documents to his meeting with Melita Palaeologue, the rightful heir - with his Dutch colleagues on the project. When he does finally get around to telling them of his discovery, they are not in the least perturbed, which strikes one of the book's few wrong notes. Stevenson may be trying to make the point that the British royal dynasty is of interest only to Britons, but our own tabloids can attest the to the speciousness of that claim.
Besides, Stevenson has been at pains to point out that academics are a cutthroat lot, in fierce competition for prestige, jobs, money and important finds. Documents challenging the succession of the major reigning European monarchs are good for all of the above. And a man who would keep such a secret from his colleagues would sound alarm bells of mistrust to an already paranoid confraternity.
Melita, a plant biologist, also remains unimpressed with her claim to royalty. From her point of view, "this whole idea's almost like an insult. In terms of genetics you can't say one bloodline's important and none of the others count." Though Michael agrees when she points out that 90 percent of her ancestors are African, he can't help but point out that Pelagius was an African prince and on the Palaeologue side - 17 generations back - she's a descendant of the last Emperor of Byzantium.
A subplot - the obsession of Michael's dotty uncle - makes Melita the "Empress of the Last Days," a prophesied messiah-like regent, too confusing to recount here, but showcasing the mystical, almost fairy-tale trappings people confer on descent - ignoring the thousands of superfluous or undesirable ancestors.
Melita and Michael fall in love. Stevenson handles this with passionate delicacy; they are cautious people of different backgrounds, interests, attitudes, and ambitions. But Michael is going back to England and they don't have a lot of time. And Melita must decide whether her right to the throne is the moral imperative Michael thinks it is.
Like the previous two novels, this one is deliberately paced. Stevenson is not shy about diverting the unfolding plot with a discussion of Oxford's duty to tradition and the modern student, or the relevance of royalty to history and society's present concerns, or various issues of race, privilege, tradition and academia.
A page-turner in its leisurely way, this is a fine conclusion to an absorbing, very different trilogy of ideas, romance and history.
Slow Start, Good Read.......2004-12-16
The first five pages of this book were an incomprehensible mishmash of garbled descriptions and pointless descriptions of some lame Christmas celebration. It went from that dreadful start into a very densely written & interesting book following the search by several historical academicians to track down the trail of Elizabeth of Bohemia, her shadow husband, and their son. One researcher tracks the family to Barbados and finds the "heiress" to the throne. Some of the discussions pertaining to modern beliefs and cultural stereotypes are hard to follow, but interesting. After a slow start, the novel picks up the pace and the reader becomes interested in next round of research and what it will reveal. Interesting overall. I might think differently if I had read the first two books in the trilogy before reading this one.
The once and future Queen.......2004-10-30
For her third novel of the historical trilogy (The Winter Queen, The Shadow King), about the clandestine 17th century marriage of Elizabeth of Bohemia and Pelagius Van Overmeer, a black slave of royal African lineage, the author attempts a different construct. Rather than follow the theme of her first two novels, the setting for The Empress of Last Days is the modern world of education, where researchers combine resources to uncover the true story of the secret royal marriage and its direct connection to the throne of the British monarchy.
Tracking obscure religious and botanical tracts, as well as a play, the road leads to a mysterious young scientist in Barbados, Melpomene Paleologue. While Michael Foxwist, an Oxford don, is editing a play that suggests the original union of royalty to slave, a Dutch graduate, Corinne, works through the internet, acutely aware of the impact of the marriage on current affairs of state in England. A dedicated student of the web, Corinne will be organizing the information for dissemination to the public, with the concurrent need for academic integrity. It is Corinne who will be responsible for the quality of the search engine, site map, index and links to other sites, a huge undertaking, possibly the making of her career.
Yet it is Foxwist who steps into the future, traveling to Barbados to pursue the last known person of Pelagius' genealogy. When Michael meets the young woman who could be Queen of England, he finds more than an interesting lineage; Michael falls in love. Yet he is not oblivious to the task ahead, including the blooming relationship with a young woman who has her own plans for the future.
In her cleverly crafted final part of the trilogy, Stevenson approaches history with an engaging mix of personalities and possibilities. The novel is a study in the intricacies of academia, literature viewed in the context of real life, adding another dimension to the work. Clearly, Stevenson is comfortable in an educational milieu, her characters struggling for professional survival and personal fulfillment. At times mired in the jargon of academia, this is a multi-layered, densely-plotted novel. Not suited to all literary tastes, this book will definitely appeal to those who appreciate the import of the past on the present in an intellectual world where feelings still demand to be acknowledged. Luan Gaines/2004.

Windigo Twilight or Darkness?.......2006-01-11
Having read some of this author's other books, I was disappointed when I read this one. First, the author seemed to want us to follow the beliefs of the American Indians. I have known many American Indians and Christian missionaries to the Indians all of my life. I know that they would have been disturbed about the spirituality of this book. It is one thing to enlighten the reader; it is another to accept those beliefs into Christ's message. Secondly, the plot and actions in this book seemed to be contrived and plodding. The story went on and on and - o-n.
When It Comes to Suspense Colleen is a Master.......2005-08-23
I've read most of Colleen Cobles (Rhoads) books and have loved every one of them. Windigo Twilight is no exception. Colleen brings the reader right up to the shores of Lake Superior and into the lives of this rather eclectic group of people, all seeming to have a reason to commit murder. And the reader is kept guessing along with Becca, the heroine, right up until the end. I also loved how Colleen dropped in a little snippet about Bree Nichols, the heroine in her Rock Harbor series. I can't wait for more LI suspense to come out by Colleen.
Wonderful Romantic-Suspense!.......2005-07-23
I just finished Colleen's new SH release, Windigo Twilight and wanted to recommend it to anyone who loves romantic suspense with a mystery to solve! One crime.....so many suspects....and the heroine must figure out who murdered her parents--BEFORE they can get to her! Excellent read! Check it out! It's the first in Colleen's Great Lakes Legends series...put out by SH...under the name Colleen Rhoads. It's a must-read! For more of my book reviews, visit (...)

A Big Disappointment.......2007-09-19
From the description or title of this, it looks like an anthology of books in a new style, when in fact it is a freebie from Steeple Hill to people on their mailing list giving just a short excerpt of what the stories are about. It isn't worth the time or money to order it, as it only has 92 pages & touches on the stories of FIVE different books.

mixed bag.......2007-01-12
Some of Spider's earlier stuff, including the landmark Stardance (writtten with Jeanne). Not every story in this collection is worth raves, but every story is worth reading. A couple, like the title piece and Not Fade Away are pure Spider--twisty, and just when you think you've got it, he does a little shuffle and leads you away from wherever you thought you were going. Like someone once said: "Don't miss it if you can."
The Joy, The Rapture,.......2002-09-25
I have always enjoyed Spider Robinson's work, ever since a friend introduced me to his short story "Meloncholy Elephants" years ago. And now that story, and others, are reprinted in this spectacular hardbound edition.
Personl favorites include the title story (and the slight twist at the ending), Rubber Soul (a lyrical delight), Meloncholy Elephants (still a favorite), and Orphans of Eden, which is not quite as the publishers review puts it, wherein a character based on Spider is played. It's Spider, darn it.
You can find these stories in other places if you look, but it's nice to have them in hardcover, and this IS a fine edition. The cover is slick, and the same under the dustjacket.

Very informative book. I'm making my way through the entire 101 series from John.
Leadership 101 by John C Maxwell.......2007-05-29
Leadership could a very vague concept. The book explains leadership in a way that provides a clear understanding of the concept of leadership and allows readers to take steps to improve the leadership skills. I have read the book 6+ times and have given out 7 copies to people in my workplace. It is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to be a leader.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO BOOKS!!.......2007-05-25
IN THE PAST 3 YEARS ONLY TWO BOOKS ABOUT LEADERSHIP HAVE BEEN GOOD:
1. Leadership: Past, Present & Future by Carlos M. Rivera
2. Leadership 101: What Every Leader Needs to Know
You will agree with me 100%
A great Asset If You Want To Enhance Your Leadership Skills.......2007-04-01
Leadership 101 is a popular book, particularly in college presentations on leadership. I personally bought this book after a student gave a splendid presentation on the valuable contents of this book.
Setting priorities, casting a vision, and realizing the power of influence are only a few of the crucial topics Maxwell addresses in this "little-big" book.
Encouraged by several of Maxwell's books, as well as many others, I went ahead and studied leadership for several years, conducted over 100 interviews, and finally published "The Awakened Leader: One Simple Leadership Style That Works Every Time, Everywhere."
Readers who liked John Maxwell's works, and who want to remain informed of appropriate leadership in a time where globalization has become a part of our everyday life and has ignited increasing interdependency, multiplicity of mindsets and approaches, and multi-faceted workplaces, should take a look at this book.
"The Awakened Leader" presents a meta-leadership approach, which will guide you toward implementing the appropriate leadership style once you've assessed the situation, the followers, and the environment at hand. It is based on flexibility through open-mindedness, or wakefulness. And it completes the perspectives that Maxwell and other great leadership authors have presented us in the past decade: successful leadership of the self and others, based on proven trends of the past, the now, and the future.
Great Book.......2007-03-28
I was first introduced to this work at a training program three years ago. Since then, I have given it to every one of my developing leaders in their training programs.

In Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant, 18 of the Moosewood Collective's chefs each contribute a chapter of vegetarian recipes from a different regional cuisine. Recipes are straightforward, and sources (and substitutes!) are given for hard-to-find ingredients. In addition to the Asian cuisine one might expect to find in an international vegetarian cookbook, there are some surprising and tasty options from Eastern Europe, Armenia, and the Middle East, as well as both Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jewish recipes. The suggested menus encourage mixing; tomorrow's dinner could include Sopa de Ajo (garlic soup) from Chile, Spinach Nori Rolls from Japan, and Mango with Yogurt from India. The main dishes are so hearty that your guests may not notice they're meatless.

My favorite.......2006-09-04
This cookbook is INCREDIBLE! I got it for my birthday 10 years ago and have tried at least half of the recipes in it -- and my copy is battered enough to prove it. I especially recommend the Tapenade, Turkish Spinach & Lentil Soup, Sayra's Greens, Pasta e Fagioli, Pepperpot Soup, Mocha Pecan Pie, Galletas de Nueces, Polvorones de Canela, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Pulla, Ukrainian Almond Crescents (OK, so I have a sweet tooth). The best gift I've ever gotten!!
Fantastic Cookbook for Beginning Cooks .......2006-05-21
I purchased this cookbook about 15 years ago - - a little while before I moved out on my own. I purchased "The Joy of Cooking" and "The Silver Palate" at the same time. This is an excellent cookbook.
-Every single recipe turns out well and as it should. A rarity in any cookbook.
-It is well laid-out. One recipe per page, ingredients separate from method, limited cross referencing required, easy measurements.
-simple techniques.
-informs you ahead what can be made in advance.
-excellent index; a necessity in a cookbook so often overlooked.
I now own about 40 cookbooks or so, am married with children and have entertained many guests. This book taught me how to cook gently and easily. I highly recommend it to anyone just starting out whether they are vegetarian or not. I still use it and (although you may not believe me) some of the recipes are much, much better than those in fancier cookbooks for the same items. And easier too. Oh and did I mention? Everything made from it tastes good.
Really great book!.......2006-02-20
I've used this book so many times that the binding is cracked. There are post-it notes sticking up from too many pages to count. And the book automatically opens to my favorite recipe, Pasta e Fagioli. It is my idea of the ultimate comfort food, and I cannot count how many times we've enjoyed it.
This book is a classic. Really good food that is also really good for you.
a brief education of ethnic cooking.......2005-04-28
Sundays at Moosewood is divided into chapters, each dedicated to a culinary taste. Its a bit overwhelming to read it straight through and then select a few recipes to make into a meal - however, they help you with a section in the back that mixes and matches recipes from different chapters. I think that is one of the book's best features.
I'm not a vegetarian, but a lot of my dinner guests are - and Moosewood guarantees a truly interesting dining experience without the addition of meat. Like other reviewers, I sometimes grill fish, chicken or steak to serve with the veggie-centered recipes.
Vegetarian (and fish) dishes from around the world.......2005-03-15
I've had this book for more than 10 years and still return to it periodically when looking for something unusual, yet easy to prepare.
The book is organized into 18 ethnic regions, less a comprehensive collection of world recipes, more like an eclectic, culinary passport to some areas perhaps less familiar to American cooks: Africa South of the Sahara, Caribbean, Finland, Armenia and Eastern Europe. Each chapter features an essay on the region by the contributing writer, followed by a sampling of the region's cuisine, from appetizers and salads to desserts and after-dinner drinks.
The recipes are as varied as the cuisines, though all are fairly straightforward, emphasizing fresh, easily accessible ingredients. Some recipes can be prepared in under 30 minutes, while others can be an hours-long labor of love (assuming one finds meal preparation theraputic, as I do.) I've found the chapter on North Africa to be a favorite; I can't count how many times I've prepared Fatima's Salad, an intoxicating blend of potatoes, carrots, beets, peppers, vinegar and olive oil, each time with raves from my guests. And Mahshi Filfil, a dish of rice-stuffed bell peppers with a creamy feta cheese sauce, has convinced my finicky Armenian family that there's more than one way to stuff a vegetable.
As to the recipes' authenticity, most are modified creations of ethnic dishes, in many cases substituting vegetables or soy products for meat or for hard-to-find ingredients. It is not a book for the cook interested in authentic ethnic cooking; a more accurate description is a collection of Americanized recipes that pay their respects to world cuisines.
An eclectic book, it has a little something for everyone; it specializes in nothing, celebrates everything and encourages the cook to gently step beyond the boundaries of one's own culinary traditions, into exotic cuisines from around the globe.
Customer Reviews:
A cookbook to read!.......2000-06-13
Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant is delicious, providing not only a mix of ethnic recipes to spice up your life, but previews of the various cultures presented and of the individual recipes. The cookbook's in-depth descriptions of how and when to eat the different foods more than compensates for the lack of pictures. For vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, this cookbook is a delight to read.

If you're a woman over 40, you are undergoing physical and emotional changes, declining metabolism, fat deposits at your waistline, decreased energy, mood swings, food cravings--do we need to continue this list? Now pile on chronic, long-term stress (which the author terms toxic stress), which hits women between 40 and 60 and leads to self-destructive eating behavior. "Uncontrolled or toxic stress keeps the refueling appetite on, thus inducing stress eating and weight gain," Peeke explains. The stress triggers are constant, so the body never gets to turn off the stress response. The weight gained from this chronic, toxic stress--toxic weight--settles inside the abdomen and is associated with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Peeke explains the association between stress and fat gain, and describes the stress/eating cycle ("the itch you can't scratch"). Then she teaches tools for "regrouping": formulating and following a contingency plan of nutrition, exercise, and self-care. Next are suggestions for a nutritional plan tied to stressful times of the day and an explanation of food needs after age 40. In the final chapters, Peeke nudges us to exercise to relieve stress, reduce body fat, and benefit overall health. Peeke is a highly regarded scientist and clinician who studies the link between stress and fat at the National Institutes of Health. She's also Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and works with Vice President Gore as the Medical Director of the National Race for the Cure for Breast Cancer. --Joan Price
Book Description
It's a fact: stress makes you fat. Renowned clinician and scientist Dr. Pamela Peeke goes beyond diet and exercise with a lifestyle program that shows women how to stop being diet "POWs" ("Prisoners Of Weight") or victims of "Toxic Stress" and how to evolve into physically and mentally stress-resilient individuals. Peeke helps women identify their stress-eating profiles (Are you a stress-overeater? A stress-undereater?) and explains that to remove weight, you have to lift weight. She explains what to eat and, equally as important, when to eat by navigating the afternoon "CortiZone," the hours of highest vulnerability to stress eating. Learn how to put it all together through the fine art of regrouping.
Women can tailor this accessible program to their individual needs using Peeke's three behavior templates:
Stress-resilient nutrition
Stress-resilient physical activity
Stress-resilient regrouping
Dr. Peeke's program is a must for women who want to break the stress-fat cycle that has thickened their after-forty waistlines.

Fight Fat After Forty.......2007-08-24
This book is amazing! It is exactly the solution I needed! It explains, in detail, what is happening to my forty something body. My body has been changing for years now, and the weight has piled on and the old solutions just don't do it anymore. This book has helped me to understand that this has been going on for awhile and unless I change the way I treat my body, it will not get any better. It's not about DIET, but about what you eat and when you eat it. It's about recognizing when stress hits and navigating through it in a non-destructive manor. I now have hope and can't wait to begin this new journey. I realize that without my health and well being, I have nothing. Thanks!
Fight Fat Over Forty Explained and Helped a Lot.......2007-04-23
I'm a Stress Overeater over 50 and this book explains a lot. It also explains why it is necessary, not overindulgent, to continue with my twice per week personal trainer for upper body and core workouts (which I rarely would do on my own) and my twice per week long hikes. I have made other changes which have helped me slowly but surely "remove" the excess weight. If I don't do something perfectly, I don't stress over it, which helps in the long run. For some reason, this book made sense to me and convinced me of what habits I need to stop, continue, and do more of.
I also can spot stress undereaters, and I am now more compassionate than envious (the ones I know are thin and look good, but I know they are also stressed.)
Fighting Fat After Forty is validating!.......2006-07-28
I haven't even finished this book and I've lost 10 pounds. This is the first weight loss in 5 years for me and all I did was change the times I eat! Pamela Peeke is the first doctor to truly understand and work with how a woman's body changes during perimenopause and menopause and it really validates you as a person. You aren't nuts; you really are changing. I can't believe how motivated I am. This is a definite buy and a book that I will save and give to my own daughter.
Be Prepared to Fight Back!.......2006-05-04
I first heard about Dr. Peeke on Discovery Channel's Body Challenge. I read this book cover to cover and it hit me; this is why I've had trouble losing weight! It helped me to understand how stress-eating was affecting my inability to lose weight; or to keep it off. I highly recommend this book and I'm not kidding about how much help it's been to me. The proof is in the 24 lbs lost and 4% fat loss in 10 weeks! What do you have to lose???

The book was great information and it seems to be working.
Book Description
An upbeat and encouraging guide for shy teens and preteens
Fifty percent of Americans consider themselves shy, but teens and preteens wrestling with the problem may believe they're "the only one." Filled with knowing insights and funny drawings, this lively book helps teens experiencing "panic on the inside" and "catastrophe on the outside" to understand such things as the mechanics of their situation and the fact that they're not the first person to own a "mental VCR" that replays embarrassing moments. It also lets shy kids know how common their problem is, and gives them tips for overcoming it. AUTHOR BIO: Melissa Daly is a former senior staff writer at Seventeen magazine, where she wrote articles and columns on health, sexuality, relationships, and other topics.

Customer Reviews:
For fashion students.......2005-10-05
It's my understanding that this book is for students who are making their own patterns from SCRATCH. This way they start out with a perfect size eight sloper to make other patterns from.
Major Disappointment.......2004-12-03
This text is for beginners only, with only the most rudimentary fitting information. It is packaged along with several pellon fabric basic slopers for fitting purposes.
