Robert Hellenga's superb debut, The Sixteen Pleasures, took the reader to 1960s Florence--a place of floods, fine art, and erotic discovery. His new novel, The Fall of a Sparrow, also opens in Italy, now transformed by the onslaught of terrorism. By 1980, this state of emergency even reaches the U.S., destroying one Midwestern family. Seven years later, Alan "Woody" Woodhull, popular classics teacher at a small Midwestern college, has yet to recover from the loss of his daughter Cookie in a Bologna train station bombing. Under financial pressure from his estranged wife (who's about to enter a convent) and in increasing professional peril (thanks to a high level of self-destructive behavior), he decamps for Italy, intent on bearing witness at the trial of his daughter's killers. The proceedings don't come off as Woody had planned. He does, however, encounter a series of richly drawn Italians--including the father of one terrorist--who are quick to share the benefits of their classical, sensual culture. (Caveat lector, this is a big, big book, and any attempt at synopsis conceals rather than discloses its ample treasures.)
The Fall of a Sparrow is a study in narrative, cultural, and psychological chaos. Woody does his level best to make meaning out of senselessness--in particular, the death of his daughter, but also the subsequent breakup of his family: "Cookie's death was like a cable, binding us to the past," he thinks. "Sometimes we'd think we'd slipped the cable and were running free, but then we'd be brought up short, like a dog that forgets it's on a chain." Again and again, he strives to break free, through literature, music (the blues), sex, and the strength of love. But what he has to learn, and what the book ultimately imparts, is that the past is not to be forgotten or surmounted but absorbed. In addition to his subtle psychological portraits of Woody and his remaining daughters, Hellenga also excels when it comes to the large scale. With his widescreen vision, he creates memorable, almost inhabitable slices of Italian--and American--life.
Book Description
Robert Hellenga, bestselling author of The Sixteen Pleasures, once again reveals his profound understanding of the strength and resilience of the human spirit in a compelling and masterful novel.
Alan Woodhull ("Woody"), a classics professor at a small Midwestern college, finds himself convinced that life has taught him all the lessons he has to learn: After the tragic death of his beloved oldest daughter during a terrorist bombing in Italy seven years ago, his wife has left him and his two remaining daughters have grown up and moved away. Yet his decision to attend the trial of the terrorists and to return to the scene of the tragedy marks the beginning of a new life and the awakening of a new love.
Customer Reviews:
Seems Very Real to Life.......2005-06-27
I was amazed at how the reviews are all over the map. Admittedly, I did like 16 Pleasures better, but this book has a lot to offer. Woody is a complex character; not a heroic type, but real, faulty - one can imagine that the repercussions of losing a daughter/sister could honestly play out as they did for the Woodhull family. All sorts of mixed emotions and motives are seen within the pages. I am truly astounded that this book was written before 9/11; before a time when the country and especially everyone who personally suffered from the bombings of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon and the plane crash in PA could really begin to grasp the effects that terrorism can have upon life and for those left behind. Hellenga grasps these effects, doesn't sugarcoat it, struggles with it, shows how life goes on limping as best one can and finding the beauty in the moment - especially when viewed from a helcopter and looking over a field of rugs.
A truly modern man.......2004-12-11
Hellenga treats us to a view of a man we would like to be. He is a truly lusty renaissance character who behaves in poignant and believable ways in the midst of a fantastic story.
too real.......2004-08-25
Although I've never met anyone like the main character he remains so real and believable. The novel is beautifully written and the character development is perfect. Frail, depressed and lost he slowly, through many missteps, eventually finds a bit of truth about life for himself that helps him rebuild. I loved this book!
Not for fans of "Sixteen Pleasures," but good nonetheless.......2004-04-01
Fans of Hellenga's earlier "The Sixteen Pleasures" will likely not like this book. That just seems to be a fact. In "Pleasures" we get a sympathetic female character who's on a path of discovery about herself, her sexuality, and the world. It's a book with a broad base of appeal among book lovers. "Sparrow" is just a different kind of animal.
Hellenga seems to have a way of misdirecting his readers. In "Pleasures" one gets the idea that the whole point is a controversial rediscovered text when in fact its just a set piece.
The same is true of "Sparrow." The jacket talks about Woody's daughter dying in a terrorist attack in Italy. This certainly makes for an interesting story. Or rather, it would have. Instead, Hellenga takes us on another path as the main character, this time an older man, takes his own path of discovery. It's likely that some don't want to take the ride, especially fans "Pleasures."
Yes, this book has sex. But then, so does "Pleasures." Maybe folks are just more comfortable reading about a younger woman's maturing sexuality than they are with an older man who lusts for young and older women alike. Frankly, both books are honest and both are good (I admit "Pleasures" is by far the better read). At the risk of offending certain readers, I think the problem is more with one's views on sex and not necessarily a failing of Hellenga.
In one scene Hellenga describes a situation in which he realizes that he's hurt a female colleague his own age who's emotionally distant. Woody recognizes the lost opportunity and shows empathy, at least internally, towards the woman. In other words, this isn't just some guy out to have sex with a student. He's complicated and he has feelings.
Hellenga is a versatile author. Unfortunately, he attracts certain readers by his apparent misdirection. While he might be guilty of false advertising, he's certainly not guilty of being a bad writer. If you're open to the experience, give "Sparrow" a chance. Just be forewarned - it's not "The Sixteen Pleasures."
A great read.......2003-11-08
What a wonderful book. I wanted to spend more time with all of these characters, I wanted to spend more time in their world. They deal with pain and tragedy and confusion so much more thoughtfully and interestingly than I do. I learned something from them all, like you would learn from a friend's misfortune that they were able to face gracefully. This book is as nourishing as an Italian banquet with friends outside under the trees on a balmy summer evening. I'm on to read more by Robert Hellenga. Why isn't he a household name?
Book Description
WHO WAS THE BRIDE TO BE?
Sister Maggy MacFergus was tall, and she discovered that most men found this off-putting. When Dr. Paul Doelsma offered Maggy a nursing job in Holland, she took it. There was something special about Dr. Doelsma, and it wasn't just that he was taller than her. She was sensible enough to realize that he would never love her back -- after all, Paul had said he'd already chosen himself a wonderful wife. But who was the lucky girl?
Customer Reviews:
Strong heroine.......2004-04-24
Maggy MacFergus is a highly competent nurse who meets Dr. Paul Doelsma while she is nursing his mother in the hospital. After Maggy saves his mother's life during a heart attack, Dr. Doelsma is grateful, and invites Maggy to Holland to continue to nurse his mother there. Maggy accepts. She also is attracted to Paul. In addition to appreciating her professional capabilities, he is also one of the few men around who is taller than she is, (Maggy is six feet tall). But will Paul return her affection?
I liked this early Betty Neels book. Maggy is a strong heroine, who doesn't take any nonsense. She may (mistakenly) believe that she is unattractive to men because of her size, but she is never self-pitying about it, simply going on with her life and becoming the best professional --and person-- she can be. This leads into the greatest reward she can imagine. And of course, Betty Neels' colorful description of Holland is always a winning background. I would highly recommend this story.

Hawkman: hidden gem of the DC Universe.......2006-01-26
Combines the first 6 issues of the current volume, and part of the Secret Files #1. Written by Geoff Johns, and drawn by Rags Morales. I knew next to nothing about the character and his complex history, but had high hopes in the creative team. Hawkman is now a favorite character of mine! He's conservative, and he's not afraid to swing a big hammer at bad guys -- what's not to love about that?
Here's the skinny on Hawk... he has been reincarnated several times throughout history, along with Hawkgirl. They both have a love for history (and usually each other). They both have unique powers (including flight) that come from the planet Thanagar. Until this most recent reincarnation, they have retained the memories of previous lives, but this time HG doesn't remember ever being in love with HM. Green Arrow (DC's idealist liberal) has a 2-issue crossover, and it's brilliant. This is an outstanding "Indiana Jones meets Stargate" type comic. HIGHLY recommended.
First 6 Issues Of One Of The Best Ongoings In Comics.......2004-10-02
I'd like to preface this review by saying that I have this material, but not in this format; I have the original comic books reprinted in this Trade Paperback, and the Secret Files book, part of which is reprinted herein. I highly urge anyone who buys this to get the full "Hawkman Secret Files # 1" comic as well; I find the DC Secret Files books to be indispensable in getting the full impact of the series they cover (besides which, they're tremendous reads on their own merits). In Hawkman's case, the full Secret Files is even more necessary than usual, due to the characters's admittedly convoluted histories. However, everything you need to know is condensed into the files for the main characters, which is not to say you may not want to go back and read the previous stories anyway.
On to the main focus: the first six issues of the current (and brilliant) ongoing "Hawkman" series are here, all of them rating a perfect 10/10 except for # 4, whose sole flaw was that it should have been longer; it's as if the creative team had to cram 2 comics worth into a single issue, although it remains stronger than it should have been if that were indeed the case. The 2-issue Green Arrow arc (nos. 5 & 6) is one of the very best 2-issue arcs I've read in over two decades of reading comic books.
Some random thoughts: Hawkman himself, while never straying from being a noble defender of the innocent and persecuted, is truly the most savage hero the DC Universe has ever seen. The creative team, led by co-writers Geoff Johns & James Robinson and penciller Rags Morales, are so good they can make even a character like the Gentleman Ghost seem not only intriguing but downright intimidating; meanwhile the new incarnation of Copperhead could carry a whole horror movie (or franchise) on his own. Ace colorist John Kalisz is turning in the work of his career here. The use of locales lesser seen in the DC Universe (Louisiana; India; etc.) pays off in spades. Series develops a great supporting cast right from the get-go - that's a must, no series Ever succeeds on title character alone. And of course, the strange relationship between Hawkman and Hawkgirl....
Highest possible recommendation.
Superhero Romance Done Right!.......2003-10-10
Superheroes are, ultimately, romantic fantasies of heroism. Here, we have a character with old-world chivalric values living in today's world. And in this book, we see superhero romance done right.
Geoff Johns writes with passion. He obviously loves these characters. Rags Morales is one of the best artists in comics today. And together they have delivered a superhero story with heart - as in a "broken" one. Hawkman returns from oblivion in the "Return of Hawkman" JSA storyline only to find that the Hawkgirl of this incarnation doesn't even recognize him. She "knows" that he is her husband from all previous incarnations but she just doesn't "feel" that he is. That kind of corny stuff. But done right. With just the right amount of irony and heart-wrenching dialogue - "Partners. That's all we will be. Try to go further than that and I'll fly away so far away that you'll never find me. EVER.", Hawkgirl warns Hawkman.
The second part of the book features a meeting between Green Arrow and Hawkman. These two are the successful revamps of the recent years. And their meeting is a laugh-out riot!
I can't wait for DC to release further TPB collections of HAWKMAN.
Fly softly and carry a big mace!.......2003-07-02
Even if I hadn't written the profile pages for this tpb I'd still go out of my way to tell people that it rocks. The introduction by Johns alone is worth the price of admission. Hawkman has been given a new lease on his four-color life and has never flown straighter nor looked better (with art by RAGS MORALES predominantly, the listing up there for Patrick notwithstanding). This is a trade collection that you'll go back to time and again for adventure and mystery.
Brilliant High Flying Fun.......2003-06-20
Geoff Johns is perhaps the best comic book talent to surface in a looooong time. His passion for characters and story telling are never more apparent than in this collected edition of Hawkman. Following the Winged Wonder on his newly reincarnated adventures, these stories will entrance you with mystery and enthrall you with a unique romance. If you missed out on these books, pick up this trade. You will enjoy the flight!

Customer Reviews:
A Treasure Chest.......2005-03-25
The updated third edition of Gaustad and Noll's "Documentary History" is even more reader-friendly. "Church History Journal" has it right, "The most comprehensive set of documentary materials on American religion to date."
From the religions of the Native Americans, to the beliefs of the Puritans, to the thoughts of the Deists, to the religious experiences of women, to the worship of black slaves, and everything in between, the editors weave together a tapestry of the American religious experience. Truly "a treasure chest containing varied essentials of our country's past" ("Religious Studies Review").
Readers can expect to find four essential sections accompanying every reading. First, the editors provide an introductory overview of each time period, placing the readings in historical context. Second, they share a brief, enticing narrative introducing the author and the context for his or her writing. Third, they provide the writing itself, along with bibliographic documentation. Fourth, they conclude each section with an extensive annotated bibliography. For historical researchers like myself, wanting to do primary research, this section alone is "worth the price of the book."
"Documentary History" is a rare historical work due to its combination of breadth and depth. As already noted, Gaustad and Noll provide materials on every imaginable "religious group" within American history. Their selection and presentation demonstrates an unbiased commitment to fairly represent all traditions. To this breadth of coverage they add depth of selection-their readings are not mere paragraphs torn out of context. Rather, they are extended readings with enough material to gain a true picture of American religion-first hand, first person.
One might wish for more documents concerning the American Hispanic religious experience (one or two documents discuss American Hispanic Catholicism). The early immigration of Asians to the western United States before the Civil War could also have allowed for documents representing the Asian American religious experience. However, what we have remains a rich chronicle of the drama of American religious history.

Book Description
When chic Manhattanites absolutely must throw an amazing party, there's only one name programmed into their speed dials: Serena. With a client list that includes Sigourney Weaver, Nathan Lane, Bernadette Peters, and Iman, the woman knows how to host a gathering. It's no wonder New York magazine called her company, Serena Bass, Incorporated, "the best food in the city, hands down."
In Serena, Food and Stories, the fabulous Ms. Bass shares 100 choice recipes, from Guadalajara Hash for brunch, to Chicken Curry Tea Sandwiches, to a mouth-watering Italian buffet. Organized into menus for 11 occasions, large and small, the focus is on ways to make guests feel both well fed and welcome. Part entertaining cookbook, part dishy memoir, this fun read includes charming anecdotes about Serena's family, friends, husbands, and her one faithful companion, Ruby-her little Westie. Between Serena's infectious, highly social vibe and the to-die-for dishes, it'll definitely keep home cooks-and their hungry pals-turning the pages. AUTHOR BIO: London-born SERENA BASS is a high-profile caterer based in New York City. In addition to her successful catering business, she is the namesake behind Serena, the bar/lounge in the basement of the Chelsea Hotel, which she opened in 1999 and has since sold. This is her first book.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK.......2005-08-06
My family and I love Serena, Food & Stories and have given copies to each member of our family and special friends. It combines extremely delicious and easy to follow recipes with lively illustrations, beautiful photographs, and totally engaging stories; it is so much more than a cookbook. The Raspberry Frangipane Pie with Almond Whipped Cream is fantastic. Serena Bass' warm hearted spirit and love of cooking set this book apart. My daughter and I whole heartedly reccomend this special cook book.
Full disclosure.......2005-06-26
While I have to admit first thing that my wife and I are friends of Serena's and mentioned in the acknowledgements, let me also say that we were used repeatedly to test, taste and attempt to prepare the dishes in the book as it was written. I have eaten nearly all and endeavored to cook a great number of the recipes and I can personally attest to their appeal. Serena's way with straightforward, high-quality ingredients and a restless imagination produces extraordinary food that can be prepared by us, mere mortals.
And just when I think I've heard all the stories Serena can muster she blithely unearths another nugget of her past, recent or otherwise, and surprises me with how many lives she's lived.
This is a great cookbook and an tantalizing look into one of the
most interesting and dynamic women I've met. A star in the making.. you heard it here.
A Cook's Book.......2005-05-17
A dinner party is not simply the food that you prepare. It is the care taken in the preparation, the friends with whom you share it and the reminiscence after-the-fact with your significant other or friends. If you are lucky, you will get plenty of "oohs" and "aahs" during the event, but the mark of true success is when your guests are still talking about it days and weeks later.
Serena, Food & Stories has all of the necessary ingredients for a fabulous event. This is both a cook book and a cook's book. Complete with easy to follow recipes, great stories, and photos that make your mouth water. I keep all of my cookbooks together in a cabinet, this one I keep on my counter-top. I grab it when I need a great recipe or when I simply want to read and daydream about my next dinner party.
The Only Cookbook You'll Ever Need For Daily Life!!!.......2005-05-17
I have worshipped Serena Bass from afar for many years. I arrived back in New York City too late to eat at her Chelsea basement retreat, but knew of her from many who had and adored her cooking. She has not catered for me because I haven't had an event that needed catering. However, I have kept up with her through interviews and food magazines. I was delighted to see she had written a book of her life and adventures and bought it. She does not disappoint. The book is like Serena Bass: Beautiful and brilliant. Full of wonderful stories and practical recipes for those items you cook on a daily basis. Or want to cook but are afraid to. She makes it oh so easy for you. The photographs are stunning and make your mouth water. Everything from Vanilla Cupcakes to tasty Vinaigrettes. My favorites.
I lived and worked in London in the late 60s and early 70s and miss the country, the people and the food. Yes, the food. There is something warm and homey about English cooking and she has filled this beautiful book with lots of recipes that bring back happy memories of my time there. You can sit for hours reading this book from cover-to-cover and I heartily recommend that you do. Fix yourself a nice hot cuppa and sit back and be swept away. It's truly Serena's world. We only live in it. Or wish we did! Buy this book and you will never have to spend another dime on anything else. Glorious!!!!
FABULOUS WHETHER YOU LIKE TO COOK OR EAT.......2005-03-07
I'm a huge fan of eating but not cooking - and I loved this book (and am making my boyfriend, who does like cooking, do all the recipes for me...) The photographs are mouthwatering, the recipes the perfect blend of comfort and posh food, and Serena's own life stories entertaining and moving. Plus I love the large amounts of highly practical advice scattered throughout about how to entertain, serve and hostess effectively - lots of things I would never have thought of but which make fantastically good sense. Highly recommended.

Love Heidi's books.......2007-08-31
I've recently discovered Heidi Boyd's bead books. I love her ideas and instructions. They aren't "way out there" but are original, simple designs and the instructions are very visual and easy to follow.
beading book.......2007-05-15
The book was just as advertised. Projects I feel capable of doing as a beginning beader.
Only for beginners.......2007-04-24
If this is your first beading book you might find useful information here. If you've been beading for some time this book offers nothing, the projects are way too simple, more for kids than adults. It feels that the author is only starting with beading herself, she has not learned enough to teach others. There are so much better beading books out there, don't waste your money on this.
Simply Beautiful Beading.......2007-04-02
Good book with great projects to try. Good for beginners or anyone starting to learn the great hobby of jewerly making.
Good for a beginner.......2006-12-08
This book is good for a beginner. However, I did not find it as useful as I'd hoped... I wish there was more discussion about the different types of wire and thread, and how and when and for which types of projects to use them, since this is such a big part of beading. However, she did a good job of explaining how to use a crimp bead and how to make an earring loop, also important. But she mostly offers information overload without really clarifying HOW to use the different materials and findings, which can be overwhelming at first. I suppose if you work through the many projects in the book, these details would become more clear. However, I really didn't care for most of the projects in this book. Fortunately, given all the varieties of beads and findings, the sky's the limit... no need for someone else's recipe.

Julian Opie (Tate Modern Artists)
ASIN: 3775713018
Release Date: 2003-03-02 |
Book Description
Composed of his characteristically simplified lines and shapes, Julian Opie's portraits are rendered through computer technology. Beginning with a photograph scanned into a computer, the artist uses software to edit the images and hone in on their graphic essentials. The fascinating results become icons that serve to identify the individuals with the least information possible. Whereas most of Opie's portraits feature unknowns, people drawn from his personal life, some commissioned works feature public figures like Kate Moss or Michael Schumacher. But, by identifying them in the titles only by their first names, Opie zaps these celebrities of their fame and mythic status, simplifying them down to the familiar, human shape of their faces. Portraits comes complete with a "create your own cover image" binding and a selection of miniature stickers of portraits that can be tipped onto the front cover. Published in conjunction with Codax Publisher.

The Height of German Romanticism.......2000-11-28
Twenty years divides this wonderful book from the more popular, The Sorrows of Young Werther which was written when Goethe was quite young. Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship belongs to the second period of Goethe's life and his writings and is the purest representation of that second period, having been written over a ten-year period.
This novel is nothing less than a masterpiece of art of the highest order. The problems inherent in a surfeit of emotion and sentimental despair are solved in Wilhelm Meister. Instead of running rampant, as it did in Werther, enthusiasm is channeled in Wilhelm Meister. The protagonist has managed to make peace with the forces that threaten to annihilate him. His once gloomy and perturbed spirit is serene and vital.
More importantly, this harmony and peace have not been achieved through any kind of surrender or crushing blow to the spirit. Instead, the protagonist, once an ardent and high-spirited young man, has simply grown into a calm and serene man; one whose passion and ardor have not waned over the years but have simply ripened. He has managed to give up the foolish idealism of his youth and has built his trust in himself and his own instincts. The darkness of dreams, a landscape on which he used to flounder has become firmer and surer ground.
The characters in this book are blended perfectly: the softness and skepticism of Jarno, the commercialism of Werner, the polish of Lothario, the enthusiasm of the Harper, the vivacity of Philina and the mystic, ethereal nature of the highly spiritual Mignon. Goethe, of course, does justice to each, and places each in his proper element. The mild-hearted Wilhelm, so full of promise and hope, continues to struggle forward, through a myriad of complications toward his world of art.
Goethe, one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived, united all into a whole so perfect and perfectly harmonious, that Wilhelm Meister becomes nothing less than sheer poetry, the very height of German Romanticism at its finest. This marvelous book reveals life in all of its multi-layered existence; it uncovers the beauty and hidden meaning is the mundane; it reveals the perfection of the universe in all its clarity.
Far too many people are scared away from Goethe because of his towering intellectualism, but he wrote in a style the is both gorgeous and readable. Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship is the very pinnacle of German Romanticism and one of the greatest books of world literature. It would be a pity for anyone to miss it.
