Book Description
At times literary, at other times surreal, this collection offers an eclectic group of stories that deal with real-life conflicts, human values, and coming-of-age experiences all placed within fantastical settings. One tale recounts the author's search for a Kafka story that can only be found in an elusive and quite possibly cursed edition. Other stories feature humans dressing in full-body protective exoskins in the personas of old Hollywood movie stars to barter old Earth movies for an alien aphrodisiac and a young boy coming to terms with creation and molding his own man out of detritus from a nearby forest. In the title story, a great fantasy writer loses touch with the world he has created and pleads with his young assistant to help him visualize the story's end and enable him to complete his greatest novel ever.
Customer Reviews:
Literate, scholarly and fun stories..........2006-02-01
I've only read THE FANTASY WRITER'S ASSISTANT from this collection so far, but it was a weird, twisted and fun take on plain old heroic fantasy told in a literate way. That's what I liked most-- Ford's refusal to write stuffy fiction despite his intellectual ability to do so. Add to that an approach to the idea that involves writers themselves, and you've got potential for a cult book here. I've bought all five of his books that I could find, and have plans to read them.
Ford is an original.......2005-02-01
Ford's short stories are finely crafted gems that displays an originality of vison entirely it's own.
Sometimes absurdist, sometimes surrealistic or bleakly humorours but always humane and profound,
this short stories are great examples of contemporary fantastical fiction.
And he isnt even in bookstores..........2004-05-03
Its a sad commentary that Jeffrey Fords work is not in major bookstores. I know because I've looked. I realize they only keep newer titles, unless a particular writer or work has had much success. But still.
Reading Exo-skeleto town in FWA (the first one I read), I thought, Wow. This is probably the best story in this book. Because its so good that a writer cant possibly keep up this level of quality. And usually there are maybe two or three gems in a short story collections; the rest is garbage.
Then I read Fantasy writers assistant. And was proven wrong. Not only is FWA better than exo town, but each subsequent story I read gets better and better. I can say besides maybe the work of Chuck Beaumont, and a Joe Lansdale, I've never read a guy who packs this much quality into each and every short story.
Cheers Jeff...
A must have book........2004-03-26
This will forever be one of my all time favorite books. I will lend this to my close friends, loved ones, and one day read to my children before bed. This is the type of book that makes you want to be a writer. Each short story is better than the last. His writing is so incredible that it would be wrong to describe him by comparing to others. But, if you need a reference, Jorge Luis Borges and Steven Millhauser tap into the same realm of great imagry and imagination. Plus, after each story Ford reveals his inspirations, and techniques (basically the behind the scene story).
It's a must have book.
Brilliant........2003-09-24
Again, Ford defies any and all conventions or genres and just does his thing - tell incredible stories that just leave you slack-jawed. Some are horror tales, some pure fantasy, and a couple sci-fi (more "fi" than "sci") for good measure, if they were to be categorized.
Throughout, the tales are dreamlike. but instead of drifting apart in strange directions, they have their own unique logic and cohesion, amplified by Ford's mastery of language, cadence, and pure style. This is one hell of a gifted writer who's following his own muse. I'd throw out a couple comparisons to other writers, but there are none that are even in the same "zip code" as Ford. Excellent book.

Very highly recommended.......2001-02-03
Darbys and Fitzgeralds have been feuding as long as Texas has been a state. Nevertheless, Katie thought Jake was nice, especially after he taught her how to ride a bike. That incident resulted in her brother and friends beating Jake soundly, before her father joined the fray. Nevertheless, their young attraction blossomed into love before Katie graduated from high school when Katie promised to love Jack forever.
When Katie had gone away to college she had begged Jack to join her. Jack refused, and in less than a year Katie married, had a child and divorced. Eleven years later Katie has moved her son Shane back to her home town to open her business as a physical therapist. One of her first patients is Hattie Darby, Jack's mother.
Jake couldn't leave his family's ranch. Leaving would make Jake like his father, who abandoned his mother and seven children. Instead, he set out to provide well for his family and his forays into oil and horse breeding assured his mother of a comfortable, modern home. Jake had given up the idea of marriage and family, even if he can't squelch his attraction to Katie. Even if their attraction feels just like eleven years ago when they were young and in love and "close to dying if they didn't kiss one more time."
Katie's father provides tension to the story, presenting a harsh and abrasive character. Not only does he keep the ancient feud alive between the Darbys and Fitzgeralds, but he also expresses his displeasure with his grandson Shane's masculinity. Shane is terrified of his grandfather, preferring computers to cattle. Katie and Shane's temporary new home with Aaron was supposed to bring the family closer together while their own home was being built. Instead, the plan seems to be a miserable failure. Yet Katie loves her father, despite his rough edges and old-fashioned ways.
THE RANCHER NEXT DOOR by Susan Mallery is a terrific read. I admit to enjoying Mallery's language choices, such as when she describes Katie as "a gallon of trouble in a pint-sized container." In addition to a fantastic hero and heroine, the secondary casts of characters are remarkably vivid with their individual defining characteristics. No character feels gratuitous, rather, each character adds to the spice of the whole, lending the novel a lovely complexity and depth. I especially love Hattie, whose zest for living led to a barrel racing accident, neatly providing Katie with her link to her lost love. Highly recommended.
A Great Story.......2001-01-25
I enjoy Susan Mallery's work, especially after reading her *Desert Rogues* Trilogy. This is the first in her *Lone Star Canyon* Series, and I recommend it very much! Very believable.

A refreshingly well-presented story .......2005-08-22
Lone Star Lovin' was also a very natural flowing and believable story, emphasizing platonic friendships and adult-child relationship as much as the romance. I did find the small-town gossiping of the supporting characters to be rather stifling, and made me feel embarrassed for Cody and Sherry who weren't given a reasonable amount space and privacy. All-in-all, a very nice sweet story.
Lonestar Lovin'.......2003-04-22
Cal Bailman Is a hard working, good looking rancher who has neither the time or the patience for courting a woman. Fortunately Cody's twelve year old daughter heather is determined to teach him about romance.Because she's got her eye on newcomer sherrry Waterman as the woman who's just perfect for dad. Sherry Waterman she's discovering that texan men are truely are a breed apart. especially the stubborn Cody Bailman. She's definely attracted to the man in fact she's darn close to falling in love with him but she'd like a little romance first! I love this story! it is a fun and great ! i would read this story again and again!

WHO-- IS-- "Mister X" ?????.......2006-08-26
Designers Dean Motter & Paul Rivoche concocted the premise of a detective working in "Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS". Cool idea. A slew of promotional posters set the comics world on fire anticipating the series. But before the 1st issue was ever drawn, Motter got bored with the concept, and creative disagreements saw Rivoche walk without pencilling a single issue. Sheesh. DESPITE this, a dense, FASCINATING, sometimes stunning, if often flawed work emerged.
Under a dazzling series of covers by Rivoche & Motter, The Hernandez Bros. (LOVE & ROCKETS) supplied the art for the initial episodes, which introduce the locale and the characters. We have Arnie Zamora, a gangster-gone-(not quite) straight, his faithful goons and his irresponsible moll, Patrice; Mercedes, the sweet-hearted waitress (my favorite character in the series); and the mysterious title character, who seems to be known by different names to quite a few people. "X" gets in Zamora's way, Patrice plays a joke on her man, and by the end of part 2 things take a VERY abrupt, surprising turn for "poor" Arnie.
Parts 3 & 4 find "X" hospitalized due to an accident. While there, he hallucinates about his past... but is it really HIS past we see? A picture begins to take shape about who this guy Mercedes calls "Santos" really is, and one might mistakenly get comfortable by the end of episode 4.
But then things go REALLY strange in Ep.5, "The Bizarre Death Of Walter Eichmann"-- when the man we've been led to believe "X" really is turns up, fills us in on a completely DIFFERENT view of events, only to get murdered before we're sure one way or the other. Klaus Schonefeld's pencils this episode, and his architecture seems to capture Rivoche's original intent better than the Hernandez boys; but I prefer their people to his. Ty Templeton's inks are sharp & refined. Sadly, the new team lasted only ONE episode. Schonefeld began his own "sister book", KELVIN MACE, a comedy (?) about a halfwit, excessively-violent detective who appears to operate in the same town as Mister X; while Templeton did the genuinely funny STIG'S INFERNO. Ty went on to do a lot of work at DC Comics (JUSTICE LEAGUE, etc.) while tragically, Klaus was killed in a biking accident after only completing 2 issues of his own series.
Newcomer Seth picked up the ball for the rest of the long initial storyline. Frankly, his art is too "loose" for my tastes-- not just "cartoony" but like someone still learning how to draw people. Also, the "storytelling" is a bit more distant, dense and hard to figure out. It's been said one should either tell simple stories in a complex fashion, or complex stories in a SIMPLE fashion. When you have a complex mystery and the storytelling makes it VERY difficult to figure out what you're looking at, it can be a problem.
At any rate, ep. 6, "The Revenge Of Zamora", sees a maddened Arnie, escaped from jail, out to get the people who did him wrong. As it unfolds, it becomes more and more confusing... Is "Mister X" THIS guy-- THIS guy-- or THAT guy??? Only Arnie seems to have REALLY figured it out-- but his growing brutality and violence finally catches up with him before it can do him any good, OR he can tell anyone what he knows!! Like the climax of ep.2, ep.6 ends ABRUPTLY, shockingly, but SATISFYINGLY. Except... WE still don't know for sure who "X" is!
"THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION Volume One" is not without flaws. In ep.2, pages 9 & 10 are reversed, and page 17 is missing, replaced by page 17 from ep.1. Then, in ep.4, page 9 is missing, replaced by page 9 from ep.3! I don't understand a "professional" publisher letting stuff like this slip by, but it does suggest behind-the-scenes problems that led to the company going BELLY-UP only months after VOL.2 was issued-- months late.
VOL.1 contains Dave McKean's wonderful, spooky "Tales From Somnopolis" episode as a prologue, and Bill Sienkiewicz's incomprehensible (and unfinished) mess, "The Brain Of Mister X", as bonuses, along with a collection of Paul Rivoche's sketches & promotional posters, SOME of which would have made BETTER covers than what actually got used. (See page 6 for what I feel SHOULD have been the cover for issue #1!) But oddly, the original "Tales of Somnopolis" back-up stories are missing. WHY???
But MY main problem is the "design" work. The book is printed on the SAME size paper as the original comics-- but the art, on those pages, has been SHRUNK from 9-1/4" to 8-1/2" in height. WHY??? Then you've got those book page numbers, enclosed in little red "X"'s, where the numbers are SO SMALL you can hardly read them. For a book so concerned with "design", this is inexcusable.
Motter went on to do a sequel to THE PRISONER (the nerve of some people!) as well as TERMINAL CITY and ELECTROPOLIS, both of which can be viewed as sequels to MISTER X. Rivoche did stunning work on designs & backgrounds for Warner Bros.' cartoon series of BATMAN, SUPERMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE. When I look at the opening credits of the feature film, BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM, I think, "WOW!!!" Those guys should adapt MISTER X into animated form. They could do it without changing the story, but the art could be done much more "consistent" in look and quality.
Despite the flaws of the work and the package, I HIGHLY reccomend this (especially for the price it can currently be found at). But for goodness' sake, get BOTH volumes!!! It's the ONLY way to really, completely understand the ENTIRE story. And now, you won't have to wait years-- or even months-- between episodes.
missing critical pages!.......2006-03-15
I read the series near the end of the initial run, and caught up with the original hardcover "The Return of Mr. X" which included only the first 4 issues, the Hernandez Bros. issues. First, the quality of this, at least the copy I got, is terrible. The color is a mess, the registration is a mess, it's dark and muddy. Second, as mentioned below, in at least 2 or 3 places, there are complete pages totally missing. It's obvious as instead, they repeat an earlier page. And I'd say if not in both, in least one instance, the page is completely critical to following the story and seeing how it unfolds.
It's also a shame that this book doesn't include the 3 Tales from Somnopolis back-up stories Gilbert and Mario created for the hardcover Return Of... collection. If you want, Gilbert's stuff was recently published by Fantagraphics in a one-off called Tales from Shock City or something.
Finally, I think the intros were pretty off-base in their complete dismissal of the efforts of the Hernandez Brothers. Yes, I'm a big Love and Rockets fan, but I was also a fan of Motter's story, of Rivoche's illustrations, Seth's work, etc. But Motter saying Jaime's illustrations don't capture the art-deco look of their intended aesthethic? That just seems odd. There are any number of beautiful examples of Jaime drawing Radiant City in the same manner as Motter and Rivoche had created it.
If you want the complete story, the easiest thing is to buy both volumes of this collection, but I'd really suggest you look for The Return of Mr. X trade paperback. The hardcover costs a bit of money now, but I think there was a softcover edition as well, so you'll at least get the proper pages, not to mention much higher quality reproduction. Of course if you can find the hardcover, go for it, it's a beautiful collection including the aforementioned Gilbert/Mario stories and even more background material, including some beautiful Paul Rivoche pages from the original proposed Mr. X.
Avoid this reissue!.......2005-08-03
Don't get this version - it's full of mistakes. Pages are missing, others are duplicated or out-of-order. Really sad, because Mr. X is a great work. But iBooks really screwed this reissue up. I don't know about volume 2, because why get it if this one is so badly printed?

Meeting a Need!.......2007-02-08
5 Stars for this book because it's, as far as I know, the only one of its kind. And as are all of Dr. Epperly's books, it is well written and easily and eagerly read. Reiki, a method and practice of hands-on and distance healing prayer, is growing in popularity around the world. It's Eastern roots and flavor may lead some more "conservative" Christians to keep their distance. But that would be their loss. Prayer transcends any specific theology, and God is God, no matter the language one uses in prayer. So this consideration of Reiki practice, and its placement within the Christian context of prayer and worship, is a valuable contribution and an ecumenical bridge-builder. To learn the gentle genius of Reiki itself, you'll need to go beyond this book. But for Christians to get "permission" to do so, here's a place to begin.
An Excellent Book on Christianity and Reiki .......2006-11-15
Being a Reiki Master and Christian I found this book informative and affirming. Reiki translated from Japanese is 'Universal Life Energy'. And who is the source of that? Ummm...
This book wonderfully explains how Reiki fits in with the Christian tradition of the laying on of hands. It speaks of healing on the emotional, spiritual and physical level.
Bruce & Ktherine Epperly's ecumenical approach to 'the laying on of hands'/Reiki speaks volumes of the healing love of God.
A happy meeting of East and West.......2005-10-11
A shining book! Reiki Healing Touch affirms our deepest intuition about love, that it heals. The authors unearth the deep mysteries of healing energy, not only from the Christian-Buddhist, Mikao Usui, but from the healing ministry of Jesus. East and West meet in this happy book of hope.
--Patricia Adams Farmer, author of Embracing a Beautiful God.

Gorgeous series.......2003-11-24
I own this and all the Country Garden series of cookbooks. They are all visually gorgeous, and all written by professional chefs. Each book surrounds a featured ingredient which is seasonal. I must admit that many of the recipes could be considered "chi-chi," but for cookbook collectors, this series is really wonderful. I'm sorry they stopped adding to these books, and very sorry that they are going out of print.

More than a Biography..........2000-08-13
This gorgeous memoir showcasing Bradbury Thompson's work for Westvaco Paper is, without doubt, one of the most prized books in my design library. It is beautifully crafted and printed and is a full-color, visually rich stroll through one of the most significant design careers of the 20th century. Reflections from several contributors guide readers through Thompson's experiences at Westvaco and reveal the imagination and intelligence of an unassuming genius. The text is a balanced accompaniment to his work and unpacks the philosophically and technically innovative processes Thompson used for producing exceptionally creative work in the post-war world of publishing. Thompson is not afraid to credit sentiment, collaborate with the other arts, or find inspiration in any source. Furthermore, his solutions are sensitive to the practical demands of life in the 40's and 50's. Deadlines, the value of humor, the importance of family, and the desire for experimentation are woven throughout the chapters and projects. The book is organized by projects and ranges from his Monalphabet, Alphabet 26, and designing the Washburn Bible to purely aesthetic concerns of creating motion with graphics and type. Students and designers who believe visually exciting, cutting-edge design is exclusive to their own immediate recollections of 20th century trends will be amazed to discover ideas, visual experimentation and originality over fifty years old. This is also print design pre-dtp and so the manipulations of type, image and color are absolute technical marvels. The resulting aesthetic is stronger than simply a cool retro "look" and for most designers will be simply ... inspirational.

A wonderful collection of essays -- don't miss it!.......1999-06-10
I could not disagree more with the cynical, pseudo-intellectual author of the Kirkus Review of this wonderful book. OF COURSE Mr. De Vinck's essays do not "accurately" depict the harsher realities of childhood -- that is not his objective. The essays read more like fairy tales for adults, spun out of the simple stuff of everyday life -- the small, insignificant events that each of us, no matter how dreadful our childhoods were, still remember and from which we can gain strength and understanding as adults. This book will always have a prominent place on my bookshelf, and I find myself turning to it again and again, whenever I need to be reminded of the important things in life. I highly recommend it, as well as Mr. De Vinck's other books.

Customer Reviews:
Maureen Taylor.......2006-03-19
Does an excellent job of organizing and establishing time lines for photos. Very glad to find a copy.
Information Vague and Contradictory.......2004-05-02
Taylor may give readers a good place to start in their efforts to preserve family photographs, but offers information that is both contradictory and vague.
She gives a basic explanation of the "enemies" your photographs are facing, even breaking down information on particular types of photographs, tintypes, Polaroids, etc. But does not bother defining some basic terms in the glossary such as lignin. Nor are many of her suggestions for which supplies are appropriate specific enough. Eg., what kind of brush should I use to clean photos? I know that Nylon brushes are probably not soft enough for treasured photos. Even worse she says polyethylene is a bad material to store your photos in, but a few pages later suggests using polyethylene freezer bags for freezer storage of items.
Taylor includes lengthy lists of resources for, and more information on preservation. But some of the web addresses she lists no longer exist.
While she has some good suggestions for long-term storage of photo collections, I would not recommend this book to anyone trying to learn about photographic preservation.
Excellent for do-it-yourself photo preservation.......2002-07-23
For me, studying old photos is one of the more fascinating aspects of family research, even when I'm not related to any of the people whose faces appear. The military uniforms, hats, parlor furniture, automobiles, urban scenes, and especially the faces and their expressions, are like a kind of time travel, allowing you to peer back into someone's past. Taylor's previous book, _Uncovering Your Ancestry Through Family Photographs,_ investigated that process. But how to protect the photos you already have tucked away in albums have so future family members will get the same pleasure (and information) from them? And how to rehabilitate those you discover to whom the years and the elements have not been kind? This time, the author outlines the steps you can take to see that your photographs have the best chance of survival and describes the methods conservators and restoration experts follow when the task becomes too much for you. She also guides you through the process of creating a meaningful scrapbook of archival quality, discusses the use of computer enhancement and electronic archives, and points out the legal aspects of posting photographs on a web site. Most of the chapters end with checklists and answers to frequently-asked questions, and there are many sidebars and brief marginal comments regarding further reading and useful Internet resources on the subject. Keeping in mind that the technical aspects of photographic restoration and preservation continue to evolve rapidly, this is an excellent beginner's guide and reference handbook.
The lyrics of the song are wrong........2001-07-08
Mama won't take your Kodachrome away, it is time and the elements which are attacking your treasured family photographs. Your Polaroid snapshots are fading as you read this. Those "magnetic" photo albums with the adhesive pages are gassing your family pictures to crumbs. Your digital images may not be viewable by your great grandchildren. But don't give up hope - take action. Maureen Taylor's "Preserving Your Family Photographs" tells you how to take charge and protect your family's photographic history. "Preserving Your Family Photographs" shows you how taking some simple steps now will slow down the aging process of your photographs. And its doesn't require a chemistry set. The book further discusses how and when to choose a professional conservator, concerns about digital photography, how to organize your collection, and even how to safely place your treasures in a scrapbook. This book takes up where "Uncovering Your Ancestry Through Family Photographs" leaves off. After you've identified your family photographs, "Preserving Your Family Photographs" tells you how to keep them for generations to come.

Since there were no reviews of this book, I took a chance and found a gem. We recently lost a baby mid-way through pregnancy. I've read many recommended books which have been very helpful. This one really touched my heart. Nearly all of the reflections spoke to me. I could have written many of them myself. Kristen has obviously lived this tragedy and expresses it with eloquent simplicity. I also loved the quotes from scripture, many of which I plan to highlight when I re-read the book. Overall, a great, comforting, heart-reaching book. I only wish that it were longer.

Quality Family Time.......2004-12-24
I received this book as a gift from a teacher girlfriend. At first I was overwhelmed-it's a big book. My friend told me to trust her, pick a page (any page), gather my kids and start. I am glad I did.
I started with an interview titled "All the Senses". As an introduction, my 5 and 7 year olds and I talked about what our senses were. Then I interviewed them, writing down both of their answers to questions about their favorites smells, sounds, sensations, sights...in the same book. The kids liked having this "talking time" with me. After a few minutes, my husband, overhearing us, stopped doing the dishes and joined us so he could listen too.
In our family, the temptation is to just get things done in the evening. This book helps my husband and me spend just 10 or 20 precious minutes really talking and communicating with the kids. It's easy. It's fun and together we're creating a keepsake treasure. I recommend it to parents everywhere.

Alan Jackson- Precious Memories Songbook.......2007-05-14
I was initially excited to find this songbook, but , after the fact,
I am really disappointed in the book. I was expecting the music to
be the arrangements that were on his music CD Precious Memories. In fact,
the arrangments in the songbook are only reprints of the arrangements
that appear in any church hymnal. Hymnal music is FREE! I have returned
the songbook to Amazon for a hoped-for refund!

Baby book.......2007-03-08
This book is wonderful for people who are looking for a book that documents a Baby Dedication rather than a Christening. I was given this book for my first child as a shower gift and loved it so much I sought it out for my second baby. I love this book and I plan on getting another one for my last child!
