Book Description
THE GIRL WHO TROD ON A LOAF immerses us in the lives of two women in a small upstate New York town-a single mother of twin daughters who waits tables (despite her privileged background) and the elderly Danish composer who she brefriends. At the heart of their peculiar friendship is a Hans Christian Andersen tale (the subject of the composer's final opera) about a prideful girl who is damned for using a loaf of bread, intended as a gift for her parents, as a stepping stone.

A Wonderful Story on a Magical Canvas.......2004-01-23
Our dreaded, daily misuse of carbohydrates has even the U.S. Surgeon General concerned. In the Hans Christian Andersen story, The Girl Who Trod on a Loaf, waste is at issue more than healthy eating.
Inger treasures her shoes more than the bread she was asked to deliver to her family. Therefore, as with any failed diet plan, Inger sinks to the bottom of a bog and turns to stone. The pure weight of Inger's sin holds her in place while her eyes dart about and her ears hear every ugly thing said about her in her absence.
In Kathryn Davis' novel, the idea of Inger's sin is revisited by Helle Ten Brix, a spunky lesbian composer who seeks to change the world's view of the bread sin. Frances Thorn and Helle Ten Brix are unlikely friends in life and odd partners after Helle's death.
As Frances seeks to piece together clues about Helle's unusual life and to complete an inherited unfinished opera for her dead friend, she takes a revealing journey that proves both entertaining and thought-provoking for the reader.
Spellbinding.......2002-02-06
Kathryn Davis is a master storyteller in the truest sense of the word. Not only does she cast a spell over her readers, compelling them to read on and on, but her subject matter is unique and uniquely presented.
A fictional romantic mystery involving the intertwining of two unlikely characters, an elderly, Danish composer of operas and a young American single mother, the story begins at Helle's hospital deathbed and is told through Frances Thorn, the young mother and sole support of twin girls who was drawn into an intimate friendship by the elderly female composer. When Helle dies, she leaves Frances a legacy: An unfinished opera. Frances is faced with the task of its completion. Rummaging through the things that Helle has left behind, Frances comes to grips with her own identity as she discovers the hidden secrets of Helle's life.
Readers are treated to a look at Denmark and the Danish not found in a tour guide and a sense of the operatic that will move even the most hardened souls to music.
Through Helle and Frances, Kathryn Davis tells us that even in the darkest corners of our deepest secrets, liberty and salvation may be found.

A Satisfying Conclusion to a Good Miniseries.......1999-09-21
After a weaker second installment, the "Captive Hearts" miniseries bounces back in its third and final installment, "The Safe Hostage." In the previous books (which take place simultaneously with this one), we saw Carrie Lamb acting very strangely following a hostage situation. Now we get to find out why, and the answer proves to be very satisfying. Ms. Miles keeps her leads on the run, while gradually peeling back the secrets that surround them. Carrie and Ryan are two strong, admirable people, showing some remarkable ingenuity at times, and their gradual transformation from distrust to trust was very well done. I truly appreciated how well all the stories were integrated, with Carrie's appearances in the other two books making perfect sense with how they play into her own tale. That's not to say it's necessary to read the other books first; this one simply complements them so well. A story brimming over with action and heart-pounding romance, "The Safe Hostage" is not to be missed.

5 Mass Market Paperback Titles By Green - The Healers - Last Angry Man - Hostage Heart - Karpov's Brain - To Brooklyn with Love
Book Description
Introduction by Ambassador Monteagle Stearns. Taken hostage by Congolese rebels at the U.S. Consulate he headed in Stanleyville, Michael Hoyt provides the first inside account of the 1964 seizure of the American consulate staff and their one hundred and eleven days of captivity. Their survival and eventual rescue offer a gripping story of courage and frustration, survival and sadness of lives lost. The first time that American diplomats have been held hostage since the Barbary pirate days of the 1800s, these events, as described by the author, present valuable lessons both for the future conduct of hostages and the policies to deal with their taking.
The book chronicles their day-by-day ordeal as communist-backed rebels held them in confinement at the central prison in Stanleyville and elsewhere, including even the women's toilet at the airport terminal. Throughout the period they lived in terror, several times being led to what they believed was their execution and somehow surviving a final desperate attempt by the rebels to gun them down when Belgian paratroopers, flown in by American C-130s, arrived to rescue them. While helping readers appreciate the intensity of the drama as it unfolded, Hoyt is remarkably objective in his account. His description of the final moments of sheer terror before they were saved is unforgettable. Presented in cooperation with the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training.

Memoirs from new head of the American Consulate in the Congo in Volatile 1964.......2007-03-03
The then new head of the American Consulate in the Congo writes his well- documented and dignified personal recollection of consulate staff being imprisoned, beaten, threatened by cannibals, hopping to escape the knives being hurled at their feet and sentanced to death almost weekly in the uprisings of 1964. One day they would be locked in a filthy, tiny womens bathroom, crowded, trying to sleep upright to the sound of shooting outside. One day they were dignitaries transported to a luxury hotel, then the next day they were hostages sleeping on boards in prison. All depended on relations and sympathies of whoever held the moment's power. Chaos reigns. Diplomatic rights and privilege only work occasionally and the captured are dependant upon whatever help comes from personnel at other consulates, people in various factions they worked with before capture, missionaries, and the saner elements of warring factions. With limited and sporatic communication they have no idea if their superiors are aware of the seriousness of the situation. Their own relentless efforts at negotiation have limited effect.
The first third of this harrowing tale is almost unreadable with military memos, uncertainty about what the political situation was and indecision or technical inability to respond. Hoyt attempts to stay clear headed and analytical amidst every source he talks to relaying often contradictory or seemingly absurd information. When orders were sent for civilians to evacuate many never received the orders and others refused to leave, not realizing how volatile and life-threatening Stanleyville would quickly become.
Interspersed are surreal war images such as a naked, young, dark girl lying on an officer's white sheets or captives being ordered to eat an American flag but not being able to chew it.
Once memos can't be quoted the events become much more readable and engrossing. Footnotes are fascinating with references such as Eartha Kitt calling the rescue of the hostages another example of whites killing blacks.
Aware and unaware of what is transpiring outside the prison/consulate/hotel walls, written from daily notes kept during the revolt. Hoyt documents his account, with reflection and trying to stay scrupulous about differences of opinion or memory.
From a consulate's viewpoint, the book is a careful documentation of political revolt.

Another novelization of the "Dallas" TV series.......2005-11-11
"Hostage Heart" is the seventh in a series of novelizations on the 1980s "Dallas" TV series. The books come from the Soaps & Serials imprint of Pioneer Communications Network, which also did similar novelizations of TV's "Guiding Light," "Days of Our Lives" and "Dallas" spinoff "Knots Landing," among others. There are at least 14 books in the "Dallas" series.
This one is based on the second-season episodes "Fallen Idol" and "Kidnapped." Bobby and Pam have been married about one year, and Sue Ellen is pregnant with a child that she suspects belongs to Cliff Barnes, with whom she's carrying on a secret affair.
Bobby's college friend Taylor "Guzzler" Bennett comes to town for a visit. He was like a big brother to Bobby once, and Bobby learns that Guzzler is now in the construction business like he is. They strike up a partnership to build a mall on a parcel of Southfork Ranch that's near a new housing development. J.R. has other plans for that Section 40 of Southfork, however; he's been cutting illicit deals on the side to drill on that property -- against his parents' wishes. J.R. tries to derail Bobby's mall project, calling in a private eye to dig up the dirt on Guzzler and using Pamela as his flunky to bring Guzzler down with the information. But Bobby already knew the dirt on his buddy. Still, it's enough to drive Guzzler out of town.
Mixed into all of this (!) are the kidnappers who have their eyes on the Ewings. They aim to nab J.R., but when Bobby borrows J.R.'s car, the younger brother is grabbed instead. Cliff must act as the go-between with the kidnappers, putting him in a most uncomfortable alliance with the Ewing family. J.R. calls in the FBI, then he and Jock enlist the aid of Ray Krebbs and a team of sharpshooters to make sure Bobby's safe in the exchange, spare the $5 million ransom and take out the bad guys.

review on the book Pajama Sam.......2002-03-05
I thought this book was good and great for kid that like fiction book like this one. It a real nice book the book is about a little boy going to the moon to turn the light up because they can not see at a resturant.
4yr old son loved this book, I thought it was just OK........2001-11-30
His "5" and my "3" average out to a "4". We have 2 of the Pajama Sam games and the One Stop Fun Shop, and we love those products. This book was ok, but not stellar, IMO. But then, I'm not 4 years old, am I?
Instant hit at our house.......2000-12-03
I picked this book up because of the title(my third son's name is Sam)never expecting it to be the instant hit it was. Our 3 year old also loved this book. The characters are adorable, the pictures are cute, and there are even a few jokes in there for mom and dad. You will enjoy this story also. My 17 year old thought it was kinda corny the first time he read it to our little ones at bedtime, but now he asks if it is to be the first story of the night on his night to read to the younger ones.
It's a Riot - Fun for all Ages.......2000-11-29
You've got to buy this book. It is sooooo funny. It's about a boy named Sam who wears a cape and pajamas that looks like his favorite superhero's outfit. His best friend is a carrot. The adventure starts out with Pajama Sam and his best friend eating at a resturant. They and the other guest run into a problem reading the menu and Pajama Sam ends up going to the moon. Intermixed in the tale is lots of humor. Extremely funny and appropriate for all ages. The illustrations are very vivid and eye catching. My 19 month old daughter was hooked when she saw the cover. She loves the story too and has me read it to her over and over again.
Book Description
"Ecstasy is about waking up and finding that you are in love with life."
Most people think of ecstasy in terms of sexual ecstasy, which Tantric sex expert Margot Anand wrote about in her bestselling
The Art of Sexual Ecstasy. Now, in
The Art of Everyday Ecstasy, Anand expands our definition of ecstasy and shows how we can harness its energy to help us live, work, and love more passionately, joyfully, and with true spiritual focus.
Our modern, work-obsessed, stress-filled culture--what Anand calls the "anti-ecstatic conspiracy"--has dulled our spirits, thrown us off balance, and alienated us from meaningful everyday experiences. In this inspirational journey toward finding the healing nature of ecstasy, Anand explains how the two types of ecstatic experiences--the moments of epiphany called Ecstatic Awakenings, and EveryDay Ecstasy, or the Ecstasy of Flow, a connection to our power and inner wisdom--can help us move beyond pain and doubt to reach our highest potential.
Based on the spiritual path of Tantra, Anand shows how to use the natural energy system of our bodies--the seven chakras--as a map to ecstasy. As she guides us through the chakras, she explains how each one plays an important role in transforming energy into erotic passion, healing, empowerment, compassion, creativity, insight, and gratitude. Blocked chakras manifest themselves in surprising ways; wholeness can be achieved only when all of the chakras are open with energy flowing freely. By transforming negative behavioral patterns into positive ones and strengthening ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually, we can improve our health, sex life, career, relationships, and find profound meaning in everyday moments.
With personal anecdotes, exercises, meditations, and rituals,
The Art of Everyday Ecstasy shows us how to bring ecstatic energy into the body, mind, heart, and spirit--"to embrace every moment in our totality, to respond bodily, feel from the heart, perceive with clarity, and be fully present to others and to life."
Margot Anand is the bestselling author of
The Art of Sexual Ecstasy and
The Art of Sexual Magic. She founded the Sky Dancing Institute, a worldwide center for New Age learning, and has conducted her renowned Love and Ecstasy Trainings for the past fifteen years at Esalen, the Omega Institute, and Deepak Chopra's Center for Well Being. Anand lives in northern California.

i was afraid (as i am with many new age books) that "art of everyday ectasy" was going to err on the corny, enlightenment-pretending side like many in this genre. however, ms. anand brings solid, confident insight to this topic, and some very good ideas for rising to your own potential for everyday ectasy.

Interesting look at chakra based rituals.......2000-04-26
More from the Queen of Skydancing. If you`ve read either of her 2 previous books, this one is rituals minus the sex. All rather obvious. A lot comes direct from Osho - there`s a surprise! If you`re interested in chakras and/or rituals this may be an interesting read, otherwise try something else.
The best book on chakras I've read........1999-04-13
Lots of really good rituals and meditations that can help you center. Her writing is easy to read and clear to understand. A great book for people looking for ways to connect with themselves and others.

Book Description
Hundreds of thousands of people cannot eat corn. Being allergic or intolerant of corn, they repeatedly request a corn-free cookbook from bookstores, but until now there have been none. The Corn-Free Cookbook and Survival Guide now fills that need.
The numbers of corn-sensitive people are growing rapidly. At the same time, most packaged food contains corn derivatives, and hundreds of everyday food additives are made from corn. Thus it is incredibly difficult to avoid corn in one's diet. Surprisingly, corn is one of the top three causes of food intolerance in people.
The Corn-Free Cookbook and Survival Guide has more than 150 corn-free recipes with many variations for differences of taste. It provides recipes for quick meals, breads and grains, veggies and salads, fruits and fruit salads, meats and fish, beans and eggs, milk and cheese, casseroles, soups, and desserts.
The cookbook also teaches the survival skills people need when they must avoid corn, including how to read labels quickly, easily, and accurately. It also shows how to shop defensively (safely) at grocery stores, how to plan meals and customize recipes, how to add flavor with seasonings, and explain the difference between a corn allergy and a corn intolerance, and how to avoid corn at social events, restaurants, and while traveling.
In addition, The Corn-Free Cookbook and Survival Guide summarizes the current medical knowledge about food reactions, including hard-to-find information about food intolerance. As such, it is the perfect tool for families and friends of people with corn allergies.

Great for the newly diagnosed.......2007-08-01
This is a great book for someone just starting out on the journey toward becoming "corn-free". Since I bought the book for my 2 year old daughter, not all 0of the recipes were appropriate, but I have tried a few. The meal I made was yummy, but the pancakes I made turned out funny. I think I may just need to experiment more.
All in all I would recommend this book highly, and then say use the resources listed in the book to continue your journey toward a healthy, "corn-free" life.
Needed, wish it had more yet..........2007-07-11
My daughter and I have corn allergies. Fine and dandy. Hers got worse, and she had gotten into the habit of eating different stuff than her Mommy (she is 3) like graham crackers.
Anyhow, this week it got bad enough all that stuff had to go. We are taking her off all the common allergic foods, and corn of course in all forms. Not easy, no. But, I've done it for awhile. First thing is a trip to the whole foods section of the grocery store. Then an hour away to a specialized grocery store. And, lots of fresh ingredients. I found that many canned products don't contain it (tomatoes, green beans, etc), but some of thier frozen counterparts do. And, any spices, condiments, are suspect. Caramel coloring is corn based, baking soda, baking powder, vanilla and many others can contain corn starch, corn syrup, etc. But, there are brands out there that do not add it in (usually the price tag is higher).
Breads of all types are hard, but some don't add it. For me, the real challenge is being sure this is her only food she is allergic to. It is easier to do for yourself. Not so easy to keep a kid from asking people at playdates or playgroups, or school to trade snacks, etc. And, one thing I have learned from my own food allergies. Teach your kids what the food looks like. If they don't know, and go to a party with a mixed nuts bowl, they have no idea about peanuts, cashews, etc. And, one nut can do them in if that is thier allergy. Kids can't avoid a food they are allergic to if they don't know what it is in or what it looks like.
But, this book, and many others that deal with food allergies are a great way to get started. We are going to be doing a LOT of reading in this book this time around. And, I suspect we won't find ketchup premade (she loves the stuff), so the recipe in it for that will be super helpful.
The Corn Free Cookbook is a Lifesaver.......2006-08-04
Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views, 7/06
You just found out that you have a severe allergic reaction to corn. You think it's no big deal you will give up those golden kernels and everything will be all right. Wrong! Corn is a basic ingredient in many prepared foods. Corn is in the feed we give livestock. Suddenly you must read all labels watching for the offensive words, corn, corn syrup. Don't panic, there's help for you in "Many people have allergies and intolerance to Corn.".
"In this book you will find:
* Safe foods from ordinary grocery stores
* Quick, easy-to-fix meals
* Comfortable, familiar American dishes
* Seasoning variations for nay preference
* Cooking with few kitchen gadgets and little clean-up time
* Balanced, healthy meals
* Corn-syrup-free dieting for weight loss"
This book contains recipes for breads, salads, casseroles, desserts, and soups .The directions are simple to follow. The results are delicious. "Stove Top Chicken and Dumplings" is very good. "Roast Leg of Lamb" is a dish you will not hesitate to place in front of guests. I haven't tried "Homemade Spaghetti" yet but it's definitely on my list to try soon.
The authors go beyond recipes and educate the reader. Some of the many things they stress reading labels, defensive shopping, and careful planning. When your life is at stake it motivates you to learn all you can.
Having raised a son with a severe allergy to peanuts, I can appreciate the need for a recipe book for those with corn allergies. "Avoiding certain foods can be a life or death priority". I know someone with an intolerance to corn. His wife struggles to find things that are corn-free. They will be receiving a copy of this book.
A Good Starting Point. .......2006-06-04
This book is a good starting point for anyone with a corn allergy or intolerance. The recipes are very easy, ideal for someone who has never cooked. For those of us who have, some of the recipes may seem un-necessary: soft boiled eggs, Baked Potatoes, Roasted Meats. There are some good recipes though, including one for ketchup. It also has a nice list of corn derived ingredients and places corn may be hidden. My main grievance with the book is that while it explains that white vinegar is made from corn and should be avoided, several of the recipes call for mayonnaise, which contains vinegar! This is a large oversight by the authors. Also be sure to read the back of the book first. There are a few ingredients that it mentions may contain corn that are listed in recipes without a warning to buy corn-free versions (e.g. vanilla). Overall this book is nice to have for some recipe ideas but should not be used as the bible for corn-free cooking.
The Corn-Free Cookbook & Survial Guide is really helpful.......2006-05-15
Corn allergy is very common, but is totally ignored by the establishment. Corn is a cheap commodity and used extensively in our food supply, and many food additives, and even drugs are made from it. Corn is also used in processing and packaging of foods and non-foods. And as a filler in most medicines. It is not labeled as corn, in most cases. Corn is not included in the Big Eight allergy foods that are required to be labeled, so people who are allergic to corn, are on their own. The Corn-Free Cookbook & Survival Guide is very helpful for people who are trying to avoid corn. It is especially helpful for people who are newly diagnosed, or have a child who has been. There is no help for them from the agencies that deal with the Big Eight food allergens, so this book can be a lifesaver for the newly corn allergic. Corn is probably the hardest of all food allergens to avoid, because it is hidden in so many food products, and non-food products. I highly recommend this book. It is well written, with good information, resources, and many good recipes and tips.

Worth the Money.......2003-10-10
There is no doubt that Miller's publications has produced some of the best books covering the study of antiques and they've done it again. The book contains clear color photos plus tips on buying genuine antiques at bargain prices. The "Miller's compares" feature is very informative as are the numerous "additional information" boxes;also provided are actual realized prices for each item. This book does for general antiques what Albert Sack did for antique furniture in his book Fine Points of Furniture and that is to teach the reader to train their "eye". A great book for the beginning or experienced collector.
Book Description
When a tree is felled, the wood is green and is easy to cut, split, shave and shape. As it dries, the wood shrinks and hardensQand it becomes vastly more difficult to work. In the old days, wood-workers relied on the ease with which green wood could be worked to make the parts they needed, and on the way wood shrinks to hold these parts together. These old ways have almost been lost, but are revived here for the modern woodworker. Make a Chair From a Tree is a lively and informative introduction to the old ways of splitting and shaping wood straight from the tree to make a light and beautiful, yet rugged, chair. Author John Alexander presents a complete guide to making this elegantly simple chair. He tells you how to fell a tree, split suitable pieces from it and shape those pieces into the parts of the chair, how to finish it, and how to weave a bark seat. Each step is carefully described and thoroughly illustrated with drawings and photographs. 130 pages. 9" x 9". Soft cover.

All about Lance.......2001-08-05
I'm by far the biggest Lance fan, I have almost every Lance thing you can think of. From books to shirts to pics so when saw this book I had to have it. He is so cute and oh so HOTT! I just could not pass it up. Yes it is small and some of the facts are stuff you already may have heard but with all the cute pictures it was well worth it. I hope you takes this message to heart and do what you want, but if you are as big a Lance fan as me you will love it.
Lance is soooooo hot!.......2000-07-22
I think this book is great. I would buy it for anyone! basically because i am in love with lance! i mean, was he naturallaly born cute or what? everyone will enjoy this book. Although it talks about the same stuff that most nsync fans already know, if you love lance as much as i do, this book will keep you staring at his cute photo's for hours!
Not worth the money.......2000-07-19
Now, I love 'N Sync as much as the next fanatic, but I mustadmit after receiving this book, I felt a little...gipped. It isextremely small, not to mention short. It is filled with pictures we've all seen a million times. The facts and pictures are completly outdated, and the book is smaller then your hand. I suppose that would make it "cute and tiny" but I'd rather spend my 5 bucks plus S&H on something bigger, better, and frankly, worth my money.
The cutest little book about Lance!.......2000-01-25
This little book was really short but it was so cute! It had tons of pictures of Lance in it. There wasn't that much info but it was worth the money. It's one of those books you can read over and over again and not get tired of. I loved it and I highly recommend (especially if you love Lance like I do)!
very cute!.......1999-12-28
I got this book from my friend who knows i'm so in love with lance, and it is so adorable, with cute little facts and pictures, but it was so short, i wish there were more pictures, and also, the facts included, mostly were facts we've all heard a million times before. But it's about lance, and it's a cute little book and it's great to drool over lance and be able to take him with you wherever you go!
