At the beginning of Thane Rosenbaum's imaginative comedy The Golems of Gotham, an elderly pair of Holocaust survivors, Lothar and Rose Levin, commit suicide. Their son, Oliver, a successful New York mystery writer already suffering from his wife's desertion and a crippling case of writer's block, is devastated by the news. Oliver's 14-year-old daughter, Ariel, comes to the rescue, conjuring not only her grandparents from the grave but also a remarkable group of Jewish literary golems (ghosts, in this case) who also killed themselves after a lifetime of Holocaust memories. Among the visitors here to inspire Oliver toward writing a serious second novel are Primo Levi, Jerzy Kosinski, and Paul Celan. While Oliver writes feverishly, the ghosts cleanse New York City of any reminders of oppression toward Jews: tattoos, crew cuts, overcrowded trains, striped uniforms, and smoke belching from tall stacks.

The Golems of Gotham is quick-witted and a lot of fun, but there comes a point at which the reader might reasonably wonder whether this material is going to lead somewhere. It's one thing to drag Levi and the other golems (including Jean Amery, Piotr Rawicz, and Tadeusz Borowski) into a self-serving comedy, but to do so in a story context that invites, but doesn't deliver, contemplation about the relationship between art and memory is wasteful. --Tom Keogh

Book Description

Many years have passed since Oliver Levin -- a bestselling mystery writer and a lifetime sufferer from blocked emotions -- has given any thought to his parents, Holocaust survivors who committed suicide. But now, after years of uninterrupted literary output, Oliver Levin finds himself blocked as a writer, too. Oliver's fourteen-year-old daughter, Ariel, sets out to free her father from his demons by summoning the ghosts of his parents, but, along the way, the ghosts of Primo Levi, Jerzy Kosinski, and Paul Celan, among others, also materialize in this novel of moral philosophy and unforgettable enchantment.

4 out of 5 stars Provides new perspectives on some sobering themes.......2007-06-20

Life has never treated best-selling mystery writer Oliver Levin well. As a child, he was orphaned when his parents committed suicide in a Miami synagogue. After years of marriage, his wife vanished from their Manhattan brownstone without a trace, leaving him to raise his infant daughter alone. Now, even his livelihood is threatened, as he faces an especially pernicious case of writer's block. Although Oliver has always held his emotions in check, they now threaten to overwhelm him, leading him to consider suicide.

Sensing her father's anguish, his now teenage daughter Ariel looks to the Kabala for answers. Always something of a mystic creature (for instance, she's becomes a klezmer violin virtuoso days after first picking up the instrument), she decides she needs to summon the spirits of her grandparents to help her rescue her father from despair. The ritual she performs (a variation on the one Rabbi Judah Loew used to create the fabled Golem of Prague) goes slightly awry, however. In addition to her grandparents, she accidentally summons a group of six additional ghosts, all spirits of Holocaust survivors who committed suicide, all writers who grappled with the enormity of that event through their art (their number includes Primo Levi, Jerzy Kosinski, Paul Celan, Jean Amery, Piotr Rawicz, and Tadeusz Borowski). Even as they assist Ariel in her quest, the ghosts use their unearthly power to remake Manhattan so that nothing remains to remind them of the Holocaust (e.g. removing tattoos, eliminating crowded train cars and smokestacks, etc.). Doing so, they create chaos.

Using the Holocaust as a dark touchstone, Rosenbaum has crafted a seriocomic reflection on the persistence of memory and the struggle to find meaning in the wake of tragedy, examining the paradox which arises when one seeks to honor the past but at the same time embrace the present and the future, a theme especially resonant in this post 9/11 world. Rosenbaum laments the fact that as successive generations supplant their elders, time tends to mute the horrors of the past, simply because the events are less immediate. Over time, even something as horrendous as the Holocaust begins to fade from everyday consciousness.

A strange hybrid of light-hearted farce and serious reprimand, this work at once celebrates and condemns the human capacity and need to move forward. Charming and oft times laugh out loud funny, The Golems of Gotham is by turn serious and reflective. In the end, Rosenbaum successfully reconciles both impulses, delivering a novel that is as entertaining as it is sobering, one that provides new perspective on familiar themes.

5 out of 5 stars Dealing with grief and loss.......2005-03-30

This book is about Oliver, son of two Holocaust survivors who made him an orphan by taking their own lives while he was in college. Equally devastating to Oliver was the fact that his wife deserted him and their two year old daughter, Ariel. It is also about Ariel, now a teenager, who has become the emotional caretaker in their family of two out of necessity, because Oliver is too waterlogged with grief and loss that he has kept buried all these years. Ariel, through kabbalism, brings back Holocaust writers as ghosts, along with ghosts of Oliver's parents, to save her father. The Holocaust itself is a character here - actually, the best developed character. The story itself is amusing, if not laugh-out-loud funny, but it is told in loosely connected segments, divided by segments that delve into the realm of philosophy. I would not recommend this story as a great read if all you want is amusement.

The thing that makes this book so fantastic is the intimate and literary way in which Rosenbaum explores grief and loss. Rosenbaum is specifically examining the particular loss experienced by Holocaust survivors and their children, but the grief and loss he actually evokes is more generic. Rosenbaum's work illuminates the bleak emotional state that is the product of experiencing alienation from family and the near inability of the self to face that kind of rejection. Ariel not only saves her father in these pages, she also saves the readers who suffer from alienation for an infinite variety of reasons. The reader first experiences Oliver's pain, and then his transformation vicariously. On closing the book after reading the last page, this reader felt lighter and more hopeful about a lifetime of alienation than she ever would have beliefed possible. Rosenbaum has contributed mightily to the world's literature in ways that he himself, perhaps, didn't even realize, as he pursued his quest to make sure that the world does not forget the ultimate horror of the Holocaust.

This may be one of the best novels I have ever read. It is amazing to me. I find myself responding on many levels...
a mirror of realities I have never articulated but felt deeply.
Thanks.

2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2004-06-22

I bought this book in the interest of getting a sense of the work of some of the writers that Rosenbaum includes in his cast; I finished GOLEMS hoping that the rambling would led to a satisfying end. Neither of these ideas panned out. Reading Andrine's review, I was so relieved to read that someone agreed that book just didn't do anything interesting with its material.

Also, based on the little research I've done on the topic and the other, better books I've read that include them, Rosenbaum's golems aren't even golems. What's going on with that? A much better book that includes the concept and some satisfying background information on its history is Marge Piercy's Body of Glass (published in the States as He, She, and It).

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Dismal Writing.......2003-11-22

Although the premise of the story is a good one, the way it is handled literarily fell very short of expectations. I kept wondering whether his editor was on vacation for allowing the contant ranting and philosophical tangents, leaving absent the "showing" that might have been more appropriate to a novel. The story had interesting ideas to explore regarding holocaust victims and their children, but doesn't bring any light to the ideas, just a overblown ghost story which doesn't deal with the concept of "golem" at all and instead virtually slanders a generation of disturbed writers, despite the apology at the outset of the novel. I finished it only because I had assigned it for my book group and was embarassed to have done so. Steer clear.

1 out of 5 stars Tired of Texas.......2006-12-21

How many times can one author refer to the state of TX in one book? At many places throughout, you cannot go even a whole page without seeing the word. It's used so much, it just got to be silly. And the story isn't all that great. Like the other reviewer said, you don't really care what happens to the characters. It's not often that I start a book and not finish it, and this was one of them.

    1 out of 5 stars To Tease A Texan.......2006-07-24

There was no substance to this book. And how many times does the author think she has to beat the reader over the head with comments like, "I am a Texan", or "Damn that Texan"? I got the fact that the main characters are both from Texas after it was mentioned ten or twelve times within the first twenty pages. I could not even finish this one. There was nothing in it to make me care about what happened to the characters.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I had hoped............2006-04-10

I really wasn't all that impressed with this book. The heroine, upon learning that her groom isn't who she thought he was, turns self-righteous and indignant and kicks him out of the bedroom. Never mind that she did the same thing to him and passed herself off as someone else. Then after weeks of being denied what every husband wants, she gets jealous when she thinks that he's getting it elsewhere. Then towards the end just out of the clear blue she decides that sex is now ok. Give me a break!! The only real and honest character in this book was the adorable and mischevious donkey. Personally I like my heroines with a little bit more substance and backbone. And I HATE women who make their men beg for it. This was not the worst book that I have ever read, but it certainly wasn't the best either.

4 out of 5 stars lighthearted western romance .......2006-03-04

In 1890 in Buck Shot, Oklahoma Territory Lark Van Schuyler is used to caring for herself ever since she ran away from home in search of her twin Lacey. However, the niece of a wealthy rancher, she normally avoids getting involved with other people's foolishness, but feels sorry for the drunken cowhand being cheated at cards by Snake in the Last Chance Saloon. She intercedes, but loses her job.

Snake persuades Laredo Hudson to case out the bank. The next he knows he is involved in a hold-up, but he and Snake separate and he escapes thanks to Lark. He reaches the rendezvous point, but only Snake's girl is there. He leaves the part of the loot he took from the bank with the girl and leaves for Texas with Lark, unaware that Snake is coming after him for he thinks Laredo has his half the loot with him.

TO TEASE A TEXAN is a lighthearted western romance starring a delightful courageous heroine and a seemingly pathetic cowboy who makes Pauline seem perilous. The action-packed story line is fun to follow as Laredo seems to land in one problem situation after another with Lark's rescue efforts making matters worse. Sub-genre fans will enjoy this intriguing glimpse at the lawless late nineteenth century "Whiskey Towns" while Lark and Laredo fall in love over a series of capers.

3 out of 5 stars DS9 Centering on Quark and Rom .......2007-09-08

This is my first Deep Space Nine novel. My son and I got into the series (which I totally missed in first run because of living in Taiwan) and I promised not to watch any episodes without him. To fill the gap, I thought why not try a book. The 34th rule of acquisition is War is Good for Business (keep in mind the 35th rule is Peace is Good for Business). In general DS9 does a lot that ST can't do, and the core of that difference is the many different people and cultures that are central to the station. This book centers are Quark and his brother Rom who seem to be caught up in some plan of the Grand Nagus. Too many threads are spun out and not enough detail is flushed out in the end. That is kind of the weakness of DS9 in general though.

4 out of 5 stars Can Quark prevent a war ?.......2004-12-12

I'm not a huge fan of David R. George III (his first fire & ice book was really great but i lost interest somewhere halfway throug book 3), but he's really good in plotting, thinking out long-running scemes and strategies. And since it was just the one book, I thought he could not make it sooo difficult with plots, sub-plots, sub-sub-plots,... that I con't follow. I was mostly right. The story is complicated (or maybe it's just me, I'm nog a big scemer myself), and some parts of it are still unclear to me, but I liked it. It's a page-turner, allthough you know the big lines of how it's going to end (all the main characters still played in seizons to come), it keeps you wowndering, wanting to finish it in one haul (wich was not doable for me, I don't have that much free time).
Armin Shimmerman (the actor who plays Quark), gives the book an extra dimention, because he KNOWS Quark, he's been playing him for years, he knows how the character works, what he can and won't do...
But it's not just about Quark. It also deals with the other main characters, like Rom, Sisko, Odo and Kira and raises some racial issues: does Sisko see Quark as Quark or as just another Ferengi, whith all the prejudices that come with that term ?

      5 out of 5 stars intriguing.......2003-10-04

This book would make an excellent espionage/thriller. In many ways, the plot reminds me of something Frederick Forsyth would write. Perhaps the authors may have read some books by him. The twists and surprising revelations at the end of this novel would satisfy any fan of intrigue and espionage. I honesty had no idea what was going to happen from chapter to chapter.

A highly valued religious artifact (the 9th orb of the prophets) which originated on the planet Bajor gets into the hands of the head of the Faringi Alliance (grand Negus Zek). Bajor then asks for it back since it belongs to them and Negus purchased it on the black market. Negus then places the item in an auction. Unsatisfied with the amount Bejor would be willing to pay for the orb, Negus bars them from the auction. This angers the head of Bejor (Shakaar) and causes friction between Faringis and Bejorans. The Bejorans and Faringis then start to trade blows with one another. Relations between the Faringi and Bejorans get worse and it affects Quark's relations with Kira as well as with others on DS9.

Quark plays a significant role in this story because he knows Negus Zek very well. Rom, Quark's brother also plays a significant part. In watching DS9, I remember Rom as a very simple-minded Faringi but this story shows a different side of him. Rom's character in this book is very consistent with the way I remember him on the TV show, but he is portrayed as a very courageous individual who has intelligent things to say. Also, this is the first time I've witnessed anger from Rom.

5 out of 5 stars Who doesn't love the Ferengi?.......2003-05-26

I love this story it is one the best Deep Space Nine books ever written. The Ferengi are my most favorite race in the entire star trek universe who else could stab you in the back(in a business deal) and make you laugh at the same time. This book has both a good plot and plently of humor in typical Quark fashion.

      4 out of 5 stars The Ferengi's soft side.......2003-05-20

We all know ferengi in ST are meant to be despised.
This presents them in a new light and brings out the best of them.
The brilliance of Grand Nagus is kept a suspense until the end and even regular readers are kept in dark.
The 34th rule which "Peace/War is good for business" is enacted out in the most glorious way.
A good, emotional read if one wants a non-funny look at Ferengi.
My respect for Ferengi and Quark grew by leaps after reading this.

                  4 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Christianity.......2005-04-22

West's books is an eye-opening account of racism since modernity and a proposed response. He begins with an account of modernity and proceeds to an insightful genealogy of racism. Racism, he claims, comes from a combination of an emphasis on science, Cartesian philosophy, and Greek thought and aesthetics. West then turns attention to four common African American responses to the problem, highlighting humanism as the preferable option. Finally, West spends 2 chapters arguing for a combination of Christian and Marxist perspectives for a revolutionary Christianity.

There is no doubt that West is brilliant, articulate, and passionate. His diagnosis of the problems of racism and modernity are indespensible. The reason the book only receives 4 stars is that I am not sure Marxism is the correct choice for Christians. Without a doubt, Marxist thought provides insights Christians need. However, it seems to me that another political system will bring about more problems. I suggest that the church itself is political, so Christians need not seek out another source of more effective political thought. The church, when it functions as it ought, is all that is needed to reform society.

I read this book for the first time as a young graduate student! It was one of the most exciting books I had read at the time. It's fine combination of intellectual insight and grounding in the best of the prophetic Christian tradition did more to help shape my religious imagination than many other books I have read before or since.

                    Book Description

The Mediterranean diet has long been recognized as one of the healthiest diets in the world. An ancient cuisine based on our modern food pyramid, with breads and grains and vegetables at the base, Mediterranean recipes focus on the freshest ingredients. The Classic Mediterranean Cookbook is an illustrated guide to the cuisine of the entire Mediterranean, celebrating the flavors of Egypt, Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Tunisia, Turkey, and Morocco. Like all DK Classic cookbooks, key preparation techniques are demonstrated in step-by-step photographs.

Mediterranean expert and author, Sarah Woodward, organizes the book into helpful sections. She begins with the ingredients--produce, meats, cheeses, herbs and spices--in a vibrant full-color guide with advice on choosing, preparing, and storing. She then shares 20 classic recipes, the perfect introduction to Mediterranean cuisine, from gazpacho to tsatsiki to paella, each illustrated with a high-quality, full-color photograph. The heart of the cookbook is devoted to more distinctive recipes, covering more than 120 dishes with clear, non-intimidating instructions, techniques, and an instructional nutritional chart that lists each recipe's calories, fat, and sodium levels.

Easy to follow recipies for a variety of mediterranean meals, great for beginners, and with wonderful flavors. Many of the dishes have flavors and combinations that are very different from standard American and non-Mediterranean fare, but most people will adapt easily and enjoy the difference. All recipies include full color pictures, with pictures of all ingredients also. Most ingredients are simple and available in common grocery stores. Best of all, we had little trouble reproducing the look and flavors of the recipies as they were pictured and described in the book. It's one of the few cookbooks that produces results as good as they lead you to expect.

                            Book Description

Country Living editor Niña Williams had never visited Provence, yet visions of that fabled French region permeated her dreams. And so, with a little help from some talented artists, she transformed her own simple Denver home (inside and out) into a small bit of Provençal heaven. Everywhere trompe l'oeil murals turn the walls into a storybook peopled with imaginary characters and landscapes from a tiny imaginary Provençal village. And each detail, from the ceramic dishes to the small soaps in the bathroom to the wrought iron furniture on the patio, has the perfect Provençal touch. Williams herself explains her inspiration, and the reasons behind all her choices. A pure delight and true original, this blend of romance and design primer also includes tasty tidbits like Provençal recipes (Garlic Rabbit) and information on the Provençal crafts of lacemaking, enamelware, and more.

                            5 out of 5 stars a decorative fairy tale............2002-01-22

As stated in the book's introduction, the decoration of this
house does indeed capture the mood, spirit and colors of
Provence. Anyone looking for ideas or studies of trompe l'oeil
will totally enjoy the art on every page. I remember the
first time I saw the art of Fisher and Chappell in an old issue
of Country Living magazine. They artfully painted a garden
shed and it made the cover of the magazine. A story unfolds
as you go room to room in this house, the walls are the illustrations. French tiles, a mouse on garden tools, rabbits
in a hutch, windows to lavender fields, murals of glorious
Provencal landscapes, a broken plate on the floor, pearls on the stair steps, rose petals on a window sill: are they
real or painted? An excellent addition to a collection of
interior design books. You can't go wrong here. The resource
guide in the back features decorative sources, fabric and upholstery sources, garden catalogs and graphic designers.
Lots of garden pictures too as Nina Williams was the founding
editor of Country Living Gardener. From the kitchen to the
atelier, the boudoir to the foyer you will find inspiration!
                            Thumbs up!

This book, although not practical, is lovely and dreamy. Great for thumbing through on a weekend afternoon. The author has tapped into my psyche by fueling my dream of having a getaway cottage. We want a dreamy place not in Europe but close enough to home so that we can escape every weekend if we want to. Fortunately, that is possible in our part of the country where vacation homes are common. I've searched for vacation homes and cottage books, and the best are:
SECOND HOME. Rating: 10. This gorgeous coffee table book is also practical. Great houses, dreamy photos of locations, but the homes, which are in all styles from cabins in the woods to big family homes on the Atlantic, aren't out of reach. The book has tips on finding a location and that sort of thing as well as decorating. Nice resource list with internet sites for more information. Blends dreamy beauty with information.

5 out of 5 stars HOME DECOR. WITH A STORY TO TELL.......2001-12-13

I can't finish this book. It's so good,
I want to leave some for other days.
                            The decor is fasinating.

5 out of 5 stars Cottage Art at its best.......2001-10-31

Nina Williams has created a gift for those of us who are artists who like to make our homes or in my case my cottage a day to day living canvas. Not only did I appreciate the "theme" which is basically a young girl flowing into adulthood but like Ms Williams I have a serious free spirit mode that is very Bohemian.

The photos are wonderful and one sees how an artist creates beauty that is a mix of fairytale and reality. And I am also a grower of French lavender and could almost smell the lavender tucked in the curtain or in the mural of the French lavender fields that seemed to stretch for miles.

And the whimsy of the strand of pearls broken and dropping down the painted stairs of her home, the mouse on the stairs the looks so lifelike and the flowers...oh my they look so real, as if freshly picked. And the young girl at the window, caught in a far off thought with love letter in hand.

And the colours and hue are so vibrant and I so love the way the artists creates smiles on peoples faces. How you open a door and see a painting on the other side. How rooms blend paintings with tile work and furniture.

This is a book I would recommend for all my fellow artist friends who love creating and are not afraid of working on non canvas surfaces.

Owning a residence in Provence, We werelooking for inspiration for a redesign. This will be my bible. She perfectly captured the mood and colors of Provence. The Trompe L' Oeil work is some of the finest I have ever seen. It weaves the tri-themes of the book together perfectly. Personality makes a room.

The many photos and ideas in the book are fabulous - anyone who is a cottage decor freak will be transported. My only issue was the drivelling narrative by the author - but don't let it stop you; just plan to skim most of it unless you have insomnia.

5 out of 5 stars They say you can't judge a Book by it's Cover, but I did........2004-05-16

I knew from the cover this would be a book to indulge
my senses. The small house pictured with a white couch,
with a black embrodiered pillow, centered in the middle
along with a vintage candolier drew me in.

Every page has a treat for the eyes.White panelled
walls, stone walls, and small white beadboard in the
bathroom's.A beautiful blue fabric couch centered in
an old-fashioned three window setting.Simple but
                            elegant.

It shows some new cottage rooms, some a combination:
Vintage with new,and some with more vintage style.
There is a smorgasbord for every type of decorating,
and true appeal for every age group. Some very talented
designers left their mark in the rooms.

I keep going back to this book for ideas and just
                            pleasure.It helps me to relax.

Some fascinating finds were the gothic arches for
book storing. Also, the crisp white porches with pillars,
that seem to be making a comeback.Hoorah!
Their were multiple bathroom choices allowing you
                            a different vision.

The flea market style in this book was above what is
usually associated with the words flea market.
It is used successfully because the objects found have such
                            potential.

At the end,are shown easy displays to copy if you
are starting out,and don't quite know what to do to
                            achieve a personal look.

                            Book Description

This lively and authoritative book explores the influence of the Bauhaus and modernism on typography and book design. Distinguished book designer and author Alan Bartram examines work by such key figures as Max Bill, F. T. Marinetti, El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy, Jan Tschichold, and Paul Rand. All of the carefully chosen examples-some of which have not been previously reproduced-clearly demonstrate the modernist revolution that took place in graphic design. In an informative introductory essay, Bartram surveys the German art and design school known as the Bauhaus. Under Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus intended to create an academic, theoretical, and practical synthesis of all forms of visual expression-a marrying of art, architecture, industry, and design that had never been attempted before. Although the Bauhaus existed for only fourteen years, from 1920 to 1934, Bartram asserts that its philosophy influenced the appearance of almost every kind of modernist artifact throughout the twentieth century and continues to do so today. Engagingly written and handsomely illustrated, this volume is a valuable resource for designers and book lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars New and Fresh Look at an Immortal..........2005-12-16

This book, and SHAKESPEARE OF LONDON by Marchette Chute, are the only works known to me on Shakespeare that emphasize his work as an actor-director. Once one is reminded that Shakespeare was one of the leading actors in the various companies in which he worked and for whom he wrote, much of his life and career arc make far better sense than they do in the usual biographies that concentrate exclusively on his writing, as if he sat every night in a rented room and generated page after page with no actors or theater in mind. It also supplies a very different picture of how the members of any given successful group of players spent the year, particularly in its demonstration that even players with a dedicated, available playhouse in London still necessarily spent a good part of each year on tour.

Any discussion of the details of any part of Shakespeare's life is necessarily 99% speculation and 1% ambiguous documentation. However, Southworth's guesses as to the roles taken or preferred by Shakespeare in his own plays are soundly based on Southworth's lifelong experience as an actor in many performances of most of the Bard's plays, and generally made sense to me. It would be fascinating to get some clearer idea of the roles he took in the plays of Jonson and Marlowe, and Southworth does make some guesses, at least for the Marlowe plays that had the most obvious influence on Shakespeare's own earliest plays.

Southworth pictures Shakespeare as a whole-hearted "man of the theater" from well before his hasty marriage until just a few weeks before his untimely death in his early 50s. It's a picture that is consistent with what we know about the Elizabethan and Jacobian theater, and which remains consistent with the few documents that place Shakespeare at any given spot at any given time, doing any specific thing.

                                In short, it's a highly-recommended eye-opener.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Non-Academic Perspective.......2002-02-01

As an academic, I could resent the sometimes acerbic references to academics in John Southworth's Shakespeare the Player, but as an academic I learned more from this non-academic book than I have learned from many academic books on Shakeespeare. The book is written by aprofessional theater person, an actor/director, who has a thorough knowledge of Shakespeare's plays and of the interactions among casts and playwrights and stages and plays and performances. From this background, he proposes and credibly supports four lines of argument: a) that there cannot be any lost years in Shakespeare's biography: to do what he did, Shakespeare had to have had an extensive apprenticeship in the theater, and Southworth adds evidence in support of the theory that this was Leceister's company; b) that there is no credible evidence that Shakespeare ever retired from the theater, and much circumstantial evidence from theater lives to suggest that he did no such thing; c) that Shakespeare was primarily an actor/director in his own plays, and not primarily a playwright, in his own eyes and the eyes of his colleagues; and d) that the roles he chose for himself, roles like Iago in "Othello," were characterized by being somewhat detached from the action, frequency of appearance on stage even when not speaking, and often a kind of controlling relationship with the other characters. The style is clear, unpretentions and very readable, the presentation direct, knowledgeable and carefully argued with detailed and credible evidence. I found the book to be the most helpful single book in illuminating Shakespeare and his plays that I've read in the last ten years.
