Presenting some of Chambers' best from a range of sources.......2005-04-07
Robert Chamber's title story became one of the most important works in American supernatural fiction since those of Poe, representing one of the first attempts to establish the horror of the names: this reprints all the supernatural stories from THE KING IN YELLOW, presenting some of Chambers' best from a range of sources. A highly recommended pick for fans of horror and the supernatural.
A Must-Have for Lovecraft fans.......2004-12-25
HP Lovecraft was heavily inspired by Chambers' wierd tales from _The King in Yellow_. (He stole the name and vague concept of Hastur from it.) The frustrating thing about RW Chambers is that he COULD write very well, but for some reason he usually didn't. At his best he could weave an atmosphere of terrifying hallucinatory brilliance. At his worst he was hokey, sentimental, sappy, and tiresome. Half of his original _The King in Yellow_ consists of dopey romance stories that will infuriate the wierd fiction fan. Not so here. This Dover collection has only the best tales from _The King in Yellow_, as well as a number of other chilling morsels picked from Chambers' large body of later (mostly forgettable) work.
You should get hold of this collection just for "The Repairer of Reputations," which ranks as a superior masterpiece of surreal paranoid delirium. It's one of the top 5 wierd stories of all time, and actually BETTER than anything by Lovecraft.
Classic Short Horror Fiction.......2003-10-10
An excellent collection by a lesser-known writer of short
horror fiction, this volume contains one of my all-time favorite short stories in any genre, "The Harbor-Master."

Outstanding...........2006-03-10
Gideon was truly a magnificant man. He could be Alan Shore, of the TV show "Boston Legal" played by James Spader, reincarnated!! They are so much alike! This book was extremely interesting from the get go, not a boring moment anywhere. I loved Sophie, too. Not only was she lovely, she was smart. I didn't care for the drastic turn the story took-although it seemed in line with Gideon's attempt at reform, it seemed to come out of nowhere and suddenly everything changed and there was much heartache. I'm of the opinion that if these people would have just spoken plainly, they would have ALL been much happier.
2.5 stars.......2005-09-19
Lady May has spent quite some time finding her illegitimate nieces and setting them up in society. Her latest find, Sophie, has as many secrets as May herself, or more. Sophie is not a lost heiress, but a woman desperately trying to avoid being a courtesan. Faking her way into society seems like her best option. Then, May's late husband's nephew, Gideon, comes on the scene and turns Sophie's world on its ear. Does she dare continue her masquerade and does she dare not?
** Multiple plots interweave in this detailed novel. Fans of the series will both rejoice and mourn as it concludes. **

Prefer the 1st book.......2005-09-11
It's an interesting idea: an earl dies and leaves behind a journal which details a number of children he's had out of wedlock, and his sister decides that the children need to be looked after.
The Beauty of Bond Street is the third book in the series on the Mayfair brides, and the first I read of the Mayfair Brides series. Navin started with the story of Michaela in The Princess of Park Lane, and continues with Trista in the Heiress of Hyde Park; I'm reading Princess right now, and it looks to be a better story than Beauty.
The plot is flawless in this book. You have the heroine, Sophie Temple, the daughter of a courtesan, who decides to impersonate the daughter of another courtesan so that she can claim that dead child's inheritance as one of the Earl of Woolrich's natural daughters. She wants to have a season, meet someone rich and titled, and become respectable.
While staying at her 'Aunt May''s house, Sophie meets Lord Gideon Ashford, her patroness' brother-in-law and a rake, and sparks fly. At the same time she is pursued by Lord Oliver Burton, which her friend Margaux is hopelessly in love with. Thinking that she can't lust after her best friend's husband-to-be, Margaux cultivates the friendship of Lord Farnsworth instead. As luck would have it, Farnsworth just happens to be Ashford's friend and also the one person who knows Sophie is not who she says she is..
The story starts quite slowly with Sophie getting to know the injured Ashford better. At every turn Navin makes sure to remind the reader that she's feeling guilty of being found out, so much so that I found it tiresome.
I felt the conversation uninspiring as well - nothing seemed quite real among the characters, at least until the last third of the book. Among other things, Ashford ends up offering for Margaux because he is caught with her in his arms after rescuing her from Farnsworth, Sophie confesses, finds her true love, and all is revealed.
There are still gems, as when Ashford persuades Margaux's mother to invite him to her home, but the pacing of the plot could have been better, as could the dialogue. Navin is definitely capable of better, as I've seen in Princess.
These books should be read in sequence, as May's story slowly unfolds across each book. I did find some things completely unbelievable though - it's possible to introduce one or two natural children into the ton, but surely not so many? And such natural children would unlikely have been considered 'good ton' - it doesn't seem likely that society would have accepted a peer marrying Sophie. Then again, romances are escapist, so what's a little more fantasy.
Third in trilogy by Jacqueline Navin.......2005-08-08
THE BEAUTY OF BOND STREET by Jacqueline Navin
August 7, 2005
Rating: 4/5 stars
THE BEAUTY OF BOND STREET by Jacqueline Navin centers on a young woman who poses as someone else in order to survive. Sophie Temple has nowhere to live after the death of her aunts, and decides to replace Sophie Kent who is a missing heiress, an illegitimate child of Aunt Millicent. After she presents herself to her new family, Sophie is invited into the home of Lady May, while Sophie lives with the guilt of having deceived this very hospitable woman and her family.
In the mean time, Lady May's handsome brother-in-law, Gideon, is recovering from a shooting accident which occurred during a duel. He is laid up at Lady May's home and Sophie decides she wants to get to know him, a man with a reputation of being a rogue. Secretly, the two forge a friendship, and unfortunately fall in love, realizing that this can never result in anything more than a flirtation. Sophie is to be presented to the ton and Gideon is deemed not suitable for marriage to someone like her, a woman of wealth and honor. Little does Gideon and Lady May know, that Sophie is not who she appears to be.
A subplot has Lady May dealing with her own romantic troubles. She loves Lord Marcus Roberts, but she is not quite ready to marry again, although her husband has been dead for many years. Lady May has a secret that she is afraid to reveal, for it will affect the family as well as herself.
THE BEAUTY OF BOND STREET kept this reader interested, especially because of the amusing characters that filled this book. But Sophie stood out as a character that the reader will empathize with, and will wish that she does find the peace of mind and the respectability that she craves. She was a woman that was born on the wrong side of the tracks, a daughter of an actress. She wanted respectability as well as comfort, and knew that her only way out was to marry a man that could bring her all this. Gideon was a man that enjoyed living the life of the rogue, a man that in the past had no qualms with having affairs with other men's wives. When the two meet, you know that both will find their lives will change for the better. But how does Sophie find a way to get rid of all her other suitors, so she can be free to marry Gideon? The reader will want to root for her. I am giving this book 4/5 stars.
no complaints.......2005-07-20
The Beauty of Bond Street is the third in this series of historicals about a woman, Lady May, finding her late brother's illegitimate children and launching them into society (&, incidentally, finding them spouses).
The best thing about The Beauty of Bond Street, for me at least, was the emotional development, which really rang true. All three main characters (Sophie, Gideon, and Lady May) have deep emotional wounds, and those are explored fully, without either lapsing into melodrama or sidestepping difficult issues. The more Sophie falls in love with Gideon, the more her secret weighs on her, yet the harder it is for her to tell him because his regard is so important to her. And the same goes for Gideon and Lady May. And the ending.... Heart-wrenching and satisfying.
In addition to the romance between Sophie and Gideon, there are two secondary romances, which are like icing on an already scrumptious cake.
The cover, as well, is very appropriate: The mask, hiding the characters' secrets.
Seems I can't find anything to complain about at all.

Nice introspective book.......2006-06-20
This book is more than just a sci-fi novel. It is more of a philosophical look at life, faith, and god in the context of the world of physics. The book is a page turner as you are always wondering what is going to happen next with the green taxi cab. Of course like every good book there is a subplot to set it up for a sequel novel.
Overall, the book is an easy read. I read it on a 3 hour plane flight with no problem. If you enjoy some of the theories of physics dealing with multidimensions, string theory and subatomic particles AND a great story about a man questioning his role in the grand scheme of things, this book is for you. It is a book that will stimulate your mind on a variety of interesting topics.
Awesome book.......2006-03-25
This book is incredible - a real page turner. I especially like that grad student - he was a good character. This thing really blew my mind at times. It is very fascinating, and all the science stuff is true, too. I highly reccomend it to anyone.

La Cachette, Meteigner's restaurant, is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. I am a big fan of French cuisine but often find it too rich to eat every day and too time intensive to cook often. The nouvelle French recipes in this book are intense without being overly rich. Also, most competent cooks can handle these recipes in the home kitchen. For wonderful and fancy traditional French check out The French Laundry Cookbook.

The most user-friendly glass book ever written!!!!.......1999-05-21
Finally, a glass book where you don't have to guess what the picture is!!!! Each illustration has a caption, telling what the item is, along with the vital statistics. No more flipping from page to page to find out what it is, or worse yet, a picture full of glass and no list or caption. The illustrations are incredible. Not only has the author researched his subject thoroughly, the photography will dazzle you. Thank you Philip Hopper for one of the best depression glass books I've seen yet!!!! I sincerely hope you will write more of these high quality glassware books!!
Book Description
Ruby Lal explores domestic life and the place of women in the Mughal court of the sixteenth century. Challenging traditional, orientalist interpretations of the haram that have portrayed a domestic world of seclusion and sexual exploitation, she reveals a complex society where noble men and women negotiated their everyday life and public-political affairs. Combining Ottoman and Safavid histories, she demonstrates the richness as well as ambiguity of the Mughal haram, which was pivotal in the transition to institutionalization and imperial excellence.

Book Description
"They're after the Rose!" That's what the frightened woman said hours before her body was pulled from the local fish hatchery. Could a clue to the bejeweled foreigner's death be found in the puzzling note she left behind, sealed with the emblem of a rose? Rinnah Two Feathers and her friends Tommy Red Hawk and Meagen Paige are spending their summer vacation in Spearfish Canyon investigating.
Ben Forrest, promising movie star turned construction worker, is Rinnah's prime suspect. Her curiosity about his fall from grace is further piqued when she uncovers a copy of his award-winning documentary on the Royals of Varna. She's fascinated by the Bulgarian story of greed, corruption, and murder. But it's the missing royal ruby that has the kids playing detective; the unique stone is rumored to be the largest in existence, its value priceless. And it's carved in the shape of a rose!
There's also Tina Treadwell, the young art school graduate Mrs. Lane hired to help run her gallery. When a bouquet of roses is delivered to the "delightful girl," she immediately throws them away. Rinnah suspects that the flowers were a message, but about what? And from whom? Tina's suspicious behavior at the local coffeehouse leads Rinnah and her friends to believe that her mysterious boyfriend may be none other than Ben Forrest. What are those two up to?
To make matters worse, Meagen finds out that her dad is dating again! Sandy Price, hospital administrator for Spearfish General, is taking up more than a little of Meagen's quality dad-time. It's all Rinnah can do to keep Meagen from a major melt down. When Meagen demands a background check on the new lady in her dad's life, the two girls uncover the woman's shocking ties to Varna.
Perhaps the most unusual thing of all is what the medicine man knows. Ronnie Black Elk is the tribe's spiritual advisor and comes from a long line of Lakota medicine men. Why did he put rose petals in Rinnah's medicine bag? What tribal secret is he keeping, and why? And what does it have to do with the mysterious woman's murder?
With each answer Rinnah uncovers, she comes closer and closer to the truth behind The Curse of the Royal Ruby.

Impressive Second Book in a Fun Kid's Series.......2002-12-18
Rinnah Two Feathers is looking forward to her summer vacation. She and her two best friends, Tommy Red Hawk and Meagen Paige, are staying in a cabin in Spearfish Canyon as guests of Meagen's dad. But on the first day, Rinnah is handed a note from a nervous, mysterious woman who says "They're after the rose," before taking off again. Then the woman is found face down in a pond. The note is confusing, but the trio is determined to discover what it means. With every clue they piece together, they discover they're in more danger. Meanwhile, Meagen is having a hard time adjusting to the new woman in her dad's life. This summer is shaping up to be anything but restful.
This is the second in a new mystery series for kids. I'd enjoyed the first, and this one didn't disappoint me in the least. The characters are real kids with strengths and weaknesses. The plot left me confused until the end. Mr. Johnson skillfully weaves sub-plots into the story and pulls off several tense, atmospheric scenes. I was turning the pages quickly for the last 50, trying to find out what would happen next.
Kids ready to move on from the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew will love this new series featuring great characters, plot, and writing. My only complaint? The third one isn't out yet!

Product Description
The Inside of the DJ reads:
"When attractiveMerion Bennett left London for a job as governess in a small coastal town in the North of England, she was embarking on more than one adventure. She was running away from personal tragedy, seeking forgetfulness in work; and she was heading into an unknown life where war would come closer to her than it ever had in London. On the long train trip north she made her first acquaintance with two men whose destination was the same as her own. One was George Northcote, an officer in the Royal Navy; the other an unplesant, lonely-looking man who chose to remain a mysterious stranger and who filled Merion with apprehension she couldn't explain. Both of these men were to play signifigant parts in her life in the months to come, and both were to be importantly concerned with her happiness.
This is not a war novel; but a background of war heightens its suspense and makes it one of Ruby Ayres' most poignant romances."

Book Description
The 'On Affections' by the Stoic philosopher Chrysippus (c. 280-205 BCE) contains the classic exposition of the Stoic theory of the emotions. This book provides a fresh discussion of the extant evidence, i.e. the fragments and testimonies preserved by later sources. It aims to establish the exact amount of available evidence and to arrange the fragmentary material so as to see how far the original treatise can be reconstructed. The fragments are interpreted both in their literary context and in the light of Stoic doctrines known from other sources. Given its contextual approach, this study includes extensive discussion of the methods of sources such as Galen, Posidonius and Cicero. In addition, the medical backdrop to Chrysippus' theory receives considerable attention.

Expected a "Reference Guide", Got a Picture-Book........2001-12-21
I don't know where to begin except to ask what the jacket description has to do with the book?
I was excited about reading this "must-have reference guide" that "focuses on the essential elements that create a successful online portfolio." I expected to see samples of some of the best award-wining online portfolios along with discussions of the salient features that make them so successful and the means by which they were achieved.
I hoped for some descriptions or tips on how winning portfolio designers select and organize content, what types of interfaces and technologies they choose to present their work, how they translate that into success in their fields of work,...
What I got was a (bad) coffee-table book full of screen-shots of web portfolios with little snippets of hyperbole in accompanying blurb-boxes on every other page for the first 2/3 of the book. I never saw such a content-free "reference guide" in my life. Between pages 112 and 154 there is NO TEXT other than 2-word captions to thumbnail-sized website screenshots which are, frankly, a waste of the high-quality glossy stock on which they are printed. They are too small to make out any of the supposed "ooh and ahh" details. Worst of all, what little text there was to read was poorly written - rife with grammatical errors.
This book was an incredible disappointment, very ill-conceived, and falsely advertised. Would someone like to buy my copy?
Terrific Visual Guide.......2001-11-21
Full of ideas and colorful layouts that help you navigate visually through the maze of creating a website. Great reference tool for showing how designers present their work.
Bad purchase.......2001-11-16
This book has no content. You can barely read a bit about the websites featured there, and most of them are outdated. Although the book is published in 2001, websites there seem to be old.
I didn't agree with the choices of the websites this book features either. It seems like it has been put together by someone who really doesn't spend that much time on the Internet.

Book Description
The memoir of the late Lita Grey Chaplin (1908-1995), the only one of Chaplin's wives to have written an account of life with Chaplin. Her memoir is an extraordinary Hollywood story of someone who was there from the very beginning.
Customer Reviews:
Sad story, but..........2006-02-09
A few years before her death, Lita Grey, second wife of master comedian Charlie Chaplin, began writing her second "autobiography," WIFE OF LIFE OF THE PARTY, together with acknowledged co-writer Jeffrey Vance.
It is a sad story. I am the greatest Chaplin-fan on the planet -- I have seen all but one of his 81 films (the exception is the Keystone-short HER FRIEND THE BANDIT, which is presumed lost), I have read dozens of books and seen just as many documentaries, and I have been incredibly inspired by his work. He is without doubt the greatest genius in movie history.
Despite this, I have to admit that I really feel sorry for Lita. Like all of us, Chaplin had his faults as a human being, and in his younger years his treatment of women was one of them. This has nothing to do with that he was cruel or a pervert, as some people claim -- he was neither. But he was simply so busy with his work, and had a too wild background (he was raised in London's poorest quarters, his alcoholic father left the family when he was a child and he was sent to poorhouse several times because of his mother's bad mental state, where he was treated very badly) that it was impossible for him to suceed as a husband and father except if it was the right woman -- which Lita was not.
The book is interesting because of rare information about Chaplin's master piece THE KID (Lita played, ironically, an angel who seduced Charlie in that film), but otherwise it's a quite poor book. As I said previously, I feel sorry for Lita, Chaplin did obviously not treat her as he should have. She became involved in his life when he decided to give her the female leading role in THE GOLD RUSH. According to the book, he went to bed with her for the first time when she was 15 while her mother was asleep (with Lita's approvement, but it is doubtful that she really knew what she was doing), and she became pregnant. Chaplin was frustrated -- this meant that he was obligied to marry her, and she was the last girl he could ever share his life with. And he had to find another girl to THE GOLD RUSH.
A long story filled with details about how mean and cruel Chaplin was towards Lita begins. The last 150 pages includes the divorce complaint Lita wrote together with her uncle in 1927 and Chaplin's comments on it.
But why did you have to write this book when you was in your mid-80's, Lita? In his autobiography, Chaplin, who was just as bitter on Lita as she was on him, simply wrote: "While I was making THE GOLD RUSH I married a second time. Because we have two grown sons of whom I am very fond, I will not go into details. For two years we were married and tried to make a go for it, but it was hopeless and ended in a great deal of bitterness." But Lita had to take revenge, two times, actually. She wrote a similar book, MY LIFE WITH CHAPLIN, in 1966, but her then-co-author had exaggerated several incidents to spite it up. According to herself, this book is the true story, but how can we be sure? As far as we know, Vance has exaggerated this book as well.
To you who want to read a book about Chaplin which tells honestly about his faults as a human being but still describes him as a lovingly, charming person, I recommend his oldest son Charlie Chaplin Jr.'s book MY FATHER CHARLIE CHAPLIN.
This book is not really worth to get except if you have to read all the information that is ever written about the marvelous genius Charlie Chaplin.
Her ghostwritten first book was better.......2004-09-22
...and that's saying plenty. Lita Grey Chaplin had at least a hand in producing two books on her brief two-year marriage to Charlie Chaplin. The first book, published in 1966, was ghostwritten, but was much more interesting than this boring, plodding effort. If you're looking for lurid sexual escapades and revelations, opt for the 1966 offering, for there is nothing interesting contained in this book. In fact, the majority of the book is taken up with the complete divorce complaint of the Chaplins from 1927, which makes for stilted, uninspired reading. The photographic section is similarly flat and uninspired. The only thing worth reading in the entire book is the introduction written by Sydney Chaplin, Lita and Charlie's second born son.
One other reason for investigating the book is that it shows the unflattering side of Charlie, one which Chaplin addicts (like me) try to avoid confronting. Chaplin was a man of extreme moods and he could be enormously seductive, charming and adorable one minute, and a crude, insensitive cad the next moment. In fairness, Lita trapped Charlie into marriage when she got pregnant at the age of 16. Chaplin was interested in a torrid affair and not a permanent relationship; he demanded she get an abortion, she refused, and he was stuck in a loveless marriage. The whole arrangement was screwy from the get go, but Charlie's notorious aversion to contraceptives again did him in. Chaplin comes off very badly throughout the narrative and Lita even claims she never even loved him. Again, ths is in direct contrast to her 1966 book which shows her to have been a nymphmaniac/besotted Chaplin chick all the way.
I'd recommend this only to people who have a mania to read everything ever printed on Charlie; for casual fans, there's no necessity to bother over this tepid trifle.
Thanks to the warning reviewers.......2004-09-01
First, my rating should not be considered since I did not read this book. I would just like to take a minute to say something. I don't think I can actually thank the 2 reviewers warning not to buy this book by writing to them personally, so I will say it here. Thank you! I had a feeling this book would be just as you described. I didn't think Lita's motives or personality could ever be truly credible after the way she publicly drug his name through the mud during the divorce. Thank you for solidifying my assumption and saving me a few dollars! Glad others feel the way I do!
Very appreciative,
Chaplin fan forever
The dirt, m'am, nothing but the dirt.......2001-07-18
Lita Grey as hardly an important figure in the career of the great Chaplin. She was, of course, a scandalous footnote, one of the many far-too-young women in his life. Her time with Chaplin was brief, so any notion of her being any level of expert on him is, at best, vague.
Her influence on his art is greatly overstated, her impact on his life was limited to his wallet, and this book won't give anyone any legitimate insight into the artist or the man. It is just a self-serving tome, and not worth your while.
Leave us not support this; avoid, except for the titillation value.
A Fascinating Life.......2000-10-08
Here is a marvelous book detailing the fascinating and interesting life of LITA GREY CHAPLIN. She of course was the child bride of CHARLES CHAPLIN that mangaged to sue and win a substanial sum when divorcing him in 1927, causing one of the great Hollywood scandals of the 1920's. I enjoyed this book because it clears up all the distortions and inaccuracies of her first ghost-written memoir, "MY LIFE WITH CHAPLIN". In his introduction, author Jeffrey Vance clearly places LITA GREY'S importance in the history of CHARLIE CHAPLIN : She influenced three of CHAPLIN'S greatest films : THE KID, THE GOLD RUSH, and THE CIRCUS. Also included are the divorce documents and helpful notes and afterword. A must for CHAPLIN aficionados.
