3 out of 5 stars Watch Out for those Biting Corpses!.......2007-09-21

This is strange stuff! Decapitations, Suicides, Murders, Fetus-Eating Corpses... Reader Beware!

This is the first "Absurdism" material I've read. It certainly lives up to its reputation. Its certainly not my favorite literary style but it was a quick and interesting read. My favorite story was "The Old Woman" by Kharms. You've got to keep an eye on those corpse-containing suitcases!

I recommend this book to anyone looking for something completely out of the ordinary. It certainly earns a place in the libraries of those collecting Russian Literature. The book contains several poems in Russian at the end which may be of interest to those who know Russian.

On a side note, I've read many of the Russian literature books published by Northwestern University Press. All their books are good quality with sturdy covers and good quality paper. I highly recommend Northwestern University Press publications.

5 out of 5 stars you must read this book.......2007-07-07

By accident I ran across this book in the Cleveland public library, opened it to the middle, & began reading, then laughing, then nearly crying. This book is amazing. Kharms' prose is brilliant/hilarious/tragic. I give copies of his brief stories to friends, put them under windshiedls, or paste them onto bus stops. Little known, he deserves to be read by everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Fragments of Russia's Literature of the Absurd.......2001-02-27

The key to understanding this book, I think, lies in starting with the subtitle: "Russia's Literature of the Absurd." Kharms and Vvedensky are pen names of Russian/Soviet writers who are known in their home country for their children's books. This is because their more serious and creative writings did not agree with the Stalinist conception of proper art. Hence it was almost impossible for them to publish what they wanted. The editor George Gibian compiled in this volume the stories of Kharms and Vvedensky that have been preserved by their friends or simply lovers of literature. Some of my favorites in this volume are "Cashier" and "Power." I also enjoyed Kharms' poem about melancholy, which is printed in English in the Introduction and in its original Russian at the end of the book.

All stories are short, many less than a page long. They can finally take their proper place among important works of Russian literature. I cannot say that I was captivated or dazzled by this book, but it has interesting moments that will be appreciated by anyone interested in Russian literature or the literature of the absurd.

5 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!.......2000-11-14

I advise against reading this book in public, as your hysterical laughter could lead to suspicious glances at best, being carted off in a straightjacket at worst.

4 out of 5 stars CRAZY!.......2000-06-21

I don't know how effective Kharms was at making a points about Stalinist Russia, about art in the postmodern world or even about great literature. While you can certainly detect those elements in his short-short stories and his plays, they're more fun to read simply because they're so CRAZY FUN! Perhaps I'm taking some of the more serious portions having to do with death, rape, etc. too lightly, but at the very least you will be always surprised and captivated by these works. Try them out. Besides, when a story's only two paragraphs long (as many of them are) what do you have to lose?

4 out of 5 stars A Great Series .......2006-07-06

This is a great series by a truly gifted author. She has every element you look for in a good book. Suspense, excitement, hot and heavy petting, plus of course a happy ending.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant, make-merry tale.......2003-12-07

Spending eighteen months aboard a prison ship for crimes he didn't commit is as close to hell as Sir Christopher Chisholm has ever experienced in his twenty-eight years of living. If he hadn't escaped and found refuge in the Scottish Highlands, he'd still be aboard the Marion Ogilvy, a man condemned to a fate too dark to contemplate...But by whom?

What wicked conspiracy is at work here? Hoping to uncover the truth about his unjust imprisonment, Kit has returned to the border lands, where his estates as the Laird of Ashkirk and Tornes lie, only to discover that he's been declared legally dead, his property now in the hands of his uncle, Eustace Chisholm. (Who has also laid claim to Kit's unwanted betrothed, by the by: Lady Anne Ellyson's cousin, Fiona, a lass much too young to be the bride of the lecherous Sir Eustace).

Not that Kit is particularly concerned about the lass's fate, until a late night encounter with the lovely Lady Anne rouses his conscience and makes him aware of his uncle's plans to marry Fiona in a ceremony two days hence. He's not yet ready to reveal his presence, however, or let the element of surprise slip through his fingertips. Not when Kit is still laboring in the dark, so to speak, and doesn't know what Sir Eustace has been up to in his absence.

Besides, Lady Anne -- a daring, spirited lass -- is a much more desirable bride than her simpleton cousin. If he steps forward, he'll no doubt be forced to honor the betrothal contract his father fashioned with Fiona's greedy, grasping mother...and where will that leave Kit's potent attraction to Anne? Aye, there are entanglements aplenty to unravel, though how he's to go about the untangling is a mystery to Kit.

Members of the Secret Clan are up to their old tricks, plotting mischief (for the betterment of all, of course, and with naught but a wee bit of fae magic at their disposal) in Amanda Scott's medieval romance, REIVER'S BRIDE. The forth installment in the author's enchanting series about sixteenth century Scotland and the wee folk -- be they spirits, sprites, or puckish pixies -- is a pleasant, make-merry tale, and is blessed with a bounty of historical details and fanciful imaginings.

Maggie Malloch and her son, Brown Claud, are once again pivotal characters, and are intent on setting things to right in the mortal realm (though Claud is present in a slightly, er, diminished capacity), while Jonah Bonewits, the Clan's disgraced wizard, is determined to foil their plans. Lady Anne and Sir Christopher, Kit to his friends, fit into this percolating cauldron of plot twists with a wee bit of difficulty, however. With such an abundance of secondary characters -- including Anne's beautiful cousin, her aunt, and Kit's lascivious uncle -- a reader's attention is divided, and the primary romance between Anne and Kit is given short shift, I think.

It takes over a hundred pages for the protagonists' relationship to develop to the point that Ms. Scott's hero and heroine are more than passing ships in the night, though they remain star-crossed lovers, in a sense, for some time to come. Which is a little disappointing, as they're such a wonderfully charismatic couple and deserve so much more than moments of stolen intimacy. Also, Kit's near marriage to Anne's cousin, Fiona, is too close a call, quite frankly. I don't care about the extenuating circumstances: how can Kit just stand there and calmly submit to a marriage he doesn't desire? Anne's bravery and willingness to be more proactive in this matchmaking muddle are therefore of great assistance, bless her stalwart heart!

Now, I don't know if Amanda Scott is planning to continue on with this series, but REIVER'S BRIDE has shored up my hopes that she will. Interesting plot twists and the romance of Scotland -- the mountains, the mist, the castles, the lochs -- make for good reading, after all. Add a fair sprinkling of fae magic, and Ms. Scott's writing is positively luminous.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting historical romance with a touch of Scottish magic.......2003-09-04

In 1541 Scotland, the dying Border's Earl confesses to his daughter, Lady Anne Ellison, that he failed her by not insuring she had the protection of a husband. He tells her that since she will be wealthy in two years when she is twenty-one, she needs to stay low so she should live with Aunt Olivia at Mute Hill House.

After being falsely accused of two homicides, but not convicted, the sheriff sent Kit Chisolm to the prison ship Marion Ogilvy. After fifteen months of living in hell he has finally escaped. During his six years away from the Highlands, his father died so he is the Earl, but soon learns that his uncle declared him dead and claims the estate.

When Kit meets Anne, he is surprised to find he is attracted to the feisty woman. However, she may reciprocate, but feels loyalty to her cousin who is his intended bride. With the help of the Secret Clan, Kit and Anne may find a path to happiness, but both has enemies with plans that will leave one dead and the other living dead.

Amanda Scott's latest Secret Clan tale is an exciting historical romance with a touch of Scottish magic that enhances the engaging plot. The story line is fun to follow though in many ways the characters contain traits that are similar to previous books in the series. Still when the mischievous imps matchmake or perhaps interfere with human hearts, chaos occurs and readers have a good time.

4 out of 5 stars Romance and Magic in the Highlands - 4-1/2*.......2003-09-02

Setting ý Ellyson Towers, Scottish Border 1541 - Lady Anne Ellyson has suffered numerable losses of her family. Now alone she has been sent to live with her aunt Olivia and beautiful cousin Fiona. Coming to care deeply for her beautiful cousin she feels helpless to extricate Friona from an arranged marriage Fionaýs mother is forcing upon her to an odious older man, Sir Eustace Chisholm, Earl of Ashkirk. Feeling helpless to save Fiona from the hateful Earl, Anne rides out alone to de-stress herself and is set upon by a band of reivers. Anne discovers that the leader of this band of miscreants is none other than Sir Christopher ýKitý Chisholm (introduced in the prequel (Secret Clan: Highland Bride). Prior to being declared dead, Kit was betrothed to Fiona by proxy though he had never met her or agreed to the betrothal.

Returning ýfrom the deadý and testing the waters, Kit posed as a reiver to discover if his Uncle Eustace was involved in the trumped up murder charge that had Kit serving a life sentence aboard a prison ship. Discovering Lady Anne, alone and with no escort, forced him to discard his reiver persona and admit to his true identity. Lady Anne, although attracted to him herself, saw Kit as the answer to her dear cousin Fionaýs dilemma. Anne had to convince Kit to step forward, own up to being the true Earl of Ashkirk, and stop the wedding of Fiona to his hateful uncle. This would definitely solve Fionaýs problem, but as Anneýs feelings towards Kit intensified and Kitýs passion for Anne accelerates this would not be the ideal solution. Outside forces in the form of the elusive ýwee folký and their many intrigues could and would set most plans awry!

Having read the prequel HIGHLAND BRIDE, in the Secret Clan series I was delighted to revisit the Highlands for this engaging tale of intrigues set during a historical era I find appealing as well as giving Kit Chisholm a chance to tell his story and find romance. The reader picking this book up will find that it stacks up well as a stand alone but will find much more enjoyment by starting with the first of the series as there are numerous characters, both real and magical, who visit in and out of the story. While the human's have their turmoils, the ýwee folký that interfere and are ýsupposedý to watch over their human charges have just as many problems. The reader will certainly enjoy the antics of the fierce little Maggie Murdoch, her son Brown Claud, his girlfriend Catriona, Fergus Fishbait and all rest who make reading these stories a magical and fun experience. Fans who like a little magic in their tales will take much pleasure in and have fun returning to the magic of the highlands time and again. The series is romantic, fun, and one that I highly recommend.

Having more stories from A.E. van Vogt repackaged and reprinted can only be good news: along with Heinlein and Asimov, this prolific, wild-eyed author deserves much of the credit for pioneering science fiction's golden age back in the '40s and '50s. As a sort of crazy old uncle of modern sci-fi, though, van Vogt doesn't always get his due: his writing wasn't always spectacular, his plot and pacing fell somewhere between harum-scarum and willy-nilly, and his ideas were delivered in relentless salvos, each more outlandish than the last. But an embarrassment or not, the visionary van Vogt is indisputably part of the family, an entertaining and daring author whose influence can be seen in the work of countless other writers.

This 288-page paperback binds together two of van Vogt's better stories, "The Weapon Makers of Isher" and "The Weapons Shops of Isher," published in sequel-prequel order back in 1946 and 1951. These time-hopping, politically convoluted tales follow the struggle between the oppressive (but beautiful) Empress Innelda and the superadvanced libertarian Weapon Shops ("The right to buy weapons is the right to be free," reads the storefront sign). Much of the melodramatic plot revolves around the Shops' immortal, ultragenius founder Robert Hedrock, his conflict with the Empress, and their differing visions for the future of humanity, but don't fret too much over the details: van Vogt keeps your head comfortably a-swim in a steady stream of whiz-bang gadgetry, plot twists, and breakneck action. --Paul Hughes

      Book Description

Two classic Van Vogt works, The Weapon Makers and The Weapon Shops of Isher form the complete story of Robert Hedrock and the Empire of Isher. They are about revolution through time travel, the right to bear arms, the end of the universe and the beginning of the next.

5 out of 5 stars Van's best series in one big book.......2001-12-30

"The Weapon Shops of Isher" is an interestingly mosaic novel based on a few short stories published in the '40s, and the plot strands understandably hardly touch, but the overall effect is one of a nice cross-section of this society.

"The Weapon Makers," a 1943 novel that was written as a finale to the stories that made up "The Weapon Shops of Isher" is even better than the first, and is perhaps Van's finest novel. The plot is very straight-forward but nonetheless full of surprises and interesting turns. The writing style is far better than most of his output, which when combined with the excellent plot and characters makes an outstanding masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars Confusion about two different books.......2000-07-27

Another reviewer has reviewed a different book. "Reviewer: Trevor J Hall (see more about me) from PERRY,, ME USA At last the two books of the life of the mutant prince of the House of Lin have been combined in one cover...."

This is actually a review of _Empire of the Atom_, an SFnal re-telling of Robert Graves's _I Claudius_, and a quite different book, also by Van Vogt.

As to the books at hand, they are some of vV's best, but suffer from all his characteristic faults -- the too frequent plot changes, the endless consipiricies (often where the leaders of two opposed sides are secretly the same person) a society whose economic basis is dubious at best. But it is a page-turner, and one that keeps this reader returning from time to time. A classic that any SF fan should read sometime or other.

5 out of 5 stars a classic by a giant in the field.......2000-07-02

At last the two books of the life of the mutant prince of the House of Lin have been combined in one cover. A E van Vogt is a master wordsmith, 'thus died a whole legion of men', and this is one of his masterpeices. Somehow both dated and yet timeless this is the career of a mutant prince overcoming his handicaps and ultimately triumphing against his political foes, inspiring loyalty in his companions and gaining the cooperation and admiration of his piratical foes. The tale is told in a somewhat ironic vein which is unforgettable. I have spent many years wishing for a further sequel.

      3 out of 5 stars Justly reprinted.......2000-06-27

I have not seen this edition, but both the component novels, "The weapon makers" and "The weapon shops of Isher" are old friends. These are among the better of van Vogt's works, perhaps not the absolute best, but close. For books written some fifty years ago still remarkably readable. Justly reprinted.

Note that "The weapon makers" was written first but that "The weapon shops of Isher", added later, is a prequel. The stories are also different in tone: "The makers" is highly dynamic (almost dynamite), while the "The shops" is much quieter.

5 out of 5 stars What you and Job have in common.......2005-11-23

When Your Rope Breaks by Steve Brown is just the book when you fell like life is like Water Torture. Those times you cry out to family, friends, and God and feel like you are the only person in the universe. Steve Brown writer, Theological Professor, and radio host mixes just the right amount of Biblical direction and humor to get the point across, you are not alone. The book takes the reader down that lonesome road and delivers you to that place where if you are willing, even in the darkest times, you will know the presence of God.

By using the biblical story of Job Steve Brown shows the reader that all the platitudes and good intentions in the world, sometimes, just don't make you feel any better. But, the pay off in this book is that Christ through his suffering knows your suffering and does not abandon you.

If you have days when you just wonder why even get out of bed and if you do why continue on automatic pilot then When Your Rope Breaks by Steve Brown might be just the tonic for the soul that you need. The big plus in this book is that when it comes to personal suffering there are no easy answers. And, there are no quips and phrases that always bring comfort. But, the reader does find out that it is in that silence of suffering that God makes himself present.

4 out of 5 stars Hope for the hurting; Biblical insights -God knows and cares.......1998-08-24

Steve Brown writes as a friend sharing words of comfort gleaned from a life of helping hurting people find hope in God. The pains of life can make us bitter or by opening our lives to God, we can be renewed with God's unbroken promises. God knows and cares enough to be involved with life on earth. Many know about the ancient story of Job, but Steve has brought clarity to the wisdom of comforting truths in Job's encounter with God. God's unconditional love is there for those willing to openly express their deepest needs to God. Anyone struggling, suffering or hurting will find honest words of hope in this book.

1 out of 5 stars Crocodile tears from a Thimbleberries Fan.......2002-09-24

Why the tears? Cuz I'm used to the quality of the Thimbleberries books and this one fell so far short. If you are looking for a quilting book don't get this. It has pretty pictures, a few projects (though they are the same as in her other "real" books). This would be strictly for the person interested in decorating or a pretty coffee table book. I was hesitant to buy it because the book plainly states decorating, collecting and inspiration...well I was right. I will be returning this book and I have never done that before. So that should give you some indication of just how bad it is. For decorating it is way too cutesy and it's very thin on quilting and projects. Only good for the pretty pictures. Before spending money on this get it from your local library to make sure you are happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars More Great Decorating, Thimbleberries Style.......2002-01-01

If you love Christmas, and you love the Thimbleberries "look", you would do well to add this book to your collection. It has a wide variety of decorating ideas, as well as great projects, all done in the simple, staightforward style that Lynette Jensen is known for. This book is a good buy, even if you just get it for the pictures, which are spectacular. I spent days just browsing through it and enjoying it. I'm sure you will, too.

            Book Description

In addition to being the most important Finnish architect of the 20th century, Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898-1976) was also one the most noteworthy furniture designers of the modern era. His complete system--including stools, chairs, armchairs, and tea trolleys--is characterized by curving line formations that were considered exemplary. As early as 1938, Aalto's work was acquired by New York's Museum of Modern Art. His bentwood Paimio chair is celebrated in a family of furniture design that includes such luminaries as Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Charles Eames. In collaboration with his first wife, Aino Marsio, Aalto also designed organic, floral forms in glass. Their Savoy vase of 1936, created for the hotel of the same name, is legendary, and their group of bowls designed to be combined in a formation called the Aalto Flower has often been compared to the sculptures and paintings of classical modernism. This essential publication presents the pioneering furniture, glass objects, and lamps of Alvar and Aino Aalto in a well-edited selection of photographs, paintings, drawings, and sketches.

                4 out of 5 stars Print Fetish.......2000-03-25

If you love looking at magazines, then this book is for you. Here is a survey of the past year's magazine designes submitted to the Society of Publication Designers annual competition. There are many wonderful examples of editorial design presented here and for those with a print fetish, it's exciting stuff. However, like any competition, the book does not necessarily contain the "best" work out there simply because not everything is submitted and judges' tastes are biased. Still, what's there is enjoyable.
