Randi McCafferty can take care of herself--and her baby son. She doesn't need the bodyguard her brothers hired to protect her and she certainly wouldn't want her bodyguard to be the man whom she'd slept with. but detective Kurt Striker didn't intend to let Randi out of his sight. He was going to find the secret of her baby's father and the secrets of who might hate her enough to threaten her life. If this meant opening every wound he'd ever suffered, that was part of the price of his job.
As Randi's enemy gradually grows closer, Kurt and Randi head for a remote mountain cabin, but even this security is short-lived. Of course, there's nothing like a remote mountain cabin for putting a hero and heroine together where they can't help fall in love. Finally, though, as they head back to Montana, their luck runs out and Randi's stalker finally tracks them down.
After a slow first half where Randi and Kurt spend too much time alone, thinking about the night they spent together, author Lisa Jackson picks up the pace in the second half. Randi remains strong and determined to be self-reliant but gradually understands what motivates Kurt and feels the emotional attachment. The mystery element of this Silhouette Desire serves mainly as an excuse to keep Randi and Kurt together and there isn't a lot of detecting going on.
quickie read, good writing, not much substance.......2004-07-21
Lisa Jackson's strong voice makes this quickie read pleasurable. The book is so fast-paced, due to the Desire low word count. This makes it hard to develop any sort of "real" story or character development. It hardly takes an hour to read this. You don't get a chance to really get to know the characters or why they act or react as they do. You're just told they do, accept it, and move on - quickly!
Randi McCaffery's tale (fourth in the series following stories with her three older brothers) picks up with someone still trying to kill her. Presumably, someone wants her dead because she bore a child out of wedlock, even though she refuses to name the daddy. There have been two attempts on her life, nearly killing her and causing to give birth to her baby prematurely. Now, she is determined to leave the family ranch for fear of putting her brothers in danger. Frankly, this pigheaded determination to "do it on her own" is contrived. When a person has someone trying to kill her, she does not run away from the very people that can help you. But that is what Randi does. She claims she is trying to lure the killer away from her brothers, but it's hard to accept as logical. She is also fleeing away from Kurt Striker. Their one night of passion sending Randi running heedless of the danger to her and her baby. Oh, she makes an attempt to hide the child, but not really.
Striker is hired by her brothers to go after Randi and be her bodyguard. She kicks and screams and walks into apartments where the-would-be murder has been. Finally, she is driven to flee the city with Striker in hopes of hiding from the killer.
Of course, their romance picks up once again. Randi spends the whole book running!
The killer is transparent. Sorry, with these tiny books there is just no time to develop secondary characters or make their motivations believable. Jackson is a strong writer and has done some marvelous work in series romance. Just Silhouette Desire's short 185-page length just cramps her completely.

Best ýGeneration Shipý story in a long time.......2001-04-19
Generation Ships launch colonists from Earth to the stars, hopefully with habitable planets. The ships are usually totally self-contained environments constructed to support life until arrival. The initial crew knows full well that when the ship eventually arrives, it will be long gone, as well as numerous successive generations.
This gives rise to several questions. First, will the people on board at the time of arrival even remember the mission or even know they are on a ship? Will the on-board society remain constant or evolve. Heinlein's "Orphans in the Sky" (probably the standard for the genre) and Stephen Baxter's Ring address both questions, but with strikingly different endings. Frank Herbert's "Destination: Void" asks philosophical and religious questions in a generation ship taken over by an artificial intelligence.
Colony Fleet varies the theme by sending numerous ships (hollowed out asteroids), as well as supporting vessels, to ensure the survival of humankind in the wake of a collapsing Earth. There is not one, but instead several destinations, called Waystations. The story involves a society stratified into the "Jneers" at the top and "Mechs" at the bottom. The journey didn't start out that way. The Jneers live in the big ships, called Noun Ships, which have names such as "Polar" and "Temperate" that define the types of environments the fleet is trying to preserve. The Jneers have evolved into a ruling class and have vested interest in maintaining the status quo. The Mechs fix things and live in the supporting vessels, which are run down and often lacking in resources. There is an in between "Admin" class that plays supporting role.
The story begins about 400 years in the future and revolves around a young woman, Hillbrane Harkover, as she prepares for her Jneer exam. The results of the exam are a foregone conclusion; she will pass (everyone passes) and take her rightful place among the Jneers. However, her best friend betrays her during the exam and she ends up failing, the first failure in the fleet in a long time. She is banished to the Mechs' ships as unfit to be a Jneer. After her initial shock and disappointment, she discovers she likes her Mech life and falls in love. Eventually, she and her love are assigned to the advance party to Waystation One
This party is a mix of Jneers and Mechs; her "friend" is also a member of the advance crew. A things go worng, the friend constantly rationalizes that everything he has done is for her. He is absolutely convinced that once she realizes it, she will go back to him. He really hasn't a clue and (hope this does not become a spoiler) plays a significant role in the many problems experienced by the advance party both to and on Waystation One. She and several others manage to escape the planet and make their way back to the fleet.
The story ends years later; Waystation One is settled by residents of one the Noun Ships, which remains in Orbit. The rest of the fleet sails toward Waystation Two. H. "aitch" Harkover is a now mother and wife and lives happily ever after with her Mech husband. And that is a fine way to end a story.
This is a good book, I've always liked generation ship stories (and happy endings); I really liked this one. The crew knows and understands what its mission is and is focused on it. However, the society has changed considerably from what the mission planners had intended. The Jneers are not about to give up their position. The book is also a very easy read. Ms. Matthews write clearly and concisely. I will read more of her.
No real surprises.......2001-03-22
Matthews has never quite lived up to the expectations created by her first novel, the wonderful `An Exchange of Hostages'. Where that first work was bold and imaginative her subsequent novels have been either luke warm re-interpretations of the same theme (`Prisoner of Conscience' and `Hour of Judgment') or poorly conceived and clumsily plotted (the abysmal `Avalanche Soldier'). Yet I still keep buying and reading her novels! Why? Probably because they are, even at their worst, pleasant escapist stories that aren't too taxing to read. There are no real surprises in Matthews' work but that doesn't work against her.
`Colony Fleet' quickly sets itself up as a typical `Good Girl Hardly Done By' story. Hillbrane Harkover is a Jneer, one of the ruling class of the fleet sent from Earth 400 years earlier. Through a fairly quick series of events culminating in Hillbrane being betrayed by her best friend she is demoted to the level of a Mech. Surprisingly, she finds the harsh life of a Mech more to her liking, even as she dreams of returning to the privileges of being an elite Jneer.
This is not a challenging book but it is definitely an improvement over Matthews' last novel and a welcome step back in the direction of her intelligent and thought provoking first novel.

to me this book only got interesting in the middle, lots of details. It also almost made me shed a tear. I like the way she depicted her characters. It was very visual the whole way through. I would look forward to reading more of her books.
Ms Matthews has done better........2001-01-01
This novel was not quite as good as other Susan Matthews novels I have read. But this one did not have the torture and violence of her other series. The story didn't hold up as well in this novel. She had people out on a fleet of colonizing ships traveling to a way station planet four hundred years out from Earth. What bothered me there was that there was no apparent advancement in much including technology. Even social structures didn't appear to have changed all that much. That doesn't work well with no explanation of why not since we normally progress a great deal in all areas in that length of time. Still it was a fairly good read and I enjoyed the novel. It was also good to read something without the violence in other Susan Matthews novels. I don't even like to admit to myself that I have read and enjoyed those novels.

I enjoyed this novel from beginning to end. The premise is convincing, the science unshakeable, the characters distinguished and likeable. No one does the painting of human interactions on a solid sf background like Susan. Just a joy to read!

Worth spending a lot of time with.......2005-03-31
I had this from the library and now I want a copy, so I can go slowly through the meditative practices described. I particularly liked the "light" meditations.
One of the book's best features is the focus on bringing back into everyday life what you have gained by stepping out of everyday life. This is an important perspective often missing from contemplative works.
Khan quotes freely, and knowledgeably, from Hindu, Buddhist and Christian ideas as well as giving a good introduction to his Sufi tradition. The only flaw I noted is that his grasp of physics, even for metaphorical purposes, is extremely poor, but you can ignore that and just enjoy the spiritual wisdom.

I don't know what else to add to what has already been said, but one thing which I must say is that this book changed my life. If you are looking for a bit of help in trying to get inside yourself and then to look at the world through a greater perspective, read this book.
Take Time To Heal.......2004-02-25
When "The Awakening" arrived, it took me 2 weeks before I sat down and turned to page one. I tried to scan through like a "good" student, but somehow this book is not a typical Sufi book that teaches you through steps without wisdom. You have to be "awaken" or to "have died before death", in order to embrace every word, and comprehend the underlying structures and words chosen to convey the message therein. I would recommend "The Awakening" only to serious seekers. If you are a self-labelled religionist {Muslim, Jew, or Christian} and a staunch one at that you might find yourself against a brick wall.
"The Awakening" is a book that teaches you to take the time to heal your heart, in the wake, will then open you to your "Reality". The religion of the heart is most important here. If you're devoid of that, taking the path written therein can be an awesome task. "The Awakening" is one of the best Sufi manual I've read and understood without recoursing to references. A must-have in your collection, if you're seriously contemplating returning "home" sanely.

Based on my own experience, I can't say enough to encourage others to seek out retreat experiences. But for those who cannot carve out the time, this fine book comes as near to the real thing as I've seen. Pythia Peay's transcription and editing of retreat sessions by Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan allows the reader to participate in the "process of inner unveiling" (ix) and awakening at the heart of this very readable and ecumenical book. With a gentle insistence on the development of conscience ("awakening in life") as a result of "awakening beyond life", Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan provides an antidote to mystified notions of spirituality and the disengagement often associated with conventional religious enthusiasm. The Best for Photograph Dating.......2007-07-23
This is an excellent "textbook" for anyone who is getting into dating old photographs. Taylor gives very thorough and accurate information on photography processes and the types of photographs to be found in old collections.
The section on identifying costume is especially fine, although it is just a beginning for learning how to determine age by the clothing being worn. The worksheets provided at the end of the book are especially helpful.
All in all, if you are only going to buy one book on this subject, this is the book for you!

A real help to genealogists!.......2001-04-18
This book has great value to the genealogist. When confronted with unidentified photographs, we often despair of ever identifying the subjects. This book offers real assistance with this. Author Maureen Taylor offers detailed information on using clues in photographs themselves to identify their subjects. One example on pages 42-43 shows a street scene in Providence, Rhode Island. Since the photo contains telephone lines, research can place the image after 1881, the year telephone service was introduced there. The date can be even more precisely determined by other internal details of the photo. The book's appendices include a "Timeline of Photographic History" and an excellent bibliography of sources.

This book is an outstanding way to expand your family history skills through photo research. It provides step-by-step advice on how to identify ancestors in photos using their poses, clothes, studio props, and other information.
After giving a history of photography with emphasis on identifying types of photographs by era, the author provides chapters such as "Looking for Clues", "Identifying Costume", and the very important "Identifying the Photographer". The book also gives detailed information on how to build your own family photograph collection including the use of photograph worksheets and proper labeling.
The photographs used to illustrate the book are simply glorious. It is a visual treat to follow the pictorial examples given to explain the text. Each photo is an exquisite specimen of how our ancestors faced the camera.

If you live in a 5 million dollar house, this is the book for you. If you have a 3000 sq foot cape cod, forget it. I purchased this book to learn how to light MY house. I don't have a 60 foot indoor pool, or a mountain top view of downtown LA. This book was of no use to me at all. I give it 2 stars because it has nice photos, of houses most of us will never see in person.

This book is filled with examples from around the world of magnificent homes that are enhanced by stunning outdoor lighting effects. It is as much a gallery of artistic lighting as it is a sourcebook for the designer or homeowner looking for ways to make their home stand out.
The book is broken into sections with a brief overview of each before the many photographic examples. These include transforming a home after dark with dramatic lighting effects, creating a moon lighting effect and my favorite section on lighting pools and fountains with some really fabulous designs. There are also sections on outdoor rooms, landscape lighting and some wonderful ideas on using the view in through a window as part of the exterior design and lighting plan.
Full color, full-page photos fill most of the book. Brief descriptions are provided in captions along with designer and photographer credits. There is contact information for these designers and photographers along with some lighting manufacturers in the back of the book. This is a design book, not a technical manual. Each caption tells the type of fixtures used but there is no information on wiring or installation.
A very useful chapter on common lighting mistakes along with frequently asked questions and a glossary conclude the book. Although most of the examples in this book are of homes well beyond average means, many of the ideas and principles presented can be adapted to enhance almost any dwelling. I found it quite inspirational and enjoyable.

Wonderful photographs but otherwise a bit thin. This is a picture book mostly of California projects with some colder climate installations so these lush landscapes can only be envied by homeowners and gardeners outside the semi-tropics. DIYers will find this particular meal consists more of dessert than substantial fare. The clear intention of this book is as a feast for the eye and the few pages of technical information consist of an overview of techniques, common mistakes (with which I heartily concur), Q & A and a glossary. There is a helpful list of lighting designers (the first I've seen) limited mostly to the West Coast. There are plenty of good ideas here and most of the photograph captions contain a brief but useful description of how the lighting effects were achieved.

Simple... this book is extremely useful to me. You know I broguth a new house and it help me alot of design stuff... it saved us alot of design fee... worth to buy this boolk. Go ahead.
