Book Description
"HER BEST BOOK SO FAR....[It is] one of the most literate, intelligent and powerful novels I have ever read."
--Eugenia Thornton
The Cleveland Plain Dealer
Professor Jane Clifford is in her early thirties, smart, and attractive. A popular teacher at a midwestern college, she appears to be going somewhere. But Jane knows better. After a lifetime habit of looking to books for the answers to life's mysteries, she seems to be finding only more questions.
Then her beloved grandmother suddenly dies, and Jane returns home for the funeral, where she is faced with the little dramas and fictions of both the past she has lived and the past she has only been told about. In the midst of it all, she is considering breaking off a long-term, long-distance affair, but like the family stories she tries to make sense of, she cannot seem to find a reason to claim a life of her own....
"PROVOCATIVE...The Odd Woman is an ambitious and intricately developed novel....One of the most realistic, intelligent and skillful character studies of a contemporary woman to date....Godwin is an extraordinarily good writer....She is a shrewd observer of human sensibilities and shortcomings--particularly those of women--and she explores them in depth with sensitivity, wit and an uncanny eye for the truth."
--Chicago Sun-Times
"EXCITING AND AFFIRMATIVE...It is a privilege to watch the unfolding of her impressive talent."

Not Godwin's best, but..........2000-09-17
Father Melancholy's Daughter, its sequel, Evensong, and A Mother and Two Daughters are, for me, vintage Godwin. They set the standard for penetrating characterization and unsettling glimpses into how people really work. I picked up The Odd Woman with high hopes and was not utterly disappointed. Flickers of the good things Godwin will accomplish in later novels are abundant in this rather dense exploration of a "spinster professor's" running inner dialogue. If this is your first go-around with Godwin, however, skip this for the infinitely richer Father Melancholy's Daughter or A Mother and Daughters.
A disappointment!.......1999-05-24
I first read this book when I too was a 30ish, unmarried college professor, like its heroine. Fiction which tackles the concerns of professional women was then, as now, rare. I eagerly sought out this book, and what a disappointment it was! The professional concerns received almost no attention, while the heroine's energies were consumed by ill advised romantic and erotic relationships. So what's new? Poorly conceived and not very well written!
An interesting character study;not so interesting character........1999-04-19
Gail Godwin has written some wonderful books; it was the experiences I've had with Ms. Godwin's books that kept me reading this one. I cared very little for the characters or for the story, but kept reading, looking for one of those gems of revalation that sometimes strike when reading Gail Godwin - even those were lacking. Books must be so well written that the words and sentences themselves keep you turning the page; if the words fail the characters and plot must take over. I could not make myself care what happened to Jane Clifford; a professor of literature who refers to George Eliot by the infrequently used Marian Evens (Mary Anne the name used in standard references and biographical notes). At first, I didn't even know who she was referring to, and in the end I found it to be an annoyance. Jane reminded me of one of those people who feel burdened by their intelligence and remove themselves from the world as we know and enjoy it because they are "just a cut above", yet she mourns her lack of close relationships and sticks, from pride rather than love, to a married man who treats her like the sometime mistress of a married man, and a friend who annoys her by looking for friendship.
well-written but delves too deeply into too many issues.......1998-08-24
This is the first time I've read a book by Gail Godwin. As it relates to real-life issues, it is not action-packed, nor is it fast paced. It is a bit difficult getting through the 423 pages. It is an accurate portrayal of a thirtysomething, single woman struggling with past decisions. Analyzing her present situation, a two-year affair with an older, married man, she looks to her family (mother, grandmother, half-sister, great aunt) for clues on which direction to take. So much research, so much reflecting, etc., are certainly believable but tedious to read. Interesting characters are introduced (the previously mentioned family members, friends, step father, etc.) but some of them seem extraneous to the central story. A little more focus might have made this more compelling. And, frankly, I am not sure that I ever fully cared for the main character enough to care about her decision. Just when I felt a kinship with her, her thoughts took her someplace else and lost me. Her relationship with her grandmother might have been explored in a separate book. Or, even a tale of the three generations of women and their development over a couple of decades. This book included some of that plus outside friendships plus the affair which was just too much for one volume.
Wonderful book!.......1996-06-27
Gail Godwin is one of my favorite authors. Single women will
appreciate this book immensely. Godwin weaves a convincing story
of a 30+ single woman who examines her relationships when her beloved
Grandmother dies. While this story might seem like a familiar
one for readers of southern fiction, Godwin adds new depth by creating the
most convincing portrait I have ever read of the "internal dialogue"
that plagues all of us. Jane Clifford, the book's protagonist, is one of the
most convincing characters I've ever had the pleasure to know! Enjoy!

High seas adventure leads to passionate love.......2006-02-16
Summer Ashton has been sold into marriage to Gowan McConnel, a Scottish Earl that she has never met. Leaving her beloved plantation in the Caribbean, she sets sail for the colder climate of Scotland and is beset upon and kidnapped by pirates.
Brent Douglas didn't really need to plunder another ship, as his own is full to the side rails. After finding out that the ship carried the wife of the Earl of Heatherstone, the man he blames for his own ruined life in Scotland, he couldn't resist adding her as a plundered prize.
Leigh Greenwood has written a fascinating story involving pirates, the Caribbean, as well as mixing in the Scottish element - all the elements for my favorite type of historical. THE CAPTAIN'S CARESS has a few twists that caught me by surprise, and is full of action.
However, there are a few issues that I felt were unresolved or were never clarified, which I found confusing. From the very beginning, we know that the Earl somehow stole Brent's heritage, but Brent tells the Earls agent he is going to treat Summer exactly as he (Gowan) would himself. Besides (I feel) raping her via seduction, all they did was quarrel; and somehow fall in love. I found myself wondering on several occasions what he meant by that statement.
Actually, I liked the arguments between Summer and Brent. They were very refreshing and realistic. I however don't know how she could fall in love with him, because he really struck me as an overgrown child that overcompensated for one wrong by committing another. He has a good heart, and the best of intentions (most of the time) but he really did treat Summer as a captive bedmate. I will however concede that I also think he was forced to "grow up" and go rescue Summer from the Earl and therefore deal with his past at the same time, or lose the woman he has come to love.
I liked Summer as a heroine. She seemed very genuine and just as confused about falling in love with Brent as I was with her falling in love. Maybe its because he was a good person underneath the appearance of being a pirate. Regardless she was very intuitive despite living a sheltered life on a Caribbean Island. I also liked the way she stood up to him, even if the end result was she did get seduced again (Brent's solution for everything).
I would really rate THE CAPAIN'S CARESS as 3 ½ stars because I can't give it four but it deserves more than just three. The book just doesn't fall into the category of a story I couldn't put down. While I think Brent came across as an overbearing child most of the story, I would recommend THE CAPTAIN'S CARESS simply because the story was very well thought out and written and over all was an excellent pirate novel.
A complete love story!.......2005-07-12
Heard that Leigh was a man and was curious how I would enjoy a man writing a love story - well this man truly knows what makes a very hot intense love story. Brent Douglas is a man's man, powerful, sexy, very amusing and not totally living his life for revenge - because he easily gives up his revenge when he quickly falls in love with his enemies wife Summer as he captures her on the ship she is taking to Scotland. In addition to the passion between these two, which was so very well done - I loved the dialog - Greenwood has great dialog. Neither of these two were just willy nilly characters - they both knew how to survive and they would both need these qualities to get through their love. The length of this book allows one to totally get involved in their heartfelt story - really really a great book - can't wait to read more from this male romance writer!!
good read.......2000-11-14
This book is very passionate and emotional. The sex scenes are really hot and there is alot of emotional upheaval. It is your basic kidnapping romance, the heroine Summer Ashton is forced to wed by her father. She is headed to meet her new husband when her ship is attacked by another ship. The captain of the other ship is Brent Douglas and he has a grudge against Summer's husband. He decides to get back at him through her. When he realizes she is innocent and she was forced to marry he no longer uses her as a form of revenge and they have a steamy affair, but Summer cannot forget what he did, so even though she desires him she is forever fighting him and at odds with him. This book has plenty of passion, the story is fast paced and interesting. The female character is not a complete doormat for the male, like they tend to be with these older historical romances. I recommend this book.

Aimless novel .......2007-04-13
I was quite excited to find this book at the local bookstore a couple of weeks ago. The previous four "Gateway" novels are among my favorite SF novels, with inventive aliens, interesting characters and strong plotting. In marked contrast, "The Boy Who Would Live Forever" is an aimless ramble that adds nothing to our knowledge of the Gateway universe, its characters, or anything else. One example will suffice. In "The Annals of the Heechee," we get a chunk of information about the Foe. They are interesting and worth exploring further. So, in this novel, we get about 3 pages with the Foe, in a completely unbelievable situation, and then the Foe never turn up again! This novel is tedious and uninteresting, and fans of "Gateway" should ignore it and pretend that the series ends with "The Annals of the Heechee."
Weak finish to the Gateway Saga.......2007-01-10
Baeing a avid Fred Pohl reader and being throughly entertained by the earlier Gateway novels I expected this to be a strong finish to the series. Instead what we have is a weak rambling story that bears little or no resemblence to the source. It left me wondering "Mr. Pohl what happened?
episodic epic.......2007-01-04
I've read a lot of great Pohl books and this one ranks up there with the best. There's a lot going on and several characters get to carry the story at one time or another. After a few adjustments, this book would make a fantastic film. This story seems like a good conclusion to the Heechee saga but I for one would love to read more.
If you join me I'll then transport you to splendid selection of interesting Core planets .. not.......2006-08-22
I have just finished this book and put it down with a big yawn. There is a mix of characters and points of views, introducing of new characters (sometimes interesting as Marc Anthony), boring the reader with other characters even the author seemed to be no longer interested in after some chapters, and a very unsatisfactory solving of open threads (Wan). The Heechee parts are amusing and have the old Gateway feeling but that is pretty much all that is left from novels 1-3. And the endless obsessions about food might be amusing in the beginning but is soon getting really boring.
All in all this seems more a sum of sketches and scenes hold together by some strained plot than a decent book as we know and can expect from F. Pohl.
OK if you're a Gateway fan, skip it if not.......2006-04-05
Fred Pohl returns to "Gateway" with perhaps the series' most lightweight entry to date. We follow two young would-be explorers who have the misfortune to be out on a failed prospecting trip when Robinette Broadhead discovers how to read/set the Heechee spaceship controls. The two explorers, a young woman and a younger man, end up signing up for a trip to the core. Along the way they become lovers (surprise!), and most of the book deals with their effort to fit in with the Heechee at the core. We also find out that the lovers spend a lot of time in the sack.
The supporting characters are not terribly well-fleshed out. I guess that's appropriate given that they are either Heechee (very little flesh) or stored/machine intelligence. Pohl must really be a gourmet, as one (machine) character is a cook who goes into excruciating detail - over and over - about the meals it prepares. Said cook also turns into an intelligence officer along the way as a plot to kill millions of Heechee dominates the last third of the book.
You'll see a lot of old favorites here. The Kugel (aka the Foe) put in an appearance, as do Gelle-Klara Moynlin, Sigfrid Von Shrink, the Gateway Corp, the Old Ones, and a host of familar Heechee. Rob Broadhead, while frequently mentioned, does not put in an appearance - in person or otherwise.
If you've read the series, you'll get warm fuzzies from visiting our old friends again, but "...Forever" does not stand on its own. Pohl assumes you've read several other novels in the series; you'll be lost if you haven't.
Book Description
"A short, masterful, information-packed examination, a book that is thoroughly trustworthy, and spot-on." -Michael Novak, National Review
When sexual scandals rocked the American Catholic Church, many observers and faithful alike called on the church to abandon its tenets on the vocation of the priesthood and sexuality outside marriage-to, in effect, become more Protestant. Acclaimed theologian and best-selling author George Weigel saw the crisis differently: as a crisis of fidelity to the true essence of Catholicism. In this well-reviewed book that touched a chord with so many practicing Catholics, Weigel examines the scandal in the context of church history, and exposes the patterns of dissent and self-deception that became entrenched in seminaries, among priests, and ultimately among the bishops who failed their flock by thinking like managers instead of apostles.
But, Weigel reminds us, in the Biblical world a "crisis" is also a time of great opportunity, an invitation to deeper faith. With honesty and critical rigor, Weigel sets forth an agenda for genuine reform that challenges clergy and laity alike to lead more integrally Catholic lives. More than just a response to recent failures, The Courage to Be Catholic is a bracing, forward-looking call to action, and a passionate embrace of life lived in faith.

A true story I suspected but had no way of knowing.......2007-01-09
It does take courage to be Catholic in the modern world. And that's ok especially when the truth is at stake. Weigel has the background and the discerning intellect to present that truth without the varnish of political correctness and the attempt by self-appointed Catholic "Intellectuals" to out secularize the secularist.
The truth is always refreshing especially when put forth in a charitable but forthright way.
We presented it in a Catholic book club reading and it was very well received by all.
An important read for all Catholics in this age of persecution and attack on the church-[what age isn't].
The "Courage to be Catholic" does present a great gift of hope in the reforms we have already seen in the Church in the last few years.
A Call That Can Be Challenging.......2006-08-25
As the crisis in the Catholic Church unfolded in all its ugly details, a number of books were published with the intent of giving perspective about what has been happening in the Church. Three books that continue to educate and enlighten are George Weigel's THE COURAGE TO BE CATHOLIC which approaches the issue from a more traditional approach. David Gibson's THE COMING CATHOLIC CHURCH looks at the church from the point of view of a journalist and Catholic convert. Peter Steinfels' A PEOPLE ADRIFT has been dubbed "the liberal" book, perhaps because of Steinfels' association with the magazine COMMONWEAL.
I was prompted to write this review based on the number of one and two star reviews this book received as well as a book from a different ideological perspective--Peter Steinfels' A PEOPLE ADRIFT. Since matters of the faith are held deeply by people, people can have strong opinions, but I'm not sure that the reviews that were negative of both books were based solely on the respective book's content or the author's ideology. George Weigel may be a more traditional author and may hold the leadership of the Church in high regard, but he hardly buried his head in the sand during the crisis nor did he support those who caused scandal and did not hold Church leaders who covered up the scandal in high regard. Reading the book jacket alone alerts readers to his disgust. His book may not be critical enough for some people but he does keep the focus on two important areas, one being the importance of holiness and tradition among Catholics and the other being that there are signs of hope in the Church. What Weigel does well is separating the faith from the scandal and challenges us to live the faith.
Weigel does believe that many of the problems we face today can be traced to a failure to practice the true faith and believes that if dissenters of HUMANAE VITAE were dealt with earlier, things would be different. This may be somewhat simplistic, especially when we remember that many of the crimes were happening when the magisterial authority had a tighter grip on Catholics. However, his call to return to a more traditional faith is as much a part of Vatican II as is the expanded role of the laity and some of the progressive changes from the council. Sometimes the call to be traditional is just as difficult as the call to change, but there has to be a balance of both if the Church is to survive which is why Weigel's points are important to consider, even by readers who may be prone to disagree with much of what he has to say. Also, since perspective is important, the books by Gibson and Steinfels on these issues should not be ignored either.
Amazing Book!.......2006-05-19
This book is simply amazing. Before I read this book, I never understood the way the bishops and the Vatican reacted to the crisis of sexual abuse in America. Now that I've read this book, I do understand. Everything boils down to a crisis of faith, and a crisis of fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Every Catholic needs to read this book!
A Must Read for Catholics and non-Catholics Alike.......2006-04-20
This is an excellent book that I would very highly recommend to anyone gravely concerned by the Catholic sexual abuse scandals.
Mr. Weigel treats a very controversial topic with a fearlesness and clarity that are much needed. His analysis of the roots of the Clerical abuse scandals demonstrate an accute understanding of human weakness and sin, but also the noble heights to which we must strive. Rather than lowering the bar in the face of difficulty, Weigel calls for honest reflection, conversion, and renewal in the face of tragedy. Weigel avoids scoring political points and respects both the vulnerability of the victims and the integrity of the Church in light of the failings of some of Her members.
He pulls no punches in describing the massive spiritual and executive failings and systematic bureaucratic shortcomings of clergymen from the parish level to some in the Vatican. The tragedy of abuse by a few, compounded by the cowardice and poor judgement of others highlights the need for reform in the way the Church, especially Bishops, view and handle these cases. However, "restructuring management" will only treat symptoms, not treat the illness. Spiritual reform and renewal are needed. Streamlined bureaucracy cannot solve the problem of spiritual deficiency. Weigel makes a strong cases for a return to Catholic orthodoxy and true commitment to discipleship as the only true solution to the problem.
Benedict XIV: Just what the Doctor (Weigel) hoped for.......2005-05-22
"Historically knowledgeable and realistic people can understand that clerical sexual corruption has been and always will be a problem in the church. But there is no explaining the breadth of the corruption that was brought to public attention in the first half of 2002, or the lack of effective leadership from some bishops in responding to it, without taking full account of the invisible schism that the culture of dissent created in the Catholic Church in the US." That's why the elevation to pope of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (an event too recent to be included in this book) is an especially hopefull one (in the opinion of Catholics on the same page as Mr. Weigel) further reinforcing the fact that the crisis of 2002 was, in Mr. Weigel's view, "the last hurrah of the Catholic Lite Brigade." There's a reason why preistly "abuse seemed to be clustered in a period between the early 1960s and the late 1980s": that by that time and into the 90s the situation "had begun to be addressed, and rather effectively" by John Paul II, Mr. Weigel adds. Ships of state & the like cannot swifty change their bearings, of course, but if John Paul II was successful at anything (besides helping to bring down communism), it was getting a handle on, & muting internal dissent; "against those who insist that there is a 'spirit of Vatican II' that somehow transcends the Council's texts and, indeed, trumps the settled tradition of the Catholic Church." The results of such "faithful dissent" became utterly apparent owing to the crisis of 2002 and the exposure of what had been going on for too long. Such is Mr. Weigel's thesis; that while "some seminaries gained notoriety in the underground of Catholic chatter for their gay subcultures, which often included faculty members as well as students," others within the church increasingly questioned all manners of church doctrine as the cultural ways of the 1960s & on affected the Church as well. All this while many bishops came "to think of themselves primarily as conversation-moderating consensus builders and managers, rather than apostles." The latter situation, unfortunately still has not been addressed as effectively as have the seminaries, in Mr. Weigel's opinion. Hence the atrocious handling of the crisis of 2002, as Cardinal Law, amongst others, put damage control on a higher plane than his apostolic responsibilities. It didn't help matters either than John Paul II was hardly in a state of health in which to intercede more forcefully during this period. So, that excuses the church? No, it does not, Mr. Weigel argues, but rather than viewing the crisis of 2002 and its aftermath as a cataclysm, he sees it as an opportunity to complete that which John Paul II started in the 1980s: a return to fidelity; a return to the sanctity of vows for those priests wishing to remain such, and a return to roots; to not compromising on moral boundries or doctrine for the sake of consensus. Under John Paul II, who epitomised such, further reinforced by Cardinal Ratzinger's elevation as pope, the Catholic Church's message of late has been that the issue of the currently perceived notion of "modernity" is not something that the church ought simply surrender to, as "The Catholic Lite Brigade" proposes. Times change, after all, and have a cyclical aspect to them in some regards as well. The Vatican does not, consequently, have to compromise on issues such as homosexuality, abortion, and women priests just because "Cafeteria Catholics" had a great run under Pope Paul VI. It can wait out such storms. It's in it for the long run, after all. Moreover, do you really believe that say, older Europeans will flock back to the Church were it to become more "liberal"? For their children, the ones who flocked to see John Paul II in person wherever he went & were ubiquitious at his funeral, however, the Church has more resonance---in spite of church doctrine? Or perhaps because the Church is stalwart on doctrinal boundries in a world of seeming moral decay? God Bless.

Great Cooking!.......1999-03-29
I had a wonderful dinner party and made the Bobotie dish. It was a great success! Most of my guests wanted the recipe. I told them to just buy the book because there are so many wonderful dishes and they are easy to make. I have had the pleasure of eating both Lesley and Myrna's cooking, they are both wonderful cooks.
Practical, tasty S.A. dishes.......1998-12-04
"South African Gourmet Food & Wine" by Myrna Rosen and Lesley Loon
Don't be fooled by the title; this book is for all of us. Not only for experienced or gifted cooks but for those, like me, trying their hand for the first time. I particularly liked being told how many guests each recipe is designed to feed. I liked being given the option of measuring in either Metric or Imperial and I liked the simple way each recipe is explained. I showed it to a Master Chef friend and, despite his twenty years of experience, he was impressed.
Two old favourites that caught my eye were a Cape Malay dish called "Bobotie" based on fish and spices and "Monkey Gland Steak" with a terrific sauce of onions, mushrooms, Worcestershire and tomato sauce.
At random here are a few more : "Boerewors" (a typically South African barbeque sausage), Tomato Bredie (a tasty meat and tomato stew), Melktert (milk tart), Watermelon jam, Herring in mustard sauce, Sundried tomato and roasted garlic spread, Bombay curried banana chicken soup, Fish steak au poivre, Herb crusted rack of lamb and so on and so on and so on.....
This book is a must if you have ever lived in, or visited, South Africa. It will bring back many memories.
A *must* for every kitchen!.......1998-10-29
What a joy to have another Myrna Rosen cookbook on my shelves! This time she has teamed up with Lesley Loon and they have created yet another tour de force. My Mom gave me my first Myrna Rosen cookbook when I got married many years ago. It soon became my "bible" in the kitchen. Then came the second book, and again I was not disappointed. The new book is, if it's at all possible, even better! I have made many of the recipes to wild acclaim from all. There are so many outstanding ones, it's hard to pick one or two to mention specifically, although the Croissant Bread Pudding has caused more oohs and aahs than anything I have ever made before. The salads are imaginative and anyone who is a vegetarian will find themselves with many choices. The extensive South African section is a trip down Memory Lane, and Myrna and Lesley have also kindly considered those of us watching the fat grams by adapting some recipes, such as the fish and vegetarian options for bobotie. The Ratatouille Torte and the Tortellini Salad are unusual and appealing, and the Best Ever Chocolate Cake with Caramel Frosting is just that -- the best ever! I have given this book as a gift many times to some most grateful recipients. It is a "must" for anyone who enjoys good cooking!
Dashed Anticipation.......1998-10-14
I bought this book in great anticipation and was dissapointed to find that only the first 72 pages, equal to one quarter of the book were devoted to South African food. I felt duped! and my further disappointement were blatant misrepresentations e.g. Traditional Bobotie is made with ground cooked lamb not beef. As a one South African to another, Ms. Rosen please be true to our cuisine.
An orgy for the tastebuds!.......1998-07-02
Being a novice cook, I find the recipes easy to follow and a sure fire way to impress my friends. The balsamic chicken and Ethel's cookies are some of my favorites.

Beautiful!!!.......2002-01-19
This book is everything I hoped it would be. The photographs are stunning and the book is full of them. There is virtually no repetition. A beautiful, inspirational tome for anyone who loves to set the table.
GLORIOUS!!.......2001-04-19
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. It is an absolutely gorgeous book for anybody interested in table settings of the most elegant kind. As well as spectacular photography of the most sumptuous crystal and china, the text is fascinating as it explains the history of table settings and of individual antiques.
As a person who is particularly interested in mixing and matching colored crystal and different china patterns on the table, I have found it to be of immense help and has given me even more courage to blend different styles together.
I will treasure this book forever.
Incredible Photography and Content!.......1999-11-11
This book is a must for those who truly enjoy a great table! The photos are magnificent and is beautifully written. I found that I learned a LOT by simply looking at the photos of china, crystal and glassware. From this book alone, I chose my sterling silver flatware and china patterns and have never regretted it! The book also gives ideas on simple room decorations as well - even though this is not a primary focus of the book itself. I really can't say enough good about this book......

Book Description
Teec Nos Pos (pronounced "teesh nos pahs") is the name of a trading post in the northeast corner of Arizona. Founded early in the twentieth century, it became one of the major centers from which Navajo rug designs were disseminated. Teec Nos Pos rugs are known for their complex geometric patterns, said to be influenced by Plains Indian designs and by Oriental rugs.
This useful catalog of an outstanding private collection of Teec Nos Pos textiles that has been exhibited at Arizona State University includes a history of the trading post with extensive information from the traders themselves about weavers and markets. The introduction by Andrew Nagen, a well-known textile dealer and curator, speculates on the origins of Teec Nos Pos designs and the psychology of the weavers.

"Have nothing in your house which you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."-William Morris
William Morris's wallpaper, carpets, and other textile designs are as popular today as they were when he created them in the late 1880s. One of the most influential figures in the history of the decorative arts, Morris (1834- 1896) challenged the mass-production methods of the industrial revolution and launched the revival of handcrafted work that became known as the Arts and Crafts movement. His firm, Morris & Co, created wood furniture, hand-woven tapestries, embroideries, printed textiles, woven fabrics, stained glass, tiles, and block-printed wallpapers, many of which are still being produced-by the same methods-more than a century later.
This new book shows how to incorporate Morris's designs and theories into contemporary interiors. Carefully chosen photographs show a wide variety of rooms using Morris designs, and include details of individual textile and wallpaper patterns. Inspired by nature and featuring soft, pure colors, Morris's designs are classics, still relevant and stylish in today's interiors.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photographs...............2005-06-03
I did not purchase this book, but I did check it out from my library. I have to say that this is a great book displaying William Morris' textile and wallpaper designs in contemporary settings.
I have seen books that use William Morris' designs and the rooms are not fresh, but look dated. You won't find that in this book. The photos are rich in detail and gives readers great decorating ideas.
If you are a collector of William Morris' wallpapers or fabrics, or if you love beautiful interiors that blend contemporary with traditional, then I think you will enjoy this book.

Showcase the "art" in Arts & Crafts Tile.......1997-08-21
The authors take their experience in British tile and present an indepth analysis of the work of William Morris. Although well-known for his other products, the authors bring the overshadowed tile work to light in text and pictures.
Although collectors will not be able to add most of the picturend pieces to their collection, the book can be. Unlike many books geared toward collectors, this book showcases many installation, many of which are in abbeys, and English manor homes. It is definitely not a "my collection book."
The indepth analysis of the artists who worked for Wm Morris should hold some information to even knowledgeable collectors

Book Description
This is the first full-scale history of two of the nation's most important courts: the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (often called the nation's "second most important court") and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The Court of Appeals has become the undisputed chief tribunal for administrative law in the United States and is the court to which Presidents often look when appointing Supreme Court justices. The District Court has become the principal venue for oversight of the executive branch of the federal government. Morris considers the factors that have influenced the development of each court; portrays the most influential of their judges; and considers the most important decisions and cases lines of each court.
