Book Description
Originally published in 1969 and now back in print after over a decade, Robert Coover's first novel instantly established his mastery. A coal-mine explosion in a small mid-American town claims ninety-seven lives. The only survivor, a lapsed Catholic given to mysterious visions, is adopted as a doomsday prophet by a group of small-town mystics. "Exposed" by the town newspaper editor, the cult gains international notoriety and its ranks swell. As its members gather on the Mount of Redemption to await the apocalypse, Robert Coover lays bare the madness of religious frenzy and the sometimes greater madness of "normal" citizens. The Origin of the Brunists is vintage Coover -- comic, fearless, incisive, and brilliantly executed. "A novel of intensity and conviction ... a splendid talent ... heir to Dreiser or Lewis." -- The New York Times Book Review; "A breathtaking masterpiece on any level you approach it." -- Sol Yurick; "[The Origin of the Brunists] delivers the goods . . . [and] says what it has to say with rudeness, vigor, poetry and a headlong narrative momentum." -- The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2001-09-29
Having read Coover's later books, I was rather skeptical if his earlier ones would be as good - and was pleasantly surprised. In fact, I would rate Coover's first novel as his best work: taut, earthy and powerful, it chronicles the rise and fall of a cult group called the Brunist (following the name of the so-called founder of the group, Giovanni Bruno) and how even a small, seemingly harmless and insignificant group of people can become potentially threatening to the larger community. But what I truly admire about this novel is the slow, subtle building of the narrative terror and hysteria. Coover is indeed a master of suspense and anti-climaxes, building up very tensed episodes to end them in slick, sometimes frustrating, bathos. But this only makes the novel more rewarding as the reader is never on solid ground. The prose continuously shifts and distabilises the reader's suppositions, making it almost impossible to stop reading (this is not an exaggeration). I highly recommend this electrifying novel and hope that it will reach a very wide audience.
Origin of the Brunists - B-grade people meet religion.......1997-11-05
Robert Coover's first novel, Origin of the Brunists, shows how he won so many awards for his poetry and short fiction. This is a book you won't forget. The book throws a strange group of definitely substandard people together, adds a set of bizarre events, shakes, and comes up with the most bizarre - but plausible - religion you have ever seen. Metaphysics, virtual Forteanism, downright stoicism, you name it, it gets thrown in and sort of works. The book is a study of the individuals, not the religion, but the religion serves to hold the people together. I haven't read this book in 15 years, and I'm aching to get another copy. If you like this book, try Coover's Universal Baseball Association - J. Henry Waugh, Prop., or a collection of his poetry and shortstuff, Pricksongs and Other Delights. At least one of these is in print.

Winnifred Gardner, engaged to be married in only three short months, is provided a dress rehearsal of sorts when she is asked to be the maid of honor at her best friend's wedding. Winnifred loves her fiancé, Paul, so why is she so attracted to Joseph Duggan, the best man? When Paul leaves the wedding reception early, Winn is left to dance with Joseph, and the attraction between the two is undeniable. As Paul spends more and more time at work rather than with Winn, he doesn't even notice when she begins to question their relationship. Winn is left to deal with the fact that she wants to get married--but to Joseph, not Paul. Harlequin Temptation, the line that helped launch the careers of such authors as Jayne Ann Krentz, Barbara Delinsky, and Judith McNaught, is known for witty, sensuous stories, and Spring Fancy is no exception.

Customer Reviews:
Remarkablely wonderful.......2007-06-26
Another must read. LaVyrle Spencer brings it home again with this love that is so real and meaningful..something each of us should look at.
A Love Triangle.......2007-02-16
Winnifred Gardner has a choice to make; does she stay with her computer nerd fiance Paul, or does she leave him for Joseph Duggan, a dashing man she met at her best friend's wedding?
Winnifred and Joseph are Maid of Honor and Best Man at their friends' wedding. Despite both of them knowing the bride and groom, Joseph and Winn had never met before. However, the sparks fly at the wedding rehersal. Winn finds herself drawn immediately to Joseph. He's the complete opposite of her fiance. Joseph likes to dance, jog, play racketball, and fix old cars while Paul spends hours staring at his computer (named Rita) instead of spending time with Winn.
Joseph enters Winn's life like a breath of fresh air. She feels alive again like she's never felt with Paul. There's only one problem; Winn and Paul's wedding is only three months away. Winn can't back out now; or can she? Winn is pulled in two directions as to what to do. Does she stay with Paul and have a life of financial security but little else, or does she drop Paul and allow her relationship with Joseph to grow? Joseph cannot offer the financial commitment, but he offers so much more.
Winn continues to make excuses for not seeing Joseph, but she cannot deny the feelings in her heart. Will Paul win out, or will Winn follow her heart and choose Joseph?
I read this book as a requirement for a Master's degree course. I've never read a romance novel before this one, but I found it to be quite good. The storyline is pretty standard; girl is engaged to boy, girl falls in love with another boy. But Spencer does a good job of describing each of the characters' feelings and the story develops very quickly. The character development is very good as well. From Paul, the computer nerd who seems to be more interested in his work than his fiance to Joseph, the simple but hard-working man and finally to Winn, who must choose between these two men, the characters really seem to come to life.
I'm not a big fan of the romance genre, but I did enjoy this book. I found myself developing a relationship with the characters, and I was eager to see who would end up with Winn. I don't know if I'll ever read another romance novel, but if I do, I hope its as good as this one is.
kind of boring story.......2005-12-05
i loved all the books by mrs.spencer so far.sorry to say that spring fancy was a disappointment to me.the story is kind of boring.the characters too.from page 1 the outcoming was very predictable.
all of mrs.spencer`s books i read were real page turners. this one sometimes layed on my bedside table for days and i just couldn`t bring myself up to continue!
An entertaining springtime novel.......2004-05-05
A very entertaining novel, although parts of it were difficult for me to fathom, particularly the reason why Winn continues to stay with Paul, even after beginning her romance with Joseph. However, this scenario makes for a wonderfully angst-filled romance, for those readers who enjoy tortured lovers! Joseph is endearing and a classical "good man" and is therefore easy to fall in love with. Winn is slightly more difficult to support, in my mind, but still inspires sympathy. Recommended for Spencer fans!
Tacky, Tacky, Tacky............2003-11-20
Oh how it breaks my heart to give such a low rating to a book by Spencer, but I just couldnt see it any other way. What an AWFUL story. I couldnt stand the characters. First we have Winn. She was so inconsistent and two faced I wanted to slap her. She would encourage the "hero" constantly, only to turn around in a huff 2 seconds later because she just couldnt do that to her fiance...oh, and the "hero", Jo Jo..yes, thats right, Jo Jo..oh my. His name is Only the beginning of his problems. He is decribed as having FEMININE curly hair and he is so annoying and childish I just couldnt take it anymore. Slap these two together and wrap them up in a stupid storyline with the most ridiculous dialogue and you have "Spring Fancy". So, why 2 stars?...Its a Lavyrle Spencer. Only my love for this author kept me from rating it a 1.

Surprise, Surprise by Annette Broadrick. The mysterious appearance of babies on Dane Ross's doorstep had him calling his secretary for help - pronto! But with her arrival, love came knocking, with surprises of its own in store.
Chance Encounter by Lass Small. Attorney Darwin Moore was only interested in blondes, thank you. So who was this sunlit vision gazing across the ocean, all alone, nearly naked, and brazenly brunette???
Simon Says by Kasey Michaels. Simon "All Business" Prescott had no time for his injured mother's quick-witted nurse. But with mother and nature conspiring against him, Simon had little to say in the matter.

Book Description
Discover who’s who and what’s what in the Star Wars universe with this beautifully illustrated guide–now in full color for the first time.
When it comes to extraterrestrial life-forms, there’s more to science fiction’s most famous galaxy than just Jawas, Wookiees, Ewoks, and Hutts. From the skylanes of Coruscant to the worlds of the Outer Rim, an untold number of species populate those planets far, far away. And if you confuse Gungans with Gamorreans, or don’t know a bantha from a tauntaun, you definitely need the in-depth data that only this revised, expanded, and updated guide can deliver.
This comprehensive overview includes beings from all six of the classic movies–plus the novels, cartoon series, comics, and video games. It’s an even bigger cross section of species than what you’ll find in the Mos Eisley cantina. And each entry, from acklay to Zabrak, from amphibians to vacuum-breathers, features everything you need to know, including
• complete physical description and official designation, so you can tell your sentients from your non-sentients, and your humanoids from your insectoids
• homeworld: from dry and dusty Tatooine, stormy and waterlogged Kamino, to arctic Hoth, and countless other strange and varied worlds
• phonetic pronunciation: Askajian, H’nemthe, Iktotchi, Ssi-ruu, and Xexto/Quermian aren’t as easy to say as they are to, er, spell
• notable appearance: a listing of one of the more significant appearances of each species in the teeming Star Wars storyline
Plus, this brand-new edition includes a glossary of crucial descriptive terms and a completely original, full color illustration for each of more than one hundred individual species. It’s a big galaxy, and someone has to organize it. Count on Star Wars®: The New Essential Guide to Alien Species–and don’t leave your homeworld without it.
Customer Reviews:
Expanded Second Edition.......2007-01-12
Now how are you going to understand the joke unless you know these species. And how are you going to know these species without the guide book.
This guide book is a description of the alien species found in the Star Wars. Generally each species gets two pages. On the left hand side wil be a drawing illustrating a representative of the species. On the tight is a description of the species, their home habitat, and other pertinent information about them. Overall, about a hundred species are so described, with another few dozen more given a third of a page or so of description.
This is the second edition of the book: revised, expanded and with color images of the alien species as requested by the readers of the earlier edition.
Of particular interest is the entry on 'Humans.' It remarks that we are really quite wide spread across the galazy. I guess that mean we've still got a chance.
New Essential Guide To Alien Species.......2007-01-12
Glad to see the newer version. They did leave out the Selkath and Rakata from Knights Of The Old Republic. Hopefully they will be added to the 3rd version (if there is one).
Star Wars .......2007-01-11
My husband is a BIG Star Wars fan! He received this book along with the updated Guide to Droids. He has all the Essential Guides & likes to keep up to date on the latest Aliens. I would recommend this book to add to your collection of Star Wars Books. Kind of like a "program" guide
Incomplete.......2006-12-20
Now while I did enjoy the new info, pics, and the fact that it has finally been released, it is still lacking. Some species should have been depicted and further explored such as the Muun, Gen'Dai, Sith (species), Vagaari, and the like. It was lacking.
THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE.......2006-11-03
If you've ever wondered what the differences were between a tauntaun and a bantha, well than this is the book for you! Lavishly illustrated with complete bios and histories on the denizens of the STAR WARS universe, you'll spend hours exploring a galaxy far, far away!

Customer Reviews:
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Gyn/ecology : the metaethics of radical feminism
by Mary Daly is an interesting, if a bit on the whacky side of feminist texts. If you have no interest in feminist rhetoric, or any of that sort of thing, you don't need to waste any of your time with this, although it is certainly presenting a different viewpoint.
Mary Daly text review.......2007-09-02
This is outdated and may have been thought-provoking in the 1960's, but feminism and domestic violence as disciplines have progressed far beyond Daly's rantings, however colorful.
Excellent scholarship and fun to read.......2007-07-16
We used this book as a textbook in a class I took in Graduate school, and it made me think more than just about any other book I read in grad school. Intellectual, but not dry. It made me want to read all her other books; they're good too but this one is my favorite because it kind of functions like a textbook, not that it's dry but because it gives a kind of broad survey of history. It's a great exercise in learning to think outside the box.
Needed Now More Than Ever.......2007-03-12
I first read Mary Daly;s works in the early 90's - I revisit regularly to maintain the perspective, so that I will not be sucked into the manufacture of consent for such belitteling and anti-woman activities such as "Hunting for Bambi" or believe that female genital mutilation is a "tradition" that must be preserved. If you care about the future - this book is an intellectual and spiritual watershed. Highly Reccommended.
GREAT!GREAT!.......2005-09-10
Thie was required reading for a class I took and it is an amazing book! Mary Daly is well known in the feminist arena. This book helps show why.I am dismayed to see othe readers (men and religous freaks) who brush the book aside without recognizing it's importance. Christianity is not the all it's cracked up to be and men have been trying to squash women since the dawn of time. That is a truth. God ( whoever you think her to be) has little to do with it. OPEN your eyes, and read this book!

A Book On Watt Pottery.......2006-08-28
This book is very informative. It gives one an idea of the value of a particular piece of Watt Ware. It lists all the different styles that were created. I keep it in my car in case I find a piece of Watt Ware in an antique store and wish to see how the store's price compares with the value listed in the book. It is a very good resource to have on hand.
Watt Pottery.......2000-06-19
A Wonderful Book that's packed full of Photos of this Lovely Pottery, as well as the History behind this Sweet Pottery! A Must Have if you collect Or Deal in Watt Pottery!
Watt Pottery Identification Guide.......2000-06-06
This is a good basic book for collectors new to Watt Ware. The photographs are excellent and help in identification. It is a well organized book and begins with a brief history of the Watt company and has a chapter devoted to each major pattern. At the back of the book is a section covering different company markings with photographs and drawings. The book was published in 1993, however, the value guide was updated in 1998 and has proven to be accurate in my experience. What this book lacks is a greater history of the company. It would have been nice to know a little more about it with some photos of manufacturing and such. For the price of this book it is a good value...a good start.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for the avid folder.......2002-01-28
The first half of this book is completly narrative. It explains origami in a way no other book I've read has. By showing the traditional bases as variations on a theme and then extending that theme Engel shows origami creators (not just folders) how to overcome the limitations in a piece of paper. The ties to music, fractals, geometry, the act of creation, the boundry of science and art, and computers really gets you thinking. The narrative is nice for the beginner and the advanced folder.
After the narrative is the more traditional diagrams for folding models. Except for a few these models are ONLY for the advanced folder. Some models include (all folded from one sheet of square or dollar bill paper without cutting) a 10 legged crab with antenna and larger forclaws, a horse and rider, a kangaroo with a smaller kangaroo in its pouch, Octopus with 8 tenticles. There are also some only moderatly advanced such as fish, reindeer, elephant, yacht, penguin, hummingbird, etc.
Among Origami books I have read the only one to hold a candle to this is Origami Omnibus. Both are stellar works, but this is my favorite of the two.
Engel's unique perspective brings out the art in origami.......2000-04-20
Never before have I seen an origami book that brings in so much art, design, and mathematics. Not only does Engel make incredible and very challenging origami, but his sense of design makes it a delight to see come about. His first 81 pages are introduction and theoretical discussion of origami and the design concepts behind the artform. While he may be a bit esoteric at times, his discussion is quite interesting as he delves into fields ranging from music to geometry to architecture. The models show wonderful 3-D realism for the most part and will pose a challenge to all but very advanced folders (and if you still need a challenge use smaller paper). I especially enjoyed the octopus, squid and knight on horseback.

Customer Reviews:
Just like the original ... and less!.......2003-04-29
Brooke de Ocampo has hied herself to London and produced a book that does for the brilliant, educated, and exceptionally wealthy young elite of that city what her earlier title did for their counterparts in New York. The difference this time, unfortunately, is that she decided to let other Bright Young Things do the writing as well as open their homes and pose for photographs. And so while the writing in the original BYT was relatively unobjectionable celebrity journalism, a good deal of the writing in BYT London doesn't even rise to that level. On the other hand, the introduction by Nicholas Coleridge runs rings around its BYT counterpart by William Norwich, if only because it's so much less gushing in its praise for the people being profiled.
Apart from the writing, though, this book is a lot like the first one. Beautiful people, beautiful homes, beautiful children, beautiful photos. The selection of people covered seems, if anything, slightly broader than that in BYT. Whatever your reaction to the first book, I imagine it'll be about the same to this one ... unless, perhaps, you happen to be, or be related to, one of the people featured in it.

Orrefors at 100.......2000-05-25
This is probably meant to be the definitive text on Orrefors glass, as it was written with the cooperation of, if not at the behest of, the company. That has both it's good and downsides. On the positive end there are lots of archival photos, original drawings and much behind-the-scenes information. The downside is that it reeks of boosterism and focuses in on the company's current production without any sense of critical analysis.
The book is a beautiful coffee table type with gorgeous photos and much information which will probably prove very useful for someone just exploring the world of Swedish glass. There is an emphasis on art in photography, which is really nice, but eventually proves to be a draw back, as there are multiple pictures of the same vase, while many other techniques are not covered. Also there is much space spent considering the careers of the current designers and no where near enough on their classic ones. Personally I am less interested in the company' centennial commemorative output than I am on their earlier innovations.
One wishes there was far more analysis on what were positive and negative developments within Orrefors' designs. Again, I would also like to know why certain decisions were made - for instance, why the company decided to discontinue popular designs they had produced for decades and produce only the work of current designers. That they did it is significant, why would be even more interesting to know. The book is said to have a definitive table to help in the deciphering of codes on the bottom of their handmade glassware. I have never been able to use it with any certainty. I do not know whether it is a problem of clarity, mistranslation or the sheer number of variables in the pieces produced.
This all may sound like a negative review, but perhaps I was anticipating the volume too greatly. It is beautiful, and easy to read. There is much information in it, and it bears up to a second or third reading. I do recommend the volume, I just hope that it is followed by another more definitive one that clearly documents the company's developments, perhaps less artfully.

Book Description
If you ever saw one of W.O. Mitchell's public readings you will know why they were described as unforgettable. Unruly white hair flying, fist raised, voice husky or thundering, eyes wide in innocent astonishment at a double entendre raising a laugh, W.O. Mitchell did not give readings from his work; he performed them. In contrast to the lonely life of the writer, he loved "the immediate thrust of a live audience as it responds to story magic," and the audiences loved him, laughing until they were sore.
This wonderful selection of 31 pieces shows his writing at its best, while the in-performance photographs catch some of the charm of the man whose own character was perhaps his finest creation.
Some pieces come from his novels, such as Who Has Seen the Wind and The Vanishing Point. We also hear the distinctive voices of both Jake and the Kid. "Melvin Arbuckle's First Course in Shock Therapy" is here, as are "The Day I Sold Lingerie in a Prairie Whore House" and the sad tale of "Santa Comes to Shelby." Old favourites are mixed with many new pieces, some never before published in book form, such as "Stopping Smoking" and "The Day I Caught Syphilis" (at the age of twelve). There are also serious pieces on censorship, and, finally, his inspiring 1996 speech in Winnipeg to the Writers' Union of Canada that moved his audience to tears. This book is a worthy tribute to a wonderful man.
Customer Reviews:
A little slow but interesting........1999-06-11
At first I wanted to beat myself with a wooden mallet, then I started to find the stories almost amazing but not, you know! Mitchell writes about things that don't matter and yet he gives it so much passion. He is definitely a hurting writer, but a trying one.
A Canadian Treasure.......1997-09-10
W.O. Mitchell has been a huge figure in Canadian writing for a number of years. His books are routinely assigned in schools from grade school to university. He evokes the Canadian Praries so as to make that the cultural homeland of all Canadians. So it is with great pleasure that I recommend this collection of stories. Written to mimic a night of his storytelling, they weave a magical web. I would also recommend the forthcoming audio book based on A Night With W.O. Mitchell. It will feature him reading his own compostions and promises to be excellent.
