This was a great book.I just wish jasmine could have been stronger.Like she was in wild jasmine.But other then that it was a great book.

A Good Read.......2000-06-16

Although she is no Skye O'Malley, Jasmine is her own person and commands excitement nonetheless. This sequel to Wild Jasmine was predictable, yet exciting. Bertrice Small writes with such lush detail and vivid characters that I feel as if I am a participant. I enjoyed this book. (Some parts better than others.) Someone who picks it up before reading the other Skye O'Malley books, might get a little lost. Those who have read the series must remember that Jasmine is not Skye, and enjoy this character for who she is.

Within a few pages of the book I was already crying.Mrs. small is clever & witty. I've read all her books about the o'malley saga and the other related books. All are masterpieces. I've read all at least three times. The Kadin started it all really and Skye was added in . Darling Jasmine was a bit brutal and rushed and it's not my favorite, but the ending was beautiful and done only as Mrs. Small could do it. Sad & poignant the ending stays with you and brings all the other sagas together at once. BRAVO!

I have read ALL the books written by Bertrice Small, and I find them very fasinating. Ms. Small writes in details that I have never experienced in reading in any book that I have picked up in my lifetime. Ms. Small has a way of captivating her readers and placing them in the book itself. I am eagerly awaiting her next book, and like I said I have all 23 books that Bertrice Small has written, and I have read them all twice so far. I congratulate a wonderful Author, and may she never stop writing.

Oh Dear.......2000-01-22

In absolute terms, this book is still worth reading (which is why it's getting two stars.) Small's worst pretty stacks up to everyone else's best. That being said, it's sad to read this and remember her masterworks (mistressworks?) such as Skye O'Malley, Kadin, and Beloved. At her best, Small had written books that were genuinely literary. With Darling Jasmine, and the last several in general, she gives the impression of simply going through the motions.

Lapidus has assembled a set of authors to write this nicely done summation of the Muslim world. Well accompanied by numerous photos of current Islamic architecture. From Spain to Arabia and further. Plus, there are also centuries-old illustrations of important personages. Notwithstanding the Koranic prohibition against the depiction of the human form. Apparently, in many Muslim societies, that was not strictly adhered to, especially for rulers who wanted their visages immortalised.

The book covers both the history and the current state of these societies. Several authors appear to be Muslim, and certainly the tone of the book is strongly sympathetic towards Muslims. Though the book also makes us aware that there is a great variety of opinions and customs amongst Muslims. Not a monolithic bloc.

Plus, the long tradition of Muslim scholarship is explained. It helped preserve knowledge when Europe fell into the Dark Ages.

Wonderful Intro to Islamic Culture and Belief.......2004-01-13

In an age of prejudice towards the Islamic faith, it is nice to see a more accurate and even-handed book covering the Muslim world. This book gives an excellent introduction, going into depth on how the west has viwed the Islamic world, and vice-versca. Then it goes onto the first chapter, where it discusses pre-Islamic Arabia, the life of Mohammad, the Rashidun, the schism between Sunni and Shi'a, and the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties. This chapter is especially interesting in laying the framework for the foundations of the Islamic world, as well as the spread of Islam and Arabic culture, and later conversion of non-Arab peoples (most notably the Persians). In the next chapter, the Islamic world from 1000 to 1500 AD is covered, when Islam had spread across the Middle East, west to Spain and west Africa and east towards India and Central Asia. This chapter covers many interesting subjects, such as the Fatimid dynasty, the Crusades, the Mongols, Byzantium and the Turks, and Islamic states in East Asia and Africa. The third chapter covers the period from 1500 to 1800 AD, a period of both great achievements and decline. The Persian, Mongol and Turkish powers are mentioned (such as the Safavids, Mughals and Ottomans), alongside mention of Islam in Africa and elsehwere in Asia (mainly China and Southeast Asia).

The subsequent chapter focuses on the 1800s to the present day, and a growing western presence in Islamic lands. This chapter shows how European powers carved up Islamic lands (the French in Syria and north/west Africa, the Brits in Iraq, Palestine, Egypt and South Asia, the Italians in north Africa, Russians in central Asia, etc), and how Islamicist reformer movements arose because of this. Mention is also made of non-colonized states (such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran), and of the emergence of independant Islamic states. The second section of the book goes more into cultural studies, delving into economies, trade routes and social structure within the Islamic world. Mention is made of both historical traderoutes and interconnectedness in the Islamic world, stretching from Morocco to Indonesia, and of modern economies in predominantly Muslim states. In chapter seven, the book explores learning in Islamic societies. Mention is made of the high degree of literacy in Islam, and the many great scientific achievements in medicine, astronomy and mathematics. Mention is also made of the impact of the west on Islamic learning. This is followed by a chapter on the arts in the Islamic world, ranging from calligraphy to architecture to classical Arabic music (including mention of legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kalthum) and everything in between. This is an excellent chapter for understanding and appreciating Islamic culture.

The book closes out with a conclusion on Islam in the modern world, relationships with the west, the spread of Islam to every country in the world and crises in Bosnia, Palestine, Kashmir and Chechnya. It also has a wonderful timeline covering various Islamic dynasties around the world and a short glossary of Arabic terms. Its quite a nice book for getting to understand some of the basic history and culture of the Islamic world and some of the current issues facing the Islamic world. For the purposes of this book, by the way, the Islamic world counts as any country where the majority of the population is Muslim, not just self-declared Islamic states (which would be limited to Iran, Pakistan, Mauritania and such). Hence it covers almost all of the Middle East, north Africa, Central Asia and much of South Asia, as well as Bosnia, Albania, parts of west and east Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and so forth. In fact, the book makes a point of examining Islam in South Asia, Africa, China and elsewhere beyond the Middle East. It also includes many illustrations and maps of the Islamic world. Hence its an invaluable aid for anyone, Muslim or non-Muslim, in understanding the wonderful history and culture of Islam. However, it doesn't go into depth on beliefs or specific cultures (such as Arabs, Persians, Malay, Mongols and whatnot), so you would need to look elsewhere for that.

This is a great cookbook with a lot of German influenced Recipes. The Spaetzle and Rouladen (=beef rolls) are to die for. And the beautiful pictures that acompany almost every recipe will make your mouth water.

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. I've had it for a few years and am always pleased with the way the recipes turn out. Beautiful pictures and accessible degrees of difficulty. Try Basic Parties and Basic Cooking, both part of the same series.

The book also deals concisely with the techniques used in the making of the Japanese sword and the associated terminology. In addition to weapons from the V&A's own collections and unusual prints showing graphic depictions of swords in action, illustrations include comparative material from other museums such as Japan's Tokyo National Museum which has one of the best and most well documented collections of Japanese swords in the world.

It's about time someone wrote a book like this! This book covers everything from the weapons, to the samurai themselves and their daily lives. A must for any library! Hours and hours of facinating reading, and a wonderful reference manual for nihonto enthusiasts!

The Soul of the Samurai covers the major periods well..........2001-01-24

Although the book is short (122 pages) it covers the major periods of the Japanese sword well. There is a short section on the making of the Japanese sword as well as basic terminology. If you are looking for more information on the making of a katana buy Kapp and Yoshihara's "The Craft of the Japanese Sword". The book goes through each period, Heian (794-1185), the Kamakura period (1185-1333), the Muromachi & Momoyama periods (1333-1600), the Edo period (1600-1868) and the Meiji Restoration and beyond. The book does not deal with Gendaito (modern swords). It does have 68 illustrations including several nice color woodblock prints and a lot of black and white photos of old blades from the imperial collection and the Toyko National Museum. The book is not really a reference book, buy John Yumoto's "The Samurai Sword" and Fuller & Gregory's "Military Swords of Japan 1868-1945", or Sato & Earle's "The Japanese Sword- A Comprehensive Guide" first if you are looking for a reference guide. The book has very little on tsubas or fittings. It does have a glossary and an index. If you are looking for a little more history and have the reference books, want to see some great blades and fine wood block prints than this is the book for you! It is a good read. Enjoy!

As an avid collector of cookbook and decorating books, I found this little book to be merely mediocre. The book sounds nice and cozy but I only found about 2 photos that I felt were helpful.

Since I am a very visual person, this little book was a big disappointment. Save your money; get it at the library or check it out at your local bookstore.

The concept of nooks appeals to the child in all of us. The ideas are quaint but I did not find the book particularly inspiring. Buy if you are a decorating book junkie as I am but do not have high expectations.

This book is small, with pictures of cozy nooks taken in different rooms (kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc...). It is not a glossy showcase book to leave on the living room table or a design course with stringent guidelines. But for someone who's looking for ideas and inspiration, it is a great little book. The photos are so cute they make you want to step right in and cuddle up with a cup of tea. I have never found another book that collected so many photos of nooks under the same cover.

There isn't very much of value in this small book which sounded great but didn't deliver on its promise. The book's size itself is a negative (for the money) and the pictures inside don't look like what the cover promises. The ideas are same-old, same-old. Pretty disappointing.

The extra large size and interesting illustrations in this coloring book have made this my children's favorite for many months.This is not your typical throw away coloring book.My kids actually enjoy coming back to an already started drawing and adding to it. The extra large size also gives us a chance as a family to draw together on one page.As a mom of two pre-schoolers I highly recommend it.

This is a good book for a starter. If you are just getting into liking ancient Egypt this is a book for you.It tells of the gods and what they did and other cool things about them. Hey, I don't wanna tell ya the whole shebang about 'cause I think you should read it for yourself. I f you are just entering the knowledge of the Ancient Egyptians you should learn of their religion and of their gods and way of life. When I first read this as a child I didn't understand it and I didn't really like it. Later I rediscovered it through quotes in "the massage is the message" by McLuhan. I read it again and discovered new meaninings, new dimensions. It is amazing how many different readings this masterpiece of surrealism may have. BUT ... first of all it is a real pleasure reading it. Attractive illustrations and funny poems make it equally accessible to children. My all time favourite and definetely the smartest book written for children!

If you are a Mellencamp fan, you will want to have this book!

This is not a gushy fan book, but rather a no warts hidden biography.
