Book Description
An extraordinary picture of life in France during the critical eight days before the signing of the fateful Munich Pact and the subsequent takeover of Czechoslovakia in September 1938. Translated from the French by Eric Sutton.

why appeasement doesn't work.......2005-01-29
this is sartre's 2nd book in the "roads to freedom" series. i stongly suggest that you read them in order as one builds off the other. i liked this book alot, but it was not as powerful as "the age of reason"(see my review).
the books tells of the 5 days preceeding the munich agreement when all of europe was gearing up for war. a general knowledge of that historical moment would be very beneficial in understanding the book. unlike the 1st book which follows the traditional storytelling mode, this book jumps from scene to scene with great rapidity. these jumps can occur in the middle of a paragraph and sometimes in the middle of a sentence. this kaleidoscopic effect can be frustrating at first, but as you get comfortable with it and the various characters and story lines, it is very easy to catch the jumps. as a matter fact, it actually gives the storyline a much greater sense of movement and action than without it.
the title comes from the fact that the munich agreement does not really prevent the war as it was first thought it would do by the signators. it simply put off the inevitable. as a matter of fact, europe's giving up of czechoslovakian territory to hitler may have actually emboldened him to grab more territory, thereby starting the war. appeasement didn't work then either.
the individual stories cover a myriad of issues from cowardice to duty from both men's and women's perspectives. since it involves mainly the french, it even gives some historical insight into why the french are the way they are today.
both of these books show sartre as an excellent story teller who incorporates challenging and thoughtful themes that keep you pondering long after you have turned the last page.
There is no fog in Paris in this novel.......2002-11-09
However one disagrees with Sartre's philosophy, his Marxism, and his anti-Americanism, it is difficult to argue against his personal involvement in what he believed in. Sartre was no pipe-smoking, arm-chair academic content to let others do his fighting. He was always there on the front-lines, perhaps bellicose in his utterings, but always visible. An issue he disagreed with never experienced-his-absence, and Sartre did not hesitate to also be a novelist-philosopher, and as such, he showed more moral courage than perhaps any 20th century philosopher. The equality of idea and action was perhaps an axiom for Sartre, and his life was definitely an empirical validation of such.
Definitely introspective to extremes, this novel, the second in his series "The Roads to Freedom", is the ultimate portrayal of life in France before the Munich Pact and the takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1938. As a reader, it is easy to get trapped in the stream of consciousness approach that Sartre takes in his novel. Each character is not to be found alone, but immersed in the quagmire of panic, and for some, exhiliration, at the prospect of wartime conflict. The characters define themselves by the instant, their attitudes caught in the flux, that flux impossible to arrest, but their choices completely free nonetheless. Their individuality is sometimes robbed by the gaze of the other, but captured again by choice. Ideology has a short time scale for them.
Sartre does not really shout at the reader through his characters. But their predicament is believable. Their anxiety sometimes familiar, but they also have a perhaps hidden optimism. They know it is themselves, and no other, that determines their future history. The (burden?) of choice is with them always, and they understand fully the power of consequences. But choice works for them as well as against. This makes the appreciation of these characters easy and familiar.
Munich, Sartre-style.......2002-06-26
This is the sequel to "The Age of Reason", and I thought it was by far the better book.
It's the story of Munich 1938, when war seemed inevitable as the crisis over Hitler's territorial demands on Czechoslovakia reached its peak. Sartre examines the feelings of a wide range of people through a time period of just over a week, feelings ranging from fear of a repeat of the 1914-1918 War, to the excitement of others who looked forward to conflict as a means of finally giving a meaning to their lives.
Sartre's technique is to skip swiftly from scene to scene, and location to location, doing so sometimes within a sentence. It takes concentration on the part of the reader to follow this, but I found it increased the pace of the story, and gave a sort of kaleidoscopic effect - conflicting and contrasting attitudes are exposed more easily, as are the differences between social classes, and even between nationalities.
The book is a damning indictment of appeasement, and of France and Britain's lack of courage in the face of the rise of fascism. But at the same time as condemning the appeasers, Sartre is sensitive enough to understand why people felt the way they did, and that includes the appeasers themselves - perhaps the appeasers too were trapped by the ambiguity of their own and their public's opinions, lacking the freedom to do what was right.
The add to the praise, the book's ending is great too.
the collective consciousness........2002-02-13
The only thing I will comment (because I do not give away the book) is the writing style. If you are expecting "Age of Reason" part II, then you will not get what you were looking for...the writing style or mode is very different. The way the book is put together is there are many characters all in different parts of French territory in different walks of life, ages, sexes, etc. Often times when you are reading you will lose sight of where one character speaks or thinks and the next one. you will have to go line by line in the same paragraph, where a sentence ina paragraph represents a though of a different character and that character will not be identified...but you will know...but it becomes irrelevant who says or feels what because it is about the collective consciousness of french people in the midst of war...and this is the biggest success of the book is that this technique so succesful and masterfully implemented. It makes the book feel like events are happening so quickly and things are moving so fast which lends to the urgency of the situation in France. I feel like its a forrest fire...that starts with a brush and picks up momentum until its raging! There are new characters in this book and he has carried the old characters over. Please do yourself a favor and do not read the series out of order.
What is war?.......2001-04-25
What is war other than as it exists in the minds of the people who experience it? Sartre explains that in order to locate it, one would have to be everywhere at once, which is precisely what this novel permits its readers. This text, which is a complex weaving of the psychological states and experiences of a diversity of people who are forced to anticipate and conceptualize war, sheds light not only on the events leading to WWII, but the events which shaped Sartre as a writer and philosopher. A novel that could be read a thousand times, it contextualizes existentialism as a philosophy and serves as a framework for understanding the evolution and existence of existentialist thought.

I Love This Book!!!!!.......2002-01-03
This book had to be my favorite from the Tyler series. I read the first chapter of it from the previous book, and I could not wait to read it! It really was a great book and I suggest that anyone who has read the Tyler books should certainly read this one.
ARROWPOINT hits the Target!.......2000-02-10
This was my favorite of the entire series: "Welcome to Tyler". It was well written, and the characters were so easy to like, and their story was very captivating! Their personalities came alive under the skillful writing style of Ms. Ellison.
Excellent romance-mystery rolled in one. Hometown feeling........1999-10-12
This series most be read from Whirlwind to Loveknot. The mystery blends through all twelve books in series. All seven author's are excellent. You get the feeling you really could find this town and meet these people. Each book is a story in it's own but they all connect. I was impressed with this series. First books I've ever wanted to read a second time after finding them in storage. As my nineteen year-old says "awesome"!

Book Description
A thorough history of the weapons and tools our prehistoric ancestors used to survive, this book reveals a world that will fascinate anyone interested in outdoor skills, ancient weapons, or anthropology. Thomas Wilson explains the many types of arrowheads, spears, and knives used by the peoples of the Paleolithic period across Western Europe and the early days of America. He details the materials from which these tools were made, how and where they were manufactured, and the purposes for which they were crafted—from hunting and cutting to scraping and grinding. Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of photographs and drawings of these tools, including microscopic details of the flint and other stones from which they were crafted, this is a rare look into what seems like mankind’s not-so-distant past.

outdated, rehash repulication of pre 1900 views.......2007-06-25
Very disappointed with this, it is a republication of a pre 1900 tome on lithics, which contains not a thing new or interesting. Mostly line drawings which are not of quality. Major disappointment, waste of my time and money.
Really Absorbing.......2007-05-26
This treasure of a book is a huge survey of prehistoric stone weapons, amazingly rendered in what must be hundreds of artfully detailed line drawings.
The wonderful Helen Marshall Thomas frames the material perfectly.
Besides having hours of fun with it, I came away with the strange sense of empathy and understanding for the prehistoric peoples who fashioned these early stone tools.
Amazing.......2007-04-04
I am so happy I bought this book. The line drawings are breathtaking. The writing is fascinating. This is truly a relic that I'm glad has been brought back to life for historians, collectors, etc.

How does Hugo-winner Timothy Zahn turn an otherwise straightforward SF page-turner into something truly interesting? With one of the oldest shticks in the book: the good ol' black-hole-that-spits-out-quantum-particles-of-human-goodness trick.
Of course, that's not exactly an old sci-fi shtick, but the essence of it (and its effect) is: the ever-clever Zahn has taken a very cool idea--what if there were quantum particles (or whatever) that compelled people to act ethically--and then explored the impact that might have, in this case on a society and its internal and external interactions. The particles in question are called "angels," and the interstellar alliance known as the Empyrean has been blessed with Angelmass, the eponymous black hole that emits them. The greedy, Earth-based Pax empire sees these angels as a brainwashing alien invasion and threatens to invade the Empyrean itself to set things straight. Thrown into the fray to explicate the implications are a bumbling but earnest Pax scientist-spy, a pretty young grifter, a brother-sister pair of grizzled space vets, and an Empyrean High Senator who fears the complacency that angels have bred into his society.
Fast, fun, and thought-provoking, Angelmass combines Star Wars-style action (which Zahn knows well) with enough substance to satisfy a more serious reading. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Timothy Zahn, renowned for his bestselling Cobra and Black Collar series, and for his hugely successful Star Wars trilogy, takes a giant step with a novel sure to thrill science fiction readers everywhere. Mankind has colonized many planets, most under the control of Earth and its Pax Comitus. One group of colonies, the Empyrean, has resisted the Pax, and now the Pax has sent a spy, Kostas, to try to alter the balance of power there.

A(completewasteoftime)ngelmass.......2006-06-14
Honestly, complete rubbish. Paper thin characters and an even thinner plot. I picked this up in the library; had I paid for this I would be thoroughly pissed.
A Great Idea - that falls apart........2006-01-22
Zahn has some great ideas here, but unfortunately the entire story falls apart about 2/3 of the way through the book.
Zahn does some of his best characterization here - only Manta's Gift surpasses it. Several plot threads are introduced, one featuring an intellectual thrust into the role of a spy, another with a rogueish young thief on the run, and another with a politician who suspects something is amiss with the "angels" used in politics - small, harvested particles of "pure good."
Unfortunately, all these likable characters and the clever concept are completely wasted. Several prominent plot threads are virtually dismissed as irrelevant about 2/3 of the way through the book, when Zahn apparently realized he wasn't sure where he was going. The entire ending sequence resolves very few of the initial questions raised, and the answers that it does give are so far-fetched as to break almost all of the book's believability. It's quite a shame, because up until this very-rushed ending sequence, the book is quite enjoyable.
As A Casual Sci-Fi Reader RatesIt..........2004-07-22
I was extremely impressed wit this work and loved every minute of it until the bittersweet ending. Not being a science buff or someone who could tell if Zahn's use of Science was accurate or impossible, I was thoroughly dazzled by the content of this book. Even if just for some of the scientific thought process, this book was wonderful in my mind. I always liked Zahns analysis of situations and the infinite flow of possibilities he can throw out. And here, scientific theories are popped out as easy as Pezz.
It is mostly a story about two people, one: an academic, scientist who is talked into being a Spy in enemy territory (a handful of systems known as the Empyrean) and to research Angels. These subatomic particles are the essence of Good, which bring about calm, reason and honesty in those who wear them (mainly officials in government, military leaders and such). He, along with his nation, the Pax, believe Angels are alien invaders or a plot thereof to remove human suspicion and allow for an easy takeover. He's being sent to find a way to save them, by learning as much as he can about the Angels himself.
Second: a 16 year old girl who is running. She's an underground con-artist and thief who is trying to get away from the obsessed and insane person who taught her the tricks of the trade. She ends up encountering an Angel while trying to make a supposedly profitable "score" and ends up trying to fight against herself with either letting the Angel reform her or running from the Angel. She's also at conflict with herself over what she really wants and needs in her life.
There's also characters battling their own moral problems, a senator who's innocent and seemingly noble action starts to flower into a mess he cannot control, a general at war with politics and a pair of Angel hunters who just seem to smile at every problem over a hot cup of tea. They are all thrown into a pot and shaken around with the threat of an invasion and an enemy that comes from the least expected place.
It is a wonderful story that I'm still in love with, but I'm also easy to please. Zahn's book Heir to the Empire was the first book I read as a child that was not assigned to me as homework. I've been a fan every since.
This book has this type of basic plot line to it. Someone thrown into a place, isn't all that prepared for it, is actually there for a reason he doesn't quite know and has to figure it out for himself and then save the place where he was thrown into. If you have read Manta's Gift by Zahn you'll also note this is a very similar plot line... and the two books were written back to back (variety?). Manta's Gift features a person who basically lost their life in an accident and was talked into being "born" again as an alien, the Qanska. He's actually there for a reason he doesn't know yet and must face a threat against his new "people". Same basic idea.
Though Angelmass plays this out on a pretty large scale and has the issue of What is Good and Evil? As these Angels supposedly are the stuff Good is made of... it talks about that. Manta's Gift has the issue of What is Humanity? As a human is born again as an alien and becomes one of them, what does it mean to be human? Both stories also have a very annoying villain character, the Adjutor Telthorst and Liadof of the Five Hundred, they have someone aligned with the annoying villain but definitely not on the same thought pattern, Faraday and Lleshi, and a leader type character on the other end who's trust must be earned, Forsythe and Latranesto (though they differ highly in personality).
Still I loved this book even though I read itafter reading Manta's Gift and kept going "Wow this is a lot like Manta's Gift." I really liked the personalities and the way that the characters thought, because half the time they were trying to fool themselves more than fool everyone else and you knew it throughout the entire thing. I recommend it to anyone who is like me, a casual sci-fi fan, star wars fan, gamer and hopeless romantic that just eats of any hint of affection between main characters.
"It is a Serious Sci-Fi novel sneakily posing as a Golden Age thrill ride." -Locus
Good Character Development.......2004-03-01
Excellent development of the main characters. I cared about them enough to be concerned for them--I didn't want to see them get hurt, etc. In fact, I really liked them. So the minor tactical twists in the plot that put the characters in tough situations kept me interested--chase scenes, and the like. But the overall plot was just O.K. Characters: 5 stars, Overall plot: 3 stars. Chandris is a bit like Skywalker's wife, no?
In my opinion, this book is much better than Icarus Hunt, but not quite as entertaining as his Star Wars novels.
Interesting.......2004-02-07
Angelmass was not really at all what I was expecting. It was very interesting and forced me to ask specific questions about the character's actions. For a very long part of the book very little action happened - I happen to like it when an author writes non-action sequences and still makes them entertaining (which Zahn certainly did).
It's an excellent book.

Book Description
This new book presents an important part of Anchor Hocking's glass production, the dark "Forest Green" styles made from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. The history and variety of Forest Green glassware is precisely documented here, covering seventeen established patterns, many boxed sets, and a myriad of accessory pieces such as relish sets, ashtrays, lamps, vases, pitchers, and tumblers. These and many other styles are beautifully presented in over 300 gorgeous color photographs. Many pages of historical documentation are included to make this the most comprehensive reference guide to Anchor Hocking's Forest Green glassware.
Customer Reviews:
Good representative book on Forest Green Glass.......2007-09-03
As a casual collector of Anchor Hocking forest green glass over 30 years, this was my first ever book I'd ever gotten (or seen) dedicated to my favorite type of glass. I was thrilled to see that nearly everything I had was represented and it gave me better background about the items. I used it that very weekend to recognize a small green vase I would otherwise have not known was anchor hocking (had gold paint on it). But don't use the prices as indications of the real value of the items, unless maybe yours are new-never-used still in original boxes. you couldn't sell your collection fo the prices listed I don't believe -- I'm still picking them up for just a few dollars at "junk" stores, and yard sales. And ebay items are never over $10.
Colonel Hopper does it again!.......2000-04-09
In Forest Green Glass, Philip L. Hopper has once again teamed up with photographer Bruce Walters to produce a well-researched and stunningly beautiful book on Anchor Hocking glassware. The documentation is meticulous, and includes copies of old factory sheets, batch formulas for Anchor Hocking's green glass, and a section on confusing similarities. Besides precise research, Hopper's captions clearly identify each piece of glassware, it's measurements or dimensions, the factory's stock number, and an estimated value for the piece. Since there are only a few items per picture, the reader gets an enlarged view of each and every piece of glassware, and doesn't have to flip back and forth to find out what it is. Combine the thorough research with Bruce Walter's creativity, and technique of underlighting colored glass, and you have one gorgeous publication. A 21 gun salute for the Colonel and his cohort!

Gorgeous designs but..........2001-09-05
This project book includes 3 main chapters:Samplers and scenes (very nice ones),home projects (throw,cushions,linen,...)and baby projects (badges,blanket,rug,...). The designs range from very basic to more detailed work and are really nice. The reason why I'm not giving this book 5 stars is that the pattern charts (which are an integral part of such a book) of the more complicated big designs are very small, difficult to read and follow and very eye-straining. The charts being in black and white doesn't help.
