An essential read for multi-cultural studies.......2007-04-12
The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is almost certainly the most widely known work by an Islamic writer. It is the only non-western piece of literature that I was required to read when in high school and I recently re-read this version. Like most historical pieces, it is difficult to understand without additional knowledge of the historical context. Khayyam was a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer, which means he was as educated as the times allowed. The Rubaiyat was written in about 1120 C. E. and is in the form of quatrains or four-line rhymes.
As a poem, the flow is smooth and the imagery deals with the lot of what human life is. The fourteenth quatrain is:
Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend,
Before we too into the Dust descend;
Dust into Dust, and under Dust to lie
Sans Wine, sans Song, sans Singer, and--sans End!
with clear imagery regarding death, which is a consistent theme throughout. Other quatrains deal with how we cope with life, and how we deal with the difficult questions of our existence. Quatrain 74 is
Yesterday This Day's Madness did prepare;
To-morrow's Silence, Triumph, or Despair:
Drink! for you know not whence you came, nor why:
Drink! for you know not why you go, nor where.
describing how little we know about the consequences of our journey through life.
The deep imagery of the poems requires that you read it slowly and several times. Like the best of poems, the passages are often open to multiple interpretations, which increases the level of interest. I hope that the high schools in my area still require the eleventh grade English classes to read this poem, understanding it is truly within the purview of multicultural studies.
Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.......2007-03-01
I collect this work in different formats. This particular book is very good. I recommend everyone reading the Rubaiyat at least once in their lifetime. It is an excellent poetic examination of Man's purpose and Man's relation with God. One can appreciate the Rubaiyat only for its beautiful poetic images or explore it over and over for its deeper philosophical nuances. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is ever a delight no matter how you prefer it.
Illustrated Editions Company Review.......2006-01-14
There are so many editions of Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat translations that have been published, with many being limited editions. Several of these rose to highly collectible status, especially those with tipped-in color plates by Dulac, Pogany or Arthur Szyk. These necessarily set them apart from other more textual editions.
This review has specifically to do with the Illustrated Editions Company 1938 printing. Physically, at 11 1/2" x 8" it is rather long and wide, almost completely black, except for a red illustration of a mosque on the cover, and thin.
I give 4 Stars only because it is not the first Fitzgerald edition, but a 20th century reprint. Beyond that, this is the most excellent of editions. The Illustrated Editions Company version has the first and last Fitzgerald translations.
This book is powerful and sacred. Reading it will invoke a shamanic experience-- you will be there, as Omar uses the wine metaphor to teach the value and ephemeral substance of life. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is essential metaphysics. The note and comment that open this edition are key to understanding why the Illustrated Editions Company is above all the rest, even other collector editions, of which I own several. It is the care and quality of the edition that sets it apart, certainly not anything distinguished about its content. This is my favorite edition of all. The tipped in color plates by Hamzeh Abd-ullah Kar are authentic Persian fantasy, and reading each carefully printed verse on the heavy, slightly glossy parchment is a religious experience. There is something qualitatively different about reading the Illustrated Editions Company version.
I can't find much else about this copy on the net, but there is one site that shows a copy remarkably similar to the one which I am using to base this review. I see no evidence that the title letters were ever gilt, although whenever the book goes up for auction the owners usually say the gilt is worn from the letters. This can't be true of all these copies, especially for a printing as late as '38, so I'm inclined to believe there never was any gilt lettering. I have seen other far less well preserved editions from earlier periods that have almost fully retained their gilt. The gems are between the boards, in this case.
The comment by Edward Heron-Allen is itself a collectible piece of literature, though he wrote only one paragraph. Truly an edition which can only be enjoyed by the reverential Rubaiyat enthusiast.
Edward FitzGerald Gets Far Too Little Credit For this Translation.......2005-12-08
These verses, which we anglophones have come to intone as though they were scripture, are not those of Omar Khayyam (meaning Omar the tentmaker in Farsi), but those of a less celebrated Elizabethan poet, Edward FitzGerald. Our affection for the rhyme scheme, the aliteration, the meter, the very image the words evoke, is not for Omar, but for his tranlator, Edward FitzGerald. It was not Omar who wrote, "oh, but the long, long while the world shall last," but FitzGerald. FitzGerald translated this Twelfth Century poetry in the very early years of the Nineteenth Century, seven hundred years after Omar. It is FitzGerald to whom we should be grateful.
FitzGerald's verse is literally accurate only to the extent of its a, a, b, a rhyme scheme; and even so, the final combination of phonics comprising the cadence in each line is constructed in our language, not in Omar's. Only in the figurative meaning of the verse is the translation from Farsi accurate. What we anglophones think of as Omar's verse is not at all Farsi and not at all Twelfth Century. It sounds much more familiar to our ears because FitzGerald has cut the time gap by seven centuries and the language barrier to nothing.
But don't take my word for it; speak to any Iranian (if you permit them to speak for their ancestral Persians) and they will tell you that Omar is known principally for astrology and alchemy. Some will say he was a mathmetician, but no evidence remains to support that claim. Omar is never quoted as a poet by his ancestral Iranians. I have asked a dozen university-educated Iranians to recite a single verse of Khayyam and none have been able to do so. Not one.
One explanation for this omission is Omar's obsession with hedonism in general and wine in particular, which is now so stridently verboten by his militantly muslim ancestors. FitzGerald drew inspiration only from Omar, and that inspiration has positioned him in an orbit around Omar's star. Our current affection for Omar Khayyam's verse is not remotely due to the accuracy of FitzGerald's translation, but rather to his own creativity and originality.
The reason for the historical coincidence making blood-brothers of Omar and FitzGerald is the shocking nature of their verses. Omar's rebellion against the muslim propriety of his age paralleled FitzGerald's rebellion against the Elizabethian propriety of his age. Yet even to us these verses still sounds racy, and as long as they do they'll titillate our sensibilities, irrespective of their authorship.
"Perplext no more with human or divine,
Tomorrow's tangle to the winds resign,
And lose your fingers in the tresses of
The cypress-slender minister of wine."
Review of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.......2005-10-15
Wisdom of the past has transcended time and is true today as it was 700 years ago. Verses are easy to memorize and the book could be like a bible by your night table. Too bad that not all of Khayyam's poetry in this book.

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover -&- Conservative vs. Liberal.......2007-03-22
The cover of this book made me think it would be a juvenile, prim and proper story. It was anything but with almost too many love scenes that were detailed to the point of "too much information."
However, this was an outstanding story with fabulous characters; an authentic "page-turner" from the get-go.
I thought the author balanced Clay's republican view and Bailey's democrat view very well, which couldn't have been easy. I'd have to side with the senator, though. Page 251 describes perfectly their differences. Bailey and Clay both supported the many shelters that helped 'regular law-abiding kids,' but since funds were limited, the kids didn't get much. Bailey wanted a separate shelter for 'gang kids' who would get job training so they could get the skills they'd need to succeed. Clay's point was that ALL the kids deserved the training, but Bailey didn't see it that way. Clay didn't feel the 'good kids' should get less of a chance than the 'bad kids,' most of whom were hardened criminals, and he was absolutely right.
Shay at her finest!.......2007-03-09
DA Clay Wainwright felt bad when the jury handed down the guilty sentence to the "Street Angel" as Bailey O'Neil was referred when it was discovered that she harbored a fugitive gang member. For that she spent a year in jail. Fast forward 11 years - Clay is now a Senator and Bailey is still working to get kids out of gangs since her own half sister died when she was a teen.
Bailey and Clay clash in the papers and on just about every issue. After getting a tour of her facility and getting put on a task force with her, the two get to know each other and despite knowing that a relationship is out of the question, they fall in love. Bailey has four over protective brothers (you can just see a series in the making here... as Aidan's story is told in "Close to You"), as well as a young son; Clay has a 20 year old son from his marriage which ended when his wife took a lover. Despite their lack of common ground, the chemistry oozes off the pages (though readers will be annoyed with the lack of safe precautions the "street angel" takes).
Shay is a great storyteller - always providing sweeping stories that are so well plotted and characters so well developed that the reader feels like these are friends and neighbors. The O'Neil family fits that bill entirely. And Shay researched her topic - gang violence - knowing that there are no exact answers as to how to bring about change.
Riveting Tale.......2005-10-11
Someone To Believe In by Kathryn Shay is an emotional, deeply sensual tale.
Bailey O'Neil is a woman on a mission to save teens from the deadly world of gang violence. She has a personal stake in it since she lost her younger sisters life to a gang. Bailey's family though close knit is forever worrying about the lengths she is willing to go to, to save these teens. Her methods put her at a cross purposes to Senator Clay Wainright.
Clay Wainright is an up and coming politician. Bailey O'Neil has been a thorn in his side since he sent her to jail for a year over ten years ago. Now as a Senator he is assigned with Bailey to the same task force to address gangs. Their views are as different as night and day. Sparks fly in their discussions on the task force. But an all-consuming passion erupts between them outside of those meetings.
This isn't an easy romance for either party, each has issues from the past not just their opposite views. Clay is determined to protect Bailey and Bailey is equally determined to save these teens at all cost.
Someone To Believe In grabs you and pulls you in. The issues are real and complex. I couldn't read this book fast enough. I hope Bailey's brothers get their own stories soon.
Intensely emotional.......2005-09-20
Kathryn Shay's books are on my must-buy list for a reason: nobody does intense emotions better.
In Someone to Believe In, Bailey O'Neil and Senator Clay Wainwright have a real conflict. They've been public enemies for over a decade--ever since he sent her to prison for a year. She's known as The Street Angel for her work with kids in gangs. He's also concerned with youth gangs, but believes Bailey's going about it the wrong way, that she should leave things to the authorities, and that she shows a blatant disregard for her own safety.
The conflict doesn't go away just because these two fall in love. On the contrary, it makes their differences more important and painful. They make it in the end, of course--it is a romance, after all--but it's definitely not an easy journey.
The good:
The writing. Nobody does emotionally charged romance better than Kathryn Shay. The emotions of all the characters are right there on the page, and they're understandable.
The topic. Ms. Shay has done her research, making the problem of youth gangs real, and the differing opinions of how to deal with them clear.
The characters. Even the secondary characters--Bailey's son, brothers, co-workers, and Clay's son, and his political rival--are three-dimensional with clear motives and goals.
The bad:
I really had to agree with Clay: Bailey took too many stupid chances with her safety, particularly since she had a young son depending on her. It made me less able to connect with her as a character.
The final conflict went on a bit too long, and made me impatient.
The verdict:
This isn't a sweet, happy love story. It's painful and emotional, and you'll stay up way too late reading it to find out how Clay and Bailey manage to earn their happy-ever-after. But it's worth it.
Someone to Believe In.......2005-09-12
Eleven years after being sent to jail, Bailey O'Neil is known as the Street Angel, having formed a network to rescue kids from gangs. Her work brings Clay Wainwright back into her life. Once upon a time, the ambitious attorney sent her to jail, but things have changed. A strange attraction draws them together time and again, but his life is very public, and becoming more so. In contrast, hers must be hidden, for safety's sake. As they explore meshing two worlds, a horrendous crime threatens their love.
**** As always, Katherine Shay's compelling writing draws you into the scenario she creates. More about Bailey's past might have been good to know, but this does not really detract from the fast paced, yet warm plot in the least. Brava, Ms. Shay. ****

Book Description
Gordon Schell is a doomed man. He's quit his job, and his wife, Rosita, is angry. She'll have to wait tables to provide for the three children and she hates that. When Gordon finds work just days later, instead of starting his new employment he's arrested for murder. A witness identified his mug shot as the suspect seen leaving the victim's house around the time of her death. Complicating matters further, Gordon denies knowing the victim, Darcy Rowland, even though he has been in her house before. What is he hiding?
Tried, convicted and sentenced to death, Gordon has a date with the executioner. His new attorney, Manny Rodriguez, and the private investigator must race to discover enough evidence which points to the real killer to convince the governor to order a stay. Convinced he will die soon, Gordon tells Rosita that he will be back for her, but only if she tells him from her own lips that she still believes in him. Before she can say it, the guards haul Gordon away. Does he meet his executioner? And, if so, did he hear her? Can Gordon really be back for the only woman he ever loved?

nice but boring.......2002-05-10
The message of this book is great, but it's just kind of dull. I think it would be good to read aloud to a kid, but for an adult, it didn't have as much content as I had hoped. The ending was beautiful, though. Worth reading....
Closer to the heart of God.......2002-02-23
This book is a delight to read. In just one sitting it so clearly show's you the heart of Abba, as only Manning can do. The tender story of healing in a boy that is you, and is me. As you turn each page the layers of your heart are stripped away to expose the tender heart that God created. The heart that beats only to love Him and to enjoy fellowship with Abba! I will be reading in anytime I need to be reminded of His love for me.
Another Manning masterpiece!.......2000-01-27
Perfect in it's simplicity, Manning's parable will warm your heart by revealing God's unconditional love and promises to you. What a joy to read for young and old!

Manning's simple message of God's Love in a parable form.......1997-08-07
Manning's message of God's love is expressed very simply in a parable meant for both children and adults. A masterpiece in simplicity to convey a message we all need to hear. Jesus Christ loves us more than we can imagine and is a friend when all others turn away. Thanks Brennan once agai

An amazing source of both inspiration and instruction!.......2001-07-07
Judith Montano is easily one of the modern masters of crazy quilt techniques and embellishment needlework. Her book (sadly I see it is now out of print) "Crazy Quilt Odyssey," coming in just under 150 pages, is jammed-packed with great information about crazy quilting.
The book begins with a short history of piecing, quilting, and embellishment thereto and then proceeds to offer a rich education in various needlework methods.
Happily, Montano does not limit herself to quilts, which are mighty big undertakings for many of us. She gives great ideas and instructions for smaller projects, including many for wearable art and adding embellishments to ordinary street clothes.
The instructions are quite clear and nicely photographed, which is extremely helpful for the beginner or needleworker of limited experience. There are many black-and-white photographs, but there are also quite a number of beautiful color ones, too, which really incite the creative juices!
I'm glad I have this in my library; it's one of the first books I pull of the shelf when I'm in search of ideas. DEFinitely worth a search of used book resources to find this one...or else I recommend checking out one of her many other books or videos.
The ultimate crazy quilt inspiration!.......1996-11-21
Judy has gone way beyond her Crazy Quilt Handbook, with
expanded sections on silk ribbon emboidery, burned fabric
edges, and fantastic landscape designs. You'll want to
grab your scrap basket and start right away to create your
own contemporary Victorian style crazy quilt project, and
she's got plenty of projects to choose from.

This is a beautiful book featuring page after page of full color photos of quilt block designs.
The blocks are pieced using foundation piecing methods. The first chapter guides you through the process of doing foundation piecing with illustrated step-by-step instructions. Helpful hints are provided by piecers from all over. The fabrics used look modern-not Victorian.

Book Description
Flavius Josephus, the first-century Jewish historian, is without a doubt the most important witness to ancient Judaism from the close of the biblical period to the aftermath of the destruction of the temple in 70 CE. His four surviving works - Judean War, Judean Antiqities, Life, and Against Apion - provide the narrative structure for interpreting the other, more fragmentary written sources and physical remains for this period.
His descriptions of the Temple, the Judean countryside, Jewish-Roman relations and conflicts, and groups and institutions of ancient Judea have become indispensable for the student of early Judaism, of Classics, and of Christian origins alike.
The priestly aristocrat Josephus was born in 37 CE and died around the year 100. After fighting against the Romans in the war of 66-73 and surrendering in the earliest phase of the campaign, he moved to Rome where he began a productive literary career. His four surviving works in thirty Greek volumes are widely excerpted for historical purposes, but still not often read in their literary and historical contexts.
This project aims to assist every serious reader of Josephus by providing a new literal translation, along with a commentary suggesting literary and historical connections.
This is the first comprehensive literary-historical commentary on the works of Flavius Josephus in English. Scholar Steve Mason, York University, Toronto, edits the scheduled 10 volumes.
This volume provides a new English translation of and commentary on Josephus' Judean Antiquities 5-7 in which he retells the history of Israel from the entry into the land down to the death of King David. The commentary devotes special attention to the ways in which Josephus deals with the data of his biblical sources, i.e. the Books of Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel, and 1 Chronicles. It likewise looks to the question of the biblical text-forms used by Josephus and calls attention to Jewish and Greco-Roman parallels to his presentation. The book is intended primarily for biblicists and scholars of ancient Judaism.
Readership: This book is intended primarily for biblicists and scholars of ancient Judaism.

Of course, I am not advocating robbery, but all of the books that I put on my shelves by Sara disappear. This book will be another of those. I teach high school English to 9th graders and her books have broad appeal with my struggling readers and to my honor students. She speaks to the adolescent in all of them including me. It, however, is a great book for teachers to use to begin working on the art of performance poetry and poetry slams with your students. So if you are not afraid of a little noise, enthusiasm and excitement in your class then Wham ---get your own copy to jam with Sara and your students!

Wham! were among the worlds biggest pop music sensations of the 80s. Simon Napier-Bell began managing the British group in 1983 and, over the next three years, turned them into superstars. This was due in no small part to his ability to get them to perform in Chinathe first-ever Western pop band to do so. Im Coming to Take You to Lunch is the never-before-told story that recounts Bells dealings with an extraordinary cast of characters. From heads of state to seedy CIA operatives, Im Coming to Take You to Lunch is a behind-the-scenes look at the management of a major international pop-act and the diplomatic machinations involved in breaking the walls around Communist China.

Wham! Behind the Scenes.......2006-01-16
If you would have killed to be a fly on the wall during the inner workings of "Whamania," you absolutely must read "I'm Coming To Take You to Lunch A Fantastic Tale of Boys, Booze, And How Wham Were Sold To China." Simon Napier-Bell managed the group in their early days. They had signed a pretty bad record deal with Innervision for their debut album "Fantastic." "Fantastic" was a big hit in the UK spawning the hits, "Bad Boys," "Young Guns," "Wham Rap," and "Club Tropicana." Despite the hits, according to Napier-Bell the group were pretty broke. Despite not having hit the proverbial jackpot yet, Napier-Bell describes George Michael as being very business minded and suspicious at all times when it came to business. Although George was serious when it came to business, in the book George and Andrew are described as childhood friends who were so close it seemed they communicated in their own language with snickers and giggles tossed in. Napier-Bell assisted the group in their legal case which brought them into a deal straight with CBS. CBS signed them directly but it did not guarantee U.S. success as the label felt they were a UK act and Napier-Bell had to do a lot of convincing to sell them to the U.S., and he had to convince people that the poppy "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" was the right song.
Despite this closeness, as Napier-Bell was making business moves trying to make Wham a success in the United States, George Michael was already planning for his solo career and the waters would be tested with a single titled "Careless Whisper."
It's a really great book for the Wham! fan wanting to learn little details about the group that only a person on the inside would know. There is not much information about the groups personal life as far as relationships. There is a brief mention of Andrew dating one of the groups early backup singers and maybe a few other tidbits. What's amazing is that at the start of their international success George Michael wanted to end it all, according to the book.
As for the group conquering China and becoming the first group to play in the communist nation, Simon Napier-Bell was planning the China trip for the group before they were international stars and it finally happened after years of business meetings and trips to China.
It's a really great book and if you are a Wham! fan or someone interested in the music business you should check this book out.

Problem is, unless the "aliens" player is far dumber than the "crew" player, the aliens win, every time. Given evenly skilled players, & roughly equivalent rolls of the dice, the only way the crew has an even chance is to make a break for the escape pod from Turn One.
Sadly, that can make for a ten-minute game. I've meant to gripe to Tom Wham about this for 20 years, hoping to shame him into an "official optional" rule that might make it easier to enjoy his hilarious game a bit more thoroughly.
In the meantime, since it's a 2-player game, players ought to take a turn at each side, & then use number of moves &/or number of survivors to determine who is, overall, the better AGT player.
Hint: my crews survive better if the first thing we do is reach for the zgwortz. I know it's supposed to be food, but it usually turns out to be the most effective weapon!
Amazing Space Disaster from Tom Wham.......2003-04-01
This game is one of the most original ever developed. It feeds off all those foolish and paranoid B movies from the 1950's and 60's. While the game is rather difficult to win if you are the crew it is good fun and there are good opportunities for strategizing. I first played this game when was 14 and still enjoy it today.

Superbly researched and written account of early AZ.......2001-06-15
Written one of the best researchers of Western history, this chronicle of one of the little-known robberies in Arizona history gets more engrossing chapter by chapter. Major Wham escorted an army payroll horseback train that was robbed by locals in southeast Arizona. The locals who were charged were Mormons in an area thick with the LDS, and the region in general was resentful toward the federal government. Local politics and the religious overtones make this a great read.
