    Book Description

The concept of the Sublime has influenced aesthetic and theoretical debate ever since it was first widely invoked in the eighteenth century. However, the unavailability of many crucial early texts has resulted in a conception of the Sublime often limited to the definitions of its most famous theorist Edmund Burke. Andrew Ashfield and Peter de Bolla's valuable anthology, which includes an introduction, and headnotes to each entry, now offers students and scholars ready access to a deep and complex tradition of writing on the Sublime, many of them never before reprinted in modern editions.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of history and a little myth.......2006-03-07

Sam Chamberlain is a rogue, all right, but not necessarily for the reasons that this book indicates. Chamberlain's accounts of daring-do sometimes read like the pulp fiction of his era. Some of what he relates bears the accuracy of an eye-witness to history and with good reason. He had, in fact, ridden throughout much of Northern Mexico during the United States' war with the country from 1846 to 1848 and was on hand to see the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847. But he's guilty of something not uncommon among writers of his era -- making first-hand accounts of events where he clearly was not involved. The best example of this is his description of American deserters (San Patricios) hanged during the last battles for Mexico City. His description does not match others exactly, because at the time of the hangings, Chamberlain was still hundreds of miles away, likely near Saltillo, Mexico. For a reality check, read the editors' footnotes; they do a pretty good job of separating Chamberlain's facts from his flights of fancy.

    4 out of 5 stars Tall Tales.......2001-11-18

For those interested the Mexican War, this is a "must read" book and has been used by historians as a primary source for years, but his crude paintings are also a treat for the scholar, because Camberlain captures many scenes which have escaped photographers and those who made lithographs, including the massacre of Mexican civilians by Arkansas troops in a cave in Northern Mexico.

Sam Camberlain was a 16 year old private from Boston who served in the elite 1st US Dragoons in Mexico and gives vivid descriptions with crude but animated paintings of Saltillo, Monterrey, and Northern Mexico. Although he was not at the savage fighting during the capture of Monterrey, he claims to have been there so the reader is left to wonder about his other claims and the accuracy of his paintings of the combat in which he lied about being involved. Perhaps he had contact with those who were actually there?

Sam Chamberlain was in the Mexican War and painted some interesting small glimpses of life & death. Reading his book is almost like listening to a veteran who seems to have been everywhere and done everything (especially with women). Sam Chamberlain relates deaths of soldiers to Mexican guerrillas and duty in the occupation but more often than not, Sam Chamberlain proclaims preposterous pick-ups with a host of women. The reader almost senses the author is bragging to fellow high schoolers in a locker room or to anyone who will listen in a bar, hence the title of the book is fitting "My Confessions: Recollections of a Rogue". This book would probably be disregarded as pure fantasy if it were not or the fact that sometimes he does detail military and daily life senarios which are proved by others.

Truth or Tall Tale? Read this book and you be the judge.

4 out of 5 stars Meet The Judge.......1999-05-25

Read 'My Confession' for a first hand account of the War with Mexico, as well as an eyewitness report on the notorious Glanton party. This is one of the most controverisal stories in American and Mexican history, and the discovery of these papers in the 1950s brought out an event that was otherwise best 'swept under the rug' of history. Cormac McCarthy pointed a spotlight on this whole affair when he wrote Blood Meridian, and fans of McCarthy may want to read this to confirm that he wasn't making everything up in Blood Meridian:The Evening Redness in the West. The basic storyline of The Kid, Glanton and the Judge's scalp hunt as set forth in 'Blood Meridian' is related here by the man who lived thru it all, General Samuel Chamberlin. I for one was disturbed to find the Judge among the cast of real characters, I couldn't imagine that such a horrible figure actually existed. Read the book to find out what really happened to Glanton, the kid, as well as 'the judge'. And keep your powder very dry.

5 out of 5 stars A CONTINIATION OF THE "SDDU" COVERT AGENTS.......2006-08-20

Possibly #5 in the "SDDU" saga of covert agents [haven't located the Sheikh's book yet to ascertain the #]

This story takes us to Alaska and some more arms dealings with Tsernyakov [although we still do not really met this villian].

Mike McNair has gone "AWOL" when he finds out the a former special agent, Tessa Nielsen is in danger. He hasn't forgotten her in the past 3 years.
Boy, is Colonel Wilson po'd. McNair may lose his job.

Tessa is still carrying a lot of garbage from when she walked away from McNair 3 years ago when his actions [of saving her] got her thrown out of Special Forces. She had lasted the longest of the 5 females trying out for the Unit.
Of course, the powers that be were not likely to allow a female on the all male unit. [boy are these women stupid - they stir up the hormones and then wonder what the problem was].

But back to Alaska - with the snow storms and the bears [boy was that one good] and Brady Marshall on their trail, the events get a bit steamy.
I can't believe that it was that easy to get to Siberia. [grin] A slow boat to Russia. Hormones are the devil to deal with. Mike called on his trusted friend, "Shorty" to rescue him and Tessa from the Russian tundra - war heads and TNT.

They have the CIA and others searching for them making life a bit miserable. Tessa is another one of those mixed-up emotional women who tend to make themselves miserable.

Another Excellent tale - great characters - good suspense - good plotting - great pace.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --M - THIS is a keeper set with more to come - next up is PROTECTIVE MEASURES with Daniel DuCharme.

This book (Rogue Soldier) by Dana Marton grabbed my complete attention from the first page. If you like an action packed read with a hint of romance then you must read this book.

I had to read the whole book in one day. I could not put it down. Awesome characters, so well defined that I could identify with every one of them.

I just can't say enough about this book. I loved it so much that I have gone and purchased all of Dana Marton's books. Well, the ones that are still available.

You better get yours now. This girl (Dana Marton) is going to be a star.

Truth or not, this book is a fun read. I bought it because I wanted to read a first-hand account of the Glanton Gang (after reading Cormac McCarthy's excellent "Blood Meridian"). Although Chamberlain may fudge on details, I think readers can sift a pretty accurate portrait of the era from his writings.

3 out of 5 stars Improper story line?.......2006-09-02

I was puzzled by the story of how the humans first acquired the hyper drive. I think the author made a few foul ups, and am not sure that part of it fits the entire story line. Otherwise, not a bad read overall.

5 out of 5 stars Best of all the Man Kzin reads.......2005-09-12

A Darker Geometry is quite simply, the finest non-Niven Kzin/Man story. It has the works - Kzin, Outsiders, Puppeteers (even an aggressive, WARLIKE Puppeteer !) A superb story that would have graced Niven.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-11-09

If you like Sci-Fi and you like Space, then You've GOT to read Larry Niven's Man Kzin books. He's gotten together with scientists and over 20 writers and created a so-fi world unlike any that's ever been created.

His sci-fi world will continue perpetuating itself long after he's gone because many young writers have bought into his sci-fi version of space as well as MANY older well established ones.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-12-05

An excellent and exciting contribution to an excellent series. In particular I liked "The Colonel's Tiger" by Hal Colebatch, which as well as filling in an important part of the story of the Man-Kzin wars, is a subtle detective story and a convincing and frightening portrait of a defenceless society smothered by blandness in the tradtion of Huxley's "Brave New World." - the naive, defenceless Earth as it existed just before the carniverous, predatory Kzin came calling! The other stories are good too, increasing the complexity of the Kzin without distorting their nature. Buy it as an entertaining read and a good mind-stretch.

3 out of 5 stars Fills in some interesting gaps in the history..........2002-03-05

For those of you new to the series, the Kzinti are a race, created by Larry Niven, which he has given other authors permission to write stories about in this series. They are a spacefaring, sentient race evolved from carnivorous hunting cats rather than omnivorous monkeys, just as intelligent as humans and slightly more advanced technologically, at least in some areas. The only thing that has kept them from enslaving all of humanity is that their code of honor frowns upon sufficient caution; their genral idea of strategy is "first you scream and then you leap."

This installment comprises three stories, two short and one nearly novel-length by itself. On balance, they are well-written, but the characterizations seemed somewhat flat by comparison to previous stories in the series. It's difficult to say why exactly; the characters were not by any stretch of the imagination stereotypical, but I simply found it difficult to really care what happened to them.

The first story details the events just after first contact, when the first human ship to encounter Kzin was attempting to persuade a dubious government back home of the reality of the threat. The writing was good, but the main character lacked anything to make him a sympathetic character, and the plot turned on a rather dubious bit of retroactive deus-ex-machina.

The second story detailed the events that led to humanity acquiring a faster-than light drive technology, giving them the technological edge over the Kzin for the first time. These events had been referred to in previous installments, but the full story had never been told. Again, the writing was good, but while the main characters were certainly more sympathetic than the main character in the first story, they never really connected, and events still seemed rather like a deus-ex-machina, out of the control of the characters and dependent on aliens vastly more advanced, and vaguely reminiscent of beings from the Cthulu mythos.

The third story was in some ways the best, except that it was too short to live up to its potential. Just a hint, but it may be that we actually met the Kzin Patriarch himself in this one! If so, he demonstrated that he deserves his position.

A Philadelphia Catholic in King James' Court was an interesting book. Not being Catholic, I saw the book in a different light. The book was a bit boring in the beginning speaking of farms and churches in the country. But it grew from a few differences to a spiritual battle between Les' Church and Michael. The debates towards the end were heated and very valid points presented Michael. However, the antagonists and their opinions were portrayed as ignorant and represented no true Christian views.
The book was over all offensive and exemplified the ignorance of the author toward other faiths that aren't Roman Catholic. It gave the reader a disorganized look into the Protestant Religion as a whole, though the author only speaks of Fundamentalists. It seemed vague, unfactual at times, and misrepresented the intended target of the book, Protestants. We do not need books like this that divide our faith but literature to unite us, excluding differences. The legacy of Pope John Paul II actually defies the intentions of this book. His life and death were a testimony to God's calling, to unite Christianity. I truly admire the Catholic faith, but this book seeks to demonize my faith in which I can not appreciate. I wasn't very fond of this book, but it was interesting though I wouldn't recommend it.

A Philadelphia Catholic in King James' Court is an informative, beneficial, and interesting book to read. The plot is based around a 17 year old, Catholic boy named Michael. After the death of his father, he, his mother, and siblings get away from Philadelphia to spend a summer at a relative's house in rural Kentucky. There Michael is faced with many challenges concerning his Catholic faith and beliefs. He becomes involved in many heated biblical debates with local fundamentalist. I found that these debates made the book exciting and it kept me hooked in. Through many instances in the novel, I gained greater knowledge on why Catholics believe in what they do, and on the biblical information to support those beliefs. That made the book very unique. If you are a person questioning the Church's teachings and beliefs, then this novel is a must read.

Michele Scicolone wrote Italian Holiday Cooking in order to save those most-loved recipes our immigrant grandparents and parents brought with them from Italy but we never thought to write down. Surely, this is comfort food at its finest. Savory Easter Pie is rich with onions and sausage; ricotta, Parmigiano, mozzarella, and Swiss cheeses; and ham, salami, and pepperoni. Can you smell it baking? Umbrian Ragu, more elaborate than most, calls for dried porcini mushrooms and black truffles. Venetian Risotto with Peas for San Marco is soft and creamy, served wetter than typical risottos, and is very simple to make.

Scicolone's introduction to each recipe includes a bit of background about where it came from, for which holiday it's prepared, and tips for preparation. She also recommends a wine for every dish. And since no holiday would be complete without dessert, Scicolone offers a beautiful selection of cakes, cookies, and other desserts, including a Chocolate Chunk Cheesecake made with ricotta, Creamy Rice Fritters, and the elusive first recipe of the 150 she collected for this project, Vecchiarelle, which are little cookies flavored with red wine and honey. --Leora Y. Bloom

This is one of the better Italian cookbooks I have come across
but I ran into a problem with the first recipe I tried. The orange semolina cake sounded great. I prepared the semolina, made the ricotta mixture and beat the egg whites. The recipe never tells you what to do with the cooked semolina! I'm an experienced cook, and I figured it went into the ricotta mixture, but who knows? We're eating it tomorrow, Christmas Eve and I guess I'll find out then.

I though the pictures in this book were outstanding. The text that goes with them is somewhat brief however, and I would not recomend this particular book unless you have a solid base knowledge of SS Uniforms in general. It expects you to know the basics. But if you are farmiliar with SS Uniforms, then by all means this is a highly recomended addition to your collection.

This is the most complete reference of SS camoflage patterns and clothing I have seen. It includes several patterns (plane, palm, blurred edge, dot, oak leaf and LIEBERMUNSTER ), as well as extensive coverage of the garments utilizing these designs (zeltbahn, smocks, M-44, panzer, hats, mitts, parkas, anoraks and tropical clothing). The book contains hundreds of clear color photos and documents the development of each pattern and piece. An excellent buy!

one of the best if not the best works on the camo patterns of the waffen-ss that I have come across not only in american lit. but as well as german sources. also is a very periodical look to arms, equipment as well as unit insignia.

                      Book Description

Let the Master of Brick Stitch teach you an entirely new and easy way to make these very popular small beaded purses that are worn as necklaces. And as a bonus, learn an exciting new beading stitch called Freeform, which can be used to make all sorts of jewelry. New ways to use brick stitch, new designs, new techniques, and the same best-selling Deon quality that crafters have loved for more than ten years.

Deon's new book is fully illustrated, with her characteristic easy-to-follow instructions and lots of photographs of the designs - both color and black & white. The patterns are clearly graphed by computer, making them easy to read and follow. Included are many ideas for trimming the edges of a purse, as well as a variety of necklace strap suggestions.

Deon's Tubular Brick Stitch techniques are unique, allowing the beader to start every row at the edge of the chart. The starting point does not spiral around the beadwork as with many other purse techniques, making this method easier to use. The Tubular Brick Stitch instructions include sections on design charting, tubular foundation rows, and beading the body of a purse. Various trimmings for the top and bottom of a purse, plus beautiful necklace straps are explained and illustrated. Any of these trimmings can be added to any of the purses, as the photographs suggest. Instructions for the Freeform Stitch are given and example bracelets, necklaces and purse straps are described and pictured. This stitch is a special way to "cage" a stone, glass or driftwood piece, or any bauble as a pendant in a necklace, brooch, bracelet, bolo tie, earring or barrette.

14 exciting and easy to follow Treasure Purse patterns are included: Hearts & Flowers; "Z" Purse; Frills; Fleur-de-Lis; Windmill; Hairy Elephante'; Ribbons; Wabunung; Stripes on the Diagonal; Deer To My Heart; Diamond Connection; Four-Twenty-One; Zig-Zags; and Kokopelli.

Don't miss this opportunity to own a book that you are sure to use again and again. A great gift idea for newcomers and knowledgeable beaders alike!

63 illustrations; 15 photographs; 10 pages in full color.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginning Beader.......2005-08-25

I love making amulet bags and couldn't wait to get my hands on this little book. Being a brick stitch addict made the wait even harder. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I was when I received it.

While the individual projects are beautiful, the instructions left much to be desired for this beginning beader. Instead of having clear instructions and photos with each project, the author bunches basic instructions up at the beginning of the book. What is given is very clear, but there is a LOT left out. I am given the impression the author assumes you know how to do everything else.

The black and white photos of the projects are named but not numbered, and they aren't in any particular order I could figure out. The center of the book has numbered, colored pictures of each finished project, but not the pages where they can be found. A small thing, but it would have been useful.

Each project page itself has very little, if any, instruction beyond a pattern chart, materials, and bead chart. The accompanying photo is black and white, which isn't any help with bead color.

I hate to be so negative about the hard work the author obviously put into the projects in this book. I would rather she included more instruction and eliminated the black and white photos. The bags and few jewerly pieces are enticing, I'm just not to the point where I know all I should to make them.

This is one book I'll put aside until I learn more about making fringes and other small details which I couldn't pick up from here.

This book has a lot to teach you on the basics. And it is done very well. This is a great beginners book, with lots of easy to follow graphs and instructions. The simple bags work up nicly. I feel you will not be disapointed with this book.

                            Book Description

It's the universal challenge every designer faces: how to create stellar work on a skimpy budget. And with more companies cinching their budgetary belts tighter than ever, designers are pressed to find new and more inventive cost-cutting strategies. Great Graphics on a Budget shows how some of the world's top designers and suppliers have invented, stumbled on, and recycled innovative ways to produce high- quality, low-cost work.

Organized around ingenious ways to save money—on art pieces, with paper choices, on printing, or through dimension choices—the book offers an in-depth look at 70 cost- cutting yet cutting-edge projects. Each contributing designer walks the reader through his or her thought process, revealing the key moments and stages when cost-cutting solutions were discovered and implemented. Covering everything from the original budget to the final cost of the piece, and from descriptions of strategies used to photos of the finished pieces, this is every designer's guide to wowing clients without squeezing their wallets.
