Book Description
With the same ebullient storytelling, luxuriant prose, and irrepressible eroticism he brought to The War of Don Emmanuel s Nether Parts and Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord, Louis de Bernières continues his chronicle of Cochadebajo, the Andean village where macho philosophers, defrocked priests, and reformed (though hardly inactive) prostitutes cohabit in cheerful anarchy. But this unruly utopia is imperiled when the demon-harried Cardinal Guzman decides to inaugurate a new Inquisition, with Cochadebajo as its ultimate target.
On his side, the Cardinal has an army of fanatics who are all too willing to destroy bodies in order to save souls. The Cochadebajeros have precious little ammunition, unless you count chef Dolores's incendiary Chicken of a True Man, and a civil defense that deems nothing more crucial than the act of love. Part epic, part farce, The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman confirms de Bernières's reputation as England's answer to Gabriel García Márquez.

Clerical challenges.......2004-08-18
A melange of light fantasy with history can provide entertaining reading. In hands of an innovative stylist like de Bernieres, the read is far more - "invigorating" becomes a soft term. His facile style and comprehensive imagination produces a story of limitless value. While steeped in the real world, he introduces a new version of what has been termed "magical reality". Events have a historical base, characters are real, or are at least plausible composites. You are reading history through only slightly distorting spectacles. The deformation allows him to shift from history to parody. Under his skillful touch, nothing in the image is lost, but a wealth of insight is gained.
In this final volume of a trilogy, he depicts the life of a Latin American cardinal - a "prince of the church". Guzman suffers terrible pains and horrific visions. Demons, each with a particular role to play, appear to torment him. He's virtually incapacitated during these attacks. The ministrations of his mistress, Conception [what else?], are futile attempts at the application of folk medicine. Only their son, Cristobal, seems capable of alleviating the Cardinal's agonies. Yet even this happy therapy provides fresh challenges to the cleric. Guzman's familial problems aren't limited to this illegitimate child.
Key chapters in this volume are comprised of a letter to the Cardinal from The Holy Office. The letter aptly summarises the career and impact of the Church in his domain. It's a wonderfully scathing account of the hypocrisies perpetrated upon people in the name of divinity. Part of Guzman's tribulations relate to the letter and its account of the country. You will be returned to it from time to time.
While the Cardinal suffers, the population of a mythical city, Cochadebajo de los Gatos [look it up] find themselves under siege. They have a special relationship with the region's jaguar population, who act as an enlarged, and rather more accommodating, version of the domestic house cat. The siege allows de Bernieres to introduce yet another anomalous character in the person of the British Ambassador. After reading about his antics and treatment by the locals, it says something for British forbearance that de Bernieres was allowed to take up a London
residence.
De Bernieres' view of Latin America is, dare it be said, "catholic". He incorporates the Conquistidore traditions, the mixed roles of the Church, from hierarchical absolutist through evangelical zealots to radical Marxist reformers. The Indian population, mestizos, a lone Mexican, legions of peasants, aloof aristocrats all enter the stage. Few leave unbesmirched, usually through their own actions. Even the nation's President and his bizarre wife are woven adroitly into the narrative. No leader of a "banana republic" could suffer more at the hands of rebel forces than President Veracruz. De Bernieres gives him a slogan rich in irony, given the circumstances: "Democracy Is Safe In Our Hands".
This author has produced a string of successful works, with each seeming to outshine the preceding volume. Having accidentally picked up the third volume of this trilogy, it lost nothing in the reading due to ignorance of the previous books. Take up this, or any of de Bernieres books, secure in the knowledge that you will be shocked, entertained, enlightened and pleased you made the choice. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
Well wrote.......2003-09-26
I am new to Louis De Bernieres. I've read only two of his books, but recommend his work strongly. The characters seem real and the writing is well done - plain in a good way.
The overall impression for me is one of honest writing, which could almost have been depressing or preachy, except for the strength of the characters, and yes it is a funny book.
Jungle or Andes? Mixed soup of Latin American folklore..........2001-11-17
De Bernieres once again sets up his narration in a "ficticious" village in the "Andean Jungle" of South America. Though, if you know of the author's teaching experience in Colombia, and the many "cues" he purposedly gives (in the shape of climatic and geographic features as well as in the expression of the life style of the people involved), it won't be difficult to point out the afore mentioned Latin American country as the "cauldron" the writer will use to freely (=carelessly, non-knowingly) pour his recollection of ancient "gentile" (=pre-Hispanic, pre-Catholic) stories, traditions, myths he must have heard (and subsequently written down to be used later) during his infatuation with the "New World" (as that part of the world is often called due to the lateness to be captured into formal "civilization"). However, even when you know it's purely fictional, there's always something that won't let you swallow it smoothly when, for instance, you find indigenous Quechua, Aymara, and modern Mexican symbolic presence all mixed in one colorful but rather odd and at times tasteless concoction. The magical and the real don't blend so smartly and their transition hardly ever occurs naturally; things just happen and we have to accept them as such without a chance of thinking or criticizing it (due to the risk of giving up reading at all). The main character isn't just one individual but the collectivity of the village that plays the role of the body wherein a handful of extraordinary men and women will compete to outstand as its prominent members in isolated chapters. The language used is simple and easy to read (that is if you're familiar with Spanish sayings and expressions; otherwise you'll miss the witty and sometimes maningful names De Bernieres plays with in this book). What the author tries -and at times succeeds- to depict (not perfectly as stated before) is the way of living and thinking of the people of any Bolivarian (area comprised by Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia) small town; something that will give an idea to the reader of why a young, resource-rich, energetic, spiritual sub-continent has difficulty in "emerging from the pit". Though, of course, a more complex view in this topic is required, I have to admit. The prose is fluid intra- but not so inter- chapters; the genius of the writer is shown in short self-contained not necessarily connected descriptions which at times can get you to feel the emotions he's forcefully inviting you to be part of. If you need something to read while you commute on the train/bus (as I have to) or just need something to read by bits while catching sleep every night (in the same fashion as a 30-minute weekly soap opera), this book will do. If you need something more acurate (though still fictional) and compelling, you'd better stick to native South American writers such as Gabo (GGM) or Marito (MVLl) who are more able of painting real landscapes using fantastic brushes (or viceversa). Probably, now that I think it again, your ignorance of Latin American culture could play in your favor and make you enjoy this book as it happened to me (not a strict connoisseur of Mediterranean matters) when I read Captain Corelli's...
Such a disappointment.......2001-09-13
I read the first two books in this series which were fantastic and then I got to this one. It is terrible and a real disapointment.
Both tragic and humerous.......2001-03-13
This books is part of a trillogy of books set in a mythical South American country, which is never given a name. Like the other books of the trillogy, it is mostly concerened with the citizens of the city Conchebajo de los Gatos. A city populated with extremely unique and well drawn characters. De Bernieres obviously has a great love for his people, and you get to know all of them very well if you read the entire trilogy. The novel is not a linear story, but a collection of incidents and descriptions of events, some extremely funny, some, like the river overflowing with the corpses of murderd street children, paint a poinient potrait of the social problems of South American cities. Not a light wait romp but a powerfull portrait of south american life, with a good dose of humor and magic thrown in.
Having said that, you would be mutch better off starting at the beggining of the trilogy, The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts. The Neather Parts introduces you to all the characters properly, and is I believe a better book. Both funnier and more diverse in it's stories. If you like Don Emmanuel's, then go on to read this.

A reader betrayed.......2006-08-26
Let me first say that I couldn't put down the first two books of this series. They were well written, tightly plotted, and the story moved at a rapid pace that made me stay up far later than I should have more than once. However, the last three books in the series bogged down horribly in irrelevant side-stories. I kept waiting for something to happen. I ended up skimming 300 pages of this book, looking for a relevant plotline.
Worst of all, the moment toward which the series had been building for so long, the confrontation between the main protagonist and main antagonist, NEVER HAPPENED! Instead, the authors betrayed their readers by avoiding that confrontation in what was an obvious ploy to provide material for future books.
Sherwood Smith's excellent collaboration with Andre Norton in the Solar Queen series drew me into this series. However, after this disappointing experience, I don't plan on trusting this author again.
The Grand Finale.......2003-04-03
One of the biggest hazards of a multi-volume novel is an ending that fails to deliver on the promise built up in earlier books. Have no fear in this case -- Smith and Trowbridge bring together all the elements of this richly textured milleu to deliver a slam-bang conclusion that simultaneously ties it off in a satisfying way and leaves open the possibility of future novels set in this fascinating universe.
Do not pass up this great novel -- and lets hope that the publishers get their wits about them and start buying more works by these phenomenal authors!
Brilliant.......1999-05-01
I just finished reading it for the fifth time, and it just gets deeper and more profound and more exciting and better.
It is the very best space adventure ever, so why did the IDIOT publishers make it impossible for people I recommend it to to find? Who could be so stupid?
One story ends, another begins.......1996-11-24
The main thrust of the plot from the previous books is completed, but a new storyline is opened. I was prepared to be frustrated by this book when the name was changed from what was listed at the end of the previous book, but it turned out very well. The plots are resolved, and the fate of the attack by Dol'jhar on the Thousand Suns is revealed. Two personal and one general plots are started at the end, however, and I would clearly expect new novels to follow. The grand style that requires careful reading for full effect continues here, and the careful character development is still a joy to read

Laurie Rozakis has written a number Complete Idiot's books, so for The Complete Idiot's Guide to Interfaith Relationships, she's well equipped to tackle a cumbersome topic and break it down into manageable, sensible bites. Rozakis smartly divides the book into two sections: the first helps readers figure out if they would be able to take on the challenge of an interfaith relationship, and the next gives readers strategies for making that relationship successful.
Some of the book's advice is embarrassingly obvious: when meeting your future Jewish in-laws for the first time, don't flaunt your crucifix or arrange to meet on Easter Sunday. Other times the advice is thoughtful and solid: never rush into religious conversions or rigidly insist that a spouse convert. Rozakis also discusses different nuptial traditions within a variety of religions, such as Catholicism, Hinduism, Unitarianism, and Islam. This kind of preparation is priceless, especially as couples seek to understand and incorporate traditions into a blended ceremony. After the wedding section, the author launches into explanations of how different religions view marital sex--offering a rather fascinating lesson in sexual traditions, even if you're not considering an interfaith marriage. As with any Complete Idiot's book, the voice is formulaic, and one always has the feeling the author was told to dumb down the language to make it more accessible. That said, this is still an excellent resource, with well-indexed topics, allowing for easy reference at any stage of an interfaith relationship, including the possibilities of divorce or parenthood. --Gail Hudson

Not Practical.......2007-02-08
I didn't particularly enjoy this book. The book is written by a woman in a Jewish/Christian relationship, and I would say that it is skewed significantly but inadvertantly toward that audience. A lot of the advice in the book is written for laughs rather than practicality. For example, one suggestion to calm fears of cooking a dinner for inlaws is to put so many garnishes on the plate that they spend all their time picking through them without getting to taste the food. Or else, cook a traditional dish from an unfamiliar country so that your mother in law will not know what it's even supposed to taste like anyway. My areas of most careful reading centered upon Islam and Christianity, and I can say that most of the serious advice and religious background was basic. When they say for "Idiots", they aren't joking.
Survival guide to the wilderness of interfaith relationships.......2002-04-10
This is the most practical book I've found on the subject. It gives very useful advice about day-to-day situations that you will encounter in your interfaith relationship, such as meeting your significant other's parents for the first time, responding to concerns voiced by friends or family (it even gives advice for friends and families), planning the wedding, deciding what customs to practice or not practice as a couple and as individuals, celebrating holidays together, deciding how to raise children, dealing with family conflicts over baptisms etc., and more. Throughout, it alerts the reader to potential pitfalls and how to avoid them. I was impressed with the sensitive, nonjudgemental approach to such a wide variety of common scenarios that involve not only religion but cultural, ethnic, and racial differences as well. The book also contains introductions to a variety of religions to give the reader a basic knowledge and awareness of his/her sig other's religion. There are some great books out there on the more subtle psychological aspects of interfaith relationships, but this book is a must-have for advice on how to survive on a daily basis. I would recommend reading this book early in your relationship and using it as a starting point for deeper exploration of your significant other's religion.

Best cookbook I've seen for real people!.......2006-02-12
Most of us don't have time to devote an hour to dinner, nor do we fill like buying multiple ingredients. These seem to be those awesome word of mouth recipies that you get from a friend! Nice notes and explanations abound. I picked this up on a whim from the library and have been so pleased with it I'm shopping for my own copy. I have scores of cookbooks, but most I only use a few recipies from at most! This one is not that kind of cookbook!

Book Description
To the World War I allied forces, the U-boat attacks on combatants and non-combatants alike was a ruthless strategy without any redeeming aspects. To the German Navy this new and potent tactic was necessary to combat a superior force and introduced a permanent psychological component to naval warfare that had not existed before. This account of the U-boat campaign remains one of the finest English-language histories of the conflict ever written. First published in England in 1931, it thoroughly describes the new kind of warfare that would become a dominant force in World War II. Duplicitous political maneuvering, desperate sessions of strategy, the loss of thousands of innocent lives, and the launch of anti-submarine warfare and the convoy system are all presented in this valuable account gleaned from the official records of both sides of the conflict. Published now in the United States for the first time, this illustrated volume is sure to be required reading for everyone interested in the genesis of U-boat warfare. 24 photographs. 10 line drawings. 5 x 8 inches.

Sunday in the Park....with Maurice.......2000-10-17
Everyone is familiar with the French Impressionists, but the American Impressionists added formidable contributions to this genre. Inspired by French Impressionism, yet unmistakably American and bold, Maurice Prendergast's park scenes are lively and idiosyncratic, yet evoke the times and flavors of 19th Century Boston and New York.
The Public Garden watercolors in particular are worth study. Watercolors are exhibited on tour only infrequently, as the paper and pigments are so sensitive to light. So enjoy seeing an retrospective at home with this book. A worthwhile reference if you love watercolor and Impressionism.

Additional Insight by someone working with Errol.......2007-03-07
This is a great book written by someone who actually new and worked with Errol Flynn.
The author Earl Conrad was the ghost writer for Errol's book "......Wicked Wicked Ways".
Mr. Conrad practically lived with Errol for a time working on Errol's book and remained friends with Errol. Conrad continued a friendship with Errol's parents after his death. The content is great. Conrad writes about when he first met Errol, the time they spent in Jamaica working on the book and even Errol's under aged female companion who was in Jamaica with them.
This book covers what Mr. Flynn could not include in his autobiography for obvious reasons. There's even a medical emergency. Conrad describes in detail a kind of seizure Errol suffered (which seems to have been brought on by drugs). He describes Errol's continued involvement with women even while the under aged female is with him.
There are some rare photos of Errol as a child, Errol in uniform working in New Guinea and a home Errol had built there, etc. Most of the photos were supplied by Errol's parents.
Earl Conrad clearly cared for Errol in the way he writes this book. He never paints any kind of bad picture of our star. Conrad only writes what he sees during work and leisure time personally spent with Mr. Flynn.
This happens to be one of the few books besides Errol's own autobiography and other books written by Errol I've found of value. It gives additional insight into this great man.
I paid $9.95 for a copy (the sticker price) about 3 year ago on Amazon. The current price has ballooned due to the re-sellers greed and rarity. It's a pretty short and small book. I wouldn't even pay $50.00 for it and I'm a stone cold Flynn fan.
A great read but not for $100.00, you may feel cheated........
If your really interested in Mr. Flynn, I'd suggest reading his autobigrapy, "My Wicked Wicked Ways by Errol Flynn". If you've conquered that I can suggest "Errol and Me by Nora Eddington Flynn".
This book is written by one of his ex-wives, his second.
I find a lot of insight into this book as well. The drug use is cooberated by Conrads book.
The only thing that my upset you is Nora claims Flynn beat her on about 2 occasions. On 1 Nora writes Mr. Flynn senior was present(I beleive Flynn's father was a live at the release of this book"). The circimstances are that of taking drugs from a drug addict. Clearly she loved and I think still loved Flynn during the writting of this book. This book is only going for $20.00 bucks too.
Errol Flynn, a memoir.......2003-06-08
Excellent account of Earl Conrad's time spent with Errol Flynn gathering material for Flynn's biography. Gives an epic account of Flynn's latter years in Jamaica.....
Text book perfect example of non fiction writing.......2003-03-16
Having read "My Wicked, Wicked Ways" several years ago this book adds another dimension to our understanding of Errol Flynn. It tells the story behind the creation of Flynn's controversial biography which caused quite a stir when it first hit the shelves all those years ago. Earl Conrad was a writer of exceptional ability who was able to create some wonderfully descriptive images of Flynn's crumbling glory as he moved into his final days. This is neither a sensationalist expo-zay nor a flowery tribute. Rather, it is an extremely eloquent, articulate and thought provoking epitaph to the life a Tasmanian schoolboy who went on to become one of the most significant and highly publicized personalities of the 20th century. As a literary work it is a text book perfect example of non fiction writing.
Best written book ever written about Errol Flynn.......2002-08-02
'Errol Flynn: A Memoir' by gifted writer Earl Conrad is the finest book ever written on the life of movie great Errol Flynn. Conrad was originally hired by Flynn in 1958 to ghost-write his autobiography 'My Wicked,Wicked,Ways'. That book was published within weeks of Flynn's death in 1959, and became a runaway national bestseller. This volume is about the year and a half Earl Conrad spent with Flynn at his Jamaican hotel, writing the first book, and is a genuine page-turner with Conrad giving first-hand accounts of his adventures with Errol Flynn. The reader will find himself pulled into the story, and probably wind up finishing the book in a single sitting! Conrad shows us that Errol Flynn was more than a swashbuckling movie star, world famous philanderer, mean practical joker, as well as self-indulgent drunk and sometimes drug addict. Yes, he was all of this, but he was also much more, including a naturally talented writer, self-taught marine biologist, voracious reader, seasoned sailor, and in time a superb dramatic actor.
Readers, climb aboard this ship as it sails into high adventure!
An up-close look at the last days of Errol Flynn........1999-09-17
If you have any interest at all in the life and times of Errol Flynn then you will enjoy Earl Conrad's book. He depicts Flynn in his near last days living at Flynn's Jamacia hideaway and writing what will become "Wicked, Wicked Ways..". The relationship with Adland, the Flynn sense of humor and the decline of Flynn are all directly portrayed, accurately, yet with kindness. A must read for Flynn fans.
