"The Wind Within" is a must-read for all who want to learn about the way of life - the culture, tradition, beliefs, superstitions - of the Mende people of Sierra Leone. i love this book, everything is written well and the recipes are delicious and easy to follow. the ONLY thing i would say is that it doesn't have a ton of recipes. i may use it for one or two, but i always go back to martha for her huge selection of every kind of hors d'oeuvre in the universe. her book is amazing. but, this is great to have and i use it often.

Nest helped me to appreciate both jails and castles.......2004-07-03

Having been lucky enough to spend one week in a "deep-South" county jail for hitch hiking on expressways (back in the 70's) ... then released with no charge! I loved the Nest article on the cells. I bought Nest for our guests in Chateau-Bois-Briand because of its sophistication and originality. Most of our guests are "road-warriors" and "trouble-shooters" who enjoy reading this kind of books, sipping a Cognac next to the fire-place in a 600-years old castle.
Viewpoints and pictures are so unusual that you never get bored. Nest is a reference. This is why I would advise to buy it, either as a magazine or as a book like this one. You will never throw it away.

Had Amazon allowed me to preview even a single page from inside the book, I never would have bought it. A curiosity, a novelty, a cultural speciman, it may be. But as far removed from helpful or even interesting as one can get.

Poorly designed, nothing more than reprints of selected pages from each issue. If Nest is going to do a book, I want to see a "Nest"-y type book featuring the same wit and creativity that characterizes the magazine, not some self-congratulatory, half-baked reprint. Buy the back issues instead, don't waste your money.

Holtzman is the John Waters of interior design: ironic, iconoclastic, an impresario of the outrageous. His publication is die-cut and drilled (I thought Grant Mudford was going to punch him out for piercing his images when the two met at an LA reception for nest) but never dull. This editor has progressed far beyond conventional notions of good taste, juxtaposing stately homes and prison cells, trailers and Carlo MollinoÕs Turin apartment in a surreal collision of styles. As a minimalist I put down this book with a shudderÑthe riotous excess brought on an attack of claustrophobiaÑbut others may love it. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

Nest has been a true godsend in the otherwise discouraging world of disposable-vehicle-for-consumption magazines. Not only does nest have more visual appeal than the slickest of fashion or design magazines, it also has content: articles ranging from the scholarly to the surreal, but always well-written; photography by the likes of nan goldin and richard barnes. Anyone who is interested in architecture, design, photography, or simply the peculiarities of human behavior- in fact, anyone who is interested in anything at all- would enjoy reading nest.
For those who don't know the magazine, this book is a great introduction to the first twelve issues. And for those who are already fans or even devotees, the book provides wonderful insights into the design and editorial process of the magazine's creators. It also contains material from the first issue, which is impossible to find used.
This book will inform, educate, entertain and astonish you. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I love this book because as I 'journey' through it's pages it becomes a living testimant to what he is teaching. He plays with the layout of the text in a playful yet informative and engaging way.

Another thing is his obvious preference for 'teach by example'. Instead of trying to force the reader to wade through miles of bla, bla text he drops that approach entirely. Instead, the reader is granted endless exposure to examples and graphics.

Also, I'm impressed by the way he's formulated his literature. Even though the book is about the visual side of life he's able to bring the information alive in constantly conjuring up visuals as one reads through the book.

Overall, very informative and educational in a fun engaging sort of way. Nicely done!

We used this book in college web design classes. Very useful for color design choices as to what color schemes work, and what dosn't work on a web page. You cant help but learn something from this book. You will be susprised as to what color combinations work well together. Two thumbs up!

This book starts off with a brief introduction to type, colour theory and factors which influence legibility. Then there is a rather large section with examples of different combinations of background and foreground hue, value and saturation, with comments about what works, and why. There are sections on both obeying and breaking basic typographical rules. Lots of well commented examples in the last section of the book. I liked this book. It has a nice layout, and insightful comments. The examples are good, but print-based. Still, as an introductory book to colour, type and legibility, it could prove useful to web developers as well.

Limited usefulness.......2005-03-01

I thought the interior of the book was over-designed and aesthetically offensive. It took me a while to learn how to ignore it. The principles and considerations delivered in the book seemed pretty solid, but I felt that the book was starting to get behind the technology curve. A 1998 book on screen display doesn't do justice to what's being successfully done in 2005.

I wouldn't have bought the book if I knew exactly what it would be like, but that's in part because I just don't like the style the book is done in and espouses. Too modern, too small, too smart. . .other people like the style more than I.

Use with caution.......2000-03-25

Lots of color, some of it distracting, but useful when it illustrates the effects of different color combinations.

Some of the advice is simplistic to the point of being misleading if followed unthinkingly. For example, on page 62 it states "Even if the text is clearly structured, it may be difficult to read it if the lines are too short. But where there is only a small amount of text, as in picture captions and notes, short lines are perfectly legible". If you read this out of context, you might guess that you can shorten a line of text as much as you like and it will still be legible - but of course this isn't the case. Imagine a 12-character line for text with words like "incomprehensible" or "extra-terrestial" (both 16 characters).

I'm also concerned that the book makes almost no mention of the purpose of the text, even though this has a profound effect on the way it is read and therefore its legibility. The screenshots are nearly from sites with large amounts of graphics and small amounts of text. Different considerations apply to information-rich sites that will be read for their content, for example an FAQ.

I did like the illustrations of the same font in different styles and on different backgrounds. These really help to show how a choice that would look great on paper can look awful on screen.

Buy it for the pictures, but be cautious about how you use it.

Excellent! Beautifully designed, clearly written, good solid concepts addressed thoroughly. I am a web designer and although this is more of a beginners book, I refer to it a lot. Buy the book, you won't be sorry!

According to Julio Vial, quarterly research manager with IDC's Printers group, "The color page printer market is expected to experience healthy growth throughout the forecast period. This technology accounted for 2.3% of the overall printer market and is expected to grow to 8.0% by 2008."

Not a sequel.......2006-02-17

Although this is listed as "The Rough Guide to Elvis 2," it's not a sequel, but rather the earlier Rough Guide in a slightly larger format with a new cover. The contents are identical.

It's still a spectacular book on the man, opinionated yet comprehensive. It's a perfect starter book for King neophytes, covering every aspect of his career, and also an ideal Elvis "desert island" book - if you could only have one.

This book was recommended in a magazine and I am so glad I bought it. Very insightful and full of interesting facts that I had never known before.

I absolutely loved this book. This is a small book with over 450 pages, lots of pictures, I really had fun reading it! A MUST HAVE!!!!

Absolutely a "must have" book for every Elvis fan.......2002-07-22

This book is one of the most impressive Elvis books I have ever read. Over the years, like countless other Elvis fans, I have owned or read dozens of books about the King. So, by now, readers would think they have read most of what is known about him. Wrong. This book is loaded with stories and facts that I have not seen elsewhere.In fact, even Peter Guralnick's books (ie: "Last Train..". "Careless Love"), do not have some of the information that is contained in this book. For instance, I didn't know that Elvis and his father were going to testify in a FBI case involving them being scammed out of $950,000 (over the purchase of the Jetstar airplane Elvis bought). The author points out that this can be found in public FBI files. Yet no other book has every mentioned it. I could go on and on. There are highlighted pages devoted to Elvis concerning race, girls he was involved with, an untold story that occured when he was 16, etc. The chapters are broken up into segments: his life, his music, influences, people who influenced him, his essential albums, essential songs, etc. I strongly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed. It is among the top three books I have ever read on Elvis. Absolutely essential.
