Book Description
(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)
From Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz: the three magnificent novels—published in an omnibus edition for the first time—that form an ancient-Egyptian counterpart to his famous Cairo Trilogy.
Mahfouz reaches back thousands of years to bring us tales from his homeland's majestic early history—tales of the Egyptian nobility and of war, star-crossed love, and the divine rule of the pharoahs. In Khufu's Wisdom, the legendary Fourth Dynasty monarch faces the prospect of the end of his rule and the possibility that his daughter has fallen in love with the man prophesied to be his successor. Rhadopis of Nubia is the unforgettable story of the charismatic young Pharoah Merenra II and the ravishing courtesan Rhadopis, whose love affair makes them the envy of all Egyptian society. And Thebes at War tells the epic story of Egypt's victory over the Asiatic foreigners who dominated the country for two centuries.
Three Novels of Ancient Egypt gives us a dazzling tapestry of ancient Egypt and reminds us of the remarkable artistry of Naguib Mahfouz.
Customer Reviews:
some lovely writing, but maybe not the author's best work.......2007-05-30
Apparently these are the first three of the author's novels. This is a beautiful edition and it is also cheaper than buying the three paperback novels separately. There is an introduction, a chronology of the author's life, and then the three novels.
The introduction is a missed opportunity. I think that I might have appreciated these novels better with the help of some information about the culture in which they were written. However the introduction offers little more than plot summary. I recommend skipping it. The chronology is nice, but not tied in with the introduction.
The first novel, Khufu's Wisdom, seems to be about fate and moral choices. It tells the story of a king whose efforts to defy his fate only help to make that fate happen. It is set during the construction of one of the pyramids, but there is not much in the way of historical detail (and I think there are also some historical inaccuracies). It reads more like a biblical fable than a historical novel. It is beautifully written, but the story is somewhat simple by modern American standards.
The second novel, Rhadopis of Nubia, is much better than the first. It tells of a disastrous love affair between a king and a beautiful courtesan. It is also beautifully written, in a lavish, sometimes over the top style.
The third novel, Thebes at War, did not grab my interest and I didn't finish it. Maybe I'll try again later.
The three novels have three different translators, but all of the translations read well and have a similar flavor.
If you have not read any of the author's work before, you might also consider starting with the Cairo trilogy.
Excellent.......2007-05-21
I am so happy to have read this book. Naguib Mahfouz is a master. The stories were unique, thought provoking and powerful. I could read his work everyday forever.
Book Description
Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz mines the riches of his homeland’s ancient past in R
hadopis of Nubia, an unforgettable love story set against the high politics of Egypt’s Sixth Dynasty.
While the ravishing courtesan Rhadopis is bathing, a falcon lifts one of her golden sandals and drops it into the lap of the Pharaoh Merenra II. Upon hearing Rhadopis described as “beauty itself,” the young pharaoh decides to return Rhadopis’s sandal himself. When the two meet, they are immediately seized by a passion far stronger than their ability to resist. Thus begins a love affair that makes them the envy of Egyptian society. But blinded by their love and the extravagant attentions they lavish on each other, they ignore the growing resentment of the world around them in this extraordinary tale of star-crossed love.

Sci-Fi Meets CSI. When humanity's only moon colony suffers its first murder, it's up to the forensic experts of Luna City Special Investigations to solve the case.
Customer Reviews:
Old fashioned police procedural on the moon..........2006-06-14
There's a lot to like in Dead Man on the Moon. First the characters are well drawn with interesting quirks. For example, the medical examiner collects vampire jokes (and yes there are a fair few in the book). The daily life and detail of Luna City/University is not fully explained but we come to learn a lot about it through the story. With few exceptions, everyone living on Luna is a student and has a primary job (usually related to their major) and a secondary job assigned based on the persons skills and abilities. If you don't have any skill, well then you get the really dirty jobs like cleaning the fish tanks and recycling bins. Cost of living is very high but there's also a complex system of barter that helps residents live on their salaries. It all seems to hold together making Luna City/University seem like it could be real. For the full review see the February issue of SFRevu.com.
CSI meets Heinlein.......2006-06-08
This is a nice little trade paperback with a GREAT cover. The cover caught my eye, but the writing got me to buy. It seemed believable right from the start. The business of the characters is familiar to anyone who has watched CSI but the character development seemed original. I cared about what happened to theses folks. Too short for my taste, so where is my sequel?

Trobe needs to do a bit more research.......2005-05-07
I really wanted to like this book, and for the mostpart there were some good sections on traditional "Western" Goddesses, However, Ms. Trobe did an horrific job on the Egyptian section. While she is correct in some of her conclusions of the similarities of the Egyptian Goddess, Sekhmet and the Hindu goddess Durga, she really lost me on some of what she was saying. Sekhmet does not suck souls, and She is not a goddess that has "....an insidious evil lurking behind her eyes". If that were the case, then why include Sekhmet at all?
The Egyptian section of this book is very superficial and very wrong from an historical and magickal point of view. Please take it with a very large grain of salt.
Good cross reference if used with other books........2004-08-04
Although there the meditations and background are useful the writing style is somewhat presumptuous.
A good introduction to the Goddess.......2004-06-16
Kala Trobe chose five Goddesses from each of the Hindu, Greek and Egyptian pantheons and creates in this book a visual journey of introduction of these Goddesses for those who seek to become familiar with them, work with them and associate in the most intimate way we can.
Chosen here are some of the best known Goddesses from each of these pantheons, and explored are the attributes, experiences and emotional connections we can have with these Deities in our spiritual lives.
The introduction of this book explains what the purpose of this book is, how to prepare to work with the visualizations, understanding Godforms and making personal preparations to meet and work with these Deities. There is also a very well done index table of many other Goddesses and their functions.
Each Goddess section starts off with an 'introduction' to the Goddess, as told in a visualization. Each Goddess is then explored in her nature, her practical applications, preparation for approaching these Goddesses, specific visualizations calling upon each Deities specialities. There are healing aids, transition and change discussions and the chapter ends with a summary of the Mundane Archetypes outlining the Goddess' personality and Her aspects as seen in modern Western society today.
Ms. Trobe offers some very interesting insights into the Goddess figures in this book. Durga is seen as a Goddess of Strength, Kali assists in overcoming cycles of abuse, Isis lends us powers of intuition and assists us in finding an ideal long-term partner, Hathor is the nurturer, Artemis is focused on sporting abilities and fitness, while we look to Hecate to help us overcome prejudice.
The focus is here is to offer support in our search to better ourselves, in the form of the Goddess who will assist us in our quests. The book resounds with positive affirmations for those seeking self improvement. It is a 'take charge of your life through spirituality' book that is well written, nicely developed and contains some very lovely visualizations to help you work with Deity. If you are looking to touch Deity and don't know where to being, this is an ideal book for you.
Great magickal information and Goddess Exploration.......2004-02-23
I have read this book and found it to be VERY helpful in my magickal practices. Kala Trobe's book is great; second to her other *Essential* book "The Witch's Guide To Life".. The deities focused in this book, "Invoke the Goddess," are of the Greek, Hindu & Egyptian pantheons; much like the Gods focused on in her other book "Invoke the Gods." This book goes into more detail about these particular Goddess archetypes than any other book I've seen. There are pages upon pages of essential information about each Deity. It's great! I have found the information to be extremely helpful for magickal work and invocation. I could not compare the detailed descriptions of the Deities within to any other book. If you are looking for a huge list of various gods and goddesses (that does not go into as much detail as this book), I would recommend Janet & Stewart Farrar's "The Witches' Goddess" & "The Witches' God".. However, if you are looking for more in-depth information about Deities of these particular paths (Greek, Hindu & Egyptian), I would highly recommend this book. I have seen it on more witches' bookshelves than I have the Buckland classics! All in all, it has helped out my practices and understanding of Deity to a much greater extent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Thanks Be to Kala Trobe!
Fine if you're 15.......2003-12-29
I just got this book yesterday and I'm really unsatisfied with it. When I perused it in the store, it seemed interesting but when I bought it, I found it rather lacking. First section I headed to was the Greeks, because that's my pantheon. I've always had a closer connection to the gods and bought this book in hopes of finding a closer connection with my goddesses. I agree with what someone said. The Mundane archetypes, seemed a bit stereotypical, 2 dimensional and from my view, almost offensive.
The Part I focused the most on was Persephone. Since Hades is my patron god, I thought I'd try to understand Persephone better as well. This book did nothing more than make me relate to her even less. The author has a very New Age way of making Persephone's time in the underworld seem like entrapment. The author seem to forget that the underworld has 3 facets, not one. It's not all doom and gloom.
The Biblical comparisons left my eyes rolling. Who are you writing this for? I truly wonder.
Put some Cosmo poster girls on the cover and it would've found it's rightful audience.

Before opening Tropical Houses, hide your passport. As soon as you get a glimpse of these incredible houses nestled among lush tropical landscapes, you'll want to head straight to the airport. Author Tim Street-Porter spent more than 10 years traveling through Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Bali, Java, Mexico, and Belize, meeting the owners of these Shangri-las and taking interior and exterior photos. Tropical Houses offers intelligent, dreamy commentary and over 272 breathtaking full-color photos.
Visit the House of Iseh in Bali and sit in the verdant shadow of the sacred volcano Gunung Agung. Said writer Anna Mathews of the view from the terrace: "Once you have lived in this place you can never be the same again. You are driven mad by beauty." In Jamaica, imagine you're a guest at Good Hope. Originally a plantation, Good Hope is now a 10-room villa that overlooks the Queen of Spain valley and the Cockpit Mountains. To look at these provocative photos is to imagine yourself in another life--one where you lounge on the veranda while white-jacketed waiters quietly replace your empty rum-and-pineapple drink. The owners of these estates have taken great care (at great expense) to create private, tropical paradises. One of the most stunning is Taprobane, an incredible retreat dominating the tiny island of the same name. Built by Count de Mauny-Talvande, the house is "an octagonal villa that allowed for verandahs in every direction; a 1930s folly, which, with small gardens extending through the foliage to the overhanging edges, fully occupied the crest of his island."
The careful architecture and landscaping of these estates "opens a world of sensual experiences." When the sky is gray and you don't have time for a vacation, Tropical Houses will lift your spirits and quiet your wanderlust. --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
The ambient warmth of the tropics causes architectural distinctions between indoors and out to evaporate, along with the walls that divide them. Houses expand into the landscape, while the sights, sounds, and scents of nature waft through living spaces. Indeed, one of the pleasures of living in the tropics is an awakening of the senses that brings us closer to nature.
Internationally renowned photographer and writer Tim Street-Porter has spent more than ten years traveling through Bali, Java, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Belize, and Jamaica. This book's 272 stunning photographs, supported by Street-Porter's fascinating and informed commentary, capture the appeal and the meaning of the enviable dwellings he found in his journeys. It may be the outdoor bath, a sybarite's delight, with sun filtering through a frangipani tree . . . the deep-eaved verandah, where one sips coffee while contemplating the neighboring valley shrouded in early morning mist . . . or the thatch-roofed palapa, its main supports local tree trunks wrapped in strangler vine.
These wonderful expressions of vernacular architecture -- many the products of the world's finest architects and designers--nest in jungles, perch over volcanic cliffs, stand placidly beside lagoons, and exist always in harmony with the nature that envelops them. These are real places where people really live, but each seems suspended in a setting that is at once dreamlike and elemental.

Island living.......2005-08-02
Excellent book with something for all tastes. Beautiful pictures make you want to go home and decorate immediately.
Beautiful and Exotic.......2004-05-28
The cover is just a teaser to the exciting tropical houses Tim Street-Porter captures in this wondeful book. A real treat to exclusive tropical living around the world. Also an excellent reference to decorate in the tropical look. Street-Porter does it again as he did in Casa Mexicana. A book to enjoy over and over.
Perfect for Decorating Ideas.......2003-01-15
We are trying to get an "island" feel for our home and this book was the perfect reference. Not only are the pictures of the homes (inside and out) breathtaking, but there is enough detail about the decorating itself to be useful for our purpose. The only downside is that it makes you want to sell your current house and just travel the world staying in these amazing homes! Especially tempting is the contact information at the very end in case you actually want to rent one of them on vacation...
Great book.......2002-05-25
I found this to be a wonderful book - it has some amazing pictures. It affords you the opportunity to view some beautiful private houses that you are unlikely to be able to visit. Unlike some other books that focus primarily on houses in South East Asia, this one also features some great houses in Mexico and Jamaica.
The Best in Tropical Houses.......2001-11-29
Tropical Houses takes you around the globe to find some of the most interestingly designed homes in the world. The photographs are at once detailed and lush. If you are going to buy one book on tropical interiors, this should be the one.
Book Description
A Dutch colonial villa, a tree house over-looking a riverbank, a renovated manor, a 1930s Art Deco chaletan enchanting portrait of Sri Lanka's faded grandeur, modern vision, and timeless beauty.
The ancients called it the Island of Serendipity. Since 1972, it has been Sri Lanka, the "auspicious" (Sri) island to which King Lanka eloped with Rama's beautiful wife in the 2000-year-old Hindu epic. Through the centuries, Muslim traders, the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British were drawn to rule this magical tropical island just off the southeast coast of the Indian subcontinent.
Today in Sri Lanka one finds buildings of simple elegance and universal charisma: conversions and developments proud of the past, sensitive to present desires, prepared for the future, and displaying the best of multi-ethnic decoration with statues of the Buddha, Christian tapestries, Islamic footstalls, and Hindu sculpture. The discerning choice of houses is illustrated with over 200 color photographs of their interiors and of the breathtaking landscapes that surround them. Here are colonnaded verandas and wandering balconies, vast double doors, latticed paneling, and high ceilings.
Engaging commentaries explore the dreams behind these homes and the impact they have had on modern architecture throughout the tropics. For those searching for a hidden paradise or seeking to re-create their own, this universal style book reveals the key to designing homes and interiors deeply in harmony with their environment. 250 color illustrations.

The Australian.......2006-06-16
Where to live the Sri Lankan dream
THERE are glossy lifestyle books in abundance, luring voyeurs with their perfect depictions of art-directed homes, unblemished gardens and, most inspirational of all, interiors free of any sign of real (read: messy, cluttered) life.
Living in Sri Lanka by James Fennell and Turtle Bunbury (Thames & Hudson, $75) delivers the dream: page after glorious page of airy villas with colonnades and courtyards, rattan furniture, colonial antiques and four-posters festooned with mosquito netting. It's enough to make you wish for instant retirement, defiantly ensconced in a planter's chair waiting for the first G&T of the day.
Fennell is the capable photographer, while the splendidly named Bunbury (who, we must imagine, forever wears a turtleneck jumper, even in the tropics), described as a "traveller in the grand tradition", has penned the words.
And while his text is very good, and the cross-section of featured properties covers many styles of architecture and interior design, the real usefulness of this book for travellers lies in its coverage of hotels.
Nestled between the divine images of private residences lie villas for rent, boutique hotels such as Colombo House in the capital's upmarket Cinnamon Gardens district, and Sri Lanka's best-loved accommodation. In Galle, there's architect Geoffrey Bawa's radical Lighthouse Hotel and the charming Doornberg, a restored 18th-century Dutch homestead. These hotels attract the likes of the Australian cricket team, A-list celebrities such as Sting, and architects and designers galore.
If Fennell and Bunbury had neglected to include the rainbow that is Helga's Folly in the hill station of Kandy, the book would be a lesser publication. This gem of a hotel is, quite simply, the maddest place I have stayed. But here it is, in all its exuberant glory, with red walls, an overload of murals, painted ceilings, the whole bangshoot just bursting at the seams with the bric-a-brac of its owner, Helga de Silva Perera Blow, every inch as aristocratic and eccentric as her name suggests. Not to be missed by anyone hoping for a window into Kandy society.
