Book Description
When Europa Rode the Bull is an erotic tale of betrayal and loss that spans two decades and traverses two continents. It is a suspenseful, often heartbreaking story that explores the mercurial nature of love and commitment, and what can happen when a man and a woman married to other people rediscover the abiding passion of their lives.

Terrible book - spoiler alert.......2007-09-04
I really can't believe how glowing all of the reviews of this book are. I found this book to be predictable and trite, with plot lines that are ridiculously overused (lovers separated by wealth/family and letters that are never received - but are discovered years later???).
I also did not like the characters much at all. Annie is not a great heroine; she is a serial cheater and home-wrecker. Also, she leaves her son indefinitely to "find herself" - I don't think this is OK in any circumstance. Her only "bright" spot was her relationship with Tom Keegan.
The only thing that I agree with in the other reviews is that I've become more curious about St. Andrews.
Best book I've ever read!.......2007-08-29
"When Europe Rode the Bull" is an amazing story. It is written by Barbara Berot and I was extremely impressed to find out this is her first novel. This is the most engaging book I've ever read and you can literally lose yourself in it. I have read other reviews and other readers have said they were tempted to take off a day of work to read this book, it was that good! I totally agree and could not put it down for a second. And the best part is, there is a sequel! I ordered it the day I finished reading "Europa." It is also an amazing read. I would HIGHLY recommend both of Barbara Berot's books and I have a feeling she is going to go on to become very famous!
When Europa Rode the Bull.......2007-08-14
I really enjoyed reading this book...great characters and exciting to the end. Looking forward to the next one.
Great Love Story.......2007-07-06
I read this book 2-3 years ago and couldn't put it down. I decided to write a review because I just finished the sequel (and couldn't put it down either). Well written and very descriptive. Not a frivolous romance novel.
Best Book I Ever Read.......2007-06-20
I read When Europa Rode the Bull 2 years ago and have eagerly awaited the sequel. Barbara Berot has brought this story and its characters to life in this amazingly beautifully written novel. You will laugh, you will cry, you will stay up until all hours of the night reading this book. It is a romantic, heartwarming, heartwrenching, nail biting , can't put it down kind of book. The description of Scotland was fantastic and I felt like I was there. Her characters became so real I could not and have not stopped thinking about them even now. I am so excited to read the sequel and continue the story of Andrew & Annie.
This book has had such an fabulous impact on me as well as all of my friends who have read it. It is truly amazing that Barbara Berot, a first time novelist, has shared her talent with us, and I would like to thank her for many hours of enjoyment and many more to come.
Book Description
Juliet is already wondering whether her live-in boyfriend Will has lost his lust for life -- and for her -- when tragedy strikes: He stands her up. On Valentine's Day. Then some jerk in a fancy car splashes her with icky London rain water, takes a good, hard look at her, and drives away. What's worse he was gorgeous, the kind of guy you dream would sweep you off your feet...or at least remember you on Valentine's Day. On top of having to win a big advertising account at work it's a wonder Juliet doesn't collapse into a puddle herself. The course of true love never did run smooth To Juliet's surprise, the mystery driver turns out to be an adman named Sykes -- her competition for the hot account -- and he's awfully sorry about the splashing. So sorry that he whisks Juliet away for a romantic weekend in Verona, the storied home of her Shakespearean namesake. A funny thing happens, though. When Juliet gets back, Will's all sweet again and Sykes pitches an ad campaign suspiciously similar to Juliet's. Suddenly it's time for fair Juliet to decide whether she and Sykes are meant-to-be star-crossed lovers -- or whether Romeo has been right by her side all along.

couldn't put it down.......2005-10-15
I have always found it hard to really get into a book and finish it. This wasn't a problem when I started reading Calling Romeo. I couldn't put it down and finished it in just a few days.
Didn't make it through..........2005-02-11
I started to read this book thinking it was entertaining enough but the writing was just too basic, story line unimaginitive for me to commit to.
Other books in this category that at least deliver on good writing are worth my reading time.
A great escape!.......2004-07-21
The refreshing thing about this story is that it starts where most romantic novels leave off... the two lovers have already managed to overcome obstacles and get together... so now what? If you've ever sat in a theater after a romantic comedy and wondered what happens next, when the two lovers have to make it in the REAL world of dirty laundry and cranky moods and unemployment, etc... this book will take you down that path. The path for our heroine is sometimes fraught with disappointment, difficult choices, mixed messeges and romantic complications, but it's fun going on that journey with her... and watching her make the same mistakes a lot of us in the real world do! Of course, her life is a bit more fabulous than the average gal, but that's the other part I liked about the book! I felt I got an inside peek into hip London life. I didn't want the story to end! If Juliet were a real person, I'd want her in my circle of friends, cause she'd always have the funniest observations, the best gossip and a sweet, understanding ear when the boyfriend situation gets to be a pain! Pick up this book, now that Sex and the City is off the air, it'll help ease the loss!
Hooked from the beginning!.......2004-06-15
As soon as I started reading this novel, I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. I highly recommend this book...frequently uses British slang, though.
A very enjoyable read.......2004-02-17
This is the third book by this author and I have read every one of them and they just get better every time. Her books are lighthearted, funny and very true to life. Her descriptions of the characters are vivid and endear themselves to you. If you have ever been in any of the situations, you can easily empathise. Am looking forward to reading the latest book DO YOU COME HERE OFTEN? which I understand is out in the UK next month so it will be first on my list when I visit in the summer!

Other Books.......2007-09-03
Geoff Johns continues with his good work on the Flash here, and again in this series the Rogues gallery is well handled. A few stories that focus on the bad guys of the piece, in this trade, as the title indicates.
The most interesting is again, Captain Cold, showing a bit more depth to the character than you might otherwise think.
good stuff overall, but lacks structure.......2004-09-21
"Rogues" reprints issues 177-182 of the current "Flash" series. Fans are advised that a special issue, "Flash: Iron Heights" takes place in between this volume and the previous, "Blood Will Run." "Iron Heights" has not been reprinted and is not available from Amazon.
Geoff Johns works some very long subplots into his stories, some of which seem to be taking more than a year to play out. For example, "Blood Will Run" set up the twist of former villain the "Pied Piper" seemingly murdering his parents, a shock for longtime fans who have come to see the character as a rather benevolent soul. Expecting a resolution, I was disappointed to see that "Rogues" leaves the matter of his guilt or innocence still hanging in the air. Moreover, a second subplot, that of a band of villains plotting to make Flash's life hell, is introduced midway through this book without a follow-up. Hopefully the next volume, "Crossfire," will close some of these gaps.
Despite the incomplete feel of the book, however, what is present here leaves little to complain about. Three of the six chapters stand out, each one presenting a humanizing look at one of the Flash's villains (the "Rogues" for which the volume is named). Johns introduces a new misguided character ("Peek-a-Boo"), centers a Christmas story around escaped inmate Fallout, and wraps up with a tale of classic Flash villain Captain Cold. All three villains' tales show them as troubled souls who are nevertheless capable of love and worthy of compassion.
Although the main character takes a back seat in this series of stories, fans of the "Teen Titans" will enjoy Cyborg's guest appearance. Another prominent character continues to be Keystone City itself, with writer Johns showing us little slices of Rust Belt life (like union squabbles) that rarely show up in superhero stories. Scott Kolins has this sort of "krinkly" art style that perfectly suits the stories' working-class and back-street settings.
On the monthly Flash comic, Johns and Kolins can do no wrong, but those who only read trades may be disappointed by the lack of compact story arcs in the reprint volumes. I'm confident, however, that patient reading of these Flash stories will be rewarded.
Johns keeps you going.......2003-06-02
Starting directly after "Blood Will Run", this book delves deeper into lives of not just Wally West [The Flash], but his friends and foes as well.
Geoff Johns Continues His Epic..............2003-04-13
Rogues is the second volume in DC's reprint series of Writer Geoff John's continuing run on The Flash; (The Flash: Blood Will Run was the first.) This installment is mostly comprised of self-contained stories featuring members of The Flash's Rogues Gallery, but they all figure prominantly in a larger arc that was recently completed in the monthly series. Johns' writing is excellent, as usual, and the art, by Scott Kolins & Doug Hazlewood, is breathtakingly different from the usual Super-Hero fare; Very reminiscent of Geoff Darrow's highly detailed work on Hard Boiled and The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, and that's high praise indeed. I've never seen Gorilla Grodd look anywhare NEAR as fearsome as he does here.....
The problem with the book is the lack of explanation about certain details that might confound a more casual reader than myself. DC provides a Who's Who page in the front of the book, but the constant references to the breakout of mass-murderer Murmer are bound to confuse newer readers; Murmer was introduced in The Flash: Iron Heights, a one-shot book that takes place between chapters of this book. Why not reprint Iron Heights here, as well as the Secret Files & Origins story (Also referred to here....) that depicted Grodd's bloody capture? Also, one of the chapters takes place in the middle of DC's AWFUL "Last Laugh" crossover, and anyone who wasn't following that dreadful story will wonder where the heck all of these "Jokerized" baddies are coming from...
DC has a LOT of catch-up work to do in their trade-paperback program. Marvel comics is offering their collected editions at a comparable quality, a cheaper price-point, and a lower lag-time (Marvel offers their collections almost immediately after the story arc concludes..) than DC's usual year-long wait. And it's a shame DC hasn't seen fit to collect John's first Flash arc before reprinting his second & third...
Book Description
The perfect companion to Huston Smith's The World's Religions -- a classroom-tested workbook for the understanding of humankind's wisdom traditions.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I was expecting .......2007-03-16
I ordered this book thinking that this would help me understand "The World's Religion". Though this book is only questions about the text and doesn't help clarify the complicated reading in "The World's Religion". This workbook still can be useful if you use the questions to keep you focused and to help you remember all that is being said. But if you are a college student who is in a panic because she has to write essays about the book that she can't comprehend and hopes this will be a quick fix, well think again because this workbook still requires you to read the book and understand it.
Great supplement!.......2000-09-18
This book is an excellent supplement to Huston Smith's "Exploring World's Religions". This book follows his book chapter by chapter with a workbook page devoted to each. The questions really help the reader to outline the material from the chapter, thereby getting a better understanding of it. It also occasionally includes extra information not located in the original book. Overall, I would suggest this book, not only for students, but for anyone reading Smith's book who wants to ensure themselves of a clearer understanding.

Weekend Cooking (Kitchen Coach).......2005-04-24
This book is a must have for everyone that loves great tasting food that doesn't take forever to get on the table! I love Jennifer's recipes and my family does too. What an asset to the culinary arts!
Kitchen Coach Weekend Cooking.......2005-03-24
I was delighted with this book. The format is contemporary and easy to use. The recipes are interesting and extremely delicious. Last weekend I made the Cinnamon coffee cake, the marinated shrimp and the chipotle glazed short ribs to rave reviews from family and friends. The book is loaded with recipes I cannot wait to try. I bought Jennifers first book and cooked almost every receipe in it. Her food is really wonderful and I have great sucess with these recipes. I highly recommend it, for busy families who want to eat well!
A wonderful, accessible cookbook!.......2005-03-14
I had the good fortune of taking a class with Jennifer based on this book. Everything starts with filling your pantry, as she directs in the beginning, and the rest is easy! The recipes are GREAT (shrimp and white bean sage chili, short ribs, ice cream cake roll and Mom's fruit pizza are "must-makes") and not very time consuming. Jennifer's enthusiasm comes through in her great commentaries and explanations. Definitely buy this cookbook - you WILL use it!
Very Good Book for the Occasional Entertainer and Cook.......2005-03-10
`Weekend Cooking' by cooking teacher and writer, Jennifer Bushman, is one of a series of books set up under the rubric of `Kitchen Coach'.
This is the kind of book which is most useful to a non-foodie who may have no more than a dog-eared copy of `The Joy of Cooking' and her church's fund raising cookbook in her kitchen. To someone with a collection of twenty or more cookbooks, this book will be a waste of space and money, since such serious or semiserious Food Network addicts will probably know most of the support material in this book already, and they will have more than enough books to supply them with good recipes when they have the time to cook something special.
The `Weekend Cooking' notion of the title is just a bit misleading. The book is actually oriented towards the niches in people's lives where they have a little extra time and inclination to cook something special for some special event. While these situations most commonly happen on the weekend, the book actually has a broader appeal. Unlike some other books which tout the weekend as an opportunity to cook ahead in order to salt away meals in the freezer for weeknights, this book is more oriented to whole, multicourse meals when a family has time to sit down together and spend more than fifteen minutes at the dinner table (although the book does contain brief chapter on cooking for the week ahead).
Part of the reason this book is a waste of time, space, and money for the experienced amateur cook is that it spends a sizable amount of pages on general tips for getting your kitchen organized and stocked for serious cooking. Even the least experienced foodie will have gone through this exercise and be well on their way to working efficiently in the kitchen.
One aspect of the book that enhances it's billing as a `weekend' cookbook is the amount of space dedicated to grilling. The kitchen tune-up introduction includes an inventory of grilling equipment and a relatively large number of the recipes are either specifically designed for the outdoor grill or can easily be done on a grill rather than in a saute pan. One of the best features of the book may be its good selection of burger and sandwich recipes. I'm quite happy with my classic Julia Child recipe, but a family with three kids will probably need some decent variety in their burger lineup. It is also a great addition to have a good recipe for the New Orleans classic Muffoletta sandwich without having to invest in a Cajun cookbook.
In fact, the whole book seems to be oriented towards the well-equipped kitchen, as it recommends, with only a brief nod to the expense, that the well equipped kitchen include a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, a digital kitchen scale, an immersion blender, and electric ice cream maker, and a fondue set. The problem with this lineup is that it may turn off part of the potential audience for this book. That is, those people who want to cook occasionally and need a cookbook which will give them thorough directions without requiring a lot of equipment which may be used once or twice a year. One does not need a digital scale unless you are doing serious baking and you don't need both an immersion blender and a Waring blender. The Waring blender is far more useful than the stick blender unless you make lots of soups and don't make mixed drinks, smoothies, and milk shakes.
With regard to the quality of the individual recipes, I find them very, very good. The recipe for `Hot and Spicy Chili with Beans' matches my favorite from Tom Valenti's `Soups, Stews, and One Pot Meals'. The yeast bread recipes use active dry yeast, which may not be the easiest, but it gives the best quality for the effort. The biscuit recipe seems straight out of Jim Villas' southern home cooking gospel. The grilled London Broil recipe was appropriately simple, but not as simple as what you can find from James Beard. My other arguments with this recipe is that I don't think it really needs a 24 hour marinade to get the appropriate flavor and it is actually better to start searing the meat while it is still cool from the fridge if you want a rare inside. I was especially happy with the number of good vegetable recipes, especially the mushroom and eggplant recipes and the good potato recipes that do not involve a lot of added fat. The international range of recipes is also very respectable, with voices from France, Italy, Mexico and China. I also liked the very good selection of soup recipes.
The most remarkable oversight in this book is that there is very little here about cooking for breakfast. What can be more utterly weekendish than a long, leisurely breakfast with eggs or pancakes, biscuits, sausage, and home fries! I would easily give up the cook ahead, grilling, and fondue chapters for a really good chapter on omelets, French toast, and griddlecakes. There is a recipe for a `country frittata', but it is definitely a dish for entertaining. The recipes for smoothies and scones are good, but it would have been so nice to get more on classic breakfast fare.
My primary message to people interested in this book is the fact that this is called `Weekend Cooking' because it is NOT fast and easy. It is a good book for the novice who wants to do something special, but `Wolfgang Puck Makes It Easy' may be as good or better a choice if you have no interest in grilling or entertaining.
The Logical Next Step.......2005-02-13
Weekend Cooking is the logical next step for those of us interested in getting a great meal on the table. The "journey style" instructions make it a breeze to follow for anyone who can "walk and chew gum". Even where I have had failures in the past, this has brought all of those to an end. Three cheers for Jennifer Bushman.

History of typewriters.......2007-05-07
Michael Adler is a recognized authority on and collector of antique typewriters and has produced an excellent volume with thorough text, drawings and many color photographs of antique machines, printed on coated paper. The book also has a good bibliography and index. If you have any interest whatsoever in old typewriters and related machines, you should own this book Antique Typewriters: From Creed to QWERTY.
Great photos, a good choice.......1998-12-29
Great photos, but not much more information than The Writing Machine. You will find magnificent color photos of nearly all the collectible typewriters. Prices sometimes seems not to reflect market conditions.

Not Impressed.......2003-11-06
I was not impressed with this book in the least. Maybe it was because I had just finished reading Chris Pye's book Wood Carving Tools Marerial & Equipment. Now this book is about another form of carving but it is many times superior in handling its topic.
An example is in Barton's book he covers wood selection, and finishing in roughly 2 pages in Pye's book he covers the material in 40 pages covering the issue in far greater detail.
This book contains very little instruction (less than 1/5 of the pages). There are a few illustations on technique but they are very lacking.
Now if you are really interested in looking at examples of completed work or you just need some templates for lettering, then this is your book. There is also a section detailing how to scribe out various rosette forms.
Overall, I can not recommend this book as a "technique" book but it makes a good book to use for the templates and rosettes.
The best place to start........1999-02-01
I learned to chip carve from reading this book. The patterns and work shown are somewhat simple and are easily attainable. Barton's descriptions and explainations are clear and if you follow what he does, it inspires enough confidence to continue.
Beginners guide to chip carving.......1997-11-30
A good basic book about chip carving. Covers selection of wood, tools and their maintenance, technique, and a brief history of chip carving. Also includes a variety of patterns.

Lots of fun with feng shui!! .......2004-08-18
As a college student, I found Feng Shui with What You have an insightful book on how to make any living space harmonious without breaking the bank. The book contained many great tips on how to create a stylish yet comforting environment using what you already own. After using the remedies found in the book to properly feng shui my apartment, it transformed into a more welcoming space. The book combines ancient feng shui methods with contemporary trends. By making simple changes to the placement of my furniture and by adding touches of specific colors, my apartment and the mood of all those in the apartment changed for the better. I would recommend Feng Shui with What You Have to anyone looking to make an improvement to not only their living space but their life in general.
Feng Shui without fear!.......2004-07-07
I have browsed other books about feng shui that have made the subject seem impossibly arcane as well as very impractical for a westerner. FENG SHUI WITH WHAT YOU HAVE is accessible and clear; it not only explains what feng shui is and how it works as a philosophy, but also how you can put it to practical work in your home. One of the beauties of the book is that it's full of advice whose implementation requires only your attention and some time--you can make many positive improvements without spending a cent. I keep going back to the book as I tackle one problem spot or another in my home. In the long term relationship between you and your space, this book is a keeper.

Book Description
American Corporate Identity is the premier annual focusing on logos and their applications. Since the first book appeared in 1986, designers from all over the world have made American Corporate Identity a major source of creative inspiration.
American Corporate Identity 2001 reflects the business climate at the beginning of the new millennium -- for example, there are a number of designs for "dot-com" companies featured in this 16th annual in the series. (Interestingly, the term "dot-com" didn't exist just a few years ago.
Again this year, the annual features seven categories:LogosComplete Identity ProgramPackage DesignLetterheadsCorporate Identity ManualsSignage & Environmental GraphicsCorporate Brochures
Work selected for this book is the result of a competion in which design firms form all over America submitted their best creative output. Approximately 20% of the entries submitted were chosen for publication.
The materials included in this book are all, for one reason or another, "world-class" designs; this is as it should be for a book that has distribution literally all over the globe.

Book Description
Lillian Lil Hardin was a pioneer for women in jazz. After studying at Fisk University, the Chicago College of Music, and the New York College of Music, Lil joined Sugar Johnny's Creole Orchestra and then moved on to Freddie Keppard's Original Creole Orchestra. In the 1920's Lil began playing in King Oliver's world-famous Creole Jazz Band, becoming the first female jazz musician of renown. She was well-established in Chicago as a pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader before she met and married Louis Armstrong in 1924. She was the only member of Armstrong's group that could read music. Based on extensive research, Dickerson's stunning biography is the first to examine this musical iconoclast's life and career.

Amazing Woman.......2003-09-04
Lil Armstrong has got to be the most amazing woman in American music history.
From reading this book, I learned things about jazz history that I did not know. I never realized how dependent Louis Armstrong was on his wife for his success. Not only did she write his early songs, she shaped him into the world-class performer that he became in later years.
I was also surprised to learn how sleazy the music busness was in those days. The author does an excellent job of documenting the birth of jazz in an atmosphere of crime and racial intolerance. Lil was victimized her entire life. Especially despicable is a certain man who took advantage of her good nature and her artistic talent. What he did to Lil is awful.
If you are not moved by this story, you are not human.
Great book....so when is the movie coming out?
Lil would have hated this flawed effort........2003-05-05
This ranks among the most shallow, factually incorrect jazz biographies I have read. As someone who knew Lil Armsrong well, I was struck by how far off the mark this alleged portrait of her is. The author hasn't a clue when it comes to Lil's personality, the fabric of her life, and her place in jazz. Lil deserves better than this hack job, which I gave one star because none is not an option.
a missed opportunity.......2002-12-27
As a lifelong jazz researcher, I was indeed thrilled when I discovered the first attempt at a Lil Hardin-Armstrong bio, but I must say that this one was a disappointment. Resources for jazz research are richer than they have ever been and jazz history books are finally starting to rise to the level of quality scholarship. but that is not evident here. The author seems to have assembled much of the previously published information on Lil, drawn some odd conclusions (exposing a lack of knowledge of early jazz music) and left it at that. Lil was a significant presence in the 1920's Chicago scene and in the life of her second husband, Louis; she was a fine composer and an above-average instrumentalist. She most certainly did not, as the author suggests, write out Louis' magnificent introduction to West End Blues!
There is also a strange, and somewhat unfair characterization of Louis Armstrong in this book. While much is made of Louis' infidelities, little or nothing is mentioned of Lil's (which have been documented elsewhere). Such inconsistencies damage the credibility of the book.
I love Lil Armstrong's music, and I wish that there was a better biography of her out there. She certainly deserves better!
Dickerson's JUST FOR A THRILL.......2002-04-18
James L. Dickerson focuses upon Lillian 'Lil' Hardin as a
highly educated, multi-talented, and prestigious individual from
stardom in the early part of the Twentieth Century--when it was
not "cool" to be both a black female and a vocalist/instrumental-
ist--to her last recording. The biographer depicts Lil as one who
was willing to neglect opportunities that would foster her own
additional success in order to promote her husband, Louis Arm-
strong in his musical endeavors as a soloist and instrumentalist.
The conflicts in management, the shifts from city to city, and
the rocky marriage, which eventually involved "the other woman,"
took a toll on the relationship between Lil and Louis. However,
as Dickerson vividly emphasizes, Lil never lost her love for her
musical soulmate, with whom she nurtured their only child--jazz.
Lil Hardin's impressive musical career.......2002-04-12
Just For A Thrill: Lil Hardin Armstrong, First Lady Of Jazz by James L. Dickerson is the energetic, informative and compelling biography of Lillian "Lil" Hardin (1898-1971), one of the most sought-after female jazz pianists in Chicago in her day and the wife of Louis Armstrong until their divorce in 1938. Lil Hardin's impressive musical career, trailblazing achievements and exciting love of music are all recorded in this first-class biography. Just For A Thrill is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended contribution to the growing library of biographies and memoirs of the men and women who significantly contributed to the development of jazz -- America's unique contribution to the world of music.
