Book Description
"An entire book of good stories. . . . [Leung] gains trust the old-fashioned way-through confidence, craftsmanship and compassion. There are no shortcuts here, no tricks or gimmicks, no glib patinas to conceal weak underpinnings. . . . This is a book about loss, twined irrevocably with hope, a hope that surges below the surface of all life. . . . Read [it] and see a bold new writer making himself vulnerable on the page. He gives us all hope."-Chris Offutt
Born to a Chinese father and Euro-American mother, Brian Leung is a native of California, where he is now an assistant professor at California State University, Northridge. He received an M.F.A in creative writing from Indiana University.
Customer Reviews:
I loved this book!.......2004-07-07
It's the best, most engaging collection of short stories that I've read in years. It was sweet and dark, with very diverse and believable characters. It's a must-read.
The BEST.......2004-07-04
We read this for a book club and I must say it's an amazing collection full of remarkable characters. The stories hold together thematically, but have distinct voices on their own. I'm anxious to see Leung's next book.
Better Luck Tomorrow.......2004-07-01
Read Julie Orringer's "How to Breathe Underwater" or Neil LaBute's "Seconds of Pleasure" instead for a better debut collection of short stories. If you read the last half a dozen or so paragraphs, the theme of each story becomes too apparent and resolves itself too neatly. The characterization lacks complexity.
unique and disturbingly entertaining.......2004-05-10
Leung, a teacher at California State University Northridge and recipient of the Mary McCarthy Prize for Short Fiction has written this collection of well-crafted narratives with unique characters in well-constructed settings. At a time when so many stories are hyped and filled with the antics of celebutantes, it is refreshing to read about singular characters who are far from cliché. The author wields his adjectives the way a surgeon controls a scalpel. His descriptions of the California skies and landscapes are hallowed and resplendent. Some stories are like grenades. The full impact of the scenes did not hit me until a few minutes after finishing each story's final paragraph. The collection's title suggests that the stories are about love, yet the cover art is of a noose. The stories concern quiet, unspoken, suppressed loves and losses of a different sort - the type with inner conversations that are never vocalized. Some characters think they are filled with insights, but actually know nothing; and others who long for connections with other people, even though those people are standing next to them in the same room. So much is conveyed in the silences between the stories' vulnerable characters. In one story, the people who walk across hot coals of a firewalk numb themselves to the feelings and truth, just as family members do in everyday life. In another story, a family that never speaks what they fell in meaningful words, ponder whether they have to put their pet "to sleep." In another, an aging archeologist is more at home digging up buried artifacts or leaving them buried than digging up her own family memories. In my favorite, "White Hand," a son who is trying to be devoted feels that he is a tourist in his own culture. He goes through the motions, but like a reptile, is it just a skin that will be shed?
Great Writer and Great Reader!.......2004-05-10
I saw Brian Leung read from this book recently and I bought a copy. The story he read was amazing, and I had hoped that the others would be similarly solid. I wasn't dissapointed. I could't put this book down. I would usually read a story a night, but I stayed up all night reading this book cover to cover. Thanks for writing such a great book!

Primordial Special Investigations Agency.......2006-03-02
This book was a good read and the story line was relatiively believable. It was interestingly set in 3 locations. The description of some of the scenes were very explosive and had me reaching for my husband!! I liked the strong independent woman who was game for anything to save her granfather, I felt the lead male role was slightly over matcho, but could imagine they are out there.
I may try another of Ms Agnews books, just to see if I like her continued style, this was my first book by her and I felt I have read better.
Truth be told I would still read it, so give it a go as there are great scenes, maybe just not enough!!
Primordial: Special Investigations Agency Series.......2005-06-07
When Dr. Keira Jessop is rescued from a drive by shooting by Zane Spinella she never expected to find out that he had only been in the right place to save her because he had been spying on her for the Special Investigations Agency (SIA). The SIA believe that Keira's grandfather and possibly even Keira herself have been dealing in stolen artifacts. In order to clear her grandfather and herself from these accusations Keira is now forced to travel to Puerto Azul to locate a very special statue which is said to have great power when both pieces are fitted together. Even worse she's forced to work with Zane. Zane had desired Keira from the moment he first saw her but he doesn't trust easily and the fact that Keira is suspected of illegal dealings makes it doubly hard for him. But that doesn't stop the passion from boiling over between them. Now, Zane has to protect Keira while deciding if he can trust her or not.
Ms. Agnew has given us another wonderful addition to her Special Investigations Series. Zane is a true alpha male with a soft side and Kiera is no push over. Packed with passion and adventure Primordial is one book that readers will want to add to their collections.

Not only does the jungle steam but so does this story.......2005-04-24
Keira Jessop is forced to take on a mission for the Special Investigations Agency to clear her and her grandfather's names when they are suspected of stealing and selling artifacts on the black market. SIA are looking for a particular artifact suspected of being in the hands of Ludwig Haan, a man they suspect of other crimes including murder. But Keira is not in Puerto Azul alone, agent Zane Spinella, the man who saved Keira's life one time before, is there. Between the two of them they make the jungle even steamier but can they find the artifact, clear Keira's name, and solved the murder maybe they can with a little help.
Book Description
The hit animated TV shows Beast Wars and Beast Machines introduced a whole new generation to the Transformers - a race of robots able to shift form and become vehicles, weaponry and hardware. Now, at last, the original stories of those `robots in disguise' can be seen again in their world-shaking glory.
The war with Unicron reaches its apocalyptic conclusion, but even if the Transformers win they lose. Their world, Cybertron, is coming apart, shuddering in its death throes, the fragile alliance between the Autobots and the Decepticons is on shaky ground, and the inhabitants of Earth tremble before the power of the utterly insane creature known as Galvatron. With Optimus Prime missing in battle it might finally be the day when all hope is gone!

Book Description
Written by the author of the beloved best-seller, Each Day a New Beginning, this collection of meditations reinforces the key concepts from the book A Course in Miracles, the modern spiritual classic that has changed the lives of millions.
Customer Reviews:
Great Daily Reading.......2007-07-06
Very good book for daily meditation. If you are in recovery or in need of spiritual uplifting, this is the book for you. We have given this book to many of our friends and co-workers as a gift and have had very positive feedback. The daily meditations give you something to think about and work on each day to become a better person.
Excellent resource.......2006-02-23
For anyone who is a student of the Course in Miracles, or if you just happen to believe that the basic principles of CIM are worth integrating into your lifestyle, this book is a great resource. The concepts are brief but clear. My husband and I have worn out our first copy, and we keep extra copies around to give as gifts.
Daily Meditations for Practing the Course.......2006-02-17
Again, I have read this and still do. My daughter read parts of mine and liked it ,so I bought it for her.
Daily Meditations for Practicing The Course.......2005-10-19
This book is a reference that I always go back to. When I feel myself getting particularly stressed in my job or my home life, I remember the lessons I've learned from the Course in Miracles and I will pick this book up and open to a page, read the lesson and apply it to the current situation or issue in my life. It reminds me to be grateful and keeps me on track. It is not your conventional way of thinking, but it makes so much sense if you open yourself to the principles and meditations it offers. I have it on my desk for easy access on a daily basis.
Do not seek to change the Course.......2004-03-29
I understand why Course students read these kind of books: ACIM can be quite confusing. Jesus, in his Course, advises students NOT to change the Course, but the ego will have its way, thus a mountain of these types of books in the marketplace. If you are a confused ACIM student, go buy Kenneth Wapnick's books and tapes. You will STILL have to put in effort, he offers no shortcuts (the Course IS a shortcut) but your confusion will subside and you too will make real progress as a student.

Interesting and creative recipes........2006-08-16
I like this book for the mostly small quantity snacks. Other books that offer recipes for snacks are meant for 4 people or more.
This little gem literally has recipes for 1 or two people. The recipes are healthy and uses ingredients that most people have in their pantry. Most of the recipes take about 15 minutes to make. This is definitely a book for the Foodie.
It is a good read and filled with humor.
the official handbook for all species of night owl.......2003-01-15
It's funny to realize that there were really no cookbooks for this "meal" that everyone enjoys. So I got this book, and there was everything from dishes to serve the kids' friends at slumber parties to great recipes for making those too expensive power bars that are perfect for breakfast. I particularly like using this book's recipes for my cocktail parties (I first saw it reviewed in Playboy of all places, because they loved the sexy dishes for two that are featured in the book), since the whole idea behind this guide is simple, appealing, small treats that you can cook up without a lot of fuss. It emphasized improvization. Stocking a few key items (even some new ones that are very versatile). And having fun with this quirky, miniature meal. And the writing is just as fun-loving. Very witty, and the perfect gift for college kids, newlyweds, or anyone looking to expand their repertoire of casual, satisfying bites.

Dream Kitchens.......2002-01-15
If you love to cook and your kitchen is your favorite room in the house, then you are going to absolutely love this book. I was fascinated by pictures of Elizabeth David's kitchen which is not at all what I expected.
First you get to assess your needs. What is it you really want from your kitchen? There is an amazing kitchen layout on pg. 10 where the dining area, cooking zone and a fireplace all blend together to create a warm cozy setting. Who does not imagine a fire burning as you are kneading bread or icing cookies in the winter.
Various questions are asked and you can check off a list to determine your most pertinent desires. The number of people you are going to cook for, how many meals you cook at home, the type of foods you use and how you shop will determine the type and amount of storage space you need in your kitchen.
There is a special section that helps you envision how your kitchen will look with the use of graph paper. Of course there are plenty of computer programs. This is explained in detail in the "Plan Your Design" chapter. Useful Addresses on pg. 82 gives you not only the mailing address and phone number, they also include the website address. There is graph paper you can photocopy if you wish.
Kitchen Elements is quite the chapter and you consider flooring, wall coverings, cabinet finishes, stoves, ovens and eating areas. I wasn't quite that enthusiastic about the unfitted kitchen plan. The Family Kitchen plan is more friendly, and it is simply the best way to cook and entertain all at once. Plus, it has a fireplace.
Have fun planning your dream kitchen!

Great idea book.......2000-07-05
This was a most unusual book. It covered the material thoroughly, but in contrast to the many other fine kitchen design books I have, this one has 3D colored drawings that helped tie the great photographs together in my minds eye. I found it to be a great idea book that brought form and function together very well.
Really useful kitchen remodel book.......2000-06-21
This book has a wide variety of practicle ideas for how to design different styles of kitchens. It deals with everything from color choices to placement of appliances. It also has a wonderful list of supplier resources. I have been looking for a good book that provides not only style ideas but practicle information. This one covers everything from, qualities of flooring and counter surfaces, unique approaches to storage, and appliance placement. It's a great book and a real bargin.

Book Description
Leona Tamarkin recounts her ordeal as a Jewish refugee during the First World War and her life as a young immigrant in America after 1920. Tamarkin's narrative rings with determination, will to live, and boldness, even within confining circumstances. First conveyed as a letter from a grandmother to her then fifteen-year-old granddaughter, Lizzie, the memoir offers a story too painful to say out loud but too important to be left unsaid. More than simply a family story, Tamarkin's written words bring immediacy and humanity to distant historical events.
Customer Reviews:
An insightful book for readers of all ages.......2001-05-26
I enjoyed this book on many levels. First, because I recently met the author, Leona Tamarkin who is now 95 years old. Reading her book has given me a rare multidimensional view of her life and experiences. After working in the geriatric field for three decades I view this book as a reminder that older people are "living legends" and are the sum total of their life experiences. It also supplied the details of my own grandmother's life in Poland before WWII that were too painful for her to share. Finally, as a parent and Hebrew school educator, I feel that this book, which is simply written and written from the youthful recollections of the author, has the same universal appeal to a young student as The Diary of Ann Frank. While only alluding to war and the historical circumstances of the times, it chronicles the details and emotions of Leona's life in Poland and later as an immigrant to the United States as a young woman.
