Book Description
This haunting coming-of-age story about a girl growing up in wartime Iraq was the subject of heated controversy when it was published in the Middle East; now in English, it offers American readers a rare chance to experience an Iraqi childhood.
The frank, determined narrator is a schoolgirl living in a small town in the Iraqi countryside when the book opens. Torn between the cultures of her parents, she loves the simple pleasures of provincial life in her father’s native land but, at the urging of her English mother, she is thrown into the study of Western music and ballet and becomes a devoted dancer by the time the family relocates to Baghdad. Even as the city around her is transformed by the blackouts and
deprivations of the war between Iran and Iraq, she propels herself passionately through the full range of teenage discovery. The death of her father, her first love affair, and her mother’s unexpected illness carry her into adulthood and ultimately to London, where she confronts, with surprising results, the other half of her East–West legacy.
A Sky So Close is a captivating look at contemporary Iraq from the inside out—a stunning re-creation of the surreality of life during wartime, and the story of a young woman coming to terms with the seemingly unbridgeable cultures from which she is formed.

An Unusual View.......2007-09-03
This child's eye view - and then young woman's eye view - of the world reveals much about the narrator. Curiously, although we absorb the narrator's passions in detail, we never learn her name.
Her early childhood, in a bicultural and hopelessly disfunctional family, is set in a rural area of Iraq. Much of the narration is addressed to the father, with whom the small child has a warm relationship. How the child makes her way through difficulties of her family life, as well as comes to grips with the life/death cycles of human existence around her, gives this novel great power. This same tension - a difficult family life and even more difficult world situation - recurs in the second section of the book, set in England. The young woman struggles through a relationship with her mother, who must deal with widowhood and a grueling fight with cancer. Thrown into the mix are blighted love affairs, the Iran Iraq War, the First Gulf War and sanctions against Iraq. Horrors of the war are contrasted to sugary military communiques claiming the Iraqi forces are "succeeding."
How the child/woman observes and handles battles within and without is truly remarkable. I found the writing sensitive, evocative and refreshingly frank. An unusual and beautifully written novel.
Clouds on the horizon.......2007-08-14
A friend of the author gave this book to me in 2002, while clouds were gathering over Iraq. I read it with interest then to glean from it something about a country that was then shut off to me. Two years later, I found myself in the US Army brigade responsible for Zafraniya itself, no longer a sleepy town lying outside Baghdad, but more of a congested suburb. I did not have time to "tour" Zafraniya to look for the beer brewery or some of the other landmarks, but I certainly got the sense that the world captured in the book has vanished.
This book takes us to a time when not just Iraq, but the whole Middle East was experiencing the most recent high-water mark of outside cultural influences. The closing of the dance school acts as an analogy to the gradual closing off of lines of cultural communication with the Middle East, of cultural isolation. It's an isolation imposed by the people there, not those outside, largely out of distrust and misunderstanding. All this will pass in time, but neither the Middle East nor the outside world will be able to regain the curiousity - rather than the suspicion - with which they regarded each other until the 1970's. Betool's book captures the end of that period and the transition to the current one.
Worthy and timely novel by Iraqi first time author.......2003-12-16
"A Sky So Close" is many things at once: a girl's coming-of-age story, an elegy to dead parents, a historical chronicle of life in war-torn Iraq, and a meditation on cross-cultural relationships in an increasingly complicated world. The unnamed narrator writes the novel as a kind of cathartic journal with her dead Iraqi father as the "you" she often refers to explicitly as her ideal reader. Her British mother is also central to this coming-of-age tale, as is her parents sad, failed, cross-cultural marriage.
Despite a few instances of forced/unconvincing dialogue (this might be the translator's fault), I generally found Khedairi's novel touching and engaging. It also has the added value of being an insider's look at Iraq, a country that is much in American/European news these days. The novel avoids explicit politics, but certainly the politics of gender and war permeate the story in any case, even though the narrator's very conscious disengagement helps her avoid clear political pronouncements.
The strength of the novel surely rests in the little details the girl notices about life in rural Iraq in the 70s and 80s, and in the portrayal of her warm relationship with her father. I remember hearing that cross-cultural experts often say that a single novel is better than reading ten non-fiction books about a place, if you really want to get to know it, and Khedairi's book would seem to foot that bill well. One quibble I have with this aspect, though, is that the narrator's extended family is strangely absent from the entire novel. Her Iraqi father has moved back to his home country with his British wife and child, but not a single relative figures in their lives at all? The same is true of her mother's non-existent English relatives when she moves to London with her late in the book. I think Khedairi does this to highlight the sense of isolation in the post-modern, post-colonial world, but I found this one aspect ill-conceived.
A series of insights on contemporary Iraq.......2001-09-12
This story of a girl growing up in wartime Iraq sparked controversy when it was published in the Middle East: now English readers have a chance to experience Betool Khedairi's A Sky So Close, a coming of age story of an Iraqi childhood. The result is a series of insights on contemporary Iraq which no history coverage could hope to match for depth.
A Life in Iraq.......2001-07-29
Born of an Iraqi father and an English mother, the narrator grows up in an atmosphere of discord and dis-ease, never fully belonging to either culture. Joys that she experiences end tragically. Peaceful afternoons spent with her father stop with his untimely death. Her lover goes to war. People die, victims of custom and superstition as much as disease. And finally, she leaves the scenes of destruction in war-torn Iraq for more deaths in London. Horror is piled upon horror, but the narrator remains anonymous, detached from the reader. This novel is a disturbing look at life in a country with which few of its readers may be familiar.

From the Keeper Shelf.......2005-04-12
I pulled this from my keeper shelf when I couldn't find anything new I wanted to read, and I loved it as much the second time. I was shocked when I checked Amazon and saw the other review--but I guess that's the problem with redemption stories. Either you get them or you don't. In fact, I have to applaud Ms. Justiss for tackling the problem of redeeming a man with a seemingly closed mind. We see it all the time, people who judge others based on stereotypes without ever going any deeper, and that's why I love this story so much. It isn't easy and it isn't always pretty, but that's what makes the ending that much more satisfying. It's lesson to take with you.
Oh, and the idea that "idiotish" isn't a word? It may not appear in American dictionaries, but the reviewer could easily find it in the Oxford English dictionary. As for me, I'm off to reread another Julia Justiss title and anxiously await her next release.
Mediocre and flawed.......2005-01-21
Justiss manages to combine a strong heroine with a boorish, though supposedly honorable, hero -- a hero you want to like, but often cannot because his actions are often reprehensible. It makes the reader wonder how the heroine can love this man who treats her with such little respect.
Justiss also makes far too many grammatical and other writing errors for the reading to be smooth or the writing of top quality. By the way, Ms. Justiss, there's no such word as "idiotish." There are also a number of historical gaffes and plot errors (Has the author even seen a waltz? It doesn't appear so since the stance is repeatedly described incorrectly.) There is also far too much exposition, too much "telling" rather than "showing," making many segments of the book remarkably slow.
To be fair, the love scenes are decently written, and there moments of witty repartee and romance. Unfortunately, the cons outweigh the pros, and the moments when you think the potential might be realized after all never come to fruition. One & 1/2 stars.

What a lovely adventure story!.......2002-12-14
This book is a truly enjoyable read. Sophie Delamanse loses her family to the plague and then joins the musketeers disguised as her brother and determined to win honor in his name. She is found out by Count Lamotte, the man she was to have married. And it goes from there...The adventures of serving in the King's guard and the gradual changes in Lamotte's attitude toward women as soldiers are well done. I gave this one four stars because the emotional side of the characters, especially Sophie's reactions to her family's deaths, could have been explored more fully. All in all, this was a very good read and I look forward to the sequel!

Customer Reviews:
Fun but frustrating.......2006-09-01
Being a major Star Trek fan for many years, I was really looking forward to this crossword puzzle book. And, in most ways, it is enjoyable to work these puzzles. But, there is Star Trek information in these puzzles that are wrong, especially certain spellings. I have checked multiple entries against Star Trek reference material that I have and from the official Star Trek web-site, and sometimes these puzzle clues/answers are wrong. Also, as mentioned by someone else, these puzzles are very challenging. If you don't have some detailed ST reference material, you will probably be pretty frustrated. Some of the answers to the entries are two or more words, but the author doesn't tell you that. And some of the non-Star Trek questions are very, very obscure. But, I've learned alot! I'm just not sure that I'll buy any more of this author's crossword books.
As Spock would say "Fascinating".......2003-09-15
Although crossword puzzle books aren't my normal fare, being a fan of all things Star Trek and being a collector of Star Trek treasures automatically put this on the list of things to purchase.
This book of Star Trek crossword puzzles will definitely entertain you to no end trying to come up with the trivia that is included in the fifty crossword puzzles contained in this, the first of what will most likely be many Star Trek Crossword books. Fear not too much though, for if you do run into a particular question that is too much of a stumper, the answer sheet to all fifty puzzles is in the back. For the "devout" trekker, if they cannot come up with the answer off the top of their head, they can and will most likely have their Star Trek "Companions" and "Encyclopedias" nearby.
High praise to John M. Samson, Sam Bellotto Jr. and Raymond Hamel for bringing this, the first of many, Star Trek Crossword puzzle books to the Star Trek genre. {ssintrepid}
Book Description
Why do so many women of faith have such a strong aversion to feminism? And why do so many feminists have an ardent mistrust of religion? These questions are at the heart of Helen LaKelly Hunt's illuminating look at the alliance between spiritual conviction and social action. Intelligent and heartfelt, Faith and Feminism offers a perceptive look at the lives of five spirited and spiritual women of history, women who combined their undying faith with feminist beliefs and who made the world a better place by doing so.
St. Teresa of Ávila, a woman whose bravery in confronting her shadows gave her the strength to connect with the world and live a life of divine action.
Lucretia Mott, a Quaker minister, who rose from her quiet upbringing to become a passionate speaker and activist working tirelessly on behalf of justice and peace.
Sojourner Truth, a Christian slave, who spoke out with unwavering courage to claim her God-given rightful place as an African American and a woman.
Emily Dickinson, an extraordinary poet, who touched the world with her ability to capture and transform the experience of suffering.
Dorothy Day, a radical journalist, who lived a life of voluntary poverty as a way of expressing her passion for the Christian faith and care for those in need.
A remarkable book that focuses on the idea that spirituality and feminism are really different expressions of the same impulse to make life more whole, Faith and Feminism offers a powerful catalyst for reflecting on our sense of self -- and for living and loving according to our deepest values.
Customer Reviews:
Good Idea.....Not Well Executed.......2006-01-14
I was very excited about this book when I found it. As a woman of faith, I thought it would be interesting to see examples of women who had combined their feminist viewpoints with their faith. How they battled a world dominated by men with their religion as well. However, the book did not live up to the promise. The book is made to feature five women: St. Teresa of Avila, Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Emily Dickinson and Dorothy Day. While each story is compelling, it is all to brief. Each women have one chapter each, which gives basically a brief life story. It does not really go into depth how these women implemented their faith into their quest for women's right. It seemed more of an overview, designed for a class to discuss. Not for the solitary reader.
Also, I was not pleased with the use of the Imago Relationship Theory in the book. This is a book about feminism and faith, not about couple therapy. Just didn't seem to fit the book.
The little chapters on the women are interesting, however I was hoping for a more in depth discussion, than the overview presented in this book. Maybe in the future, the author will go back to this topic and revisit these women in better detail.

Customer Reviews:
The most delicious wine book.......2006-08-27
Hugh Johnson's marvelous book in a partial answer to a question that few of us have had the sense to ask. While many of us will spend valuable hours wondering: `which wine?' we rarely ask `why wine?'
What's the big deal? Why so many books, why such intense feeling? Wine is just the fermented juice of grapes. Yes, and music is just organized noise and sex is merely one of the ways in which organisms ensure perpetuation of their type.
The reason for the passion isn't to be found in alcohol alone. Almost any sugary solution will support fermentation, and it seems that just about every possible sweet liquid has been fermented from time to time. An amateur winemakers' guide in my library lists recipes for the production of wines from almonds, apples, bananas, barley, beetroot, birch sap, cloves, clover, eggplant, guava, lemons, oak leaves, orange juice, parsley, parsnips, peapods, squash, tea, tomatoes, wallflowers, yarrow and yes, to complete the alphabet, zinnias.
These 'wines'are all possible, but none of them exist. In fact, we restrict our winemaking to just a few varieties of grape. Why?
Aside from the many economic advantages, the fermented juice of grapes is delicious. At its most common, it's a fresh and fruity drink that quenches the thirst and gladdens the heart. At its most exalted, the basic flavors of the grape are transformed by fermentation and aging into a symphony of aromas and tastes and lingering associations. Both the bountiful nature of grape vines and the enormous appeal of their fermented fruit's juice has led civilized man to attach a lot of meaning to wine.
Johnson's book, a slimmed down version of the earlier Vintage , not only reminds us that the question of wine's importance needs to be asked, it goes a long way to providing an answer. His range of reference is impressive and his writing-witting and incisive-is impeccable. When you're ready to try to understand how wine attained its place in the modern world, there's no better place to start than this book.
Lynn Hoffman, author of The New Short Course in Wine
Vintage Writing.......2002-12-28
This is one of the most comprehensive and certainly one of the most enjoyable books on wine in any language. Combining excellent prose with impressive scholarship, Mr. Johnson offers a scintillating and often enlightening history of the world's best beverage. Strongly recommended for the historian or wine enthusiast.
Normally I dislike Hugh Johnson's work.......1999-08-24
However, I must say that I did enjoy this book. While one reviewer here didn't seem to be too interested in the history of wine, I found it very interesting, so interesting in fact that I am giving my paperback version to a friend and purchasing the hardback version for myself.
What I enjoy about the historical approach is that it helps me understand just how modern wine styles evolved. For example, seeing the influence of the Napoleanic wars on British purchasing and subsequent development of new wines (like Port) was interesting.
Lots of historic information, tedious presentation.......1999-02-21
It's a history book! If you love Hugh Johnson and love history, you'll love this. Well I love WINE and really like Hugh Johnson and I can't seem to finish this book!
Customer Reviews:
It has aged but, not too well.......2007-01-26
If you are interested in the history of wine it is a fine and interesting book. It was published in 1989 and the wine world has changed it needs to be revised. It does a poor job on wines of the new world; still it is a book worth reading.
The most beautiful wine book I ever read (and Ive read many).......1998-04-20
A real masterpiece (and an obvious work of love)! Combining extensive research and scholarship with wit and eloquence, the book traces wine and wine making from ancient times to our day. It is both the "Story of Wine" and the history of wine. The story is told in the context of its geographical, cultural and technical background. Exquisite pictures and maps abound. A truly extraordinary book!
Book Description
The previously untold story of the Zenith Trans-Oceanic, the world's most romantic and expensive series of portable radios. Long a companion of kings, presidents, transoceanic yachtsmen and world explorers, the Trans-Oceanic was also carried into battle by American troops in three wars. Its great popularity in spite of a very high price can be laid at the feet of several generations of armchair travelers who used the shortwave capabilities of the Trans-Oceanic as a window on the world. With access to the Zenith corporate archives and their long experience as radio enthusiasts and writers for both the popular and scholarly press, Professors Bryant and Cones present the engrossing stories of the development and use of the Trans-Oceanic throughout its forty year life. They present a wealth of never-before published photographs, documents and information concerning these fascinating radios, their collection, preservation and restoration.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST for the Trans-Oceanic collector!.......2007-08-14
If you're a Trans-Oceanic aficionado like myself, you need this book! These sets command a mystique like no other and this book is an excellent tribute to these outstanding receivers.
Tough to put down.......2007-01-03
As a collector of Trans-Oceanics, I found this to be the best book I have read in awhile. Couldn't put it down.
The book covers several areas: the history of the Trans-Oceanics, details of the various models, restoration and repair information, and accessories.
The history information is well worth reading, and told me a lot I didn't know about the radios.
The repair/restoration sections are excellent, whether you are experienced with electronics or not.
I would say this book is a must-have for anyone with an interest in Trans-Oceanics
Invaluable, Entertaining, Scholarly.......2000-10-07
This is easily the best written book for collectors that I've read. Not only are its 160 magazine-sized pages thorough and exhaustive in their presentation of history, key personalities, and technical data, but the book is thoughtfully structured to be as useful as a reference as it is an entertaining read. A wealth of pictures, many in color, come from ads, from Zenith archives, and from individual collections.
The book places the genesis and subsequent evolution of the TO clearly in historical context and explains the impact of the TO on the commercial development and acceptance of the portable radio. The authors provide practical advice for collectors, even citing restoration techniques and specific restoration products used by museums.
Especially gratifying is the use of endnotes that provide sources of historical information. More than just references, the endnotes contain enough interesting anecdotal data that you'll find yourself reading them in their entirety when you finish the main text.
If you are interested in the history of radio for any reason, you won't go wrong with this fascinating, authoritative work. I expect that it has already significantly increased interest in the collecting of Trans-Oceanics.
A must have authority for all Zenith Trans-Oceanic owners........1997-11-09
I recently acquired a 1956-57 model Y600 at a flea market. The Zenith Trans-Oceanic is clearly in a class by itself and I wanted to learn as much about the history of this model as possible. What a pleasant surprise when I received "The Zenith Trans-Oceanic, The Royalty of Radios" and found it to be extremely well documented, highly entertaining and it even includes a restoration guideline section. The print quality is first class with all the historical photographs of related personages and reproduction of Trans-Oceanic advertisements that a reader could want. The writing style is both scholarly and entertaining. In short this book has provided significant additional pleasure in owning, restoring and listening to a radio worthly of being known as a historical benchmark in radio history. Thanks to Amazon Books the finding and acquiring this book was made easy!
An excellent source-book for Trans-Oceanic Collectors........1997-01-12
Whenever radio-guys assemble to swap tales of great radios
one name stands above the rest - the Zenith Trans-Oceanic.
Considered the radio for listening to the world, Trans-Oceanic
portables were one of the finest engineered and designed
products made in America. I learned of the magic of the
Trans-Oceanic from my foster Dad, who carried one
(the R520\URR military version) in Korea. He told me it was
the most reliable radio he had ever seen.
A few years later I bought a 600 series and discovered for
myself the joys of short-wave listening. I carried that Zenith
from the States to Europe where, two years later, I bought a
Royal 3000-1 which went back to the States and then on to
Southeast Asia.
The Zenith Trans-Oceanic - The Royalty of Radios, is one of
the finest collector books I have ever seen. The author's spent
more than two years researching the Zenith archives to bring
this book to life. Page after page of beautifully produced color,
combined with black and white photographs show each model
inside and out, along with original magazine ads presented in
their original format.
Information covering the origin of the Trans-Oceanic and model
changes through the years make for interesting reading. Also
included are repair hints, as well as collecting information.
The section on original cost compared to 1996 dollars
demonstrates how expensive these sets were when new. The
original Trans-Oceanic sold for $75 in 1942, which translates
to $695 today. The most astounding price was on the first
transistorized model, the 1000-D, introduced in 1958 at a
1996 price of over $1400!
This is a book for anyone interested in the history of one of the
finest products ever produced in the United States - the
Zenith Trans-Oceanic radio. The authors, publisher and
printer deserve a thank you for producing this fine volume.

Book Description
Josef Hoffmann: Furniture, Designs and Objects provides a comprehensive look at the designs for furniture, decorative objects, and printed material that cult designer Josef Hoffmann (Austrian, 1870-1956) created for the interiors of his visionary buildings. The book shows how Hoffmann produced a sense of aesthetic unity in his built environments by balancing bold formal innovation with simple yet elegant geometric and organic motifs.
Hoffmann was among the first architect-designers to apply the concept of Gesamtkuntswerk, (the effort to produce a "total work of art") to his field. Along with the painter Gustav Klimta major collaborator and influenceHoffmann was a founding member of the Viennese Secession. He went on to establish the Wiener Werkstätte with Koloman Moser in 1903, a commercial design workshop that successfully blurred the distinctions between fine and decorative art.

Book Description
This splendid and generously illustrated monograph by Horst Uhr is the first comprehensive study of one of the great individualists in the history of art. Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) has long been recognized as a major figure in German painting, along with Emile Nolde and Max Beckmann. Spanning a tremendously fertile period in European painting, his astonishingly productive career touched on major currents of art in his time, from the nineteenth-century academic tradition to Naturalism, Impressionism, and Expressionism. Corinth was accomplished in several media, including painting, drawing, and watercolor. After his death in 1925 virtually every major German city held its own memorial exhibition.
Professor Uhr draws on the artist's own diaries and letters, observations by his family, and writings by contemporaries to construct a detailed narrative which places Corinth's deeply autobiographical and personal work in the context of turn-of-the-century art politics in Munich and Berlin. Corinth is seen in relation both to contemporary cultural figures, such as artists, critics, and dealers, and to the theater, the Jugendstil movement, the Berlin Secession, and the Nietzsche cult in Germany. Corinth's themes in combination with powerful use of color and bold application of paint distinguish him as a modern master.

Stunning Oversize Book of Corinth's Paintings.......2002-07-31
What a book! I bought it... sort of sight unseen. (They don't have a graphic of the cover online...) I was having trouble finding any books on him in my local stores. What a painter! And this book really does an excellent job of recording his life's work. He was talented and very dedicated - continuing to paint even after having a stroke. I highly recommend this book to other painters interested in figurative painting (this seemed to be his specialty, though he has landscapes too.)

Right or Wrong, God Judge Me: THE WRITINGS OF JOHN WILKES BOOTH
ASIN: 0809317664 |
Book Description
In this, the first thoroughly researched scholarly biography of Junius Brutus Booth, Stephen M. Archer reveals Booth to have been an actor of considerable range and a man of sensitivity and intellect. Archer provides a clear account of the actor’s professional and personal life and places him in relationship to his contemporaries, particularly Edmund Kean and William Charles Macready.
Indeed, he begins the book on February 20, 1817, as Booth first confronts Kean on the Drury Lane stage. Archer then provides a chronological account of Booth’s life, summarizing and assessing his career by drawing upon the opinions of his fellow actors as well as of the critics and scholars of the day. From 1817 to 1852 Booth toured throughout North America, enjoying a reputation as the most distinguished Shakespearean tragedian on the American continent. Still, he yearned for success on the British stage, a goal he never attained. His public image as a drunken, dangerous lunatic obscured a private life filled with the richness of a close and loyal family and an appreciation for living.
The worldwide fame assured for the Booth family by John Wilkes Booth’s bone-shattering leap from the President’s box had eluded Junius Brutus Booth throughout his lifelong exile in America. But from that event until today, no American family of actors—not the Barrymores, the Drews, the Jeffersons, not even the Fondas—has stimulated such scrutiny as the Booths.
After Junius Brutus Booth’s death, the actor’s wife, in an attempt to preserve family dignity and privacy, burned the bulk of his letters and papers. In spite of this, Archer has done a remarkable job of reconstructing Booth’s life and career. Eight years of research, pursuing Booth from Amsterdam to San Francisco, has resulted in an accurate, fascinating narrative that both records and illuminates the actor’s life with objectivity and perception. Archer follows Junius Brutus Booth in unprecedented detail as the actor deserts his wife and child to come to America with a pregnant Covent Garden flower girl. His American adventure lasted thirty-five years and ended with his death on a steamboat on the Mississippi River after having played his final engagement in New Orleans.
Archer concludes by tracing the lives and fortunes of Booth’s immediate family. He also provides a complete performance record, including every known performance of Booth’s, indicating date, place, theatre, whether or not it was a benefit, and the terms under which the actor appeared.
This riveting and absorbing work will interest scholars of American theatrical history, the history of Shakespeare on stage, and American cultural history.

Welcome addition to the Booth literature.......2005-01-24
Junius Brutus Booth is largely forgotten today, even by theatre professionals. Of those who do recognize his name, most would identify him as the father of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth and Shakespearean actor, Edwin Booth. However, Junius Brutus Booth was probably the first great American actor, even though he never became an American citizen. Born the son of a London silversmith, he became stage struck as a teenager and by his early twenties was playing major roles in Shakespeare. But in London, Booth was considered a mere imitator of Edmund Keane. Seeking to increase his reputation and make money, Booth, at age twenty-five, sailed for America in June of 1821. He had also just committed bigamy and took with him his second wife, abandoning his Belgian wife and their son. (There would be later repercussions from this action.) Booth proved a success in America, earning far more there than he ever commanded in Britain. He bought a farm in Maryland and sired nine more children as he toured the then young nation, thrilling audiences from New Orleans to Nova Scotia, and later San Francisco. Booth however was either mentally unstable or an incorrigible alcoholic (perhaps both), leaving a record of eccentric and erratic behavior everywhere he played. He gave some great performances and some puzzlingly bizarre ones.
Years ago I read Eleanor Ruggles' biography of Edwin Booth, PRINCE OF PLAYERS. In that book Junius Brutus Booth comes across as a roaring larger-than-life figure. Archer presents the elder Booth on a more human scale, showing his pain and disappointments, as well as his triumphs. He also offers a critical assessment of Booth's work, based on contemporary accounts and manages to provide some insight into Booth's stardom. I found this observation very interesting: "Kirk [a critic of the time] shrewdly noted that the intention to produce the effect is often visible; he then added, `In Booth's method the intention was precisely what was not visible.' Modern actors talk about playing the action as opposed to a result; Booth would have recognized the distinction."
It is hoped that Archer will next turn his attention to a new biography of Edwin Booth since PRINCE OF PLAYERS is now more than fifty years old. JUNIUS BRUTUS BOOTH: THEATRICAL PROMETHEUS is an excellent and very welcome addition to the Booth literature. It is highly recommended to those with an interest in the history of acting and the early American theatre.
