Book Description
When Sister Maria Amata--the former Emily Barone--enters newly-established Mater Christi Monastery, she is eager to become a spouse of Christ--to give all she is and has to God. However, Sister Maria Amata finds that living in the monastery with the other nuns radically confronts her understanding of the life itself and her own motives. Why did she really enter the monastery? To give herself completely to God? Or is she instead running from facing her inability to forgive the man who murdered her brother?
The possibility of acquiring a long-desired bell for the monastery catapults Sister Maria Amata into a crisis. The novice mistress, Sister Maria Bernadette, challenges the young novice by appointing her as the bell ringer for the Angelus each day. She must choose to live in the ways of freedom and love if her gift to God at first profession is to be truly one of total surrender. She can no longer hold onto her anger and lack of forgiveness.
Can Sister Maria Amata overcome her fear of ringing the bell? More importantly, will she open her heart to God's grace and forgive?

An interesting book that will interest everyone, not just Catholics.......2007-04-22
Personally, I really liked the book. It led me to think more about my own struggles with forgiveness. And yes, the writing is very simple, short and concise - I consider it to be written in the style of a 'young adult' book, if anything. The storyline is great and leads you to learn more about contemplative cloistered Dominican life. However, I would have loved this book to be over 100 pages - more character depth, more about the life of Emily (Sr. Maria Amata) than we saw in the book.
A lovely little story!.......2006-11-10
This was quite an enjoyable read, and a welcome break from the typical heavy reading I do. I read it in two days, and that was while taking care of my 3 year old and infant! I also passed it along to two others who both enjoyed it as well. Definately worth purchasing. I look forward to the author's future works.
Interesting Theme--Very Poor Writing.......2006-04-05
I was interested in this book because the theme is fascinating. However, I couldn't read more than 10 pages (and even that was a struggle) because the writing is so poor. As a previous reviewer commented, the writing seems childish. If you like reading good literature, I don't recommend this book. A book to consider that deals with a similar them but is superbly written is Lying Awake.
Wonderful theme - dreadful writing.......2005-09-15
The struggle with forgiveness which Sr Amata encounters is a deep, moving idea. Yet the writing in this book is very poor. Both the conversations and the descriptive paragraphs reminded me of a children's book. I suppose the crude vernacular the nuns employ is supposed to be natural (Marigolds? Yuck, they stink!), but I found it very trying.
The author clearly tries to incorporate varied elements: showing how all nuns struggle with selfishness and weakness; caring for others in the community; the varied paths to the contemplative vocation. It does not work in a book this slender. One is left with a brief reference, but no depth.
It is unfortunate that a theme which could have been very powerful is clouded by the folksy language and lack of character development. About all one knows of the main character - let alone the other nuns - is why she fears ringing the bell. The instant healing as she finally does so does not ring true, either.
A Great Book - Recommend highly!.......2004-04-29
If you're like me and love a good novel, you find yourself reading to discover new worlds that you may not ever be able to physically visit. A good book enables us to enter a place, interact with the community of characters living there, and grow to love and care about the people in that place and what happens to them. On a higher level, a book occasionally comes along and challenges us to look at our own lives and at how we might become more: by giving more of ourselves, by loving our family or friends more, by deepening our spiritual lives and our connection to God, even by seeing the daily tasks we undertake with a more positive attitude - seeing them as faith and love offerings to God. Amata Means Beloved is one of these treasures: a book that will take you into its world, cause you to fall in love, and challenge you to make your world a better place. Please read this book and share it with the special people in your lives - you'll be happy you took the time!
Book Description
Harry Potter has put a spell on millions of readers, and they all want to find out more about the deeper meaning of his adventures. In Harry Potter and Philosophy, 17 experts in the field of philosophy unlock some of Hogwarts' secret panels, uncovering surprising insights that are enlightening both for wizards and for the most discerning muggles. Individual chapters look at such topics as life revealed in the Mirror of Erised; the ethics of magic; Moaning Myrtle, Nearly Headless Nick, and the relation of the mind to the brain; and the character of Hermione as a case of "sublimated feminism." Also examined in this witty collection are how Aristotle would have run a school for wizards; whether the Potter stories undermine religion and morality; how to tell good people from evil ones through the characters in these novels; and what dementors and boggarts can teach readers about happiness, fear, and the soul.

1 great essay, 1 good essay, and 14 essays to waste your time.......2007-09-02
After finishing book 7, but before rereading all of the HP books, I wanted to read something that was about the HP books, to see what other people had to say.
This book, consisting of 16 essays, is not about the Harry Potter books. Rather, it uses the characters and events in the Harry Potter books to illustrate the philosophical arguments that are studied at University level in Philosophy 101. For the most part, it won't add to you knowledge of Harry Potter, but it will make you glad you don't have to take Philosophy 101 again (or for the first time).
The essay "Magic, Science, and the Ethics of Technology" is an exception to the overall quality of the book. This is an outstanding essay, that focuses on magic in the HP books and its relationship to science and technology. The authors have thought out the issues very clearly, and this essay does shed significant light on the HP books. In brief, magic is seen as a proto-science, roughly comparable to the field of 'Natural Philosophy' as was studied in Europe just before the dawn of the scientific age. Magic has natural laws that are followed, and the students at Hogwarts have to learn these laws. It's not just waving a wand and having any desire 'magically' brought about. And they also have to learn the ethical principles involved in using magic. A brilliant, wonderful essay here.
The good essay is "Feminism and Equal Opportunity: Hermione and the Women of Hogwarts". In brief, this essay discusses how the Wizarding world is one in which there is pretty much full equality between the sexes, and everyone in the books just assumes it. As but one example, several of the players on the Irish Quidditch World Cup team are women, but this is only mentioned in passing, since it's no big deal that women are on the same world championship team with men.
The rest of the essays are a complete waste of time. They are nothing but empty philosophical concepts, basically empty words chasing other empty words in circles. (In the philosophical debate on whether ethics and metaphysics are worth studying or are the results of linguistic errors, I come down on the side of the Ordinary Language Philosophers like Wittgenstein.) As examples, taking several pages to discuss the real-world possibility of apparating as traveling through 'real' worm-holes, and discussing the paradoxes of time travel misses the point of Harry Potter.
If you want to know more about HP, read 'Unlocking Harry Potter' by John Granger.
Without the essay on Magic and Science, I would have given the book a 1. But I don't think one excellent essay out of 16 can raise the rating to a 3. So I'll leave it at 2.
A Good Excuse to Enjoy Harry Potter as an Adult.......2007-06-05
I very much enjoyed reading "Harry Potter and Philosophy: If Aristotle Ran Hogwarts". As one who reads the Potter books mostly for the escapism, it was interesting to have the help of professional philosophers help me delve into the deeper meanings contained in the books. This book also helped me to appreciate JKR's talent even more. I believe she must have more than a cursery knowledge of philosophy herself. My favorite essays were "Feminism and Equal Opportunity:Herminone and the Women of Hogwarts", "Heaven, Hell and Harry Potter" "Magic,Muggles and Moral Imagination" and "The Prophecy-Driven Life: Foreknowledge and Freedom at Hogwarts" All of the essays had at least one "ah HA" moment where the brain went into high gear and really started purring. The essay "Space, Time and Magic" caused the usual brain cramp that all time travel conundrums do and I enjoyed it as much as I always enjoy such discussions with the addition that new concepts were introduced of which I had previously been unaware. I was not aquainted with the terms "tensed" and "tenseless" time. This book is probably not for the expert philosopher as these concepts will be basics but for someone of my experience (almost none) studying philosophy,it was a great read. Just like a good movie, don't leave before the credits are done; the bios at the end are amusing.
Common Sense Revealed.......2007-01-18
To begin with, the subtitle should read:
If Aristotle Ran Hogwarts he wouldn't change a thing.
These Philosophers praise J.K. Rowlings for her character development of both the good and bad people in the books. They recognise, describe and praise her treatment of them and find her ideas mirrored in other philosphers. It's a fun read most of the time but to me the praise of that most uncommon of all qualities 'Common Sense' found in Rowlings was a pleasure.
Interesting perspective.......2006-08-19
I read this book not expecting any great new philosophies or insights into old ones. I was pleasantly surprised. As a person that has read many of the older philosophical texts, I know how hard it is to sometimes understand the reasonings and logic presented. I think this book presents its ideas in a very clear way that even the youngest audiences of Harry Potter would be able to have a good introduction to philosophical thought.
Entertaining enlightenment.......2006-01-12
As a Harry Potter fan, I pick up almost anything with Harry in the title. Often, I put it back down after a cursory glance. Not this time!
This book is a collection of essays on philosophical questions raised in the Harry Potter series. It would be a good adjunct for anyone taking a college level philosophy course, to see a practical application of using philosophy to aid in understanding literature - or the use of literature to understand philosophy!

Plastic Man: The Greatest Super-Hero of All-Time!.......2007-07-18
These archives from DC are fantastic, I have the originals of the first two issues of Police Comics reprinted in this volume. Jack Cole who created Plastic Man was a brilliant artist and humorist. Lets just face it, Plastic man by all accounts has to be the greatest superhero of all-time. He is virtually indestructable, can shape himself into anything he wants, and has the keenest sense of humor too. Not to mention the groovy dark goggles. Even Batman has said as much. In theses volumes from DC, you'll find out the same thing. Great Read! The Plastic Man Archives, Vol. 5 (DC Archive Editions)

Explains serious mental illness from a Biblical perspective. The primary focus is schizophrenia, however, this book may also serve as a guide for Christian counselors working with persons with related problems. Addresses suffering, depression, 'demon possession' vs. mental illness, guilt/shame, anger, loneliness, and fear, all from a Scriptural reference. Used by 'Focus on the Family' as a resource for mental illness queries.

Biblical Answers for the Families of the Mentally Ill.......2007-07-03
Dr. Steven Waterhouse wrote "Strength for His People" is an effort to minister to families of the mentally ill. The book addresses the failure of the church to respond to mental illness, and to provide help for the families touched by these illnesses. Dr. Waterhouse has done meticulous research and provided detailed documentation. This research provides evidence that schizophrenia is primarily a medical not a moral problem.
Family members are offered help in dealing with the emotions of guilt, anger, isolation, denial, and conflict. Dr. Waterhouse also presents a theological study addressing the question of, "Why does God allow suffering?"
Personal illustrations, used by Dr. Waterhouse, include incidents from the life of his brother Mark, who suffers from schizophrenia. These stories gave me a sense of his genuine empathy and concern for suffering families and his motivation for writing this book.
The text is Biblically based with Scriptural references provided to assist the reader in their understanding of the material. Each chapter includes important questions for thought and further consideration. An extensive Bibliography and valuable resource list are included. These tools make this an excellent reference for professional and lay counselors, pastors, and concerned family members of those suffering from mental illness.
Viewing the issue in its entirety.......2004-05-10
This is the best book so far that I have read that gives a comprehensive view of emotional responses dealing with the issue of mental illness. The author relates the material to the point of view of a friend, family member, church member with special attention given to the leaders of the church and their response toward people struggling with the daily demands of mental illness and the stygma it creates. The author has first hand knowledge of schizophrenia being that his brother is dealing with this devastating illness so he is very credible and compassionate. A great read for opening your mind to the possibilities of making a life better for those who suffer.

A dazzling collection of knitted accessories for children and the home, ranging from hats and mittens to rugs and throws.
Customer Reviews:
Bust that Yarn Stash, and don't worry about the fit.......2001-02-19
Knitting need not be sweaters, socks or scarves. How about knitting something for the home or a toy for your child? This book has an amazing assortment of non-garment designs like pillows, lampshades and toys.
It also has accessories (bags, hats, socks, mittens) for kids. GREAT for gifts. Who doesn't need a cute bag or another pair of mittens?
Knitting for the home and knitting accessories is a lot of fun and brings out the creativity. You can use up mixes of yarns you bought for the exciting colors or textures, but that you had no idea how to use. If you combine these patterns with embellishments, you can reuse these patterns and make new creations with added fringe, cord, applique or embroidery (check out Knitted Embellishements by Nicki Epstein--you can do celtic knotwork with i-cord)
If you like this kind of knitting, you might also Shangold's Design Source book of Home Decor, Nicki Epstein's Knitting for your Home, or Erika Knight's Comforts of Home.

A Good Book, but it needs a bit editing.......2004-12-28
It's a really Good Book, very thorough. But it lacks editing for the new revisions. There are quite a few chapters that concerns DOS only, and these days it would be hard to find a person that finds this interesting.
Those chapters could very well be exchanged for information on XP, Win 2003 or even Linux. And now I mentioned Linux: this OS is completely ignored in the text. When the author lists the 32 bit operating systems, he event counts Win95 and Win98, but excludes Linux and Unix!?
So: A very nice read that could have been better.
Out of date.......2004-03-08
Has a lot of good background, but if you are looking for in-depth information about the Pentium family, you should likely skip this book. The "Pentium and Pentium Pro" chapter starts page 753, "Pentium II, III and 4" starts page 783, and "Appendixes" star page 802, meaning 30 pages and 19 pages respectively on the last two Intel processor families.
Several references in the book state things like "just introduced" or "this year", but were obviously from early editions.
I recognize how hard it is to keep up to date - The current (as of this writing) architecture documents from Intel on IA-32e and AMD for AMD64 are several thousands of pages and free for download. Of course, I never expected 64 bit architecture discussion in this book, but but I was looking for a narrative that would set the base and context of modern 32 bit implementations.
Very detail oriented, complete and good reference.......2002-08-24
I have read the first 140 pages of this book, and I really like it. So far, I have the following comments.
Good points:
1.) It covers both real and protected mode from the start. Other books wait until the middle of the books before they cover protected mode.
2.) Assembly language command mechanism are explained in great detail. The author explain exactly what's going on. How the data moved from memory to register, register to register, how the memory in a computer is organized, how exactly PUSH and POP command works etc. There are lots of diagram that illustrate his explanations.
3.) It covers from 8086 to Pentium II hardware architecture. Many books are strictly limited to outdated 8086 and 8088 processors.
4.) The exercises at the end of each chapter increases my understanding of the subject and answers to even numbered problems are available at the end of the book.
Bad Points:
1.)Assembly language and processor architecture are hard subjects. You have to read each chapter several times before you can get a good grasp of the topic.
2.)Some of the topic presented by the authors can not be easily understood until you read the subsequent chapters.
One suggestion for people who read the book: Make sure you know how to convert binary, hexadecimal and decimal number. You have to know these otherwise you can get lost. Some basic understanding of logic gates is also helpfull!
Unhelpful and Scattered.......2001-10-23
I'm currently studying Electronic Engineering, and this is our recommended text for the introduction to assembly module. I find i can't use the book as it does not lay out any subject clearly. Often parts of the language are used in examples then introduced and explained many pages later. If starting you have to get at least one other book.
This Book is a must for Hardware Freaks.......2001-06-11
My teacher used this book in our Electronics Engineering course few year back, it was some old edition. Since then I wanted to buy this book, but I couldn't find it in decent price. Few days back I bought it for US ... (lucky me). This book is really great for Assembly Programmers, Hardware Interfacing (with PCI, Local bus, AGP, LPT and USB), etc. It is also great for leaning Interfacing with other devices too, since it clearly describes some interfacing ICs. It is not suited for beginners.

I found the words to be spelled correctly and the pictures to be pretty. I would highly recomend this book to anyone seeking these qualities from a book.
I was better than CATS.......2000-06-28
This book is great, full of great vision. I especially liked the yellow business cards from Art Director "Tedd Asbill". It was better than CATS! I would read it again and again.
Great Book.......2000-06-13
I love this book. The art is presented in a beutiful fashion. Clean, crisp printing on wonderful paper. I only wish that they included statements from each designer. But over all a great book.

Book Description
This is a study of Saint Saens's concertante works - five concertos for piano, three for violin, two for cello, and shorter works.
Customer Reviews:
A valuable book.......2000-04-12
This is one of very few books recognising the special features of French music of the Romantic Era, and in particular the important contribution of music written by Camille Saint-Saens. Following the introduction, the first chapter offers a 32-page insight into the composer's character and life. This, alone, is a rare encounter and comes eight years before the detailed biographies by Rees and Studd. The following ten chapters are split into two sections dealing with the "Concertante" works by Saint-Saens and the French Solo Concerto around the same time. Both sections are logically structured and equipped with references, comparisons and examples, while works by Lalo, Dubois, Faure, Franck, Chausson and Debussy, to mention but a few, are additionally addressed. The interested reader can gain even more knowledge by consulting the appendices complementing the main chapters. In summary, for anyone keen to explore French romantic music this is a valuable book, which has been extensively researched and clearly written.
