Book Description

"Rich in character and incident, An Ice-Cream War fulfills the ambition of the historical novel at its best."
--The New York Times Book Review

Booker Prize Finalist

"Boyd has more than fulfilled the bright promise of [his] first novel. . . . He is capable not only of some very funny satire but also of seriousness and compassion."  --Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

1914. In a hotel room in German East Africa, American farmer Walter Smith dreams of Theodore Roosevelt. As he sleeps, a railway passenger swats at flies, regretting her decision to return to the Dark Continent--and to her husband. On a faraway English riverbank, a jealous Felix Cobb watches his brother swim, and curses his sister-in-law-to-be. And in the background of the
world's daily chatter: rumors of an Anglo-German conflict, the likes of which no one has ever seen.

In An Ice-Cream War, William Boyd brilliantly evokes the private dramas of a generation upswept by the winds of war. After his German neighbor burns his crops--with an apology and a smile--Walter Smith takes up arms on behalf of Great Britain. And when Felix's brother marches off to defend British East Africa, he pursues, against his better judgment, a forbidden love affair. As the sons of the world match wits and weapons on a continent thousands of miles from home, desperation makes bedfellows of enemies and traitors of friends and family. By turns comic and quietly wise, An Ice-Cream War deftly renders lives capsized by violence, chance, and the irrepressible human capacity for love.

"Funny, assured, and cleanly, expansively told, a seriocomic romp. Boyd gives us studies of people caught in the side pockets of calamity and dramatizes their plights with humor, detail and grit."  --Harper's

"Boyd has crafted a quiet, seamless prose in which story and characters flow effortlessly out of a fertile imagination. . . . The reader emerges deeply moved." --Newsday

5 out of 5 stars One GREAT novel that will deeply move all who read it........2007-08-02

An Ice Cream War, by William Boyd, is a wonderfully crafted novel. Boyd really soars as a writer, not only in his stylish and artful prose, but also in a story line that would, with many authors, be too much to write on without the inevitable choppiness that plot can create. Boyd is an author many, I here-to-for included, don't know. That should change for justice to be done for this gifted writer. An Ice Cream War, originally published some twenty four years ago, is a must read for both those who love rather old fashioned novels, with real and raw human emotion, and those who simply derive pleasure from the beauty of the written word. Boyd is going right up there with Norris, Stegner, Oates and Wharton (among others) that I think are absolute must reads. Treat yourself to some real art - read this novel.

5 out of 5 stars a fun read.......2005-06-12

A wonderful work on the absurdities of war at home and abroad.

A classic piece of historical fiction.

3 out of 5 stars OK, not great.......2002-10-03

I saw "Armadillo" on A&E and was fascinated throughout. When I went to the library, "Armadillo" was not available, so I got another book by William Boyd, "An Ice-Cream War." This book was a disappointment to me. I think the writing was superficial, it didn't seem to have a plot and I never could get into the story. People asked me what it was about, and I had a hard time telling them. I'm glad others were involved, captivated, engaged etc. but I was not.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not wonderful........2002-06-19

I think it is a nice and readable book but not really a masterpiece

4 out of 5 stars educational history lesson plus enjoyable fiction..........2001-09-01

An Ice-Cream War is a historical novel concerning the war front in the African colonies of Germany and Britain during WW I. As with most folks I suppose, I know relatively little of WW I ... and nothing of the battles fought in these colonies. William Boyd educates the reader of this forgotten slice of history very nicely by enveloping it in a very realistic story concerning reluctant soldiers, both German and British, and their families. The author strikes a successful balance of wry humour and pathos, with the end result being that indeed war, or at least this war, is horribly tragic and senseless.

This is the second William Boyd novel I've read, the first being Brazzaville Beach. Although both novels involve Africa, they are quite different (Brazzaville Beach is a story about modern sub-Sahara Africa). Sadly for me, I had lofty expectations of An Ice-Cream War since I thought Brazzaville Beach was one of the best novels I've ever read. So I was in a sense disappointed with An Ice-Cream War even though it is a perfectly competent and interesting story.

Bottom line: historical fiction on par with the best works from Michener and Uris. However it doesn't quite reach the levels of literary excellence of Boyd's Brazzaville Beach.

Book Description

They are known as the Little People, the Beautiful Maidens, the Godmothers, the Blessed, the Ageless Ones...for it is dangerous to say the name "faeries" without good reason. Ruling over earth, air, fire, and water, they protect forests, animals, and children, and in their hands lie the dreamy souls of all creatures.

The faeries rose from the mist long, long ago, in the time of the Golden Age -- well before the creation of gods and men. In their magical fancy they created the singing grasses and the reflection of springs, the music of legends and the far side of the mirror. From the Valkyries of Valhalla to the Babouchka of Russia, Banshees, Dryads, Bogey Beasts, Sirens, and their ilk populate the imaginations and the forests of every culture.

In this comprehensive celebration of the world of faery, renowned French elficologist Pierre Dubois describes the extraordinary richness of the faery kingdom, presenting dozens and dozens of lushly illustrated entries on the most powerful and enchanting denizens of this magical world. Dubois provides readers with authoritative information detailing the customs, habitat, and activities of these Little People. Faery Godmothers, we discover, were originally tall, distinguished, and rather severe; only recently have they taken up the magic wands and cheerful smiles we know them for today. We learn that the favorite foods of the Arthurian faery Viviane are the blackberries that surround Merlin's tomb. And among the customs and activities of the Bogey Beast, the prime goal is indeed to scare little children...if only for their protection.

Dubois's entrancing descriptions are accompanied by Roland and Claudine Sabatier's marvelous illustrations, which depict the appearance of the faeries, the places where they are found, and their familiar objects. Without revealing any faery confidences (which must never be betrayed), Dubois and the Sabatiers have created a comprehensive and utterly enchanting survey of a magical world as old as time.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and unique!!.......2007-08-10

If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to the fairy world, you will be hard-pressed to find a better book than this. An encyclopedia is exactly what this book is- an artistic encyclopedia. It provides a thorough description of each mythical being, including its history, characteristics, magical powers, habitat, and even dietary preferences. And all the descriptions are surrounded by beautiful illustrations.

If you are looking for a fairy art book, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. The illustrations are wonderful, but they are not the primary focus of the book- the information is.

1 out of 5 stars Fairies... not what I had in mind.........2007-06-08

This book isn't at all what I had hoped it would be. The stories and descriptions are ok.. they seemed to concentrate more on norse myths... but the illustrations were so disappointing. I am a big Brian Froud fan... and after seeing his magnifican drawings, well.. these just don't even compare. So if you like diversity, this might be ok for you. But if you like the beautiful artwork... I'd pass on this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia Of Faeries.......2007-04-16

My review of this book is that it is just enchanting to me and maybe to other people also it is amazing with all the stories in it. Also this book has facts on creatures that maybe is really around you and others like the light faeries , the dark faeries , and the elemental faeries. Last but not least just as the book page that says about the author in the book that Pierre Dubois is a wonderful author.

5 out of 5 stars Master Elficologist!.......2007-02-04

I am sure that Mr. DuBois is the real thing, an elficologist of the highest sort...artist, philosopher, seer-- a true poet. He has ventured in secret, sacred places and written beautifully about them. He is a child at heart, and a wise one at that. This is the best of all the faery books!

4 out of 5 stars Incredible amount of information.......2006-04-25

Pierre Dubois covers a vast array of different types of faeries. This is more for the serious study of faeries and less on their cute aspects. Contains lots of information from folklore and mythology.

The theme of Supermen: Tales of the Posthuman Future is the belief that humanity will be able to colonize other planets only by radically altering itself through genetic engineering and/or cybernetics. Editor Gardner Dozois, 12-time winner of science fiction's Hugo Award for Best Editor, has assembled 26 superb speculations by many of SF's best writers, from veteran visionaries like Greg Egan and Bruce Sterling to cutting-edge newcomers like David Marusek and Charles Stross. These stories first appeared between 1953 and 2000 (a majority between 1991-2000). They are pure, often hard SF, with powerful, sometimes frightening, always believable characters. Supermen is recommended to SF readers who won't mind that women make up only two of the contributors and barely more of the protagonists. Mr. Dozois has also edited a companion volume about remaking worlds, Worldmakers: SF Adventures in Terraforming. --Cynthia Ward

    5 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-01

This is Supermen in the SF sense. Although in tales like Brother Perfect, there are, indeed, your standard superhumans. Then you have stories like Mortimer Gray's History of Death, a look at immortality and death, which definitely does not fall into the prior category, so a variety. These two stories form part of longer works, or when edited became parts of books. There is certainly a broad range here, from some talented authors.

    2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-10-15

From the title of the collection, you might expect that it is an intelligent look at people with superpowers, right? Or perhaps, they are exceptional in some interesting way that fits in with the "superman" or Nietzsche?

Nope. They are stories about beings who have been altered past normal humanity. This could be interesting, although it would have been nice to have had a clearer description indicating that this is the theme of the stories. However, the stories themselves are not real winners.

It's not a bad book, but it is far from the Dozois' best work as an anthologist.

3 out of 5 stars Good book for entertainment........2005-08-17

I would buy this as a gift for a SF fan. Some interesting stories, but nothing phenomenal. I'd get it from a public source to read again, as I donate all my read books.

    4 out of 5 stars A Solid Collction.......2003-11-28

I found most of the selections in this anthology to be quite entertaining. Some of them were a bit rough, but none were what I would call poor quality. There is variation from hard SF to far future "high tech as magic" within the collection. I recommend this collection as a good introduction to the post-human genre.

    2 out of 5 stars Not the best sci-fi I've read.......2003-03-17

I used this book primarily as an introduction to science fiction, and found it quite discouraging. After reading other science fiction stories, I found that the selections in this book were not the best available options. Many of the pieces were frustratingly confusing. If beginning in Sci-Fi, I recommend you look elsewhere, and return to this once you have mastered the genre. For experts of sci-fi, this might be better.

    1 out of 5 stars Poorly Done.......2006-07-12

When I picked up this book, I expected that the author had done research and even interviewed celebrities to get their opinions on faith, etc. However, most of what I found was clippings and soundbites that were often taken out of context and used to prove whatever "point" the author was trying to make. This not only casts a needlessly bad light on many of the celebrities, but it also exposes the lack of effort and research that went into the writing of this book. It seemed to me like the author was more interested in publicizing his critique of celebrity quotes than of actually delving into dialogue with celebrities and their beliefs. Thumbs down on this one.

2 out of 5 stars Should have been titled "What Ray Comfort Believes".......2005-12-09

First of all, let me say that I was entertained by reading about what the famous actors/actresses believe. It actually helped me to discover Scientology, and while I don't believe in it, this book helped me to expand my latitudes. It is also fairly brief and easy reading, and I found it fun to learn some of these people's real names.

That's about where the second star ends. One can easily conclude from reading this book that Ray Comfort is an apologist, and a bad one at that. Sometimes he simply presents an actor/acress' beliefs, but when he finds it convient to push his agenda, he'll go off on a tangent about what someone believes. His conclusion is borderline offensive--he presents a list of those actors/actresses who have passed away simply to make his point that life is temporal and that you NEED to consider Christ. Furthermore, he lists "Jesus of Nazereth" as his last entry, as if Jesus was some great Hollywood actor needing our attention.

If you're interested in learning about the spirituality of Hollywood, by all means, consider this book. But please don't give it to people you care about in hopes of converting them...that's just plain wrong, and if you really cared about them, you wouldn't subject them to this kind of guilt trip, or drivel.

3 out of 5 stars The Godly and The Ungodly..........2005-06-14

This book states that Hollywood started as a "Christian" settlement in the early 1900s. It has fallen in stature and has a reputation of Sodom and Gammorah instead of a Godly place. No true religious nature has been reflected in television shows or movies. Wonder why. One quote I found may state it all: "In Hollywood, self is on the throne. The culture of Hollywood encourages it." Being a Christian isn't 'hip' in Hollywood.

As I looked at each entry, I was amazed that most of the stars use their own names. It wasn't like that in the past. Two in particular who didn't were Charlton Heston (birth name: John Charles Carter) and Kirk Douglas (Issur Danielovitch Demsky). Most of these he chose were not my favorite stars, so I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to those not familiar; when he quoted George Clooney, I could identify (though I am closer to Nick's age), then I saw that Mr. Comfort had included a good sermon on George's comment.

He used quotes for Walt Disney who died in 1966; Charlie Chaplin (1977), John Wayne (1979) and Orson Welles (1985). These amazed me even more than the false names. He quotes Eddie Fisher's daughter Carrie saying her dad is happy because of his faith -- he is Jewish. I hope he is happy now.

George Nader, one of my favorite actors, always the gentleman, is dead, but I know he was a good Christian. I think, too, that Bing Crosby believed in God. How could he not after portraying a priest in all those movies?

He named presidents who had a deep faith in God, but he omitted Lincoln, the most ethical we've ever had. The only one connected in any way was Reagan. He should have quoted Nancy.

At the end, he interviewed Jesus of Nazareth. Now, that is a feat unworldly. He had the most to say, as he is the son of God! But I've always had a problem with a 'virgin birth.' There can be no such thing. And I do believe in God, but he is a personal God. I don't ask for material things like some devoted Christians I knew in 1980 (and behold! they were given what they asked for, with one exception). I thank God for the people I love, and I pray for them to be safe and happy.

Some churches are an abomination and treat their members cruelly. I won't name names, but they know who they are. I was christened a Methodist as a baby, grew up Baptist, and returned to the Methodist as they are not emotional and use ritual. I don't believe in emotion in religion. I've always loved and admired the Jewish people.

Ray Comfort has written many other religious books, and some not so religious. He is the co-host of a t.v. show out in L.A.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Entertaining & Easy Read! A Must For Movie Lovers.......2004-11-01

Recently I purchased two copies of this book. One for myself and one as a birthday present for a movie lover with a massive DVD collection. I thought it would be the perfect gift, focusing on her favorite entertainment, celebrities. I picked a winner. She absolutely loved it and is normally not much of a "book person" nor typically interested in things of a religious nature. This struck her fancy, big time. I then began reading my own copy and found it much more entertaining than I expected, being that I am not half the movie lover she is. Right off I was intrigued by some of the names I was finding in the table of contents. Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Stephen King, Alice Cooper, Tom Cruise, Charlie Chaplin and Christopher Reeve were just a few names that caught my eye. It would be interesting to have a look inside their heads to see what makes them tick. I wondered though, if it would read like a tabloid. Quickly I found that not to be the case, as the author seems to have done his homework, in many cases using quotes from the celeb's themselves, on just what it is they believe and how they came to that conclusion. Regardless of who you are a fan of, you will raise an eyebrow or two at some of these candid quotes on the often unheard of beliefs in Hollywood. This will definitely be making it into the hands of a few more friends of mine for Christmas. I would highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in celebrities, although that is by no means a prerequisite for enjoying this book. I think just about anyone would find it intriguing and it's a great gift for an office grab-bag too! Keep a copy on the coffee table when you have guests. They'll love it!

4 out of 5 stars Not As Detailed As I Thought It Would Be.......2004-09-07

Being a born again Christian, I really looked forward to reading this book. Unfortunately, this book was not what I thought it would be. Mr. Comfort does do a wonderful job with his commentaries, including them with quotes from the bible and presenting them with in a way that does challenge the reader to examine his/her own beliefs. He does a most excellent job at explaining man's sin and our need for a Savior.

The problem is, that among the many quotes from the celebrities, many of them are nothing more than one or two-sentence comments, and in reality says nothing about the person's true beliefs (like Lily Tomlin, for example.) Another disturbing thing I found is the quote he included from Della Reese, which, by reading it, the reader would think that she is a bible-believing Christian. However, upon further research on my own, I found that Ms. Reese's beliefs are more New Age and unbiblical, rather than true biblical Christianity. And the bad part about this is that Mr. Comfort did claim that this book was well researched, but I get the feeling that it really wasn't.

It makes for an interesting read, but don't expect to walk away with too much new information on what the celebrities believe.

Great book . very informative.. Good section on repair and identifiying.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-06-01

Along with a brief history of American lanterns, Mr. Hobson offers information on the anatomy of lanterns including how they work, identification of parts, materials, finishes and markings. Seventeen different US manufactures and their lanterns are identified and illustrated with detailed specifications. Excellent advice for collectors in locating, identifying and pricing, as well as, repair, restoration and care of lanterns. From a well respected member of lamp and lantern researchers.

4 out of 5 stars Solid basic reference and tutorial on the subject........1999-06-02

This was the first book I bought on this subject, and I found it invaluable as an introduction to early lantern manufacturers and lighting technology. The author clearly explains the different fuels available at different historical periods, and the technologies that utilized them. Contains many very clear reproductions from early catalogs organized by manufacturers in an easy to read reference format. Using the entries here, it is easy to locate the manufacturer, model, relative date of manufacture, and background on most commonly-encountered lanterns. The rarity guide is somewhat lacking in timeliness and should be updated, however. Despite that, I also recommend this author's Book Two as a useful addition and supplement to this book. Advanced collectors would likely be disappointed, but novices and experienced collectors will find this book interesting and informative.

        Book Description

[This] beautiful book turns craft into wearable art. Using black-and-white diagrams to clarify procedures, [Benson] introduces two types of beadwork: needle weaving, in which beads are threaded together; and card stitching, in which beads are sewn directly onto a backing of lightweight cardboard or construction paper....More than 40 gorgeous projects. A splendid book.”—Booklist.

        "A visual feast."—Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot.

Ann Benson, one of America’s foremost bead artisans, offers an array of eye-catching projects for beaded jewelry and accessories, all created from the surprisingly simple technique of beadweaving and showcased in gorgeous full-page photographs. The patterns and instructions for 50 of her most spectacular pieces use two basic methods: needleweaving, a style similar to crocheting, and bead card stitching, in which beads are sewn directly onto a patterned card. Ranging in style from Southwestern to Far Eastern, and Art Deco to Victorian, the projects include shimmering topaz earrings, a richly patterned Oriental carpet purse, a delicate ribbon pin, an exquisite purple floral belt, and much more. Every project highlights the beads’ exciting colors, shapes, sizes, and textures.

Good amount of information, and one would think from the title that this is a comprehensive guide to buying a home in Florida. BUT...the book was written for UK buyers, and a lot of the book is taken up with information about obtaining residency and the like. For people inside the US, there are high points worth reading, but mostly not. Probably very useful for Canadians and Europeans.

At long last a book that gets to the nitty gritty of buying property in Florida without blinding you with complex legal jargon.

The Authors experience shines through, lots of invaluable money saving tips, and warnings on where people have got in wrong - committing much more than they needed to and ending up in the wrong location.

This book was written for citizens of the United Kingdom and other countries. Its value to American buyers, investors, and developers is VERY LIMITED. It deals primarily with visa, British Law, and expatriate issues. It contains two types of information: 1. general comments regarding real estate in the U.S.A. and 2. Florida tourist information (e.g. ...the best place to eat dinner in Tampa). All financial information is expressed in terms of the British Pound.

        Book Description

So you want to live in Florida...great! Florida is a wonderful state. But, it is very large and very different from any other state. It offers a variety of climates and lifestyles. Don't let "I should have...," "I could have...," or "I would have," become part of your vocabulary. BE PREPARED before you make your choice.

It is difficult to make decisions about Florida based on experiences in other parts of the country. Much of the information published about Florida is by people or organizations with a vested interest such as builders, realtors, and friends or relatives who have had good (or bad) experiences. Promoters and developers often tell only the facts that make their offerings appear as the best options.

FLORIDA: Be Aware (Or Beware)!! does not give opinions, but gives the reader basic Florida information as well as questions to ask, options to consider, and how to obtain honest and correct information. Learn the advantages or the drawbacks of choices and decisions that you will have to make. Snap judgements and uninformed decisions can lead to wasted time, wasted money and unnecessary aggravation.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this book.......2002-08-27

This book is very generic and could be about many areas. The sections of the book that are about on Florida are very vague.
These Florida information sections could fill maybe one page.
Truly this book was the least helpful book I have read about Florida, and it is supposed to be about relocating there?
This book is really not going to help find that perfect location.
It has some good points about moving, but they could easily be about Texas, or Marylans, or Hawaii.
Do you self a favor and stay away from this book, a complete waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this book!!.......2002-06-19

Save your money. This book is so basic that it is worthless.

1 out of 5 stars Florida: Be Aware (Or Beware).......2002-04-23

...The information is so basic you could pick up the same data in a newspaper or magazine. For instance, one paragraph tells you to beware of electronic gates because sometimes they don't work. What! Sometimes your garage door doesn't work, does that mean you manually open it. This has provided me the inspiration I needed to finish my "How To" book. Only I will make sure the reader is provided with options, not just a fleeting passage of common knowledge.

        1 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!.......2002-03-28

As other customers expressed in their reviews, this book lacks any depth. I was looking for detail information to help my parents in their move to Florida. Instead, I felt they could have wrote this book. Save your money, please. This book is not worth [the money]. It's not even worth the cost of a magazine. It's full of vague or general information that any average American already knows.

5 out of 5 stars Cliff notes on moving.......2002-03-14

Once again proof that good things come in small packages, this book is a great guide to making critical choices.

The book doesn't try to tell you what to do. But it does a super job of giving sound guidelines on how to approach everything from getting a driver's license to selecting a homesite. It's a practical book and well worth the investment.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent colour plates; lousy choice of typeface........1999-09-03

Cranach was an extraordinary painter whose work deserves a beautiful book. This would be that book, if it hadn't been set in a horrible type which makes it very difficult to read. The flowery style of Mr. Stepanov seems to have been somewhat clumsily translated, with some long-winded phrasing. The plates are absolutely beautiful, which makes the book a bargain. I feel thoroughly satisfied, even with these small complaints.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful plates, bad translation.......1999-02-18

Reading this book is really a chore. The phrasing is disjointed and flies off on fanciful tangents and metaphors that sound awkward and serve only to confuse the reader. I attribute this to the translation, though some of the original scholarship may be faulty. The real reason for owning this book (and I bought it with full knowledge of its flaws) is its fabulously beautiful color plates. They are stunning, almost all full-page-- the best Cranach plates that I have seen anywhere. There are some interesting outlines comparing the development of Cranach's work with the development of Western Art in general in the back as well. Some of the opinions are interesting, though not ground-breakingly so, if you can manage to wade through the excessive language.

                        Book Description

A Million Miles Over Kansas City tells the story of John Wagner's life above us and all his adventures throughout the years. The author is one of Kansas City's best-known news directors, Charles Gray, and while he was working with Wagnor got inside the crazy escapades of life in the sky. Wagner is well known as one of the first radio personalitites in Kansas City who reported live breaking news and covered local traffic from above Kansas City. Wagner is known in the hearts of many as the original "Sky Spy."

According to Gray, Wagner changed the face of news reporting, as we know it today, by giving his detailed reports of major events in the Kansas City area. From covering the fire of the historic Coates House Hotel in 1978 to riots and strikes, Wagner was there for his dedicated listeners all over Kansas City.

Gray's book flows beautifully and keeps the reader on his toes, constantly giving fun and riveting details about Wagner and all the stories he covered throughout the years.
