The premise of Vendela Vida's terrific debut novel, And Now You Can Go, seems at first a tad depressing, in a Bernard Goetz, New-York-in-the-1980s kind of way. The narrator, a young woman named Ellis, is walking in Riverside Park when she is held up at gunpoint. The man assures her he doesn't want her money, and he doesn't push her into the bushes to rape her. Ellis notices the designer name on his glasses: Giorgio Armani; she begins to obsess on this detail. Then she starts to recite poetry to him to cheer him up about life. The encounter ends as abruptly as it began, when the man simply runs away down the street. Even though no blood has been shed, Ellis's life is utterly changed.

In fast, clean, funny prose, we find Ellis slipping adrift from her routine as a Columbia grad student and falling into a series of mini-romances. When she goes home to San Francisco for winter break, her mom suggests Ellis join her on a medical mission to the Philippines. The work and the heat and the exhaustion settle her down for the first time since the attack, and she returns to New York a little refreshed. There's one more encounter with the gunman, which Vida plays more comic than tragic. In fact, the strength of this novel is in the way Vida toys with her priorities. The scenes that ought to be fraught and suspenseful have a goofy kind of oh-well voice to them; the scenes that ought to be dull--like Ellis's run-ins with her annoying roommate--exert a weirdly compelling narrative drive. Both the author and her protagonist charm us utterly. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

Vendela Vida’s fearless, critically acclaimed fiction debut follows the unpredictable recovery of a young woman as she tries to make sense of her life after an encounter at gunpoint.

Accosted one afternoon in Riverside Park by a man who doesn't want to die alone, Ellis, a young grad student, talks her way out of the situation by reciting poetry to her desperate captor. He lets her go, but is she free? Rejecting the overtures of her kind-hearted boyfriend, the police, and the suitors who would like to save her, Ellis finds herself unable to escape the event. She leaves the city to visit her family; joins her mother on a medical mission to the Philippines. When she returns, Ellis discovers something more about life–perhaps even how to take back her own.

I read the first quarter and gave up. There's a lot of banality to wade through, and beyond that most of the ideas are nonsensical. The encounter that causes her trauma doesn't seem scary. If it was supposed to be, a million things could have been done to make it more so, and there would be no fear of losing the rich internal logic of the assailant in doing so as he demonstrated none. The aftermath of the event seems to suggest that it was originally written as a rape then changed. The break-up it triggered with her boyfriend was underexplained, as was her subsequent interest in two other boys, one of which lies to her saying something he wrote was about her in order to seduce her but doesn't try to get anything more from her than a kiss, then says he can't believe she fell for it. The other she is seemingly set up with on a blind date by someone who thinks now that she's had a gun pulled on her she's a perfect match for his former drug addict friend who has requested to be introduced to her. Why she even agrees to meet this guy makes no sense, and even when she does we're given no impression that she has any interest in him, it's just to be assumed when she dresses up and goes to a party because she's heard he'll be there. Even when she ends up going home with him after their actual date you're still left wondering what she likes about him. Or if she likes him. It would almost make more sense if she ended up killing the guy in his sleep, having previously made the guy the target of her pent up rage when he decided the novelty of her suffering warranted a meeting and strung him along until the time was right. But no, nothing so comparitively logical, just an underwritten relationship with no basis and nothing to emotionally connect to.
It's an inspiring book, in an "i could write this without trying... so why don't i" kind of way.

2 out of 5 stars Distant, well-written but too spare to care.......2007-02-19

This book kept me at a distance. The writing strives for Hemingway objectivity but only makes Ellis, the narrator, as baffling as the events that happen to her. I can't root for her, because I can't relate to her. Traumatized by being held at gunpoint in the park by a suicidal man, from whom she escapes by reciting poetry, she embarks on a series of seemingly random choices and adventures. She not only dumps her boyfriend but tears up his letters and literally runs away from him-- and I was as mystified as he was. She has encounters with various men that are sexual but unconsummated, she remembers her parents' separation, she goes on a mission to the Philippines with her mother, who is a nurse. All of these events are well and vividly described but I'm not sure what they mean to her, and I kept putting the book down. Her avoidance, denial, slightly manic behavior, and journey toward forgiveness are all told so bluntly I could feel close to Ellis. Her friends and acquaintances seem shallow and superficial-- even another ex-boyfriend who is suicidal. There are many convincing details of their behavior, but it felt like being trapped at someone's after-party party at four am-- really, I couldn't wait to get away from them. Some of her friends and family try to come through for her, but they lack the depth to do it consistently. The spareness in the well-written prose kept not only the events but the motivations and the emotions too objective and distant. Ellis' "just the facts" narration might be appropriate as a response to trauma but I was bored and kept putting the book down. Vida writes well and I admired her prose, but Ellis' story didn't move me.

2 out of 5 stars Not Really a Novel.......2005-07-08

This book reads not as a novel but as a set of assignments written in college (I won't say in a MFA program because they are not that good). After graduation, the author evidently got the idea that "Hey, if I add a few transition sentences, the New York Mugging piece, the Home with Family piece, and the Philippines piece could be woven together into something long enough to pass off as a book."
Alas, the weaving is not very good and none of the threads are pulled together at the end. The book just expires of its own tediousness. I am heartened to see that the passing off may have worked with her publisher but not with most of my fellow Amazon reviewers.
If you want to read a great book that weaves together seemingly disparate stories and then wraps them together into a powerful ending, try McEwan's Atonement.

Remember that time Amazon malfunctioned...and revealed Dave Eggers was the one writing all those glowing reviews of his friends? Yeah, that was pretty sweet...

3 out of 5 stars More a superior longer story than a novel.......2004-09-09

If you believe some of the reviewers here, creative writing (MFA) courses at American universities either remove any innate literary imagination and originality, or many of the students who successfully complete them don't possess any in the first place. At any rate, I'm not in any way competent to comment on the subject. I have grasped though that there's a lot of antagonism against Dave Eggers and the group of writers associated with his (defunct?) McSweeney's magazine, of which Vendela Vida is a part. Ignoring that, Vida's novel And Now You Can Go was interesting enough to me mostly because of the subtle humour and main character Ellis's inscrutability, which doesn't let up throughout the story. Vida's style has been passed off by some here as merely superficial and vapid, but I actually find that she convincingly describes a thoughtful, ironic woman in her early 20s, right about now. I think the story holds up as mild satire (the jaunt to the Philippines certainly contributes to that impression) but I agree with the oft-repeated criticism as to the choice of longer narrative form: And Now You Can Go would work better as a short story than a novel, or even novella. Some of the harsher critics go so far as to relegate this book to the 'Cosmo' or 'JANE' magazine fiction scrap heap. This I think is unfair: I would say Vida is a more serious, imaginative, talented writer than that.

Book Description

The popular fantasy novel Tinker introduced the inventor-heroine of the same name, who lives in a near-future Pittsburgh, which shares an interdimensional border with the land of the elves. In this sequel, Wolf Who Rules, the elven noble whose destiny is intertwined with Tinker, finds himself besieged from all sides. Viceroy and head of the Wind Clan, he had been able to guarantee the safety of everyone in his realm, but faced with an oni invasion, he has had to call in royal troops and relinquish his monopoly of Pittsburgh, which is now entirely stranded on Elfhome. He now struggles to keep the peace between the humans, the newly arrived Stone Clan, the royal forces, a set of oni dragons, the half-oni children who see themselves as human, and the tengu trying to escape their oni enslavement. Meanwhile, Tinker strives to solve the mystery of a growing discontinuity in Turtle Creek. She's plagued with inexplicable nightmares that may hold the keys to Pittsburgh's future. The only clue from the Queen's oracle to help Tinker is a note with five English words on it: Follow the Yellow Brick Road. Oni, and dragons and tengu - oh my!

5 out of 5 stars Magical Mystery Tour, Part 2.......2007-03-29

The first book of this duology, Tinker, made me hunt up ALL of Wen Spencer's other works. The action and background are different than when Tink was human, and she seems more tentative in her new role as an elf, but naturally she comes through with flying colors (called dragons.) I admit without shame that I like books where the protagonist is successful. Don't give me dark tragedy and expect me to enjoy it; there's more than enough of that in the real world. If you liked Tinker, you will certainly enjoy this sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Wishing I was Tinker...........2006-12-14

Tinker is the genius human turned elf who is just realizing the repercussions of her plan to stop the Oni from invading both Earth and Elfhome by the smashing of the interdimensional gates which tie the worlds together. Unfortunately her plan, while having been moderately successful, has stranded the city of Pittsburgh on the world of Elfhome. More than that Tinker has discovered a large discontinuity, an area which seems to be in flux between the three (or more) worlds.

Wolf Who Rules, also known as Windwolf, is the elf viceroy who has fallen in love with Tinker, changed her to elf so as not to lose her to her human frailties, and has made her his Domi. All too aware of his responsibilities Windwolf finds himself constantly deserting his new wife while she is still trying to adapt to her new world and is trying to put right the world altering damage she has caused.

Wolf Who Rules is a delightful follow-up to the story Tinker. In fact, I believe I may like this sequel even better than its predecessor. Windwolf and Tinker are constantly torn apart by their respective duties and obligations but even without knowing they seem to be in tune and foraging towards a common goal. Tinker is also confused by her feelings for her sekasha, Pony, although the other elves do not understand her very humanlike discomfort in these feelings.

Filled with action, adventure, science, fantasy and romance, Wolf Who Rules has it all. My only complaints is that in the rare parts where Windwolf and Tinker are actually together it seems like the emotions are carefully glossed over, as though the author was consciously trying to keep the emotional depth to as bare a minimum as possible. In contrast the scenes betweeen Pony and Tinker resonate with more emotional depth. I would definately recommend Wolf Who Rules to anybody with a taste to fantasy/sci-fi mixes.

5 out of 5 stars The Infamous Tinker is BACK!.......2006-09-21

Wolf Who Rules is the second book in a series that starts with Tinker. Although not as innocent as Tinker, remember Tinker was a slave to the Oni, this book is just as fun as the first book. I hope book number 3 doesn't take 2-3 years to come out like Wolf Who Rules did, but it is well worth the wait. Like her husband Windwolf, in High Elf he is named Wolf Who Rules thus the title, Tinker is now an Elf. She thinks she has succesfully destroyed the gates between Earth, Elfhome the homeworld of the elves, and the Oni homeworld, but a disturbance outside Pittsburgh won't go away and apparently keeps a window open to the Oni homeworld. Tinker musts close this window while fending off Oni; Tengu, a subspecies created by the Oni that mixes human and crow genes and allows them to fly, the 3 Elflords of the Stone Clan who are brought in to put down the Oni invasion; and protect the human citizens of Pittsburgh from the Elves executing Oni left and right. Oh yes she must also fend off 2 dragons as well.

Wen Spencer creates a fascinating blend of Western Elvish Mythology and Japanese and Chinese Mythology with modern technology and magic. Her charcters are very well developed, the twists and turns of the plot are very unpredictable and the pace is very intense. Windwolf's turning the human teenager Tinker into an elf and then marrying her has created lots of complications in Tinker's life, and this 18 year old child geniuse's struggles to bring her life back under control is fun to watch. I am also enjoying the development of human and elven societies' rules and regulations to live with each other is just as fun to watch as the story of Windwolf and Tinker.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2006-09-13

I was not happy about waiting so long to get this sequel. I thought Tinker was fantastic and was looking forward to this one. Wolf Who Rules is obviously about Windwolf, although the story was not centered around him as you would expect. Tinker still played a large part of this story. Spencer basically moved from Windwolf to Tinker as the chapters changed.

What was great about this novel was that the action never stopped and the characters, especially Windwolf, became more vivid and well rounded, Tinker makes major mistakes that she regrets dearly, the reader gets to learn more about Tinker's parents, and Pony's back. Gawd, he sounds sexy!

I'd rather not give anything away, so you'll have to read to find out more. What I can say is I hope this is not the end of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Wolf Rocks.......2006-08-10

I went into this novel expecting it to be centered on the Title Character. I wasn't far wrong, however the execution of this theory was unique. It certainly gave us a much deeper insight into Wolf Who Rules (aka Windwolf) psyche. But not by following his character the way Tinker (the novel) followed Tinker (the character.) Tinker, herself, was still the main vehicle of the novel as she is plunged into the mystical world of elven life. life tended to get in the way of the physics as she had to learn to understand the complex relationships between the castes and kin of the elves and to a bewildering extent the tengu as well, in addition to her own newly discovered familial (or perhaps I should say genetic) relations. Struggling to absorb the different aspects of her life and new physiology (expecially her new magical/mystical vulnerabilities through her transformed elven genetics), Tinker takes us on a organic ramble through the elven country-side of Pittsburg instead of the scientific race that we gasped through in the first novel.
All in all WWR's was a highly interesting look into Windwolf's life (the life of a domi on elfholme) through Tinker's eyes. Different in flavor from the novel "Tinker" but a solid and highly enjoyable sequel.

i bought this book way back in i believe 91' or 92' or was it 89' 90'? anyway it has everything a person could ask for! alian abductions, man-eating dinosaurs! yes! it was 96' or 97' that i picked it up again and reread it, my memory is so bad that it was almost new again! now here we are in 01' almost 02' and i just ran across it in one of my box o books and i'm gonna read it again! i thought i'd see if any new books have been put out by the author. i'm thinking that i'm not gonna get my hopes up for any other installments in the Charon series any time SOON!

this is a great read. pick it up!

4 out of 5 stars Great Science Fiction with a Loony Twist.......2000-08-13

What do you get when you cross Michael Crichton with the Neal Simon? Rick Gauger, with better writing than Crichton! Now if Gauger just had the production capacity of Crichton, I could get a more regular fix. I have been reading the work of Rick Gauger for almost 25 years. He makes a wonderful blend of hard science fiction, great writing style, and silly situations ( plus sex, you gotta have some sex, right?). Charon's Ark has as its intriguing premise that Pluto and its moon Charon are not what they seem. They are in fact alien constructions not of this solar system. From this initial premise of an ecological ark built to last millions of years, Gauger spins out a boatload of ideas like I haven't enjoyed since I read Larry Niven's "Ringworld". And you know the writing has to be good if you end up rooting for the fat kid with acne ( the annoyer turned hero, Charlie) to get the girl. This is the book that would have been made into a dinosaur movie if Robert Zemeckis (Back To the Future) was directing instead of Steven Speilberg. I give the book 4 stars because the remaining 2 in the series may be even better, so I have to leave room for improvement. Plus he has been so darned slow in getting the other 2 out that I have to make my displeasure known somehow! But I hear the other two are almost done!

      5 out of 5 stars A ruthless analyzation by the author's daughter........1998-05-30

Having to live with him for upwards of 14 years, I think I've got my dear ol' dad (or Doddy) figured out. He puts a lot of himself into Charlie Freeman. I have always found this book to be incredibly funny, and a very good read. I can't wait for the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Announcement by Author.......1998-04-14

Balzac said that there's no friend like a reader, and he was right. Thanks to everyone for favorable comments about Charon's Ark. Volumes 2 and 3 of the Charon's Ark tale are called Charon's Children and Charon Is Coming. I hate multi-volume sci-fi novels, but my publisher bribed me into wrapping up the story. All three volumes of the Charon's Ark "epic" contain all of my favorite things: Spaceships, aliens, robots, dinosaurs, brash adolescents, and sexy nice girls in their summer underthings. Read 'em and meet the Bigbirds, land a UFO in Seattle, shoot it out with the Proctor, watch Chela rob a bank and steal a truck, and see Eva not get what she deserves!

5 out of 5 stars Somewhat out of date but still fun and interesting.......1997-12-02

This is a creative and fast moving book, written 10 years ago, but still fun and worth reading. A planeload of mostly gifted high school students are alien jacked and sent off to crew the Ark of Charon, which has an admirable mission of preserving life forms. But, alas, there are flies in the ointment, from the Proctor, an evil computer program, to the existing crew, who are getting old and unreliable. What I particularly enjoyed were the characters, who so took me back to the old high school days. There was Eva, a narcissic empty minded teen who cared only about her nails and hair die. I knew people like that, and didn't like them then and didn't like Eva, either (interesting when a book is well written enough to make you dislike weak characters; this did). Charlie was my hero, saving mankind and himself in the process. Well written and fun, and worth reading even now. Funny, though how perceptions of computer use can so dramatically change in 10 years. See for yourself.

      Book Description

In this guide to the cosmology of ancient Egypt, Jeremy Naydler recreates the experience of living in another time and place. Temple of the Cosmos explores Egypt's sacred geography and mythology; but more importantly, it reveals with unprecedented clarity an ancient consciousness in tune with the rhythms of the earth. The ancient Egyptians experienced their gods not as remote beings but rather as psychic and natural forces, transpersonal energies that played a part in everyday life. This direct experience of the gods shaped the Egyptian concepts of human development, healing, magic, and the soul's journey through the Underworld as described in the Books of the Dead. While building on the pioneering efforts of R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz and others, Temple of the Cosmos is much more than a recapitulation of previous theories of Egyptian spirituality. Rather, this book breaks new ground by placing the work of other Egyptologists in an original, magical context. The result is a brilliant reimagining of the Egyptian worldview and its sacred path of spiritual unfolding.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient Egypt is alive.......2006-03-23

Jeremy Naydler beckons us to a distant horizon, somewhere inside our mind. He turns the light on ancient Egypt. We gaze at the world as an Egyptian might have done. The landscape and heavenscape of the ancient mind rushes in with his scholarship which is mesmerizing and illuminating. We have gone far astray of the cosmic temple, but Naydler allows us to recall the ancient majesty of cosmically integrated thinking.

      4 out of 5 stars for open-minded readers.......2000-06-17

This is an ambitious book which attempts to explore the controversial issue of the Ancient Egyptian consciousness, their thought processes and patterns, and how it manifested itself in both their daily lives and the material remains. In recounting this 'sacred culture,' the author also looks at their medical abilities. Many authors have contended that the origins of Western civilisation and beliefs did not lie in classical Greece and in Judeo-Christianity, but in ancient Egypt. This book has black and white illustrations, with footnotes providing both orthodox and unorthodox bibliographic references. It is recommended for the open-minded and the interested.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterly Book on Ancient Egyptian Theology.......2000-05-13

Jeremy Naydler reveals esoteric ancient Egyptian theology and initiation that is illuminating. The sacred science of the Egyptians is scholarly conveyed. Other recommended books- "Serpent in the Sky"; "Egyptian Mysteries" (Lucie Lamy); "The Sirius Mystery"; "ZELATOR"; "KYBALLION"; and all the books by Graham Hancock & Rudolph Steiner.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best book on ancient Egypt ever written........1999-02-24

This may be the best book on ancient Egypt ever written. Brilliantly researched and breathtakingly articulate, this book brings ancient Egyptian spirituality back to life. Extraordinary!

4 out of 5 stars Well written, with a good presentation, I didnt always agree.......1997-12-30

Naydler writes a good solid book, and presents an interesting idea about the seemingly contradicting creation myths that seems to make sense of it all. I liked his style of writing, I just didnt always agree with the interpretation of the egyptian gods or certain religious practices.

      4 out of 5 stars I agree--inspiring!.......2005-09-18

The focus of this book is the recipes, with health tips and benefits of various ingredients added in. The recipes are inspiring--and are part of the encouragement I need as I transition from coffee to herbal teas as my beverage of choice.

      4 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2001-08-11

I loved this book. While I've only used the smoothie/juice recipes, this book has provided me with great results. The recipes are excellent, but you also get a sense of what things you can use to create your own.

In fact, it's the only book I leave out on my kitchen counter, since I know I'm going to use it at least 3 times a week!

5 out of 5 stars Ingredients for Delicious, Healthy Living.......2000-08-16

This book is a must for everyone who wants to maintain good health as well as focus on recipes to improve well-being. Having recently learned a little about the benefits of green tea, I'm happy to see suggestions which add some variety to this beverage. I've always been a fan of smoothies, and there are plenty in this little (but powerful) book.

Up until now I haven't used soy milk very much. But Anita Hirsch has included so many ways to prepare and blend this, that several are bound to become favorites.

I also appreciate seeing many other types of drink: soups and teas as well as refreshingly cold beverages. Drink To Your Health has already become a ready reference in my kitchen.

Sophmoric attempt at imparting some minor natural health knowledge. This "book" would best be found in an elementary school library. Author calls herself a "blonde bombshell" that can still eat Haagen Daz. That pretty much sums it up folks.
I think the real reason she could not find a publisher is not due to her age, but the book itself. Let's face reality here, kay?

4 out of 5 stars Mysterious Healing Powers of Chicken Soup Found Out!.......2004-10-12

Your Health Is in Your Kitchen is a small compendium of natural elements (including those found in most chicken soups) which relieve or suppress a lot of symptoms caused by hunger, fatigue and common ailments (i.e. colds). It also comes in handy as a guide and a planner for making recipes using the items it lists. I enjoy a hot toddy when I'm getting a sinus cold/sore throat and this book gives the basics of how to create one leaving the option of putting other items in the base up to the reader. The book also contains some interesting facts about some of the herbs/spices/plants noted. For instance, I'm sure most readers will know that Aloe Vera can be used for burns but did you know it that the juices can also be taken internally as a drink?

I found this book to be a fascinating read about the many herbs that are found most common in the kitchen. If I had any suggestions for future books, it would be to include more recipes (believed to be covered in a future book according to author's website), maybe tips on growing your own herb garden, and maybe a bit more depth on some other herbs that have, in recent years, been used to promote healing like Ginko Biloba.

Cheers to this book and many more successes.

                    Book Description

Although precious metals have been part of the lives of New Yorkers since the city's founding, until now comparatively little information about them has been available. Consisting of objects made, sold, or owned in New York, the excellent collection at the Museum of the City of New York includes more than 1400 objects of silver and other precious metals, including hollowware, flatware, and jewelry, from the 17th century to the present.

Through essays; biographies of craftsmen, designers, and retail firms; and catalog entries, this generously illustrated two-volume set examines the precious metals trades and usage of precious metals artifacts since the third quarter of the 17th century. Entries include photographs of the objects and their marks, with measurements, description, references, accession information, and history. Biographies of craftsmen and firms update and in some cases, correct, existing information.

4 out of 5 stars home decorating basics by Pamela Hastings.......2000-11-11

I am a new home owner and haven't sewn in years. This book was wonderful, it gave ideas for planning my decor, selecting fabrics and had great projects for a sewer like me. I made some pillows and a tablecloth the directions were very clear. I definitely recommend this book.

                          Book Description

This chronologically organized catalogue raisonee of Zupan's graphic oeuvre presents 50 reproductions of serigraphs made in his studios in Mallorca, or recent lithgraphs produced in Paris. Various techniques are explained, and each limited edition is described. These are unique works of art because the artist controlled each phase of production - from drawing over 800 color plates tomixing his own inks. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist and all of the plates have been destroyed.
