HAD POTENTIAL TO BE A GREAT READ, BUT..............2007-10-01
When I started reading this book, I was immediately taken with the Swan family. I grieved with them, etc., and could not put this book down. Somewhere around page 200, this author lost her momentum. The last part of this book became, for this reader, somewhat boring. I'm rather surprised that all of the seemingly erudite people Mitchard "acknowledges" did not provide her with better guidance/information. The beginning of this book had all of the elements for a really great read. [A lovely family -- really nice people, a terrible tragedy, trauma, forgiveness, etc.] Plus, the writing was really good!! Then she seemed to lose it! Things occurred that would ordinarily would not -- I don't want to give anything away. In my opinion, Scot Early would not become what he had become [I have years of experience in this field] -- again, I don't want to spoil this read for anyone. It became sloppy after or on about page 200. I would recommend this with caution. It is not what I call "great." Perhaps, a gripping read that simply does not sustain itself -- what a pity!!

This was one of those books I didn't want to end. Ronnie was a great character. The book really sucked you in and made you feel what Ronnie felt having her two little sisters murdered and all the grief and anguish she felt. the author really made you root for this character and made you still think about her and the story long after the last page was read. I highly recommend this book. I didn't think I would like the religious part of it, but I don't feel the author overdid that part of it at all. I think it was there to explain how everyone was dealing with the grief.

I find myself drawn to books narrated by young people. Maybe it is the innocence, the feeling that their lives are continually developing that makes their voice so intriguing. The narrator of this story is Ronnie Swan, a Mormon teen whose two younger sisters were brutally murdered by a schizophrenic neighbor. It follows her family's grief, the relationship between Ronnie and her parents as they handle the deaths in a vastly different manner. Some are capable of forgiving so easily, while for others that day may never come. Mitchard's writing is smooth and sure as she weaves the tale of how Ronnie navigates through her life, the people she meets, the feelings she fights, all the while grappling with the idea of revenge. It is a beautiful story of love and redemption, one that I would highly recommend.

The story is definitely a downer: two little girls murdered by a man who should be on medication, the reactions of their parents, and mostly, the reaction of their older sister. The story flowed well, but the dialogue between the sister and her parents didn't ring true to me. The book is thought-provoking.

Three and a half stars - Very cute.......2007-01-20
I bought this book on sale for under 2 bucks, because I thought it looked cute. And that's what I got - very cute. When I first started reading this book, I was not that impressed. The book moved along slowly and I didn't have enough time to really "get into it" during the holidays. So I picked it up again recently after a few weeks and started over. It was a much better read the second time around. And the part just after I put the book down is where is starts to get really good - that's when the romantic angst and the plot-driven drama kicks into full throttle. The exotic setting and the original story also added to my enthusiasm for reading this book. Even though there are some scenes that I personally would have rewritten, the characters are realistic, the plot steadily grows better and the kisses are very well written. Though the Christianity seemed a bit preachy, there was enough romance to satisfy my needs. I look forward to reading more by this author.

This book has it's ups and downs. The plot is great and the book has an interesting setting. Most of the characters are real and believable. The guy in the romance is portrayed well but tends to focus too much on his dearly departed wife. There is a reference in the book to the fact that he had fantisized about Jenna even when he was married, seeing her picture on the wall. What about faithfulness to his wife? The girl is a little rich girl trying to be strong in the big jungle. I've never read a book where I was rooting for her to die by the end. It has a sappy ending with him rushing ask her to marry him and all that stuff... There are references to God, but I think it parallels too much with the trashy romances you find by the dozens in bookstores everywhere. It doesn't have any trash but it comes pretty close.

I enjoyed this book from the very first page to the very last. The story and characters were so interesting and heartwarming. I got so Involved in the story, that I lost all track of time. This was the first novel I read by Linda Windsor and I look forward to reading another one by her.

I've always been intrigued by "jungle books" and it this one didn't disapoint me. It's filled with not only God and romance but adventure. I really enjoyed this book. The chemistry between Jenna and Adam is awesome. Definately a must have!

After accidentally ordering "Addictive Thinking" I remembered that there is no such a thing as "accidentally; I finished the book in few hours and started reading it all over again and right away decided to order two more books by Twerski. Coming from academic philosophy, it was refreshing to find a positive and un-complicated yet so thought-provoking writing about an issue so deep. Empowered by Twerski's "Life is too Short," I found new courage in me, and decided to begin working on a non-academic, practical writing on the subject myself. Yes, his words are THAT powerful.
One restrain thought: as a practicing Jew, though I could understand the rationale not to touch G-d from a religious perspective in his other books, I was a bit disappointed not to find anything "Jewish" about the Spiritual Self and G-d.
Fantastic book on what spirituality REALLY means.......2003-07-13
Twerski has a very interesting background and training. He was a son of a rabbi, but went to medical school instead and now runs a substance abuse center. This makes him very qualified to talk on the subject of spirituality in recovery, which he does brilliantly in The Spiritual Self. A short book, I consider it a must read for anyone in a 12-step spiritual recovery program (as I am). We always wonder what people mean by saying 'I want to get more spiritual'. Well, the answer is explained eloquently and simply in Twerski's book.

Not what I had hoped.......2007-02-10
I've had this cookbook for quite some time - looks like an older edition than is sold here. I had never really used it, but recently found some tasty recipes that I wanted to make. I have to say I was rather disappointed by the end result of all three recipes I made last week. They lacked real flavor and, on top of it all, were really labor intensive. Not meals you'd want to make after a workday. I feel that I find so many more interesting vegetarian recipes elsewhere.

I bought this book as a gift for my wife and wow, we love it. The recipes for the soups are fantastic, easy to follow, and delicious! The split pea recipe is particularly good (even if we do tend to throw a smoked ham shank into it)! One word of caution, however, the soup recipes make a LOT of soup. If you are only cooking for 1-2 people, you might consider in halfing the recipe.

This cookbook serves as a continuation of the wonderful recipes from the Claire's Corner Copia Cookbook. Claire presents delicious and fairly simple recipes which use lots of fresh vegetables (as well as whole grains and beans). The recipes are health-conscious, but use dairy and eggs where appropriate for flavor. The finished products always bring back fond memories of eating at Claire's Corner Copia in New Haven, Connecticut (FYI--which is certified kosher by the local Young Israel rabbi Michael Whitman). Try the pumpkin pie recipe (made with tofu)--delicious!

There are more in-depth books on buying and selling at auctions and online auctions that readers will want to consult. This briefs you on gemstones at auction. The publisher, Gemstone Press, has comprehensive guides on diamonds, pearls, etc. that are more in-depth as well. Convenient to have it all in one book, but keep in mind these limitations.
Excellent color photo section, helpful drawings, great charts. Probably a good starting title for this area, but I'd want to read more books before venturing into buying and selling gems at auction.

Caveat Emptor to the low voltage outdoor lighting enthusiasts.
I was led to this book by another reviewer; I wouldn't have found it since it didn't come up on my usual"landscape lighting" search. My specialty is low voltage outdoor lighting and I'm always looking for a better book on the topic. This isn't it.
The title refers to both indoor and outdoor lighting but the text is 90% indoor and only 10% outdoor when one might expect 50/50. My 20 years in low voltge outdoor lighting was preceded by 20 years of interior lighting design so I feel justified in claiming "expert opinion". The text on interior lighting contains nothing new; the text on outdoor low voltage lighting is rather perfunctory. There are only a handful of photographs (8, and that's a stretch) illustrating outdoor lighting and perhaps 100 or more of interior lighting schemes. Clearly this is an interior lighting book with a bit of exterior lighting thrown in to justify the title (and to perhaps broaden the market).
I was disappointed in my expectations that this new Ortho book would update the 1984 Ortho book on outdoor lighting which is reviewed along with a number of other books dealing with this topic on this site. With me the issue arises from the fact that there are many, many books on interior lighting and very, very few on exterior lighting. What were the marketing people thinking of when they slotted a book into a crowded segment while giving short shrift to a topic of growing interest and few books?
The prominent placement of "outdoor" next to "indoor" on the night scene cover may mislead someone in search of a landscape lighting book. What they seek is not here. The 1984 Ortho book on outdoor lighting merely needed updating to include the latest innovations in exterior lighting equipment and techniques. The only seriously out-of-date portions of the earlier book dealt mainly with lamps (light bulbs) of an earlier era since modern miniature lamp types offer more efficient, longer-lasting, compact light sources with a broad range of wattages and beam patterns that introduce economy and precision into the realm of low voltage outdoor lighting. This new book was a missed opportunity to modernize the text of an old book that had great information and wonderful photographs. Go figure.

Stunning Imagery!.......2003-04-18
"The Best of 3D Graphics" is an amazing pictorial journey through some of the best 3D on the planet. This book is gorgeous! Art in print is always a gamble - I've seen some great Michelangelos mutilated by bad reproduction - but this book rises to the challenge with gleaming images in richly saturated color vibrating on every page. It is excellently edited (clearly by a lover of color and composition) so the experience of looking becomes an art in itself; the images flow from page to page in an aesthetic and sensitive arrangement. Everything about this book breathes art, from the font choice to quotes about art to the awesome artists' methodologies in the last chapter. The web has made digital imagery instantly accessible to both viewer and artist; the problem is that online galleries show everything, no matter how bad the "art." Many times I've come away from these galleries feeling depressed and with sore eyes. "The Best of 3D Graphics" is an antidote; every single image worth studying (and be amazed by) with lots to think about. And it's cumulative - the more I looked, the more intriguing, enriching, the experience became.
Excellently crafted, marvelous attention to detail, stunning imagery, with the added bonus of the artists' work process and thoughts - and you've got a book that gets my vote for "Best of 2003".
Great Idea, Wish i had thought of it . . ........2003-04-11
Someone has printed one of those on-line 3D galleries :-} I love 3D; it is most definitely my favorite genre of art and only about 25 years old. You can really see that the talent of the artist is by far the most important trait by looking at the work of different 3D artists using the same software. Usually most of that credit is attributed to what software or hardware was used. It was interesting to see such good quality work was created with software other than the usual four programs {Maya, LightWave, XSI, 3dsMax}. It was also very nice to have a CD with more content; I can never get enough of that 3D imagery. What a great ice breaker for the office! What a wonderful way to break away from that cartoon/animation mold that 3D often gets thrown into and show the versatility of 3D in a print medium. I liked that there was a list of contributing artists with contact information. I very much prefer hard covers.
A few suggestions for the next book. It would look nicer with glossy pages. The images on the CD are way too small. Some of the pages are of a color not very complementary to the art contained on them. A couple of 3D videos on the CD would be nice. Maybe a video interview or two with the 3D artists. There should be plenty of room on the CD for this extra content, and even more room on a DVD.
Perhaps the publishers could include the option for people to buy poster size prints with a large portion of the royalty going to the artist :-}
I would also like to have seen a page dedicated to the talent and toil of the artist. A good 3D artist has to learn very complex software with menus and concepts 1000 times more complex then any spreadsheet. They must have knowledge of traditional film techniques, of camera and lighting. A good art education helps tremendously with color, composition and theoretical concepts. But most importantly there has to be the raw talent and of course a large investment in expensive hardware, software. Then there is the time invested, years of school and then years of sitting in front of a computer. After developing this talent, some of these images took days, weeks, or even months to create.
Often this talented 3D artist is paid less than a plumber, or in many cases is not paid at all for the work they produce. I think a statement like the one in the paragraph above would do nicely to promote the appreciation for what I believe to be the most gorgeous art on the planet.
People looking at this 3D art may come to realize its true value. I believe this book may eventually contribute to that cause. Hopefully future artists will be justly honored and compensated for their work. The art & video industries are unique as people do not associate the horrors of third world sweatshop labor to the compensation offered for work of this caliber that is produced by these tremendously talented artists.
Buy the book, contact one of these artists in it and ask them to produce some 3D for you !
Awesome Graphics!.......2003-04-01
I just got this book and was amazed at the wonderful digital graphics that were in it.
I noticed that many pictures were made with programs that were reasonably priced and within the reach of most people, thus inspiring even the most amateur digital artist to be able to eventually achieve great works of 3d art!
It was definetly inspiring and I recommend it to all of those who wish to be in the 3d graphic realm.

Wow, what a great book. I just got my copy in the mail yesterday and I can't stop picking it up to browse through the pages. The artwork and presentation are truly first class.
In a time and society saturated with computer graphics, this book is truly a gem. It showcases the best of what the 3D world has to offer from talented artisits around the globe. These are not simple 3D renderings anyone can do with an out-of-the-box 3D modeller, they are true works of art. The people at Rockport Publishers have also done a superb job of printing with quality inks on the finest paper. The images jump out at you with their vibrancy and detail.
My favorite feature is in the back of the book where some of the artists walk you throught the process of creating their images. Working with 3D, this will be an invaluable tool and inspiration.
In summary, if you have an interest in well-done 3D graphics or just want a really cool coffee table book, The Best of 3D Graphics is sure to please!

She just...didn't get it........2002-03-26
I read this as a Madonna fan--not a rabid, love-everything-she-is fan, but an fairly discerning, admiring fan. And all I have to say is this: if you don't really get Madonna, and want one woman's opinion on her impact, this book might be alright for you. But if you have any opinion on her at all, or are any kind of fan, this lady (the author) is probably going to get under your skin. I found myself cringing continually at what she said about Madonna's body of work. She obviously hadn't understood what Madonna was trying to do with many of the career moves she made, an understanding that I think is pretty easy to reach if you read the interviews, watch/listen to the work and take the public reaction into account. She overanalyzed the simple moves and brushed over the motives and purposes behind the most important ones, and this drove me crazy. By the end of the book I felt that I was no better or worse for reading it, though I felt a little inclined to do my own Madonna commentary, the right way this time--by disagreeing with her, I formed some of my own opinions more fully, but to be honest, this book does not take any huge stands to disagree with. The author just simply doesn't get Madonna. Perhaps she'd do a better study of Cher or Barbara Streisand.
I thought this book would have been much better if the author had approached it as a sort of long, personal essay about Madonna's effect on her life. I would have been able to accept that. But an in-depth study of Madonna...she simply isn't qualified.
On a more complimentary note, the title and cover art are wonderful.

Ok, i bought this book because it was the only title available at the bookstore. I find that this book is for one certain type of fan. If you want to look at Madonna on a global, cultural scale, this book is for you. It's purpose, in my opinion, is to situate Madonna, explain her and compare her to others. But it seems like there is soooo much talk about other people, there's no Madonna. The author throws in her name here and there, but, if you're like me, it won't be enough. If you're the kind of fan that wants to read about Madonna, and no one else, you just want info on her, this book isn't for you. Let's be honest- all we want to know about is Madonna. I don't care about other actors or singers or 1950's radio. Get to Madonna!

A New Interesting Book of Madonna Studies.......1998-06-22
As a Madonna fan with a feminist identity (I'm a member of an organization of Women's Studies), I have read so many books and articles about her. What has confused me is that most of the authors have "objectified" the artist. But Karlene Faith does not. I'm curious about what Faith thinks of Madonna's "Ray of Light" era, and of her own recent explanation about her works in the early 1990s. Anyway, BAWDY & SOUL is an interesting, recommendable book. Even if you are not a scholar of so-called "Madonna Studies", I think you can enjoy it. When it is translated into my mother tongue, I think I would tell my friends to read it.
