Book Description
Ten years after his "dazzling" (San Francisco Chronicle), "unforgettable" (Newsday) bestselling debut novel, A Yellow Raft in Blue Water, Michael Dorris returns to the family at the core of that work to write the rich score of the "full-blown, complex opera of his new novel, Cloud Chamber" (Robb Forman Dew).
Opening in late-nineteenth-century Ireland and moving to Kentucky and finally to the high plains of Montana, Cloud Chamber tells the extraordinary tale of Rose Mannion and her descendants. Over a period of more than one hundred years, Rose's legacy of love and betrayal is passed down from generation to generation until it meets the promise of reconciliation in Rayona, the indomitable part-black, part Native American teenage girl at the center of A Yellow Raft in Blue Water.
Cloud Chamber is truly a tour de force, a powerful, rich tale about the energy and persistence of love.

In this broad and ambitious novel, Michael Dorris demonstrates his gift for crafting the distinct voices of characters in varied settings. His story traces the family history of figures from his stunning first novel, A Yellow Raft in Blue Water, which was itself an intergenerational narrative woven from the stories of three Native American women--daughter, mother, and grandmother. Cloud Chamber begins in Ireland, crosses the Atlantic, and heads west from Kentucky to Montana to Washington State, following the generations. Intermarriage creates a diverse mix of family stories and individual identities. The myths about and courageous actions of ancestors emerge as the shaping forces of family legacy. Dorris is daring in the range of his narrative and successful in casting his characters' deep humanity.

what a let down.......2006-10-16
i read this after loving a yellow raft on blue water. i was unable to care about these characters- even the ones i already knew and loved from the other book. it is full of tangents, stories that start and go nowhere, characters introduced only to disappear, overly sentimental and generic dialogue. i was bored.
Not sure.......2005-09-04
He definitley has a style of story telling that leaves a bit of the "yea right's" behind. Some of the plot is a bit unrealistic and interrupts the flow of the story. also, some of the characters go into these long tangents of thought and it really leaves the reader gasping for relief. Now that said, the writing in terms of wording has a bit of Erdrich's great style, fantastic imagery, colors and characters you seem to envy at one point or another. I loved that dorris wrote an epic novella here. we need more of them in general. be forewarned however, a lot of the plot is revealed in clouds for the yellow raft and vice versa. you really need to read them together, preferably beginning with this one. (I had to struggle to remember who aunt pauline was. still don't know. This book gets my four stars because simply, I couldn't put it down. I took about 90 pages to grab my interest. I really had to stick with it, and from then on the plot got better. feeling like the last two chapters should have been an epilogue though, an aside if you will bc they don't really involved the story. It almost makes it seem like there was a need to insert rayona into the clouds book like promised on the back cover. not a bad read...
Fantastic. A pastiche family........2005-03-16
This book is truly incredible. Dorris was a brilliant writer and I am only disappointed that I didn't find my way to this book sooner.
In many ways this book reminds me of Ann Marie MacDonald's "Fall On Your Knees" in that it is a family saga that spans over generations. In this case however, the family is a hodgepodge of different origins. Dorris makes the mismatched pieces fit like a glove.
In my opinion, this novel is a very realistic display of family and he in turns displays the tragic ugly side of humanity along with its utter hilariousness.
I've heard that this book serves as both a prequel and sequel to "Blue Raft on Yellow Water." Though I have not had the pleasure of reading that book yet, I can assuredly say that "Cloud Chamber" stands strongly on its own and it is a true joy to experience. I laughed out loud a countless number of times, and was fuming mad an equal number of times. I had much trouble putting it down. The book simply begs to be finished.
Clearly, the point is that we don't get to choose our family, and therefore must simply make the best of it in whatever ways we can. As Dorris shows, sometimes it takes a vivid imagination.
I challenge anyone to read this and not find familiar quirks within their own family structure. As paraphrased by a character in the novel, "Thank God we are not all normal!"
Prelude and Postlude.......2003-05-14
`Cloud Chamber' is the follow-up novel to his earlier `A Yellow Raft on Blue Water'. To say follow-up, however, is somewhat misleading. It is actually both a prequel and a sequel to that novel. Whereas in YRBW we are presented with the history of three generations of women in a backwards progression, in `Cloud Chamber' we begin several generations prior, leading one to speculate (even unto the last quarter of the book) why exactly is one reading this, and what relationship it truly has to YRBW?
The patient will be rewarded in her or his reading. We begin in Ireland, with a tale of passion and betrayal (as only the Irish under English-domination could seem to muster). This account, almost unrelated to the rest of the story save as the seed of the action, actually provides an undertow of passion and betrayal felt by the family's succeeding generations.
When the young, best-prized son becomes a priest, and then dies tragically in a rather stupid accident, both the mother and the woman-in-love (who marries his brother, ironically, to stay close to him) get angry with the entire world, to no good end.
Men, when they figure in the story at all, are usually distant characters, not fully developed, and the full implication is that the literary character is not very developed because the human character is likewise undeveloped. That being said, this is not feminist-philosophy here; as happened so often, women often had a very different psychological and personality development, given cultural mores, and perhaps the view of the men could never be complete given this societal-enforced distance.
We come up on Rayona's lineage from the other side this time, through her father, but in this, it is very much the matriarchal line. We learn that, even given strong women of intelligence and passion, the wisps of reality still can make for a struggle for survival. Chronic disease runs through the family; great need (most often unacknowledged) contrasts and conflicts with great strength.
The story ends in hope, and renews the hope at the end of YRBW. Rayona has a history and prehistory of tension and passion and difficulty, but also one of love and hopefulness, and this is the conclusion.
This is a truly intriguing way of introducing an entire new cultural element into the storyline, and an innovative way of following up a great novel.
Give it a chance........2003-03-10
First read Yellow Raft in Blue Water before reading Cloud Chamber.
Do not expect it to be the same. The writing style is excellent, and also very different. Stick with it and the last chapters will make it all worthwhile.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Mark has grown up, and with the assistance of a tough-minded reporter who changes his mind on what his duty is, has discovered what has been done to him, and what the military's real agenda is.
He tells them to piss off, or else, and sets out to determine how he should live his life. To complicate matters, other more than human people are appearing, one of his former keeper's own creating.
This is still very well done, it is a pity they have taken it from the Max line to dumb it down and make it more kid friendly.
Amazing.......2007-04-12
This is to DC's JLA what "BATTLE HYMN: Farewell to the Golden Age" was to Marvel's Avengers. Excellent writing...I mean EXCELLENT, and great art to boot. Puts characters we all know in a more realistic and contemporary light. One of the best comics I've read in a while. Up there with Transmetropolitan, Planetary(Spoof on FF), and POWERS.
The first three Volumes are worth buying, the sidetracking stories(SP: Hyperion, SP: Dr. Spectrum, SP: Nighthawk) aren't as good, but worth a read. Though the Nighthawk book WAS pretty good, with a unique doppelganger of the Joker.
A very well done revamp.......2007-01-22
This is the second volume of the Marvel MAX series Supreme Power, collecting issues 7-12. After issue 12 Marvel removed the MAX label, which didn't alter the content very much, except for the occasional nude shot.
Straczynski obviously thought out this revamp of the old marvel Squadron Supreme very carefully. Volume One (Contact) tells the origins of Hyperion, Nighthawk, Blur, (His original name was Whizzer)and Dr. Spectrum. It also features cameos by Power Princess and Amphibian that would probably be confusing if you didn't pick up this volume, which involves them more as the story progresses.
The action definitely picks up with Volume 2, and I love Gary Frank's pencils. His art makes the fight scenes incredible. I can't believe he isn't more well-known. The whole story (vol 1 and 2)reads like a well written novel, with Straczynski pacing everything perfectly. By the time Hyperion cuts loose, it's a sledgehammer of action that hits you right in the gut, thanks to the MAX banner and Frank's ultra detailed art.
I recommend this volume to any comic fan, but it's a little better if you have already read CONTACT. Excellent art, very well done plot, Great read.
Haunting, Bloody, and Brilliant.......2005-12-22
Absolutely horrifying and engaging at the same time, Supereme Power: Powers and Principalities reprints Supreme Power #7-12. Hyperion, growing disenchanted with his life as a government puppet, begins to seek answers as to who he is and what his origins are. However, the more he learns, the less he knows about himself.
Meanwhile, the connections between the rest of the super powered beings begin to strengthen and weave together, but what the consequences of those meetings and connections will be could be disastrous to the entire world, especially with the emergence of the Princess, who provides an alternate origin for both she and Hyperion. There is also the background story of a mysterious, horrific serial killer, and greater insight into the deeply disturbed mind of Nighthawk.
The storyline is brilliant and horrifying. The art is beautiful and haunting. Over all, this would make a delicious addition to anyone's graphic novel collection. It could also be enjoyed without readying Superme Power Contract, though reading Contact first might clear up some questions that would otherwise develop.
This is meant for mature readers, and is in no way suitable for younger readers. However, for the rest of us, I highly recommend this book for the rest of us.
P.S. If you like this series and you haven't read Watchmen yet by Moore and Gibbons then what are you waiting for? Watchmen is way better than Supreme Power but is the same type of story.
The saga continues.......2004-12-11
Babylon 5 creator and Amazing Spider-Man scribe J. Michael Straczynski continues his brilliant and mature look at Squadren Supreme characters in this second collected edition of Supreme Power. Government pawn super-human Mark Milton, AKA Hyperion, has learned the truth behind his origin and to say he isn't happy is saying it lightly. After a cataclysmic battle with Joe "Doc Spectrum" Ledger, Hyperion is a man on a mission against the people who have manipulated him all his life, only the government has their own plans on how to deal with him themselves. In the end, Hyperion's salvation lies in a powerful, beautiful, and very naked, woman named Zarda who may hold the key as to just why Hyperion is here, and what he is destined to do. Culminating with Nighthawk and the Blur on the trail of a super powered serial killer, all the main players appear ready for the next stage as questions are answered, but even more become raised. Straczynski's story gets better and better and more complex with each passing page, illustrated by Gary Frank's superb pencils which gives the book a definitive look. All in all, Powers & Principalities continues one of the most impressive stories in the mainstream comic world available today. Pick up the first volume Contact and then pick this up, it's brilliant.

A world of insights and troubling questions.......2005-07-11
It is impossible to read this book without the perspective of 9/11 and the subsequent "war on terror". "Terrorists of Irustan" raises a slew of uncomfortable questions that have gained startling relevance in the last several years, many of which, unfortunately, have been stifled and deflected to the point we're encouraged not to think about them. For this reason, I think "Irustan" - which deals with Islam, women's rights, terrorism, and self-defense vs. pre-emptive action, among other things - has gained in depth and meaning since its original writing.
On the planet of Irustan, Muslim fundamentalists who follow the "Second Prophet" have created a society that's just to the right of the Taliban. One of the peculiarities of Irustani society is the focus on the mind and soul to the exclusion of the body, which means that medicine - with its fixation of disease and imperfection - is seen as a practice fit only for women. Zahra ibSada is a medicant who has had it up to here with patching up abused women and children and sending them back to the husbands and fathers who own them, so when a friend comes to her in desperation because her young daughter is about to be given to a man who has already killed two wives, Zahra steels herself to do the unthinkable.
At first, Zahra tries to limit her actions to self-defense, acting only to save the lives of her friends and their children. Soon, however, she realizes that simply reacting will not be enough. She must seek to outright change her society if the abuse is to stop, and that's when she moves into the tricky realm of terrorism. She starts choosing victims carefully, hoping to send a message, knowing all the while that each step could be her last.
Putting such a human face on terrorism is a bold move, and forces us to question the one-dimensional portrayal we usually accept. When you're absolutely powerless, when you live your life in virtual slavery, the "property" of another human being, what other choice do you have? Is it terrorism for a slave to harm her owner? To harm another slave's owner? How does a slave change the institution of slavery? What happens when terrorism is not only the only answer, but the right one?
As always, I am supremely impressed by Marley's abilities to craft complex, nuanced characters and to make us genuinely care for them. Her vision of Irustan makes it easy to understand the mixed feelings of so many characters; an alien world that is beautiful and harsh, traditional and unforgiving. This book is highly recommended reading for anyone who refuses to accept sound-bite explanations of the current situation in the Middle East or simplistic answers to the most difficult dilemmas facing us today.
well, what can i say.......2004-09-12
Well, what makes a great book? when i read this book, it made me wonder, it made me think, it made me really think... I absolutely positively loved it. it has history, it has depth, it has morals- heck, this is one great peice of literature
Wonderful!.......2004-06-18
"The Terrorists of Irustan" is a novel set in the future on a planet distant from Earth, but it has a rather timeless, almost present-day feel to it. Comparisons with the Middle East are hard to ignore.
Irustan is a planet where women have no rights whatsoever. The story interweaves the tales of two women: Zahra, a "medicant" (doctor), who lives on Irustan, and Jin-Li Chung, a woman from Earth who works on Irustan and who is masquerading as a man. When Zahra becomes sickened, frustrated, and horrified by the abuse she sees happening around her, she takes matters into her own hands.
Character development is excellent here, and the plot moves briskly along. At times this story is gut-wrenching and hard to take, but it's nevertheless a real page turner.
Powerful, and darkly realistic.......2003-07-02
I picked this up at the library on a whim and found I couldn't put it down. Other reviewers have covered the plot summary, so I won't elaborate on that. I will say that the powerful emotions evoked by the darkly realistic tale kept me awake and thinking. Midway through the book, the events play out somewhat predictably, but the focus of the book is, rightly, not so much about the plot as it is about making the reader think. A powerful story, it reminds one of how women have been treated throughout the ages, first as property and later, as lesser citizens until today, when such repression still occurs in parts of the world. Yet it's such a well-written book that I'd recommend it even to the non-feminists among us. It's a story of one woman, one character who fights against her world in order to change it. The author has fashioned a masterly portrayal of the protagonist that will be remembered by the reader long after the book has been put down.
Lines of reality and fantasy blur.......2002-10-24
This is a story you will not be able to put down, and certainly it will stay in your mind when you are not reading it. It is science fiction/fantasy that has multiple layers and can lead to some deep questions. The parallels to the Middle East cannot be avoided; but the story is so well crafted, that is not a distraction. Surprises emerge when you think you have the characters and plot figured out. And the characters are so well developed, you really get to understand them. I thought Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" and Walker's "Possessing the Secret of Joy" were the most wrenching books on the repression of women in parts of the world, but Marley is masterful in this book. I can highly recommend this novel and this author. Don't miss "The Glass Harmonica" as well.

THE BOOK IS GREAT, THE EDITION IS SHIT.......2007-07-04
I ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO WANTS TO READ THIS VERY GOOD BOOK TO PURCHASE ANOTHER EDITION. THE REASONS ARE THE FOLLOWING:
1) EVERYTHING THAT SHOULD BE IN ITALICS IS NOT, MAKING MANY PARTS OF THE BOOK HARD TO UNDERSTAND.
2) LONG CITATIONS ARE PACKED TOGETHER WITH THE PARAGRAPHS CONTRARY TO MLA FORMAT MAKING THE BOOK HARD TO READ. QUOTATIONS MARKS ARE AWKWARDLY DISPLAYED CAUSING FURTHER CONFUSION.
3) THERE ARE MISTAKES IN THE PRINT, LIKE PLACING A TITLE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ESSAY CONFUSING THE READER.
4) THE PRINT IS TOO BIG, IT MAKES THE BOOK TOO BULKY, THE PAGES ARE PROBABLY THE CHEAPEST AND WORST QUALITY AVAILABLE.
THIS IS THE WORST EDITION I EVER HAD OF ANY BOOK, IT IS SO BAD THAT I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE PUT OUT OF THE MARKET BECAUSE IT GIVES THE BOOK A BAD IMAGE.
AS TO THE BOOK ITSELF, I CHECKED THE SOURCES THEY ARE OK, I STUDIED THIS BOOK I DIDN'T SIMPLY READ IT. THE BOOK IS FINE AND PROPERLY WRITTEN, NO BLUFFS, THERE ARE MANY MORE BOOKS ON THIS SUBJECT, THIS BOOK IS SIMPLY A BRIEF INTRODUCTION.

The Truth Revealed!.......2005-09-05
A valuable chronicle depicting the politics that made Christianity the colossal force it is today. Definitely thought provoking.
Another Wheless Classic.......2005-08-26
Although it is abundantly clear that Joseph Wheless has no use for organized religion, what he has to say has merit. Wheless' detailed and intelligent research makes this book hard to ignore. Whether you are a devout Christian or an Atheist this book is thought provoking reading. Exceptional!
On the Biblical Usages of the Term .......2004-09-30
This is not a review of this book, per say, (so ignore the 1 star rating) but just a quick response to Geoff Puterbaugh's review comment on the Biblical usages of the term "elohim" :-
" 'Elohim' does NOT always mean "gods" (plural); the meaning of the term is to be determined by grammatical and contextual clues. GRAMMAR is IMPORTANT! Grammar is to language what your graphical internet browser is to the websites on the internet - it is the organizing vehicle that gives meaning to the data -bits of information; without it you'd have to create your own method of obtaining and understanding that information - it would be totally SELF STYLED. Grammar dictates the formation of words, the relationship of words to each other, and the meaning of those words with respect to that arrangement. Without attention to the rules of grammar that have governed the languages of ancient texts, you can make the texts say ANYTHING; grammar is a control against total subjectivity. Sitchin ignores grammar in his work on elohim in this passage (and others). The PDF files below illustrate (from the Hebrew) that "elohim" often refers to a "god" or "God" (proper name). Besides this evidence from the Hebrew Bible, I have also posted examples from ancient Mesopotamian texts (Akkadian) and the famous El-Amarna texts (also Akkadian) where the plural word for "gods" ('ilanu) refers to a single person or god - just as in the case of Hebrew elohim."
(...)
My point is simple: Any critique of the Biblical usages of the term 'elohim' that fails to take into account the 'grammatical' rules (or principles) of interpretation, (as indicated above by Michael S. Heiser, Ph.D.,) must ultimately be deemed as faulty.

Major topics range from early history, brewery company art, signs, trays, brewery beauties, statues, reverse glass, mugs, cans and more. It does not include every item available, but a good representative of each category. A beautiful deluxe library volume. Enjoy, enjoy.
Not the book for finding prices of cans or trays.......2000-04-23
Book has an extremely limited amount of content. Only the rarest trays are and signs are listed with prices. If your looking for prices for most of the trays you see this is not the book for you, also not a beer can price guide at all. If your expecting to look up Kruger, Ballentine, etc. companys trays to find prices, your not going to find it here.
Wonderful artifacts.......1998-02-12
Herb and Helen Haydock are the most successful collectors of American brewing artifacts ever to engage in the hobby. Over several decades, they have amassed (and have now donated to Miller Brewing Co. for safekeeping and display) an astounding array of breweriana including cans, trays, back bar breweriana, paper goods, giveaways, etc. Many of these rare and unique items are displayed beautifully in this book, which features finely detailed color and black and white photographs of items in their collection. The book concentrates on full size trays, but does hit on all areas of the brewery collecting hobby. Of note is the Haydocks' specialized interest in the old Potosi brewery. The only criticism I have relates to the estimated pricing of the artifacts - based on my own experience, I would argue that the prices here are at least 30% lower than you would actually pay to acquire the item, and in several cases less than half of what you could reasonably expect to fork over. Aside from that, this is a wonderful trip through time at some items that most of us will only be able to see in this book.
Book Description
A comprehensive design source book of all types of Celtic illuminated letters by leading exponent of Celtic art, Courtney Davis.
The 101 illuminated letters reflects the history of Celtic design from the earliest examples to Courtney Davis's own celebrated modern interpretations. Many of the illuminated letters are from, or inspired by, the famous Celtic manuscripts such as the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells.
The 101 designs are all hand painted by Courtney Davis and printed in full color. Each is accompanied by a black and white version of the same image on the adjacent page--perfect for scanning or photocopying for use on an art, design or craft project. The book contains two complete alphabets and the remaining letters are structured so that those most commonly used at the beginning of words are represented with many more examples than the least common letters. The introduction gives a brief history of the Celts and an explanation of the birth and development of their artistic style with particular relation to illuminated letter designs.

101Celtic Illuminated Letters.......2007-02-13
Mr. Davis is my favorite author of books on Celtic Design. He is a master of it and besides the designs he has a mind like a color wheel. He is truly talented.
Useful and beautiful.......2005-08-12
"Courtney Davis ....Offers Celtic Art as displays of richness and colour, intricacy and symbolism to equal the world's finest styles" (quoted from "Arts & Crafts Magazine").
I picked up this book of illuminated letters at a museum in Dublin, and if you are interested in Celtic art, both old and new, be sure to check out the artist's web site at awenpress.com. Courtney Davis has published over 50 books on Celtic art, including coloring books and books of Viking and Celtic tattoos.
"101 Celtic Illuminated Letters" is a source book of decorated initials from some of the most celebrated thousand-year-old Celtic manuscripts, including the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels.
After a brief introduction, the letters are arranged one to a page, the black-and-white version facing its counterpart colored by Courtney Davis. The letters average around 3.5 to 4 inches high, and are very easy to size up or down using a grid (not supplied).
Beauty is combined with humor in the letters of the Celtic Dog Alphabet, and there are also birds and human faces worked into some of the illuminated letters. This is a lovely and useful source book for anyone who is interested in Celtic knot-work, embroidery, or calligraphy.

Exceptional Resource.......2005-09-28
This book is excellent. I bought it several years ago for myself, and my children call constantly to ask me to look up solutions for their household challenges. I decided to buy three copies---one for each of our adult children. They, like we, will find great hints and tips to make their lives easier.
An excellent reference for efficient living.
Outdated.......2002-10-02
This book contains some rather outdated concepts. Such as advising you to store garlic in oil. This has long been warned as dangerous due to potentital food poisoning, yet the book does not include any caution about this practice. The book also tells you to extract egg whites from passing the egg from one shell to another, which again is not an adviseable method (I checked my Better Homes & Gardens book and Cook's Illustrated).
The index of this book is wrong a lot of the times.
For True Beginners.......2002-01-25
I don't consider myself a home expert but may reconsider after reading this book. There was very little that was new to me and much of it was common sense. When I did come across something new, (home repairs for example) there wasn't enough detailed information. I needed to consult other resources. I think the book tries to be everything to everyone. I much prefer Hints from Heloise, Decorating for Dummies and, the Readers Digest repair books.
Stupid........2002-01-12
...If you like cutesy decorating ideas, you might like this book. If you're looking for practical household tips, there's nothing beyond the obvious and some tips are very impractical. For example, they advise you to keep candles in the refrigerator so you can find them easily in a power outage. I don't know about you, but in a power outage, the last thing I want to do is open the refrigerator and spoil my food. The book tries to cover everything under the sun and, as a result, isn't really good for anything.
Oops.......2000-08-02
I just realized that the Cassandra Kent book that I reviewed was the OLD version of Hints and Tips (copyright 1996). I thought I had the "10,001" version (the covers are identical) but it turns out I had the older version of the book. There seem to be many more chapters in the new version (such as Decorating and Gardening, which are not in the previous version). I wish I had seen the new version, which looks great, but I don't recall seeing it at the bookstore. I only bought this book a month ago, but I'm truly satisfied with the version I have. It's a lovely book and I still recommend the old version if you want to save a few dollars.

Book Description
Designers make color choices that affect both the meaning and impact of their logo designs every day. They have to ask themselves: Is orange too forceful? Does red give the wrong impression? Will purple convey the right message? Questions like these can be put to rest with this ingenious, tell-all-about-color book. While many books address logo design in general, this is the only one that examines the psychology and use of color in terms of how it affects a design, and how that design affects a viewer. By exposing the underlying meaning of each hue, this book ensures that designers never again second-guess their color choices.
