Book Description
Made into a major motion picture that garnered an Oscar nomination, Diary of a Mad Housewife is a classic of women’s fiction that gave a wry voice to the nascent feminist stirrings of the 1960s and helped incite a revolution in the consciousness of a generation. After many years, this best-selling novel of Manhattan ennui is finally back in print.
When Bettina Balser begins to suspect that she is going mad, she starts a secret diary as a form of therapy and escape. Her fears pour onto the page: “Elevators, subways, bridges, tunnels, high places, low places, tightly enclosed spaces, boats, cars, planes, trains, crowds....” Through her observations of herself and those around her, Bettina seeks meaning in her exceedingly dreary life. Her frank examinations lead to many changes, including an extramarital fling, and her voice touches a timeless nerve, resonating on many levels— from the ever-evolving feminist consciousness to the gnawing existential search that is universal.
Diary of a Mad Housewife’s humor and insight are as alive and pertinent today as they were yesterday, and will charm and disarm men and women of any generation.

Amazingly good.......2007-09-26
I bought this book because I was attracted by its title, but I was a little bit afraid it would turn out a heavy feminist type of book. It was a pleasant surprise instead. The main character, Bettina,is well characterised and with all the problems that anybody, any woman sooner or later in her life might experience. But it's not just about identification. The style is dazzling, and it flows impeccably right to the end of the novel as if you were drinking fresh water, full of irony and witticism, with no flaws or standstills. I will suggest this reading to any one of my friends!
ME, MYSELF, AND I..........2007-09-12
I recently saw this on my bookshelf and decided to read it again after a hiatus of many years. Well, time has not diminished the power of this book to engage the reader. Humorous and thought provoking, it allows the reader a glimpse into the mind of Bettina Balser, an upper middle class woman, living in Manhattan somewhere in the late nineteen sixties, who feels that she is losing her mind. Consequently, she begins to keep a diary, because she finds it cathartic. Through her diary, the reader sees a dawning awareness of self, a self that she has long repressed.
Bettina married her husband Jonathan, when he was an idealistic up and coming Assistant District Attorney. When his political aspirations did not bear fruit, he left public service and became an insufferable, materialistic, social climbing corporate attorney. He is also a total control freak, planning every aspect of their lives and disparaging his wife at every opportunity. The sad thing is that he is totally unaware of what he is doing to his wife, so self-absorbed is he. They have two equally insufferable little girls, who seem to emulate their father at every turn. It is no wonder that Bettina feels that she is sinking into an abyss. It is as if she were a displaced person with no place to go, no place to run, no place to hide. Where has her self gone?
The author takes the reader into the inner workings of Bettina's mind. The reader sees how she copes with her struggle to find the woman within the shell she has become. In its time, this book was viewed as being feminist in nature. What else would one call it, when the book is clearly about a woman's struggle with the hand that fate has dealt her simply by virtue of her gender? Although some of the references seem a little dated, such as the cost of certain things or the fact that everyone seemed to smoke cigarettes, it is simply reflective of its time and quite fitting. Full of humor, wit, and discreet social commentary, this is a book that has become a modern day classic.
Classic.......2007-03-02
It's a classic for a reason, folks. Extremely amusing and spot-on accurate. A very humorous account of the universal quest for meaning that has surely depressed the mess out of us all at some point or other. Style so good you forget to be jealous and just enjoy.
A short review is not an insult. I strongly suggest that you find out about this book from one of those professional reviewer sorts. If you do that, you'll buy it. Alternately, just check your local library, get it if they have it, and prepare to get sucked right into reading this as quickly as you possibly can because it's just that damn good.
I wont have that husband!!.......2006-09-26
This is a fabu book...all young women can learn from this book...this is the man NOT to marry...
Sad and the City.......2006-08-18
This is the story of Bettina "Tina" Balser: her husband is convinced she's losing her mind and needs help, her daughters are growing older and surly, her affair with an arrogant, foul-mouthed playwright is hardly the redemptive experience she needs, so she starts to keep a diary, which she keeps hidden from everyone and records her feelings so that she can feel some sort of connection. Sue Kaufman's novel (which spawned a movie that, at this writing, is frustratingly unavailable on home video) written at the cusp of the emerging women's movement of the late sixties feels just as fresh and important to this contemporary reader as it must have when it was originally published.
Despite the situation of Tina feeling trapped in her marriage and in her life, Kaufman does a nifty case of gender reversal in this book. For a change, it is the husband who "roosterpecks" his spouse mercilessly, is vain and materialistic, is a social climber of embarrassingly blatant proportions -- who wouldn't feel nuts with a husband like Jonathan Balser? By making Jonathan the way he is, Kaufman calls into question the entire concept of women and inborne madness. Are women really prone to hysteria, or are there also outside factors than can cause a woman to go mad? Also, what was once called madness can now be called "depression" but "Diary of a Depressed Housewife" doesn't have the same zing.
Some people may shy away from this book if they hear it's a feminist novel, but that's assigning a very narrow definition to the term "feminist." I would agree with anybody who labels this a "feminist novel" and would wholeheartedly approve of it being put on any curriculum, whether women's studies or just a general survey course. It's a complementary work to novels such as "The Women's Room" and, more importantly, "The Yellow Wallpaper." I would also say that this book is the urban sister of Richard Yates' "Revolutionary Road" and a cousin of, yes, I'm saying it, "Valley of the Dolls." Like all these books, "Diary of a Mad Housewife" is funny, sad, always sharp, never didactic, and most of all, inspiring.

A good comic gets better.......2007-09-06
Mitchell Hundred continues his third career: engineer, unwilling superhero, and now willing but inept mayor of NYC. Well, if you want something done strangely, count on an engineer. They're generally so honest that there's no way to guess what they'll do next - something logical, usually, and that always takes everyone by surprise.
This fictional world moves through the year or so after the 9/11 attacks on NYC and DC. In that world, though, Hundred managed to save one of the towers. And now, as mayor, he has the privelege presiding over the wedding of one of those heroic first responders, Todd Wylie, and his boyfriend. While that ruckus gets up to full volume, something quieter and more deadly is taking shape under the city ...
Vaughn and crew give a lot to like. The story is current and topical, but distant enough for escapist fiction. Vaughn's artwork carries the book - it's skilled and expressive, it has some of Chaykin's monumental quality, but with livelier and more natural poses. Continuing that "more natural" theme. Vaughn isn't afraid of ladies with shoulders, hips, and curves, or of the occasional goofy look on someone's face. The lines are gentler and the palette more subdued than Chaykin, too - but there's nothing imitative in the visual style.
I alrady have the next collection of Ex Machina on my to-read heap, and I expect more to follow it. It got that Eisner award for a reason - if you've read this far and haven't tried this title yet, you probably should.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Mitchell, now Mayor Hundred, still has the superhuman abilities gained from a strange accident. He no longer operates as The Great Machine, but something from he past may have triggered a serial killer that is now operating.
Taking some unpopular political stances, a good looking writer goes out with him, and will offer some advice and perhaps more.
Sci-Fi Politics.......2007-05-10
This second installment in the Ex Machina series explains how the main character got his powers and became mayor.
Ex Machina's story really takes off.......2007-02-25
'Tag' the second volume in the Ex Machina really takes off. Not only do we get a better understanding of Mitchell Hundred's powers and how he came to be Mayor but we get an outstanding thriller. Deaths are being linked throughout the city to a symbol that has some link to Mitchell's origin and he has to figure things out fast to save lives.
Meanwhile, Mitchell also has to deal with the day to day politics of New York and the hot button issue he sparks when he agrees to marry a gay firefighter and his lover. An excellent second volume really moves the series into high gear and we get a taste of how this might evolve into one of te best comic book series of all time.
Vaughan's Political Sci-Fi Continues To Impress.......2006-05-20
In the next five issues of Ex Machina, Brian K. Vaughan's story of a superhero-turned-mayor of New York City, Mitchell Hundred's administration has to contend with more hotbed political issues as well as some "unnatural" occurreneces that are connected to the device that gave Hundred his powers.
After a brief, and fairly unsuccessful, stint as the superhero The Great Machine, Hundred hung up his tights and jetpack and became New York City's mayor. A strange device gave him the ability to "communicate" with machines, but while he tries to put that life behind him in his new political career, Hundred can't seem to get away from his old life.
Hundred's political career is put in jeopardy when he decides to not only endorse, but perform a gay marriage between the brother of his Deputy Mayor and his conservative boyfriend. If that weren't enough, a mysterious symbol that was found on the device that gave Hundred his powers has been showing up throughout the city, and it is having dire effects on people who stare at it for too long. Along the way, we see flashbacks of Hundred's life during his campaign and we see his history with the NSA.
While the explanation for events at the end was a little confusing, this is still a solid collection. Vaughan can't seem to go wrong as there is nothing by him that I've read that I haven't liked. Runaways, Y: The Last Man, Ultimate X-Men, and this have all been great reads.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This is one novelisation I did enjoy quite a bit and read more than once. Kotzwinkle did a reasonable job of somehow taking the amazingly ugly but cute at the same time alien and translating that to print, along with the kids.
The D&D scene he threw into the book was fun, as well.
Book from the movie, but better than the movie.......2007-06-01
This book was written from the movie, but I read it in Junior-High well before I saw the movie. What is awesome in this book is that it gives E.T.'s POINT OF VIEW on the whole story. We learn who he really is, why he is here, what he thinks, what he feels, why he does what he does... and to me that was just extremely interesting, to be inside the head of an extra-terrestrial!
Afterwards, seeing the movie was a big disappointment, because it contains none of these deep character developments... I think reading this book truly adds another dimension to the E.T. story, so I recommend it. (But beware: some of the concepts strayed from the movie, so be open to new ideas! For example, in the book, E.T. is not an ignorant baby, but is million-years-old wise).
Okay,but a bit pretentious........2007-03-08
I seem to be different than everyone else.I always seem to like the movie better than the book, unless the writer is skilled and doesn't overexplain or do anything else uneccesary.I thought E.T. was way too cynical and they went off on a tangent with Mary's emotional issues with her husband leaving.Kotzwinkle could have used a better editor...Hell,it'd be better if he didn't write it.I love when a book goes into detail about some things, but it was just too much.I was thinking the whole time,"I get the damn point.I got the damn point when I saw the movie, but the movie didn't go on and on with it."
Also, where is the friendship between E.T. and Elliot?E.T. just seemed cold.He reminded me of these teen to 20 somethings that have just discovered Schopenhauer or some other arrogant philosopher. To put it simply,he seemed like an unlikable know-it-all.
Mr. Kotzwinkle,if you happen to ever read this review,I suggest you read Stephen King's "On Writing" memoir.I know Stephen King has some real bad ideas for stories sometimes, but at least he knows how to write them well.He has some real good tips.
I only say it was okay because I got it from a bargain bin type place and it was short...and I've read worse.
ET Phone Home.......2006-12-15
This book is a scary book. I want people to read it because it is kind of sad. The best part of this story is the fact that the scary thing gets killed. People should read it to find out how this happened. Reading scary books is something I like to do. Buy this book to read and get some information.
ET.......1998-10-19
This book was outstanding in my own mind. There was just not anything that turned me off and made put the book down. Yes, this is science fiction and actually loved it, because the characters were described so well. A person may feel as if they really knew or felt that they may be somewhat alike. I personally do not like science fiction but as much as I enjoyed this, I may just change and widen my reading variety. Considering some fairly difficult words I always stuck with and just tried to understand it. Kotzwinkle has put forth an extraudinary piece of literature and should be recommended for interested readers. To be honest with you this book is not easy and is a little long but in the end I promise that you will be feeling something. This has love, tragedy, and is quite suspensful. It is a wonderful book, and I personally recommend to everyone. joe gainer
Book Description
An unusual and rewarding exploration of the Gospel of John from an Indian perspective, offering a meditation on our need to draw inspiration from all spiritual sources as we search for the paths toward personal transformation * Eloquently and convincingly reveals the interconnectedness of all * faiths and the growing need in today's world for interfaith dialogue The Gospel of John differs from the other gospels of the New Testament in both its cosmological scale and mystical nature. Through thoughtful comparisons of its teachings with Hindu and other religious traditions, Christ the Yogi eloquently and convincingly reveals the interconnectedness of all faiths and the growing need in today's world for interfaith dialogue. For those concerned with the emergence of a universal spirituality, Christ the Yogi is a source of light, a translucent pool of wisdom that offers from its depths an immense and lasting spiritual vision.

A wonderful analysis of the book of John.......2001-08-30
This book is excellent, but the title is a bit misleading. Let us start by saying that you can't go wrong reading this book. It is a detailed analysis of the book of John, from the New Testament. I must admit that much of the author's commentary brought up ideas I had never considered, or not seen the same way. It will add depth and understanding for anyone trying to understand the mystical style of the book of John.
The reason I only gave this book 4 out of 5 stars is that the title suggests a more detailed treatment, and bonding between the Eastern traditions of Hinduism and yoga, and Christ. Little of the Eastern traditions are mentioned, but those that are mentioned are excellent reflections. I was hungry for a treatment of Christ philosophy from an Hindu Yoga point of view. It was much more geared for the biblical reader, than for the Hindu reader. A little more balance would have been my preference.
Still, a wonderful book to read!
An exploration of Jesus' teachings by a native of India.......2000-07-04
In this book Ravi Ravindra goes through the gospel of John section by section, following each part with commentary. I found his insights very valuable; although I had read John's gospel many times before, Ravindra's reading of it pointed out many insights I would never had caught on my own. I suspect this may be because the author approached the gospel with a "beginner's mind," which is often difficult for those of us raised in a Judaeo-Christian culture. His perspectives on the story of the Samaritan woman at the well were so profound that they pushed my understanding of Jesus' teachings to a new level. As a person who has given up on organized religion, this book was valuable in helping me to go back to what is of value in Christian teachings and draw on it. Ravindra combines his understanding of the Hindu approach to the spiritual path with Christian mysticism in this book. Rather than watering down either tradition, the approach is truly inspiring.
An exploration of the spiritual wisdom of John's Gospel.......1999-05-12
1. "For the first time, a systematic study of the Gospel according to St. John is made by a non-Christian. Dr. Ravindra explores John's twenty-one chapters, one by one, with beautiful and incisive style... Ravindra's commentary is not an intellectual exercise but a heart pilgrimage. He warns us that the 'rational mind is always uneasy about the Spirit which displaces it from the centre of being...' The author shares with us his spiritual journey, using John's Gospel as the structure for his development. The basis of personal experience of the spirit within us is reminiscent of Pascal's Pensees, and, closer to us, Thomas Merton's reflections on Zen Buddhism... Stemming from this are larger, more universal truths; on an otherwise too-familiar text he brings us countless insights, which can only be gained from such a fresh perspective. Throughout the book these nuggets startle and delight... The Yoga of the Christ will be for many readers such a source of light, as the best insights of the Hindu tradition are integrated to better reveal the dynamic elasticity and immense spiritual wealth of John's Gospel." --From The Atlantic Provinces Book Revie

A great cookbook.......2003-10-05
I picked this up while visiting Colorado and it quickly became a staple in my kitchen. I refer to it often. There are many many recipes and every one of them has turned out great.
Most of the recipes require only typical ingredients that a cook will have on hand. Although there is a chapter for cooking game such as elk, duck and goose. Every recipe I have tried was easy to make, the directions were clear, and the results great.
There are also little tidbits of history, and colorado trivia included. A fun read.
I particularly like the Wynona Granola recipe. There are some fantastic chicken recipes and creative breakfast ideas.
Enjoy.
Always at my Fingertips in the Kitchen!.......2001-06-08
This cookbook will be the one you grab everytime! I love the Bow-Tie Chicken dish - plus you will always find an entertaining tid-bit of information about Colorado in the sidelines. Recipes are easy to read and understand, and unlike most cookbooks, the recipes in this cookbook call for items that are commonplace, so you won't be spending hours searching the aisles at the grocery store. The Restaurant Recipes section has recipes from local restaurants in the Steamboat area that are wonderful. Worth every dollar you spend for the cookbook.
Steamboat Entertains Cookbook.......2000-09-19
I really like this cookbook because it has recipes where you can combine certain parts of the recipe, store it and add the remaining ingredients later. For instance, there's the Moon Hill muffin mix. For this recipe, you mix the dry ingredients together, store it for when you need to make muffins in a hurry, then add the wet ingredients. It also has ideas/suggestions for different variations on the recipe.
Also, if you are a native or live in Colorado, you may be interested in the bits and pieces of history associated with the names of the recipe. There is a caption about Mr. Moon next to the Moon Hill Muffin Mix recipe, for example.

Read details before you buy.......2005-09-27
I found this book very disappointing. I failed to read the description before I purchased this book. I didn't realize it was only 18 pages for $7.50. IN my opinion it is not worth that amount of money. Especially when you add 3.99 for S&H.
And to me, the designs were not that great.
"Deck the halls...".......2001-04-03
Susan Allen did it again! Just when I thought I had found the end of the rainbow with her first book of crocheted Christmas ornament covers, she produced another book filled with new designs to cover Christmas balls. Like her first book, this one features festive photos of the finished ornaments and very easy to follow instructions to reproduce the ornaments for yourself. Her innovative method for covering the ornaments makes it easy to create lots of new Christmas decorations in no time.
This book is is a portable size ready to slip into your craft bag to take with you anywhere. You'll be ready to sneak in a few more crochet stitches wherever you go. The compliments I receive on the finished ornaments keeps me crocheting more! You'll find this book to be a wonderful addition to your collection.

Living in Style Without Losing Your Mind isn't the usual tips-and-tricks guide to decorating your home. Author Marco Pasanella attempts the nearly impossible: to define style in order to help homeowners understand the difference between the stylish and the merely trendy. It's a Herculean task, but Pasanella's approach is truer to the real meaning of style than that of many other interior design books.
Pasanella eschews gimmicky style tips and doesn't believe everyone should adhere to one mode of decorating. "Style is important. A style is not." Instead, he urges homeowners to look to room functions as guides to decorating. Because spaces in the home are generally used for gathering (e.g., the living room or kitchen) or retreat (such as a bedroom or bathroom), Pasanella holds that homeowners should design a space with its underlying use or dynamic in mind to help them make wise choices. Above all, rooms must be comfortable and reflect their inhabitants. "True individuality comes from honesty, not 'creativity,'" says Pasanella.
He addresses some common design mistakes--for example, falling on the wrong side of the fine line between simple and spartan or cozy and cluttered, as well as the faux pas of making everything match or trying to be cool. He discusses options for home offices and computers, relevant but routinely ignored topics in other design books. Pasanella's abstractions on style can be somewhat vague or overly didactic themselves ("To be really stylish, you need a touch of bad taste"). But overall, he does an admirable job of defining a nebulous concept and giving homeowners the confidence and skills to trust themselves when decorating their homes. --Kris Law
Book Description
Flip through the pages of any design publication and you can't help but wonder: So beautiful, so spacious, so perfect...but is anyone actually living there?
We may want our houses to look like magazine spreads, but to do that can require a mountain of money and a staff of hundreds, the dexterity of Michelangelo, and a backhoe. Most of the time, great design has to be accessible to the rest of us. By deÃnition it has to be easy and affordable, smart and stylish. But as the brilliant designer and writer Marco Pasanella shows us, you don't have to have a "look"; rather, great design can be found in many styles and in any house. For your place to look great, he says, you don't need a platinum card or a flair for fabrics. You don't need a degree and you don't need to know how to draw. You only need to know how to see, and that's where this fresh and exciting book comes in.
Pasanella has the insight of a practicing designer and teacher, which he combines with an iconoclastic and firmly practical attitude; the result is a book that will speak to a generation impatient with frivolous, unimaginative, and pompous design solutions. If you don't have a separate wing for each family member, how can you create private spaces that provide retreat even as they allow for communal use? How do you know what to toss, what to keep, what to get? How do you turn a house into a home? These questions have answers that can make our lives easier and a lot better looking.
Living in Style Without Losing Your Mind doesn't tell us what to do; it helps us understand what we're doing and encourages us to trust our own ideas about great style. Pasanella gives us the confidence to trust our own passions and our own taste. But this isn't just a manual of practical advice. Our author is a wonderful designer himself, with a marvelous eye, and the book is filled with quirky, inspiring, and just plain beautiful photos showing what our rooms can look like with only a little thought, a little effort, and a great teacher.
Customer Reviews:
Among the best of its kind.......2005-03-26
Mario Pasanella's book embodies what it promotes: honesty, individuality, true style. It is not only a beautiful object in itself, but also utterly useful, appealingly personal, and unexpectedly clever and wise. "Unexpectedly" because so few designers are also as skilled at expressing important design principles in such pithy, engaging language. LIVING IN STYLE is really a cut above the formulaic books churned out by Taunton (which, let's be honest, are largely picture books). This book can be considered as a bridge between those popularly oriented products and the true classics of architecture and design. Pasanella frequently cites not only Christopher Alexander's A PATTERN LANGUAGE, but also Strunk & White's incomparable ELEMENTS OF STYLE. That Pasanella knows, loves, and promotes the principles of these enduring titles demonstrates to me that he's coming from a good place. I have only one disappointment regarding this book: that it is not the top seller in its category. It should be.
Living in Style Without Losing your Mind.......2002-05-10
This book simplifies stylish interior designing with the reader's needs in mind. This is not your usual coffee table book on interior decoration. High on content and low on flashy (and usually inapplicable to real-life decorating) photos, it is the kind of reading material that you can grab when you need to get quick and useful ideas on elements of interior design such as space, lighting, furniture arrangement, and the like. The author's witty and straightforward writing style makes it a pleasure to read. Finally, the book does not impose its style on you - rather, it uncovers basic principles behind the various elements of interior decoration for you to actually apply depending on your needs, budget, and style.
Common Sense.......2002-01-13
This book gives you confidence to follow your own style and common sense.
Fun but more like an article than a book.......2001-09-28
This is a fun little book, but it's more like a magazine article than a book. You can read it in an hour or two. Don't buy it -- just get it from the library or read it at the bookstore instead.
How to think about decorating.......2001-08-06
One of the few decorating books you will read cover to cover -- instead of just looking at the photos. This book attempts to open your mind to the possibilities of decorating your space in your own personal way, and proceeds in a simple, humorous, conversational style. While I wish it offered even more in terms of practical suggestions (although the section on how to buy a sofa is great) it makes its case without the usual, overwhelmingly lavish and overstyled photographs of unattainable splendor that fill most decorating books. It poses a philosophy of decorating and offers some interesting and useful ideas -- as well as a few pithy design rules that are worth taking to heart.

The official book is a must for the true B*Witched fan ,such as myself. The book provides a delightfully fun yet informative insight about the girls, by the girls. The book doesn't take on the form of a stuffy autobiography, but rather takes on a fun narration of the story of the best group around. Simply said, a great book.
