Book Description
Written by the acclaimed author of My Happy Life and George Bush, Dark Prince of Love, Everyone's Pretty is a savagely funny novel about the search for God, sex, and significance.
When he's not drinking himself into a stupor, stealing credit cards to pay for sex, or plotting his fame with a horny midget, Los Angeles pornographer Dean Decetes entertains messianic delusions and freeloads wantonly from his spinster sister. Distancing herself from her deadbeat sibling, Bucella obsesses over the quasi-religious love notes she writes to her boss and reassures a coterie of codependent coworkers, including a hygiene-phobic Christian Scientist and a depressive blonde bombshell named Alice. Next door, a teenage math genius has endured humiliation at the hands of her mother and is running away from home. She hightails it to a local dive and hooks up with Dean's editor from the porno magazine.
Told from five hilariously bizarre points of view, this novel serves up a fabulously florid cast of characters, many inspired by author Lydia Millet's two-year stint working at Larry Flynt Publications.

I'd Give It 4.5 Stars If I Could!.......2006-09-08
What a fantastic little book! Not only is it a very funny read, but the characters are so richly drawn that they'll stay with you for quite a while. A couple of weeks after reading the book, I still find myself contemplating who should play each character if it is ever made into a movie. Now I know that it's doubtful that this "under the radar" gem would ever make it to the silver screen, but I couldn't help imagining either Phillip Seymour Hoffman or Jack Black as the vulgar, yet magnetic personality of Dean Descetes. Give this book a try, I guarantee that you'll be quickly passing it along to your friends as a "must" read.
Sex-Kitten.net Review: .......2005-06-27
Rumored to be inspired by author Lydia Millet's two-year stint working as a copy editor at Hustler Magazine, `Everybody's Pretty' centers around the world of freelance porn reviewer Dean Decetes. While that may grab your attention, what keeps it is Dean's delusional status.
Told from the point of view of 5 characters (Dean, Bucella, Phillip, Ginny & Alice), all the characters weave in & out of each other's lives in a strange dance, searching for the meaning of life. Well, if not the meaning of life, searching for something more significant than what they have. Well, if you don't buy that metaphoric crap, then this is a search for God & sex.
God & sex are pitted against each other, mistaken for each other, and viewed as means to one another. Some obsess on God's ways, while some abstain from God's ways. Some abstain from sex, some are reborn in sex. Some abstain from God & sex. Some believe the are The Savior because of sex. Some believe in math as The Savior, but have diaphragms anyway.
The author has created the truly bizarre, but it's all plausible. It's epic & fantastic, yet each character is so rooted in some clinical state that you suddenly feel that it's all too real. It's sharp & biting, cruel when necessary, and while this certainly exposes the soft underbellies of the people, they retain if not dignity (and I must say, there may be indignant characters, there isn't much dignity!), some sense of respect or warmth, for Millet never goes in for the kill. Well, technically, since there is death, she does kill, but, oh what the hell -- this book is full of contradictions, humor & irony. Above all it's absolutely captivating.
I picked it up, read it almost in one day -- and I was pissed when I had to stop. 'Everone's Pretty' is fast & furious reading that nearly hypnotizes.
This is Lydia Millet's third book If it was inspired by her work at Larry Flynt Publications, I say give her a new job every 6 months, & let her write some more!

Dreams can often seem real, but waking up usually ends the illusion. From blurred images that hunt her mind, Roshelle pulls from her dreams the very definite presence of a dream specter. But Roshelle isn't a coward and won't be scared of a dream. She welcomes him so she can look her monster in the face. Only instead of a beast, she finds her soulmate. Jared Campbell's mind is trained to sharp perfection. He's careful to touch the mind, but not the memory, until Roshelle-she remembers him. As much as Jared's life doesn't allow for his growing interest, his emotions just won't heed the warning. Roshelle is addictive and he wants more than just a taste. The dream specter and the dreamer meet on a collision course to danger-physically and of the heart.

Another in the Dream Series.......2005-06-07
When Jared Campbell finds Roshelle Everitt on his mountain he's immediately distrustful of her. Sure that she's there as a threat to his family. As physics who are used by the government they are always watchful for threats. He quickly takes her to his home where he forces her to stay until he can figure out exactly who she is. He never expects the sudden connection that he has with her. Before long he realizes that their connection is far more than just physical and that she is the woman for him. Now he has to protect her from an enemy that is determined to use her and their unborn child for his own purposes.
After reading Mary Wine's first book, Dream Shadow, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to read Dream Specter as soon as it came out. As soon as I got it and immediately began reading and wasn't able to put it down until the end. Jared and Roshelle are both well developed characters who draw you in. Mary Wine doesn't forget the characters who were introduced in Dream Shadow and it is a welcome treat to see them again. There are many wonderful ebook authors but with Dream Shadow, Mary Wine proves that she's on the top of the list. Any book with her name on it is an auto-buy for me!

Book Description
Space was the last frontier for the human race, but was it? The crew of the USC Avenger is about to have that question answered. While the Avenger is out on a routine vacation tour of the fabled Marson prison, they come across an unidentifiable ship floating in space, having been attacked by a savage race of alien beings. The rescue team finds only three people out of the entire crew survived. Janus, one of the survivors, belongs to an alien race that the humans have never before come across. She keeps her own past and origins shrouded in mystery, though with the display of her own strange powers, it becomes obvious that Janus is a truly powerful but largely unknown element. After coming under attack by the very beings they had rescued Janus from, the Avenger is catapulted across the universe and into a galactic war that the humans are totally unprepared for. More than the outcome of the war weighs on the minds of all those involved. Would the Avenger ever get home? Would they even survive to try and return to Earth? Personal revelations, even historical revelations, ensue as everyone inevitably forms relationships, friendships destined to last. And perhaps more. Perhaps love.

Stand-Out Read.......2006-01-30
SB Zarben opens Amicus Humani Generis with a thrilling intergalactic fight that includes aliens, rescue attempts and the formation of an alliance between a friendly group of aliens and humans.
On its face the story may seem like another sci-fi book, but there is nothing typical about Amicus Humani Generis. The humans on the ship Avenger need to escape the Ebokras, creatures who are threatening their very existence with a deadly, rapidly spreading virus that must be contained. They cannot conquer the pervasive threat without the reluctant help of nonhuman allies. This is where Zarben introduces Janus, a character that embodies the true definition of a heroine.
Zarben envisions a world where strength, courage, and goodness are not only human traits. With her character Janus, we witness an energy force that is used to heal people even at the expense of her own well-being. She exhibits kindness, beauty, and nobility that eventually melt even the hardened hearts of the most extreme human supremacists. As the story unfolds, the reader is presented with the prejudice that the humans on the Avenger have for Janus because she is unlike them. Most question her motives, but not Ensign Connie Barker who is attracted to this compelling alien. The connection draws Janus to this brave human, and they both discover feelings that are unfamiliar.
Zarben effectively imagines a world where we can visualize it and the creatures that inhabit it because her descriptions are vibrant. Our hearts beat faster as the war rages between the outside forces trying to destroy the Avenger and its occupants. But the crux of this multi-layered plot is how Zarben exposes the way we treat those who are different from ourselves. Zarben uses the age-old issue of acceptance of one another's differences to craft a heartwarming and persuasive love story. She tackles the unfairness of preconceptions subtly without moralizing.
Zarben succeeds in dealing with a very difficult subject in a unique way without demeaning the reader, and this is the heart of what makes Amicus Humani Generis a stand-out read.

Darrell Waltrip- One On One.......2006-02-05
Having read several of Jay Carty's books now I have to say he is an incredibly inspiring writer and person to say the least. I am so excited each month as I check for new "stuff" from Jay Carty as it is always refreshing and different yet always connected to God with a three stranded cord. If you haven't been a reader of his books for long there are many to choose from and this writer never stops searching for Gods will in his daily efforts to continue to provide hearty reading material for all groups and all stages from salvation, and growth to a mature level of one's spiritual walk. I highly recommend anything he puts his hands on because I know the hand of God is on him. Some of what I have read and or listened to on tape are:"Discovering your natural talents", "Counter Attack: taking back ground lost to sin", "Playing with fire", "Something's fishy Getting rid of the carp in your life","Coach Wooden One on One", "Coach Wooden's Piramid of success", Darrell Waltrip - One on One, "Mike Singletary- One on One" all keeping me captivated from cover to cover!

Way to go Jay another outstanding book!!!!

Two winners team up in this book for God........2005-11-30
DW and Jay Carty make a great team in this super devotional.
A unique and inspiring book of devotionals.......2004-12-13
As an Author, Coach, and Motivational Speaker I read alot of books about people, their motivations, and their relationships. Darrell Waltrip One-on-One is a straightforward statement of faith and inspiration by a NASCAR Champion working with his co-author, Jay Carty, a former NBA player and traveling preacher.
One-on-One consists of 60 daily devotionals. Each devotional starts with a life lesson by Waltrip and ends with a personal or biblical support by preacher Carty. Scripture readings are included for each day.
The stories are informative, educational, and inspiring.
- There's Darrell learning a lesson about foolish decisions that cost him a race, a car, and time in the hospital.
- Waltrip's common bond with his "frienemy" Dale Earnhardt, scripture verses written on duct tape provided by Darrell's wife Stevie before each race.
- The miracle healing of Darrell's arm after a wreck in 1990.
- The value of keeping focused on the big picture to win at racing and in life.
With each Waltrip story there's a story by Carty that serves to clarify, explain, and educate about the topic of the devotional.
If you're looking for an inspiring, motivating, and faith filled book written from a unique perspective then I recommend you buy a copy of Darrell Waltrip One-on-One: The faith that took him to the finish line.

One cannot absorb this book in one reading. There is just too much to see and learn. The writer speaks in English English, so an American must change mental gears with a few of her terms(Adds a little spice!)Knowing the existing conditions when a new development in design or materials began helps to set the scene in your mind. While there are many illustrations, there are not as many as in other quality books - but this book's strong point is in the history of the times and of the designers and manufacturers.

This little book gives the basics of adding beading to clothing. There are less than twenty pages but the informaion is well worth it. The illustrations are clear and easy to follow. It will get you started in the right direction. Once you decide beading is your passion, there are many more elaborate books to seek out.

Customer Reviews:
Small book, but chock full of great ideas........2007-02-06
This book has many great ideas for each room of the home and includes large, clear, color photos showing those ideas at work. Rooms that are often overlooked in organizing books, such as craft rooms, nursery, and even the garage, are given attention here.
Some of the items for small spaces that the authors recommend are easily purchased, such as the multi-purpose storage cubes that are shown in different configurations for widely-varying uses in several different rooms. The book's resources section tells you exactly where to purchase these items. Some items, such as the futon that doubles as a guest bed for a dorm room, come with instructions for making it yourself (not as difficult as you'd think...even a beginner could do it).
This book looks at using oft-missed nooks and crannies in small apartments and houses, but also looks at how to make the most of multi-purpose rooms and single-room living, such as dorm rooms and studio apartments.
While this book is only 96 pages, it comtains more USABLE information than most books on this subject. The ideas are down-to-earth, practical, and affordable. The rooms these ideas are shown working in--although absolutely beautiful--look like places people actually live in with all of their "stuff" rather than fancy show rooms that contain nothing but furniture and decorative items.

Part of a series of small but excellent showcase books, Web Site Graphics: Navigation features Web sites that excel at moving users through their pages. These sites show alternatives to the now commonplace left-side vertical navigation bar. They include eye-catching horizontal bars, arrays of rollovers, color-coded systems, drop-down menus, scrolling Shockwave bars, simple yet elegant text navigators, and many other methods.
Among the standouts is Kjetil Vatne Graphics + Design, with its vibrantly colored pages and circular site tree. The site has changed since the book was researched (it is now called KVAD V5 [www.kvad.com]) and is even more impressive in its navigational design. Also impressive is the "anti-navigational" site Funny Garbage (www.funnygarbage.com), where random clicking is the foundation of navigational strategy. Frogdesign (www.frogdesign.com) displays a scrolling timeline of the company's history across the bottom of each page. The viewer uses a small slider to control forward and backward motion and a popup menu for a site map.
There are a lot of good ideas in Navigation; the authors have chosen carefully, and they explain which aspects caused each site to be chosen. "Navigation is not just a set of links: it is a way of thinking about and structuring a site so that information, illustrations, or documents always feel like they are within reach, not buried far away or impossible to find."
This is not a how-to book. Rather, it's more like a gallery of Web sites that are so well-designed as to make you sit down and take notice. --Angelynn Grant
Topics covered: screen captures of many Web sites showing innovative uses of navigational techniques in Web design, with captions explaining why each site was chosen and listing artistic credits; an index with the names and addresses of all design firms involved.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty pictures, absolutely no substance.......2000-02-12
If you're looking for design inspiration and you don't care one bit about usability, this may just be the book for you -- it's a glossy collection of various web sites that don't use "traditional navigation" schemes. Each glossy picture comes with a 2-3 sentence description of why the authors' included it.
There is absolutely no statistical, or even anecdotal information as to the success of these designs -- success being determined by sales, leads generation, customer satisfaction, etc. The authors *like* the designs and consider them examples of "thinking outside the box".
This is a book about being cool, not a book about effective design -- making it useless to professional designers who are held accountable for the profitability of the web site, not just how it looks.
Excellent choice of featured sites........1999-12-15
I've looked at many books that just print screen shots of "the best web sites", and IMHO this is the only one worth buying. This is because a) it is really good value for money, and b) a really good editing job has been done so that only some real class web sites are included. Just flipping through the pages you come across so many ideas - Great for website designers. And, I find the very short comments are usually pretty insightful, and draw your attention to the most salient points.
The previous reviewer mentioned that it contains no content about navigation. Well of course not. The title of the book is NOT "Website Navigation", it is "Website Graphics: Navigation" and it is part of a series, the others being "Website Graphics: Typography" and "Website Graphics: Color". But anyway I disagree with the reviewer. You can learn a lot about alternative ways of navigating through websites using this book. Instead of a vertical menu down the left hand side, why not use dials or a street map metaphor. Also there are multiple ways of indicating which page/section the user is in, some of them very creative.
Well done to the editors, you have chosen very good sites. I am currently recommending that my institute's library gets the whole set of three.
The title is wrong........1999-08-16
In contrast to what the title says, this book is not really about navigation. Go websurfing for a few days, looking for nice "designer" sites, and print the images on nice glossy paper together with a paragraph of meaningless commentary only stating the obvious. Then you have book like this. It does look nice though. If you're looking for some inspiration in graphics design then it's a nice book which doesn't cost very much. But it doesn't even touch the basic principles of website navigation. No usefull info in here.

Book Description
One of the few women Impressionists, Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) had a life of paradoxes: American born, she lived and worked in France; a classically trained artist, she preferred the company of radicals; never married, she painted exquisite and beloved portraits of mothers and children. This book provides new insight into the personal life and artistic endeavors of this extraordinary woman.
Customer Reviews:
The Essential Cassatt Resource.......2006-07-22
Despite Mary Cassatt's continuing resurgence in popularity as an artist since the 1970s, prior to this volume her biographers had missed the boat. As a result, most people who admire Ms. Cassatt's wonderful paintings are filled with inaccurate beliefs about her life and the condition of women artists during her life. If you care enough about her work to want to correct those mistaken beliefs, please do read this volume. You'll also learn even more if you follow that reading by also looking at Cassatt: A Retrospective by the same author, Nancy Mowll Mathews.
Mary Cassatt is an elusive subject for several reasons. She didn't write many letters, often didn't care what others thought of her and wasn't written about by others nearly as often as she deserved. In addition, her role as an iconic woman pioneer in the Impressionist movement has caused many to "interpret" her life to explain other agendas.
The reality is much more interesting than the misinformation. At a young age, she was exposed to the leading cultural events in Europe . . . a rarity for any American. Her mother was probably one of the most intelligent and capable women of her generation anywhere. The family moved around constantly in rented homes to stay close to the various children and business opportunities. Only after her father's death was Ms. Cassatt able to purchase and enjoy a home. Contrary to popular belief today, it wasn't at all unusual for women to pursue painting careers. In fact, the Louvre was full of American women painting copies of the masterpieces there. What was unusual was for a woman to be viewed as the peer of the best male artists. Ms. Cassatt clearly reached that pinnacle during her Impressionist years and beyond. Much to her own disgust, she let herself be led into painting the mother and child paintings that we all love so much by the marketing plans of her gallery . . . rather than her own passion. Although profitable, this path was in her view a diversion from her better work. Paradoxically, Ms. Cassatt's two bothers were even more famous in their day than she was . . . even though we have barely heard of them today. Her older brother was, in fact, one of the most important railroad developers in the eastern United States. As head of the Pennsylvania Railroad, he directed the development of the railroad tunnel into Manhattan.
Ms. Mathews does a nice job of balancing what is known from what is not . . . while pointing out what the possibilities were. As a result of this biography, I felt I knew the real Mary Cassatt for the first time.
Bravo, Ms. Mathews!
Thorough, well researched study of the artist Mary Cassatt........2002-03-27
Ms. Mathews presents Mary Cassatt's entire life and incorporates little known details about her travels and associations with friends and family. She mixes facts, anecdotes and reflections on society in such an easily readable way that even her suppositions could be viewed as gospel truth. The (hardcover) book is well illustrated with historical photographs and black and white illustrations of Cassatt's and her contemporaries' work. The author makes numerous points regarding what motivated and inspired the artist at different periods in her life. She gives very specific illustrations of how difficult life could be for a woman of Cassatt's time. Additionally, the author admits Mary Cassatt's opinions and outspokenness often got her in trouble with friends. Those friendships she was able to maintain were based on a mutual, professional respect. Included is a chapter about the artist's work in an historical context. Her work was viewed differently by critics, and herself, at different times. Nancy Mowell Mathews book gives so much life to the artist's character, I wouldn't be surprised if it's made into a movie! It is certainly motivation for any working woman.
Getting to Know Mary in All Her Intricacies.......2001-06-25
Nancy Mathews gets to the point... her book is wonderfully researched and weaves through the intricately woven fabric of Cassatt's life; yet she doesn't bog you down with too many details. I enjoyed every page of this book and felt like I got an honest portrayal of the woman, her art and the reasons behind the decisions she made. I especially thank Nancy for her sympathetic yet analytical overview of the many misunderstandings that have been perpetuated year after year about Cassatt and other women artists in the late 19th/early 20th century. I'm glad to know the truth.
This biography left me in awe of Mary Cassatt who was obviously a focused, smart and privileged person at a time when many male artists were barely making ends meet. She was unafraid of the establishment, outspoken and determined, not to mention a smart businesswoman. The only thing I disagree with is when the author states that at 51 Mary Cassatt "was faced with an unusually hard burden of loneliness." Mary Cassatt was blessed with many friends, family and admirers and moved in a great many social circles all her life. She rarely veered from her chosen path. But the greatest lesson we can learn from Ms. Cassatt is to stay focused on our life purpose and to honour our own lives with the best we can give of ourselves.
A MUST READ for all interested in art during the late 1800.......2000-06-13
I highly recommend as a MUST READ this book Mary Cassatt: A Life. by Nancy Mowll Mathews. The book is a fascinating not only of the life of Mary Cassatt but for the insights on the art circles, family life and historical context of these artists and the times in which they lived. Mary Cassatt was a mover and shaker of her times, with good social skills and a mind for business. You travel with her life and times as if you were present. From my perspective I am so happy that I happened on this book because it puts alot of bits and pieces together on these artists.

Product Description
Mary Cassatt always wanted to be an artist. But to reach her goal, she had to overcome many barriers. At the time Mary lived, people frowned on girls from wealthy families having a career. Her parents did not want her living the "odd" life they thought artists lived. Few art schools even accepted girls and women as students. And the "art world" held one idea of what paintings should be but Mary had a different idea. After much travel, study, and hard work, she won over her parents and the critics. Today Mary Cassatt's "impressionist" paintings hang in the best museums and collections throughout the world. She helped change attitudes that for so long kept women from their dreams. She even played a part in winning for women the right to vote. This book is written for 8 and up readers. There are over 20 color pictures of her paintings for you to enjoy.
