If you want to escape your ordinary life for a few hours, Miss Read's books are the ones to escape into. The characters are unusual and have charm. Reading one of Miss Read's book is like sitting in an overstuffed chair by the fireplace with a hot cup of cocoa. Highly recommended!!!

A return visit to Thrush Green and the return of two of our favorite retired school teachers. The usual unusual characters abound and help enliven a lovely, gentle story about small village life. I love Miss Read.
Delightful story about everyday life in an English village........1998-12-15
In this continuing story of Thrush Green we follow the day to day life of the old friends we have met before in Miss Read's books. After the retirement of Agnes Fogerty and Dorothy Watson the new headmaster Alan Lester and his family move into the school house. But in small villages it's hard to keep secrets and it is soon apparent that Mrs. Lester has a drinking problem. Nellie Piggot is now a partner at the Fushia Bush and must face the responsibility of dealing with the strange ways of Bertha Lovelock as she approches her 80th birthday. Percy Hodge is the subject of much speculation about his love life. This book is a wonderful escape of the stress of modern life as we enjoy old friends Charles and Dimity Henstock, Harold and Isabel Shoosmith, Dotty Harmer and many others in Thrush Green.

Sorry to see it end........2005-02-05
Over the last few weeks I have really enjoyed the Mighty Quinns saga. Starting with Conor, finding out about their unknown sister & what happened to their mother & right through to Sean's story. I am sorry to see it end.
Sean is twin to Brian. He's very reserved whereas Brian is the complete opposite. But the 2 share a bond that they don't with their other brothers.
Sean took it hardest when their mother left them as children. When she came back into their lives Sean was unable to forgive her. In this one we find out why.
Sean is working on a case when he meets Laurel Rand. He has to tell her, her fiancee has been arrested for bigamy. Instead of falling to pieces Laurel decides to marry Sean. She has her reasons for needing to marry. With Sean's feelings on marriage it is a surprise that he agree's to marry Lauren.
This is a fantastic series of books on the Quinns & im just sorry they had to end.

Proves that Kirby and Ditko did it all for Marvel........2005-08-06
It has long been rumored that Jack Kirby actually wrote all those classic Fantastic Four comics and Steve Ditko wrote all the classic Spider-Man stories, then Stan Lee put his name on them. Jack Kirby explictly said so on many occasions. Well, this book pretty much proves it, because we see Stan's actual writing ability.
To put it simply, he can't write at all.
These stories are unimaginative hack-jobs that are infinitely inferior to the regular DC versions of the characters in every way, and shows none of the writing ability that made Marvel great in the day.
I guess Jack Kirby told the truth about Stan not really doing the writing, didn't he?

I'm not much of a DC fan and I am a big fan of Marvel, so I thought that this would be interesting, getting to see Stan Lee "create" the classic DC characters. And it was interesting if not great. I think he did a great job with Batman, though he's the one DC character that needs no tweaking. The Wonder Woman story was pretty interesting, though not something I'd want to see a whole lot of (though certainly better than her original version). His Superman was weak. There isn't a whole lot you can do to change Superman, so Stan Lee was sort of doomed from the start. His Green Lantern was basically Silver Surfer. Beside what can you do with Green Lantern. It was all very interesting though.
I need negative stars.......2002-10-03
This is the second graphic novel I've needed negative stars to adequately express my feelings for in the last two months. I really was taken aback by Stan Lee's writing. "He created my favorite comic superhero, Spider-man, how bad could this be?" was my thought when I bought this. The story lines are really bad. I guess the best way to describe it would be to compare the stories to the mostly bad 70's comics. This isn't something that I'll ever reread due to the poorly written stories which is a shame since I respect most of Stan Lee's work. My true review of this would be about negative 2 stars. I hated it but I didn't throw it away which I was very tempted to do with Frank Miller's DK2 travesty.
Stan Lee and DC Comics do not mix...........2002-08-20
This was a really awful book. Needless to say that the creative ideas of Stan Lee and the world of DC Comics do not mix. The character designs were weakly conceived as well as badly drawn and written. They emerge as little else then wasting space on the page, Aside from it being a publicity story, It served little purpose, I do not see what Stan could have done different with these characters, when they are all big joke ideas that come from a big joke company that is Time Warner.

A critical eye looks at the old world yoga. Great story! Great view into this world that few understand. This is one of my favorite books of all time.

There are Yogis and there are Jnanis.
Yogis, are able to detach themselves from the world at will
and gain control over their mind enough to attempt and acquire union with God, Goodness, Soul, Spirit, at will.
The last phrase, 'at will' is the catch.
Yogis still have their ego (will) in tact.
Their accomplishments may feed and enlarge this ego rather
than help them see its illusoriness and get rid of its hold.
I had the impression that Yogis are ultimately evolved souls, but this book clearly showed that there are Yogis of different
levels of enlightment. A Yogi can gain enormous powers of concentration and become a master of subjects he chooses- even human subjects. He or she may seem and talk and act like an enlightened master (eg Osho), but the veil of Unreality ultimately will catch him or her.
The difficulty with the Yogic path is, and most likely thing to happen, is that one could 'slip' and settle for being a guru or a miracle-worker and thus become bound deeper into a happy, all powerful sense of ego.
Paul Brunton gives many many examples of such people and stays clear of them. As you read the story of his experiences, you
unconsciously internalize the intellectual honesty and quest for
Truth.
He then meets a few Jnanis - more than one is in here. His meetings with Sage of Kanchi and the Maharshi are the satisfying
climax of his Quest. But he also meets very many jnanis - at least two more in Madras (read the one with the outhouse meditator) and an astrologer in Kasi.
A Jnani is one who has understood the Reality of how World is put together and what the Mind is and how the only truth is Pure Awareness that permeates everything all the time. This understanding of the truth, not Yogic practices, characterize
the spontaneity of a Jnani.
Even though the original word Yogi means 'one who is united with God', it is currently being applied to practitioners of Yoga and in general, aspirants, which is why the distinction of yogi and Jnani is made here to point out that make sure to look for a Jnani (one who has attained the understanding of reality) and not to settle for other Gurus - who may be aspirants along the path little farther from us.
Even though a saint and a yogi will eventually attain this Wisdom, it is very important to remember that they are on the path and have to be treated cautiously - for their ability to mislead us. Searching for a guru, it has been said, is like a blind person trying to judge whether his helper can see. If he could say that, he does not need a helper.
Reading this book, the detailed and objective style of which is very characteristic of last century British writing, you can
actually re-live a journey in 1900s India or even rural india of today and gain a sense for clarifying your own quest. THAT, is a rare thing, and the most important.
First introduced to this book by a friends father, I have come back to the book once every two to three years over the last 20 years, each time I have felt the book is still relevant and it
re-vitalizes my outlook - sort of a spiritual compass.

A Modern Mystic.......2006-05-05
With Paul Brunton we have a combination of three things, a Journalist who writes exceedingly well, someone who understands western mystical thought and history and an ardent student of eastern mysticism. This combination produces powerful books and 'Search in Secret India' is just one of them. I recommend Paul Brunton's books to anyone who is interested in Mysticism. Just read one of them and you are sure to become a fan.

When Paul Brunton decided to take up a long journey into mystical India in search of its secret spirituality he must have had a genuine urge to study Indian spirituality. The thirst to get a real `Darshan' of a true yogi. He had something more than a journalists' inquiring mind. During his days India was ruled by Gora (white) Sahibs and the Indian treasure in terms of its spirituality, herb medicines, yoga etc. lay hidden from the world. Learn from the master!.......2006-01-16
I recently received this book as a gift and I am very pleased I did. This is such a well-written cookbook, by an author who is clearly passionate about food. The personal, completely unpretentious tone of the author is so refreshing and makes for a very pleasant and easy read. I love how Mr. Valenti shares his personal experiences with food, from his (very tasty) upbringing in an Italian family, to his early years working as an apprentice in high caliber kitchens, to the accomplished chef he has become today. Though he never went to culinary school, Tom Valenti is undoubtedly a master of his craft, and all it takes is a taste of his wonderful dishes to learn that. What I really enjoy about his recipes is so many of them, when broken down, are based on simplicity, (a pinch of sugar here, a touch of vinegar there). Yet the end results are far from simple. They are gastronomic masterpieces! I feel confident that there isn't one recipe in his book that isn't heaven on a plate! My only complaint with this book is the fact that some of his recipes rely on ingredients that are not normally found in common supermarkets and more importantly, are not normal fare for the average home dinner table. Like the handful of recipes centered around rabbit, tripe, quail and guinea hens. I doubt I'll be cooking any rabbit in my future, though I'm sure his preparation of it is brilliant! Having said that, I still think this book is a treasure trove of fabulous recipes that are sure to become family favorites, because above all, Tom's dishes are almost always in the end "comfort food". And he knows how to feed your soul!
Restaurant Dishes with Restaurant Tricks and Tips.......2004-05-12
When Tom Valenti wrote his second book, ?Soups, Stews, and One Pot Meals?, he must have been concentrating on simple dishes to atone for the relatively complicated recipes he put in this, his first book. As always, ?simple? and ?complicated? are loaded words in culinary procedures. What appears complicated to some because it involves cooking several different components of a dish separately may be simple to others because each of the individual steps are simple and the end result leaves the flavors of the ingredients intact, or pleasantly accentuated by the cooking procedure and seasonings.
Valenti?s invitation to HIS kitchen is significant in that he is very fond of a few techniques which are uncommon among is colleagues in other restaurant kitchens. His most interesting twist is in the routine use of sugar as a seasoning along with salt and pepper. He is also exceptionally fond of using acids like citrus and white wine vinegars and bacon, especially smoked and double smoked bacon. It seems odd that a chef with Italian leanings and background is not dedicated to using pancetta; however, he finds it is a bit too salty to his taste. The author also shows an extraordinary respect for other common ingredients such as water. One comment on the author?s use of salt and pasta cooking water is to correct his adjusting the amount of salt to the amount of pasta. The proper technique should be to set the amount of salt by the amount of water. It is the concentration of salt in the water that is important, because that is the physical property that determines how much salt reaches the pasta.
While it is not Valenti?s object in this book to simplify recipes, he does make a special point of showing the cook the places at which it is appropriate to parts of dishes ahead of service. This doubles the value of the book. The primary value of cookbooks by talented professional chefs is to provide recipes with a lot of pizzazz for entertaining. Valenti adds the restaurant tricks which allow the prep chefs to do the kind of advance work which makes the line chef able to put together the dish quickly at the time of service. The author even succeeds in describing how to bring a risotto to an almost complete state, and hold it ?in stasis? until it can be finished for service.
Otherwise, Valenti does not skimp on the details. He provides a larger than average selection of stock and broth recipes, which impress me because they include a mushroom stock. Ever since I tasted the water left from rehydrating dried mushrooms almost forty years ago, I wondered why mushroom broth was not a more important ingredient in cooking.
Valenti?s selection of dishes is an entertaining mix of old standards such as Panzanella salad and a Cuban sandwich with inventive original (or at least unusual) dishes. There are also some dishes that give a very useful twist on favorite combinations. Broccoli Rabe and sausage is a classic Italian combination (See Lydia Bastianich?s Italian cookbook). Valenti adds variety to the dish by adding orecchiette, making it a full veg / starch / protein dish. He also adds interest by incorporating a recipe for homemade sausage to make the dish even more interesting. I may be inclined to find his method for creating loose sausage meat just a bit too simple, but as the author points out, the homemade sausage will make a huge impression on your guests. Speaking of sandwiches, this is one of the very few cookbooks which presents a good selection of recipes for sandwiches. And, these are not your typical deli style fare. Some recipes such as the classic Poorboy are fairly simple, but others are pretty involved. Most recipes use both fish and vegetables in unusual ways as in the grilled vegetable sandwich and the saut?ed spinach sandwich.
Aside from the chapter on sandwiches, the chapters are typical of almost every other Italian-centered cookbook, with chapters on Salads; Soups; Pasta and Risotto; Fish and Shellfish; Poultry and Game; Meats; Accompaniments; Vinaigrettes and Mayonnaises; and Desserts. The fish chapter is one of the largest, since fish and fishing is one of his passions. Valenti is true to his word at the beginning of the book as bacon appears in many recipes, even many fish recipes. Most of the desserts are fruit based and typical of an Italian sensibility.
One of the more distinctive characteristics of this book is the clarity in which the author presents recipes that may be just a bit on the complicated side for inexperienced cooks. Every recipe has an informative headnote that may explain the origin of the recipe or something of its attraction. All ingredients are neatly presented in a nicely shaded box with clear prep directions. The main attraction is the fact that the procedure is broken down into simple sentences, each beginning with the most important operative word in the technique. It is crystal clear that each step is to Warm or Add or Transfer or Lay or Repeat or Remove or do something Carefully of Gently. Valenti has done exactly what I do when I transcribe recipes by breaking everything down into simple steps.
Most dishes, especially main course dishes, are accompanied by a no nonsense wine recommendation.
Highly recommended for dedicated amateurs. The author does not compromise on technique. Valenti makes it as easy as possible for you to follow his lead to spectacular dishes.
Real Secrets.......2002-03-19
In this cookbook, the author seems willing to actually part with secrets he has learned and acquired from his professional training and experiences as a chef. Rather than present yet another collection of recipes that readers can imitate, Valenti seems interested in promoting in the home cook useful cooking skills and ways of adapting to what food is on hand, what time is available, and what interest one has in creative cooking. The introductory sections are informative and different from most other books', and while the main part of the volume is a selection of recipes, the emphasis is on adaptions and flavor. The dishes are often unique and the book reads well. The author's love of cooking shines through on every page, and he is no snob-- he bears in mind the constraints of time and equipment that the average experienced cook faces.

In 1931, at age 24, Norton Simon invested $7,000 in a bankrupt juice bottling plant. This investment grew into Hunt Foods, which soon ruled California's canned tomatoes empire. With a rare ability to transform laggard companies into highly profitable enterprises, Simon went on to amass a huge fortune. Then, in his late forties, he turned to art collecting and built one of the greatest private collections since World War II. Suzanne Muchnic has written an intimate and very readable biography of Norton Simon and at the same time provides a thoughtful overview of Los Angeles culture in the postwar years.
The tycoon-turned-art-collector was accused of knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing, but he pursued art with passion. A shrewd negotiator, obsessed by power, Simon astonished the art world with acquisitions ranging from Old Masters to Impressionists to rare Indian and Asian artworks. Searching for an appropriate home for his 12,000-strong collection, Simon courted (and disappointed) numerous California museums before eventually taking over the floundering Pasadena Art Museum, now the Norton Simon Museum.
Simon's influence extended beyond the business and art world: as a University of California regent he challenged funding cutbacks, sympathized with student activists, and opposed the firing of Angela Davis. His personal life was equally tumultuous and included a difficult divorce, his 31-year-old son's suicide, a whirlwind courtship and marriage to actress Jennifer Jones, and a run for the U.S. Senate.
Simon died in 1993, and during his last ten years Suzanne Muchnic was the only person to whom he granted an interview. Odd Man In reveals a man very much of his time--brilliant, anxious, powerful, and caught up in the rapid change and cultural ambiguity of Southern California in the second half of the century.

Norton Simon was what so many rich men want to be, but can't for lack of the kind of zeal and willingness to jump into areas which require leaving everything you know behind and immersing yourself full-fold into that world.
For those Southern Californians familiar with The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, this will be an especially interesting read. If you have a dreamy idea of what art collecting should be, this book will shatter your delusions.To excell at anything takes a willingness to accept high risks, discipline, and the guiding passion to ensure one's vision is carried forth. Thus, it was with Norton Simon, who managed to build an empire that later would become Hunt Foods, and amass a collection of art that ranges from Southeast Asian antiquities to the well known impressionists Degas, Manet, and Gaugin. Norton Simon not only led the way in integrating businesses but perhaps his finest legacy left behind was one of the most generous and comprehensive collections of art in the world.
Norton Simon had wanted to install his collection in Fullerton, CA, where he had made his fortune with Hunt Foods. One can only bemoan the shortsightedness of the town leaders, who mired his intentions in a bureaucratic nightmare, resulting in his taking the entire collection to Pasadena. Lessson learned: Don't mess with a titan when he offers you a Modigliani.
This is the only book you'll ever find on Norton Simon. For a public figure, a maverick and an outspoken leader, he was fiercely private.

collection of the old masters, the impressionists and Asian arts.
These collection is only based on the founder, a self-made millionaire Norton Simon's taste.
This book describes how he earned money and spent to the collection. Although he believed only his way of doing things and made a friction everywhere he goes, his talent, money and passion made possible to build the museum titled his name. Many episodes make this book readable and interesting even a reader who isn't interested in Southern California or Art collector.

This exhibition catalogue is the most comprehensive collection of his work and includes an essay by organizing curator Carol S. Eliel and an homage to Mullican as a teacher and mentor by fellow Los Angeles painter Lari Pittman. Like another Lee (Bontecou) whose quiet career of working and teaching recently got a deserving retrospective, Mullican will emerge here as an American original.

Thought this book was an easy read and enhanced my visiting the actual Mullican exhibit at Los Angeles Museum of Art. I would recommend it.

this book is great.You know My auntie just sent me this book and just handled it.You know i can't buy books about backstreetboys,(but maybe i do,but it's hard for me to find one because i'm from the philippines) but luckily i've had a nice auntie in the U.S. who've sent me this book.But you know i'm really worried 'coz my auntie sent it through mail,so i'm afraid it won't come because some BAD people(philippines) just get it if they found it beutiful for them,so i kept on praying and hoping that the book will be sent to me,and luckily i did. this book is the best book on the Backstreet Boys that i have ever read. there is a bio on each of the guys, LOTS of hott pics-including younger pics and shirtless pics- and behind the scenes stuff. there are also stories of the pranks that they play on each other and of accidents and funny stuff that happened onstage. every BSB fan should have this book. it is worth every cent and worth getting! i love Brian soo much, he is soo hott and soo sweet! keep the Backstreet pride alive ya'll!
