decent ideas, bad writing.......2007-07-07
My history teacher in high school had a word she wrote in red ink on my essays when she knew I wasn't writing to the best of my ability: trite!
The author needs a "trite" in red ink on every page. Maybe it was testament to McIntosh's storyline that I finished the book (as well as book 1--although I won't be continuing on to book 3). The premise (a murder victim cursed to possess the body of his killer) is interesting. Ultimately, the trite (I'll use it again) writing style completely hampers any development of this idea whatsoever. I could say that this should be filed under Young Adult, but young adults are going to English class every day and would also be writing in red ink in the margins. It was a sad (but easy) decision to abandon the characters in this series and forego reading the third book. If book 3 is anything like the first two, I'm sure I won't be missing much character development.
Epic Style Adventure.......2007-04-16
This is a true Trilogy, while things will get wrapped up, the package isn't always neat. Some very harsh things happen to the main character. So I disagree with one reviewer who thought it was a light read. I liked the fact that I couldn't predict how the author was going to resolve things.
Facinating Tale Continues.......2006-09-14
The magic of Myrren's Gift has saved Wyl Thirsk's life again, although not his body... He finds himself now in the body of the female assasin who has killed the last body he inhabited, that of Romen Koreldy. Wyl still needs to try and protect his sister from the evil king Celimus. He also needs to find a way to protect his love, the Queen of Briavel, from having to marry Celimus. Plus find a way to rescue his friends from the northern kingdom. ... And he needs to find out what is behind Myrren's strange gift to him by finding her mysterious father.
Surrounded by an assortment of interesting characters, Wyl proceeds in his various quests--ultimately to save the kingdom he loves from destruction.
Several questions are answered, but many more remain, and I eagerly look forward to reading the next book.
Easy, quick, read not requiring much thought.......2006-08-18
Blood and Memory is a quick, uncomplicated read. Although it is predicable and the characters are often derivative, there are some cute/interesting parts, and it is well written. I got my copy used and was happy with it compared to what I paid for it. I'm not sure it is worth $7.99 and the trade price is to high.
Promise of book 1 dies horrible agonizing death........2006-06-24
The first book in this trilogy started well with interesting charecters, new ideas for motivating the protagonist, and at least a semi-original plot tool. Every ounce of potential is ruined by this second book. Both the hero and villain become as one dimensional as the paper they are printed on. All characters in the book become both blindingly intuitive and amazingly dense depending on what the author needed for an outcome in a given scene. Someone who can spot a certain trap from miles off in one scene mindlessly falls victim to a second trap in another. The unique plot tool is used once to achieve something that could have been profound or at least interesting but the way the scene is contrived to use it is so ludicrous that it spoils the effect. One can hope that her next book will avoid these pitfalls but this one is doomed to garage sales and remainder piles.

This starts off slowly and gets funnier and funnier, as you realise what is going on. You appreciate it more and more as you go on.
The main aliens, The Dwellers, while having ridiculous levels of technology and knowledge, and being billions of years old, sometimes seem like they have stepped straight out of a Red Dwarf/Hitchhiker's crossover.
So there is some of that Culture-AI humor here, and AIs - and a super-insane religious/political/military leader, to top all that off.
Solid Banks, but a little dull.......2007-09-04
While there are some nicely crafted imaginative structures on a grand scale in this book, in true Ian Banks style, it's not at all as rewarding on that front as the Culture books, or Look to Windward. The plot starts out slowly, but accelerates after the middle. The twist at the end is neat, but a little predictable.
If you like Banks, please read this. If you haven't yet read him, you could start out with something better. Consider Phlebas, or Look to Windward, or even The Bridge would serve as better introductions.

Far from formulaic.......2007-06-17
The Algebraist isn't an easy book to summarize. It isn't even an easy book to read, though science fiction lovers will find it worth the time and effort. It is arguably great, but it is also undeniably big, set against a background so enormous in both size and history and sheer alien-ness that it makes Dune look like a one-act play.
It's 4034 AD, and with barely two millennia of space-faring behind it, humanity is a relative newcomer to the baroque galactic meta-civilization. The culture of the Dwellers, who inhabit 99% of the gas giants in the galaxy, is billions of years old. Fassin Taak, the novel's protagonist, is unexpectedly seconded to the position of Complector, in charge of millions of planets and trillions of beings.
Not surprisingly, much of the first half of The Algebraist is devoted to introducing the large cast, an eclectic range of subplots, and the political, cultural and scientific background to the war that is brewing between the Dwellers and the Mercatoria, the latest galactic hegemony. The driving force behind the war is the Archimandrite Luseferous, cynically apostate priest of the Starveling Cult, effective ruler of one hundred and seventeen stellar systems, and a diamond-toothed psychopathic sadist with a fertile imagination. His fleet makes a pre-emptive strike on the Dweller-inhabited gas giant Nasqueron, ostensibly to make the galaxy safer from terrorists, but really because his intelligence people suspect there is something of value there.
Taak, who lives on a moon orbiting Nasqueron, is ordered to travel into the planet's turbulent atmosphere and make contact with the Dwellers, who may or may not have a Planetary Protector (Deniable), but have yet to develop a decent hangover cure. They certainly have ten billion years of brief minor wars and an algorithm for determining the elegance of a particular battle, which they use as their equivalent of a Supreme Court. They are also rumoured to possess - or to have forgotten - the secret mathematical formula for faster-than-light travel without the use of the known wormholes.
Taak goes looking for the legendary algebraic formula, and learns that the universe is not only stranger than he imagined, but much more dangerous. He admits at one point to suffering from `swim' - "when your head kind of seems to swim because you suddenly think, "Hey, I'm a human being but I'm twenty thousand light years from home and we're all living in the midst of mad aliens and super-weapons and the whole bizarre insane swirl of galactic history and politics!" - and readers may have the same problem. Banks has been industriously and almost insanely inventive when it comes to alien cultures and galactic history, and some of this is reflected in the book's language. As befits the book's sheer scope, he occasionally uses sentences of Kafkaesque length and complexity. At the other extreme, he can lapse into the vowel-less text of SMS-style messaging for whole pages. His narrators, by their own admission, also tend to digress unless forcibly stopped. There is, however, much less technobabble in The Algebraist than in many hard sf novels. Despite the title, you won't need to remember your high school algebra to read it, nor very much science.
While the first half of The Algebraist moves rather slowly, it explodes into full space operatic mode by about page 300, and after that I found it difficult to put down. It's a refreshingly long way from John W. Campbell's dictum that humans should always be shown as masters of the universe - it's much more in the tradition of Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker, with just a hint of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This is wonderful, mind-expanding far-future big-picture science fiction: space opera at its baroque best.
wheels within wheels..........2007-05-10
On a recent trip I picked up a copy of The Algebraist and I must admit to developing a sneaking appreciation of Mr. Banks. I'd previously tried one of his books that made me reticent... but The Algebraist won me over.
The positive side of Banks's work is his fondness, nay, monomania for scenery (and the devouring of the same). Here we get gothic crashed space vessels, Raj-like imperial capitols, a community of aliens living in the clouds of a Jupiter-sized planet, space battles of the Olde School. Enough that some are calling this "space opera". This is his strong suit: in my other experience with Banks ("Condiser Phlebas") he blows up an entire "ringworld", just because he can! No one really does big scenery like Banks.
We also get a plot that seems simplistic on the surface while allowing the time and space (600 pages) to find deeper things going on---without the overhead bludgeoning we often get. The end is as fascinating for what it does and doesn't say.
Sounds nifty, eh? The downsides here are that Banks is too fascinated with his plaything and too fond of whimsy by half. The Dweller aliens are all comic relief--pantomime horses really. We are told, rather than see, the aeons old subtleness that animates them and the humor defeats their developing any real gravitas.
Still, that's not entirely fair. Banks gives us an epic, well told, with things you've genuinely Never Seen Before---something we rarely get in this age of cookie-cutter trilogies. Highly recommended.

Although I'm only a little more than halfway through Iain M. Banks latest ( I'm going intentionally slow enjoying every sentence ), it's clear " The Algebraist " is as exciting and well wrought as any of his earlier SF.
Highly recommended.

Required Reading for every President.......2002-06-28
This should be on the coffee table, magazine rack, bookshelf, and waiting room of every serious national leader. Conscientious voters should also read this in order to understand what it takes to make political peace in the world. But Stassen is not merely political, he's actually biblical first of all. He exegetes like a biblical scholar while making applications which only a leading Christian ethicist like he could. Just peacemaking shows that "just war theory" can lead to peace while restraining war, and that passifism is an extremely ACTIVE practice. EXCELLENT!
Great practicle application of the Sermon of the Mount........1998-04-18
Stasson does an incredible job in his ability to interpret and apply the teaching of Jesus to every day life. While often the sermon on the mount is ignored in Christian teaching and literature because so many people find it hard to understand or live up to, Stasson shows how Jesus teachings don't trap people, but rather set them free to break away from the patterns of sin and pain.

Carlo Middione owns two well-respected restaurants in San Francisco. A Sicilian-American, he emphasizes cooking pasta properly, pairing it attentively with the right amount of the right sauce, and serving it in moderate-size portions. This warmly illustrated, well-sized paperback updates what Middione originally wrote in 1982. Many of the 65 recipes are Sicilian, including Rigatoni alla Donnafugata and Fettuccine with "Busted" Tomatoes. The brief chapter on fried pasta is a treasure. Middione suggests includes wines to accompany most dishes.

Simple and delicious Italian cooking.......2000-01-21
After dining at one of Mr. Middione's restaurants while on vacation in San Francisco, I had to try to replicate his excellent cuisine at home. The recipes in this cookbook are easy to prepare, simple, and always delicious. There are very good descriptions of different types of cheeses, pastas, and other ingredients used. If you enjoy cooking and Italian food, this cookbook is a must have.
The recipes and wrting style appeal to my roots........1999-04-29
Mr. Middione has a writing style and enthusiasm for Italian food and history which definitely appeal to my Italian-American roots. I bought this book while on vacation one summer and read it instead of the novel that I had planned on reading at my leisure. Then, of course, I was compelled to go into the kitchen and cook. I tried many of his remarkably simple recipes, finding many that reminded me of my own grandmother's dishes from my childhood. His love for the cuisine of Italy is apparent in every sentence. You can almost smell the basil in every page! A real keeper as well as being a wonderful value. Every recipe is worth trying.

This is a great book for identifying dolls. Features a large variety of rare versions of modern dolls (i.e. Chatty Cathy) as well as a price guide for what you might expect to get one of these rare finds for. Tons of pictures and full explainations.

If you are striving for excellence and becoming a master, this is the book for you. Recipes for making your own gesso, plasters, etc. are included along with good step by step photos.
This McCloud's no Highlander.......2001-01-30
This book was a pretty big disappointment. While McCloud does offer a strong presentation of color theory, he does not use realistic examples or materials in a way that someone could take advantage of his color knowledge. As an art historian he seems facinated with the techniques and materials that were used centuries ago. And while McCloud may have plenty of time to travel to France to purchase beautiful, pure, oxidized pigments and then mix them with homemade rabbit glue and curdled-milk concoctions to paint his wall, I for one and happy to have to folks at Lowes mix and shake for me. After all, most of us are just weekenders in this home improvement thing. All said and done, there's not much material about applying "regular" paint to a wall in such a way as to create interesting results. Great pictures, solid color theory (although color theory's been pretty well established for hundreds of years now), lots of info on how to mix paint like they did long ago -- not worth it.

Great Manual!.......2007-10-05
I actually found this in the bargain books section at Borders about a year ago for $2.99! It's fantastic! The beginning explains not only tools you'll need, but tools of the trade in general. It has photographs of every tool, and explains the uses. After every topic, there is a chart which sums up the uses, and how to's. For example, it has a chart on pretty much every surface you might consider painting, and explains the best ways to clean, and prep them. The recipes for the paint colors are clear, and the instructions to acheive the finished looks are also clear. As with any book, it is important to read it, not just look at the pictures, and as with any instruction manual, it is important to take a chance and actually try the project yourself. Overall, even if I had paid $20.00 or more, I would've been happy with this book. It's great for a personal project library.

Wyland Paint Kit.......2007-01-10
My 8 year old granddaughter did very well with the drawing part. She still does not seem to be interested in the painting yet. I think 8 years old is a little young for most for this type of kit. They are still in the watercolor stage, which for them is easier.
Great for Kids.......2003-05-25
Although I am 25 years old, I bought this book because I love Wyland's work and was curious about how he drew his sea creatures. It came with brushes, some acrylic paints, drawing paper, pencils, and a book giving instruction on how to draw and paint (all in a hard cover folder). It is definetly worth the price and would be a great start up book for kids interested in sea art.

Compared to other books on this subject, which are sometimes overly complex, this is great encouragement to the amateur decorator. Each type of paint treatment is covered step-by-step, with photographs.
There are numerous full-color photographs on every page, which help the reader visualize how each technique might apply to their decorating needs.
The only drawback is that most of the photographs are of professionally painted walls, not amateur results. Nonetheless, this book is very helpful to those interested in dressing up their boring walls.

I have been fascinated by this book the first time I opened it in a local bookshop. This is a photography showcase containing a selection of surreal, grotesque and weird subjects from worldwide artists, including the stunning Floria Sigismondi. You will be frightened, delighted, disgusted by the strange monsters, the weird people, the surreal atmosphere living in this book. I recommend this to modern photography lovers, anyway I will suggest you to take a look inside the book somewhere, to decide if this is your kind of art or not.

The book let me down in a lot of ways. I guess it just wasn't what I had expected. I was hoping for an inside account of how Metallica wrote the lyrics and created the music in a collaborative effort inside their studios (which is the opposite of how they created their prior albums). Instead I got a book that was 50% of the author patting himself on the back of his previous projects and how Blair Witch 2 was a bomb. Honestly, I don't care. I wanted to hear stories about Metallica, not get a run down of your resume.

I enjoyed the book where it was talking about Metallica but I have to agree with other folks comments about the writers going on and on about their past documentaries as if by telling us we might run right out and buy their other movies. To be honest I skipped everything they wrote about past exploits and only read about the band once I saw how they kept patting themselves on the back. I'm a fan of the band not of your past doc's. Anyway as said by others it does give a little more insight to the movie when you watch it. 3 stars for the whole book for the back patting session that is endured.

I loved the Metallica documentary "Some Kind of Monster", and after I read the book, I loved the film even more. The book to me fills in all the right gaps that the film couldn't present - for sake of time only. I love to know how things work and operate, so I loved reading how filmmakers decide on a piece of work, how it's filmed, and then how the footage gets made into a masterpiece. What insight. Great book - Highly recommended!

This book, as it says on the cover, is the inside story of the hit film "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster". Q Prime, Metallica's management company, hired a "performance-enhancement coach" by the name of Phil Towle to conduct therapy sessions with the remaining members. The thing I find most annoying about it are the constant references to the past projects of the film maker. I expected a book that was about Metallica and instead got something that is full of self referencial drivel and soul searching from Joe. Perhaps it's my fault and my expectations were set incorrectly, but I found the book to be quite boring overall. Phil Towle, tries to get James & Lars to hug whenever they se

This book was my first book about Metallica, and I must say the history is too brief. Although the pictures are great. It also contains a quite big poster of James Hetfield (vocals, rythm guitarist of Metallica).
Overall it's worth the price, but not the best Metallica-book around...

I bought this book mainly because of the poster inside and that is the only valuable thing there. The pictures are nice, but I was expecting more from the book. Almost no text and information is very basic. When you are new to Metallica it is the right book for you - however, when you were with the band from the beginning and/or you own all the CDs it's just a waste of money.
